Disney Shared The Recipe For Its Kitchen Sink Sundae That's Topped With A Whole Can Of Whipped Cream

Are you up for the challenge?

disney parks blog kitchen sink sundae

The Disney Parks Blog shared a recipe for the Kitchen Sink sundae from the Beaches & Cream Soda Shop at Disney’s Yacht and Beach Club Resorts. This treat is RIDICULOUS and amazing, there are truly no other words to describe it...except maybe one more...MASSIVE. Yeah, if you've never had it, you should know that this ice cream sundae is served in a literal kitchen sink! It's kind of a big deal!

The prep work and ingredients for this dessert will likely take up a big portion of your freezer, fridge, and counters because it boasts a whopping 28 ingredients. If you have a sweet tooth, you likely already have some of these at your disposal like chocolate sauce, chocolate chips, and rainbow sprinkles, but you might have to buy the WHOLE CAN OF WHIPPED CREAM you'll be topping it with. That said, you probably shouldn't rip the kitchen sink off your wall just to make it authentic. Sorry!!!

Since this is one of Disney's most beloved desserts, people made clear in the comments that they were down to give this challenging dessert a try.

"I'm making this! PERIOD!" one person wrote. "Mouth-watering," another said.

This dessert is designed to feed four-to-six people, so gather your (live-in!) family around, whip this up and settle in for a nice, long sugar rush after you've taken the whole thing down. Sounds pretty delicious to me! You can find the full recipe here .

Chick-fil-A Getting A New Spicy Chicken Sandwich

My party of 3 spent $120 at Disney World's Beaches & Cream Soda Shop, and the massive $36 sundae is worth every penny

  • Beaches & Cream Soda Shop is a restaurant and ice-cream parlor inside Disney's Beach Club Resort .
  • My party of three spent about $120 on our meal, but we received a 10% annual-passholder discount
  • The $36 Kitchen Sink is one of the best ice-cream sundaes I've ever had at Disney World.

Beaches & Cream Soda Shop is located in Disney's Beach Club Resort.

kitchen sink yacht beach club

Beaches & Cream Soda Shop is a retro soda fountain and casual table-service dining location at Disney's Beach Club, a deluxe resort in the Epcot area.

Anyone can visit the resort restaurant — even if you're not staying on the property or visiting the theme parks — and it serves lunch and dinner.

I made an advanced reservation to dine here as the restaurant is quite popular and smaller than some of the other spots at Disney World .

After checking in, you can take a look at Stormalong Bay outside.

kitchen sink yacht beach club

I was greeted by a friendly employee who checked my party in for our reservation.

While we waited for our table to be ready, we peeked outside at Stormalong Bay, the Yacht and Beach Club resorts' 3-acre pool area containing a lazy river, a waterslide, and a sand-bottomed pool.

I was in awe of the beautiful artwork hung all around the restaurant.

kitchen sink yacht beach club

When I walked into the restaurant, I was amazed by all of the paintings of Mickey Mouse and the rest of his friends.

It felt as though I was perusing the Art of Disney store, which I loved. I'm a big fan of Disney artwork.

The retro theme of the restaurant was fun and beachy.

kitchen sink yacht beach club

It was like I was transported back in time. I particularly liked the jukebox and thought it added to the vintage aesthetic of the restaurant.

Even the employees' uniforms were themed, which I appreciated.

If you like sandwiches, Beaches & Cream has a plethora of options for you.

kitchen sink yacht beach club

The food menu was extremely limited with mostly sandwiches and sides. But if you like sandwiches , it's the perfect spot for you.

Some of the sandwich offerings include a French dip ($19), cheddar-bacon-ranch chicken ($19), and Reuben ($19).

I started my meal with the chili-and-cheese tots.

kitchen sink yacht beach club

Although the restaurant is largely known for its sweet treats and ice cream, my party wanted to have the full experience, so we started with some savory menu items.

We ordered the chili-and-cheese tots ($9), which were topped with chili, cheese, sour cream, and green onions. I thought they were delicious, and the ratio of toppings to tots was perfect.

There's also a plant-based version of the chili-and-cheese tots ($9), cheese-and-bacon tots ($9), and plain potato tots ($6).

For my entrée, I ordered a grilled cheese.

kitchen sink yacht beach club

My sandwich ($14) was delicious and extremely filling. If you're a cheese lover like I am, this is definitely an excellent option.

The tomato soup served on the side was great for dipping. It complemented the sandwich well.

I thought it was a bit pricey for a grilled-cheese sandwich , but it was really tasty, and I knew it'd only be a once-in-a-while treat.

I also tried a French-dip sandwich for the first time.

kitchen sink yacht beach club

Someone else in my party ordered the French dip, so I was able to try it.

The sandwich had thinly-sliced roast beef , Swiss cheese, and crispy fried onions on a toasted French roll, and it was served with au jus.

This was my first time eating this kind of sandwich, and I was pleasantly surprised by how good the roast beef was. I'm not typically the biggest fan, but it was extremely flavorful.

Of course, we had to save room for the Kitchen Sink sundae for dessert.

kitchen sink yacht beach club

The Kitchen Sink sundae ($36) was the main event of the meal. We ordered the Chocolate Lover's version, which featured chocolate ice cream, cookies-and-cream ice cream, vanilla ice cream, brownies, Milky Way pieces, Oreos, chocolate sauce, sprinkles, chocolate shavings, and chocolate chips.

This was worth the price as it was huge and designed to serve four people. There are also original and Neapolitan versions with different ice-cream flavors and toppings.

I didn't mind spending the money because it was a whole experience. It was really fun having the server announce to the entire restaurant that our table was trying to defeat the Kitchen Sink while the lights in the restaurant flashed.

My party of three couldn't quite finish it, but we made a decent dent.

The Kitchen Sink is definitely one of my favorite ice-cream sundaes on the property.

Beaches & Cream Soda Shop is a must-try the next time you're at Disney World.

kitchen sink yacht beach club

For three adults, with my 10% annual-passholder discount, the bill came out to $118 after tip.

I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at Beaches & Cream, but I'd probably only visit again for the Kitchen Sink sundae or another ice-cream dish. The entrée prices were a little too high for classic diner sandwiches.

If you've never dined here, I think it's worth making a reservation during your next trip to Disney World to try the Kitchen Sink.

Beaches & Cream Review

beaches-cream-disney-jukebox

Beaches & Cream is a budget table service restaurant and ice cream dining spot themed as an old-fashioned soda shop at Walt Disney World’s Beach Club Resort. This review features some food & sundae photos, thoughts on the ambiance, and our take on whether it’s worth a stop here. ( Updated October 3, 2019 .)

We’ve long proclaimed the virtues of Beaches & Cream Soda Shop, and have visited countless times enjoying a range of menu options–both food and ice cream. Before we delve into that, it’s worth noting that Beaches & Cream Soda Shop is now closed until (at least) December 2019 for expansion.

We cover the details in our Beaches & Cream Refurbishment: Temporary Location & Ice Cream Alternatives . In that, we suggest three ice cream options within a 10 minute walk of Yacht & Beach Club that are worth your time over the temporary Beaches & Cream shop. You should stop reading this review and instead check that out if you’re visiting Walt Disney World before early 2020…

Although Beaches & Cream is technically a table service restaurant in that it has a menu with a number of basic entrees, most of which are solid, the real star of the show is the ice cream. This is why the full name is Beaches & Cream Soda Shop. Much like a classic soda shop, it’s the bubbly charm, jukebox, and dessert menu that puts Beaches & Cream on the map.

The dessert menu here is second to none at Walt Disney World, and the restaurant is famous for its behemoth Kitchen Sink dessert, which has garnered mainstream buzz and attention with features on the Travel Channel, among other pop culture sites.

beaches-cream-soda-shop-disney-world-epcot-dessert-133

This review could be pretty short and sweet: go to Beaches & Cream. It’s an excellent restaurant with a fun theme and the reasonably prices by Walt Disney World standards.

There should really be no question as to whether you should eat here, especially if you are not on the Disney Dining Plan (it’s a poor use of credits on the Dining Plan). Note that Beaches & Cream now accepts Advance Dining Reservations and as a result, it can be difficult to eat here now without an ADR.

beaches-cream-soda-shop-disney-world-epcot-dessert-131

In terms of ambiance, Beaches & Cream is a deceptively simple soda shop, styled with pastel tiles, and a vintage look that gives it an old-fashioned charm.

Like all good soda shops, there’s a jukebox with classic tunes that guests can play. The restaurant feels like an old-timey soda shop meets a small beach town meets an ice cream motif. If you could pull a Back to the Future style move and revisit your parents’ (or grandparents, depending upon your age) first date, this is like the place it might’ve been.

beaches-cream-soda-shop-disney-world-epcot-dessert-132

It’s the kind of place where the Father in Carousel of Progress would “meet the boys for a cold sarsaparilla.”

Very Americana. Much ice cream.

Now let’s turn to the food options…

beaches-cream-soda-shop-disney-world-epcot-dessert-134

I recently deviated from my go-to Beaches & Cream entree and ordered the Beaches Seafood Salad Sandwich.

The croissant was fresh and buttery, and the avocado vinaigrette gave the seafood salad a nice flavor, but the seafood was not plentiful. It was fine, but far from memorable, and not something I’d order again.

beaches-cream-soda-shop-disney-world-epcot-dessert-136

For a while, every visit to Beaches & Cream Soda Shop meant ordering their Angus Beef Burger. The nice toasted and buttery bun, fresh-grilled meat was fantastic.

That has changed as of late for 2 reasons. First, the price of the burger has increased steadily, going from about the price of a counter service meal to a few dollars more. Second, we discovered the nearby Crew’s Cup Lounge, which has the best burger at Walt Disney World . A burger that actually costs less than Beaches & Cream’s burger. Now, we do a progressive meal, visiting Crew’s Cup Lounge for food and Beaches & Cream Soda Shop for desserts.

beaches-cream-soda-shop-disney-world-epcot-dessert-138

The Beaches Patty Melt is a different twist on the burger, and definitely a worthwhile option if you want something different.

Still, I think the best choice is just going to Crew’s Cup Lounge. It’s a 5-minute walk from Beaches & Cream.

beaches-cream-burgers-brickers

As we turn to the stars of the menu–the desserts–we’ll start with our story of ordering the Kitchen Sink back when we were young and reckless. This was during the “Weekend of Deliciousness” on our Walt Disney World honeymoon which also included stops at Victoria & Albert’s and California Grill , among other restaurants. (What a time to be alive!)

While planning, I had mentioned the Kitchen Sink to Sarah on several occasions, but I think she thought I was joking, or maybe she hoped I’d forget. Quite the contrary: I deeply ingrained it in my brain and fixated on it to the point that there was no way around getting the Kitchen Sink. Even if I had to eat it alone. I actually planned on only getting that and nothing else. When we ordered it, our very courteous server seemed as if she was trying to dissuade us from the gargantuan dessert, which is not meant for only 2 people.

beaches-cream-kitchen-sink-sarah-tom-bricker

When the sirens went off, I knew our time had come to consume one of the greatest desserts known to man.

Ladle of Chocolate Fudge, Ladle of Butterscotch, Ladle of Peanut butter, 2 Scoops Vanilla Ice Cream, 2 Scoops Chocolate Ice Cream, 2 Scoops Strawberry Ice Cream, 1 Scoop Coffee Ice Cream, 1 Scoop Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream, Pineapple Topping, Strawberry Topping, Entire Banana, Muffin, Entire Can of Whipped Cream, Large Brownie, Angel Food Cake, Entire Milky Way Bar, 4 Oreos, Every single type of sprinkle in the house, Chocolate Syrup, Marshmallow Topping, and topped with a handful of Maraschino Cherries.

Oh yeah baby, we were going home full!

As the evidence in the above video should clearly indicate, I contributed a lot more to our Kitchen Sink consumption effort than did Sarah. Not to diminish what she did, as we both ate a lot–way too much, actually. Although we weren’t given any sort of medallions for conquering the epic dessert, we were champions in our own minds. The crowd (in our heads) cheered as we left the restaurant.

For us, with its odd assortment and hodgepodge nature, the Kitchen Sink is a ‘one and done’ dessert. Well…that was true for us until we learned about the Chocolate Lover’s Kitchen Sink , which we also just had to try to conquer . But now that we’ve done that Kitchen Sink, we swear we’re done. (Probably. Until Disney comes up with another.)

kitchen sink yacht beach club

The Kitchen Sink is cooler in principle than it is in practice; eating it was a really cool experience, but I’ve had better desserts at Beaches & Cream. Nevertheless, it made our list of the Top 101 Tips for Walt Disney World simply for the novelty of the experience.

If you’re a family of 4 or so with small kids, the experience of getting the Kitchen Sink is something you cannot pass up. Your kids will remember the spectacle for years, and even if you don’t eat it all, it will be a great memory that is well worth the price.

beaches-cream-soda-shop-disney-world-epcot-dessert-130

We’ve been several times since, and although we (wisely) haven’t done the Kitchen Sink again, we have tried numerous other desserts on the menu, a few of which rate as my favorite desserts at Walt Disney World.

Options like the floats, cones, and cups are good, but we highly recommend getting one of the larger sundaes instead. (Pro tip: don’t share–even if you think you aren’t hungry enough for a sundae.)

beaches-cream-no-way-jose

Pretty much all of the sundaes–the Milky Way, Fudge Mud Slide, and No Way Jose are incredible.

I think the best of the sundaes is the No Way Jose, which is a giant sundae with chocolate and vanilla ice cream, topped with hot fudge and peanut butter sauces, chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, whipped cream, and a cherry. Unlike the Kitchen Sink, this is in no way a hodgepodge, as all of these flavors work together tremendously well.

beaches-cream-soda-shop-disney-world-epcot-dessert-137

Continuing on the peanut butter hype train, my new go-to dessert at Beaches & Cream is the Grilled Banana Bread with Peanut Butter. This is basically the peanut butter sandwich of the gods, adding caramelized bananas, whipped cream, and ice cream to the mix. While it’s tough to beat the No Way Jose, I’d say this is the more unique dessert, which gives it the slight edge in my book. Plus, it’s super-healthy given the bananas, peanut butter, and whatnot. Bonus!

This currently ranks as my favorite dessert at Walt Disney World. Please excuse any typos in this post…I’m busy daydreaming about eating the Crew’s Cup Lounge burger and truffle fries, this dessert, and then beaching myself on an inner tube in Stormalong Bay. Best day ever.

kitchen-sink-beaches-cream-sarah-bricker

Overall, Beaches and Cream is a quaint (as far as Disney goes) little restaurant located in the Beach Club Resort with fine food, and beyond exceptional desserts. Seriously, this is the best ice cream at Walt Disney World, so even if you don’t go for the food, go for the ice cream. Even if you hate ice cream for some reason (do you also hate freedom and bald eagles?), we are certain this ice cream will make a convert out of you. Beyond that, Beaches & Cream Soda Shop’s charming and laid back atmosphere make it a great spot to go after a tough morning of lounging around Stormalong Bay. You cannot go wrong with Beaches & Cream. Pencil it into your plans now.

What other alternatives do you recommend now that ample hill has closed?

' src=

I am confused. This article raved about beaches and cream. But I also read something by you that said the Ice cream place across the way at the Boardwalk had better ice cream. So, which is actually better in your opinion?

' src=

Did we get a confirmation of when exactly this is closing for remodelling?

Sorry I resubmitted this. The first reply wasn’t showing up on my end.

Have you heard a definite date for this to close yet?

' src=

Is it going to be impossible to get ADR for 8 people for Beaches and Cream? I was able to get to reservations for 4 within 10 minutes of each other. Will we be able to sit together, or only 2 booths? We’re just going to have the ice cream honestly.

' src=

The Plaza Ice Cream Parlor on Main Street in Magic Kingdom has a Mickey’s Kitchen Sink sundae (it looks like Mickey’s pants and you get to keep the sink/pants), not nearly as big as the kitchen sink at Beaches and Cream (you can’t keep the sink that the ice cream comes in from there).

' src=

Shattered 🙁 we are coming over from Australia in October for our honeymoon and had my heart set on getting the Kitchen Sink. Is there anything similar anywhere else I could get as an alternative?

' src=

The Earthquake at Ghirardelli is probably the closest thing.

There are also some great options at Ample Hills Creamery (the ice cream there is much better, IMO).

Alternatively, if you’re looking for something that’s a bit of a “challenge” (but more delicious), the S’mores Baked Alaska at Boathouse is tough to beat.

' src=

I’m gutted we are booked into the beach club in November and were looking forward to the arcade and Beaches and Cream! I’m hoping there won’t be too much disturbance while we are there.

' src=

We feel the same way. We’ll be there for a week in November and was using it as an excuse to visit Beaches and Cream more often. We had intended to make a number of reservations and use it as essentially as a quick service seeing as there isn’t much else in the area.

' src=

I may be the only one sad about the arcade closing. But I have childhood memories of going there and to beaches and cream. Nothing can replace those two places, but it does need an expansion. They better not mess with the grilled cheese and tomatoe soup! Seriously epic. And I’m a little salty about it getting the trendy milkshakes. They’re neat but beaches and cream has its own unique thing, it doesn’t need to be trendy.

For what it’s worth, the arcade permanently closing is not a sure thing–just my prediction.

' src=

This one ranks (for us) as one of the worst Disney restaurants we’ve been to. It joins Mama Rose and Via Napoli as “never again!” places. But it’s even worse because of the location. At least Mama Rose (Hollywood Studios) and Via Napoli (Epcot) are in parks so they’re easier to get to.

The restaurant is really small. I mean REALLY small. That’s why it’s so difficult to get an ADR there. It’s got 3 booths, not that many more small tables, and seating for 8 at the counter. That’s it.

But that’s not why it’s a “never again.” The food and the service! It’s really bad. We waited forever for our food. When we got it, my granddaughter’s food was cold. We had to then wait again for our server to reappear to send it back for some hot food.

I got the turkey club. I don’t think I even ate half of it. The turkey was suspiciously chewy in some places and hard in others.

Total waste of money and a mistake I won’t repeat.

' src=

This is totally not a typical experience for Beaches and Cream. Getting reservations ahead of time can be very difficult, and sometimes, you have to wait a little long for the food. I’ll give you that, but we have never (in 20+ times visiting) had any of the other problems that you describe. How unfortunate! Maybe you’ll try one more time, and they can redeem themselves.

' src=

Would you need a reservation to just get ice cream? Do they have anything ‘to go ‘?

They have a to-go order line in the restaurant, but through a separate door.

' src=

We r head to the Beach Club in 2 weeks. What is your recommendation on best time to get a seat at Beaches& Cream without an ADR?

' src=

We love Beaches & Cream and like to make it our first-night meal — a practical choice since it doesn’t require theme park admission.

Our best memory is our first trip: I excused myself from the table and quietly ordered one — my husband and I had agreed upon this ahead of time, but the kids had no idea such a thing existed. A few minutes later the waitress flicked the lights on and off and announced that SOMEONE had just ordered this holy grail of all ice cream sundaes. She walked around the small restaurants letting everyone have a look at the giant dish while loudly announcing all the ingredients. My girls were drooling but had no idea that the ice cream was FOR THEM, and when she plopped it down on OUR TABLE … well, I think it was one of the best moments of their childhoods. The whole restaurant was looking at us, and several tables immediately ordered Kitchen Sinks of their own. The kids talked about that sundae for a solid year, and even today — a dozen years later? — they still remember that day.

Two practical comments on the Kitchen Sink: – One kitchen sink is cheaper than individual sundaes for a family of four. – Note that they make three different versions: The Original, Chocolate Lovers, and Neopolitan.

' src=

Do you need to make an ADR to go just for dessert ?

' src=

very good info. thanks Tom. do you know B&C ice cream vendor? I have read it is either Edy’s, Haagen Daaz or maybe neither. My family are 20+ years fans of WDW and have never tried B&C because every post I have read indicate how difficult is to book time or certainly to walk-in without reservation.

' src=

Thanks for the reminder about needing ADRs for Beaches & Cream. We have a trip coming up and I’d forgotten all about it. Like you said, their Angus burger is great. However, the quality seems to vary. I ordered it in August and October of 2014, and the patty in the second burger had that noticeably strong taste you often get in lower quality beef, making it worse than the burger I had from Landscape of Flavors. Next reservation, I’m taking your suggestion and heading to Crew’s Cup then Beaches & Cream only for dessert.

56m perini navi sailing yacht BAYESIAN yacht sinks off coast of sicily

Live updates: Seven dead in 56m superyacht Bayesian sinking tragedy

Seven people have died in the Bayesian sinking disaster. These include the six missing people who were inside the yacht when it sank, as well as a seventh person who was located shortly after the disaster. The seventh person is understood to be the yacht's chef, Recaldo Thomas. The other six are:

  • British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, once dubbed 'Britain's Bill Gates'
  • Lynch's 18-year-old daughter, Hannah
  • Morgan Stanley's chairman, Jonathan Bloomer
  • Judy Bloomer, wife of Morgan Stanley chairman
  • Chris Morvillo, a lawyer working for London-based law firm Clifford Chance
  • Neda Morvillo, an American jewellery designer and Chris' wife

It is understood that the yacht was being used to celebrate Lynch's recent victory in a 13-year £8 billion fraud acquittal.

No one remembers the mast snapping before 56m superyacht Bayesian sunk, says crew

No one recalls seeing the mast snap on board the 56-metre Perini Navi sailing yacht Bayesian which sank off the Italian island of Sicily on 19 August. The eyewitness account of a crewmember on board the vessel, which was obtained by BOAT International , said that the boat was struck by a freak weather event which led to the yacht heeling at around 20 degrees to starboard. As crewmembers were securing items, the heeling angle began to increase rapidly until the yacht started taking on water and sank rapidly.

The crewmembers who were up on deck were able to evacuate the yacht with minor injuries. The yacht is understood to have sunk in just twelve minutes, and it is believed that a "major ingress" of water from the top down would have caused the sinking, according to a captain who wishes to remain anonymous. This is based on the fact that no breaches have been reported in the yacht's hull, and the fact that the yacht should have been able to remain afloat with two flooded compartments.

"Very difficult to understand what could have overwhelmed a vessel of that size" says captain of sistership

The captain of the sistership to the sunken 56-metre Perini Navi sailing yacht Bayesian has said it is "very difficult to understand what could have overwhelmed a vessel of that size" and called the 56-metre Perini Navi series "bulletproof".

David Hutchinson, captain of Rosehearty , said he had taken the yacht around the world multiple times and he had "total faith in the boat".  "We've been to Antarctica and Chile, and we've had her in 70 knots of wind," he says, and the vessel had never put them in a situation that felt unmanageable.

However, Hutchinson noted there were differences between Bayesian and Rosehearty ; notably, Bayesian's  74-metre mast, which would have been heavier and added increased windage. The yacht's layout was also different, with guest accommodation on Bayesian located further forward.

Live updates

  • During a news conference on Saturday morning (24 August), prosecutors confirmed they are in the early stages of investigating a "crime hypothesis" of culpable shipwreck and manslaughter. Authorities also said the yacht likely sunk because of a downburst (powerful wind that descends from a thunderstorm), rather than a waterspout.
  • A search and rescue for six missing people has concluded. The final missing person is understood to be Hannah Lynch.
  • According to Reuters, six bodies have now been found in the sunken yacht. These include Mike Lynch, a British technology entrepreneur who co-founded Autonomy Corporation and founded Invoke Capital, although Italian authorities have not confirmed this.
  • One person was found immediately after the yacht sunk, and this is understood to be the yacht's chef.
  • Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, and a one-year-old are among the fifteen people rescued along with Bayesian' s captain, James Cutfield.
  • Another sailing vessel in the area, the 42-metre Sir Robert Baden Powell ,  stepped in to offer assistance in the initial rescue.
  • Divers have been able to reach Bayesian' s sunken hull, which lies at 45 metres of depth about half a mile from the coast. The yacht had the largest aluminium masts of any sailing yacht on the water.
  • Eyewitnesses in the area reported "hurricane" conditions off the coast but local weather websites did not indicate any severe squall, which suggests that the weather event was not forecast.
  • At around 5am local time on 19 August, Bayesian was hit by bad weather and sunk.  The sailing yacht was anchored or idle at the time of the incident.

Built in Italy by renowned builder Perini Navi and delivered in 2008, the yacht's naval architecture was developed by Ron Holland Design while the interior design is by Rémi Tessier . She was formerly known as Salute and was last refitted in 2016. She was listed for sale earlier this year, according to BOATPro . The yacht had accommodation for nine guests and 12 crew.

BOAT International will update the story as it develops.

A Waterspout Was Seen When a Luxury Yacht Sank. What Is It?

Witnesses reported seeing the tornado-like phenomenon hit the Bayesian, a sailing yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily on Monday.

  • Share full article

The Bayesian sailing yacht

By Eve Sampson

What caused the sinking on Monday of a sailing yacht carrying the British billionaire Mike Lynch and 21 other people off the coast of Sicily is still unknown. But some attention has focused on observations by witnesses, who described seeing a small tornado-like column known as a waterspout forming over the water during an abrupt and violent storm as the vessel sank.

Fifteen passengers on the 180-foot yacht, the Bayesian, escaped on a raft before being rescued by a neighboring cruise ship. The body of the ship’s cook was recovered on Monday and six people remain unaccounted for , including Mr. Lynch and his daughter Hannah, according to officials with Sicily’s civil protection agency.

Prosecutors in the nearby city of Termini Imerese have opened an inquiry into the cause of the sinking.

Here is what to know about waterspouts, a surprisingly common weather phenomenon that may have helped sink the luxury yacht.

What are waterspouts?

Waterspouts are columns of spinning air and moisture — similar to tornadoes over water, according to the National Weather Service .

While some form in fair weather, and are aptly called fair weather waterspouts, another more dangerous variety called tornadic waterspouts develops downward from a thunderstorm. These tornadic waterspouts can either form as regular tornadoes over land and move out to sea, or form in a storm already over a large body of water, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association .

Fair weather waterspouts are weak, often dissipate quickly and do not cause major damage, according to the agencies, but tornadic waterspouts are more often associated with high winds, dangerous and frequent lightning, and hail. The Italian authorities recorded strong winds and intense lightning activity at the time the yacht went down.

How common are waterspouts?

Experts say waterspouts may be more common than tornadoes, but because oceans are so vast, they are more difficult to track — and as difficult to predict.

“The Mediterranean is possibly one of the places where waterspouts are most likely around the world due to the warm ocean surface and a climate that is very susceptible to thunderstorms throughout the summer and autumn,” according to a statement by Peter Inness, a meteorologist at the University of Reading in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Inness pointed to a 2022 study by scientists from University of Barcelona , which found that waterspouts occurred more frequently over warmer sea surfaces. The North Atlantic ocean has been unusually hot for over a year, repeatedly reaching record highs for the time of year , according to data from the oceanic association.

The International Centre for Waterspout Research on Monday said on X , the platform formerly known as Twitter, that it had confirmed 18 waterspouts near Italy in recent days, and several fishermen in the area of the accident told Italian media that they had witnessed a waterspout near the yacht.

What may have happened?

Karsten Börner, the captain of the nearby boat that rescued the 15 passengers, said in an interview that he saw the Bayesian about 490 feet away before the wind and lightning picked up.

While it was difficult to see what happened amid the storm, “my theory was that she was capsized first and then went down over the stern,” he said.

Towering over 237 feet tall, the Bayesian mast was one of the tallest aluminum masts in the world and it also had a special keel that could be raised or lowered, according to its manufacturer, Perini Navi. A keel is the downward-extending centerline underneath a boat that can help stabilize the vessel.

“In this case, having a tall aluminum mast would not make it the safest port to be in case of a storm,” said Andrea Ratti, associate professor of nautical design and architecture technology the Politecnico di Milano.

He added that “a lot of questions will remain until we have other elements at our disposal.”

Elisabetta Povoledo contributed reporting.

  • Prosecutors have opened a manslaughter investigation into the Bayesian sinking;
  • Officials have revealed more details on their investigation and the difficult five-day rescue mission;
  • The six bodies found during the search in recent days were all in cabins on the left-hand - and highest - side of the ship. Five were found in the first cabin and the sixth was found in the third;
  • Prosecutors said the six passengers were most likely asleep when the boat sank;
  • The probe is now focusing on the crew and their responsibilities, with the captain set to undergo more questioning.

Monday 19 August

The Bayesian yacht, flying a British flag, sinks at around 5am local time when the area was hit by a tornado.

Fifteen people are rescued from the 56 metre vessel - including a mother and baby - but another seven remain missing.

One body, later confirmed to be the yacht's chef Recaldo Thomas, is found near the wreck.

It emerges that British technology tycoon Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah are among six people that remain missing.

Tuesday 20 August

The search continues for the six tourists missing.

It is reported that among those missing are Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer; his wife, Judy Bloomer; Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo; and his wife, Neda Morvillo.

Police divers try to reach the hull of the ship, resting at a depth of 50 metres.

Italy's fire brigade Vigili del Fuoco say early inspections of the wreck were "unsuccessful" because of limited access to the bridge and furniture obstructing passages.

The operation is later described as "complex", with divers limited to 12-minute underwater shifts.

Tributes pour in for Mr Thomas, with his friend Gareth Williams saying: "I can talk for everyone that knew him when I say he was a well-loved, kind human being with a calm spirit."

Wednesday 21 August

The search for the six people unaccounted for enters a third day, with crews carrying out inspections of the yacht's internal hull.

A team of four British inspectors from the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) arrive in Porticello to look at the site of the sinking.

A helicopter is drafted in to help with the search effort and remotely controlled underwater vehicles are being used, with naval units and cave divers also taking part in the search.

Five bodies are found inside the yacht on Wednesday afternoon. Only four of them are brought to shore.

Body bags are seen being taken to Porticello in the afternoon where dozens of emergency services staff wait.

Searches finish for the day just before 7.30pm.

Thursday 22 August

The search resumes for the remaining missing person.

The body of the fifth missing person, found but not recovered the previous day, is brought to shore.

A fire service boat with flashing blue lights returns with a blue body bag to the port of Porticello just after 8.45am local time on Thursday.

Tributes pour in for Mr Lynch and Mr and Mrs Bloomer after they are identified as having died.

The search is called off at around 8pm in Sicily, with divers expected to begin again at 6.30am on Friday.

Friday 23  August

The search continues for the final person missing from the wreck of the Bayesian, Hannah Lynch.

Vincenzo Zagarola, of the Italian Coastguard, says the search for Hannah has not been "easy or quick", comparing the sunken yacht to an "18-storey building full of water".

The coastguard confirms in the late morning that her body has been found.

A green body bag is brought to the port of Porticello from the site of the sinking.

A spokesperson announces on behalf of the Lynch family that they are "devastated" and "in shock" after the deaths of Mike and Hannah.

Hannah's sister Esme pays tribute to her "little angel".

Saturday 24 August

A press conference is held in the court of an Italian town, Termini Imerese.

Public prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio tells reporters that his office has opened an initial investigation against unknown persons into manslaughter and negligent shipwreck.

As the focus now turns to the manslaughter investigation, here's another reminder of the seven victims of the sinking and the 15 people who survived.

A close friend of the Lynch family has added to the chorus of tributes for British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, who died in Monday's superyacht sinking.

Susannah Gurdun, who lives in Suffolk, recalled being "daunted" when she first met Mr Lynch at a dinner party, before discovering he was "so much more than the corporate cliche".

"He was riveting.  He was funny, and kind, and endlessly interesting; capable of talking about anything and everything," she said.

Ms Gardun said the businessman also had a "thrilling ability" to make complicated subjects "accessible to those of us less blessed with a science acumen".

"In particular, he was wonderful with children.  I will never forget hearing him explain to a group of them - including our ten year old son - the physics of why the sky went pink at sunset," she said.

She went on describe Mr Lynch as a "true genius" and "phenomenal creative".

Ms Gardun said his daughter Hannah was also showing "serious literary promise", and added that it was "beyond tragic that we will never know where her own particular brilliance might have led".

"I still feel blessed to have shared that time with them in Spain.  Not just because I witnessed Mike’s incredible storytelling; but because I was given a chance of understanding what that moment said about all four of them as a united vibrant loving family," she said.

"He was an extraordinary human being and it was - truly - a privilege to have known him."

A yacht crew member who survived the sinking has paid tribute to Hannah Lynch, calling her a "diamond in a sea of stars".

Sasha Murray, chief stewardess of the Bayesian, has released a statement after divers recovered the final missing body from the wreckage, which is believed to be 18-year-old Hannah.

"Those who knew her will know that Hannah was a diamond in a sea of stars," she said.

"Bright, beautiful and always shining. What most people may not have seen was the extraordinarily strong, deep and loving relationship she shared with her parents, whom she adored more than anything.

"While swimming with them she often said, if anything ever happened she would save them.

"I have no doubt that the Irish, Latina fire that burns in her soul kept that spirited determination alive."

Ms Murray's statement comes as a new image of Hannah Lynch and her father Mike Lynch is released:

Prosecutors announced in this morning's news conference that they have opened a manslaughter and negligent shipwreck investigation.

Officials were unable to answer several queries from the media, saying they needed time to establish the facts, but what are the key questions facing prosecutors?

Why weren't passengers who remained on board the vessel warned about escaping from the yacht?

The prosecutor in charge of the case, Raffaele Cammarano, suggested that some passengers may have been asleep when others were awake.

Asked why they were not woken up or alerted, he said that is something investigators are trying to work out from the statements of the survivors.

He called it an "essential" part of the inquiry.

Why were several of the passengers in one cabin?

The press conference heard several bodies onboard the sunken yacht were found in a single cabin which was not theirs.

Mr Cammarano said investigators currently do not know the reason for them being discovered in the same cabin.

The chief of the Palermo fire service, Bentivoglio Fiandra, said the yacht pinned to the right and suggested people tried to go on the other side, taking refuge in cabins in the higher part of the wreck.

Why did the boat sink?

The vessel had been deemed "unsinkable" by its manufacturer - Italian shipyard Perini Navi.

The Bayesian was hit by a downburst, according to Mr Cammarano, which are powerful winds that descend from a thunderstorm and spread out quickly once they hit the ground.

Officials will look into the safety equipment on the sunken vessel.

Mr Cammarano was asked about whether there is a black box and if the hatches were left open.

He said investigators do not have exact information about the black box and that the first phase of the inquiry will look into it.

Why were nearby vessels not similarly affected?

Another yacht, the Sir Robert BP, was about 150 to 200 metres from the Bayesian when extreme weather hit.

Its crew helped to rescue 15 people from the stricken vessel.

Italian officials said they would be looking at how the downburst could affect one vehicle and not other nearby vessels.

What weather warnings was the Bayesian alerted to?

Maritime director of western Sicily, Rear Admiral Raffaele Macauda, said the weather at the time of the yacht's sinking was abnormal and there was nothing to suggest such an extreme situation would arise.

He said there were forecasts of winds and a storm alert, but there was no warning of a tornado.

"Given that the conditions were such, there wasn't anything to suggest there could be an extreme situation arising," he said.

"There are vessels that can monitor, after all, these events and one would have thought that the captain had taken precautions."

How long will it take to recover the sailing vessel?

Mr Macauda could not confirm how long it would take to retrieve the shipwreck of the sunken yacht.

"Everything depends on the availability of the owners and the timeframe of the retrieval of the wreck and of course all that has to be submitted to the port authorities and in parallel of course there will be the inquiry results and it's only really then that we will be able to authorise the operation," he said.

"I can't say, like some experts who have already spoken on the subject, [said] that it will be eight weeks."

He made clear that the owners will bear the full cost of retrieval, although he could not estimate the figure.

Italian authorities detailed the challenging and meticulous rescue operation to recover the six missing people from the Bayesian wreck (see 9.18am post).

But why was the five-day search so difficult?

More on this morning's press conference.

One of the main updates from prosecutors was that they have opened manslaughter and shipwreck investigations after the deaths of seven people in the Bayesian sinking.

Watch the announcement below...

Prosecutors have given a lengthy news conference this morning on their investigation into the sinking of the Bayesian.

Read the full report on the prosecutors' probe below...

Marine investigator James Wilkes has been speaking to Sky News after this morning's press conference.

"Naturally, there are more questions than there are substantive answers at the moment - that's the nature of investigative work.

"Something forced that yacht to roll beyond its nominal stability limits, such that it wasn't able to right itself with the ingress of a certain amount of seawater that was coming into the yacht.

"So the investigators are going to ask themselves one initial question - what must the conditions have been for this to happen?

"Then they are going to look at the contributing factors to the yacht, sinking, and, and the unfortunate loss of life."

Prosecutors said this morning that the future of the investigation is reliant on recovering the wreck.

Mr Wilkes said the yacht is a "major piece of physical evidence in and of itself."

"It's lying at 50 metres, which is a recoverable depth.

"If it was significantly deeper, then I'm not sure they'd be considering salvage at this stage or certainly, the salvage question would be a lot more complicated to answer.

"But if there was the ability to raise that yacht in one piece safely, then it gives the investigators physically more to look at."

Mr Wilkes said he was unsure if the yacht would have a "black box" - called a voyage data recorder in shipping.

"It would record things like GPS position, heading speed, engine telemetry, whether the radars were on, what they were recording, alarms, communications from the yacht itself, any audio on the bridge.

"But more often than not, these are on merchant ships. The yacht was a commercial yacht in the sense that it could be chartered out so it's quite possible it has a voyage data recorder on, but I'm not sure that it does. I don't know that as a matter of fact," he said.

Ale & Compass is known for its New England-inspired comfort food. It is part of a larger complex that includes the Ale & Compass Lounge and a small market. If you’re a fan of sweet breakfasts, don’t miss the Dark Chocolate Waffle, which is served with Cherry Compote and Espresso-Mascarpone Cream.

So much yum!

At dinner, the New England Seafood Pot Pie (with shrimp, scallops, crab and vegetables in a flaky crust) is a favorite. You’ll also find classics like steak, roast chicken, and burgers on the menu.

Ale & Compass Lounge

The Ale & Compass Lounge just off the Disney’s Yacht Club Resort lobby is a great place to grab a drink and an appetizer. It was remodeled a few years ago, and the look now is modern and sleek, with nautical touches.

It just seems right to drink a Dark & Stormy or a Regal Manhattan in this classy space. Food is served here from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. nightly, and while it is labeled as appetizers, you can get a burger or a flatbread that is definitely large enough to serve as dinner.

The market at ale & compass.

This quick-service location has a focus on grab-and-go items such as cold sandwiches, fruit cups, and salads. But there is a coffee bar, and there are hot items available here, as well.

Chilled Options

Best bets here include the Ham and Cheese Breakfast Sandwich served on a Pretzel Roll , or the Cuban Sandwich for lunch or dinner. The Market is also a great place to find special, themed cupcakes and other treats around the holidays.

Cape may cafe.

Cape May Cafe is home to a popular character breakfast — the Minnie’s Beach Bash Breakfast. You can usually find Minnie, Donald, Daisy, and Goofy here — and they are all dressed up in adorable beach wear! The buffet is pretty standard breakfast fare, with the Salted Caramel “Beach Buns” as a highlight.

At dinner, the Cape May dinner buffet features New England seafood favorites, including Clam Chowder, snow crab legs, and fried seafood. Do not miss the Oreo Bonbons among the dessert selection here. They are a cookies-and-cream mousse-filled bonbon on top of an Oreo cookie, and they are a perennial DFB favorite!

Beaches and cream.

There’s one place to go when you want large and over-the-top ice cream treats, and that’s Beaches & Cream ! We particularly love the No Way Jose Sundae and Kitchen Sink offerings.

kitchen sink yacht beach club

Kitchen Sink Sundae

We suggest grabbing the Kitchen Sink only if you’re with a group because it’s a LOT of ice cream to finish! This giant treat includes a scoop of every ice cream on their menu, along with every single one of their toppings , so it really is a challenge! While you do need a reservation to dine inside the restaurant , the to-go window offers ice cream to take with you to your final destination. You can also grab a burger and fries here for lunch or dinner!

Beach club marketplace.

Like The Market at Ale & Compass, Beach Club Marketplace is a quick service location where you will find both hot food and grab-and-go options. The Steak and Egg Breakfast Sandwich with Swiss Cheese and Garlic-Peppercorn Ranch Dressing is a specialty in the mornings.

Rainbow Mickey Caramel Cheesecake

This is another good place to look for fun seasonal treats, like this Rainbow Mickey Caramel Cheesecake we found there for Pride Month. If you’re looking for an inexpensive dinner option, the Half-Roasted Chicken Dinner with mashed potatoes, vegetables, and cornbread is big enough to split and less than $15.

Check Out These BEAUTIFUL Cupcakes We Found at Beach Club Marketplace!

Martha’s vineyard lounge.

We suggest the wings and mussels at Martha’s Vineyard . And if you’re a fan of out-of-this-world drinks, this is a place you will want to check out. The space is designed to be reminiscent of a New England beach house, but we will say that the theming here isn’t great compared to other lounges on the property.

kitchen sink yacht beach club

It’s a Candy Cane Mimosa!

We’ve seen candy cane mimosas and jelly bean cocktails at this location before , so Martha’s Vineyard may be a fun place to check out.

Are These Drinks at Martha’s Vineyard a Little TOO crazy? You Tell Us!

Hurricane hanna’s .

Hurricane Hanna’s is the pool bar for the Yacht and Beach Club’s Stormalong Bay pool. You should know that you cannot swim in the pool unless you are a guest of the Yacht Club or Beach Club, but anyone can enjoy a drink or a snack at Hurricane Hanna’s.

kitchen sink yacht beach club

Storm Chaser and Souvenir Cup

The food here will not be the best thing you eat on the trip, but it is decent for a day enjoying the sunshine. Kids’ meals are served in a plastic sand bucket with attached shovel, which is a fun treat that can then be put-to-use playing in the sand! We DO love a good blue drink, and the Storm Chaser — made with Tito’s Handmade Vodka, Bacardi Superior Rum, Blue Curaçao and Sweet-and Sour topped with Sprite — is a fun reason to spend some time watching the action in the pool here.

Yachtsman steakhouse.

We highly recommend Yachtsman Steakhouse as the place you can find some of the best steaks on Disney World property. You will get a traditional steakhouse experience here — one that caters to nearly all tastes.

Filet Mignon at Yachtsman Steakhouse

We definitely recommend ordering the Cognac-Truffle Butter for your steak, and the Truffle Mac and Cheese is a side dish that would please just about anyone. We find the size of the side dishes to be big enough for two — so keep that in mind when ordering here!

Crew’s Cup Lounge

The Crew’s Cup Lounge is right next door to Yachtsman Steakhouse. We love the cozy vibes here! While you won’t find a lot of specialty drinks, the Crew’s Cup Lounge is a good place for beer or a glass of wine, and stocks several scotches and cognacs . It’s also a good place to watch a game if you’re missing watching sports while on vacation.

Starting at 5PM, Crew’s Cup serves a limited menu of favorites from the steakhouse next door. We recommend the Yachtsman Signature Bread (especially the onion pull-apart rolls!), and the Lobster Bisque .

Looking forward to our lunch at Beaches and Cream next month. Lunch choices will probably be chicken sandwiches, followed by dessert (No Way Jose and Strawberry Shortcake). We usually order burgers or grilled cheese, but the chicken sandwich sounds so delicious, so we decided to be a bit different; but we need our favorite desserts.

Experts puzzle over why Bayesian yacht sank. Was it a 'black swan event'?

Portrait of Cybele Mayes-Osterman

The Bayesian set off on a leisurely cruise around Italy's southern coast on a sunny day in late July.

The luxurious super yacht − which boasted one of the largest masts in the world and carried a crew of business moguls, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his family and a chair of Morgan Stanley − set sail from the Amalfi Coast, bound for Sicily.

Less than a month later, the ship had sunk 160 feet under the water , leaving its cook dead and six of its passengers, including at least two Americans, missing and prompting a massive search that has drawn international attention.

Now, experts are trying to piece together why in the early hours Monday the Bayesian was quickly pulled under the waves amid a storm that saw at least one tornado spin up over the water.

Breaking news to start your day smart. Sign up for USA TODAY's Daily Briefing newsletter.

A perfect storm led to Bayesian sinking, experts say

The combination of unlikely factors that could have contributed to the ship's fate constituted a "black swan event," Matthew Schanck, chairman of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, told USA TODAY.

The Bayesian was well-built: A 2008 product of Italian ship maker Perini, it was constructed in accordance with international maritime standards and commercially certified by the U.K.'s Maritime and Coastguard Agency, according to Schanck.

The bout of bad weather that swept the area when the ship went down was also out of the ordinary in the northern Mediterranean, "which isn't renowned for prolonged, significant stormy weather," he said.

"The fact that those two elements have then resulted in the foundering of a super yacht is pretty extraordinary," Schanck said. "These things don't happen every day."

After the ship sank just before 5 a.m. local time, 15 people, including a 1-year-old, were pulled from the water. Some were rescued from a life raft by the crew of a ship docked nearby.

Ricardo Thomas, the ship's cook and a native of Antigua, was found dead, according to authorities.

As of Tuesday, six people were missing, including Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter. Several missing passengers were involved in Lynch's trial on fraud charges, including Jonathan Bloomer, a Morgan Stanley chair who served as his character witness, and one of Lynch's attorneys. Lynch, accused of fraud after he sold his company to electronics giant Hewlett-Packard, was acquitted of all charges weeks ago.

Who is Mike Lynch? UK entrepreneur among those missing after superyacht sinks off Sicily

Tornado formed over unusually hot water

Storms in the area that night may have whipped up a water spout, a tornado over the water , according to local meteorologists.

It was likely triggered by the water's unusual warmth, said Rick Shema, a certified consulting meteorologist who served in the Navy.

"The water spout was an uncommon occurrence," he said. "But again, these things happen, especially in warmer water."

At 83.7 degrees, water in the area was more than 3 degrees hotter than average on the day the Bayesian sank, likely the result of climate change, Shema said.

"Hurricanes can form at 80 degrees. This was almost four degrees higher than that," he said.

The water spout may have spun up when cooler air dropped from mountainous places nearby onto the hot water, he said. "A water spout is a vortex, basically like a tornado, spinning real fast, sucking up water and moisture as the column rises," he said.

Although water spouts only reach around 120 mph, as compared with tornadoes on land, which can reach up to 300 mph, "you don't need 200 mph to sink a ship," he said.

"Even an average tornado, 120 miles an hour, that's a lot of wind," he said, "which would heel the boat over for sure."

Water spouts spring up suddenly, Shema said. Before they strike, winds can be slow, but "once the water spout comes over, bam, it's on," he said.

Before sunrise, the ship's crew may not have seen the water spout coming. "The visibility was probably a big factor," he said.

With the windows of the yacht opened, as they likely were in the hot weather, the water spout could have triggered water that flooded through the portholes, Shema said, causing the ship to sink.

Tragedy strikes: Scramble to find survivors after Bayesian yacht sinks off Sicily coast

Search continues, but shift to recovery phase approaches

Italian authorities said the Bayesian was probably at anchor when the storm struck, meaning it couldn't maneuver and ride the waves, according to Mitchell Stoller, a captain and maritime expert witness. Other ships in the area that turned on their engines rode out the storm, he said.

"When you're at anchor and you see weather, you start your engine and you put the wind on the bow. You don't let it get on the side," he said.

Schanck said another key question concerns the position of the keel, a heavy weight underneath the boat that acts as a counterbalance to keep it upright, when the ship sank. When lifted, "that's going to affect the stability of the vessel, because, obviously, you've now raised the center of gravity of that vessel," he said.

The Bayesian was floating over 160 feet of water at the time, deep enough that the keel would likely be deployed. But the fact that "the vessel heeled over so heavily makes me question that," Schanck said.

The cause of the disaster may not be known until the ship can be examined in more detail, experts say. Prosecutors in a nearby town have already opened an investigation.

Schanck said investigators will have plenty to work with once the operation moves into a recovery phase.

"The vessel is intact and in good condition on the seabed," he said. "There's a lot of eyewitness accounts from other vessels in the area and the shore."

As the search entered its second day on Tuesday, the rescue effort may shift in that direction soon. "I suspect, later on, today or tomorrow, we'll probably see some mention of a recovery operation being stated," Schanck said.

The decision to would depend on whether rescuers find signs of life in the ship and air pockets or survivable spaces, Schanck said. At this point, survivors on the water's surface looks unlikely. "My professional opinion is that the casualties will be located within the vessel," he said.

"There is a risk versus benefit in all maritime search and rescue incidents," he said. "Where we start transitioning to a recovery phase, that line shifts."

Huntington Beach city clerk race heats up

Regina Blankenhorn, left, and Lisa Lane Barnes, right, are the two candidates for the office of Huntington Beach city clerk.

  • Copy Link URL Copied!

For the first time in more than eight years, Huntington Beach voters will seat a new city clerk when the general election is held in November.

Current City Clerk Robin Estanislau is retiring, and two candidates — Regina Blankenhorn and Lisa Lane Barnes — are vying for a four-year term.

The first couple of weeks of the campaign have already proven contentious.

Barnes hired an attorney to challenge Blankenhorn’s ballot designation of “city executive coordinator.” Her team argued that this was misleading, since Blankenhorn held that position in the city of Tustin — not in Huntington Beach.

“The ballot designation is very important, and when you use the word ‘city’ … it implies that you work in that city,” Barnes said. “Your ballot designation cannot be misleading, and that is misleading.”

The issue did not require litigation. On Monday, Estanislau agreed to reject Blankenhorn’s initial ballot designation and change it to her second alternative “municipal executive coordinator.”

Blankenhorn said she respected the decision.

“Executive coordinator is my job title, and I work for a city,” she said. “I thought it made sense. They said it was misleading, that people would think I was appointed to something or that I worked in Huntington Beach. I was like, everyone Googled me already and found out I worked for Tustin.”

Lisa Lane Barnes is currently a member of Huntington Beach's Community and Library Services Commission.

For the record, Barnes’ ballot designation lists her as “businesswoman/Huntington Beach commissioner.”

Blankenhorn has been an executive coordinator for Tustin for 11 years, providing support to its city manager and city council in their dealings with the public and outside agencies, including media, while ensuring that policies and procedures are adhered to by the council.

A 25-year resident of Huntington Beach, she was previously an instructor in the Coastline Regional Occupational Program. She’s currently the chairperson for the Enterprise Corp. for the Coast Community College District, a for-profit corporation that operates the swap meets at Orange Coast and Golden West colleges.

Blankenhorn, who said she was listed as No Party Preference for years before recently registering as a Democrat, believes her experience in municipal government sets her apart.

“I want to make sure that a person who’s in there is experienced, because that person is going to be a department head and they’re going to have to lead that department and staff,” she said. “It’s not just a matter of conducting city council meetings. The city clerk is the elections official, and they’re also the records keeper.”

Among Blankenhorn’s endorsements are the city clerk of Laguna Beach, Ann Marie McKay.

Blankenhorn said that when she found out that Barnes was the only one running at the time, she decided to throw her hat in the ring.

“I didn’t know her name,” Blankenhorn said. “I just knew someone was running that was a Realtor in town and had absolutely no municipal government experience. I thought that was wrong. As a resident myself, I would not want to have an inexperienced person in that position. So that’s why I decided to run.”

Regina Blankenhorn was an ROP teacher before landing her current position working for the city of Tustin.

Barnes countered that she directly serves the City Council in her current role as a Community and Library Services Commissioner , a position to which she was appointed by Councilman Tony Strickland in 2022.

Her background is is business. She said she previously worked for a global chemical manufacturing company before settling in as a local real estate agent two years ago.

“It’s always been one of my goals to be deeply involved with my community,” said Barnes, who has lived in Huntington Beach for a dozen years. “When I was working corporately, I did a lot of travel, and that really prohibited spending as much time as I would like to within our community. When that changed and I became a Realtor, it was a great opportunity for me to really anchor myself in the city and just become involved.”

She sees becoming the city clerk as an extension of that. As to Blankenhorn’s contention that she is unqualified, she noted that she’s proud to be on a commission that advises the City Council on what to do with Huntington Beach’s 78 parks, five libraries and one golf course.

Barnes said she has conservative values. She has endorsements from the Republican Party of Orange County, Mayor Gracey Van Der Mark, Mayor Pro Tem Pat Burns, City Atty. Michael Gates and state Sen. Janet Nguyen, whose District 36 includes Huntington Beach.

“I’m embedded in the fabric of this community,” Barnes said. “I’ve never met [Blankenhorn], I’ve never seen her at a City Council meeting. I’ve never seen her at a city event in Huntington Beach, because she’s in Tustin.”

Huntington Beach City Clerk Robin Estanislau is retiring after eight years in her role.

As the conductor of municipal elections, the city clerk could see increased importance in Surf City in future years.

In March, Huntington Beach voters approved Measure A , which means the city could require voter identification, provide more in-person voting locations and monitor ballot drop-boxes starting in 2026. Weeks later, California Atty. General Rob Bonta and Secretary of State Shirley Weber filed a lawsuit in Orange County Superior Court , arguing that Measure A was illegal and preempted by state law.

Blankenhorn said she’d be ready to go on day one if elected.

“When I don’t know something, I’m going to have my staff to help me, guide me and direct me,” she said. “And I’ll have other city clerks that I can turn to. I know city clerks.”

Barnes also believes she is qualified, adding that the livelihood and well-being of the community were important to her.

“When I became involved, I loved it,” she said. “I absolutely loved it, and I wanted to do more for our community … I believe I am the best candidate.”

News, notes and thoughts:

10 October, 2012   / On Tuesday, powerful explosion occurred about 20 km from Orenburg. The power of the explosion was 3-4 kilotons of TNT, which is equal to the blast of 300 train cars with shells. This is not the first such incident in Russia in recent years - explosions at ammunition depots occur with surprising regularity.

History of Orenburg

Foundation of orenburg.

In October 1715, a significant part of the meeting of Kazakh elders headed by Abulkhair Khan spoke out in favor of adopting an act on the voluntary annexation of the Younger Zhuz of Kazakhs (a significant part of today’s western Kazakhstan) to the Russian Empire. In 1734, Abulkhair Khan pledged to protect the security of the Russian borders and merchant caravans passing through the Kazakh steppes.

As a reward for this, he asked to approve the khan’s succession to the throne for his family and build a town with a fortress on the Or River, where he could find refuge in case of danger. In 1735, the Orenburg fortress was laid at the confluence of the Or and Yaik (Ural) rivers.

In 1739, river floods in this place forced preparations for the construction of a new town with the same name downstream of the Yaik River, on Krasnaya (Red) Mountain. In 1741, it was founded. The old town was named the Orsk fortress (the present city of Orsk), but the construction of the new town did not begin as the chosen place was treeless, rocky and remote from the river - unsuitable for town construction.

In 1743, Orenburg was founded for the third time, on the site of the former Berd fortress, at the confluence of the Sakmara River with the Yaik. Today, it is the historic center of the city. Since Orenburg was originally founded on the Or River, it was named Orenburg - a town on the Or. In connection with such a confusing history of founding, Orenburg is called three times conceived and once born.

In 1744, it became the center of the Orenburg Governorate stretching from the Volga River to Siberia, from the Kama River to the Caspian Sea. Orenburg was built as a fortress town guarding the southeastern border of the Russian Empire. At the same time, it was supposed to serve as a center of trade with the peoples of the East. Therefore Orenburg had both military and commercial significance.

More Historical Facts…

Orenburg in the late 18th - 19th centuries

During the peasant war of 1773-1775, Orenburg underwent a long siege under the leadership of Yemelyan Pugachev. At that time, it was the main fortress in the south-east of the country. Powerful fortifications allowed Orenburg to withstand a six-month siege. After the suppression of the uprising, as punishment, Empress Catherine II renamed the Yaitsk Cossacks into the Ural Cossacks, the Yaitsk town - into Uralsk, the Yaik River - into the Ural River.

For the successful defense of the fortress, the townspeople of Orenburg were presented with the cross of St. Andrew the First-Called (X). Today, this cross is depicted on the flag and coat of arms of Orenburg.

In 1811, the population of Orenburg was about 5,400 people. At the end of the 18th - beginning of the 19th centuries, the first Catholics appeared in Orenburg, since after the divisions of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth a large number of Poles were exiled here. In the 19th century, the Polish diaspora in Orenburg increased because of the exiled participants of the Polish uprisings. In 1847, a Catholic church was built and consecrated in Orenburg (this building has been preserved and can be found at 8th Marta Street, 24).

In 1862, the Orenburg fortress was officially abolished due to the loss of its strategic importance. The functions of a border outpost on the southern borders of the Russian Empire were transferred to Tashkent. The liquidation of the fortress coincided with the abolition of serfdom and the development of capitalism in the country, which gave a powerful impetus to the development of Orenburg. In 1863, its population was about 27,600 people.

The town was a major center of trade between the Russian Empire and Central Asia. The local industry (production of flour, oil, leather) began to develop rapidly with the construction of the Samara - Orenburg railway in 1877. The Orenburg region also became famous for its downy shawls knitted from the down of specially bred Orenburg goats.

Orenburg also became a major trade and distribution center for livestock and meat coming from the Kazakh steppes. In 1881, the first in the Russian Empire plant for the production of condensed milk was opened in Orenburg. In 1894, the construction of the Kazan Cathedral was completed - one of the main symbols of the city (destroyed in the 1930s).

Orenburg in the first half of the 20th century

At the beginning of the 20th century, Orenburg was a major trade and economic center. In 1905, the construction of the Tashkent railway was completed, which opened the way to Central Asia and made the city an important transport hub.

In 1914, the population of Orenburg, the largest city in the Urals, was about 100 thousand people. During the anti-German campaign in connection with the outbreak of the First World War, the Orenburg City Duma considered the issue of renaming the city (at the same time Saint Petersburg was renamed Petrograd). Here are some of the proposed new names: Oriengrad, Oriendar, Yaitsk, Priuralsk, Neplyuevsk, Sakmaro-Uralsk. However, the renaming did not take place at that time.

Interesting fact. Orenburg was the first capital of Soviet Kazakhstan. In 1920, this city became the administrative center of the created Kyrgyz Autonomous Socialist Soviet Republic (the Kazakhs were officially called the Kyrgyz at that time). In April 1925, the Kyrgyz ASSR was renamed the Kazakh ASSR, and its capital was moved from Orenburg to Ak-Mechet, renamed Kzyl-Orda.

Orenburg became part of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic. In December 1934, it became the capital of Orenburg Oblast. In the 1930s, almost all of its more than 40 Orthodox religious buildings were demolished. Without these architectural dominants, Orenburg largely lost its unique and attractive historical appearance.

On December 26, 1938, Orenburg was renamed Chkalov in honor of the deceased test pilot V.P. Chkalov, despite the fact that Chkalov had never visited this city. The renaming was also explained by the fact that there were plans to make Orenburg “the aviation capital of the USSR”. In 1939, a downy shawl factory was opened. The population of Orenburg was about 172 thousand people.

During the Second World War, about 40 factories were evacuated to Orenburg and it became an industrial center. By May 1942, the number of people evacuated here reached 75 thousand. By 1943, the gross industrial output of the Orenburg region increased more than 4 times since the beginning of the war.

Orenburg in the second half of the 20th century and beyond

On November 7, 1953, a monument to Valery Chkalov was unveiled. On December 4, 1957, the original name was returned to the city - Orenburg. In 1959, its population was 267 thousand people.

Yuri Gagarin, the first human to journey into outer space, trained as a pilot at the Orenburg Military Aviation Flight School. Gagarin is an honorary citizen of Orenburg. In 1961, the MiG-15 - a fighter jet that cadet Gagarin flew on - was installed on a pedestal near the aviation school. The House-Museum of Cosmonautics was also opened there with some of Gagarin’s personal belongings.

In November 1966, on the left bank of the Ural River, not far from the city, a large Orenburg oil and gas condensate field was discovered. A new Orenburg territorial-industrial complex of all-Union significance began to form. It was based on gas production, processing and transportation enterprises. This event can be called the second birth of Orenburg. In less than 10 years, it became one of the largest natural gas suppliers in Russia.

In 1979, according to the All-Union census, the population of Orenburg was 458 thousand people. In connection with the development of the Orenburg gas condensate field, urban planning activities received a powerful impetus for rapid development. About 30 kilometers from Orenburg, a unique gas processing plant, the largest in Europe, was built according to the project of French specialists.

In 1989, the population of Orenburg was about 546 thousand people. After the collapse of the USSR, Orenburg experienced some depopulation in the 1990s. In the late 1990s, the gas field began to run out.

At the beginning of the 21st century, the development of the city began again, associated primarily with the activities of the enterprise “Gazprom dobycha Orenburg”.

Orenburg - Features

According to popular belief, Orenburg is located both in Europe and Asia. On the pedestrian bridge across the Ural River you can see a symbolic sign of the border between Europe and Asia. However, this border was not officially recognized by the International Geographical Union in 1959, when the opinion of Soviet scientists was accepted about the border between Europe and Asia.

By their definition, the Ural River is a natural water border between Asia and Europe only in its upper reaches on the territory of Russia. In the place where Orenburg is located, it is a completely European river and from a geographical point of view Orenburg can be considered a European city.

The climate of Orenburg is moderately continental transitional to sharply continental. Summers are hot and dry, winters are moderately cold. Temperatures fluctuate greatly depending on the time of day and wind direction. In summer, the temperature can rise to plus 40 degrees Celsius or drop to plus 5 degrees Celsius.

In winter, the weather ranges from mild frosts to severe cold weather, sometimes mild thaws or severe colds down to minus 40 degrees Celsius. The average temperature in January is minus 11.8 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 22.3 degrees Celsius.

On the coat of arms of Orenburg repeating the historical coat of arms adopted at the end of the 18th century, you can see a schematic representation of the Ural River. The Azure Cross of St. Andrew (X) is an award given to the garrison of Orenburg for its successful defense during the siege by the troops of Yemelyan Pugachev (the peasant war of 1773-1775).

In the industry of Orenburg, the leading places belong to the gas production and gas processing industries, mechanical engineering and metalworking. The enterprises of the chemical industry, food and light industries are also developed.

Orenburg is a large railway junction where the railway lines to Samara, Orsk, Ufa, Uralsk (Kazakhstan), Aktobe (Kazakhstan) intersect. The federal highway R239 Kazan - Orenburg - Akbulak - the border with the Republic of Kazakhstan passes through the city. Orenburg Central International Airport named after Yuri Gagarin offers regular flights to Moscow, St. Petersburg, Sochi, Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg, Kazan, Ufa, Novy Urengoy.

One of the symbols of this city are unique Orenburg shawls made of goat down, which are distinguished by fine workmanship, original pattern, beauty of decoration, durability, and ability to keep warm.

Remarkable architectural monuments that have survived since the founding of the city, monumental art, local traditions create a special unique atmosphere of the city and rightfully allow Orenburg to be considered a unique city with a rich culture and history.

Main Attractions of Orenburg

Sovetskaya Street - the main tourist alley of Orenburg, about 3 km long; part of it is completely pedestrian. An interesting story can be told about almost every building located on this street: the house #1 is the aviation school, which Yuri Gagarin graduated from; the house #2 - the former residence of the military governors of Orenburg; in the house #3, the Decembrists lived in the 1820s; the house #4 - one of the oldest buildings in Orenburg, constructed in the middle of the 18th century; the house #23 - Orenburg Gostiny Dvor; the house #26 - the drama theater named after Maxim Gorky (one of the oldest theaters in the Urals); the house #27 - a picturesque clock tower; the house #28 - Orenburg Museum of History and Local Lore.

The bridge leads from the historic center of Orenburg to the park “Zauralnaya Roscha”.

Aerial Lift “Europe-Asia” . In 2006, parallel to “White Bridge”, a 233-meter aerial lift (cable car) was opened, along which you can get from Europe to Asia by air in cozy translucent cabins. During the trip, which takes about 5 minutes, you can take pictures of the Ural River, the bridge and the Orenburg embankment from a height of 70 meters. It can be found opposite the house #16 on Naberezhnaya Street.

Museum of the History of Orenburg - a local history museum located next to the aerial lift “Europe-Asia” in a picturesque red brick building constructed in the middle of the 19th century, an interesting architectural monument resembling a medieval castle. It represents the national farmsteads of the peoples living in the Orenburg region: Russians, Tatars, Kazakhs, Ukrainians, Bashkirs, Mordvinians, Belarusians, Armenians, Germans, Chuvash. On the territory of the complex there are museums of everyday life and culture, restaurants of national cuisine, libraries with literature in different languages, and souvenir shops.

Various events are often held here, including performances by folklore ensembles, traditional festivities. This is a great place to see a variety of architectural styles, get to know the traditions and cultures of different nations. Altayskaya Street, 5.

Cathedral of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker (1883-1886) - the only church in Orenburg not demolished in the 1930s. Divine services in the church began to be held again in 1944. In the 1980s-1990s, the building was restored and expanded. Today, it is one of the most visited churches in Orenburg. Chkalova Street, 8.

Historical and Architectural Complex “Caravanserai” (1837-1846) - one of the most important sights of the southern Urals embodying the most striking national and stylistic features of the architecture of the Orenburg region of the 19th century, an architectural monument consisting of the main building, a mosque, and a minaret.
