The charter was excellent, everything perfect. The boat was in super condition (brand new), and very clean. The staff was helpful, and very kind. We enjoyed the trip very much and are looking forward to our next booking.

“We tried to make the most of it, but it was far from ideal”

Hey Grigory, thanks for asking. The boat was not in good condition. For example, there were no mooring, deck or motoring lights, so we feared a boat would hit us while we slept, and were not complying with the law while sailing at night. The anchor w…

Sailing Croatia

Without a doubt, Croatia can be described as one of the best  kept secrets of the European sailing destinations. Sheltered by the  chain of the Dinaric Alps, its endless coastline is covered with  pristine beaches and charming medieval towns. A Croatia yacht charter is  a wonderful choice whether you are looking for a relaxed sailing  vacation with your family, or an exiting sailing adventure with your  friends. This region has many secluded islands and islets, along with a  wide variety of comfortable marinas. You can choose a boat charter in  Croatia with easy hops or longer, more challenging passages.

A Croatian sailing vacation offers a wonderful chance to explore  ancient ruins and historic cities, to stay for a night in a secluded  anchorage, or to visit traditional fishing villages - all of this in one  of the most beautiful landscapes in Europe.

Yachting is one of the most popular forms of recreation in Croatia,  thus numerous catamarans and sailboats can be seen all over the  coastline. Croatia yacht charters are well developed. Here you will find  one of the biggest European chains of modern marinas with berths for  yachts and catamarans from 30 to over 100 feet long. Anchorages,  moorings, and marinas have all the necessary amenities and are located  within a few miles of one another. In addition, while sailing in Croatia  you will find many free moorings near family restaurants where you can  sample local wines and fresh seafood right on board your own yacht.

The Adriatic coastline can be divided into three counties: Istria,  Central Dalmatia and South Dalmatia. Yacht charters in Croatia are  available all along the coast. Below are some useful tips for selecting a  boat rental in Croatia that will help you find the perfect time and  place for your dream sailing trip.

North Croatia Sailing – Istria County

July to the middle of September is the best time for a yacht  charter in the northern part of Croatia. During this season the water is  warm and most days are sunny, while the prevailing wind is mild  mistral. In early spring and late autumn this area may be prone to bora,  strong local northeastern winds.

One of the most convenient places to start a North Croatia yacht  charter is in Pula, the city closest to the international airport.

During your sailing vacation in the northern region of Istria, we  recommend a visit to the former Tito`s state summer residence, his  favorite safari park in the Brijuni Islands, to walk under the ancient  pines of Mali Losinj and to sail under the picturesque Cres Island  bridge. The stunning view of the ancient Rovigno City and its main  landmark, St. Euphemia Basilica, can be seen only from the water. If you  are looking for a more challenging sailing passage in Croatia, you may  like to head from Pula directly to Venice. Within a several hour journey  you will find yourself along the Italian coast.

Southern Croatia boat rentals – Dubrovnik County

Since ancient times Croatia has had great strategic importance,  thus over the centuries various civilizations and cultures have left  part of their legacy and influence, creating a rich and diverse culture.

Sailing along the southern Adriatic Coast of Croatia is recommended  for sailors with moderate to good sailing experience. In this part of  the country, good weather and fair winds last longer into the season, so  you can explore the sights and enjoy the beauty of the Adriatic coast  until late autumn. The climate is typically Mediterranean, with hot, dry  summers and cool, wet winters.

Dubrovnik sailing vacations

A yacht charter in Dubrovnik, the southernmost region of  Croatia, offers a great variety of comfortable marinas and secluded  moorings. The medieval city of Dubrovnik is called the "Pearl of the  Adriatic" and because of its long history of maritime trade, has played  an important role since ancient times. Today its blend of historic  architecture and modern cafes and nightlife make it a fascinating  destination.

The rugged coast south of Croatia is a great choice for sailors who  value stunning scenery and historical sites more than the distance  passed. What could be better than having breakfast on board your yacht  near an ancient fortress of an old town

During a yacht charter in Croatia, you won't want to miss a visit to  Mljet National Park and the golden island of Sipan. There you will find  stunning vistas of the Dalmatian Islands and enjoy a landscape covered  with orange and tangerine trees, palms, agaves, Renaissance parks,  flower gardens and medieval stone buildings.

Sailing in Split area

The Split area is one of the most popular Croatia yacht charter  destinations. Located only 10 minutes from the airport, it attracts  sailors from all over the Europe. A Split yacht charter is an easy  starting point for a sailing vacation in Croatia, with open access to  the most stunning destinations and secluded islands.

Within a 7-day Croatia yacht charter you will be able to visit Hvar,  an island popular for its exclusive cafes and bars on the Adriatic,  learn how to extract marble on the island of Bra, visit famous Korula  island, the birthplace of Marco Polo, and soak up history and culture  with Renaissance cathedrals and ancient monuments while walking the  ancient streets of Trogir.

When sailing in the Split area do not miss a chance to visit the  waterfalls located in Krk National Park, a gorgeous destination any time  of year.

Overall, a Croatia yacht charter offers an ideal mix of history,  exquisite Mediterranean cuisine and unforgettable sailing opportunities.  With excellent infrastructure, short passages and calm waters, Croatia  yacht charters rival any other sailing destinations in the world.

It is also a perfect country for those who are looking for an unforgettable sailing adventure in Europe.

Conversely, smaller 'all inclusive' type vacations cost between Euro 15,000 to 50,000 per week.

Top Croatia Luxury Yacht Charter Highlights:

Lovers of island-hopping will get their fair share when visiting Croatia. And what better way to explore islands than by yacht? With hundreds of unspoiled islands along the Dalmatian coast, there are plenty of hideaways as well as vibrant hot-spots to choose from. Whether you are into a bustling night-life or secluded anchorages, Croatia has everything and anything for all. The Northern Adriatic and the Kornati Archipelago generally offer more serenity with the Southern Croatian coastline being livelier and more energetic. Here's an introduction of the main spots to consider visiting:

Brac is the third largest island in Croatia and the largest in Dalmatia. It is perhaps the most famous thanks to the small village called Bol and it's very photogenic Golden Horn beach. The island is covered in pine forests, olive groves and vast vineyards with a somewhat romantic feel to it. It has a wealth of cultural and historical heritage dating back to the prehistoric times, unique cuisine and lovely beaches. Brac is separated from mainland Croatia by the 5 to 13 km wide Brač Channel. The island’s tallest peak is a respectable 778 meters high (Vidova gora, or Mount St. Vid) making it the highest island point in the Adriatic Sea. Brac has a permanent population of 14,436 and its biggest town is called Supetar, with more than 3,300 inhabitants.

With its UNESCO Heritage site the 'Old Town Dubrovnik', Dubrovnik is a must stopover on any Croatia yacht charter. Step into the world of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque walking the narrow cobbled streets awing at the fascinating architecture this beautiful city has on offer. After a day of culture and history, enjoy a fabulous meal in one of the many fine-dining restaurants recommended by your Captain and the crew, followed by a cocktail or two with other jet-sets in an exclusive night club. If loud music and dancing is not your thing, you could sample some of Croatia's excellent wines in one of the relaxed and quaint little wine bars or sip on a late night coffee watching the passersby. Dubrovnik's high stone city walls are a trademark of this city, and other attractions such as Luza Square, Stradun, Sponza Palace, Orlando's Column, the City Hall, the National Theatre, the Rector's Palace, the Bishop's Palace and the grand facade of the Baroque Cathedral are all well worth visiting.

Hvar, a gorgeous Croatian island, is a popular stop-over for luxury yacht charterers and superyacht owners. It is also known as the Queen of the Dalmatian Islands. Hvar Town prides itself on several stunning Gothic palaces, romantic marble stone streets, 13th-century walls as well as plenty of fantastic night-clubs, bars, up-market restaurants and cafes. Hvar is a great destination for families or friends looking for quality service. There are also fantastic beaches as well as, of course, the beautiful ancient architecture, history and cultural heritage. Located off the Dalmatian coast, lying between the islands of Brač, Vis and Korčula the Island is around 68 km (42.25 miles) in length, with a high east-west ridge of Mesozoic limestone and dolomite. More about

Well known for its traditional Knights' dance celebrating the Turkish assaults on the island, Korcula is one of the destinations to include in your Croatia yacht charter itinerary. This beautiful island, covered with lush green forests of Aleppo pine, cypress and oak trees welcomes its visitors with a colourful cultural heritage and interesting legends. Stroll the enchanting narrow cobbled streets of the town of Korcula, surrounded by 13th-century walls. It's sixth largest island in Croatia, at 20 miles long and between 4 and 5 miles wide on average. This island is known for it's forest the ancient Greeks called the island Black Korcula (Kerkyra melaina).

Approaching Mljet aboard your Croatia motor yacht or sailing yacht you will be witnessing one of the most beautiful and greenest islands of the Adriatic. Mljet is also home to the Mljet National Park boasting two interconnecting salt-lakes of Veliko Jazero and Malo Jazero. The lakes are proclaimed unique geological and oceanographic phenomenons of worldwide importance, with origins dating back 10, 0000 years. An interesting fact about these lakes is that they were freshwater lakes up until the Christian era. Beautiful rich forests descend all the way down to the lakes, thus creating an impression of an unspoiled natural environment. The Benedictine Monastery of St. Mary from the 12th century is situated on the Big Lake, and represents an important part in the history which dates back to the Illyrian tribes, the Roman Empire and the Republic of Dubrovnik.

Visitors on luxury yacht charters travel to Pula to admire its magnificent roman ruins that incorporate remains of an ancient roman amphitheatre, still standing as an imposing structure on the higher point of the city port. The city is located at the southern tip of the Istria peninsula with a great tradition in fishing shipbuilding and wine making. There are beautiful beaches running almost one hundred miles along the stunning coastline, as well as outstanding restaurants, bars, boutiques and souvenir shops in town. There are many events organised throughout the year in Pula, with one of the most famous events being the International Film Festival. For hiking enthusiasts, the city is surrounded by the lush Brijuni National Park.

Split (or Spalato in Italian), with its Adriatic feel and ancient Roman roots, is another popular stopover for Croatia boat charterers and the second largest city in Croatia. Boasting of a unique cultural heritage and various events, Split is a fantastic holiday destination in any season. A meeting point of modern lifestyle with traditionalism, this city is always vibrating with life and energy. Here you will find UNESCO's Diocletian's Palace as well as numerous bars, night clubs, exclusive restaurants, high-fashion boutiques and other fun places to visit.

Intriguing history and cultural heritage make Sibenik another destination worthwhile visiting. The archipelago of the Sibenik Riviera is made up of 242 islands, islets and reefs boasting of picturesque coves, pristine sea and tranquility. In this area you will find the Krka and Kornati national parks, and the towns of Sibenik, Vodice, Primosten, Rogoznica and the island of Murter being perhaps the most renowned to visitors. Sibenik town is located in a gorgeous bay, where the river Krka flows into the sea. Historical monuments to visit in Sibenik include Cathedral of St Jacob, St Krsevan church, St. Francis church, the city hall and the St Michael, St Ivan, Subidavac and St Nicholas fortresses.

Sukosan is a picturesque little town located in the Zlatna Luka bay, about 7km south-east of Zadar. Sukosan is known for its vineyards, olive groves and farming as well as a sought after destination among sailors thanks to its marina Dalmacija - the largest marina of the Adriatic Coast. The marina represent a meeting point between two important vacation hot spots - Sukosan and Bibinje, both renowned for their rich history and colourful traditions, as well as an important stopover for yachtsman and sailors. Interesting monuments to visit in Sukosan include the Church of Our Lady of Mercy, situated in the centre of the old village and dating back to 1650. Other historical sites include the church of St Cassian, All Saints Church, Crkva Sv. Martina, The Upper Gate, or the 15th century Archdiocesan mansion - Palac.

Trogir represents one of the oldest cities on the Adriatic coast in Croatia, with the main 'centre' of Trogir being a small island located between the hills and the coast of the island of Ciovo. The entire Trogir Riviera is made up of 20 islands, islets, small counties and little villages, making this area a lovely destination to visit aboard a luxury yacht. Its rich history was built upon the old Greek, Roman and Venetian culture, offering plenty of churches, towers, fortresses and other monuments to visit. Torgir is also on the list of UNESCO world heritages sites.

Also located on the Trogir Riviera is the small and quaint little fishing town of Vinisce. The first mention of Vinisce dates back to 1272, although it is believed that it was inhabited much earlier. There are numerous beautiful churches to visit with the church of the Blessed Virgin Mary being the most important, as well as the church of St Antun Padovanski from the 18th century. Several beautiful bays can be found around Vinisce with attractive pebble and sand beaches. Yacht charterers will find a good selection of lovely restaurants, cafes, bars as well as souvenir shops. Vinisce is a great location for surfing, swimming, sunbathing, snorkelling or simply relaxing enjoying its warm Mediterranean atmosphere.

FUN IN THE WATER

Yacht charterers travelling to Croatia will find a huge selection of beaches, from small coves with pebbles and rocks through to beautiful secluded sandy beaches that can only be approached by a boat. The sea is crystal clear and, as opposed to many Mediterranean coastlines, still teaming with underwater life - so get your snorkelling and diving gear out and ask your Captain and crew for the best areas to explore under water. As well as diving and sunbathing, there are plenty of other water activities to engage in. Luxury yachts available for rent in Croatia all include a good selection of various water toys which are at guests' disposal. Yacht tenders, jet skis, water skis, donuts, bananas, water slides and other toys can be found aboard these vessels - please, ask our brokers for the full list of amenities and extras aboard your preferred boat.

MOUTH-WATERING EXPERIENCES

If you are passionate about fine cuisine and wine, be prepared to indulge in a variety of Mediterranean produce and dishes while on your vacation. One of the perks of hiring a Croatia based yacht is having your 'personal' chef on board. Superyacht Chefs are accustomed to creating high-quality dishes made of the best and finest ingredients on the market, and often source fresh produce from the local growers and producers. They are highly trained individuals with years of training and experience in fine-dining restaurants or five-star hotels. Prior to embarking on your holiday, in order to create a personalised menu and stock up on all necessary ingredients, you will be asked about your meal preferences, allergies, intolerance or desires. Croatia coastal region is mainly represented by fresh seafood and fish, accompanied by fresh salads and various vegetables, and the use of locally produced olive oil. The dishes are often paired with fine Dalmatian wines from the local vine-growers and producers. You will find a large Mediterranean influence and a wide variety of dishes to choose from.

CROATIA'S UNESCO HERITAGE SITES

Renowned for its rich culture and heritage, Croatia is home to seven sites that have been added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. First one is the Episcopal Complex of the Euphrasian Basilica in the Historic Centre of Porec, with the earliest constructions dating back to 313. The basilica features outstanding mosaics and tiled illustration. The Cathedral of St. James in Sibenik is the second site on the list and represents a cultural mix of Northern Italy, Dalmatia and Tuscany of the 15th and 16th centuries. Trogir, situated northwest of Split boasts beautiful Romanesque churches and Venetian-era Renaissance and Baroque constructions. Split's Diocletian's Palace is another UNESCO monument and a historical complex built in the 3rd and 4th centuries by Roman emperor Diocletian. Moving onto the island of Hvar, although unknown to many tourist, Stari Grad Plain is also on the UNESCO list. This is an ancient stone wall that divides the land into twenty-four plots of grapes and olives, which have been continuously used for the past 2400 years. The Old City of Dubrovnik is also popular with discerning yacht charter tourists, with its Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque churches, monasteries and palaces, as well as fabulous atmosphere, lovely cafes, bars and a vibrant nightlife. The seventh UNESCO Heritage site are the Plitvice Lakes, located inland Croatia.

There are numerous beautiful natural parks in Croatia well worth visiting when holidaying on a Croatia superyacht charter. Located on the western coast of Istria, National Park Brijuni consists of two larger and twelve smaller islands. The islands, in addition to their astonishing natural beauty, are renowned for their important cultural heritage which goes back to the Roman and the Byzantine eras. Represented by 140 islands, islets and reefs, the Kornati archipelago draws visitors, and in particular sailing and boating enthusiasts, thanks to the distinctive shapes of reefs and crags, and the imposing high cliffs.

Mljet National Park on the island of Mljet is perhaps the most significant protected area on the Southern Dalmatian coast. Mljet island is regarded as one of the most alluring islands to visit in Croatia, with the 12th century Benedictine monastery being one of its cultural heritage attractions. Krka with its seven amazing waterfalls is another famous and popular national park in Croatia, which deserves a day-trip inland. In addition to the waterfalls, historical monuments such as the Franciscan monastery on the little island of Visovac and the Krka Orthodox monastery are also sought-after attractions for visitors. Renowned for peculiar karstic formations - Hajducki kukovi and Rozanski kukovi, the Northern Velebit National Park offers biggest selection of flora and fauna in Croatia. There is also a pothole Lukina Jama (Luka's pothole) or a lovely botanical garden to visit.

Northern Velebit National Park is a fantastic place for hiking and trekking, offering unparalleled views of the Kvarner islands from the trail. Plitvicka Jazera is perhaps the most famous Croatian National Park and only one of eight on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list. The park is made up of sixteen small lakes joined by waterfalls and surrounded by dense forests. Plitvicka Jazera (or Plitvice Lakes) is located inland Croatia and can be visited on a day-trip. Another Croatian natural wonder is the Plaklenica National Park where yacht charterers with passion for hiking and tracking will find their peace. Plaklenica is renowned for its two gorges - Velika and Mala Plaklenica, as well as for its interesting karstic forms, caves and lush flora and fauna.

My 5 Days On A Luxury Super Yacht — What I Loved, And My One Regret

  • Types of Travel

Imagine this: a bespoke holiday experience set in one of the world’s most beautiful locations, where you, your family, and your friends can literally choose your own adventure. From cuisine to cocktails, kicking back to adventuring, you set the rules. An entire crew will be at your service at all times to manage every aspect of your dream vacation, and no ask is too big — or too small.

That’s the experience I had on the gorgeous Adriatic Sea. I was invited to spend 5 days on board the Ohana , a $3 million super yacht based in Croatia available for private charter. The exclusive experience isn’t just for the jet set anymore; turns out this sort of vacation is actually more attainable than ever. Here are my top takeaways about the luxe travel option, and why it might just be the perfect way to celebrate your next big special event!

The Ohana docked in the coastal town of Makarska

Destination: Dalmatian Coast

With more than a thousand miles of coastline, the pristine Dinaric Alps, hundreds of islands, and sparkling-clear water, Croatia’s natural beauty is immediately evident. Throw in a temperate climate, loads of culture and history tucked into picture-perfect towns, and some of the friendliest people I’ve ever met on my travels, and it’s not hard to see what makes this Balkan nation so very special.

However, it’s no longer the hidden-gem destination it was a dozen years ago. The jet-set and celebs routinely charter mega yachts on the beautiful Dalmatian Coast, and during my visit, locals described to me how summers often turn the otherwise idyllic islands into a frenzied free-for-all.

I was lucky enough to visit during shoulder season. The summer crowds had dissipated, the vibe was laid-back, and the weather was still warm. A super-yacht cruise was the perfect way to explore the beautiful country.

The Small-Ship Experience

While I’ve cruised before, it has been on far larger ships; hitting the open sea on a yacht accommodating just 35 guests was a new experience. I was invited aboard Ohana by Goolets , a charter company based in neighboring Slovenia. The Goolets staff (the name is a wink to the gulet , a traditional wooden sailing vessel) works with each client individually to assess their interests and preferences. They then recommend a yacht from their preferred fleet and take it from there. From building out the menu and bar to arranging activities, itineraries, and transfers, it all adds up to a customized, picture-perfect vacation.

“Attention to detail is what makes the difference,” Goolets founder Mitja Mirtič explained. “When demands are made, they are expected to be fulfilled in an ‘over-the-top’ fashion. There is no room for mistakes.”

Upon embarking, I immediately felt at ease. The small but attentive crew warmly welcomed me with cocktails as my luggage was whisked away to my cabin. I met our stewards, deckhands, captain, and chefs; explored the 160-foot yacht; and settled into what would be my home for the next 5 days.

While I had a general sense of the itinerary, I’d not visited Croatia before, so my approach was simple: embrace it all!

The Ohana docked beside the gorgeous island of Korčula

From Culture Vulture To Water Baby

We left the gorgeous port city of Split and headed to three islands: first Brač and Hvar, then Korčula. Each was quite different; all were stunning and historic. While on Brač, I was able to stroll down to the famous horn-shaped Zlatni Rat and sunned on the pebbled, pristine beach. I wandered the town of Bol and sampled some lovely Croatian vintages at Stina Winery . On Hvar, I hiked up its historic fort and marveled at centuries-old churches, squares, and the historic Palace Elisabeth — named for the Hapsburg empress who donated money for the original building that was once a spa.

Korčula’s walled city was an absolute gem, with its cobblestone streets, chapels, city museum, and belltower with an extraordinary view. As we headed back north, Makarska and Omiš were also explore-worthy stops. With Venetian, Ottoman, and Hapsburg influences all still felt in Croatia, there was plenty to experience at every port of call.

Jet Ski near the Ohana on the Adriatic

We also had time to enjoy the Adriatic, with swim stops each day. There were water toys — from inflatables and paddleboards to kayaks and even a wave runner. When I was ready to warm up, the upper deck hot tub fit the bill. And of course, the crew had guests covered with snacks, beverages, and extra towels.

The private charter experience allowed me to have the best of both worlds: I was able to learn about the history and culture of Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast while also kicking back and enjoying the sun and water. It was perfect, thanks to the careful planning of the staff and crew.

Captain Josip Šerka piloting the Ohana

A Warm, Family Feel

When I mentioned my upcoming Croatia adventure to friends, many jokingly asked if I’d be sailing on a disgraced oligarch’s super yacht.

In a word, nope. As it turns out, Ohana is a family affair.

The Croatian tradition of sailing has been strong for generations. And with the destination now teeming with tourists, those traditions are more important than ever. Case in point: Ohana ’s captain Josip Šerka also owns the super yacht. The pride he took in her — and his crew’s performance — was evident. The level of service I experienced on board wasn’t fussy or too formal. Rather, it was comprehensive and comfortable.

“These ships are not only large and super spacious with perfect services,” Mirtič told me. “They also have souls, and you can almost feel the energy and effort that was built into them.”

That soul was evident after dinner one evening. Captain Josip presented one of the youngest members of our sailing group with a cake, blazing with birthday candles. It was a sweet way to go the extra mile.

A crew member aboard the Ohana

Not Exactly Below Deck — And That’s A Good Thing!

Many of us are familiar with the reality show Below Deck . The hit Bravo TV series takes viewers inside all of the behind-the-scenes angst involved with a yacht charter from the crew’s perspective. I watched a few episodes, with dread, prior to my trip. The last thing I wanted was drama of any sort.

Thankfully, there was none to be had.

Captain Josip admitted there have been a few eyebrow-raising requests of Ohana ’s crew in past sailings, but he explained each was handled discreetly, effectively, and to the guests’ satisfaction. I’m glad our sailing group was more interested in kicking back than being obnoxious and making ridiculous requests.

The author drinking champagne on the Ohana

A Bit Too Spoiled

During our 5 days at sea, I ate every meal on board, with local seafood, hand-crafted pastas, and beautiful Croatian wine complimenting each dish. It was all delicious, but quite filling. However, Ohana didn’t have a gym on board, which meant no running. First-world problem? Absolutely, but I did miss getting my miles in!

That situation is now remedied. Ohana recently received a glow-up with extensive renovations recommended by Goolets. Lower-deck cabins were converted to add a theater and a children’s playroom, and an outdoor gym space was built for guests to now work off those incredible meals.

Dubrovnik, Croatia

My One Regret

Ohana set sail from Split and I booked two extra nights there prior to boarding the yacht so I could get to know the city. The islands we visited were gorgeous as well. The only thing missing? Dubrovnik, the gem widely considered one of the most gorgeous towns on the Dalmatian Coast.

In a typical charter experience, this wouldn’t have been an issue. It could have been mentioned to the crew and a stop there would have been scheduled. However, I’m still kicking myself for not factoring in more time to visit on my own. It was poor planning on my part; certainly not the fault of my gracious hosts.

On the bright side, it gives me the perfect reason to return to Croatia!

The Ohana's salon, or dining room

You Don’t Have To Be A Multi-Millionaire To Vacation Like This

Chartering the Ohana starts at about $100,000. That includes a mandatory advance provisioning allowance covering food, drink, and port taxes.

Crunch the numbers and this exclusive travel experience is now within reach. After her refit, Ohana will sleep 30 people. That’s on par, per person, with a week-long cruise on leading lines… one where you don’t get to choose your own adventure with your family or closest friends.

The vessels in Goolet’s fleet aren’t billionaire’s boats. You won’t find helipads, beach clubs, or huge swimming pools on board. But their super yachts are a lovely and affordable option absolutely worth considering for a big birthday, anniversary, or other special events (especially if you want to celebrate in one of the most gorgeous corners of the planet).

The hybrid approach — balancing between traveling on a super yacht and being mindful of budget — has proved to be a popular one. Mirtič says interest in Ohana bookings remains high.

“Do the ships have the same ‘glitz’ as mega yachts that charter for [around $819,000] a week? Of course not,” he says. “Are people willing to pay [around $102,400] to charter a 50-meter, 10-plus-cabin vessel with super-yacht services? Heck yes!”

By John Roberts & Heidi Sarna

If you haven’t been to Croatia, you don’t know what you’re missing.  Yacht cruises along the Dalmatian coast of Croatia are one of our favorite small-ship cruise experiences, and for good reason.

Croatia’s rocky coastline stretches for more than 1,000 miles along the eastern edges of the Adriatic Sea, from just south of Italy’s Trieste to Montenegro. Countless craggy limestone islands are scattered along the jagged coast, creating one of world’s most scenic places to cruise — right up there with Norway’s fjords, Alaska’s glaciers, and the Greek Isles.

Speaking of Greece, small-ship sailing among its gorgeous isles, coasts and harbors has long been coveted.

That said, the difference between yachting around the Greek Isles vs Croatia is that Croatia offers an experience that features all the beauty and even better affordability — with generally calmer seas.

The island groups dotting the pleasant waters of the Adriatic Sea along the Dalmatian Coast are clustered relatively close together so that you can easily visit numerous ports during one voyage — with each spot offering distinct charms and history.

Croatia Yacht Cruise Charters

In the COVID-19 era (and post COVID era), private Croatia yacht cruise charters along the coast and among the islands of Croatia are small-ship cruise experiences that make sense.

The intimate sailings offer a more controlled and thus relatively safe environment as you spend your days among a small group of friends or family enjoying days filled with sunshine, swimming and exploring ports, many quite remote. Among the various visitors to Croatia, many come from North America, the UK, Australia and New Zealand.

With breathtaking views from your yacht’s top deck, a voyage along the Dalmatian Coast is a fantastic way to soak up the natural beauty and rich history of the country.

Croatia’s Deep History

The Romans established the province of Dalmatia, the precursor to Croatia, along the Adriatic Sea more than 2,000 years ago. Dalmatia thrived from about 11 BC to the fifth century AD.

Over the centuries, powerful empires, from the Greeks to the Romans, Slavs, Venetians, Ottomans, and Austro-Hungarians, would leave their mark on what would become the Croatia we see today.

We’re lucky that many spectacular and well-preserved relics remain, from fourth-century palaces to medieval fortresses, cathedrals and classic turreted city walls. The most spectacular — Dubrovnik’s City Walls, Diocletian’s Palace in Split and Hvar’s Old Town — are UNESCO World Heritage sites.

You’ll also find memorials and dedications to the Croatian War of Independence from 1991 to 1995, during which the country was entrenched in a civil war with Serbian forces while striving to secede from the former Yugoslavia. When you visit the gorgeous towns and villages along the coast today, it’s mind-boggling to consider that not too long ago this was a war-torn region.

Activities in Croatia

Daily excursions include swimming and watersports right off the side of your yacht. And on shore, you can stroll, hike, kayak and bicycle. Eating counts as pastime too.

For the history buffs among us, there are no shortage of ancient sites to visit. Explore on your own, or sign up for a guided excursion; depending on your package, guided excursions may or may not be included in the fares.

Croatia Cuisine

All along the Dalmatian coast are regions known for wine and olive oil. Seafood is also especially good here, too, from oysters to squid, octopus, mussels and fish, the later served grilled or in a traditional stew.

Croatian cuisine is based on heritage rooted in Central Europe, Italy and Turkey. These influences meld to give you Croatian favorites like cabbage leaves filled with minced meat, cevapcici rolls and dumplings.

Beaches in Croatia

Croatia boasts crystal-clear waters along its coast. Beaches are popular spots for tourists and residents, alike, although the country’s beaches are rocky and not the silky sands you associate with the Caribbean or South of France. They’re excellent places for people watching.

Still, Croatia’s beach regions offer the chance to play in the water, explore adjacent caves, paddle in idyllic coves or converge at nighttime for boisterous summer parties and festivals in places like Pag, Hvar and Split.

The Croatia Yacht Cruises Vibe

Life is lived up on deck and outside in the fresh air and sea. You’ll barely need to pack more more than your bathing suit!

Standard yachting voyages use small ships with modest accommodations that carry between six and 40 people on itineraries between the larger cities of Dubrovnik and Split or Hvar.

Trips typically last from two days to a week. You can find countless yachting outfits in Croatia that offer the tiny ships that dart around the islands and coastal ports to provide an intimate experience, including the four we feature in this article — Goolets, Sail Croatia, Katarina Line and Kompas Cruises.

Many of the yachts used are “gulets,” a Turkish term derived from the French word “goélette” and the Italian “goletta.”

These traditional-style 2- and 3-masted yachts are based on vessels that were once used as trading and fishing boats. Much like the “canal barge” cruises of France, the “gulet” yachts of Croatia, Greece and Turkey have been transformed into luxury conveyances for holidays, though their size and level of luxury varies as do their fares. Some quite posh, others very humble.

Private Croatia yacht cruise charters are highly curated, with the captain and crew able to design a flexible itinerary based on what you and your group would like to experience. Fill your days with hiking, biking, swimming in pristine bays, exploring historic sites or just relaxing over beers and regional cuisine at charming seaside towns or marinas.

You’re probably after a nice mix of all of these, huh?

While you can find plenty of high-end luxury yacht cruises in Croatia, as well as a number of departures available on larger vessels from Star Clippers and Ponant (other small-ship lines we cover on QuirkyCruise.com) that carry 170 to 184 passengers, this Croatia yacht cruise charters roundup will show you four awesome options for a fantastic voyage that won’t break the bank.

The following 4 Croatia yacht cruise companies are ideal for private charters for friend and family groups:

Katarina line.

This family-owned line has operating for some 30 years offers a broad range of cruising styles and lengths on more than 60 small ships that are chartered from Croatian captains who provide a special personal touch to your yachting experience. They can also help with hotel bookings and other tourist services for a stay in Croatia.

Katarina Line offers Deluxe, Premium or Standard cruises roundtrip or one way traveling among the ports of Split, Dubrovnik and Opatija, as well as special Active cruises and Land and Cruise combos.

Ships sail for about four hours each day, overnighting in ports and sailing just after breakfast each day.

The scenic sailing takes you to intimate bays and swimming areas, where you anchor for a bit of swim time and water sports before lunch onboard. Then, you continue on to the next port stop for your exploration ashore, dinner on your own with your fellow travelers and an overnight on the ship.

The schedule is fairly flexible, but this represents the basic outline that can be adjusted based on weather conditions and desires of the group — maybe you want more time swimming or seek to get to the port earlier to try an organized tour that explores popular points of interest.

Katarina Line offers a range of excursions that are added on for a fee. You can tour Plitvice Lakes or go sea kayaking around Dubrovnik, for example.

Most of the sailing options fall under the Deluxe and Premium cruise category , and almost all of these ships offer accommodations with private bathrooms and air conditioning.

The Standard cruise category attracts budget travelers, often younger folks and backpackers, generally, ages 18 to 35.

Katarina Line’s newer Deluxe and Premium ships see passengers typically in the 40 to 60-ish age range. Travelers represent a fairly international mix, though with mostly English-speaking couples from the U.S., U.K., Europe and Australia.

All of the cruises include breakfast and lunch in your cruise fare.

The Ships of the Katarina Fleet

Katarina Line operates a fleet of more than 60 vessels — a combination of deluxe and standard yachts and small gulets — that carry from five to 38 passengers . Fares are partially inclusive, with some meals, one bottle of water per day and one drink with lunch onboard, some transfers to and from the airport or your hotel, plus tastings and guided tours (as indicated in your itinerary).

An English-speaking tour guide sails along to manage the schedule. The ships offer free WiFi.

The Deluxe or Premium ships might have hot tubs and loungers on the sun deck.

Katarina Itineraries

Cruises range from two to seven days in length and visit destinations such as Korcula, Metkovic, Sibenik, Zadar, Rab, Vis and Hvar, departing from the main embarkation ports of Dubrovnik, Split and Opatija.

This company focuses on full-ship charters of its more than 70 luxury gulets — traditional small two- or three-masted wooden boats for friends and family groups. Custom itineraries are created for each charter.

Goolets’ charters are luxury small ship experiences with typically eight to 12 passengers on a sailing paying at least $1,200 USD per person for a week of cruising along the Adriatic Coast.

Most passengers hail from English-speaking countries, including the USA, UK, South Africa, Australia, Israel, and also European countries from Germany to France, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Italy and Belgium, as well as Mexico and Chile.

The company prides itself on offering full service and support, guiding customers on choosing the appropriate ship, itinerary, tours, menu and transfers to and from the vessels.

A personal assistant is assigned to each sailing to help create the type of cruise desired. For active cruisers, Goolets offers snorkeling, scuba, rafting and hiking.

They can also help design gourmet-style holidays that emphasize culinary tours and wine tasting, or cruises focused on history and cultural tours.

When it comes to food preferences, the galley and bar will stock your requests to accommodate allergies and favorite meals and drinks.

The smaller ones typically are more austere ships with compact cabins and tiny en suite bathroom facilities.

All the ships will generally have sun loungers, some WiFi access and extras like snorkel equipment and jet skis and water skis.

Catamaran MALA is a Lagoon 570 based in Split, Croatia. This sailing catamaran was taken over by the new owners, who are also the current crew, and fully refitted to a very high standard in 2018/19.

We have given catamaran MALA the award for excellence following the great success of every charter over the past couple of years.

We consider catamaran MALA to be one of the best crewed yachts on the Adriatic. In so many ways, they offer a perfect set up:

- The crew, Zoki and Sanja (they also own the boat) are outstanding. They absolutely love what they do and they do it so well. They have poured so much love into refitting and preparing the boat to a very high standard. Sanja is a passionate chef, eco-and health-oriented. They are attentive, they are great wine connoisseurs and they know the area extremely well. - Catamaran Mala offers three en suite cabins (really good size master cabin, slightly smaller VIP double cabin and a double cabin.) - Great attention to detail. - Good choice of water toys on board. - The floating island has been so popular with everyone, particularly as it turns into an outdoor cinema screen in the evenings.

Catamaran MALA can accommodate up to six guests in three en suite cabins: - Master cabin - VIP cabin - Double cabin

Riva Yacht Charter

Riva yacht description.

Presented by DMA Yachting, the astonishing charter yacht Riva is a 158 ft motor yacht featuring a hot tub. The most attractive features of Riva are her most appealing features and culinary experience. Riva spends the summer season in Croatia. She was constructed by a custom yachtbuilder in 2018. The ingenious yacht layout features 18 large cabins and comfortably accommodates up to 36 guests.

Riva is classified as a superyacht. The key part of the yacht, expansive aft deck, continues to the attractive and sleek main salon. The main saloon is a gathering space to spend time when the aft deck might not be as desirable (at port, private conversations) and boasts a number of entertainment options. 18 elegant cabins are laid out to allow for comfortable access and private setting.

Croatia Private Yacht (7 nights)

Your luxury Croatia tour starts with your international flight arrival in Split, the country’s second-largest city. You will be greeted by your personal guide who will take you by private transfer to the old city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you will enjoy a light walking tour and explore Split’s living monuments, dating back to 293 AD. After a delicious lunch, take a private transfer to the port of Split where you will board your private luxury yacht and embark on a 7 night cruise. Enjoy the rest of the day at leisure and savor dinner aboard.

During your luxury private yacht charter through the Adriatic, you will visit some of the most picturesque villages and breathtaking beaches and grottos in the Adriatic. Highlights of our luxury private yacht charters in Croatia include: snorkeling in the Pakleni Island Archipelago; sightseeing in Hvar and Korčula towns; and taking a beautiful hike along the coast of Hvar Island that ends with lunch in the deserted stone village of Malo Grablje. You will also have the chance to visit the national park in Mljet, one of the most stunning islands in the Adriatic.

Blue Parallel works with the best yachts in the region and will recommend a vessel based on your specific group’s needs. In addition, the yacht will come equipped with a dedicated crew giving you the flexibility to alter the itinerary when needed, according to weather or personal preferences. Your yacht will feature comfortable cabins, ample deck space, a jacuzzi, and an assortment of water toys and snorkeling gear.

Dubrovnik (2 nights)

Your private yacht charter ends in Dubrovnik, a striking town characterized by a mix of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque churches, monasteries, palaces, and fountains. Following breakfast, disembark your private yacht and take a private transfer to your luxury hotel. Spend the rest of your morning at leisure before heading into Dubrovnik with your expert guide in the afternoon. Enjoy a gentle walk along the ancient city walls which have protected a civilized, sophisticated republic for centuries, and look out towards the shimmering Adriatic.

The next day, embark on a private sea kayaking excursion. Explore the caves of Lokrum Island and acquaint yourself with Dubrovnik from the seaside as you paddle beneath the old city walls. Return to the city to savor a well deserved lunch after your adventure before spending the afternoon at leisure. In the evening, enjoy a recommended dinner in town.

On your final day, you will be greeted by your personal host and taken by private transfer to Dubrovnik Airport where you will receive luggage and check-in assistance for your international flight home.
