AirYacht reveals radical 52m airship-yacht crossover concept

Flying yachts, once the stuff of our wildest, most outlandish dreams, are slowly inching closer to a reality. As the industry prepares for the 2022 Superyacht Design Festival , BOAT catches up with  Guillaume Hoddé, co-founder of AirYacht, and Franck Darnet, the yacht's designer, to learn more about an exciting concept that's set to take to the skies in 2026...

Swiss company AirYacht has unveiled a radical new concept that marries the flying power of an airship with the luxury amenities of a superyacht.

Capable of flying between 100 to 3,000 metres above the ground with an autonomous cruising time of around one week, the AirYacht's groundbreaking design is composed of two separate modules: a 200-metre helium-filled airship attached to an ultra-lightweight all-carbon 52-metre superyacht residence.

The three-storey residence can be landed in its entirety or it can deploy a 12-person elevator to allow guests to disembark for a quick stopover.

Each module has its own complement of crew - the airship will have a crew of three and the residence will have a crew of 12.

The AirYacht is the brainchild of Guillaume Hoddé and Matthieu Ozanne, who founded the company in 2017 and enlisted the design expertise of Franck Darnet , who most recently worked on the exteriors of 63.8 metre Atomic . Born in Nantes and immersed in the world of Vendée Globe racing boats, Darnet has a masterful knowledge of "weight performance" technology that makes him uniquely suited to the challenges of airborne yachts.

The residence will have the same layout as a superyacht, with three decks, 750 square metres of indoor space and amenities including a gym, sauna, swimming pool and touch and go helipad.

Accommodation is provided for between ten and 12 guests in a five or six-cabin layout. Terraces, which can be used while the AirYacht is both underway and stationary, flank the starboard and port sides and there is an additional 120 square metre terrace-style lounge on the aft.

Aerodynamic shape and low weight are crucial to the design of the AirYacht. In order to keep the vessel as lightweight as possible, the residence component won’t be fitted with engines.

This creates additional space and increased flexibility to tailor the interior layout, while also allowing the residence to be built at AirYachts’ own facility without the need for a shoreside shipyard. When the residence is detached and on water, it will be towed by its tenders.

The AirYacht aims to give passengers the freedom to roam anywhere in the world, from lakes and seas to deserts and mountains. “On a normal superyacht you have to stay at sea. You can’t cross a hill or a mountain,” said Franck Darnet. “Most of the beautiful things that you see on our planet - some of them are next to the shore [...] but a lot of them are inland.”

In order to conceptualise the residence, Darnet had to rethink various different aspects of design. To this end, the crew quarters are in the forward upper part of the residence - in the section that ‘plugs’ into the airship - in order to give the crew to access the airship module.

The AirYacht also features large sections of glazing in the hull that allows passengers to look down, “because the most spectacular things that exist when you are flying are on the floor,” said Darnet.

While the AirYacht will be able to fly at dizzying heights of around 3,000 metres, the vessel is designed to cruise at heights of between 100 and 200 metres to allow for crystal-clear views of the world unfolding below.

The AirYacht will require ‘early adopters’ for it to take off - both literally and figuratively. “This isn’t a new ship, or a new yacht or new plane. This is a completely new thing,” said Guillaume Hoddé, co-founder of AirYacht. ‘New concept, new design. It’s like a dream.”

Currently, the AirYacht is powered by hybrid technology. “In ten years, we hope to have a full hydrogen version,” added Hoddé.

The first AirYacht will be able to achieve top speeds of 50 knots and the first unit is due for completion in 2026.

Guillaume Hoddé will be attending the 2022 Superyacht Design Festival to shed more light on the AirYacht and discuss the future of flying-focused yacht designs. The event will be held in Milan from 22-24 June. Tickets are still available to purchase .

The redesigned lounge will have about 8,600 square feet of livable space that can accommodate 10 to 40 guests, depending on the configuration. The company is looking to sell its airships to different operators around the world, who can then specify the interior layouts.

The company has fabricated prototypes for many subsystems, says Hoddé, with the first full-scale prototype serving as the first airship. He declined to specify when the full-scale version would be ready, but initial flight tests are planned for 2026, and after modifications, it should be commercially available two years later. It will be operated with hybrid propulsion (with the goal of running on emissions-free hydrogen power by 2030) capable of a maximum altitude of about 10,000 feet, with the capacity to remain fixed in one place so guests can enjoy prolonged views of specific areas. It is designed to remain autonomous for a week but a top speed of 50 knots means it can cover long distances.

AirYacht floating Airship

AirYacht’s newly designed elevator allows 12 passengers to disembark at a time, so the airship can do scheduled events while afloat. The open design of the interior is intended to promote social interaction between guests, with dining areas, two bars, and multiple spots to take in aerial views. But guests will also have privacy in the spacious ensuite bedrooms. The ship is designed to accommodate a 12-person crew and three pilots.

The AirYacht (not to be confused with Lazzarini’s bonkers flying superyacht concept of the same name) is not without competitors. Airlander 10 airships from Hybrid Air Vehicles (HAV) are also designed for the tourism market. The U.K. company expects the airship to be certified in 2026. It will be able to carry approximately 130 people and cruise between 50 and 70 knots. It also has a luxury configuration with large suites and fewer guests.

Israel-based Atlas LTA Advanced Technology is also touting its long-range Atlant 30, which accommodates 20 passengers across 10 suites. Its design team says it will be ready to fly in 2026.

Google cofounder Sergey Brin’s LTA (Lighter Than Air) Research outfit is also moving ahead with its Pathfinder airships, though it’s not clear if it will have passenger-carrying capacities.

“Pathfinder is a case where someone is willing to take a risk and has all the necessary capital,” says Brandon Buerge, an associate professor with the Department of Aerospace Engineering at Wichita State University and veteran of three airship programs. If Pathfinder is successful, Buerge told Robb Report , it could mean sizable investments in the sector for applications such as cargo and regional travel.

Farallon Islands wildlife research is in trouble. What it means for marine science

The wild and remote Farallon Islands, 27 miles off the coast of San Francisco, offer daily proof of nature’s ebbs and flows.

The changes, unseen by most, are dramatic. California sea lions have moved here from southern California. Whales are cruising by earlier in the spring. Sharks have changed their dining preferences. Seabirds, once nearly gone, are now abundant, filling the air with shrieks, songs and stinky poop perfume.

How do we know this? Because people are counting animals — every day. For 56 years, biologists with the nonprofit Point Blue Conservation Science have braved wind, fog and isolation at the 211-acre National Wildlife Refuge to build a rich wildlife database.

But now that’s in peril.

“The Service is in a constrained budget environment, and we’re working to make judicious use of our resources,” said USFWS’s spokeswoman Jackie D’Almeida. The refuge costs the federal government about $600,000 a year to operate; of that, $300,000 supported Point Blue. There is a $8 million backlog in deferred maintenance, she said.

The loss means that Point Blue will no longer be able to maintain a year-round presence, so the islands would be unattended in the fall and winter, said Jaime Jahncke, who directs Point Blue’s California Current Group.

Several crucial long-term datasets will be discontinued, he said. There will be smaller scientific teams, so fewer species can be monitored. Not as many young scientists will be trained. And when the islands are unstaffed, they could be damaged by trespassers.

Research by the Petaluma-based Point Blue has led to several key environmental policy reforms, such as the 1987 gill-netting prohibition aimed at protecting seabirds from drowning, the 1993 legal protection of white sharks, and the creation of three California Marine Protected Areas around the islands in 2010. Its findings triggered the removal of invasive cats and rabbits, leading to the recovery of birds called Rhinoceros Auklets.

Its work also informs day-to-day management decisions; for instance, the group’s documentation of whales is used to alert ships, implement speed limits and set dates for crab fishing.

“When monitoring goes away, the ability to make science-based protections also goes away,” said Point Blue spokesman Zachary Warnow.

A longtime partner of USFWS, Point Blue now will be forced to depend exclusively on private donations from foundations and individuals. They worry that the loss of federal funding will make it harder to secure private donations. The $300,000 in federal funding, which represented about a third of the group’s budget on the islands, helped anchor the research effort.

Saw-toothed crags, the Farallon Islands are uninhabited except for the field research station on Southeast Farallon Island, with no fresh water. About every two weeks, scientists are supplied with food and supplies. Permits to go ashore are rarely granted.

Surrounded by strong cold currents and blooming clouds of krill and fish, the Farallon Refuge has been dubbed “California’s Galapagos” because it shelters a huge range of animal and plant life, including endangered and threatened species. It hosts the largest colony of nesting seabirds in the continental U.S. outside of Alaska.

It’s a world-renowned stopover site for unique vagrant birds, lost or blown off course. Last month, researchers reported the Asian cerulean Blue Rock Thrush, only the second known sighting of the bird in the United States.

On Friday, scientists spotted a rare Nazca Booby, a species that breeds in the Galapagos Islands. The Nazca Booby is very rare this far north, but occurrences are increasing.

After breeding populations of seabirds called Cassin’s Auklets suffered a worrisome decline, Point Blue researchers erected subdivisions of nest boxes, which act as artificial burrows, to monitor individual birds in a controlled way.

“We’re studying occupancy, trying to answer the question: Are the birds in the boxes the same birds that came five or ten years ago?” said Point Blue biologist Amanda Spears.

The Farallon Islands refuge isn’t alone in facing a funding crisis. The entire National Wildlife Refuge System, the nation’s largest network of lands and waters dedicated to wildlife conservation, is reducing essential services.

Rising costs are eating into minor increases in appropriations, causing an effective decline in its budget, according to federal officials. In 2010, the Refuge System received about $765 million in inflation-adjusted dollars; last year’s budget was $527 million.

Meanwhile, the refuge system has grown. About 18 new refuge units and hundreds of millions of acres of marine national monuments have been added to the nation’s existing 571 refuges, as well as new services, such as the Urban Wildlife Conservation Program.

Without enough money, no national wildlife refuge is fully staffed, and more than half have no staff on-site, so they are closed to the public and completely unmanaged, according to the advocacy group National Wildlife Refuge Association. There aren’t enough law enforcement officers; some officers are covering entire states. Many volunteer programs are being cut back or entirely eliminated due to a lack of supervision from staff.

“Over the past twenty years, the Service’s capacity has eroded significantly, while at the same time costs and workloads have increased, and challenges to wildlife conservation have become more complex,” said Martha Williams, director of USFW, in a budget request to a the House Committee on Natural Resources, Subcommittee on Water, Wildlife, and Fisheries on May 16.

“These challenging budgets have required us to pull back on important partnerships and conservation work,” she said.

Farallon Islands National Wildlife Refuge manager Gerry McChesney mourned the potential loss of Point Blue, saying that the nonprofit’s scientists, volunteers and donors have helped prop up the federal effort. While the USFWS has legal responsibility for the refuge at the islands also known as the Farallones, he explained, Point Blue plays the lead role in day-to-day refuge management and research.

“The Farallones are a living laboratory, and you can’t look at the effects of climate change from studying something for just a year or two,” said McChesney. “You have to study it year after year after year — and you can’t stop.”

“The reality,” he said, “is that we couldn’t manage this place without them.”

Coast Guard rescues 8 clinging to cooler after boat capsizes off Boca Grande, Florida coast

The U.S. Coast Guard rescued 7 adults and one child Saturday after the 28-foot boat they were on capsized 36 miles west of Boca Grande, off the Southwest Florida coast.

According to the Coast Guard , the boaters sent a distress call reporting their boat was sinking and activated an emergency position indicating radio beacon.

A Coast Guard Jayhawk helicopter was dispatched and zeroed in on the signal of one of the boaters' personal locator beacons, spotted the device's strobe lights and found all eight wearing life jackets while clinging to a cooler.

The aircrew hoisted the boaters from the water onto the helicopter and took them to emergency medical services at the Venice Municipal Airport. No injuries were reported, according to the Coast Guard.

"The boaters in distress carried close to every piece of lifesaving equipment we encourage the public to carry onboard their vessel,” U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Santiago Gomez said .

“Life jackets, an EPIRB, a PLB, visual signaling devices and a marine grade radio with VHF-FM channel 16 improve our Coast Guard crews’ abilities to locate mariners in distress and increase the chances of a positive outcome to bring them safely home. Today marks the beginning of the 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season , and these safe boating practices make a difference year-round.”

80-foot luxury yacht sinks off Florida coast 1 week earlier

Two people were rescued off the Florida coast one week earlier, when the 80-foot yacht they were on sank 3 miles off the St. Augustine Beach coast May 26.

The $1 million luxury vessel reportedly struck a dredge pipe piling and began taking on water.

One person was injured and the boat's owner will be responsible for arranging salvage.

Where is Boca Grande, Florida?

Boca Grande is an affluent coastal community on Gasparilla Island, northwest of Fort Myers in the Gulf of Mexico.

It sits just north of the barrier island of Cayo Costa, where Hurricane Ian made landfall on Sept. 28, 2022.

Boca Grande is known for its white sand beaches , turquoise waters, fishing and state parks.

Boating accidents in Florida

Florida led the nation in registered boats , with 1,035,911 registered in 2023, according to a Florida Fish and Wildlife report.

Collisions with fixed objects were named as the leading cause in 659 boating accidents reported in Florida in 2023. The accidents resulted in 56 fatalities.

More recently, 15-year-old  Ella Riley Adler was struck and killed by a boat in a hit-and-run  while wakeboarding in Key Biscayne on May 11, 2024.

The  driver of the boat was later identified as 78-year-old Carlos Guillermo Alonso , of Coral Gables. Alonso's attorney told USA TODAY he did not know he struck anyone on the water.

Rupert Murdoch Marries for the Fifth Time

Mr. Murdoch, the 93-year-old media mogul, married Elena Zhukova, a retired molecular biologist, Saturday at Moraga, his Bel Air vineyard estate in Los Angeles.

Rupert Murdoch, dressed in a black suit, hugs Elena Zhukova, his wife, who is carrying a bouquet of white flowers and wearing an off-the-shoulder white dress. Behind them are potted plants and greenery surrounding the windows of a house.

By Tammy LaGorce

Rupert Murdoch, who retired from the boards of Fox and News Corporation last year , walked down an outdoor aisle under blue skies to exchange vows on Saturday with Elena Zhukova, his fifth bride, at Moraga, his Tuscan-style vineyard estate in the hills of the Bel Air neighborhood of Los Angeles.

Ms. Zhukova, 67, carried a bouquet of white flowers and wore an ankle-length, off-the-shoulder white dress with a square neckline, reportedly designed by the London-based designer Emilia Wickstead ; Mr. Murdoch, 93, wore a dark suit with sneakers. Notable guests caught by paparazzi on the way into the ceremony included Robert K. Kraft, the owner of the New England Patriots, and Robert Thomson, the chief executive of News Corp.

The couple met through Mr. Murdoch’s third wife, Wendi Deng, according to The Daily Mail , which first reported their relationship last summer. Ms. Zhukova is a retired molecular biologist who immigrated to the United States from Moscow in 1991, just months before the Soviet Union collapsed. She was previously married to Alexander Zhukov, the billionaire energy investor.

There have been few public details about the couple’s courtship, with representatives for Mr. Murdoch staying mum, but The Daily Mail reported that shortly after meeting, Mr. Murdoch and Ms. Zhukova spent weeks vacationing together in the Mediterranean aboard the Christina O, a yacht that once belonged to Aristotle Onassis. Their engagement was announced in March.

Mr. Murdoch’s fifth marriage comes after a called-off engagement to Ann Lesley Smith, who is a retired dental hygienist and a conservative radio host. Last spring, he proposed to Ms. Smith but broke off the engagement after less than a month.

Ms. Zhukova’s marital history is less well documented. She met her first husband, Mr. Zhukov, now a British citizen, when both were students in the Soviet Union. Their marriage, during which they had a daughter, the entrepreneur and socialite Dasha Zhukova , lasted three years, according to The New Yorker.

A first walk down the aisle for Mr. Murdoch came in 1956, when he married Patricia Booker, a former flight attendant and model. They had a daughter, Prudence, before divorcing in 1967.

That same year, he married his second wife, Anna Maria Torv, then a journalist at one of his Australian newspapers. That union lasted 32 years, and they had three children: Elisabeth, Lachlan and James. All have worked for their father’s global empire; last year, Lachlan Murdoch was named Mr. Murdoch’s sole successor, becoming responsible for steering the media company his father started building from a small local newspaper in his native Australia 70 years ago. Mr. Murdoch maintains an emeritus role.

In 1999, when Mr. Murdoch and Ms. Torv divorced, he and his third wife, Ms. Deng, a television executive born in China, married. They had two daughters, Grace and Chloe, and divorced in 2013. He met Jerry Hall, who is a model, actress and one of Mick Jagger’s former wives, the same year. They married in 2016 and had no children together before divorcing in 2022 .

Mr. Murdoch and his family have a net worth of nearly $20 billion, according to Forbes . His publicly traded company News Corp owns a portfolio of news outlets including The Wall Street Journal, The New York Post, The Times of London and Sky News Australia, as well as the book publisher HarperCollins. According to The Cut , Ms. Deng and Ms. Hall both signed prenuptial agreements before marrying Mr. Murdoch.

Moraga, the wedding venue, is where Mr. Murdoch first hatched his 2019 deal to sell most of Fox’s movie studio, FX and National Geographic to Disney. He bought the estate in 2013 for a reported $29.5 million . Among its former owners is the director Victor Fleming, whose credits include “The Wizard of Oz” and “ Gone With the Wind.”

When he retired in September, Mr. Murdoch told employees in a letter that for his entire professional life he had been engaged daily with news and ideas. “That will not change,” he wrote. “But the time is right for me to take on different roles.”

An earlier version of this article erroneously included a media organization among News Corp’s portfolio of businesses. Fox News is part of Fox Corporation, not News Corp.

Which airlines offer key benefits for troops? There’s a chart for that

air yacht imo

A new government tool aims to clarify the benefits troops and their families can receive from America’s 10 largest airlines to make their air travel easier.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s “Support Our Troops” dashboard offers a chart comparing each airline’s policies on fee waivers, free luggage and refunds for military families during personal travel , or when travel plans change because of a military order. Four companies — Allegiant Air, Frontier Airlines, Southwest Airlines and Spirit Airlines — offer some combination of those perks, according to the chart.

Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Hawaiian Airlines, JetBlue Airways and United Airlines are also included in the roundup but have not committed to provide current troops and their families with additional benefits.

In April, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg sent a letter to the CEOs of these 10 largest airlines, urging them to improve their military travel benefits and publicize them more effectively.

The department “appreciates that carriers currently provide active duty service members and their families various military travel benefits,” Buttigieg wrote. “However, these benefits are not consistently detailed in carriers’ public-facing customer service plans, resulting in many service members being unaware of them.”

The travel benefits “often do not fully address the needs of service members who may need to cancel or change personal travel plans due to military directives,” Buttigieg added.

Following the letter, Spirit, Allegiant and Frontier stepped up their existing commitments to troops and families, according to the Department of Transportation.

Six others — Alaska, American, Delta, Hawaiian, JetBlue and United — declined to make “clear and enforceable” promises of extra benefits, the department said.

Airlines are required to stick to the benefits outlined in their customer service plans, including commitments to care for service members and their families. The department pledges to hold airlines accountable if they fail to do so.

To build the new “Support Our Troops” dashboard, DOT and Pentagon officials collaborated to evaluate airlines on four basic commitments the government believes are the top priorities for troops and families on the go:

  • Whether they waive cancellation fees and ensure full refunds for service members and accompanying family members who cancel travel plans because of a military order or directive (documentation may be required). Three airlines make this commitment.
  • Whether they waive change fees for service members and accompanying family members who reschedule flights because of a military order or directive (documentation may be required). Four airlines make this commitment.
  • Whether they offer at least one free standard carry-on and at least two free standard checked bags for service members and their accompanying spouse and children, with appropriate identification such as a valid military ID. Four airlines make this commitment.
  • Whether they provide the lowest fare for a flight for immediate family members to visit service members recently injured in the line of duty, with supporting documentation. Two airlines make this commitment.

Two airlines — Allegiant and Spirit — pledge to provide all four benefits.

Airlines might offer additional perks to troops and their families, but for those benefits to be reflected on the dashboard, the airlines are required to make those commitments in their customer service plan and provide them to all service members, the department said in a release.

The dashboard applies to current members of the military who are serving or may be called to serve, and who hold a current military ID. That includes members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Space Force, Coast Guard, National Guard and reserve components; cadets of the military academies and the Merchant Marine Academy; the U.S. Public Health Service’s Commissioned Corps and Ready Reserve Corps; and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s officer corps.

More information is available on the airlines’ websites or by contacting customer service agents.

The military community can also compare prices and snag discounts on upcoming travel through the Defense Department’s American Forces Travel website , which offers deals on flights, hotels, rental cars, cruises and travel packages, and event tickets.
