FIJI Shores and Marinas

Your Essential Guide to the Shores and Marinas of Fiji

Royal Suva Yacht Club

Welcome to the Capital – Suva!

Suva Harbour is well protected by a fringing reef about 1.5 miles offshore. The opening is well marked and wide enough to enter with plenty of room for commercial ships. However, the reefs lining the coast and the main entrance are dotted with shipwrecks.

The Royal Suva Yacht Club

Anchorage in the Suva Harbour is shared by fishing boats, freighters, yachts, and cruise liners. If you prefer to use a marina facility, the Royal Suva Yacht Club is the place to go.

The club was founded around 1930 and while originally located closer to town, the current building in Walu Bay was built circa 1940. The rich history of the club can be found dotted around the clubhouse with trophies, photos and mementos on display.

Coming ashore at the Royal Suva Yacht Club is convenient and hassle free as the club offers a comprehensive range of facilities to boat owners, plus social facilities for its associated members. Overseas sailors can use the facilities for a small fee.

If you intend to use the Royal Suva Yacht Clubs facilities, you will need to register with the club and become a temporary member.

The club has bathrooms with hot water, and a next day laundry service. There’s also a restaurant, a great kid’s playground and wireless internet access that may cover as far as some of the offshore moorings.

It has become very popular with the 42” TV screen regularly screening sports events like Super Rugby. RSYC also has a projector and screen for larger than life coverage of major sporting events. A barbeque set is available for use in this area for a small fee.

Royal Suva Yacht Club

Hi . My father (Ron Wilson) from Auckland NZ was a member of The Suva Yacht Club around 1950 or so. I know he sailed idlealong boats and won several regattas /,races. He spoke fondly of his time in Suva but never returned to Fiji from about 1952 or so . Does the club have any records of yacht events races from that era.I visited the club in 2014 and saw many trophy’s and memorabilia – but was curious if any records of events was available. Thanks – Paul Wilson

Suva, the Capital of Fiji, was developed in the late 1800s and retains much of the character of the colonial period. Its many attractions include shopping, restaurants, markets, museums, and nightclubs. You can enjoy a walk around the central city area, which will uncover numerous surprises. A leisurely stroll down Victoria Parade you’ll see the blending of traditional, early 20th-century South Pacific buildings juxtaposed with modern high-rise structures. Towards the end of the Parade are the Government Buildings, which open onto Albert Park, Thurston Gardens, and Suva Point, guiding you to the architecturally striking Parliament Buildings.

Royal Suva Yacht Club

The current Royal Suva Yacht Club was built in 1948 at Walu Bay. It is believed to have begun earlier (possibly the 1930s) in the heart of Suva city near the old wharf at Pier Street before the land was reclaimed.

The Suva Yacht Club was established in 1932 but believed to have been formed earlier. It was formed by a small group headed by T.M. Mcquire, later elected as the club’s first Commodore. Members of the club were initially British officials at the time but later I-taukei and Indo-Fijians were admitted to its ranks. The first official race was held in the Suva Harbour in 1932.

In 1937 the first phase of the club was built in the heart of Suva City possibly around the present post office near the wharf. The property where the club is situated previously belonged to the Suvavou villagers.  Today it is State land.

The club was moved to its present location on Walu Bay in 1948. The first gala ball was then organised to celebrate this new site. Construction of the new site was completed in August 1948.

In 1949 H.M.S. Viti was sold to the Tasman Steamship Trading Co. and the ‘coat of arms’ was presented to the Suva Yacht Club.

His Majesty King George the Sixth of Great Britain granted approval in 1950 for the club to include the word “Royal” in its name.

In 1956 the club hosted the Biennial Royal Auckland to Suva Race.

In 1964 Former Flight Lieutenant C. Don Aidney who served in WWII became Commodore until 1967.  Aidney was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.

The first meeting of the RSYC Fishing Game was held in 1974. In the same year, “The Dove” film was produced by US actor Gregory Peck and featured the club.

The club celebrated its 50th Golden Jubilee in 1982.

A celebration of 60 years of safe harbour was held in 1989 and the club also hosted the Auckland-Suva-Guam-Japan race.

A sailing regatta was held in 1994 as part of the first “Fiji Games”.

In 1998 the club’s sailors participated in a regatta in New Caledonia.

In 1999 the club hosted the Coffs Harbour-Suva race and the Auckland-Suva-Guam-Japan race. RSYC Junior Sailor, Alex Phillips, also won a silver medal at the Guam South Pacific Games the same year.

In 2003 Phillips’ team, called “The Laser Sailors”, won gold in the Fiji South Pacific Games.

In 2004 Vice Patron Robin Storck, a past commodore, was appointed as official historian for the club.

In 2005 the oldest living founding member Mr Hugh Ragg passed away at 100 years old. The 50th anniversary of sailing to the islands was celebrated the same year (Auckland – Suva race) The club also hosted the first President’s Yachting Regatta in 2005.

It celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2007. Vice Patron Cecil D. Aidney (the flight lieutenant who fought in WWII) passed away the same year.

“Royal Suva Yacht Club” Review of The Galley

Nanna turned 82. Great service. Cool ambience and yummy food. Good job pauline & kamea

If the foods are quite good, and the staff very nice, the restaurant is not so neat, the tables need to be cleaned or revarnished. I could not enjoy having lunch facing the boats and the marina, it was raining over the RSYC at Walu Bay, Suva

Love this place. The food is incredible and there is such a beautiful relaxed atmosphere to the space. The coconut cream pie will change your life. Definitely one of my favourite spots in Suva.

Need a lot of improvement in terms of service, especially in the morning. Food not ready and slow service. Would suggest to increase workforce.

The Galley is quickly becoming a great place to have food which includes fish as one of the items on the menu. The place is well set up and the service is great. Lot of yachties around which is obvious since the restaurant is at the Royal Suva Yacht Club. This is a lovely place to have yummy food, especially fish.

Food is tasty and worth the price...unfortunately we were informed that most of the items on the menu were out of stock so we had to make do with what was left. A bit too small and congested to enjoy fully.

Rupert Murdoch Marries for the Fifth Time

Mr. Murdoch, the 93-year-old media mogul, married Elena Zhukova, a retired molecular biologist, Saturday at Moraga, his Bel Air vineyard estate in Los Angeles.

Rupert Murdoch, dressed in a black suit, hugs Elena Zhukova, his wife, who is carrying a bouquet of white flowers and wearing an off-the-shoulder white dress. Behind them are potted plants and greenery surrounding the windows of a house.

By Tammy LaGorce

Rupert Murdoch, who retired from the boards of Fox and News Corporation last year , walked down an outdoor aisle under blue skies to exchange vows on Saturday with Elena Zhukova, his fifth bride, at Moraga, his Tuscan-style vineyard estate in the hills of the Bel Air neighborhood of Los Angeles.

Ms. Zhukova, 67, carried a bouquet of white flowers and wore an ankle-length, off-the-shoulder white dress with a square neckline, reportedly designed by the London-based designer Emilia Wickstead ; Mr. Murdoch, 93, wore a dark suit with sneakers. Notable guests caught by paparazzi on the way into the ceremony included Robert K. Kraft, the owner of the New England Patriots, and Robert Thomson, the chief executive of News Corp.

The couple met through Mr. Murdoch’s third wife, Wendi Deng, according to The Daily Mail , which first reported their relationship last summer. Ms. Zhukova is a retired molecular biologist who immigrated to the United States from Moscow in 1991, just months before the Soviet Union collapsed. She was previously married to Alexander Zhukov, the billionaire energy investor.

There have been few public details about the couple’s courtship, with representatives for Mr. Murdoch staying mum, but The Daily Mail reported that shortly after meeting, Mr. Murdoch and Ms. Zhukova spent weeks vacationing together in the Mediterranean aboard the Christina O, a yacht that once belonged to Aristotle Onassis. Their engagement was announced in March.

Mr. Murdoch’s fifth marriage comes after a called-off engagement to Ann Lesley Smith, who is a retired dental hygienist and a conservative radio host. Last spring, he proposed to Ms. Smith but broke off the engagement after less than a month.

Ms. Zhukova’s marital history is less well documented. She met her first husband, Mr. Zhukov, now a British citizen, when both were students in the Soviet Union. Their marriage, during which they had a daughter, the entrepreneur and socialite Dasha Zhukova , lasted three years, according to The New Yorker.

A first walk down the aisle for Mr. Murdoch came in 1956, when he married Patricia Booker, a former flight attendant and model. They had a daughter, Prudence, before divorcing in 1967.

That same year, he married his second wife, Anna Maria Torv, then a journalist at one of his Australian newspapers. That union lasted 32 years, and they had three children: Elisabeth, Lachlan and James. All have worked for their father’s global empire; last year, Lachlan Murdoch was named Mr. Murdoch’s sole successor, becoming responsible for steering the media company his father started building from a small local newspaper in his native Australia 70 years ago. Mr. Murdoch maintains an emeritus role.

In 1999, when Mr. Murdoch and Ms. Torv divorced, he and his third wife, Ms. Deng, a television executive born in China, married. They had two daughters, Grace and Chloe, and divorced in 2013. He met Jerry Hall, who is a model, actress and one of Mick Jagger’s former wives, the same year. They married in 2016 and had no children together before divorcing in 2022 .

Mr. Murdoch and his family have a net worth of nearly $20 billion, according to Forbes . His publicly traded company, News Corp, owns a portfolio of news outlets, including The Wall Street Journal, Fox News and Sky News Australia, and the book publisher HarperCollins. According to The Cut , Ms. Deng and Ms. Hall both signed prenuptial agreements before marrying Mr. Murdoch.

Moraga, the wedding venue, is where Mr. Murdoch first hatched his 2019 deal to sell most of Fox’s movie studio, FX and National Geographic to Disney.
