“"Scott and jack were wonderful! The knowledge of history and the surrounding area was truly impressive. Like Scott my husband is a nuclear submarine vet so shared so many stories. Had such a beautiful day and fun chatting I never saw below deck!! Thanks again for a wonderful time exploring Charleston’s port." ” Liz Andring 31 August,2022
“"We had another great day with Captain Dustin and Mattie on Mystique. Highly recommend for anyone visiting Charleston." ” Pete Pace 31 August,2022
“The BEST. Captain Scott and Adam were unreal. They gave us the best time on the water, giving us tips about Charleston and a little bit of a history lesson to go with it. Whenever we asked or needed something, they were right there. Not to mention these were the types of dudes you want to grab a beer with afterwards. We will definitely be back, next time with our kids. Can not say enough good things about our two hours sailing on The Fate with this ” Tom Sarnovsky 28 August,2022
As any local Charlestonian will tell you, don't let our weather forecasts fool you into missing out on a gorgeous charter or beautiful sunset! Our weather forecasts call for a 30-50% chance of rain nearly every day! If it does rain, it is usually only for a short period during a pop-up shower.
01 Will I get seasick?
Since we stay inside the harbor, protected from larger waves of the open sea, it is unlikely that you would get seasick. The water is calm and the boats are only subjected to large waves created by other boats. Concerned passengers could bring products that contain ginger, such as ginger cookers, or Ginger Ale because they have been known to help calm an upset stomach. Be sure to start taking ginger or any other sea-sickness medications the day before your charter for the best results. We recommend you stay away from the drowsy kinds. Recommendations are provided for informational purposes only. Please consult your physician with any questions regarding a medical condition.
02 Are your yachts safe?
Yes! Our yachts are clean, well-maintained, and fully insured for charter. All of our vessels meet or exceed safety requirements by the United States Coast Guard with onboard equipment that includes Type 1 Personal Flotation Devices (life jackets) for every passenger, an approved Sound Producing Device, fire extinguishers, flares, a VHF radio, & an approved throwable ring buoy. They also meet equipment, operation, and pollution prevention regulations established by the Coast Guard. Vessel Captains possess a valid license issued by the U. S. Coast Guard and undergo random drug screenings.
03 Can I bring more than 6 passengers?
Yes, on our Motor Yacht Kismet, which has been specifically designed to carry up to 23 passengers. You will find 23 to be pretty tight, we recommend keeping the maximum passenger count to under 20.
The sailing yachts both are limited to 6 passengers, however, you can rent boat sailboats and take 12, having 6 on each boat.
04 Do children or infants count as a passenger?
Yes, they do. The United States Coast Guard considers every person, except for the Captain and crew as a passenger. Children require supervision by parents or guardians at all times and must be capable of remaining calmly seated for several hours. If you are bringing younger children, we recommend a charter length of no longer than 2 hours.

Captain Bob gave us the ride of our weekend - could not have been more friendly, knowledgable, and accommodating. We've done a several similar rides but this was by far the best experience. HIGHLY recommend to both tourists and locals wanting a fun day at sea.

Rent a Boat in Charleston
With more than 95,000 miles of coastline, there are a lot of great places to be a boater in the United States. Charleston, South Carolina, for example. One of the most beautiful cities in America, Charleston has plenty of beachfront on the Atlantic Ocean but is also divided by a number of large and small waterways snaking in and around the city’s many islands, including the Stono River, Ashley River, and Cooper River.
There is plenty of great saltwater and freshwater fishing, lots of places to explore by boat, and plenty of room for wakeboarding, or jetskiing, or whatever you love. With several cool winter months, Charleston can give visitors a four-season feeling, but when the sun is shining, it’s hard to imagine a better place to own a powerboat or sailboat.
What To Know
Charleston has a very big boating community represented by just about any kind of vessel you could want. Center consoles and dayboats have become very common on most waters, but while in Charleston you are also likely to see -
Easy access to deep Atlantic waters make big sportfish, convertibles, and larger center consoles a common site offshore, but luxury yachts and mid-level cruisers are also plentiful.
Lots of places to explore, fish, or swim inshore and upriver make pontoon boats, runabouts, deck boats, and bowriders popular, but you will also find lots of flats skiffs and center consoles inshore as well.
Safety Requirements :
All states have some sort of regulations for boaters and South Carolina is no different. According to the S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) website -
In South Carolina, boat operators under age 16 must complete a boating course approved by the SCDNR to operate a boat or personal watercraft with a 15 h.p. motor or greater, unless accompanied by an adult age 18 years or older.
Any person under age 12 must wear a US Coast Guard approved Type I, II, III, or V PFD when on board a class “A” (less than 16 ft. long) boat.
Visit the S.C. DNR ERegulations website to learn more.
Where to dock your boat or meet your rental :
Charleston City Marina Dock
Charleston Harbor Marina
Seabreeze Marina
Shem Creek Boat Landing
Remleys Point Public Boat Landing
Weather Conditions
Charleston has long summers with lots of sun but the days can be hot and humid. Summer highs can hit the low 90s but usually stay closer to 85. Winter temperatures rarely get close to freezing, and Spring and Fall conditions are usually comfortable with lots of 60- and 70-degree days.
Late Spring and early Fall are great times to visit Charleston when temperatures are warm enough to enjoy the water but not hot enough to make air conditioning sound like a better option.
The Charleston area can see some rare hurricane activity late in the summer, so visitors should always be prepared for the possibility and have a plan just in case.
Avg. Temperature High : July is usually the hottest month with temps near 90°F
Avg. Temperature Low : January is the coolest month with temps close to 40°F
Avg. Water Temperatures in and around Charleston :
79°F to 83°F in the Summer (June, July, August)
63°F to 75°F in Spring (March, April, May)
70°F to 80°F in Fall (September, October, November)
63°F to 67°F in Winter (December, January, February)
Things to Do in Charleston by Boat
With the Atlantic’s deep water just outside the harbor, the many rivers feeding into Charleston Harbor, and a wide variety of reefs, flats, and salt marshes, there is no shortage of fishing opportunities in this historic city. Near the coast, buoys, shipwrecks, and reefs hold fish like grouper, cobia, and redfish, while offshore trips can yield tasty mahi-mahi or spectacular sailfish. When the weather doesn’t align with your plans, stay in the rivers and harbor and catch redfish, speckled trout, and black drum.
Something is biting year-round so check with the local pros and fish reports for the best time to chase your favorite species. Although July through September are considered the best months to fish, there is no “off-season” in Charleston.
Target species: Cobia, Redfish, Snapper, Kingfish, Amberjack, Grouper, and King Mackerel
Seasonality: May through September are usually the best months
Boat selection: Flats skiffs, center consoles, aluminum fishing boats, pontoon boats
Boat selection: Center consoles, runabouts, cruisers, pontoon boats
Target species: mahi-mahi, cobia, sailfish, sheepshead, king mackerel, amberjack, wahoo, tuna, grouper, and snapper
Boat selection: Sportfish, convertibles, big center consoles, cruisers
Visit Morris Island
Accessible only by boat, historic Morris Island sits just south of the entrance to Charleston Harbor. The 840-acre island was home to several strategic events during the American Civil War, along with nearby Fort Sumter.
Today, Morris Island features beautiful natural beaches with lots of shells, wildlife, and little else. There are no developments, facilities, or shops on the island, making it a remote getaway with few people around.
At the southeastern end of the island, 1600 feet from the shoreline, the beautiful and historic Morris Island lighthouse has been watching over the waters around Charleston since 1876. However, the light is off-limits to the public. The water eroding the lighthouse’s perch has made it impossible to get close on foot and dangerous to try. There are plenty of great viewing and photo spots on the main body of Morris Island.
With no conveniences, it’s important to remember to bring plenty of water, food, and sunscreen and stay hydrated in the summer sun.

Cruise Shem Creek and the Mount Pleasant Waterfront
Located on the northwestern edge of Charleston Harbor inland, Shem Creek winds three miles from the Charleston Harbor and along the Mount Pleasant waterfront until civilization falls away and leaves nothing but wetlands and wildlife.
The creek winds behind beautiful private homes, the local shrimp fleet, and provides access to dine and dock at several restaurants. Stop for dinner or cruise further up the creek in smaller vessels.
Pull up to the dock at Shem Creek Park, walk the boardwalk, and be treated to beautiful views of Charleston Harbor and the natural wetlands. The town of Mount Pleasant is a short walk from the water, putting shops, eateries, and other attractions within easy reach of the docks.

Filled with natural beauty, the tidal river features a wide variety of natural habitats and 26 national and regional historic sites.
The river waters are great for fishing, swimming, and cruising, or exploring and sightseeing while winding past cypress swamps and salt marshes. There are also a variety of small eateries and shops to see or sample on the trip inland or back to the harbor.

South, cruise along the South Carolina Low Country and explore the rivers and creeks that lead inland or anchor up and spend some time on the beach at Morris Island or Kiawah Island. AMAZING EXPERIENCE !!! I loved every second of the sailing adventure from start to finish. Had so much fun bonding with friends on the boat while the very professional crew sailed us around and made sure we had a fun and relaxing time. Jen and Janet did a great job at making sure we got to see all the beauty of Charleston and helped us watch one of the best sunsets I’ve seen.
To say that our experience was perfect is an understatement! Front the awesome views to the dolphins swimming right beside us, it was a trip I will definitely be taking again! Captains Jen and Janet were amazing...professional and laid back, they made us all feel at home and totally relaxed. A must-do in Charleston!
History, dolphins, the harbor of Charleston.... and a little wine. We really couldn’t have had a more perfect trip! The ladies Captaining the Shenanigan were very knowledgeable and made us feel safe the whole time. We plan on going again soon!

Welcome Aboard!
The pilot house.
Boarding Southern Comfort you will walk up a wooden staircase and enter through the pilot house. The pilot house door slides to the back of the boat. The marina is extremely safe and gated, and there are cameras all over, including one that looks over Southern Comfort. The marina is so safe that we've never had an incident in over 30 years of boating.
Walking through the pilot house door, you enter the pilot house itself. This is mainly where we drive the boat and most of the electronics are housed. You'll notice a very large steering wheel as well as a lot of buttons, dials, and radios. This stuff is usually off-limits to our clients and guests due to the sensitivity of the equipment. We do however have a nice pilot house seat where you can sit and overlook the comings and goings of the dock. Next to that is a wine fridge in which we house some of our wines and spirits.
The Flybridge
Just inside the pilot house door there's a ladder that leads to the flybridge. The flybridge is about six steps up and gets you to the top deck. This is also where we steer the boat while underway. It's accompanied by two captains chairs and farther aft a U-shaped seating for up to 10 people. The bridge has unobstructed views of the surrounding area and river. This is one of our most popular places to watch the sunset or the sunrise and relax with a glass of wine and some charcuterie. A canvas cover that reaches from the front of the pilot house to the radar arch gives shade and comfort on those hot and sunny days. Our tender is also aft of the seating area, and we rarely take that off the boat.
Back down in the pilot house, working aft, you enter the eat-in galley that seats up to six and includes a fully equipped kitchen. We have a full-size refrigerator and freezer, a microwave oven, stove, and an oven. A full two bay sink with garbage disposal and dishwasher also rounds out the galley area. We provide coffee and a coffee maker for our guests that are staying on board. The coffee is from a private roaster that we have been using at my restaurants for over 15 years.
Fully Equipped Kitchen
The Salon and Formal Dining Area
Aft of the eat-in kitchen is the salon and dining area. This is a large area that encompasses Italian leather couches and chairs and coffee tables. In this area you also find a wet bar and entertainment center with DVD player, surround sound radio, and cable TV. The formal dining area seats up to six and has enough room to welcome any dining accommodations. Through the salon out the back double doors, you'll find the aft deck. This is a private and secluded area to watch the sunset, relax, or watch dolphins run through the marina.
The Forward Guest State Room
Working forward to the lower level, you'll go down a spiral staircase through the pilot house and come to the forward guest state room. The forward guest state room is equipped with over under double beds, a closet, and en suite bathroom. There's also plenty of drawers to store all your belongings while on board.
The Library
Also on this level is our library and office complete with novels and books for you to read and enjoy. Forward of the library is the captains quarters.
Captain's Quarters
Walking down two steps from the hallway area you will find the Bow Stateroom. The head is equipped with a full shower, vanity, toilet, and new porcelain tile on the floor. All bathrooms come equipped with linens, soap, and shampoos. Over to starboard side are two twin bunk beds and forward of that is a large chest of drawers for all your belongings.
The Bow Stateroom
The Laundry & Storage Area
Walking aft, you go down three stairs into the port side. There you will find the washer and dryer and pantry area. Further from that is the linen closet with our back up linens.
The VIP Head & State Room
Further aft from that in the main hallway is the VIP head which was just renovated with marble countertops, porcelain tile, and all new fixtures. This also has a separate shower which is roomy enough for just about anybody. Making a slight right turn, directly in front of you is the VIP state room. All new teak flooring has been installed in these areas, and this room accommodates two guests in double beds. The state room also features a nice sized closet as well as plenty of storage under the beds.
VIP Stateroom
The engine rooms.
Walking further aft, you go down the main hallway with engine rooms to port and starboard. We always leave the lights on in the engine room for safety, and so our guests can take a peek at the engine rooms.
The Master Suite
Finally, the master is all the way aft in the boat on the lower level. It has a door for privacy, as do all the other staterooms. Walking in to the port side of the boat is a walk-in master closet that is lined with cedar and plenty of room for all baggage and clothes. Handcrafted, curved teak walls sound the room. New teak flooring also extends into the master to give it a warm feel. A powder table is just to the port side followed by copious storage for all your clothes. The master is equipped with a king size walk around bed with all new linens. To starboard side is the master bath with full size shower and head. Marble flooring and new accents add to the feel of the room. More drawers are to the starboard side along with a flatscreen TV. There is plenty of room to spread out in the master suite, and it is truly the highlight of the lower level of the boat.
History of Southern Comfort
Southern Comfort (SoCo) was built by Hatteras Yachts out of New Bern, NC in 1985. At the time Hatteras Yachts was one of the premier yacht builders in the US, and they still are today. Hatteras Yachts builds motor yachts and custom sportfish boats to and beyond 130 feet long. Hatteras Yachts uses only the best wood and craftsmanship for their yachts, and taking a tour through SoCo, you can get a since for how well these yachts are put together and the massive costs to build them. Back in 1985 the cost to build at 61' Hatteras was around one million dollars. That is the equivalent to 2.5 million in today's market. In reality, to build a boat like SoCo today would cost about 3.5 to 4 million dollars with a lot less room than Southern Comfort has.
The Machinery
The machinery aboard Southern Comfort is vast, although most of it is hidden. If you ask Captain Dave, he is usually happy to give you a tour of the behind-the-scenes stuff. SoCo is equipped with 2 Detroit diesels 1271ti. That means they have 12 cylinders each producing about 650hp and twin turbos. That is a lot of iron! The boat holds 1200 gallons of fuel and burns on average about 60gal/hr of fuel. The engines need to be overhauled about every 5000 hours to a tune of about $3000 per cylinder. That's a whopping $72,000 for all cylinders, and that does not include anything else, for example the four turbos! All told one could be looking at well over $100,000 just to do a standard overhaul on the motors.
The boat is propelled by two large twin disk transmissions that turn two 3 inch shafts that are attached to two large 4 bladed props. The boat is also equipped with two 20kw generators to provide power when under way to all the house systems. Southern Comfort is also equipped with a desalinization plant that can produce 2gpm of freshwater to it's 200 gallon fresh water tank. The boat has seven (Yes, Count them. Seven.) air conditioners and heaters to all parts of the boat. A lot of people ask why so much water is pouring out of the boat? Is the boat sinking? The answer is, "No. The boat is not sinking. That is the water for the air conditioning." Boats use sea water to cool AC units, unlike a unit at home that uses a fan on the outside unit.
SoCo is equipped with several types of electrical services. You will notice several large yellow cables attached to the boat. These are the dockside AC service lines. We also have cables and water coming onto the boat. The boat runs off of 240v service and is broken down as needed to 110v service. The large battery banks located on the boat also provide 32v dc service to things like lights and toilets. All and all there are a lot of systems on solo that need constant maintenance and up keep. On average we spend about $30,000 a year maintaining Southern Comfort and its systems.
I have spent the last two years doing a complete overhaul on Southern Comfort. When I bought her, she was not in good shape and many of her systems and exterior had been neglected. Some of the things that have been updated are all of the AC systems and pumps. She has all new furniture in the salon and new hardwood floors on the lower level. All of the heads or toilets have been redone and are operational. Most people don't know, but a marine head is much different than a toilet on land and extra care is needed when using them. The heads have been updated with new tile and marble countertops. All of the linens and soft goods have been up dated within the last year. That's just naming a few of the things that have gone on in the last year, and we continue to maintain and update systems and keep the boat up to date. Most yachts have a projected budget of about 10-15% of the cost of the boat for maintenance. We have exceeded that budget to get Southern Comfort back in line with the rest of our fleet of boats that we operate for tours in the Charleston Harbor. I hope that you find SoCo to be as nice and relaxing as any yacht you would be on. It is our goal to provide our clients the ultimate yacht experience, even if you don't leave the dock.
Parking & Dock Location
Southern Comfort is located at Charleston City Marina on 17 Lockwood Drive in downtown Charleston. When you pull in to the marina, you will first see a gas station and a restaurant. There is a dock just past the restaurant. THIS IS NOT OUR DOCK. There are only 2 main docks at Charleston City Marina. We are on the main dock leading out to the Megadock.
In order to find Southern Comfort, go to the guard booth in the parking lot. (A guard booth is a small house that a person sits in to take tickets and money.) You're laughing, but about 100% of the people I talk to and give directions to end up at St. Bart's Yacht Sales or HMY Yacht Sales at the top of the wrong dock. So, if you end up there and call me and say, "We are here," and you're in front of a blue sign that says HMY Yachts, you're not here. Take a ticket at the guard BOOTH.
Drive straight until the parking lot opens up and a blue/gray yacht club is in front of you. To your right you will see a ten story building that says 33 Ashley Place. Look to your left and you will see the sign that says, "Welcome to Charleston City Marina". You now have arrived!
You can park anywhere, but please be advised, Charleston city only inches above flood at high tide, and the parking lot tends to flood nearby the water. It's best not to park right up by the water. Southern Comfort is located right on the main dock that you are now looking at. Most of the time you can see SoCo from the parking lot. We are the biggest boat on the dock. SoCo is located 3 boats down on the main dock on the right. One of our other charter boats is located directly to the left, a yellow hulled Hatteras called "Hatterass". I also have a sign on the dock that says "Carolina Marine Group". That's how you will know you are here.
Surrounding Area Amenities
The City Marina has several amenities to make your stay more convenient. The Yacht Club is available for anyone who has a yacht club membership. Just show your ID and sign in the book, and you are able to enjoy the lounge and bar area equipped with pool table. Lunch and dinner is also served several days a week at the Yacht Club.
At the entrance to the marina is a gas station the has food, drinks, beer, and wine. It also hosts a selection of products you may need or have forgotten to bring aboard. So, check them out first before you head to the grocery store. Across the way on the second floor, you will find a full liquor store and wine shop with a great selection of wine and spirits. The Marina Variety Store is just in front of the gas station and has one of the best breakfasts in town. They have been serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner for over 40 years. It's a great place to get some local Southern fair. Under the restaurant is Salty Mike's, a local hang out for boaters and the crews of the large yachts that come into port. You will also find many locals playing pool and having a cold one in the Charleston heat. Taking a walk down the Megadock, you get to experience some of the most expensive yachts in the world. The marina is a big location for the large yachts transiting the area and the moving of boats from north to south during the season. The Megadock is just feet away from Southern Comfort. Just down the dock and to the left, our guests are welcome to walk the docks and admire the beauty of these luxury yachts.

The 5 tragic minutes that sank a superyacht
PORTICELLO, Italy — Survivors of a storm that sank a superyacht off Sicily recounted their ordeal to one of the doctors who rushed to their aid, with some saying it took mere minutes for the 180-foot ship to go down.
Dr. Fabio Genco, head of the Palermo Emergency Medical Services, told NBC News on the phone Thursday that he arrived in the seaside village of Porticello before dawn Monday, about an hour after the $40 million Bayesian sank in the violent and sudden storm.
Of the 22 people onboard, 15 survived despite storm conditions and darkness, climbing onto a lifeboat before being rescued by a nearby sailboat. The crew members have made no public statements so far, though some have been interviewed by investigators.
“They told me that it was all dark, that the yacht hoisted itself up and then went down,” Genco said, recounting what the survivors told him. “All the objects were falling on them. That’s why I immediately made sure, by asking them questions, if they had any internal injuries,” he said.
It appears they had just minutes to abandon the sinking ship, Genco said.
“They told me that suddenly they found themselves catapulted into the water without even understanding how they had got there,” he said, “And that the whole thing seems to have lasted from 3 to 5 minutes.”
Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, which owns Perini Navi, the Bayesian's shipbuilder, told Sky News that there were no flaws with the design or construction of the yacht. He said their structure and keel made boats like that “unsinkable bodies.”
In an interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, he disavowed responsibility, blaming instead the actions of the crew. “Mistakes were made,” he said.
Genco said one of his colleagues who arrived at the scene before him initially thought that only three people survived, but the coast guard reported there were other survivors and more emergency services were called in.
When Genco arrived, he found scenes of panic and despair.
“Unfortunately, we are used to such panic scenes because we are used to the shipwrecks that happen on Lampedusa ,” Genco said, referring to the island southwest of Sicily, where the wreckage of boats carrying migrants on the sea journey from North Africa to Italy are often found .
Six of the passengers were declared missing Monday, and by Thursday, the bodies of five had been recovered from the wreck , some 160 feet underwater.
Among those who survived is Angela Bacares, wife of the British tech mogul Mike Lynch , whose body was recovered Thursday.
Another survivor has been identified as Charlotte Emsley, 35. She told the Italian news agency ANSA that she had momentarily lost hold of her year-old daughter, Sofia, in the water but managed to retrieve her and hold her over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were pulled into safety.
Dr. Domenico Cipolla at the Di Cristina Children’s Hospital in Palermo is also part of a team of medical professionals treating the shipwreck survivors. He told the BBC on Wednesday that Emsley and her daughter, as well as the father of the child, who Cipolla said also survived, are continuing to receive psychological help.
“Psychological support was constant and is constant even today, because basically it is the wounds of the soul that are the most in need of healing in these cases,” Cipolla said.
Genco also told NBC News that he was especially concerned about the child. “She did not understand anything. She was soaking wet and cold,” he said.
Karsten Borner, the Dutch captain of the Sir Robert Baden Powell, a yacht that was anchored near the Bayesian, said by phone Wednesday that he saw a thunderstorm come in at around 4 a.m. local time (10 p.m. ET) Monday, followed by what looked like a waterspout, a type of tornado that forms over water.
The International Centre for Waterspout Research noted on X that there was a “waterspout outbreak” off Italy on Monday, the day the Bayesian sank.
“I turned on the engine and made maneuvers so that we wouldn’t collide with the Bayesian, which was anchored about 100 meters from us,” Borner said. “Then all of a sudden it disappeared. Then the wind calmed down, we looked around and saw a red flare.”
Borner said he got into his boat’s tender and saw a life raft with 15 people on it. Members of the crew were administering first aid.
“I don’t know why it sank so quickly, but it may have something to do with the mast which was incredibly long,” he said. Questions have been raised about whether the mast was to blame for the accident as tall masts, even with the sails down, have more surface area exposed to the wind, which can contribute to tipping a vessel in a storm.
The CCTV footage that emerged Tuesday showed the yacht’s 250-foot mast, believed to be one of the tallest aluminum sailing masts in the world, lashed by the storm as it appears to tilt to one side before disappearing.

Coroner IDs victims of Saturday’s early-morning N. Charleston crash
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - The Charleston County Coroner has identified the victims of a crash between a car and a cement truck.
Jashon Singleton, 22, of Orangeburg and L. Jordan Jones, 20, of North Charleston, died from the injuries they sustained in the crash.
Department spokesman Harve Jacobs said officers responded to the area of Ashley Phosphate Road and Peppermill Parkway around 3:30 a.m. Saturday regarding the crash.
Singleton and Jones, both of whom were inside the car, were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.
The North Charleston Police Department’s Traffic Unit and the Charleston County Coroner are investigating.

Morgan Stanley Chief Jonathan Bloomer Also On Sunken Bayesian Yacht With Michael Lynch

The chairman of Morgan Stanley International was reportedly among the six missing people—including UK tech mogul Michael Lynch— after the 184-foot luxury sailing yacht Bayesian sank in rough seas near Sicily early Monday morning, according to new reports.
Italian emergency services headed out to sea towards the area off the Sicilian coast on Tuesday, ... [+] Aug. 20, 2024.
Lynch , a British tech entrepreneur and one-time billionaire, and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah Lynch are confirmed to be among those still missing after the ship sank (his wife, Angela Bacares, was rescued).
Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of the Morgan Stanley International bank and insurance company Hiscox, is also reportedly among the missing along with his wife, Judy.
Authorities on Monday told the BBC the missing people are presumed to still be inside the boat, and rescue operations resumed Tuesday morning.
The vessel had 22 people on board — 10 crew and 12 passengers — including people from the United States, Britain and Canada, when it overturned at around 5 a.m. Monday, according to the Italian coast guard.
Fifteen people were rescued from the vessel (including a 1-year-old girl), one person was found dead and six, including two Americans , remain missing, according to multiple reports.
Local media reported the person who died was a member of the crew, thought to be the yacht’s chef .

Who Are The Missing People Aboard The Bayesian Yacht?
Lynch, 59, and his daughter were the first to be reported as among the missing. Lynch's lawyer Chris Morvillo, a former assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, has also not been found, nor has his wife and jewelry designer Neda Morvillo. Bloomer, 70, a close friend of Lynch's, is also missing along with his wife, Judy.
Key Background
The Bayesian was anchored near the port of Porticello overnight Sunday when a harsh storm hit the coast that included a " waterspout ," a tornado-like swirling column of air and water. The ship tipped over and quickly was drug underwater by its massive mast —it had the tallest aluminum mast in the world at 246 feet. Of the 15 people rescued in the aftermath, eight were treated at a local hospital.
Lynch was acquitted in a fraud trial in June after he was accused by Hewlett-Packard of artificially inflating the value of Autonomy before HP bought it for more than $11 billion in 2011. HP wrote off $8.8 million of Autonomy's value within a year of buying the company. Today, The Times estimates Lynch has a net worth of £500 million. He "had a lot of pride" in his yacht, a member of his staff told the U.K. paper, and business filings show the boat is legally owned by his wife, Bacares.
Surprising Fact: Lynch's Co-Defendant Stephen Chamberlain Died The Same Weekend
Stephen Chamberlain, who was acquitted in the same trial as Lynch in June, died hours after news broke of Lynch's disappearance. Chamberlain was hit by a car while jogging in England on Saturday morning and was put on life support before his death was announced late Monday, the Guardian reported . Lynch and Chamberlain were both indicted for conspiracy and wire fraud in the sale of Autonomy to HP before being acquitted.
What To Watch For
An ongoing search operation includes divers attempting to search the vessel, now sitting 160 feet below sea level, as well as rescue boats and helicopters, according to CNN .
$215,000. That's the cost to charter the Bayesian, a single-mast sailing vessel, for one week .
Crucial Quote
“She told me that while they were sleeping, at a certain point the yacht overturned due to the tornado, and they found themselves in the water,” Dr. Domenico Cipolla, head of the emergency room at the pediatric hospital in Palermo, Italy, told The Times . “Some of them immediately managed to get onto the lifeboat. And some, evidently, didn’t make it.”
