All Roger Simpson’s designs are good all round boats, strong, seaworthy and comfortable with out being the fastest boat on the water, they certainly are not disgraced either. quite easy to sail short handed and sails reasonably well in light airs .

Add Good sea keeping abilities, comfortable interior without being a floating unit, ability to actually sail and to be reliable and safe. These boats are well known in the Southern Oceans and well respected worldwide.

Simpson catamaran designs?

I'm looking at a 10.2 meter / 34 foot catamaran that was owner-built to a design by Roger Simpson. I'm not familiar with Simpson's designs but he appears to be fairly popular in Australia. Is anyone familiar with this design or Simpson's designs in general? Any idea what their sea keeping and performance is like? Construction is strip planked cedar with Bruynzeel plywood bulkheads and cabin, then covered with epoxy and glass. Finish is pretty rough (more like a work-boat than a yacht) but otherwise seems solid. I found no voids or delaminations (but I'll leave it to a surveyor to make sure I didn't miss anything). Any info is appreciated.

In Australia Simpson designs have a reputation as solid cruising boats. Simpson got out of the design business by the early 2000s and his boats may look a little dated now for some. They don't usually have daggerboards and are usually owner built. There were some production Simpsons - Cloud 9 and Formula one cats. One of the most iconic series of images is that of the Simpson cat Ramtha in the Queens Birthday storm. She was abandoned at the height of the storm without a parachute or sea anchor and made it through. The owners got her back and cruised on herc again. They were very impressed with her. Search Google images for "Queens Birthday Storm Ramtha" and look at some incredible pics of a Simpson doing a great job in atrocious weather.

It looks like plans are still available through Boatcraft Pacific. Bigkahuna, I happen to be sitting on my Simpson 10.2 out off the old Streeters Jetty, in Broome Australia, waiting for some spares to arrive before pushing on. I left Hobart just after the S2H boats finished, around Matsyker Is , Cape leeuwin and north to Broome. I built mine back in the 90's and have done a few miles since. I love it. Its been a great sea boat for its size. Four crossings of the Great Australian Bight have given it a little test . I have a copy of the plans under the rear berth. From memory they are dated 1985, and the transom extension was dated 1992 or there abouts. From mixed fleet racing it is a fair bit quicker than the Seawind 1000. Does the one you are looking at have the transom hung rudders or the underhung spade/skeg style You may be interested to know that the PDQ 34 cats came out just after Simpsons 10.2 plans. The PDQ published specs had identical waterline hull beam and immersion rate figures. What a coincidence . Even more surprising was the transom extension got added to the PDQ , making it a 36 just after Simpson revised the 10.2 plans. I'm sure that was just another coincidence. In Aus the quality varies greatly as most were home built. My Cabin does not have the square front as drawn but more the more streamlined PDQ style. Also the original plans did not have standing headroom in the bridge deck. The turret came latter. Any questions please ask. If I can work out how to post pictures or video, I will.
A very short clip , sailing down the Channel, Bruny Island. HELP, I've tried to upload a few seconds of video, stuffed up and now can't see it, can't delete it??? Ok the best I can do is say the video is here.... Simpson 10.2 | Boat Design Net https://www.boatdesign.net/gallery/simpson-10-2.25428/

@Gwion - This 10.2 has under-hull skegs and rudders and was completed about 10 years ago. How well does yours perform under sail?
This is the boat I'm looking at: Boat for sale - Simpson 10.2 meter Custom Catamaran - 35' http://www.boatersresources.com/bfs_detail.php?adid=450874
Bigkahuna, yes mine has the transom extensions as you can see , so has the balanced spades. The early ones, sans extensions just had the transom hung rudder. I did increase the size of the rudders ( by 25%) after our first circumnavigation of Aus. They were just too small as designed for light air. We do not motor much as we only have a single 9.8 tohatsu 2 stroke. its very noisy and way underpowered. That being said it sails great. I'm from a one design race background so love to roll up for the club mixed fleet races. Sails upwind with similar sized cruiser mono's ie benes' etc, but down wind it'll clear out. Like any cat you gotta keep it light. You may be able to see from the photo that I'm running with hank on headsails. Yer I know its a little hardcore (hard work) but theres nothing like a decent headsail on a mast head rig.
@Gwion - I also come from a racing background (monohulls of all sizes). What sorts of boat speeds do you get with yours? How bad is the bridge deck pounding in waves / chop? I rather like the twin outboards on this boat. Should make docking her pretty easy.
Bigkahuna I just looked at the Advert. The aft cockpit coamings aren't built to plan. Then again as I said earlier the front of my cabin isn't iether. Its funny how we home builders can't follow instructions. The transoms don't appear cut away for any useful boarding benefit. I made up a composite forebeam which is a lot neater than what is shown there. That forward catwalk structure has got to go. To the builders credit it appears they have resisted the urge to add a second story. The hulls look like the real Mcoy. What size primary winches are they. I'm running Andeson 40's and there undersize for my 450 ft^ number 1. The boat was designed for diesel Inboards so I'm not sure about those mounts. Each builder has his own take on how to mount OB's
The bridge deck pounding is a non issue. I have a central OB nacele tortured up out of 3mm ply and glassed and its still as built all these miles and years later. You will have to take that one out in a seaway to see how those motor mounts perform. There is nothing there that a chainsaw and some epoxy won't fix. Docking with a single non steering OB is more of a controlled crash than a serious seaman like manouver . That being said going into marinas backwards with the enlarged rudders has kept us out of trouble.
@Gwion - Yes, there are several things I would change and that catwalk structure is just bizarre. It only has the two winches on the cabin top and they look to be pretty small. I don't think the boat has anything larger than a #3 / #4.
@Gwion - Sorry to nag, but what sort of boat speeds are typical for your boat?
  • Advertisement:
Sorry I missed the bit about boat speed. it is really only a 33'6'' hull so does tend to dig a hole at around eight knots. That being said our record speed is 20.7 knots on a southern ocean swell. Light and stripped makes a huge difference and the hole I speak of at 8 is no longer. If I have to plan a voyage 12 months out I'll work on 120 mile days . Anything greater, which it often is, is a bonus. Have done a couple of 100 mile sprints in daylight.

a Simpson Coud 10 shell.
My initial question is is it worth what I'm about to pay for it? He's asking $30k but so far have negotiated to $24k including left over glass matting and vacuum . It's over spec'd with 19mm foam rather than 12mm and vacuum bagged construction. The finish is extremely well done.
I should mention I'm in Qld .

make a list of everything involved and put a number to it . that will tell you if its a good deal or are you going to just end up at a of a that you could buy today make payments and at the end have years of sailing instead of building . I have been a , kitchen remodeler all my life but when it came to the time to get a boat I would buy one complete ,sail it , and sell it and buy a new one ending up with our in U S A . good luck and happy sailing or building !!! both are a lot of fun !!!

Ideally, you should be able to get to the boat in a short drive if you have a spare hour after , or run over to get a measurement from the boat if you're working something up in your garage.

Good luck if you go ahead!

. after six years it was on the . Four more years and the loan was paid off. I am still working on it and sailing although I had to replace an . £12K items spent £12K (mast, and were supplied) Value £30K. I could have bought one and spent more time sailing at the same price. But what we have now is customised to us so it was worth it. I did the work 1/2 mile away and its now six miles away in a marina.

If you want the fun of working on a design and the one you have here will take years and cost a lot, thats part of the fun. If you think its a way to get sailing it isnt, and it will delay you. I am proud of what I have done, mostly on my own but the familiy enjoy it and I said I would do it, I did despite what my friends said.

The question you need to ask yourself are you going down this path because you want the experience of building your own cat or because you want to go sailing. A quick will yield Cloud 10's advertised currently at up to 130K. So if you could launch it today completed for less than 100K it be worth a look at.

You must at the minimum have an estimated cost's for procurement of all needed to get to splash the boat, including entire 12 & 240 volt, system, engines and drive-train , furniture, (fuel, water, black water) , boom and standing and running, , (including pushpitt, pullpit and lifelines), widows and hatches, and , , chain, , winches, clutches, , etc etc etc.

Plus estimated time it will it take to get the to pay for the required to do these jobs and the time you will actually take to complete the of them.

Then you will be in a reasonable position to say if you are embarking on building your dream boat, in an acceptably timely and cost effective manner, or putting more time and into somebody else's and soon to be yours also, failed dream.

Good luck which ever way you go.

for around $100,000. You would need to get a fantastic deal on the rig and to make the project economical (Vetus engines have been offering competitive pricing). Also what about the cost of moving her twice? Once to your place and then to the marina when completed.
The one upside if you go ahead is you will be getting a for around the same price as an older Cloud 10.
I would say if you are handy with tools and have some spare time go for it. Last year I finally launched our 10 meter yacht which I built from scratch in 2 years, only working on her in my spare time.

Cheers

Any simpson cloud 9 catamaran owners out there , sa, 37 posts.

Thumbs Up

Hi have purchased a Cloud 9, in circumstances where the seller is not able to give me any introduction or a once -over on the boat. Unfortunately there is almost zero documentation as well. I have posted and joined several/many Facebook groups ( including one titled "Simpson catamaran owners" ) and have had no responses in the last 2 weeks. My insurer actually suggested this forum, so does anyone have , or know someone who has/had a Simpson Cloud 9 ?They are quite different from the associated production Cloud 12 which had centrally located engines and a prop drive. Cloud nines' all have saildrives located further aft.Any and all help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance Search " Simpson 30 " in Utube and you will see one in action :)

Blue dog, it sounds very similar to the cat a mate had a few years back. From memory had wee little diesels ( maybe 10 hp cat ? yellow ?) port n starboard, mounted in the aft section of the hulls. The mast was blue. Simba was her name

Unfortunately he's no longer with us. It was sold on to a very salty young family on the tweed

These seems to be another mystery tank on the starboard side with an inlet on the side deck with "fuel" marked on the cap, dont know if this is for the starboard water or for some independent tank that is under a screwed down access interior floor plate the the aft of the water tank access plate on that side. its all early days as a total newbie - every day is an adventure :) any chance of a photo of your cat ? I assume they added sugar scoops. I'm particularly interested in how the wc and shower have been located and finished. from what i have been able to see so far, the "voyager 36" cats are the cloud nine design (with saildrives etc) , albeit quite larger, with a head in a module in the middle of the boat. I'm not allowed to post links or photos here yet as I've just joined up- but i will as soon as i can cheers

An advert for a 10.5 here which may have some useful information. 2 small sail drives. Some advert text re the engines appears to be not valid or confused. grich62 the boat is in the Port Stevens area in NSW. Thank you so much for those photos, it gives me hope/direction to upgrade the interior of the filthy pit that the current head is. Unfortunately I still cant do photos, but I can see that you have far more headroom for the shower.I assume that the decorated porthole and sink is opposite the wc and the porthole opens to the cockpit area, in this boat there is only 5cm from the porthole's top to the "roof" - which is the port cockpit seat. However I can definitely get the surfaces for the head and shower to that stage (which looks good by the way), as they currently have grimy stick-on vinyl , and is totally open to the engine enclosure . Also really like the swim platform and sugar scoops, EDIT: Just worked out the difference, in the first photo, you have an extended area painted green aft of the port windows, in this cat that area does not exist, and the fibreglass follows the window slope down and is only about 50mm away from the window slope. So thats where your cat gets its headroom from - very good design alteration.if you get a chance would like to get some photos of that exterior form, to see if its possible to make a similar alteration . No rush, just glad you posted these photos ;)

Im giving my boat a real hard look, and I don't see how, the way it ,is that you could put the WC admidships and still have stair/hull access on both sides to the aft and forward berths. the "nav desk" would be gone totally of course.i'll measure the bulkhead to bulkhead width later today to double check. I can see how those Side "cabinets" ( for want of a better word) in the cockpit can be done, I'm fairly certain that the seat form incursion into the aft berths in my boat actually continue past and forward of the front of the engine/bed front panel, where it seems that yours finish level with that panel, that would be the start of those "cabinets" the stern sugar-scoop extensions are of course a no-brainer if you have the money and opportunity and want to upgrade the sailing speed and reduce hobby-horsing (JIMHO) If at some time in the future you could give me a measurement for the horizontal width of the inner face of the port cabinet, the side/face that has that butterfly transfer on it, near the tiller/wheel i'd be very grateful. I'll take a measurement of the horizontal seat length of the port cockpit length today and post it up to see if it is the same or longer than yours.Really like the rain gutter lip on the cockpit binimi

bulldogoz do you have the bulbus bows on your boat,as they were ment to stop hobby horsing in smooth water

yes, they are there, they are also to give a lower energy requirement/cruse at a single specific speed, by manipulating the bow wave to imitate a longer waterline, , at least that is the reason (AFAIK) for their existence on large ships , and I took photos while out of the water, but cant post them yet :( OK - I now get that WC "passageway" concept - yes not so great.

That is very interesting about the bows, then only cloud 9's I've been able to find all claim to have been built by Marinetec in Qld. Your post indicated that yours started as a home build, did any original plans come with it ? BTY I've measured the cockpit seating, they are 1.5 m long. so if yours are that without the cabinets, then there is clearly part of the 1.2m extension, along with the stern extensions.

be care full how wide you make the hard, you have to duck mine to get out the side of the cockpit

i have been studying your hard top and i think your best way to lift the top is to leave the wood there attached to the hull and make your lifting blocks out of 30 x 150 planks recessing the top to allow the top to remount

I was thinking that still being able to stand upright on the side seats and be clear of the hardtop ( and even put my arm on it for stability) would be a good idea, and your advice confirms it. wider over those seats would not be better. But I'm thinking wider at the very front with the screens, perhaps with a gentle curve rather than the 'V" may allow for increasing headroom in the bridge-deck cabin-way. That would be a design issue for a final "ultimate" cockpit hardtop.

Just to get idea how looks like real diversity of inflatables. I have sailed some, but cannot compare them with Tornado or Nacra Inter 18. Rigid boats are much more fun (IMHO) for sail but PIA to travel, if you have not trailer. And I had not.
The main reason of inflatables in ex-USSR is ease of transportation by car, train or airplane. For example, we travelled with such boat from Russia to Ukraine by train in 2012 without any problems.
As concerns to Minicat, it looks too primitive by accepted standards.

I somewhat agree with you ... but ... I think fun is a relative term. For pure high performance a Nacra would certainly be faster etc ... just as a Ferrari would ... for pure performance. But then you couldn't drive your ferrari on dirt roads or pothole roads, or speed bumps, and you can't take it shopping or camping or pull a trailer behind it.

I think having a portable inflatable boat will give you more time on the water and increase your overall enjoyment ... sure the Nacra may be a little more thrilling for the one or two sessions you can find crew etc ... but all the hassles and cost of owning, transporting and stowing a rigid boat means you sail much much less.

Before getting into inflatables there were so many times going camping trips etc or travelling that I wished I had a sailboat on hand. How many days were too windy to kayak ro SUP or swim ... or sailing under a beautoful sunset with a great partner... i hated missing all those opportunities much more than i ever enjoyed the few moments i enjoyed on a high end Cat.

So fun being a relative thing i like being able to sail anywhere ... don't get me wrong i love having those thrill rides on a high performance cat but for those I prefer doing a quick day session on a friend's boat and prefer owning a boat I can sail pretty much anywhere and any time.

The last thing is ease of sailing, safety and cost of ownership. Those other boats need alot of skills and in some cases extreme athleticism and physical prowess ... a boat like a mincat is fun for experienced sailors but very good for less experienced or less physically gifted sailors ... even for kids or seniors... because its so light and easy to maneuver and right etc... not to mention that owning a rigid boat has a higher cost of ownership to store, maintain etc... For me the more i thought about it and rationalized it the more I came to inflatables. I love living in a Condo and having a sailboat in my Den. When I get into the elevator people are always blown away when i tell them its a sailboat in a bag!

Im really hoping MinCAT comes out with a sailing foil in the future!

  1. Simpson Cloud 10-Is it worth it?

Personally, and let's understand that this is my opinion - I would say no. Mostly it is because of the design. Roger Simpson could design some nice boats but I don't think this is one of them. Phil. to be fair I'm pretty sure, but I could be wrong, I'm drawing on my long term memory here , but Roger simpsons original design was the Cloud 9. and ...

  5. Simpson catamaran designs?

In Australia Simpson designs have a reputation as solid cruising boats. Simpson got out of the design business by the early 2000s and his boats may look a little dated now for some. They don't usually have daggerboards and are usually owner built. There were some production Simpsons - Cloud 9 and Formula one cats.
