Turtle soup was a test: failed. Wrong flavor and a weird consistency. Redfish special was nice and fresh. Vegetables were way undercooked and very spotty service. Of course. Dropped bread and never returned until the end. One star for the great view. Overall go for the view. Forget the food.

This is a beautiful facility. I've been to several work banquet type dinners here and have enjoyed them all. The staff is welcoming and the food has always been tasty. The views of Lake Ponchartrain are amazing. The floor to ceiling windows, and balcony access make it easy to take a few deep breaths and just chill. Maybe it's just me, but I find water views relaxing. I've been to the club during the day with friends who are members, and there is good stuff going on. The kids can swim in the super clean, outdoor pool. There's a snack bar, an outdoor bar for the grown ups, lots of meeting space, and of course sailing. I've got friends who's children have learned to sail there from very young ages. They seem to instill a love of the sport.

We were here tonight. I have visited for decades, both as a GYA Club member, and as a guest of other members. SYC is a very GREAT place, and is an INSTITUTION in Gulf Coast sailing. The restaurant & bar are excellent. The new building is a beauty. The members are typical Southerners, so friendly & hospitable. If you are eligible to visit SYC, don't miss this venerable institution, founded in 1842. Rick

So I'm trying to be tougher on my reviews and not write as many five star reviews. Normally I would review this place as 3 stars based on my experience at a Saturday daytime lunch on the third floor. But I have to say the view is just breathtaking, hence the extra star! Well, one of my best friends is in a sorority and their alumni chapter had a breast cancer fundraiser lunch at this venue on a Saturday morning/afternoon. I had never been before so I was excited to check it out! If you know me well then you know how much I love being near water (heck, I live on bayou St. John! Hehe) so I was really excited excited to see their space. Well, I was not disappointed! There is a horseshoe type parking space which is one way. The Peking closest to the building is reserved for club members, so exclusive! Hehe And the building sits right next to the water. There is also an outdoor pool and picnic tables shielded under the building. You walk into a modern lobby and there are signs letting you know what floor each event is being held. So up to the third floor I go and the room is lovely! There are huge windows that show off the amazing view! In fact, during a break my girlfriends and I meandered to the balcony to take pictures and take in the picturesque vantage point! As for the food it was adequate but nothing really a stood out. You can see in my pictures the standard Cesar salad, catfish almondine and chocolate mousse. Everything was tasty but not remarkable. Service was very efficient and polite so definite plus! I quite enjoyed this event and the views that went along with it! Happy sailing!

One of the oldest Yacht Clubs in the USA the SYC has a long and distinguished history in the annals of yachting. This is the epicenter of sailing for the NOLA area and the club has some fantastic programs. They have a nice pool area with a smaller kid friendly splash pool. The clubhouse has nice facilities overlooking Lake Pontchartrain and the food is generally good to excellent depending on what you order. This spot is always a hub of activity and it is certainly a popular venue for many events and activities.

Photo of Lauren L.

Disappointment, thy name is SYC. Expecting something akin to the preKatrina SYC, I was very saddened by the office-building like ambience. Cold, industrial, not a touch of charm.... oh, and the food was horrible. On top of this truly unpleasant experience, the staff was incredibly rude and insisted upon picking up plates, silverware, and glassware without even asking if anyone was finished. Truly horrible experience. I hope I never have to go back.

Photo of Nick W.

I'm a fan but also a member of this private club. So if I pay to have the ability to go there then why the review?? Because there are a lot of things about this club which make it wonderful and a very unique part of NOLA: 1. There are amazing activities for kids during the summer and at different parts of the year. Need to get sponsored by a member but 100% worth it. 2. Watch a sunset from the bar! Best I have found in the city. 3. New chef is really good. He mixes up the menu on a monthly basis with specials all the time which keeps the place interesting. Find a friend who's a member and make them take you to dinner... you won't regret it.

Photo of Cristy C.

Romantic and peaceful place to watch the sunset. I really enjoy coming here. It's such a pretty place... like a mini getaway in the city. Food is yummy too.

Boat Clubs: Are They Worth It?

southern yacht club membership cost

Table of Contents

Last Updated on May 3, 2024 by Boatsetter Team

On the surface, boat clubs seem like a great idea. Instead of buying a boat, you pay a monthly fee and have access to a range of different vessels. The problem is that, in reality, things don’t work out quite that smoothly. Here are five major drawbacks to joining a boat club that they keep secret from you.

  • Limited selection of boats
  • Too much pressure
  • Limited locations and blackout days for boating
  • Overcrowded club and a false-promising waitlist
  •  Unreasonable costs

Let’s look at these together to save you loads of money and get you the best boating experience .

Explore on the water destinations & experiences with Boatsetter

What is a boat club

A boat club is a membership-based organization that provides individuals with access to a fleet of boats without the burdens of ownership. While boat clubs offer convenience and cost savings, it’s important to consider certain limitations before joining. Joining a boat club means paying a regular fee and booking boats according to availability, which gives members the chance to enjoy boating experiences. Nevertheless, it’s important to consider some possible disadvantages.

What are the drawbacks of a boat club membership?

1) Limited selection of boats

When we join a boat club, there is this idea that one weekend we can take out a family-sized pontoon and the next, a luxury catamaran . The problem is that most clubs really only offer a pretty narrow selection of boats. And, with most people having the same free time as in being off—weekends, holidays, and summertime—then you may find yourself standing empty-handed.

2) Too much pressure

One big problem with joining a club is you feel pressure to get the most out of it. The average annual boat club is $275 per month. If you don’t boat that often or have a hectic month, it feels like money just is thrown down the drain and just another wasted expense.

3) Limited locations and blackout days for boating

While some clubs have locations worldwide, you’re pretty much chained to one location, typically a touristy spot. Freedom Boat Club, for example, is one of the largest boat clubs in the world, and most of its locations are in the US. On the other hand, smaller, more affordable local-based boat clubs may only have one or two locations that make getting the most out of the boat club, to be blatant, difficult!

While boat clubs may offer you different tiers of membership based on where and when you plan to go boating, keep in mind those plans come with restricted access. One option might be a week day only membership, another may be limited to your city’s club. As life changes and your schedule along with it, you soon come to realize being locked into these plans isn’t the best bang for your buck.

4) Overcrowded club and a false-promising wait list

This is what they really don’t want to tell you: the club is full! Instead, they’ll put you on a waiting list and have you pay an upfront fee without having enjoyed anything yet. If you do get into a club that is overcrowded, getting on the water might be really difficult because there are too many other people trying to do the same thing as you.

5) Unreasonable costs

It all comes back to cost. At the end of the day, the price of joining and maintaining a boat club membership is simply unreasonable. Typically you pay several thousand dollar initiation fees and several hundred dollar monthly fees, so often it’s cheaper to own your boat or just rent one!

Ding, ding, ding : Boatsetter V. Boat Clubs (Comparing Costs & Benefits)

Instead of dealing with all this consider renting a boat through Boatsetter! You have a huge range of unique boat brands and models to choose from, a network of USCG-certified captains, and trip planning tools like Add-ons , Multi-day booking, and more. While you think some more about it, let us show you the differences between our proud peer-to-peer (P2P) boat-sharing community and a few popular boat clubs in the US.

Find available boat rentals near you on Boatsetter

Boatsetter V. Carefree Boat Club

Carefree Boat Club operates on a membership-based model. Individuals pay a one-time initiation fee and monthly dues in exchange for access to a fleet of boats.

These fees vary depending on the location and may even be monthly. According to some of the Care Free Boat Club websites the upfront costs range from $1,950 to $4,450 and the monthly costs range from $150 to $375.

As you can see, the costs associated with boat clubs get pricy, quickly. You might get the full value out of Carefree Boat Club, but it won’t be easy. By renting a boat with Boatsetter, you can avoid all inflated fees! Just pay each time you would like to take out a boat, and you are all set for a fun day out on the water. With over 4500 active boats on our platform across the country, you can find the perfect boat for your needs.

Boatsetter V. Nautical Boat Club

Like many other boat clubs on this list, Nautical Boat Club has an initial one-time membership cost and an ongoing monthly cost. The monthly membership cost may vary depending on the boat and the location. The total for your first year with Nautical Boat Club can range from $4535 to $14,355.

Our goal at Boatsetter is to make boating accessible to everyone by not tying our customers to recurring fees. All of our boats across the country are available for rent—no catch!

Boatsetter V. 321 Boat Club

321 Boat Club is a Florida-based boat club with initiation costs ranging from $975 to $3,450 and monthly costs ranging from $149 to $249. 321 Boat Club membership levels largely depend on what day and time you would like to take out a boat. With 321 Boat Club’s fleet being limited to specific parts of Florida, this may not be the best option for everyone. With Boatsetter, you can rent boats across the country on any day of the week!

Boatsetter V. Freedom Boat Club

Freedom Boat Club has a one-time entry fee and monthly membership plans that vary by location. The club offers access to boats, free training, insurance coverage, and special events. Fuel costs are not included. It emphasizes the club’s transparency and commitment to providing a great boating experience for its members.

Boatsetter, on the other hand, is a boat rental marketplace where individuals can rent boats directly from boat owners. The cost of renting a boat on Boatsetter varies depending on factors such as the type of boat, location, duration, and any additional services or amenities requested.

Boatsetter offers a wide range of boats to choose from and provides insurance coverage for both boat owners and renters. The rental fees generally do not include fuel costs, which are the responsibility of the renter. The biggest benefit of using Boatsetter vs Freedom boat club is that there is no long-term commitment or costs!

This experienced franchise-based boat club has a conveniently located club in Los Angeles, based in the famous marina known as Marina del Rey.

This scenic marina is within walking distance of many restaurants and activities. Carefree Boat Club maintains a sizeable fleet at this marina for its members to use and enjoy throughout the season.

As with most traditional boat clubs, Carefree focuses on providing its members with excellent sailing experience, minus all of the hassles of owning your boat.

  • Located conveniently, with LAX, Venice Beach, and Santa Monica all within half an hour
  • The fleet includes luxury bowriders, center consoles, and performance cruisers
  • Members have unlimited access to the fleet using the reservation system
  • Marina del Rey is one of LA’s most popular marinas and therefore quite busy
  • The fleet is well-maintained but does not have the diversity of boat types of other clubs

Freedom Boat Club – Los Angeles

Freedom Boat Club is known as one of the premier boat club franchises, and its Los Angeles club location has many of the features that make this reputation possible.

The San Pedro location at the Cabrillo Way Marina is located close to the panoramic Catalina Island, a popular getaway for generations of sailors.

With a fleet that cycles new boats every few years, there are a variety of ways to get away for the weekend,  using the club’s simple online reservation system.

Freedom Boat Club gives members access to boats that can be taken directly out on the water, with no need to add gas or maintain them. This convenience is at the core of the Freedom Boat Club franchise.

  • The fleet has a sport cabin boat, center consoles, and paddleboards for member use
  • As a Freedom Boat Club member, you will have access to locations across the country
  • This club is closed on Tuesdays, but the nearby Huntington Beach club is open
  • The San Pedro location’s fleet does not have a boat rated for larger groups (9+ people)
  • Due to the heavy boat traffic at the club location, all members must receive local training

The clubhouse features a full bar, library, dining, and beautiful decorations and scenery.

  • Different memberships are offered for different needs (such as not owning a boat)
  • The club features a lively social scene and member-only events throughout the month
  • Los Angeles Yacht Club is known for their experience managing and organizing races

SailTime Los Angeles

SailTime is a unique boating club that uses a fractional membership system. Like many other boat clubs, this club charges a monthly fee to access its fleet.

However, members are given access to one boat, that they can then become familiar with. While this may feel like you are missing out on the entire fleet, having one boat to call your own may be the appeal you are looking for!

This style of membership ensures that all club members feel invested in the ship they take out on the water, therefore taking better care of it, while also helping members feel more comfortable and at home in their boat.

  • There are three locations around LA: San Pedro, Marina del Rey, and the Channel Islands
  • A flat monthly fee and annual membership discounts keep this club’s fees simple
  • SailTime offers sailing training accredited by the American Sailing Association
  • Members are restricted to one boat, rather than having access to the entire fleet
  • Other members will have access to your boat if you enroll in the Owner program

Del Rey Yacht Club

Del Rey Yacht Club operates at one of the most scenic marinas in Los Angeles and is known for its friendly members and great amenities.

Established in 1953, the Del Rey Yacht Club has been bringing excellence to the Southern California yachting scene for over fifty years.

One core aspect of the club is its focus on member-based activities.

Additionally, the club supports many experiences, such as a junior sailing program, racing events, and fine dining.

  • There are several different memberships to suit each member’s needs
  • An active racing and social event calendar give members plenty to do
  • The club holds seminars and training to help actively educate their members

re: Compare Metairie Country Club & New Orleans Country Club

replies

quote: After Katrina, MCC was struggling and waived initiation fees or greatly reduced them, and dues, for a while, to build back up the membership. I know several people who joined during this time and still belong. NOCC would never even imagine doing such a thing.
quote: The initiation fee is much lower than that at MCC these days
quote: in the planning phases of completely redoing again. No uptick in dues...yet.

quote: Daughter (no pics) lifeguarded at Metairie Country Club one summer. She was not permitted to sit down during breaks. Very bougie.
quote: What are the age demographics like for each club? I assume NOCC skews older & MCC has a larger junior membership (or at least couples under age 50).
quote: I guess I'm the trashy, cheap one
quote: This should be fun. Grassman and maybe one or two other posters are the only ones that could even get onto New Orleans CC. Even people like me can get on at Metairie.

southern yacht club membership cost

As a business owner having the convenience and privacy of a yacht without owning one that sits unused most of the time is worth this amazing business model.

Testimonial Headshot.jpg

Owning a yacht never made sense financially. I've always chartered yachts, but it ends up being really expensive. This membership is half the coast I typically pay and a much more luxurious charter.

Ecstatic Artizia Yachts Customer

I've talked with over 20 boat clubs and nothing has come close to being a real alternative to owning a yacht except Artizia Yachts. Membership is cost-effective and caters to my needs.
