Chronic Sailing

Boat Delivery

Interested in hiring a professional boat captain and crew to deliver your personal yacht? Are you a broker and need one moved for a survey or for closing? Want your boat relocated to your future vacation destination but don’t have the time to take her yourself? Wanna get a little offshore experience on your yacht while moving her around the coast? Whatever the reason, Chronic Sailing can help!

Captain Owen and his delivery crew have years of experience and tens of thousands of offshore nautical miles navigating sailing catamarans, mono-hulls and power vessels up and down the Atlantic East Coast of the United States (offshore and on the ICW) and throughout the Bahamas and Caribbean Sea. They focus primarily on catamaran sailboats 38’-50’ and power yachts up to 55’ but can move just about any size vessel wherever she needs to go. Whether it needs to be moved tomorrow or months from now, you can feel comfortable knowing your boat is in qualified hands while being transported around the Chesapeake Bay or across open blue water.

How it Works

Prior to departure, Captain Owen will discuss sailing route options with you. Based on the most recent weather forecast models and your boat’s unique features and limitations, we will devise a plan to safely and quickly move your vessel from alpha to bravo. You’ll discuss the cost of delivery, all terms of insurance and liability during the transit, and be provided an estimate along with written agreement of all terms and conditions.

All offshore deliveries carry state of the art satellite communications to allow you 24/7 instant communication with your boat while she’s underway anywhere. It also allows real time weather GRIBs for storm tracking and general condition updates for the crew to engage early route corrections, optimizing time and safety. All deliveries are assisted from our base manager in Annapolis following weather systems and other real world events that could influence the float plan.

Step by Step Boat Delivery Plan

  • 1 Discuss your boat, her location/destination, potential delivery dates & estimated costs
  • 2 Design a route based on weather predictions
  • 3 File float plan with Chronic Sailing headquarters and owner/broker prior to departure
  • 4 Embark and begin making way with 24/7 weather updates and communication
  • 5 Real time weather routing adjustments while underway
  • 6 Arrival at destination (Full survey & detail cleaning optional)
  • 7 Debrief on trip details, vessel condition, any necessary repairs and handover

Professional Crew for Yacht Delivery

The success of a yacht delivery hinges on the expertise of the crew. At CaptainErik.com, we employ professional captains and crew members to ensure each voyage is executed with precision and care. Here’s a breakdown of our typical crew requirements:

  • Sailboats: For most sailboat deliveries, a yacht delivery Captain plus one crew member (mate or deckhand) is required. For operations running 24 hours a day, we recommend a crew of Captain plus two (mate and deckhand). Larger sailboats over 65 feet or those on extended passages may require additional crew such as stewards or engineers.
  • Powerboats: Generally require a Captain plus one or more crew members, with larger vessels necessitating additional hands.

Transparent Yacht Delivery Rates

We believe in transparency when it comes to our pricing. Our rates are competitive and reflect the high level of service we provide. Here’s a detailed breakdown of our current rates:

  • Captain: $500 per day (rates may vary depending on route difficulty and vessel size)
  • Mates: $300 per day
  • Deckhand: $200 per day
  • Steward: $200 per day
  • Engineer: $250 per day

Provisions and Additional Costs

In addition to crew rates, there are provisions and other costs associated with the delivery:

  • Provisions: $60 per day per person for food and water while onboard.
  • Travel and Other Costs: These include transportation to and from the vessel, fuel costs, dockage fees, transit fees, and port costs. These expenses are borne by the owner.

A deposit is required to cover expected fuel costs and other fees incurred during delivery, and owners must provide a valid credit card for expenses incurred during the voyage.

Detailed Breakdown of Yacht Delivery Costs

To give you an idea of the overall cost, here is an example breakdown:

  • Crew Pay: Based on the number of crew members and the duration of the voyage.
  • Travel Expenses: Transportation costs for the crew to and from the vessel.
  • Provisions: Daily cost of food and water for the crew.
  • Fuel and Other Fees: Fuel costs, dockage fees, transit fees, and port costs.

Actual costs may vary depending on factors such as boat speed and unforeseen circumstances during the voyage. We ensure all expenses are documented and transparent, providing you with a clear and comprehensive overview of the costs involved.

Transport a Sailboat - Costs & How To Ship

Transport a Sailboat: Costs & How To Guide | Life of Sailing

Last Updated by

Daniel Wade

June 15, 2022

Sailboat transport is an essential and very well-established boating service with numerous options.

Sailboats can be transported by single-axle trailers, multi-axle trailers, cargo ships, and occasionally trains. Sailboats can also be transported across an ocean on their own with the help of a hired captain and crew. Costs vary widely based on size and type, and they range from $200 to more than $15,000.

In this article, we’ll cover several of the most common sailboat transportation methods. We’ll cover the details and requirements of each method, along with the required method by sailboat size and type. Additionally, we’ll explore the average costs of each method for a typical production cruising sailboat.

We sourced the information used in this article from sailboat transport agencies along with government towing and transportation guides. We carefully researched pricing to help you get a basic idea of what it’ll cost to transport a sailboat.

Table of contents

‍ Is Transporting a Sailboat Difficult?

It’s not necessarily difficult to transport a sailboat, but it does require care and careful planning. Your responsibilities as the sailboat owner range from trailer maintenance and careful driving to the organization of international logistics. In this article, we’ll discuss ways to streamline the process and make it easier.

Is Sailboat Transport Expensive?

Sailboat transport can be expensive, but it doesn’t have to be. Obviously, moving a small sailboat is relatively cheap in comparison, especially if you already have a truck and a trailer.

The cost of transporting a larger boat is higher, as you’ll probably need to hire a shipping company or a crew.

There are multiple ways to transport a large sailboat, and the more economical method isn’t always immediately evident. Some boats may be cheaper to ship on a specially-designed yacht carrying vessel, while others may be cheaper if you hire a delivery crew.

Pricing varies between boats, locations, and destinations, so it’s essential to research all available methods and request multiple quotes. If you do, you could save thousands on transport and delivery, not to mention insurance costs to protect your vessel from possible damage.

Sailboat Transport Methods

There are several ways to transport a sailboat, and the ideal method depends upon the size and dry weight of the vessel. Dry weight is distinct from displacement, so it’s important to ensure that you have the correct number. Here are the most common ways to transport sailboats short and long distances.

Self Towing

Some sailboats can be towed, though the vehicle, trailer type, and license requirements vary based on size. The smallest and lightest dinghies and pocket cruisers can be towed by most typical cars, provided you have a heavy-duty tow hitch installed.

Larger sailboats, in the 20-foot range and longer, usually need to be towed by a pickup truck or SUV. A half-ton gasoline pickup truck is sufficient for lighter vessels, as long as the dry weight doesn’t exceed the vehicle’s towing capacity.

Also, remember that some automakers determine towing capacity under ideal test conditions, so your truck’s actual towing ability may be slightly lower than its rating.

You’ll have to collapse or remove the mast, boom, and standing rigging of the sailboat and secure it, regardless of its size.

Most trailer sailers can be towed by half-ton or 3/4 ton single rear wheel trucks. Larger sailboats, such as towable coastal cruisers, may require a multi-axle trailer and a gooseneck. This setup is often found with a dually 3/4 ton or 1-ton truck.

The Basics of Towing Rules in the United States

The rules of the road are clear when it comes to towing. With a Class C license (a standard driver’s license), the maximum overall trailer length you can tow is 60 feet. The maximum length of a Class C trailer surface is 53 feet.

Length usually isn’t the issue when it comes to towing sailboats. The maximum width of a class C trailer is 8 ft 6 in, which includes the items on the trailer. The regulations mean that the beam of your boat can’t exceed about 8 feet, give or take a couple of inches.

With a more advanced license or a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), you can tow a much larger trailer and drive a semi-truck. Some larger sailboats with greater beam width can be towed this way, though only if they remain below the maximum height.

Height requirements for trailers vary between 13 ft, 6 inches to 14 ft, depending on the location. This is measured from the ground to the top of the item on the trailer.

Be sure to plan your route carefully if you’re towing a boat with a full keel, as some older overpasses and railroad bridges are much shorter than 13 feet.

Professional Towing Services

It’s usually best to leave the towing to professionals, especially if you’re towing a large boat. Experienced drivers with big rigs and commercial licenses can transport surprisingly large vessels safely but at a cost. The benefit of using a professional service is that you’re taking the risk off your shoulders.

Many professional towing services offer insurance, which is essential. Insurance protects the loading and unloading of the boat and covers any damages that occur en route. For the price, it’s a no-brainer.

In most cases, the tow company will not be able to help you launch your boat. You’re responsible for arranging boat crane services at your destination. It’s best to plan carefully, as you may end up paying more if you make the driver wait too long.

Cost of Professional Sailboat Towing Services

Cost varies widely based on the company, location, and size of the load. Most towing companies have a base fee, a fee of the assessed load, and then a per-mile charge. Some companies have different fee structures.

Companies that offer quotes usually predict a charge of between $500 and $1,000 for typical trips, though it can cost as little as $300 if you have a relatively small boat and it only needs to travel a short distance.

Shipping a Sailboat on a Cargo Ship

Large and small sailboats are frequently sent across oceans via cargo ships. This method is time-tested and relatively cost-effective, though it’s not as straightforward as just sailing the boat across.

Some people hire an agent to arrange shipping, which is the easiest and most reliable way to have a headache-free experience.

Shipping a sailboat by sea is slower than over-the-road transport, and schedules are less flexible. Often, you’ll have to wait for a spot to open up on a specifically-designed yacht carrying ship.

Once the ships are loaded, they set out at predetermined times that might be months ahead of when you booked. The best way to ensure you get a spot on a yacht shipping vessel is to plan well in advance of when you actually need to transport the vessel.

Logistics are the greatest challenge of shipping a boat on a larger ship. If you don’t work with an agent or an accommodating shipping company, you could have to work out the following and more:

  • Transportation to the shipping yard
  • Loading and securing instructions
  • Shipping destination
  • Payments to various services
  • Customs in the destination country (if outside of the U.S.)
  • Taxes and import fees
  • Declarations
  • Inspections
  • Unloading at the destination
  • Transportation from the destination port to the marina

As you can see, there are lots of reasons to hire a professional to manage the minutiae of shipping a sailboat. The last thing you want is to have your boat seized at customs or have it dropped off in an unguarded yard in the wrong location.

Cost to Ship a Sailboat on a Cargo Ship

Shipping costs for ocean-going boat transport are lower than many people expect. A lot of factors are involved, including the size of the boat, its height (from keel to mast top), its displacement, and the distance it needs to be shipped.

The lowest prices you’ll find to ship an average-sized boat are around $3,000 to $5,000. A more typical estimate for an average sailboat is between $6,000 and $10,000. Some vessels and destinations cost upwards of $15,000. Costs tend to increase with the size and distance, and the value of your sailboat also plays a part.

Prices in the yacht shipping industry are competitive, which is why it’s relatively affordable to ship a boat over an ocean. It’s surprisingly popular as well, and there are more than a dozen shipping companies offering long-distance ocean transport specifically for yachts of various sizes.

Hired Delivery

Hired crews for boat delivery is the other way to transport a sailboat over the water. Crew services find a captain and a small professional crew to sail your boat for you.

This is a great option for large boats, as it’s often less expensive and time-consuming than shipping it on a larger vessel.

Hired crew delivery services are offered by companies and experienced individuals. You can even find a trusted friend to crew your boat for you, and they can hire a crew member or two to accompany them for the journey.

While under hire, the crew will be living in your boat. Crew members come from all backgrounds, and many sailors spend a summer or two working for a charter service to make some money or get free transportation to other countries.

Cost to Hire a Delivery Crew

Hired crew delivery costs vary, though the more hands you need, the more it costs. Crews and captains usually charge daily rates for yacht delivery services. A fast sailboat is almost always cheaper to transport than a slow sailboat.

As an example, we’ll use the services of Captain James Lowe , who is a USCG licensed 200-ton Master. As of the writing of this article, Captain James Lowe charges between $350 and $425 per day for his services, depending on the size of the vessel. Deckhands cost $175 per day per person, which is in addition to the Captain’s charges.

These are the base rates, and they’re a good representation of what professional crewed delivery costs. You may find cheaper rates with other groups or individuals, but it’s worth the cost if you want a trustworthy and experienced crew.

Additional charges often include transportation costs (to and from the destinations), fuel costs (for heating, cooking, and motoring), and a deposit is usually required for fuel. These costs are impossible to predict without knowing your specific plans, so it’s best to reach out to Captain James Lowe for a specialized quote.

Hired crew delivery services usually have a minimum crew requirement for different boat sizes and types. In this case, sailboats require a minimum of one deckhand in addition to a captain. Larger sailing vessels of 65 feet or greater require two or more additional deckhands.

Yacht Delivery from Gulfport, MS to Kemah, TX. While on boat delivery from Boston, MA to Middle River on the Chesapeake Bay, on a 41 Cruisers, I received a call from my new client. Tommy had been looking for a captain to help him and a friend move his ‘new to him’ 41DS Hunter from Gulfport, MS to Kemah, TX in the Houston area. After agreeing on a price and date, we were all set to meet in Gulfport to start the delivery.

Check Ride Certification – Insurance Underwriters Evaluation Sign Off by Captain

If your insurance company requested an evaluation and/or training, you can get either (or both) from Captain Dave Subers. New boat owners as well as experienced yachters with new policies are often requested to have a United States Coast Guard Licensed Captain sign off on the yacht owner’s vessel familiarity and operation before the new boat’s insurance policy goes into effect.

How to become a Boat Captain…it’s Easy

Are you a seasoned boater who loves taking friends and family out on the water? Or perhaps while growing up, you spent a lot of time out on the water and being around people who love boating? Do you daydream about nautical charts and make plans for the fun of it? If yes is your answer to any of these, then becoming a charter boat captain may be a suitable profession for you.

Why Hire a Captain to deliver or receive your boat from a Shipping Transport Company

The process all started when the yacht broker contacted Trusted Yacht Delivery to help with a delivery of a 2017 51’ SeaRay Flybridge that needed to go Miami to Freeport Bahamas to be loaded on the ship shipping ship called the Happy Dragon.

Boat Deliveries don’t always go according to Plan

I was recently contacted by a new boat owner to help him move his boat from Sanibel Island on the West Coast of Florida to Jacksonville. In my planning we were going to travel through Fort Myers, and then proceed through the lock system of the Okeechobee waterway. Our trip was planned to go through Lake Okeechobee and then on to Stuart Florida. Unfortunately as we approached the Port Myaca lock, the starboard side engine started to overheat.

Delivery Skippers and Crew

sailboat yacht delivery

What qualifications do you need to get a delivery job?

Many delivery skippers operate on a freelance basis but there are also delivery companies that coordinate deliveries and use a pool of regular skippers and crew. The arrangements concerning payment for deliveries to either skipper or crew will vary greatly from one company or delivery to the next so it is always best to ensure you are clear on what has been agreed prior to committing to anything.

The delivery of a private yacht by a paid or unpaid delivery skipper and crew is not of itself commercial use of the yacht. However, if there are paying passengers on board then the voyage is indeed classified as commercial in which case the vessel, skipper and crew will need to comply with any relevant commercial codes of practice and manning requirements relevant to the flag state under which the vessel is registered.

In the case of commercial passages under the UK codes of practice, the vessel will need to be coded and the skipper will also require a commercial endorsement on their Certificate of Competence. If the yacht is already coded and the only people on board are the delivery skipper and crew then it is likely that the voyage will still be treated as commercial.

The qualifications required to skipper a delivery will depend on where the delivery will take place and also the nature of the passage. However, the skipper will owe a duty of care to the owner of the yacht and, as such, even for non-commercial passages, as a minimum it is recommended that the skipper holds the RYA Yachtmaster™ Offshore Certificate of Competence and should also have a significant amount of experience on vessels of a similar style and size to that being delivered. For longer passages and transocean deliveries, it is strongly recommended that the skipper holds the RYA Yachtmaster™ Ocean Certificate of Competence. The higher your qualification and greater your experience the more appealing you will be to a potential delivery company.

Delivery skippers and companies will often require crew. This is a great way to get some extra miles and experience under your belt. First Mates are genrally paid, but for deck crew more often than not you only expect to be reimbursed for your travel costs rather than receiving payment for the delivery. The RYA provides a range of courses across many subjects that will assist in preparing you well for a role as a delivery crew member. Experience gained on a passage is invaluable and coupled with some quality training will see you grow in confidence in your boating abilities. You can find opportunities for delivery skippers and crew here on Crewseekers in our Sailing Opportunities section.

SES Yachts delivers 1900s-styled superyacht Far Niente

SES Yachts has delivered the 32.7-metre Far Niente from its facility in Istanbul, Turkey.

Her round-bilged hull and classic lines are inspired by the "Dutch herring luggers of the early 1900s". Naval architecture, exterior and interior design are owed to Hoek Design Naval Architects , who applied a similar design philosophy to Turquoise Yachts ' 56-metre, steamship-style Blue II .

"Once again we have combined the timeless and elegant good looks of a classic motor yacht design with a fully optimised, hi-tech underwater body shape, using all the modern design programming we now have at our disposal," said designer Andre Hoek.

Far Niente 's fuel-efficient hull design is the result of "extensive optimisation" using Hoek Design's computational fluid dynamics programs (CFD), which was also applied to the yacht's single propeller. Her wooden superstructure, varnished teak finishing and teak decks were produced "by SES Yachts' experienced carpenters", according to the shipyard.

Accommodation is across five cabins, with three additional cabins allocated for crew. Interiors are largely contemporary, combining grey-washed oak and white panelling with more traditional deck heads and timber beams.

On deck highlights include a television lounge that leads to a covered sundeck with dining facilities. She is capable of storing two tenders in her foredeck, which are launched and retrieved using a retractable crane.

She is available for charter with Classic Charters.

Far Niente has a range of 3,750 nautical miles and a maximum speed of 11 knots. She is fitted with Sleipner stabilisers for added comfort and bow and stern thrusters for manoeuvrability.

SES Yachts is soon scheduled to launch the 40-metre sailing Linnea Aurora and the 26-metre Dark Sky.

Last year, Royal Hakvoort announced that construction had begun on 45-metre hybrid superyacht in collaboration with Hoek Design.

Officials identify drowning victim pulled from Norton Reservoir

sailboat yacht delivery

NORTON, Mass — Officials on Tuesday identified the man who fell out of a boat and drowned in the North Reservoir Monday night.

The Bristol County District Attorney’s Office says 42-year-old Ronald Carty accidentally fell out of his boat around 6:30 p.m. Two men on the boat told police they threw a life jacket to Carty, but the Attleboro native was unable to grab on before slipping under the water.

Carty’s body was recovered from the water just after 11:00 p.m. Monday night.

The Northern Bristol County Dive Team along with Massachusetts Environmental Police, Bristol North Regional Dive Team, Metro-LEC Marine Unit, Massachusetts State Police, as well as a helicopter from the Massachusetts State Police Air Wing, assisted Norton officials with their search.

Although officials say the death appears accidental, an investigation is still under way.

2025 Porsche Panamera E-Hybrid First Drive Review: Part electric, part gas, part boat

New plug-in hybrid panamera delights in general, but active ride suspension is a real trip.

sailboat yacht delivery

STUTTGART, Germany – Cars with different drive modes are commonplace. Even a humble Kia has a Sport button that tightens up the steering a smidge and makes the throttle more responsive. Two cars in one they do not make, however. The 2024 Porsche Panamera E-Hybrid, on the other hand, comes awfully close to pulling off the trick. Not by futzing with the steering effort – that remains resolutely constant, per Porsche ’s wise tradition – but by boasting the powertrains of an EV and gas-powered engine. Of course, plug-in hybrids are commonplace themselves, but this one distinguishes itself with a gasoline engine that’s characterful, accompanied by a saucy exhaust note and coupled to a transmission that snaps off shifts like a Porsche, rather than stirring through ratios like a Prius Prime . It’ll be silent and sophisticated when you need it – to work, to dinner and when stuck in traffic. But with the turn of the drive mode dial, it’ll come alive with the sort of sounds and feelings that make even the most EV-angelized car enthusiast take pause for what may be lost.

It can also make you feel like you’re piloting a boat. Or possibly something on a different planet where physics behaves just a bit differently. Plant the throttle and the nose plants along with it, like you’ve ignored a sign reading “Caution: Boat Launch.” Hit the brakes , and the nose comes up like a Jet Ski cutting its motor and rising as it slows into the water ahead. It can feel like you’re submarining in a totally un-nautical way, as if your actual body is sinking in your seat and being pulled under the steering wheel. In instances of lighter braking, it can feel like the back of the car is gently being pressed down into the road, almost like a rollerblade brake. Or an airplane pitching up for landing.

Wait, what’s going on? Exactly, things just got weird. And “weird” is the perfect word for the Active Ride suspension that’s optional on the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid and more powerful Panamera 4S E-Hybrid, even if the technology is wildly fascinating. In place of passive shock absorbers, Active Ride utilizes electrically powered hydraulic motor/pumps at each two-valve damper to independently control compression and rebound or, if you prefer, to raise or lower their entire corner of the suspension.

This takes adaptability to a new level, allowing the car to maximize handling and ride comfort like never before – it also eliminates the need for anti-roll bars since each damper reduces or eliminates roll independently. There are air springs (the standard setup is still an advanced adaptive air suspension itself), but they’re really only there to support the weight of the car when it’s off.

View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by James Riswick (@jamesriswick)

For all intents and purposes, Active Ride achieves the same result as various adaptive air suspensions: It gets firmer for tauter handling, softer for a more comfortable ride and adjusts the ride height for a lower stance that benefits aerodynamics as well as handling. It just goes further than that, and all you have to do is open the door to realize it. The car pops up several inches, and yes, “pops” is the best word to describe the very quick, smooth action. After a day getting in and out of the Panamera, the trick never stopped being funny – you’re just not expecting a car to behave like that. You’re also not used to that much gap between the tire and wheel arch of a Porsche, be it a car or SUV. Even the Dakar looks like a GT3 compared to what I dubbed Panamera Wilderness mode. Sadly, you can’t drive around like that because I guess no one at Porsche appreciates that type of humor. Hopefully your passengers will appreciate the easier entry and exit into the Panamera’s deeply slung seats.

But what about all those body motions that require comparisons to various conveyances other than automobiles? The system is designed to counteract body roll and keep the car perfectly level through corners, which it most certainly does. This brand of physics-defying wizardry isn’t strictly new, however, even if the method and degree of proficiency are. It also doesn’t screw with your equilibrium as much as the pitch-mitigation functionality that’s added only when in Normal suspension mode (automatically selected in all-electric E-Power and Hybrid Auto modes; driver-selectable in Sport and Sport Plus). Maybe it’s just that while cornering, your eyes are too distracted by the typical effects of lateral inertia, but either way, there’s no missing the front suspension lowering when accelerating and raising during braking – and most noticeably resetting back to normal thereafter. It gives a whole new meaning to the automotive dynamic description of “nautical.” It’s a fascinating if potentially nauseating feeling, and maybe you’d get used to it, but honestly, why bother? It’s hard to imagine the stock air suspension not being sufficiently stellar.

Leaving Active Ride in Sport turns off the high-seas trickery, and although Germany’s chef’s-kiss pavement will always make it a little tough to determine ride quality, it seems perfectly livable. Associate Editor Byron Hurd concurred, reporting that the Active Ride-equipped non-hybrid Panamera was “quite tolerable” on Seville ’s “asphalt seemingly held together by the still-whole bones of dead crusaders.” Sounds like it should be good in Michigan and California, then. Plus, with Sport selected, it makes it a lot easier to zero in on the Panamera’s improved plug-in hybrid powertrain.

sailboat yacht delivery

The new 25.9-kilowatt-hour battery pack has 45% more capacity than before, yet doesn’t take up any more space in the body. A new 11-kW onboard charger allows for more rapid at-home charging (as little as 2.5 hours), but the car itself can recharge the battery on the fly up to 80%. How far is that all-electric range? It should be better than the previous E-Hybrid’s meager 19 miles, but official figures are not yet available. We also got into the car when it was less than fully charged, and with all the Autobahn and mountain road driving, nothing we can report would be applicable.

Both the 4 and 4S E-Hybrids feature an upgraded 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6, which produces 300 horsepower and 309 pound-feet of torque in the 4 E-Hybrid, and 348 hp and 368 lb-ft in the 4S E-Hybrid. They then share a new, more powerful electric motor (up to 187 hp and 331 lb-ft from 134/295), but due to the too-complicated-to-explain-here vagaries of PHEV’s overall power outputs, the 4S E-Hybrid is considerably more powerful than its gas engine specs would indicate. The 4 E-Hybrid is good for a total system output of 463 hp and 479 lb-ft, and hits 60 mph in 3.9 seconds; the 4S E-Hybrid is good for 536 hp, 553 lb-ft and a 3.5-second sprint. Those sprint times represent a 0.3-second pickup for the E-Hybrid and 0.4 seconds for the 4S E-Hybrid.

2025 Porsche Panamera 4S E-Hybrid action front three quarter

Although a firm, right-pedal thwack will summon the V6 in from the bullpen to lend a hand when in the all-electric E-Power mode, it was a rarity during our drive around Porsche’s home turf near Stuttgart. With either version, there’s more than enough oomph on tap from the motor to keep the car moving with vigor on the Autobahn and a mountain road alike. And thanks to its electric motor being integrated into the PDK, there are still snappy shifts along the way to make things feel normal. Now, this isn’t the only PHEV to have a traditional automatic (Hyundais, Kias and several others have them), but this is the perfect example of why Hyundai’s not so nuts for making the all-electric Ioniq 5 N simulate shifts. It just feels right in a performance setting. When the engine does pop on, such as when the TBA miles of all-electric range is depleted and the E-Hybrid mode is automatically selected, the sound of the engine is actually surprising and honestly a bit off-putting. It’s easy to forget you’re not in a plush, pure EV luxury car .

Put the car into Sport or Sport Plus, however, and the engine fires to life with the sonic accompaniment of the Sport exhaust mode. Now lay into the throttle and you’ll forget you’re not in any other internal combustion Panamera. In Sport, the PDK snaps off shifts; in Sport Plus, it can occasionally bang between them like a muscular arm slotting it into gear. The noise isn’t the ear-splitting flat-six fury of a Spyder RS , but it’s bound to make you happy. So will the talkative steering that feels delicate in your grip, and the confident road-holding made possible by Active Ride and available rear-wheel steering (a much easier-to-recommend feature). The Panamera has never been bigger or heavier, but it also has never felt so small from behind the wheel.

From the back seat, the Panamera may occasionally feel nautical in body motions, but no one will confuse the accommodations as belonging to a yacht. It’s tight back there for a pricey luxury sedan , and with the low-slung seat and high beltline, you can feel a bit below deck. It can, however, be equipped with power-adjustable seats that offer recline and, uniquely, thigh support extensions. In the back seat! The chairs up front offer more adjustability, of course, and are particularly friendly to those longer of limb. Our test cars were also spec’d with an oh-so-cool “Pepita” houndstooth fabric that’s 100 times cooler (in style) than any draping of cow. Porsche has also figured out how to keep you cooler (in temperature) by making seat ventilation work with fabric upholstery. Although as a porous material, perhaps it always was and Porsche is the first to try it?

sailboat yacht delivery

Other interior updates for the E-Hybrids are shared with other members of this next-generation Panamera lineup. The all-digital instruments offer several different looks, but the wheel controls that select them and the information they display are insufficient and confusing, especially as the wheel controls also operate the head-up display. The new 12.3-inch touchscreen is more universally appreciated – it looks good and it’s easy to use thanks to permanently docked menu shortcuts. The navigation system guided me flawlessly through the unfamiliar and at times confusing roadscape of a foreign land. There’s also a passenger screen available, but it really just seems like showing off rather than providing any actual benefit.

The last Panamera’s center console featured a shift lever flanked by haptic-touch buttons for performance functions, infotainment shortcuts and climate controls. They’ve mostly been liquidated in favor of a cleaner look on top and a hidden wireless phone charger below. Those performance functions are now within the touchscreen, including the suspension and exhaust setting overrides that pop up on screen and linger just long enough when you turn the wheel-mounted mode selector. The climate controls are reorganized into the same panel first seen in the revised Cayenne that works well enough, but don’t provide the same satisfaction as Porsche’s old, delightfully clicky buttons. The Panamera sadly retains the touchscreen-operated air vents that happily failed to catch on in subsequent Porsches . The shifter is now the same up-down jumbo toggle found in the Cayenne and Taycan ; the vehicle starter is now a button, but remains on the left side of the wheel.

No switch is more important than that little, still delightfully clicky knob on the steering wheel that goes through the Panamera E-Hybrid ’s multiple personalities. Having not driven a 2024 Panamera without Active Drive, I can’t comment on the difference it makes in Sport mode – for better or for worse – but I just can’t see paying $7,150 for its bizarre behavior in Normal mode. It makes for an intriguing and at times mind-bending drive, but beneficial? The plug-in hybrid powertrain is, however.

Now, prices start at $117,495 for the 4 E-Hybrid and $128,795 for the 4S E-Hybrid, including destination, which is surprisingly a lot more than a 2025 Taycan. Pricing for the more comparably powered Taycan 4S has yet to be announced, but there’s a decent chance it’ll be at least on par. That shouldn’t do much to change the Taycan routinely outselling the Panamera, sometimes doubling it. Still, the Panamera has more interior space and can be quickly refilled with 91 at any old gas station during a road trip . Meanwhile, its all-electric capability and increased range mean it’s just as capable of silently, luxuriously and eco-mindedly wafting along on shorter trips without spewing CO2 … at least until you turn the dial and turn Herr Doctor into Mr. Hyde. It’s really that duality that makes the Panamera E-Hybrid such a special car, even if it occasionally feels like you’re yachting on Titan .

Guppy 13 is a 12 ′ 6 ″ / 3.8 m monohull sailboat designed by Herb Stewart and built by Melen Marine Ltd.(USA) between 1974 and 1975.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Said to be a ‘splashed’ copy of the earlier SPARROW 12 built by HMS Marine Inc.(USA) with some modifications. A daysailer version (without the cabin trunk) was known as the GUPPY 130.

  • Main sail 4.5 m2 from Dacron (no boom)
  • Aluminium ‘spine’ powder-coated frame permanently attached to trampoline
  • Grey floats pre-fixed to the main frame
  • Trampoline 1600x450mm with colored design, fixed with special grab-handles
  • Short black keel fins, same fixing as on all other models
  • No stainless-steel ropes beneath the trampoline
  • Single design, single colour-scheme
  • Floats fitted with stainless rings to fasten the additional front trampoline or the line when anchoring the boat

The size is based on our very popular 310 model, but with GUPPY,  it is all about the simplicity and speed of assembly . With the uniquely developed design of floats pre-fixed to the frame, the set-up takes just 10 minutes from start to finish. GUPPY is also exceptionally light (just 27kg), and with grab handles on the trampoline, manipulation is easy, especially for children.

The main feature of the MiniCat GUPPY is the flexible composite mast, which is fixed simply in the frame without lines. This makes the boat much safer in strong winds, as the mast flexes and prevents the sailor from easily capsizing.

The excellent design of the sail and the lack of a jib ensure that this highly portable, lightweight dinghy sailboat appeals, especially to first-time young sailors who want to learn sailing techniques, have fun, and experience some adrenaline rushes. GUPPY is also perfect as a fun accessory for your yacht.

TECHNICAL DETAILS

Frame & deck.

The main element of the Guppy frame is the back-bone centre frame of light-weight aluminium which is fastened by pins to the cross-section part of the floats. They are permanently attached to the floats and define their position. The trampoline is produced from high-strength woven plastic fabric and is permanently attached to the floats for speed of assembly.

The trampoline fabric sections fill the frame and are tightly secured by a threaded line. As the trampoline is taut and the frame is tight there is no need for any additional fixings.

To the rear of the frame the rudder is mounted. All parts of the frame are made of aluminum and are powder coated.

The Guppy is equipped with two inflatable floats 3.0 m in length and 39 cm diameter. The floats are made of reinforced Heytex 5509, highly resistant it abrasion and very hard wearing. This material is produced in Germany and production technology was adopted from the production of white-water rafts. The floats are single-chamber with a combined load capacity of 235 kg.

Both floats are fitted with three grab-handles for easy handling of the boat in and out of the water. Permanently affixed to the floats is a trampoline.

To fully enjoy sailing your Guppy you must confidently control your boat. It is imperative to minimize ‘side-sail’, especially when sailing against the wind. To achieve this detachable keel fins were designed from UV stabilised polypropylene to attach under each float. Their design and shape gives excellent performance yet still allows the boat to be sailed in very shallow water without the risk of damage. The principle of the keel fins runs across the range of MiniCat models and is a key factor in the handling characteristics of MiniCat.

The new GUPPY is featuring 3-piece flexible composite mast slotted together with no anchoring lines. The length of the assembled mast is 4,15 m. This construction ensures high flexibility and strength for ultimate safety, performance and enjoyment.

Guppy is equipped with a single sail, without a boom for easy use. The total area of the sail is 4.5 m2. The sail material ‘Dimension Polyant ‘ is used with a surface density of 175-210g/m. The sail is ‘ all-spire ‘ construction, i.e. without a yardarm. The sail also has a window to ensure better visibility while sailing.

Guppy has an aluminium rudder attached to the centre of the frame. The design of the rudder allows it to be raised at a 90 degree angle, sat at the shore or in very shallow water there is no danger of damage. The rudder can be locked in both positions, raised or lowered. Thanks to the locking device the rudder can be easily arranged at the helm in two extreme positions. A tiller extension increases comfort and convenience while sailing. The tiller arm is jointed allowing full 360 degree movement.

Fittings from the companies Ronstan, Seasure, Clamcleat and Suchomel are used throughout the MiniCat range of models. All spare parts and accessories are available. See our SPARE PARTS & ACCESSORIES CATALOGUE. As with the entire range of MiniCat models Guppy is designed and manufactured in the EU.

Both the main sail and jib have transparent windows to ensure better visibility and security while sailing. The 460 Esprit can be equipped with optional Gennaker.

The MiniCat 460 frame, to which the floats attach, is produced from light-weight aluminum and the frame parts are powder coated. The trampoline is produced from high strength woven plastic fabric.

The MiniCat 460 is equipped with 15.1 ft. hulls with a 19.2 inch diameter. Made of Heytex 5509, they are abrasion resistant. The floats are single-chamber with a combined load capacity of 1213 lbs.

The design of the rudder allows it to be raised and lowered to help launch and navigate the shallows. Thanks to the locking device the rudder can be easily arranged from the helm to the desired position. The tiller arm is jointed allowing full 360 degree movement which increases comfort when sailing. The rudder on 460 Elite is made of Carbon Fiber.

The world's favorite portable sailboat!

MiniCat offers the most portable, versatile beach catamaran on the market. With a variety of models and sizes available, Great Lakes Watercraft can help you decide which is the perfect boat to take on your next adventure.

Learn to Sail

It is never too early or too late to grab the helm and learn to sail. The MiniCat Brand is beautiful, portable and easy to assemble which makes getting out on the water hassle free. MiniCats do not require a dock, trailor, or storage so you can avoid the overhead costs on your journey to becoming an admiral. At Great Lakes Watercraft, we have a few recommendations from the MiniCat lineup for ambitious sea dogs ready to learn.

MiniCat Guppy

The smallest and simplest boat in the MiniCat range, the Guppy is a great trainer for beginners. You can learn to sail on a low stress, single sail boat! Holy mackerel!

The 310 sport is the first boat with jib sail equipped with a roller furler to quickly pulls the sheet while asea. It was designed for individual sailors who want a compact, fun boat to sail, with the option for speed and high performance. The 310 model is easy to right should you capsize, even for children!

MiniCat 420 Emotion

The Emotion is the first trim level in the 420 series to come equipped with a boomed mainsail and a dedicated forestay for greater sail control. It is the first fully featured boat, so skills learned on this weatherly boat will translate well to a bigger rig.

The MiniCat lineup has a very forward thinking, practical design. These sailboats can be assembled in 20-45 minutes and they pack down small enough to fit in a closet, garage, or on the roof rack of your Chevy Spark! Great Lakes Watercraft recommends a few models that are perfect for spending a day on the water with friends and family. Having a unique boat with a full selection of sail colors, you are sure to be all the scuttlebut on the water.

MiniCat 420 Instinct

The 420 is the smallest size boat with space for having all hands on deck. It is rated for 4 adults and up to 992lbs! The Instinct does not have a boomed mainsail. So a family of four can run a tight ship without concern that heads will be knocked by the boom.

MiniCat 420 Emotion & Evoque

These are fully featured for your day sailing voyage. Complete with a boom, continuous line jib furler, and dedicated forestay, it is easy enough for a few kids to manage and can go full speed ahead in the right hands. The Evoque has a carbon fiber boom, bowsprit, and rudder; while the Emotion parts are made of aluminum and epoxy.

MiniCat 460 Esprit

The MiniCat 460 carries 4 adults and supports a weight capacity of up to 1,234lbs! It is complete with 124 sq ft of sail area made of a Poly-X racing material. It is the best value in performance beach cats and a spacious boat for the whole family.

Camping & RVs

Exploring everything the Great Lakes has to offer often means packing it all in your car, truck, or RV and hitting the road! Limited space may mean limited activity options when you get to your destination. Let MiniCat help you make waves on your vacation! We have a few options that can help you can graduate from a cabin boy to a deck hand on a compact, ultra portable sailboat!

The smallest and simplest boat in the MiniCat range, the Guppy packs into a single bag, which can slide into the storage boot of your RV or be strapped to a roof rack! It takes about 10 minutes to set up when you get to your destination.

The 310 also fits in a single bag. The 310 Sport is what we would call a ‘performance sailing dinghy’. It boasts 56ft2 of sail area and only weighs 77lbs. It combines pristine design and premium materials to give customers a boat that’s easy to carry on land, and efficient on the water.

MiniCat 420 Evoque & Laura Dekker

With the 420 series, what you give up in portability, you more then make up in performance. The boats pack into two large bags, that can be transported in a tailgate or on a roof rack. Both the Evoque and the Laura Dekker come equipped with carbon fiber elements to keep the boat lightweight. These fully-featured sailboats provide an elite sailing experience while on the road or on vacation!

These cats can run fast on the water! Lightweight, premium materials and intelligent design enable skippers to have portability, stability, and reliability without sacrificing performance. The are the lightest weight sailboats on the market with an unrivaled sail area to displacement ratio (SA/D). They can move in any amount of wind, but in 15-20 knots you get a true feel for the flank speed!

MiniCat 420 Laura Dekker

The special edition 420 is named after the brand ambassador, Laura Dekker. It has an awesome color scheme over a dacron jib and a poly-x racing mainsail. The Laura Dekker also boasts a traveler and all the carbon fiber bits from the Evoque.

MiniCat 420 Evoque (with Carbon Mast Upgrade)

To maximize the SA/D, you go as lightweight as possible! The carbon mast has less weight aloft which allows you to carry full sails in stronger wind. It can be stepped by a six year old and it has the added bonus of making the bags easier to transport.

MiniCat 460 Elite

The 460 is the largest and fastest in the MiniCat lineup. The Elite model is equipped with all of the carbon fiber goodies and a sleek poly-x racing mainsail. Pair with an optional gennaker and suffer to gap off from the competition.

Looking for something fun while your cruiser or yacht is anchored at bay? Look no further than MiniCat. They are towable, extremely lightweight, and can be stored in bags below deck. When you are done sailing, MiniCat can also be used as a tender. Just remove the sails, mast, and put on the engine support bracket. Then fit your electric motor and go!

The smallest and simplest boat in the MiniCat range, the Guppy packs into a single bag, has a single sail, and is best suited for a single adult or a few children! It takes about 10 minutes to set up when you get to your destination.

The 310 Sport is what we would call a ‘performance sailing dinghy’ that packs down into a single bag. It’s very efficient on the water and small enough to assemble on an open bow or swim deck.

MiniCat 420 Evoque

The 420 Evoque is the first rate, fully featured sailboat to have at anchor. It demands a more space for assembly, but will be your entertainment for the week! Practice and race in low wind or on a 20 knot day!

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
