Arthur Beale: London Chandlery Closing after 500 Years, Victim of the Pandemic and High Rents
London’s yacht-chandler Arthur Beale will close its doors on June 24, after being in business for more than 500 years. Located on Shaftesbury Avenue, in what is now London’s West End, the store is shutting down due to high rents and the impact of the pandemic.
Originally founded by rope-maker, John Buckinghams, sometime around 1500, no one knows how old the business is exactly. In 1890, Arthur Beale joined the company as an office boy. The shop was re-named after him in the early 1900s.
In addition to providing supplies for ships and yachts, their rope was used for British expeditions to Mount Everest and Antarctica. The firm also supplied ice axes to polar explorer, Ernest Shackleton; the flagpole for Buckingham Palace and rigging for escapologists, and the window displays of Selfridges department store.
How did a chandlery end up in London’s theater district? In the 16th Century, large numbers of flax plants were grown in fields in that part of London, which were used to manufacture boat sails and rope.
“The shop started off life as a rope maker, so all the materials had to be as close as possible to where the rope was being made,” co-owner Hugh Taylor told the BBC .
“A lot of people think it’s bizarre that there’s a yacht chandler in London but 500 years ago the Thames was pretty important from a nautical perspective and all the Everest explorers would come to the shop in London for their supplies,” he added.
Although Arthur Beale will close next month, Mr. Taylor said the company will be opening a warehouse outside London and become an e-commerce business
“Our hope and aspiration is that we will be home for Christmas in a pop-up, and then one day in the future, we hope to return to London.”

I used to work just a two minute walk from this chandlers and did occasionally buy stuff. It was always a bit strange seeing other gentlemen in business suits walking out of the store carrying large fenders or coils of rope.
Our local favorite chandler is still in their location because the landlord forgot to give them required notice for intending not to renew their lease.
There are apparently still not enough coffee shops and haberdashers here in Seattle, those numbering only in the thousands to perform the difficult work of selling indistinguishable products into a saturated market, as against a tiny handful of stubbornly persistent nautical supply houses still helping to signify the difference between this city and any other. Hence the urgent need to boot out another chandler for replacement w/yet more coffee and personal drapery vendors.
That is very sad news. My father took me there more then 60 years ago to show me what a proper Yacht Chandler was. Still remember that visit as if it were yesterday.

Historic London shop Arthur Beale is closing. Here’s why that matters
The business has been operating in London for more than 500 years
Around this time last year, we ran an interview with the owners of London’s oldest businesses , reflecting on how they’d survived some of the toughest periods in the city’s history, only to be faced with a global pandemic. We spoke to cheesemongers and umbrella salesmen about how their shops had weathered floods, two world wars and global financial crashes.
One of those businesses was Arthur Beale, a West End nautical chandler that’s existed in London in different forms for so long, nobody knows exactly how old it is (it’s thought it be somewhere in the region of 520 years). At the time, Arthur Beale’s owner Alasdair Flint told us, ‘Ninety percent of our sales are through the shop, so the current crisis is having a devastating effect. But the shop was already quite old when the Great Plague of London struck. Some of the victims were buried in the church opposite. It got through that one and we plan to get through this too.’
Sadly, Arthur Beale has not made it through the most recent lockdown. On Tuesday, a Twitter thread by Londoner Dan Barker alerted us to the news that this eccentric sailing shop, which has existed in the capital for more than half a millennium, would not be reopening. In the thread, Barker followed up the news with snippets of archival research on Arthur Beale’s history, including a British Museum card from 1791 featuring the shop’s former mouthful of a name ‘John Buckingham, Hemp & Flax Dresser, Two-dealer & Rope-maker’. He also tweeted that the business provided the ropes used on early Everest expeditions by Tenzing Norgay and Eric Shipton .
Barker explains to me over the phone that he isn’t connected with Arthur Beale, he’s just a fan of the business who’s sad to see it go, ‘I go to the shop quite regularly and just love what they do,’ he says. ‘I’ve worked for a lot of retailers, so I am interested in retail generally. I think the history of what they do is super-, super-interesting. There are very few of those places left in the world.’
So how did a yacht supplier end up in the middle of London’s Theatreland? Barker says one theory is that the original location for the business around St Giles/Covent Garden was once surrounded by flax fields, flax which may have been used to make their rope . It’s details like that which make the closure of Arthur Beale’s feel like such a loss. It’s not just an eccentric shop, it was, until this month, a tangible link to pre-industrial London. Having this incongruous ancient business sat on a road beside an estate agent felt like a small sign of the city’s willingness to preserve its history. Also, we’re really going to miss its elaborate window displays, which convinced many a tourist they’d look good in a stripy pullover.

Arthur Beale confirmed news of the closure yesterday on its official Instagram account , stating that ‘ The impact of Covid-19 means the company can no longer warrant paying the rents that a Central London shop demands so we have no choice but to move on to pastures new.’ The Arthur Beale team explained that they will be having a clearance sale at the shop until June 24 and will continue to operate online at www.arthurbeale.co.uk . They signed off with: ‘There’s still some life in the old ship yet!’
In less-depressing West End news, these London theatres are reopening on May 17 … …and four – yes four – new record shops are opening in London .

Davey & Co are UK manufacturers of traditional marine fittings, made from brass, gunmetal and other traditional materials. We stock traditional boat building tools, and fastenings.
The Davey Team are passionate about British manufacturing, encompassing traditional skills and values. Wherever possible, our products are produced in the UK often using very old patterns and processes. We have a wide range of products, that have been tried and tested over the years.
