Your Principal Instructor

Blue Water Sailing School Principal is Tim Foster. Now based in Melbourne, Tim has been sailing for over 40 years. He is a commercially certified skipper and RYA Cruising Instructor, with a Yachtmaster (Offshore), Sea Safety and Survival, Safety Boat Handling, YA Dinghy Instructor and many other qualifications. Former Commodore of the  Dobroyd Aquatic Club  where he won several club championships, divisional winner of the  Geelong Festival of Sails  and currently sailing at the  Royal Yacht Club of Victoria  and   Sandringham Yacht Club .

Coastal Navigation and Skipper Courses

  RYA Australian Yacht Training Program was formed in 2008 when Australian Sailing and RYA formed a partnership for the delivery of the RYA Cruising Scheme in Australia. The program provides internationally recognised practical on-water qualifications from “Competent Crew” through to “Yachtmaster Offshore” as well as the complementary shore based theory courses. 

Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Theory

The Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Theory course is more advanced training for more experienced skippers, building on the Day Skipper course.

This course equips you to navigate safely on coastal and offshore passages. It allows some time for revision of the basics and then moves on to advanced navigation techniques. The course will take your theory knowledge to the standard required for the Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Offshore practical exams, concentrating on advanced navigation and meteorology skills. It also equips you to navigate safely on coastal and offshore passages. There will be some revision of the basics before moving on to more advanced navigation techniques.  

As with the Day Skipper shore-based course, the specially designed chart plotter software will be used to give you a realistic taste of modern electronic navigation. The course will be related to Southern Hemisphere navigation resources and materials.

The course is runs over 40 hours with 3 exam papers.

What you’ll learn:

• Position fixing
• Course shaping and plotting
• Tidal knowledge
• Use of almanacs and admiralty publications
• Electronic position finding equipment
• Taking and interpreting forecasts
• Plotting weather systems
• Weather predictions using a barometer and by observation
• Collision regulations

Coastal Navigation Course (not RYA course)

The Coastal Navigation Course offers a great introduction to navigation and safety awareness for new or inexperienced skippers and crew, as well as those wanting to refresh their skills. In fact this course is for anyone who is interested in sailing, motor boating, sea angling or diving. The course works well in complementing our on-water training such as the Powerboat Level 2, Start Yachting and Helmsman courses. It’s a highly informative course with lots of opportunities for you to put your new found knowledge into practice.

What you’ll learn

At the end of this course you will have a basic understanding of:

• The International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea.
• Chart symbols, distance measurement, bearings, position & speed
• Tidal heights and streams
• Visual aids to navigation, buoyage, lights.
• Compass heading, variation and deviation.
• Chart plotting techniques.
• Electronic aids to navigation,
• Pilotage, and passage planning

Duration:  1 Full day and 4 Evenings

Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore Theory

Essential Navigation and Seamanship

Competent Crew

Coastal skipper practical (sail), day skipper practical (sail).

Cruising Level 1 – Start Sailing

This is an entry level course which can be run in conjunction with the Basic Skills course. It covers the basics of sailing a yacht, focusing on sailing skills and manoeuvres.

By the end of the course you will have a basic understanding of yacht handling under sail as well as the relevant background knowledge. It is recommended that all participants consolidate this short introduction with the Basic Skills Course .

Cruising Level 2 – Basic Skills

This course is designed to build on the skills gained durning the Start Sailing Course , focusing on the skills required to sail a cruising yacht. This course is great for families or individuals who wish to improve their existing yacht handling skills under sail.

Here at RBYC we offer a number of options for adults interested in sailing. Whether you are keen to learn in a dinghy or a keelboat, spend an afternoon or do a course. Discover Sailing courses can lead on to a  wide range of sailing and social opportunities  at RBYC, both  recreational and competitive .

Our Courses

Dinghy courses are tailored for adults and involve sailing on small exhilarating boats (one, two or three crew vessels).

Dinghies represent an ideal learning platform because thanks to their small size participants are safe and in full control of all sailing aspects. In more experienced hands though dinghies become action-packed boats suitable for sailors looking for a thrilling sail

All dinghy courses are run over 4 consecutive Saturdays

Keelboat courses use sailing boats up to 10m long which allow participants to learn to sail on stable yet responsive vessels. The crew is comprised of several sailors so all participants can experience and master all roles on board. Teamwork is essential and allows for participants of all fitness levels to learn to sail. These vessels are called Sport Keelboats for a reason though, more experienced crews will soon find out that these vessels are no snail!

Is it safe? Safety is the top priority at RBYC .  The club provides all the safety equipment needed and all instructors maintain current qualifications and certificates dictated by Australian Sailing and RBYC,  including first aid training and working with children checks .

Do I need to be a member of the club? You do not need to be a member of a club to take part in one of our adult courses

Do I need a boat? All boats are provided by RBYC

What do I need to bring? All the safety equipment is provided by the club. In addition you will need: – Clothes & shoes (including change) – wear ones you don’t mind getting wet and will keep you warm on cold days – Towel – Drink bottle – Hat – Sunscreen

Yacht Training Victoria is based at the traditional port of Williamstown on Port Phillip Bay, Victoria, Australia. We operate from the Royal Yacht Club of Victoria, Australia’s most senior yacht club, steeped in decades of history and tradition. We also offer some courses based from Royal Geelong Yacht Club.

Principal and Chief instructor Tony Johnson-Sneddon is a true mariner, having been associated with ocean sailing and the maritime industry for many years. Tony is a fully accredited RYA instructor. He is also a long-term yacht owner and understands the joys (and trials!) of the pastime.

RYA Day Skipper

At the end of this course you will be confident to skipper a cruising yacht on short passages by day in sheltered waters (for example Port Phillip).

Students who successfully complete the course are awarded the RYA Day Skipper certificate. This certificate is recognised throughout the world and can lead to a professional qualification.

Duration:   5 days consecutively

Previous experience required RYA Day Skipper Theory  or  RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Theory  course completion (or equivalent knowledge or experience) AND sailing ability to the level of  RYA Competent Crew .

The RYA recommends that students have the following experience as minimum: 5 days on a yacht, 100 miles experience and 4 hours night watch keeping.

Course Content

• Preparation for sea: Provisioning, crew briefing ,engine & safety equipment checks, stowage, weather, charts. Stability & buoyancy.
• Deck work: sail setting and reefing, anchoring, mooring to buoy and alongside.
• Yacht handling under power and sail, broad knowledge and skill.
• Navigation: fixes, electronic navigation, AIS system, Depth sounder, log, dead reckoning, estimated positions, course to steer, tide heights and streams, IALA buoyage and lights.
• Pilotage: preparing a plan, leading and clearing lines, transits and soundings
• Meteorology: sources of weather forecast, use of barometer
• Rules of the road: The International Regulations for Prevention of Collisions at Sea (IRPCS)
• Maintenance and repairs: checks and minor repairs, properties of rope
• Engine: changing fuel and oil filters, water pump impeller and bleed fuel system
• Victualing: what is required
• Emergency situations: Man overboard (MOB) techniques, distress flares, life-raft, radio, towing, rescue procedures
• Passage making: planning a passage
• Night cruising: entering and leaving port at night, identifying marks by night
