The Yacht Club
Ratings and reviews, location and contact.
For $1 you can "join" the Ashville Yacht Club [dive bar]. The server was very friendly and prompt service. The drinks were delicious too. But be prepared, it's a DIVE BAR. Sticky floors, smokers out front, sticky tables. This is a place where you have... a few drinks for the experience and move on. More
Several people on here called The Yacht Club a "dive bar". I think those folks may have not ever had the opportunity to visit an actual "dive bar" because I really don't think The Yacht Club qualifies. Granted, The Yacht Club is not going to... extravagant in any sense of the word, but I wouldn't call it a "dive" either. Is it fancy inside? No. Is the customer base what you might call "stuffy, preppy, upper crust, boujiee or well to do"? No. Are there fine works of art hanging on the walls? No. Are the bathrooms smartly outfitted with marble, mahogany and brushed stainless steel accents? No. If that is the sort of place you are looking for, then just walk by The Yacht Club. If you want good mixed drinks, beer and spirits then stop in. They have several tables and large booths as well as a decent sized bar. There are 2 unisex bathrooms that are clean enough to use but I would not recommend spending must time contemplating your life while using their facilities. The customer base skews a bit younger (i.e. younger than 40) and I fairly certain we were the only folks there not tattooed or pierced in some way, but everyone was respectful and well behaved. Of course, some people were loud but is a bar and this is expected. There is no table service, so you have to order at the bar. Again, this is a bar not an Applebee's so don't expect to be waited on. The mixed drink menu is worth a look. We recommend the pain killers. Lost track of how many we had at one point which is often times the mark of an interesting evening. More
This place is a great little dive bar if you’re looking for a good drink and a laid back atmosphere. They have some of the best mojitos I have ever had. I always stop in to get one each time I am in town.
Based upon reviews we had read two friends & I in town for a vacation stopped in for a drink and something to eat. Getting the attention of the staff was next to impossbile. While it wasn't overly busy the staff that was there seemed... to be busy. We were finally able to order a drink but decided just to share 1 appetizer since the service seemed to be so slow. We order the reuben eggrols which eventually arrived and were hot but you really had to look to find anything other than sauerkraut in them. No need to go back during the remainder of our stay despite the fact it is in walking distance. More
We went there for the Live rock and roll music only to find out music is only on Saturday and Sunday from 3 pm to 6. I give the place 4 D’s: dank, dark, dirty, and dicey. The music on the system hard grunge. It... doesn’t help that a big burly long haired guy was in the doorway smoking. A bit intimidating. Is the food good? Don’t know not brave enough to try it. Tiki theme? Perhaps tiki from hell nothing about the place reminded me of the Caribbean!!! More
I've never seen a ruder, more miserable staff of people in my life. I've never seen anything like it. It was almost humourous to sit at the bar and see the abuse the bartenders gave the customers, only it was reality and not a joke.... Stay there long enough and watch them throw people out for ordering a drink. Unreal. More
We always went to this place because they poured a good drink. Well Amanda K. the bartender proved that ship has sailed, probably at the hand of management. We have always liked the Asheville dive bar atmosphere but if the future repeats this experience...no more.
when this place first opened a couple of years ago they had great tiki drinks, especially the mai-tai's. they were supposedly using a recipe similar to trader vic's original. the atmosphere was good for a small place and the big tiki's near the booths look... pretty cool. so do the tiki mugs that are available for customers to purchase. unfortunately, things have changed. we had mai-tai's there last night and they were terrible -- green in color and way too sweet. a mai-tai should be amber in color and not overly sweet. an inquiry revealed that ronrico rum was used, a real no-no for a mai-tai. the appetizers were a little better -- crab rangoon and conch fritters -- no complaints. the waitress was young and fairly attentive, but a little clueless; said it was her first night working there. the crowd was young and a little too loud for a tiki bar -- reminded me more of a sports bar or a college town bar. my main complaint is with the bartender: seemed more interested in impressing a couple of semi-drunk young ladies at the bar than making good drinks. get it together yacht club if you want to keep your regulars. More
Great service. Super casual vibe. Great drinks. Lots of beers on tap. Super friendly staff. Love it here!!
We visited to have our first drink of a girls weekend and all 4 of us sisters were asked to leave for the first time ever being asked to leave a bar because a couple of us went to the restroom at the same time.... The best part was the place we came to next was very kind, Claddagh...great employees, great atmosphere, and very cordial. More
Great place to sit and people watch looking out onto the sidewalk. The pineapple beer was awesome. Marley was our waitress and she was definitely friendly and so very helpful. The whole staff was great and they have lots of food and drink choices. Stop... by if you are in Asheville!! More
We stopped in for a quick shot before dinner and were told you needed to have one member per party. Turns out it’s only $1 to receive a one year membership. Drinks were cheap, with plenty of daily specials. Bartender was super chill and welcoming,... as was the other two employees. Outdoor seating where you can drink and smoke. We didn’t eat here. Tiki-style decor. Locals gathering to catch up. No frills. Loved it. More
We met some friends there for drinks and decided to order some food. It was incredible! The wings were straight from the Northeast. The fried tofu was the best I've ever eaten. The bartender was on top of it and the cook even came out... to clarify our order. The feel is pure dive bar but the food and service are top notch More
Great place for late afternoon cocktails and people watching. Full bar with top end bourbons. Fun atmosphere and live music on a Saturday afternoon.
Great theme. Nice welcome. Ok service. Lame credibility. Didn't try the food, but after trying to help out with the proper way to make their "signature island drink", which is not even remotely close to the actual cocktail served in the British Isles, even offering... to mix one for them at MY expense, I wouldn't expect much. They not only did not have any of the ingredients to make a real Pain Killer, they really didn't seem to care saying the fruity concoction with an umbrella on fire they claim is a pain killer, was a big seller. Wow! You should try the real thing and see how it sells - or if not just stop calling that country club ladies' botox cocktail you serve something it is not. Get a bottle of Pussers Navy Rum and read the directions for a Pain Killer (and at least have one bottle on display) or get another theme for your bar. Perfect spot for 18 year olds who think an island is something in the middle of a parking lot and good drinks have to have umbrellas and fire. More

About Our Rating Criteria
Official Site
Downtown Asheville can be a difficult spot to seek out a nice, dusty dive bar as the city has exploded with upscale dining and drinking options. Swanky cocktail bars exist about every other storefront in the heart of the city’s small urban core, but there are a handful of exceptions, Asheville Yacht Club one of the starkest. Hidden away down one of the downtown area’s side streets lies this divey tiki hut complete with fantastically potent drink options.
Opened in 2007, Asheville Yacht Club is young as far as dive bars go, but the vibe is well crafted and a welcome change from some of the other nearby options. As with many downtown bars, the reasonable Asheville weather means large open windows and a short patio with simple drink rail to give the feeling of Asheville Yacht Club drinking spilling out onto the sidewalk. On weekend evenings, this is a packed outdoor area without a ton of actual square footage, sometimes creating an intimidating exterior look despite a little wiggle room inside.
Photos taken inside inevitably look like they’ve been dipped in daquiri given the pervasiveness of multi-colored string lights.
The party starts inside, where an abundance of Christmas lights has created a kind of dive bar glow difficult to recreate any other way. It should come as no surprise that photos taken inside inevitably look like they’ve been dipped in daquiri given the pervasiveness of multi-colored string lights throughout the space. The Yacht Club theme is robust here, every available square inch occupied by something vaguely nautical. Pufferfish, spiders, fish skeletons, and that’s just the first ledge over the bar closest to the front door.
The surfaces here are wood, brick and then more brick and then some additional wood. Behind the bar that runs along Asheville Yacht Club’s righthand wall, thick wood shelving houses the bar’s liquor and provides a platform for all manner of knick knack. Bowling pins, painted skulls and a large Easter Island statue can be found here, enough visual stimulation to last at least a drink or two while sitting at the bar. A selection of glassware sits on a wood slat that hangs over the bar, yet another well-decorated surface home to another raft of ambiance-aiding items.
Booths run opposite the bar providing a bit of secluded drinking during times when the Asheville dive bar isn’t completely slammed (try a little day drinking). Tiki-themed statues serve as the pillars separating each booth, all of it capped with corrugated metal roofing that again plays well into the theme Bingo card adhered to by Asheville Yacht Club.
Know that these are strong, layered drinks in the tiki style where moderation isn’t just recommended but probably a requirement.
With a tiki theme comes tiki drinks, the selection extensive here though some of it requires a little bit of prior knowledge during heavy activity times when the bartenders aren’t flush with time to explain them all. Sitting at the bar and witnessing tiki drink after tiki drink dispensed, know that these are strong, layered drinks in the tiki style where moderation isn’t just recommended but probably a requirement to make it home. One remedy comes in the form of late night food available until midnight on weeknights and 1 AM on weekends, a simple selection best used as either foundation for or panicked response to an evening of drinking.
And for those uninitiated to North Carolina drinking regulations, bear in mind that all bars require a membership be paid, typically a $1 fee good for multi-year access to that particular bar. What looks like a cover at first glance is actually a quirk of North Carolina law and no reason to seek drinking elsewhere as all bars follow the same guidelines (and use the same technology to regulate entry).
After a heavy meal at one of Asheville’s great downtown restaurants, Asheville Yacht Club is the spot to settle the stomach. Stiff drinks, good vibe, tiki theme, enough to look as you coast into the evening, maybe a taco to cap everything off, among drinking options in the city’s urban center, Asheville Yacht Club serves a much needed and much appreciated purpose.
