The Cantius line debuted in 2011 with the launch of the 48 Cantius, and since then the legend has done nothing but grow. This series represents Cruisers Yachts’ dedication to building yachts that are comfortable, safe, and perfect for family outings or entertaining. The Cantius line currently ranges from the 39 EC up to the 60 Fly.

They are all built at Cruisers Yachts’ newly acquired, state-of-the-art Pulaski, Wisconsin, facility, which can handle boats up to 73 feet in length. Cantius models stand out for their interior volume, which is a testament to smart design.

Through the implementation of knowledge gleaned from decades of experience, each Cantius model offers accommodations that are best in class in terms of spaciousness and ergonomics — which outshine the layouts of much larger competitors. Those interiors, when combined with high-level engineering, world-class craftsmanship, and a ride that is second to none, have made Cantius models a favorite among knowledgeable boaters for years.

Cruisers Yachts 54 Cantius

Cruisers Yachts 54 Cantius

My first visit to Cruisers Yachts was in 2008, on the leading edge of the Great Recession. Few companies were tooling up for new production, but thanks to the good-old Midwestern strong work ethic and deferred gratification, Cruisers Yachts remained tough and moved forward, still designing and aggressively building beautiful and smooth-running cruisers for its customers.

Just three years earlier, Volvo Penta had introduced its pod drive, called IPS 1, along with a new line of D series diesel inboard engines. Though they were targeted to express cruisers under 40 feet, by 2008, Lazzara Yachts had incorporated four of them into one of its new yachts. The IPS 2 came next, but it was targeted to still larger vessels.

Now, eight years later, Volvo Penta introduced the D8-IPS800, the center of its full line of 11 models of IPS drives and designed for the sweet spot of 50 to 60 feet.

This new 54 Cantius was powered with dual Volvo Penta D8-IPS800s. Wait a minute — we went from 1, then 2, and now 800?

Jens Bering, the Volvo Penta applications engineer on my test, explained the new enumerations.

“IPS 1s were the originals,” he said in his Danish accent. “Then we came out with the IPS 2s. These new ones fit right in between, but we didn’t want to call them IPS 1.5s, like a firmware update, so we renumbered the series.”

At 600 hp, this new IPS800 fits nearly in the middle of the IPS 260 to 900 hp range.

With that for background, we climbed aboard the 54 Cantius on a glum, chilly day in Florida that would’ve dampened anyone’s enthusiasm for a cruise. But the salon sparkled with décor so bright, the sun was optional.

Cruisers Yachts 54 Cantius

We had a narrow window to test, so we breezed past the broad swim platform and dual boarding stairs. Those offered port and starboard boarding choices to the cockpit seating just three steps above. An oak and charcoal sole, an aft lounge, a mezzanine sink to port and another seat to starboard flanked the wide entry to the salon. We stepped past the starboard buffet and couch, past the portside galley that could be opened to the cockpit by sliding open the glass doors, and past the elevated dining table of rich hardwood.

The helm boasted two large multifunction displays, an Italian helm and, naturally, IPS joystick docking and steering controls. The engines were already warming, and we nudged the 54 out of the slip with the joystick.

The first thing we noticed when jogging the stick was that the engines responded quickly. Sure, the D8 has a midposition turbocharger with dual intake ports, but that couldn’t account for the fast revving of these engines.

“They are supercharged too,” Bering says. “We get plenty of response from the turbos for normal cruising, and superchargers enhance the response to joystick controls in close quarters.”

We could hear them wind up when we jogged the stick smartly in any direction, and the big 54-footer responded as quickly as the engines did to a jog on the stick.

Offshore, we could use the joystick for driving as well. That’s an important update to the system, but one that we would find more enjoyable if the stick was located on an armrest instead of in the middle of the dash. That steady resting spot makes all the difference in the operation of the joystick — and it makes cruising with the stick more comfortable too.

At speed, the electronically controlled power steering integrated with IPS systems made skippering the 54 Cantius a dream. Electronic throttle and shift is as smooth as soft-serve ice cream and so pleasant in its consistent resistance, you can almost taste it.

IPS drives penetrate the hull farther forward than strut and shaft inboard systems, so the vessel’s thrust is closer to the center of gravity. In the 54 Cantius’ case, the result is that the boat is elevated to plane in a smooth manner without notable or awkward bow rise. And in turns, it comes around comfortably, even in aggressive turns.

Cruisers Yachts 54 Cantius

The compact design of the IPS drive system adds valuable space inside the vessel. As an example, check out the size of the aft master stateroom aboard the 54 Cantius. A flat-panel TV, dual bureaus for dressing, and large, cedar-lined hanging lockers were only outdone in attractiveness by the large head with shower.

The forward stateroom proves equally inviting, and even a third stateroom is enticing.

By the time we returned to the dock, the weather had brightened. That’s when you’d want to slide the doors aside, fully opening the salon and galley to the cockpit seating. Exit was easy via the port or starboard steps to the platform or, if the dock is high, you could also step over from the cockpit to the dock.

There are any number of premium yacht builders with a 50-something, but Regal ‘s 53 is one we’d compare if considering the 54 Cantius for purchase. The Regal 53 can likewise be powered with the Volvo Penta D8 and IPS800s. But don’t rely solely on our word. Contact Cruisers Yachts and schedule a showing — and a sea trial — and see for yourself.

Cruisers 54 Cantius

Looking for an express cruiser with wind-in-your hair performance? Ruth Pearl, a 2019 Cruisers Yachts 54 Cantius, just entered the market with a sale price just shy of $1.1 million.

With a displacement of 45,000 pounds, twin Volvo Penta D8 IPS800 diesel engines with a 1,200 combined horsepower, will quickly push this yacht up to a max speed of 37 knots. At a 25-knot cruising speed, range is a reported 220 nautical miles. A Seakeeper SK6 keeps the Ruth Pearl stable as a table underway.

Well-built and thoughtfully designed, the Cruisers 54 Cantius should fit into many boating lifestyles — seamlessly. The 54 Cantius’s layout flows smoothly from the cockpit with settee (and retractable sunshade) past the galley, which opens to the cockpit, to the entertaining area with dinette and couch, to the helm, as reported in Yachting .

Cruisers 54 Cantius

Cruiser Yachts 54 Cantius were produced from 2015 to 2022 with CE certified class B fiberglass hulls, allowing Ruth Pearl to travel off the coast within a 200-mile range of the shoreline.

Galati Yacht Sales stated that over $70k was spent this year on the Ruth Pearl , this boat shows like new, and is ready for its new owners to enjoy. If you are in the market for a beautiful express yacht this boat is worth the time to come step foot on, images don’t do her justice. Upgrades from the summer of 2023 include the following:

  • Engine service
  • Pod service
  • Generator service
  • Fresh bottom job
  • Upgraded sea-strainer system
  • Custom AC pump/mount
  • Air Conditioning units fully serviced
  • Hull & topside full compound & polish

Cruisers 54 Cantius

Climb aboard the Ruth Pearl and up a few steps from the swim platform to the aft cockpit where guests can be seated on the U-shaped settee with table, or belly up to the aft-galley bar on two white padded stools. The cockpit is very spacious for a small party while cruising, but if the sun becomes an issue, extend the electric awning to add shade. Take a dive off the swim platform, or an onshore excursion to a private beach for lunch in a 10’5″ tender mounted on a lift attached to the swim platform. Feel like you need a little rinsing off after a swim? There is an outdoor shower to keep guests from having to enter the lower deck heads. Owners have access to an electric grill and ice maker in the cockpit with the aft-galley just through a set of sliding glass doors.

The galley is centrally located between the cockpit and salon, allowing owners to easily entertain guests in both areas. Lock open the sliding glass doors, open a large window pane in the galley and you will have an open-air environment throughout the cockpit, galley and salon. The galley has a built-in microwave, dishwasher, stove, ice maker and expandable table along with a U-shaped gunmetal settee with table in the salon. Windows flanking the salon allow natural light to illuminate the galley, salon and helm. Additional sunlight is available through a sunroof that can be opened above the helm and dining area.

Cruisers 54 Cantius

Rainy evening? Relax in the salon while watching TV on a retractable flat-screen TV with a Bose surround-sound system. No need to head back in, the storm will pass. The salon is laid out in blackened oak and tan oak interior with an amtico sole in walnut and a gunmetal upholstered loveseat. Grab a bottle of wine from the 120v wine captain, open the power sunroof and open a few windows to let the breeze flow through.

The forward helm is located starboard side across from the U-shaped settee with a captain’s chair large enough to seat two. Ruth Pearl was outfitted with the Raymarine electronics package, sonar, 6 kW HD open-array radar, two Axiom XL 16″ displays with remote, joystick remote docking, VHF radio, FLIR and autopilot, ensuring the captain will have a comfortable and safe cruise. Two large windshields as well as large side windows to port and starboard allow the captain a full view of the surroundings.

Cruisers 54 Cantius

Retire in the evening to three staterooms with two heads that will comfortably sleep six. The master stateroom is a carpeted, full-beam suite with a walkaround queen island berth with an upgraded therapeutic foam mattress. Owners will find plenty of stowage in the end tables on each side of the berth, oak cabinets, hanging lockers and in the portside cafe table with under-seat stowage. Comforts include opening porthole, blinds, mirrors and a private en-suite head with fully enclosed shower and electric toilet. The VIP stateroom has a queen berth with an upgraded therapeutic mattress, oak cabinetry, hanging lockers and private access to the guest head. Guest stateroom has twin-sized berths, oak cabinetry and shared access to the guest head.

Where is Ruth Pearl located? The yacht is currently lying in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Tested: Cruisers 54 Cantius

Crusiers Yachts 54 Cantius

An eye-catching exterior profile balances the well-proportioned hull length, house height and freeboard. Double-paned windshield and large salon windows enhance visibility while flooding the interior with ambient light. Hull side windows add flair.

Full-length side rails offer handholds, and non-skid decking minimizes slippage heading to the foredeck and its dual reclining sun pads and anchor gear.

In the aft cockpit, there’s a wraparound U-shaped settee served by a double-post wood table and shielded by a retractable awning built into the hardtop. Ample room beneath allows storage of fenders, lines and more. Twin barstools forward and to port sidle up to the aft window. Guests can be part of any conversation, or just enjoy a cocktail at the bar.

Thanks to a simple, modular approach, functional areas can be separated without a feeling of isolation. For example, the indoor and outdoor areas of the main deck are blended when you fold back the glass door/wall combo unit and lower the power actuated window between the aft cockpit and main cabin. The galley is aft to port, centralizing the food, meal prep and serving location. It also keeps the chef in the middle of the action when guests are spread fore and aft.

Thanks to the U-shaped galley design, appliances are central to the operation. Our test boat, Hull No. 1 of the 54 Cantius line, included an under-counter Cuisinart microwave/convection oven, drawer-style Vitrifrigo fridge/freezer, recessed Whale two-burner flat cooktop with cover, and double stainless-steel sinks with designer multi-angle faucet. Across, to starboard, a nook houses a third fridge/freezer drawer unit, along with a Fisher & Paykel dishwasher unit.

Comfort Abounds To port is a U-shaped settee and wood table with foldout leafs and wood-finished pedestal. Opposite sits a sofa. Both have plush cushions. Be surrounded in sound by the Polk Soundbar 5000 speakers, which give crisp tone to the TV and audio devices throughout the salon. Additional features include a glass-paneled sunroof with shade, opening side windows with blinds, overhead lighting, black oak Amtico flooring and Tay oak wood on walls.

Ergonomically designed for comfort, the starboard helm station has a doublewide Stidd seat to accommodate the captain and a guest navigator. Utilizing the Volvo Glass Cockpit system with Raymarine electronics in dual 12-inch displays creates a sleek dash with integrated engine and navigation controls. Touchscreen, pinch-to-zoom and pushbuttons make easy work out of managing the systems. Note that the Volvo joystick control is located left, allowing the operator to stand centerline while backing.

The foyer to the staterooms below includes an atrium that’s bright and open, courtesy of a cutaway above and side windows. A credenza with optional wine chiller is to port, and across is a sofa; this layout creates a cozy hideaway from the main deck, or the space can be converted for a third stateroom with upper/lower bunks.

Forward is the VIP cabin with centerline queen berth, hull windows, locker and TV. A hatch and four skylights above add illumination and a feeling of space. A great idea is the separate shower room on one side of the VIP, with the shared head opposite.

Mid-ship is the full-beam master suite, lavishly appointed with a king berth, walk-in closet and portside credenza. Cruisers created a desk with facing seats that works as a breakfast nook, desk or vanity on one side and storage on the other, as the tops lift to uncover each function. Side windows open, allowing for cross ventilation.

Positive Feedback Noticed immediately was the amount of space to move about the engine room. Even with a pair of Volvo Penta IPS 950 blocks producing 725 horsepower, there’s room to get up, over and around the engines thanks to the 6-feet of headroom. Fuel filters, Cummins Onan generator and pod drives are easily accessible and visible to spot any issues.

Running the numbers, our test boat matched spot-on with what the manufacturer stated on the spec sheet. At 1200 RPM, the yacht runs up to 10.5 mph. Step it up to 1800 RPM for 25 mph. Top end was 42 mph at wide-open throttle (2550 RPM). Not bad for a 43,000-pound fiberglass platform.

A balanced design, attention to detail and smart utilization of space make the Cruisers Yachts 54 Cantius a serious contender for your yachting desires.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

cruisers yachts 54 cantius

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

cruisers yachts 54 cantius

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

cruisers yachts 54 cantius

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

cruisers yachts 54 cantius

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

cruisers yachts 54 cantius

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

cruisers yachts 54 cantius

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

cruisers yachts 54 cantius

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

Gagarin cup (khl) finals:  atlant moscow oblast vs. salavat yulaev ufa.

Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final.  While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut.  Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so.  But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd.

This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime.  Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30).  Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date.  Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles:  Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30.  In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans:  Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.

For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship.  The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize.  The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it.  Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that.

The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth.  There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat.  Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role.

I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games.  They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL.  They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.

  • Atlant @ Ufa, Friday Apr 8 (3:00 PM CET/10:00 PM EST)
  • Atlant @ Ufa, Sunday Apr 10 (1:00 PM CET/8:00 AM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Tuesday Apr 12 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Thursday Apr 14 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)

Games 5-7 are as yet unscheduled, but every second day is the KHL standard, so expect Game 5 to be on Saturday, like an early start.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.
