Product Description

Cruise around town in fun style with the Landyachtz Condor Paradise 41" Pintail Longboard.

Another long-standing part of our lineup, the Condor features a snappy flex and a shorter wheelbase than other pintails. This results in a tight-turning, responsive ride that will make your weekday commute or a casual weekend cruise the highlight of your day.

A classic never goes out of style, this flexy, pintail shape longboard comes in at 41" long by 9.9" wide to give you a large, comfortable platform for cruising around town. Its 7-ply construction gives it enough flex for super playful carving and to soak up any roughness from the pavement.

This year we're building these completes with 155mm Gen 6 Grizzly trucks for even tighter turning and deeper carves. The completes are finished off with our 63mm Fatty Hawgs for ultimate roll speed and grip.

Specifications:

  • Length: 41.0"
  • Width: 9.9"
  • Construction: 7-ply Canadian Maple
  • Truck Mount: Top Mount
  • Rocker profile with medium concave.
  • Hawgs 63mm 78a wheels.
  • Gen 6 Bear reverse kingpin trucks.
  • Bear Space Balls Abec 7 bearings.
  • Artist: Monster Rally

Note: Due to high demand and limited production capacity, the color of the wheels on this complete may vary,  t his board is currently being shipped with Clear Black Fatty Hawgs.

Landyachtz Chief Review: An Amazing Pintail Cruiser

Sharing is caring!

I’ve been riding my Landyachtz Chief longboard for months and I’m more and more in love with it, so I thought I’d write a post about it to share my experience.

Why choose the Landyachtz Chief? It’s an amazing small pintail longboard designed for cruising and carving in the city and on the boardwalk. It is highly responsive and fast-turning, with a high-quality flexy deck – particularly the bamboo version. The slight rocker and concave make it very snappy and comfortable. The Grizzly trucks are great for carving and pumping, and the Fatty Hawg wheels are super smooth rolling even rougher roads.

Traditionally, pintails work best for leisurely cruising around and hanging out. I found my Landyachtz, however, is capable of handling more technical riding styles. See it here on Amazon .

What is the Landyachtz Chief good for?

The Chief is designed for carving and cruising in relatively crowded spaces. I like to use mine on the boardwalk along the beach, which does tend to get busy on weekends. The Chief is a compact and agile, being a relatively small pintail with a short wheelbase compared to classic pintails.

Besides wheelbase, the Chief’s topmount construction makes it super responsive with very quick and precise turns. On the flip side, the Chief rides relatively high above the ground (again it’s topmount ) but that’s somewhat offset by its rocker and flex, making pushing easier and giving you the best of both worlds – responsiveness and manageable height.

Again, the first thing that strikes you when riding this quality board is the maneuverability and the instant turns . I personally love it.

Landyatchz Chief shape

As mentioned earlier, the Chief is a classic pintail , i.e. shaped like a tear drop with a pointy tail and a wider nose. You can also say it has the shape of a longboard surfboard, only much smaller. The chief is 36″ long and 8.75″ wide, with a tight 26.5″ wheelbase .

Landyachtz has based the Chief’s pintail design off of the Pinner and Totem, two of its predecessors, but with the added goal of creating a smaller, more nimble carving cruiser for city  cruising.

As a result, the Chief is the most responsive and lightweight pintail of Landyachtz’s lineup. It’s a very reactive and turny board, to a degree one may not expect from a pintail. For this reason, the Chief may not be the best option for a complete beginner looking for a very forgiving first board.

The Chief even has a very slight kicktail  (with a very low angle), which confirms the board’s focus on carving and quick turns.

Besides its shape and size which make it super responsive, the Chief is also extremely comfortable to ride on whatever your level. The reasons for that great comfort feeling are:

  • The shallow rocker which cradles your feet nice and comfy, yet without keeping them from moving freely – a cruiser board shouldn’t lock your feet in too much to let you move around on the deck
  • The mellow radial concave with slightly upraised edges provide grip and a nice leverage on the rails for carving . You feel it under the ball and heel of your feet but in a mellow way.

landyachtz chief radial concave

In short, the Chief gives you the freedom of a flat pintail deck with the added comfort and secure feel of a shallow concave. The subtle rocker and the flex contribute to that feeling (keep reading for more about flex).

Landyachtz Chief versions

The Landyachtz Chief comes in 2 versions (and 4 graphic designs): a bamboo version and a maple version . I personally own the bamboo but I’ve had the chance to test the maple version.

The bamboo versions include the Bamboo Chief Fish (my board), the Bamboo Chief Eyes (Amazon), and the Bamboo Chief Camping .

I for one am a really big fan of the looks of my Bamboo Chief Fish with its turquoise bottom background and edges, the while lines graphic on the bottom, and the turquoise fish drawing that sticks out on the top showing through the clear spray-on grip!

Landyachtz Bamboo Chief Fish

UPDATE : unfortunately it seems the Chief Fish version is no longer available!

I have to admit the Bamboo Chief Eyes looks pretty awesome too:

Landyachtz Bamboo Chief Eyes

The Bamboo Chief Camping is also very attractive:

Landyachtz Bamboo Chief Camping

Also check out the Chief Bamboo Sunset Kid with its awesome yellow cowboy graphic on a yellow background:

Landyachtz Bamboo Chief Sunset Kid

As always with this material, the bamboo core makes the deck super lightweight , strong , and flexy ! The flex properties contribute to making the Bamboo Chief an amazing carving board for a pintail.

So if you position both your feet close to each other toward the center of the deck where it has the most flex (i.e. away from the truck mounts) you can use the flex to get great rebound and pump tons of energy into your carves.

This combined with the great carving Grizzly trucks really makes this pintail and astonishing carving board (read on for more on trucks).

The maple version of the Chief, the Chief Floral , which has beautiful and colorful graphics (Amazon):

landyachtz pintail

The hardwood Canadian maple used in the maple Chief is very strong and durable. Only 7 plies are used to achieve a relatively lightweight and flexy result given the naturally rigid nature of maple wood – though obviously not as light and flexy as bamboo.

Thus, the version of the Landyachtz Chief you’ll choose will depend on your preferences in terms of flex amount and graphic design. The bamboo models are about $10 more expensive than the maple one, running around $220 (Landyachtz list prices).

Landyachtz Chief trucks

landyachtz pintail

Again, I just love riding that surfboard-like, super comfortable rockered and concaved deck when going for a cruise around the neighborhood or carving along the seaside.

The shape and flex of the deck is not the only reason the Chief is so comfortable and responsive, though. The Bear Grizzly GR852 180mm 52º trucks play an essential role in that responsiveness. These trucks are not only extremely stable and “kook-friendly”, they’re extremely nimble and turny .

A slight pressure on one of the (slightly uplifted) edges is enough to make the trucks turn, yet the amount of turn isn’t excessive unless you dig harder into the rail. That is, these trucks give me exactly the amount and tightness of turn I want each and every time.

I make easy 180º turns on a normal sidewalk – which is not the case with every 36″ cruiser out there, e.g. drop-throughs and classic pintails. When I say this board is responsive and tight turning, I really mean it.

By default, the Chief comes with 1/8″ soft risers. This, combined with the deep CNC/sanded wheel wells on the bottom of the deck above the wheels, pretty much eliminates all wheelbit e even when making those super tight turns – even though I’m running my trucks very loose.

I didn’t expect this when I ordered the Landyachtz Chief as I was just looking for a normal pintail to cruise around on. Turns out I got myself a real carver I can actually pump on and even do some small slides (not what a pintail is meant for).

Landyachtz Chief wheels

landyachtz pintail

The Hawgs wheels that come with the Landyachtz Chief are another high-quality component of the overall pintail package. The Chief ships with either Fatty Hawgs 63mm or Hawgs Mini Monster 70mm wheels, both great and smooth rolling wheels. Both with a 78A duro , they absorb small cracks and bumps very comfortably.

These wheels have a fairly wide 50/55mm contact patch and are offset aligned, making then fast-rolling and grippy for smooth carves . They are capable wheels on different types of terrain, rough or smooth. They’re also pretty good wheels for sliding – although that’s somewhat beyond the Landyachtz Chief’s scope.

Both wheel options come with Bear Spaceball Bearings which keep the Chief’s wheels rolling forever – even more so once your break them in! The Chief almost feels like a different, better board after you ride it for a while, such a super smooth glider.

You probably get the idea, the Landyachtz Chief is one of my favorite longboards and my go-to machine for cruising and carving around comfortably along the beach. It’s super comfortable due to its relaxed concave and mellow rocker, and extremely nimble and steerable. Paired with its big soft Hawgs wheels, it can roll endlessly over all sorts of terrain.

The Grizzly trucks and the awesome bamboo flex also make it a carving champion and a surprisingly good pumper for a pintail. Plus, I just love the design and colors of my Bamboo Fish.

Landyachtz Longboards – Big Dipper Sun Logo – Complete Cruiser Pintail

The Big Dipper is like a magic carpet with wheels. Coming in at 42.2” long and boasting a healthy amount of flex, this is a longboard in the classic sense of the word. Because of its length, the Big Dipper is very forgiving to ride, whether you are a beginner learning to skate or someone trying to push the limits of what a flexy longboard can do. This beast is the perfect choice for anyone looking for a smooth & stable ride with lots of flow and surf style.

Description

The Big Dipper is a flexy longboard shape measuring in at 42.2” long by 9.48” wide with a wheelbase of 29.8”. It’s made from a 7 ply Maple construction that gives it a responsive, positive flex that returns lots of energy in carves, without feeling soggy and dead. The flex dampens a lot of vibration and combined with the length, it doesn’t notice rough pavement at all. It’s like a freight train, it just won’t stop. We’ve kept the rocker and concave that we love from the Dipper and extended the wheelbase so that it’s nice and stable. 155mm Grizzlies pair perfectly with the longer wheelbase and added width for tight turns and amazing carves. The 63mm Doozies are mega wide and do a great job at sliding when you want them to while simultaneously holding their line when you need grip.

Landyachtz Bamboo Pinner 44 Review: Easygoing Fun

Landyachtz Bamboo Pinner 44 longboard. Human for scale

In many ways, that’s how Landyachtz’s Bamboo Pinner is fun. A laid-back, relaxing kind of fun. But it’s not the only way to enjoy this 44-inch longboard. This is a longboard that defies traditional fun on longboards, while still being excellent at it. A boardwalk cruiser, a dancer, and a surprisingly good slider. This is the Landyachtz Bamboo Pinner 44.

I got this longboard because there was just something about watching a flexible pintail carving down a hill or along a boardwalk. They’re just so easygoing. A smooth, elevated ride, plenty of flexibility, and tons of foot space. I usually go for shorter longboards, less than or around 38-inch. Yet there was just something so attractive about that giant board. It just looked like something unlike anything I had, and something that would ride unlike anything I have.

And I was right.

It’s a huge platform, one that encourages quite a bit of foot movement. I’ve even considered learning a few dance moves. Every turn is smooth, and there’s so much space for your feet, I could see moving all around this board without problem.

Bamboo Pinner from the side

Basically? When I want to ride for relaxation, or go on a nice long cruise on level or slightly downhill land, this is the board I’ll reach for.

44 Inches of Sliding

Another angle on the Landyachtz Bamboo Pinner 44

So I increased speed, and I tested this in other places at other times. It’s surprisingly a lot of fun to go quick on this, in the 10-25mph range. Crouch down a little, make sure your back foot is overhanging on both sides of the back a little (or one side if you have small feet or a narrow stance), and start carving. I found I could do toe slides with this more confidently than I can on many of my other boards because I feel like I can grip both the heel side and toe side of the board at once, without moving my foot. It’s that narrow pintail shape, I feel like I’m gripping the board almost like a monkey. The feeling is playful, almost silly, but there you are, sliding a giant longboard as easy, if not easier, than some of your more technical, stiffer, and more concave boards.

Bamboo Pinner front view, showing mostly flat and super subtle concave

That is one thing I’ll mention. Start going too fast, and you realize that the deck is mostly flat. It’s got a super subtle ‘W’ concave for grip, but it’s not much. Combine that with the springiness of the long bamboo platform, and it can feel a little unstable at speed. Almost like you’re floating over it. Can you go fast on this board? Yes, with the right truck setup. Should you? That depends on how safe you feel flying down a hill, sometimes quite literally. It’s so easy to completely de-weight on this board.

Basically? They’re so much fun to ride.

Classic Style

Closeup of the graphic on the Landyachtz Bamboo Pinner 44

Photos of this board have been some of my most popular on social media too. It just oozes cool. Like the smooth beach vibes of a surfer or reminiscent of more easygoing skateboarding times in the 70’s and 80’s, when people would, you know, do handstands on skateboards. This would look at home on a boardwalk or next to a surfboard. It’s a timeless design, a classic, understated style, and it’s a real head turner for that.

Honestly, and I love New York, but this is the anti-NYC board. Sure, I can still get places very quickly on it, but it invites you to slow down and surf the asphalt a little. Carve for fun, not just to slide or cut speed. This is a surfboard for the land, and this style brings with it that west coast attitude. Find some sun, find some smooth asphalt, and do some cross steps and nose manuals or just carve the land waves. Just chill.

Trucks and Wheels

Bear 852 Trucks by Landyachtz

Bear 852 Trucks

With the 5th generation Bear truck, Landyachtz took some criticism to heart. They loosened up the bushing seat and strengthened the trucks. They didn’t take their criticism far enough. They really didn’t loosen up the bushing seat much at all. It still grips far too tightly on the bushing, holding it in place on the hanger. Plus, there’s no boardside washer, so the bushing can deform around the baseplate slightly, giving you an inconsistent turning feel.

Bear trucks can also do something else, something Landyachtz doesn’t have on their site anymore, but longtime Bear fans know: the hangar is reversible. Not all are. Some trucks face one way, and that’s it. Flipping them causes the angle of the trucks to change, because of the way they have the busing seat set up, so it’s resting on only one part of the bushing. Others have zero rake, that is, the axle is perfectly in line with the angle of rotation and pivot point, so rotating them would do nothing.

landyachtz pintail

To be honest, skating them flipped on the Pinner would be a waste. The fact that this giant board is so nimble, and actually becomes more nimble when carving hard due to the flexibility of the deck changing the mounting angle of the trucks, is a huge part of the joy of this board. It’s big, flexible, and has responsive rake that just make cruising around town a blast. Do some low speed slides and fast carving with it, and you’ll see why I decided to keep those trucks in their stock position.

Honestly? I wouldn’t buy these on their own. They’re not nimble or precise. Lean in and the truck will struggle to give, then give a lot, then spring you back in to place. It’s just too restrictive of a bushing seat. This board shows the one place these trucks should be: on slower cruisers. Here you don’t mind long, snappy carves as much. If I was building this from parts, I would include Paris V3 trucks on here, not these Bears. Unfortunately, I could only get this deck as a complete.

Fortunately, the wheels aren’t as insufferable as the trucks.

Fatty Hawgs XL

Landyachtz Fatty Hawgs XL

But you see where I’m going with this, right? Round lip profile, even surface, soft stoneground texture, and offset wheels? Yup, they’re pretty easy to slide. They slide easily on this springy, responsive deck, that makes changing your weight distribution a snap. Hawgs can make a decent wheel. I really enjoy the Fatty series. They’re wide, and can grip if you need them to, but push them out as you carve, and you get these nice smooth slides. They grip more than something like the Orangatang Morongas or Sector9 Butterballs, but still have a nice, predictable slide that only gets a little caught up at the end. Plus, they’re cheap! You can grab a set for $37 .

Dinghy and Bamboo Pinner

I like them so much that I actually took them off and put them on my Landyachtz Drop Cat for the Broadway Bomb this year, an ~8 mile “race” from Harlem to the Financial District in NYC. I figured they’d reliably cut speed when I need to, roll over bumps and cracks in NYC’s sloppy roads, and give me a lot of confidence. I was right, I had a great time.

Space Balls!

You know, I liked Spaceballs. It was a fun parody of a movie franchise I love. What I don’t like? Landyachtz Space Balls bearings. They’re certainly not the worst bearings in the world. They’re ABEC 7 rated, so they’re more consistent than some “stock” bearings, and their shields are removable for cleaning and lube, but they’re nothing to write home about. I intend to replace them with some Bones Reds, as they’re good for this kind of lower speed cruiser, but I’ll likely skate them a bit longer. They’re really not the worst things in the world, and it’s not as though I’m frequently skating long distances or bombing hills with this board. But this is something I noticed with my Dinghy, and it’s part of the reason I decided to make my own Drop Cat from other vendors. I knew I’d be replacing the bearings eventually, so why not now?

Basically? Landyachtz has some passable bearings. They have extended races, so you won’t need to worry about spacers. But they’re still an imperfect bearing. They get better after you break them in a bit, but never have the same ease of getting started or speed down a hill as Bones or Zealous.

Distances and Trains

Bamboo Pinner 44

This is, unfortunately, the biggest drawback to this longboard. And it’s not even all its fault. First, a little bit on the board. It sits tall. That means, when pushing long distances or uphill, you’re going to get tired quicker. You’ll be bending your front leg more. Combined with the Spaceball bearings, you could wear yourself out quickly. On level ground, with good bearings, you can push this board gently for miles. I’ve done that, and it’s great. But introduce some uphill and frequent pushing, and you’ll start to feel it.

Pantheon Ember can slide under the Bamboo Pinner from Landyachtz

Now the second part I don’t blame entirely on this board, but it is something to consider. This held me back from testing the Pinner every day, and mostly taking it out on the weekends. If you live in NYC, you may have already thought, “How do I get such a large board on the train?” The truth is, it’ll fit, but it’s more awkward. The board comes up higher, and you’ll take up more space. Since our governor, Andrew Cuomo and mayor, Bill de Blasio, see no problem with the trains running every 15 minutes and being in a constant state of “packed to the doors” and “hot as hell,” it might be a little uncomfortable to ride with this. You might get some dirty looks for taking up more space, or you just might not have room because of that huge skateboard. You won’t be anywhere near as bad as the cyclists, moped riders, or even the folks with a giant backpack who come on the train, but you might have issues.

Top and side views of Landyachtz Bamboo Pinner 44

It also depends on how tall you are. If you are barely taller than this longboard, it’s going to be extremely awkward to carry around. It’s going to come up to your shoulders if you’re 5-feet tall. Taking that through turnstiles and up stairs is not going to be easy, let alone trying to balance on a train where you can’t reach a single handhold because it’s too packed and they’re on the roof.

Finally, putting it in a car or other means of conveyance won’t be easy either. But if you have a car, you can put seats down, lay it horizontally, mount it to the roof, or treat it like you would skis, snowboards, or surfboards. Frankly, this is a solved problem, but you won’t be able to fit it in your car like your 38-inch or under boards as easily.

Landyachtz Pinner 44, closeup of the bottom

The easygoing Landyachtz Pinner 44 is a wonderful board. It’s flexible, playful, beautiful, and fun. I love my sidewalk surfboard, and I’m glad that I decided to take a chance on it.

Where to Buy

Now for the bad news. A while back I got an email from Landyachtz. The board I was waiting on to come back in stock, the Bamboo Pinner, was discontinued. I tried my local skate shop, but they never got one in. I couldn’t find one in the city. Well… that’s not  true. There was one shop that still had it. So, after work, I went to Zumiez to check it out.

It was raining, and I was on my rain deck , so I had no way to bring it home. Instead, I ordered it and had it shipped to my house. If you love the way this longboard sounds, especially the springy bamboo that’s used, you can still get it at Zumiez, but stock is running out fast. Zumiez also carries a 7-ply maple version of this graphic with a blue colored paint that gives off some beach vibes. That’s also still on sale while supplies last. In fact, it’s just $149 as of this writing . At that price, it’s an impulse buy you won’t regret.

Landyachtz Pinner Night Moves

However, if you don’t need bamboo and you trust Canadian maple to provide a nice springiness as well (and why wouldn’t you?), then you can also look for the pintail that replaced the Bamboo Handstand Pinner. The Landyachtz Pinner Night Moves is a new pintail from Landyachtz that features a psychedelic graphic and 100% maple construction. It’s still springy, like the Bamboo Pinner it replaces, using 7-ply maple to give it that flexibility. I absolutely love the graphic, but wanted to try a bamboo board and love the simple graphic on the Handstand Pinner as well.

Landyachts Bamboo Pinner 44 Handstand

Whichever model you go for, you’re going to have a lot of fun on this board. The Landyachtz Pinner is mellow, springy, and surfy. It’s perfect for beach vibes, relaxed skating, dancing, and the occasional huge carvy slides. It’s a lot of fun at speed and at a more pedestrian pace. Definitely consider picking one up and giving it a chance!

Landyachtz Longboard Review 2016

LandYachtz_product_review_2016

For almost 20 years, the Landyacthz crew has been producing quality boards at a killer price and the 2016 season is no different. With new graphics and updated tech, the line is the best it has been. The staples in the line like the Switchblade and Dinghy are back, and as usual, all the graphics are looking amazing. Without further ado, here is a list of our favorite Landyachtz Longboards for the summer 2016 season.

Bamboo Pinner Longboard

Landyachtz Bamboo Pinner at Windward Boardshop

Super grippy Hawgs street wheels offer the smoothest ride and the clear grip will help this board keep looking it’s best for years to come. A classic shape with some seriously updated tech, the Landyachtz Bamboo Pinner is here to help you conquer summer.

Fiberglass Malahat Longboard

Landyacthz Fiberglass Malahat at Windward Boardshop

Landyachtz took a classic pintail and then made it cool. The Fiberglass Malahat Longboard has a unique shape and lightweight construction making this little cruiser one of our faves. With an exaggerated concave and and beefy build, the Malahat is surprisingly stable and no stranger to a little downhill fun. Equipped with extremely grippy street wheels, the Malahat is also ideal for city commuting and can definitely handle her fair share of crappy streets and uneven sidewalks. The functional kick tails makes quick turns or popping your board up super easy while the thicker construction offers a ton of stability, even for larger riders. If you’ve always loved the look of a pintail but want a little more functionality, the Landyacthz Malahat may just be the perfect board for you.

  • Wide body and thick construction offers a ton of stability
  • Kicktail for easy maneuvering
  • Top mount means the board rides a little high

Fiberglass Mummy Longboard

Landyachtz Fiberglass Mummy at Windward Boardshop

One of the shortest boards in the Freedom Series that is surprisingly good at carving is the Fiberglass Mummy Longboard . With a unique, updated pintail shape and 2 layers of fiberglass, the Mummy is snappy, responsive and perfect for commuting to class or quick liquor store runs. It’s a top mount but the deck drops down slightly so the height is perfect and the nose kicks up just slightly which is nice for support on a wider stance or to get a little freestyle action going. If you are into faster carves, you will enjoy the concaved deck which helps to keep your feet locked into place and add a little extra stability. A bright, colorful graphic and tie dye wheels put the icing on the cake. If you’ve been searching for a fun summer cruiser, you can officially stop looking, the Fiberglass Mummy is just what you need.

  • Modified pintail shape
  • Slight concave in the deck for added support
  • Super grippy street wheels add stability
  • Pintail shape narrows out at the tail, bigger footed riders may not like this
  • Fiberglass offers some flex so not ideal for downhill

Flex Ratings

We’ve categorized the stiffness of our boards into 3 main groups, listed below.  The general rule is the faster you’re skating, the stiffer the deck, but this is not universal.

Flexy – Soft and supple flex profile best suited for carving and cruising on longer boards. The bouncy nature of these decks lets you turn deeper and surf your surrounds.

Medium – The do it all of our boards, a perfect balance of stability and carve.

Stiff – From cruisers to downhill boards a stiff flex profile excels in stability and responsiveness.  Whether you’re dipping into driveways or bombing a mountain pass you’ll be down with the stiffness.

Mikhail Lomonosov

Born: Denisovka, Archangelsk Province - 19 November 1711 Died: St. Petersburg - 15 April 1765

Mikhail Lomonosov was the great polymath of the Russian Enlightenment. Born in the deepest provinces of Northern Russia, he managed to gain a first-class education through a combination of natural intelligence and sheer force of will, and went on to make significant advances in several fields of science, as well as writing one of the first Russian grammars, several volumes of history, and a great quantity of poetry. In short, he was instrumental in pulling Russia further into the modern world, and in helping to make St. Petersburg a centre of learning as great as almost any in Europe.

Lomonosov was born in the village of Denisovka (now Lomonosovo), a village about 100 kilometers south-east of Arkhangelsk on the Severnaya Dvina river. His father was a peasant fisherman who had grown rich transporting goods from Arkhangelsk to settlements in the far north. His mother, the daughter of a deacon, died when he was very young, but not before she had taught him to read. From the age of ten, he accompanied his father on voyages to learn the business.

In 1730, however, determined to study, he ran away from home and walked over 1 000 kilometers to Moscow. Claiming to be the son of a provincial priest, he was able to enroll in the Slavic Greek Latin Academy, where he studied for five years before being sent on to St. Petersburg's Academic University. The following year (1736), he was a select group of outstanding students sponsored by the Academy of Sciences to study mathematics, chemistry, physics, philosophy and metallurgy in Western Europe. Lomonosov spent three years at the University of Marburg as a personal student of the philosopher Christian Wolff, then a year studying mining and metallurgy in Saxony, and a further year travelling in Germany and the Low Countries. While in Marburg, he fell in love with and married his landlady's daughter, Elizabeth Christine Zilch.

Due to lack of funds to support his young family, Lomonosov returned to St. Petersburg at the end of 1741, and was immediately appointed adjunct to the physics class at the Academy of Sciences. In 1745 he became the Academy's first Russian-born Professor of Chemistry, and in 1748 the first chemical research laboratory in Russia was built for him.

Throughout his career at the Academy, Lomonosov was a passionate advocate for making education in Russia more accessible to the lower ranks of Russian society. He campaigned to give public lectures in Russian and for the translation into Russian of more scientific texts. In this, he found himself in conflict with one of the founders of the Academy, the German ethnologist Gerhard Friedrich Miller (whose views on the importance of Scandinavians and Germans in Russian history Lomonosov also hotly disputed). By composing and presenting at an official Assembly of the Academy in 1749 his ode to the Empress Elizaveta Petrovna, Lomonosov gained considerable favour at court and a powerful ally in his pedagogical endeavours in the form of Elizaveta's lover, Count Ivan Shuvalov. Together, Lomonosov and Shuvalov founded Moscow University in 1755. It was also thanks to Shuvalov's influence that the Empress granted Lomonosov a manor and four surrounding villages at Ust-Ruditsa, where he was able to implement his plan to open a mosaic and glass factory, the first outside Italy to produce stained glass mosaics.

By 1758, Lomonosov's responsibilities included overseeing the Academy's Geography Department, Historical Assembly, University and Gymnasium, the latter of which he again insisted on making open to lowborn Russians. In 1760, he was appointed a foreign member of the Swedish Royal Academy of Sciences, and in 1764 he was similarly honoured by the Academy of Sciences of the Institute of Bologna. The same year, he was granted by Elizaveta Petrovna the rank of Secretary of State. He died 4 April 1765, and was buried in the Lazarev Cemetery of St. Petersburg's Alexander Nevsky Monastery.

Much of Lomonosov's work was unknown outside Russia until many years after his death, and even now it is more the extraordinary breadth of his inquiry and understanding, rather than any specific grand advancements in a particular field, that make him such a seminal figure in Russian science. Among the highlights of his academic career were his discovery of an atmosphere around Venus, his assertion of the Law of Conservation of Mass (nearly two decades before Antoine Lavoisier), and his development of a prototype of the Herschelian telescope. In 1764, he arranged the expedition along the northern coast of Siberia that discovered the Northeast Passage between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. His works also contained intuitions of the wave theory of light and the theory of continental drift. He made improvements to navigational instruments and demonstrated the organic origin of soil, peat, coal, petroleum and amber. Without knowledge of Da Vinci's work, he developed a working prototype of a helicopter.

He wrote the first guide to rhetoric in the Russian language, and his Russian Grammar was among the first to codify the language. His Ancient Russian History compared the development of Russia to the development of the Roman Empire, a theme that would become increasingly popular in the 19th century. His poetry was much praised during his lifetime, although it has been largely ignored by posterity.

Lomonosov is remembered in central St. Petersburg in the names of Ulitsa Lomonosova ("Lomonosov Street"), Ploshchad Lomonosova ("Lomonosov Square") and the adjacent bridge across the Fontanka River. During the Soviet Period, his name was given to the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory, and hence to the nearby metro station, Lomonosovskaya. The Soviets also renamed the suburban town of Oranienburg as Lomonosovo. In 1986, a magnificent monument to Lomonosov was unveiled in front of the Twelve Colleges, the main campus of St. Petersburg State University, acknowledging the enormous debt that institution owes the great polymath who is rightfully considered the father of Russian science.
