Finn Wolfhard Talks the 'Cool Factor' of Fragrance as He Partners with YSL Beauty's MYSLF Scent (Exclusive)

The ‘Stranger Things’ actor opens up to PEOPLE about his new beauty gig, redefining masculinity and the things in life that make him feel like his most authentic self

Most fans know Finn Wolfhard for his breakout role in Netflix's hit sci-fi series Stranger Things, which he landed when he was only 12 years old . He's also crossed over to the box office starring in films like It, Ghostbusters: Afterlife with Bill Murray and When You Finish Saving the World alongside Julianne Moore .

Now Wolfhard is branching out into the beauty space and expanding his creative portfolio once again as one of the new "voices" behind YSL Beauty’s men's fragrance MYSLF , which comes four years after he was named the face of Saint Laurent in 2019.

The actor, producer and director, now 20, tells PEOPLE exclusively that he feels "honored" to be a part of a project of this caliber.

"I feel very lucky to be a part of this campaign,” he tells PEOPLE from Paris, ahead of an event with the French label celebrating the new launch.

Wolfhard says he's learned to love — and appreciate — fragrance as he's gotten older.

“Growing up, obviously when you're just a guy in high school, there's not really much fragrance going on. There's a lot of AXE body spray,” he remembers of his younger years.

He's now a self-described “subtle wearer” who associates fragrance with his mood and is fond of the age-old less-is-more approach. (Wolfhard later admits that he “weirdly” doesn’t do much when it comes to the rest of his beauty routine but learned some valuable haircare lessons after a bad bleaching incident.)

“What's so great about YSL and the fragrance is that it is breaking that [masculine] mold a little bit. I feel like I’m doing something artistic,” he explains of wearing MYSLF, which is rich with notes of bergamot and an orange blossom.

It says it's also the brand's elegance and simplicity that he identifies with.

“When someone has a subtle fragrance on, it makes me feel almost comfortable, and I think there’s an overall cool factor when someone's wearing a good smell," he adds.

While he's yet to use fragrance as a way to tap into his characters, he says scent definitely transports him to nostalgic moments in his own life.

"If I smell a fragrance or something, it reminds me of a certain time or a certain family member or friend.” 

Like his take on scents, Wolfhard’s personal style has evolved and that's all thanks to Saint Laurent.

He admits that before his first fashion campaign was released he "didn’t really know anything about designer clothes.”

At the time he was 16 and discovering his own personal style. “I think after I did that campaign," he says. "I was like, ‘Oh, okay, I know that I like black pinstripe suits now.’ After that shoot, I was definitely more aware of the history behind the brand and I think it helped me with style.”

The MYSLF campaign — which also stars Lil Yachty, Noah Beck, Hunter Doohan and Steve Lacy (who join original MYSLF frontman and YSL Beauty global ambassador Austin Butler ) — is also centered around empowering others to connect with their most authentic selves and redefining masculinity.

Even with his acting prowess, Wolfhard says that being in front of the lens for a fashion or beauty campaign is out of his comfort zone.

“I think they’re a little vulnerable. It takes me a bit to warm up," he admits. "It's all about shedding your insecurities, being comfortable in your own skin and breaking down the barriers of whatever you think is masculine and [embracing] your own idea of being free on camera.” 

There are two things in particular that make Wolfhard feel like his most authentic self — and it's even better when he can do them both at the same time.

“I feel a lot like myself when I'm around my friends or if I'm directing or producing. A good example is when I was making that film [teen-horror Hell of a Summer which he co-directed and co-wrote with his close friend Billy Bryk]. I probably felt the most myself I've ever felt because I was very comfortable having that leadership role and in my element."

New York Fashion Week isn’t all about the ladies , as plenty of gents with style attended the Yves Saint Laurent Men’s Beauty event Thursday night (Sept. 6), one of several events setting off the week of style.

Lil Nas X was in attendance, as the “Industry Baby” artist  joined forces with YSL Beauty in August 2022 as the brand’s first rapper spokesperson due to him “challenging societal conventions, embracing fearless self-expression, and inspiring the future generation with his edgy approach to identity,” according to Laetitia Raoust, YSL Beauté’s U.S. General Manager.

“Since the beginning of last year ,  my partnership with YSL Beauté has been about pushing the beauty boundaries and embracing individuality,” X said about the partnership this June. “With this new campaign, we’re exploring my many faces & personalities through five different makeup looks that gave me the chance to experiment with my makeup in a more artistic way. I hope we can inspire the future generation to do the same.”

Fellow rapper Lil Yachty was also in attendance and performed, which should come as no surprise to fans of the artist whose song, “SaintLaurentYSL” is dedicated to the high fashion brand.

YSL Beauty headlines five celebrity faces of “modern masculinity” fragrance campaign for Myslf

02 Oct 2023 --- YSL Beauty US has introduced five celebrities – Finn Wolfhard, Lil Yachty, Hunter Doohan, Steve Lacy and Noah Beck – to “express the different facet” of its refillable fragrance Myslf. The launch is marketed toward expressions of individuality and modern masculinity.

“We are thrilled to enhance our connection to today’s American Gen Z audience with five insightful voices. With Finn, Lil Yachty, Hunter, Steve, and Noah, we celebrate those who are boldly themselves. Dynamic, talented and unapologetic, it’s an honor to work with them to explore all new masculinity facets,” comments Emilie Poisson, general manager at YSL Beauty US.

“Starring within, the new US voices each express a different facet of masculinity, foregoing the stereotypical, masculine personas for more nuanced, self-aware expressions,” states the brand.

“Each testimony explores the diverse tapestry of experiences and forges connections between this fragrance and cultural realms. Each voice heroes a different Myslf expression, bridging aspiration with relatability as they share themselves on camera.”

Fragrance developments In other celebrity fragrance activities, David and Victoria Beckham have each introduced new fragrance collections under each of their personal brands, channeling nostalgia from their lived experiences.

In August, singer and actress Sabrina Carpenter has released her newest fragrance within her Sweet Tooth line in partnership with Scent Beauty. The launch is branded Sweet Tooth: Caramel Dream. In the same month, clean beauty brand Florence by Mills, created by Stranger Things actress Milly Bobby Brown, entered the fragrance industry with its first-ever perfume, Wildly Me .

After nearly a decade since her first fragrance, Ari, Ariana Grande unveiled her latest perfume, Cloud Pink , in collaboration with perfumers at the Firmenich fragrance house. Debuting on the Ulta platform, the product is described as “ethereal and modern,” and is “inspired by Ariana’s magnetic optimism and confidence.”

YSL Beauty ‘MYSLF’ Voices Hunter Doohan & Steve Lacy Chat About All Things Scent

The ‘Wednesday’ actor and the Grammy-winning musician chat with VMAN about their connectivity with fragrance

Back in the fall season of 2023, YSL Beauty debuted their latest campaign for the house’s newest men’s fragrance, MYSLF. Starring some of Gen Z’s latest leading men, including Finn Wolfhard, Lil Yachty, Hunter Doohan, Steve Lacy and Noah Beck, the new voices of the MYSLF franchise helped embody the mark of a new era of masculinity for the beauty titan.

Below, VMAN caught up with the Hunter and Steve to chat about what it felt like being tapped as the faces for the fragrance, how they would describe the scent, and how they remain unapologetically themselves.

VMAN: Since being tapped as one of the voices for MYSLF, how has your experience been working with YSL Beauty as a whole so far? What were some of your thoughts when the ask first came through?

Steve Lacy: It’s been great, they have been themselves and have let me be myself throughout which has been amazing. 

Hunter Doohan: Working with YSL Beauty has been so great. Saying yes to a brand I genuinely love was so easy and I’ve loved how collaborative the experience has been. They’ve really encouraged me to stay true to my authentic self in every part of the campaign.

VMAN: With fragrance being part of so many people’s beauty routines, could you tell us what are some of your five must-haves in your beauty cabinet? 

HD: If my everyday routine gets too complicated, I simply won’t do it (*laughs*) so I like to keep it simple: Cleanser, moisturizer, SPF, hair product, and a spritz of MYSLF, of course. 

VMAN: How would you describe the scent in 3 words?

SL: Fresh, fun, versatile.

VMAN: If “MYSLF”  by YSL Beauty was a Steve Lacy track, which one would it be?

SL: All art is its own thing.

VMAN: What are some of your earliest memories with scent/fragrance that you can remember? 

HD: Just coming out of the holiday season, the first thing to come to mind is the scent of cooking and baking in my mom’s kitchen growing up around Christmas while she made my brother and I’s favorites. 

VMAN: What are some ways that you stay unapologetically yourself through your art and everyday life? 

HD: In everyday life, it’s something I try not to overthink. Just surround myself with my close friends who I can relax around and not have to be in my head. In art, it sounds weird but I’ve always felt like I can express myself the best while I’m playing other characters. I can use my real emotions and opinions to fill in the gaps for the character while hiding behind imaginary circumstances. 

VMAN: With scent being attached to memories and moments in life, have you already started to splash on some MYSLF in your day-to-day as you go about life while making new memories? 

HD: Yes, I’ve been using MYSLF in my day-to-day life and the past few months have brought along so many fun opportunities that I’m sure I’ll have a sense of memory attached to MYSLF for years to come. Memories like traveling to Paris for the launch party, attending the Netflix and Emmy’s after-party and getting to reconnect with my Wednesday family, celebrating my birthday this past weekend. Looking forward to continuing to create new memories this year! 

VMAN: The fragrance’s tagline is “MYSLF, NO MATTER WHAT”. What are some ways that you stay unapologetically yourself through your art and everyday life?

SL: I think it is important in everything I do. Music, fashion, relationships, I’m always going to stay true to myself.

In the wee hours of Thursday morning, YSL Beauty rang in Paris Fashion Week with a party at the heart of the French capital celebrating their newest fragrance MYSLF and its campaign starring acclaimed actor Austin Butler . Stars from the movie, music, and fashion worlds descended on an old fire station turned outdoor venue and basement nightclub to snap pictures, regale with peers, and usher in the L’Oréal brand’s first woody floral scent .

Butler, whose photos for the new campaign can be found on billboards from downtown New York to Charles-de-Gaulle airport, says he was eager to team up with French director Julia Ducourneau and cinematographer Benoit Debie for the YSL Beauty campaign . Butler has been on an incredible run before the SAG-AFTRA strike commenced, picking up a Golden Globe for his portrayal of The King in Elvis as well as gearing up to play bad dude Feyd-Rautha in Dune : Part Two .

The evening doubled as a celebration for the five new stars that have joined the MYSLF campaign: Lil Yachty (who performed at the brand’s New York Fashion Week activation), Steve Lacy, Stranger Things ’ Finn Wolfhard, Wednesday ’s Hunter Doohan, and TikTok star Noah Beck. At the event, as electronic remixes of Cardi B spun by Honey Dijon filled the air, Lacy mingled with friends, fellow musicians, and music executives alike.

A couple hours before the party, Rolling Stone caught up with the Oscar-nominee in his hotel room at Ritz Paris to talk about what’s on his rotation, his style influences, and sitting next to Rosé of Blackpink at the Saint Laurent show.

So that hasn’t gotten old yet? Seeing your face in whatever terminal? I don’t know if you ever get used to it. I got a call from my team that they were very excited and they knew I had been a fan of YSL for many years and so they brought the idea forward and then I talked to the team and we just all clicked. It was very organic and very exciting.

What kind of smells would you say you gravitate towards? So many. I feel like I have a very sensitive nose but I like the smell of wet asphalt, wet concrete. Like after the rain. I love the smell of pages of books. Fireplace.

We’re here at Paris Fashion Week, how would you put your own personal style into words? I’m drawn to people like Paul Newman, and Steve McQueen, and Marlon Brando, and that quality where you can see an image of somebody and it’s timeless. I don’t tend to follow trends as much, I go for simplicity a lot of the time. Just really good pieces. For me, it’s so much about fabric and a particular cut and the silhouette that a trouser gives. I’m just drawn to that.

There’s great images when Brando was doing [ A Streetcar Named Desire ], even when he was doing the play, and you just see him in rehearsals, and he’s just wearing a white T-shirt and trousers and the fit is just perfect on him.

Are there fabrics you’re drawn to more than others? I love soft fabrics. That’s why often with T-shirts it’s hard for me because some T-shirts don’t have that softness so I’ll go for a vintage T-shirt a lot of the time because they’re worn in. I just want to be comfortable.

What Paris Fashion Week moments stand out to you? I mean, the first thing that comes to mind was last night. I had never been to a YSL show before, and that location was incredible. You had the moon coming up on one side and the Eiffel Tower on the other, it was magic.

I saw you were sitting next to Rosé of Blackpink . Yeah, she’s awesome. I had heard about her a lot through Baz [Luhrmann] because they’re quite close and we have some mutual friends so we had a good time together.

Is it like a mindset thing? So much of it is selfish. It’s for you. It’s what makes you feel good. In the same way you would buy a certain type of sheet that makes you feel very comfortable that you’re sleeping in, you might want to be surrounded by a certain scent . That’s one of the things about Baz that I love so much. He creates romance in every aspect of his life. There’s not a delineation between art and life. You’re kind of bringing that essence into every aspect of your life. It might not be for some people but for me, I love to surround myself with delicious scents. I love room sprays even. Or having candles, I have candles going all the time.

Let’s say there’s someone who’s looking for a new go-to cologne . What kind of journey should they go on? I think you just have to go explore as many as possible and see what sticks out to you. That’s one of the beautiful things about fragrances , it’s like clothing. It’s what makes you feel comfortable with what you want to be surrounded by as you go through your day and your evening. It’s that sort of ethereal thing that nobody can see but it’s part of your essence at that point. I think everybody has different tastes and you have to go exploring.

Wardrobe essentials for you — do you have any staple pieces you go back to time and time again? Boots. I’ve got a few boots that are my go-tos. There’s certain hats that I just feel very comfortable in that I wear a lot. I mean, this [leather] jacket that I’m wearing right now is one that I wear a lot. I have more than I wear. I have certain jackets that are my favorites that, I’ll reach for another jacket and then I go, no, I’m going to go with the old true.

Want to Know What Charles Melton Smells Like?

Charles Melton has a musky scent to him. At least, that’s what he tells me over Zoom while on break from shooting his campaign for YSL Beauty. “I don’t know if that has something to do with me being an athlete, or just, like, my natural pheromones,” he says. Today the actor officially becomes a U.S. voice of MYSLF—YSL Beauty’s woody cologne with subtle floral notes—joining Austin Butler , Finn Wolfhard, Lil Yachty, Hunter Doohan, and Noah Beck as brand envoys. “There’s a muskiness and this floral scent to MYSLF that I really enjoy, and I feel naturally fits with…myself.”

Melton’s earliest scent memories, from when he was just a toddler, are a far cry from the patchouli and orange blossom notes of MYSLF. “I remember sitting on my mom’s lap in a U-Haul while my dad was going inside of the gas station to pick up some sodas and beef jerky,” he says. “I remember the scent of Lay’s chips with lime, and I remember the smell of flowers.” He wonders if there was a rose bush near the gas station, or if he was simply breathing in his mother's signature scent. “My mom likes floral oils and stuff like that,” he says. 

Fragrance, the May December actor says, is integral to his self-exploration and daily routine. “I put on moisturizer [and] a little eye cream," he says, adding that he then likes to “mist [fragrance] five times and walk through it.” The ritual eases him into the day—whether it be hyper-scheduled or unpredictable. ”It’s a pretty great way for me to start off my journey of discovery,” he says. 

That interest in discovery extends beyond Melton’s sense of self to the characters he embodies. “The sense of smell and what it makes you think is subjective, right?" he opines. "But I think, as an actor, it definitely can help inform [a character].” While Melton didn’t pick a specific cologne for Joe Yoo in May December or Reggie Mantle in Riverdale, he does acknowledge how critical scent is to unlocking a character’s psyche. 

“When you focus on the psychology of a character and get into the minutiae of why they are the way they are—what their emotional makeup is, and the complexities, and the layers of who they are—I think that informs a lot of decisions as to why they would maybe dress a certain way or smell a certain way,” he says. It’s almost scientific, how he works backwards, planting scent memories in a character’s past. “Part of the reverse engineering, the technical approach of understanding why—what lead [a character to a scent]—that’s an exciting starting point of curiosity to just explore.”

As for his own scent, Melton has long been loyal to YSL Beauty. “I’ve been wearing YSL fragrance for like the last six or seven years of my life,” he says, before abruptly stopping himself. “Actually, it’s been longer. Damn, I’m getting old!” He clarifies that he’s been a fan for over 10 years—well before Riverdale, and well before YSL Beauty came knocking at his door. “I’ve always gotten compliments on it,” he says. 

Charles Melton, saturated in cologne and good humor, can’t resist making one more pun for the road, delivered with a little giggle: “It’s not just a fragrance. It’s something that’s actually a part of my life. It’s so authentic to me—and to MYSLF.”

YSL Beauty taps 5 Gen-Z stars for Myslf men’s fragrance campaign

YSL is the latest brand to tap a collective of creatives, for its new fragrance campaign.

After announcing Austin Butler as a global ambassador in early August, the brand has tapped five more celebrities, for its latest male scent, Myslf. The five men featured in the statewide ads are “Stranger Things” actor Finn Wolfhard (24 million Instagram followers), rapper Lil Yachty (11.2 million Instagram followers), “Wednesday” actor Hunter Doohan (3.8 million Instagram followers), musician Steve Lacy (3.4 million Instagram followers) and TikTok star Noah Beck (33 million TikTok followers).

The diverse group is meant to represent different facets of masculinity, said Juliette Ferret, svp of marketing at YSL Beauty U.S. “They [have] strong personalities, with all the imperfections, or the sensitiveness, or the vulnerability to create something bigger … and inspire the next generation,” she said. And they’re meant to be a departure from more “stereotypical masculine personas” according to the press release for the campaign.

Though the men were selected in tandem and announced together, the campaign does not show them as a group. “We didn’t want to shoot them together, because what we wanted to celebrate their individuality,” Ferret said.

The campaign is about “what it means to be a man today, in the new contemporary definition of progressive, free masculinity,” and to show that there are “different ways of being,” Ferret said. The tagline for the fragrance is, “Myslf, no matter what.”

Staying on theme, the notes of the fragrance also reflect the ethos of nontraditional masculinity. Ferret described the scent as a “modern woody floral,” noting that it’s uncommon for male scents. And, “olfactively, the target consumer is Gen Z, particularly Gen-Z American consumers,” she said.

The campaign will live on YSL Beauty’s Instagram and will also be promoted on Twitch. Regarding the use of Twitch, Ferret said, “We wanted to test a new platform where we know young Gen-Z American men are gaming.” Paid posts on TikTok will make up the majority of the brand’s campaign investment. “We wanted to be where Gen Zers are,” Ferret said, calling a TikTok presence a non-negotiable, considering that Gen Z often discovers new products on the app.

According to Circana data, YSL Men’s is the No. 3 men’s fragrance brand in sales year-to-date, growing 24% year-over-year. The 100-milliliter size of the Myslf eau de parfum has been the No. 1 ranked men’s fragrance product since the second week of August.
