ROMA Enquiry

"People who charter a yacht tend to want as many experiences as they can in a short space of time. It’s essentially a vacation in compressed format, so the yacht needs to collaborate with you in that. You need lots of different places to eat on board, so every day offers something different. The yacht also needs to make getting ashore easy, for meals on the beach and excursions, so it feels like you never do the same thing twice." - Espen Øino

Description.

For the outdoor lovers RoMa offers a spacious sun deck complete with numerous chaise-longues, vast adjustable sun pads, and a generous pool with jets capable of creating a strong current for the ultimate workout. An al-fresco bar is situated just aft of the pool.

An air conditioned superbly equipped gym with an expansive view is just one of the amenities to enjoy on this prestigious super-yacht.

A full beam sky lounge is nestled in the same familiar soft cream tones as the salon and guest staterooms; strategically placed immense chairs and settee, a game table and desk round out this spectacular room.

An ample rectangular aft deck dining table provided for alfresco dining at its best. It can be extended to comfortably sit up to 16 guests.

The oversized main salon comprises versatile seating areas that are especially designed with entertaining or relaxing in mind. An outstanding feature on this deck are the backlit onyx bar, dining and coffee tables. The dining area is just forward of the salon and showcases the circular dining table that will comfortably seat 12 guests.

Forward on the desirable main deck, the floor-plan rises above a staircase leading to the voluminous master suite. The Master suite, being on the same deck although on a higher location warrants real intimacy for its occupants. It exudes an understated elegance and features a king size bed. Its panoramic windows allow natural light to pour into the suite filling every corner of it. The master suite’s regal bathroom is fitted with a bathtub, shower, his & hers hand wash basins and wc. An enviable dressing room complements this fabulous master suite.

One of RoMa’s most impressive features, very popular with the younger guests, is an on-board cinema, the walls of which are adorned with minuscule fiber optic lights imitating the fascinating bioluminescence of the sea.

In terms of entertainment, RoMa is unsurpassed in luxury amenities and water-toys for an unforgettable charter experience. Her fantastic outdoor spaces are equally impressive, featuring a private beach-club and an unbeatable array of toys including a brand new water-slide which towers above the sea-level all the way up to the sun deck. Even the faint-hearted find themselves lured to it! Then come the paddle boards, water skies, jet skis, the enormous anti-jelly-fish pool which also serves to sunbathe, the seabobs, snorkel gear for guests of all ages, the inflatable water toys, a Castoldi Jet tender, water-golf game with balls that turn into fish food when they enter in touch with the sea water, etc.

Unarguably, one RoMa’s most unique features is T/T RoMa a 16.9m (55’ft) Anvera chase tender which is a small yacht on her own right: her interior features a salon, bathroom with shower and a cabin with a double bed whilst her exterior features a covered exterior seating area with a table to enjoy light food prepared on board, a service station for the crew and an incredibly vast aft deck which is ideal for sunbathing, getting ready for a nice scuba diving adventure, or deciding which of the many sea-water toys to use next. T/T RoMa can reach an exhilarating speed of up to 30 knots and is a sea-limousine of sorts when bringing guests ashore.

With a licensed masseuse/beautician on board, guests can enjoy the benefits of a luxury spa at sea.

War-ravaged Chechnya shows a stunning rebirth - but at what price?

Billions of dollars in aid from Moscow have helped to rapidly rebuild Chechnya – and President Ramzan Kadyrov has been given free rein to rule with an iron hand in exchange for peace.

  • By Fred Weir Correspondent

March 21, 2012, 12:54 p.m. ET | Moscow

The part of Europe most thoroughly wrecked and ravaged by war in the past six decades, Chechnya , has undergone a stunning transformation from ruin to rebirth in the space of a few short years.

Chechnya's regeneration has been all the more remarkable for passing largely unnoticed in the West, where images remain fresh of its capital city, Grozny , as a smashed moonscape that was often compared to Stalingrad after World War II.

But today, thanks to billions of dollars in Kremlin aid, downtown Grozny now features broad avenues – including one named after Russian leader Vladimir Putin – lined with luxury boutiques and new glass-fronted skyscrapers. Many of the city's once-shattered residential neighborhoods now boast clusters of graceful high-rise apartment blocks. Grozny's airport is totally refurbished and hosts daily flights to Moscow and other Russian cities. Where mine fields and piles of rubble dominated the city's center just six years ago, the marble-lined Akhmad Haji Kadyrov mosque – reputedly the largest mosque in Europe – now towers over the landscape with its four 197-foot minarets.

But experts say that all this physical progress has come at a high price. In exchange for peace, they say, the Kremlin has turned Chechnya over to President Ramzan Kadyrov , who runs the mountainous republic of about 1.3 million people as if it were his private fiefdom.

"Chechnya is now a nearly sovereign state within the Russian state; what goes on there would be impossible in any other part of Russia ," says Sergei Arutyunov, a Caucasus expert at the official Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology in Moscow. "It's extraordinary that Kadyrov is able to be absolutely independent in his decisionmaking, while he is simultaneously completely dependent on the Kremlin for his funding. Chechnya survives thanks to vast subsidies from Moscow, yet Russian authority scarcely exists there."

Though separatist and Islamist rebels have been largely defeated and driven into a few mountain strongholds, the police state constructed by Mr. Kadyrov still holds sway. Human rights monitors say that political critics continue to disappear, though not as frequently as in the past, and no one publicly questions the growing personality cult of Kadyrov, whose bearded face gazes down from the billboards and posters that sprout almost everywhere.

Kadyrov defies Constitution

In defiance of Russia's Constitution, Kadyrov has allegedly moved to impose sharia, or Islamic, law in the tiny republic, including mandatory head scarves and dress codes for women, encouragement of polygamy, and forgiveness for so-called honor killings.

"Kadyrov has been reinforcing traditional aspects of Islamic law, including some things that violate the Russian Constitution," says Tatiana Lokshina, deputy director of Human Rights Watch 's Moscow bureau and author of a report on the creeping Islamization of the republic. "If you're a woman in Chechnya, you can't really attend school or university without keeping your head covered. No woman – not even a non-Muslim – can enter a government building without appropriate dress and a head scarf. This is in contradiction to the rights of Russian citizens."

Ms. Lokshina, a frequent visitor to Chechnya, says Kadyrov has encouraged his own officials to take a second wife – even when they don't want to – and publicly warned women that if they stray from the demands of Islamic morality, it would be understandable if they were murdered by their menfolk in an honor killing.

"None of this takes the form of written legislation," Lokshina says, "but Kadyrov openly states what he wants. The only law in Chechnya today is what Kadyrov says it is."

Chechnya has been ravaged by two wars in as many decades: 1994-96, and 1999-2009. The conflicts killed an estimated 350,000 people, created hundreds of thousands of refugees, and laid waste to the entire republic. The Kremlin finally declared victory over the separatist threat in 2009 and withdrew most Russian military forces, leaving Kadyrov in charge.

Though thousands of Chechens remain homeless, life has visibly improved for the majority. "Grozny has become a modern metropolis, with new districts, good roads, sewage systems, schools, and hospitals," says Zaurbek Gakayev, a Chechen who lives in Moscow but travels frequently to Chechnya. "Electricity and running water have been restored. This is all to the credit of the state.

"And it's not only in the capital city," he continues, "but all over the republic. The changes are colossal, and they've become really noticeable in the past couple of years."

Extreme wealth, extreme poverty

While life is still demanding for most, and male unemployment by official measures was a staggering 50 percent last year (and quite possibly higher), a few Chechens have built mansions and enjoy globe-trotting lifestyles.

Kadyrov himself reportedly maintains a private zoo, with tigers and other exotic animals, on his estate near Gudermes. He hired international stars Seal, Jean-Claude Van Damme , and Hilary Swank to perform at his birthday party last year.

"In Chechnya, we see a regime where everyone is subordinated to one man and his circle," says Svetlana Gannushkina , director of Civil Assistance, a Moscow-based charity organization that assists internal refugees. "There is extreme wealth, which allows celebrations that cost millions of dollars, along with extreme poverty for the majority.

"Basically," she says, "the Chechens have lived with fear for so long that they've internalized it. They don't even notice it anymore; being afraid has become a part of the Chechen personality."

Dear Reader,

About a year ago, I happened upon this statement about the Monitor in the Harvard Business Review – under the charming heading of “do things that don’t interest you”:

“Many things that end up” being meaningful, writes social scientist Joseph Grenny, “have come from conference workshops, articles, or online videos that began as a chore and ended with an insight. My work in Kenya, for example, was heavily influenced by a Christian Science Monitor article I had forced myself to read 10 years earlier. Sometimes, we call things ‘boring’ simply because they lie outside the box we are currently in.”

If you were to come up with a punchline to a joke about the Monitor, that would probably be it. We’re seen as being global, fair, insightful, and perhaps a bit too earnest. We’re the bran muffin of journalism.

But you know what? We change lives. And I’m going to argue that we change lives precisely because we force open that too-small box that most human beings think they live in.

The Monitor is a peculiar little publication that’s hard for the world to figure out. We’re run by a church, but we’re not only for church members and we’re not about converting people. We’re known as being fair even as the world becomes as polarized as at any time since the newspaper’s founding in 1908.

We have a mission beyond circulation, we want to bridge divides. We’re about kicking down the door of thought everywhere and saying, “You are bigger and more capable than you realize. And we can prove it.”

If you’re looking for bran muffin journalism, you can subscribe to the Monitor for $15. You’ll get the Monitor Weekly magazine, the Monitor Daily email, and unlimited access to CSMonitor.com.

Russia's wars in Chechnya offer a grim warning of what could be in Ukraine

Russian soldiers rest in Chechnya's capital, Grozny, in February 2000. Russia waged two wars against Chechnya from 1994 to 2000. In both wars, Russia heavily bombed Chechnya, flattening Grozny and causing tens of thousands of civilian deaths.

Russia unleashes a heavy bombing campaign. Cities and towns are reduced to rubble. Thousands of civilians are killed.

Russia did this twice — against fellow Russian citizens — in Chechnya in the 1990s. That raises the question of whether Russian President Vladimir Putin is using the same playbook as he wages war in Ukraine today.

In Chechnya, a tiny Muslim republic in southern Russia with just 1.5 million people, resistance to Russian rule dates back at least two centuries. Rebels there began agitating for independence after the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991.

After a couple of years of increasing tension, Russia unleashed a major invasion marked by relentless airstrikes and salvos of heavy artillery. Thousands of fighters and tens of thousands of Chechen civilians were killed. The Chechen capital, Grozny, was laid to waste.

Block after block, most every building was completely gutted. No other city had been so intensely bombed for decades. The devastation evoked those black-and-white photos of European cities pummeled in World War II.

Russian President Vladimir Putin flew into Grozny, Chechnya, in March 2000, traveling in a Su-27 fighter jet after Russia recaptured the territory.

Russia waged the campaign for two years, with its powerful military trying and repeatedly failing to crush a small band of rebels. Remarkably, Russia lost.

President Boris Yeltsin's government in 1996 signed a peace treaty with Chechnya, removed all Russian troops from the territory and granted broad autonomy to Chechnya, though not formal independence.

Putin comes to power

But three years later, as Yeltsin was about to leave office, he named an obscure spy turned politician to be his prime minister — Vladimir Putin.

Putin assumed that office on Aug. 9, 1999, and by the end of that month, Russia was waging a renewed bombing campaign against Chechen rebels in an attempt to reverse the earlier humiliation.

The second Chechen war was also brutal, though it proved more effective. Russian forces took control of the breakaway republic after just a few months.

In March 2000, a triumphant Putin, who had by this time become president, flew to Grozny in a Russian fighter jet. He emerged from the aircraft in a full pilot suit, to commemorate the victory.

Putin installed a Kremlin-friendly leader, Akhmad Kadyrov, to strengthen his hold of the territory. Kadyrov was assassinated in 2004, but his son, Ramzan Kadyrov, now rules Chechnya.

In the current battle in Ukraine, Chechen forces have been sent in to fight with the Russian military.

A Chechen man walks across a square at the Presidential Palace in Grozny in January 1996. Russia heavily bombed Chechnya during its 1994-96 war there. Russia lost that war and signed a peace treaty, agreeing to leave Chechnya and giving the territory autonomy, though not formal independence. Russia reinvaded Chechnya in 1999.

Parallels between Chechnya then and Ukraine now

Thomas de Waal , a journalist who covered Chechnya in the 1990s, said he sees many similarities between then and now.

"There are some pretty disturbing parallels," said de Waal, who's now in London with the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. "The use of heavy artillery, the indiscriminate attacking of an urban center. They bring back some pretty terrible memories for those of us who covered the Chechnya war of the 1990s."

There are political parallels as well, he said.

"There was a project to restore Chechnya to Russian control, and nowadays in 2022, to restore Ukraine to the Russian sphere of influence," said de Waal. "And there was no Plan B. Once the people started resisting, which came as a surprise in Chechnya and is coming as a surprise in Ukraine, there was no political Plan B about what to do with the resistance."

He said Putin was expecting little or no pushback, as happened when Russian troops quickly and bloodlessly seized Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula in 2014. Instead, Putin got Chechnya, 1994.

After more than two weeks of heavy fighting in Ukraine, the Russian invasion is moving far more slowly than planned.

With their superior firepower, Russian forces are closing in on Ukraine's cities. But the Ukrainians are still resisting fiercely and still hold the capital, Kyiv, and other large urban centers.

Meanwhile, the civilian toll is mounting.

"When Russia says that it is 'not waging war against civilians,' I call out the names of these murdered children first," Ukrainian first lady Olena Zelenska said in an open letter this past week. "Perhaps the most terrifying and devastating of this invasion are the child casualties."

At least 549 civilians have been killed and nearly 1,000 injured, according to the U.N. Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. The actual number could be much higher, according the office.

"Schools, hospitals, and kindergartens have been hit – with hugely devastating consequences," the U.N. body said in a statement. "Civilians are being killed and maimed in what appear to be indiscriminate attacks, with Russian forces using explosive weapons with wide area effects in or near populated areas."

U.S. intelligence officials painted a bleak picture this past week, predicting that urban fighting in the coming weeks could be even more intense.

Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines, testifying Thursday before the Senate Intelligence Committee, said, "Our analysts assess that Putin is unlikely to be deterred by setbacks and instead may escalate, essentially doubling down."
