You will then be charged for additional costs, including fuel, provisions, marina fees, and other expenses in your advanced provisioning allowance (APA). For larger and newer superyachts, you can pay up to $500,000 per week, not including the APA .

What is an Advance Provisioning Allowance, or APA?

The Advanced Provisioning Allowance acts as a bank account and is designed to cover expenses that cannot be fixed in advance, such as food and drink, fuel, and berthing fees. The APA is typically around 25 to 35%. of the yacht charter fee and is paid before the charter commences. The captain is responsible for logging all APA expenses, and you can view the expenses at any time during your boat charter. Any funds left in the APA at the end of your charter holiday are immediately refunded to you.

You can visit Greek Islands on your Turkish gulet charter vacation, but you will need to embark and disembark in a port in Turkey unless it has a Greek Charter Licence - which is very rare.

Mediterranean Yacht Charter Q&A

We advise booking your Mediterranean yacht rental at least three months in advance to ensure you get the yacht you desire. The longer you leave it, the fewer choices you will have to rent in the Mediterranean.

One of the wonderful aspects about renting a yacht in the Mediterranean is the exceedingly long season. For example in West Mediterranean locations like France, Spain and Italy, the best time to visit is usually from May until September. This balmy weather extends to well into October in East Mediterranean destinations like Greece, Croatia, Montenegro and Turkey.

For your Mediterranean superyacht charter, you will need to provide a completed charter agreement and 50% of the charter fee as a deposit. This is payable once the contract has been signed.

When booking a Mediterranean yacht rental, do keep in mind the costs that aren't included in the base rate, namely VAT and the APA (Advance Provisioning Allowance). The APA is usually paid in advance of the charter and is commonly set at 30% of the charter fee. This allowance covers expenses such as fuel, berthing, food and drinks, as well as any special requests. 

Please consult your yacht charter broker for any other costs you may need to factor in for your yacht charter in the Mediterranean.

Spring and fall offer more challenging conditions.
• Sardinia – One of the top sailing destinations in the Mediterranean, sailors come for the steady sea breezes, as well as the protected waters and safe harbors. Calm seas and warm waters welcome visitors in summer.

With warm (sometimes too warm) air and sea temperatures the season in the Mediterranean runs much longer than in more northern European climes, writes Lu Heikell .

Mediterranean sailing: The Balearic Islands

Located 50 miles off the Valencian coast of Spain, the Balearic Islands comprise the four main islands of Ibiza, Formentera, Mallorca and Menorca, and several smaller islands including Cabrera and Espalmador.

Together they represent one of the most popular cruising areas of the Mediterranean.

Harbours , marinas and anchorages are dotted at convenient distances around the coast, allowing a mix of remote, secluded bays and cosmopolitan towns.

In high season it is undoubtedly busy, both on land and sea, but as well as forming stepping-stones while heading through the Mediterranean, they are well worth a visit if you have the opportunity.

The inland towns and countryside are well worth exploring as a surprisingly tranquil place away from the crowded coastal areas.

Marina prices are always high but can be eye-watering in high season, but the Port de Baleares ports are well worth seeking out for more reasonable charges.

Charter yachts are widely available. Anchorages abound, so in the settled summer months there are plenty of options. Each island has its own ‘flavour’.

Ibiza, the westernmost island, is known as the party island, and sadly much of the coast has been built up, leaving little genuinely untouched coast.

Formentera, and the adjoining island of Espalmador, are for the most part low-lying islands close south of Ibiza.

Its reputation is of a more laid-back relaxed vibe, and is comparatively undeveloped. In Puerto del Espalmador there is a good almost all-round sheltered anchorage.

Mallorca is the largest island, the cultural and political hub, and Palma de Mallorca is the capital of the region.

At 50 miles ENE from Ibiza, it can be reached in a long day sail. Bahia de Pollensa is a good jumping-off point for those heading to Menorca, and a decent spot to provision up if necessary.

Menorca, the easternmost island, is known for its rugged beauty, and in Mahon has one of the largest natural harbours in the region.

The detached pontoons here are perhaps the best value berths to be found in the summer months.

Tuscany & the Tuscan Islands

The Tuscany coast runs from Viareggio and Pisa down to Monte Argentario in the south. Offshore lie the main Tuscan islands of Capraia, Elba and Giglio.

The Tuscan archipelago is a popular cruising ground for yachts and the patchwork of islands between Corsica and the mainland provide conveniently spaced stepping stones.

The islands are covered by the Tuscan Archipelago National Park, which has restricted areas on all the islands, and the islands of Gorgona, Pianosa and Montechristo are totally prohibited areas.

The Tuscan mainland offers little in the way of anchorages, but the major towns of Viareggio, Pisa and Livorno all offer visiting berths that shouldn’t break the bank, and fine bases to explore the renaissance city of Florence, the Etruscan coast and to experience the famous Viareggio autumn carnival.

And yes, I do have the picture of me ‘holding up’ the famous leaning tower!

The islands are a natural escape, with more opportunities to anchor , though certainly fewer than around the Balearics. Capraia lies just 16 miles east of Cap Corse and is a former prison island.

Aside from yacht traffic there is little to disturb this largely tranquil place.

Elba is the major island, well known as the subject of the Napoleonic palindrome ‘Able was I ere I saw Elba’.

The coast is much indented and there are numerous attractive harbours and anchorages.

Portoferraio is the main harbour, built under the walls of the 16th century citadel and lined with handsome 18th century merchants’ houses.

Depending on the wind direction good shelter can be found on the north and south coast, while Porto Azzurro on the east coast is another picturesque gem.

Isola del Giglio and Isola Giannutri are the southernmost islands and the anchorages here can be busy, but remain a cooler option than the mainland in the heat of the summer.

Greece and Turkey

Greece and Turkey are undoubtably two of the most popular destinations for sailors in the Mediterranean.

Whether you decide to base your own boat here, or charter a yacht for a shorter visit, few fail to return to this sailing paradise.

Depending on your experience levels, or your inclination, each region offers something for everyone – the gentler winds of the Ionian, the remoteness of the Peloponnese, the boisterous breezes blasting through the Cyclades islands, cosmopolitan Istanbul, or the late summer warmth of the Dodecanese and the southern Turkish coast.

You will find the stamp of history jostling with modern day life literally everywhere you go.

Our picks to escape the busiest spots in Greece would be the southern Peloponnese around Kalamata, northern Greece with Kavala, Thasos and Samothraki, and the Cyclades, Eastern Sporades and northern Dodecanese, using either Mitilini (Lesvos) or Lakki (Leros) as a base.

In Turkey, long-term berthing options are available at reasonable prices, and it has the benefit for UK visitors that stays here do not eat into your Schengen time allowance.

You can sail into the heart of the city in Istanbul, or explore the extensive natural anchorages between Bodrum and Finike on the south coast.

The Gulf of Gokova and the Gulf of Fethiye remain very unspoilt and hold some of our favourite anchorages.

Turkish food, Turkish hospitality and, of course, Turkish carpets are all legendary and will be found everywhere, though they say that the best carpets come from Milas, near Bodrum.

Mediterranean sailing: What you need to know

Mediterranean summers are generally warm, sometimes very hot, and settled.

Shoulder seasons are warmer than Atlantic coasts, with seasons extending the further south and east you go.

Sailing and swimming in southern Turkey in early November is not unusual.

Mediterranean sailing: Lessons learned from 2 years exploring Europe’s great sea

The Mediterranean has a lot to offer sailors all year round, writes Elena Manighetti. Among the highlights are fascinating cultural attractions, crystal clear water, and delicious food

With plenty of airports located along the most common cruising routes and cheap flights within Europe, keeping a yacht in the Med is easy and convenient. But what do cruisers do once the typical sailing season comes to an end?

My husband, Ryan, and I have spent two years cruising the Med on our Tayana 37 and can share some of our advice on wintering options, shoulder season cruising tips, and more.

Wintering options

Mediterranean winters feature regular storms (one to three per month on average) and the weather varies a lot between countries. For example, mainland Spain is mild and sunny, while the Ionian Islands of Greece are wet and cold. The low season typically runs between October and April.

There are three options for full-time liveaboards in the winter: secure a six-month deal in a marina; haul the boat out; or keep sailing. Most cruisers leave their yacht in a protected berth or on the hard and fly home for the winter. For this reason, winter berths need to be booked far in advance. Yard spaces are generally available until the end of September.

Some cruisers spend the low season aboard in marinas, occasionally flying home. This is a pleasant and inexpensive way to see the winter through. Water and electricity are usually included in a winter deal and car rentals are as cheap as €5 per day at major airports.

British couple Nichola and Colin Wright have been cruising the Mediterranean on their Kelly Peterson 44 Emerald for six years. They’ve spent each winter living aboard in marinas, staying in Marina di Ragusa (Sicily), Agios Nikolaos (Crete), Roccella Ionica (Italy), and Cartagena (Spain).

“We’ve really enjoyed our winter marina stays,” explains Nichola, “as they’ve given us time for land travel while not having to worry about the boat and weather.” The couple have got involved in social activities organised by the liveaboard communities, including barbecues, yoga lessons, celestial navigation classes, and more.

There are pockets of overwintering liveaboards all around the Med. Some of the most popular Mediterranean wintering spots include Valencia and Barcelona in mainland Spain – both excellent options with major airports nearby. Cartagena is also a delightful town with an active winter community. From here, you can head to the Balearic Islands, France, and Corsica.

In Sicily, Licata and Marina di Ragusa are favourites with cruisers returning every winter. Catania airport is two hours away. Come spring you can sail towards Greece and Turkey, or Sardinia and the Balearic Islands. Some 50 miles south of Sicily lies Malta. Valletta hosts a small liveaboard community. Berth prices are high, but the historic city is gorgeous and the airport is just around the corner.

In Tunisia, Monastir and Hammamet get fantastic reviews from those who’ve visited and offer good value boat work. Transport to the airport is cheap, although flights are more costly than from Europe. In the spring, you can set sail for Sicily, Sardinia, or Greece.

In Greece, Lefkas, Preveza, and Crete are good choices, although flight options are limited in low season. Athens is well connected but more expensive and cold. In the spring you can explore the Greek Islands, head to Turkey, or sail to Croatia.

In Turkey, Finike, Marmaris, and Bodrum are popular with liveaboards. After winter you can continue cruising Turkey or head west. Airports are two hours from the marinas; Bodrum has its own.

Boat maintenance can be carried out in most of the marinas mentioned and their associated yards. As a rule of thumb, Italy and Malta are more expensive both in terms of yard fees and labour. Good value yard deals are available in Monastir, Almerimar, Crotone (Italy), Kilada (Peloponnese), and Preveza.

For cruisers with itchy feet who opt to sail year-round, trips need to be planned to allow shelter in marinas from the worst storms. This is affordable in the low season, but locals and those who have secured a winter deal usually snap up the most protected pontoons. Not all harbours are sheltered from every direction, so make sure to research a marina before you commit to it for a storm.

Seeking dry and mild weather, winter sailors often head east towards Crete, Turkey, Cyprus, and Israel. Alternatively, heading just out of the Med to southern Portugal offers good weather and well-protected anchorages. A careful eye on the forecast, confidence in your boat and ground tackle, and cold weather gear (including a heater) are essential.

Cartagena in Spain’s Murcia region

Dutch couple Marjolein and Hermen Doornenbal have sailed their Trintella 3A ketch in the Mediterranean for two years. They spent their first winter sailing from the Balearics to Tunisia and their second cruising in Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, and Israel.

“We live on our boat, it’s our home, so we sail year-round,” says Marjolein. In winter they have to move anchorages often, due to changeable weather and frequent storms which, she admits, can be quite nerve wracking. Their advice? “Don’t do any passages longer than two days and keep a close eye on the forecast.”

Winter berths

Winter deals usually last six to eight months, so it’s important to pick the right marina if you’re planning to live aboard full-time. Key factors to consider when choosing include:

• Location: What is the area surrounding the marina like? Is there a big town nearby? Do the restaurants and bars close down for the winter? Could you drive your car from your home country?
• Proximity to an airport: If you need to fly home often, you’ll have to pick a marina close to a big airport and with good transport links. If you plan to travel only for Christmas, then access to the airport is less of an issue.
• Immigration rules: Can you live aboard in the country for more than three months? Can you apply for a temporary residence? Do you need to pay tax on your boat if you stay longer than three months?
• Boat repair facilities: Research each marina and their associated yard to find out what services are available.
• Community: Would you like to spend a lot of time with other liveaboards, getting involved in social events? Or would you prefer having a quiet winter in a sleepy marina with a few friendly neighbours?
• Weather and shelter: Check the historical weather records: what direction are the winter storms usually from? Does the harbour wall protect the marina from that direction? How wet and cold does it usually get?
• Price range: Enquire for winter deal quotes well in advance and compare them. What’s included in the price? Some deals come with free water and electricity. Marinas with bad fouling often offer a free lift and pressure wash in the spring.
• Car rental options: If you’d like to explore inland, the best deals on car hire are available at big airports via advanced online booking. You can usually rent the same vehicle for up to 29 consecutive days. Car rentals far from airports are typically more expensive.

Spring and autumn

The shoulder seasons tend to bring the fiercest winds across the Mediterranean. The weather is often unsettled, with strong winds followed by spells of light breezes and confused seas. Last spring we experienced multiple 40-60 knot storms in the Balearic Islands, Sardinia, and Sicily in April and May. Between August and November 2019, the Balearics were hit by several big storms that caused flooding and much damage.

That said, you can still sail safely in spring and autumn by staying within close range of marinas when the weather is unsettled. This option can take a lot of patience as you’ll spend time waiting out storms and weather windows to move are short. But if you persist you’re rewarded with empty anchorages, quiet towns, and cheap mooring fees.

Three possible routes for a relaxed summer cruise

Peak season

As summer approaches, the Mediterranean starts to become crowded with local motorboats, charter fleets, and cruising yachts enjoying the hot, calm weather. Marina prices skyrocket and berths are hard to book, so it’s best to stick to the abundant free anchorages. The busiest months are July and August. Popular bays are so packed you’ll regularly hear skippers arguing with their neighbours about being too close.

Want to avoid the worst of the crowds? Head for less-travelled areas by the end of June. Avoid anchorages close to charter bases and famous hotspots like Shipwreck Beach on Zakynthos or Port de Soller on Mallorca.

Some quieter areas include mainland Spain and France, south Sardinia, Tunisia, the northern Aegean, the Peloponnese, and Turkey. Marina prices in these places tend to be cheaper, too.

If you don’t fancy paying exorbitant marina fees, stay clear of northern Sardinia, the Amalfi coast, Liguria, Malta, and Palma de Mallorca. For affordable berths in the Balearics, sign up to Ports IB – the local, state-run marina network. In Greece, while you need to pay a cruising tax (€33 per month up to 40ft), town quays are low-cost or free.

Seven Seas Splendor

Debuted in September 2021, the 746-passenger (double occupancy), 548-crew member Seven Seas Splendor is the newest ship within the Regent fleet. Seven Seas Splendor – along with most of the line's other ships – takes opulence to the next level by equipping each suite with its own private balcony. Other standard in-room amenities include interactive flat-screen TVs, luxurious bath products, bathrobes and slippers, signature queen-size beds and dining tables for two. There are 10 suite categories available, ranging from the smallest Veranda (307 square feet) and Deluxe Veranda suites (308 to 361 square feet) to the largest Regent (4,443 square feet) and Master suites (1,895 to 2,108 square feet). 

Guests have a wide array of things to do while on board. Spend your days relaxing at the spa, playing paddle tennis or bocce ball, working up a sweat on the jogging track or taking a dip in the ship's two whirlpools and two pools, one of which is an infinity-edge pool that stretches along the edge of the ship, providing swimmers with exceptional views of the ocean. At night, enjoy one of five shows at the onboard theater. 

When it comes to food, Seven Seas Splendor offers eight eateries ranging from casual to fine dining. Enjoy your breakfast alfresco at La Veranda and grub down for lunch at the Pool Grill buffet. Viking Saturn

Debuted in May 2023, the adults-only Viking Saturn has the capacity to hold 930 passengers and 465 crew members. Travelers love the ship's clean Scandinavian design and compact size, which allows it to dock in smaller ports that larger cruise ships cannot reach.

On board, travelers have access to a slew of amenities, including a fitness center, a spa, a library, a state-of-the-art theater, a hair salon, an infinity pool and more. A resident historian is also on board to offer lectures and educational programming about upcoming port destinations. When hunger strikes, Viking Saturn offers an array of dining options, from fresh seafood at World Café to afternoon tea service at Wintergarden to traditional Norwegian cuisine at Mamsen's. Starting at 270 square feet, standard staterooms come equipped with king-size mattresses (which can be converted into two twin beds), flat-screen TVs, full-size verandas and bathrooms with heated floors. The 930-passenger Viking Sky – which debuted in February 2017 – receives rave reviews from past cruisers for its port-heavy itineraries (fares include one complimentary excursion per port) and luxurious, comfortable staterooms. Cabins offer between 270 and 1,448 square feet of space and include balconies, complimentary Wi-Fi access, flat-screen TVs and bathrooms with heated floors, among other amenities. Those who opt for an upgraded stateroom or suite are treated to additional perks, like priority reservations at the spa and specialty restaurants.

Viking Sky's activities include classes at the fitness center, treatments at the spa and destination-focused lectures. Viking Mars

Viking's newest ship, the Viking Mars accommodates 930 passengers and, since it's a smaller vessel, it can dock in many ports where some of the larger ocean-faring cruise ships can't reach. The all-veranda accommodations on this ship, which debuted in May 2022, range in size from around 270 square feet to 1,448 square feet. In-room amenities include free Wi-Fi access, flat-screen TVs, safes, minibars filled with drinks and snacks, robes, slippers and 24-hour room service.

Visitors will find a relaxing spa, a hair salon, a yoga area and a well-equipped indoor fitness center (plus an outdoor fitness center) aboard the ship. Those looking to unwind with a book in one hand and a cocktail in the other should snag a cozy spot in The Living Room. Like other Viking ships, the Viking Mars offers educational programming, lectures, cooking classes and more on board.

Cruisers can also enjoy amenities like the main pool and hot tub, the infinity pool, the cinema, the theater, a jazz lounge and various bars. Dining options on this ship include Manfredi's Italian Restaurant, Aquavit Terrace, World Café, The Chef's Table and The Kitchen Table.

An adults-only, LGBTQ-friendly cruise ship, Resilient Lady has a maximum capacity of 2,762 passengers and carries 1,150 crew members. Viking Jupiter

Debuted in February 2019, Viking Jupiter is the cruise line's sixth ocean vessel. The ship sleeps up to 930 guests in luxurious staterooms that include everything from large bathrooms to comfortable king-sized beds. As an added bonus, each room is equipped with free Wi-Fi access.

Travelers will have the opportunity to indulge in several onboard activities. They can visit the spa's snow grotto and chill beneath the snowflakes, go for a swim in the infinity pool or let their worries melt away in the hot tub. The Bar and The Living Room offer additional spaces to unwind with a cocktail or mingle with fellow cruisers.

For afternoon tea and light snacks, travelers can stop by Wintergarden, or for a heartier meal, the main dining room, Manfredi's Italian Restaurant or World Café offer scrumptious European delicacies, Chinese fare and everything in between. In the evening, cruisers can catch a live show in The Theater or a destination-themed movie in one of two onboard cinemas.

Cruisers seeking an intimate experience should consider booking a trip aboard Silversea's Silver Moon, one of the line's newest ships. Debuted in June 2021, Silver Moon accommodates just 596 passengers. And with 411 crew members, travelers can expect an attentive experience.

One standout amenity is the Sea And Land Taste (S.A.L.T.) program. The dining experience aims to introduce passengers to their destinations through food. On board, the S.A.L.T. Viking Star

Debuted in 2015, Viking Star was the fleet's first ocean liner. Welcoming up to 930 passengers, the ship features all-veranda staterooms ranging from 270 to 1,448 square feet. The Owner's Suite offers a dining area that can seat six, an ocean view dry sauna and a 12-seat boardroom, among other amenities.

Beyond their rooms, passengers will find a spa, several shops, a theater that hosts live performances and lectures, two cinemas for screening movies and two pools, including a glass-backed infinity pool cantilevered off the stern.

There are eight dining options to choose from, all with no additional charge or fee. For fine dining, there's The Restaurant, Manfredi's Italian Restaurant and The Chef's Table, which touts a multicourse tasting menu with wine pairings. For a more casual atmosphere, passengers can stop at Mamsen's for Norwegian deli-style eats or the Wintergarden for afternoon tea.

Stella was our principle leader. She was terrific, and could not do enough for us. She was always bright and happy and full of information. We were able to leave our luggage on board until about midday when Stella ordered a taxi for us to go to the airport. The other guides on our optional excursions were also very good.

The ship, crew, captain and tour director were all nice, professional and caring. Food was very good, ship was in excellent condition.

I most enjoyed Monemvasia and Aegina. They were charming places that are not as well known. I also enjoyed the other passengers - it was a very congenial group

Thea was our tour director and she was sweet, fun and very professional. She took excellent care of all the passengers. She kept everything fun while making sure that everyone was happy with the plans. She took care to plan each day - which was difficult since our itinerary changed due to the weather. The captain and crew kept us in good weather by changing the itinerary and we thought that was a great idea! 

I liked the itinerary and the ship when I saw it in your promotional materials. It sounded unique, educational and fun. And it was! Weather conditions forced this trip to run in reverse. That did not seem to negatively affect the itinerary in any way. The group was international, well-traveled, congenial, curious and just like us!!! The crew was consistently pleasant and competent. Everyone tried hard to please. The itinerary was unique in that popular tourist sites were visited by ship. The pace was comfortable. We appreciated the opportunity to explore on our own at the end of each excursion.

[I  most enjoyed the] Ancient theater at Epidaurus, Olympia and Delphi. These are amazing ancient places that I'd heard about for a long time. They were beautiful in the springtime with blossoming trees and wildflowers all about. Sailing through the Corinth Canal was a nice experience too. [I least enjoyed] Monemvasia. This wasn't described on the original itinerary, so I wasn't prepared to know what to look for here. Apparently, the ship passes here in the night when the itinerary is followed the other way around the Peloponnese. Activities seemed to be shopping (never interesting for more than a few minutes) and hiking to the top of the rock. (This would probably have been fine, if I'd been prepared with hiking boots and a walking stick, but not knowing what to expect, I wasn't).

It was mostly an older crowd with a few younger couples thrown in. They came from a variety of English-speaking countries. One evening at dinner we noted that no two couples were from the same place. We had US, Scotland, Canada, England and Australia represented. We love that! They were well-traveled and used to being part of a group like this. Everyone was on time, enthusiastic, and congenial. We enjoyed them!

I don't think you would choose to travel on a motor sailor if you want absolutely luxurious accommodations. That being said, our cabin (on the top deck) was spacious enough with full bath. Everything was very clean and comfortable. We appreciated the small safe. Hair dryer, tissues, shampoo, soap and shower gel were provided along with plenty of clean towels.

There were only two negatives: 1) Since we were all on the same schedule, we tended to want to shower at the same time. There was never enough hot water to go around.  2) The boat does not have stabilizers. So, when it was rocky it was impossible to move about. We needed to wear our seasickness patches throughout the trip.

The food gets 5 stars! It was truly outstanding, especially for a group of this size. There were always choices; food was plentiful and varied. What was supposed to be hot was hot; what was supposed to be cold was cold. No one lost any weight on this trip! The only problem was a buffet meal served when the boat was underway in turbulent water. It was impossible to walk with food, even though the staff tried hard to help. Lots of people (not me!) skipped that meal.

Joseph was on the ball and had everything under control. He was personable and I think he really believes in this itinerary and wants it to succeed. Jenny was charming and knows her stuff. She gave some good lectures in addition to leading most excursions. She was not visible when she was not providing a scheduled presentation and she was not available to be introduced at our initial meeting. That caused me to take a little longer to warm to her and to appreciate her knowledge.

Andrew always does a great job for us. He is excited about travel and he is always prompt and responsive. I was worried about making connections after this tour and he contacted the ship's folks several times to allay my worries. And sure enough, as soon as I boarded the ship they knew exactly what I needed. It all worked out perfectly! We recommend you all the time.

At this season [April], be prepared for all kinds of weather. Bring layers, from short-sleeved shirts to a down jacket. And definitely don't forget the rain gear. Hiking boots were generally not necessary. Good walking/hiking shoes typically did the trick. Read some Greek mythology and history before you go. Spring is surprisingly beautiful. There are wildflowers everywhere and the trees are in bloom.

• Antiquity to Byzantium

The food, cleanliness of the ship, and friendliness of the staff on the Futura made for a wonderful and relaxing week. I loved lounging on the top deck, reading and watching the beautiful scenery. Also getting to swim off the boat. The visit to the restaurant (I can't remember the name) at one of the stops that involved a long bus ride with hairpin turns, a look at some donkeys, a tour of an old monastery, and eating under a bunch of cured meat was not to my liking at all.

The low price of this trip was very appealing! I had never been on a small boat like this and found I loved it, and would travel this way again.

I loved our cabin and was very glad we upgraded. There was a musty or dank smell in the bathroom occassionally. Also the noise level in the dining room made conversation with anyone very difficult and frustrating.

I thought the food was great - fresh and varied- and was very appreciative of the staff's kind accomodation to my vegetarian preference.

Anna was the least satisfactory part of my time on the Futura. Although she did seem to respond to individual requests, I didn't need anything specific. But she did not "lead" our trip in the sense of giving us a sense of time and place - she left that to the local guides, some of whom were good, others not. Schedules were not posted until the morning. She seemed a bit ditzy and almost ephemeral - sweet and young that is not what I look for in a trip leader.

The only suggestion I have is that I didn't know that British pounds are rarely used in Croatia - better to bring kuna only.

AdventureSmith is a very professional organization that is a pleasure to work with. This was our third, but certainly not last trip with AS. The trip included 5 days in Athens, Greece and a week aboard the Sea Cloud through Lindblad. We found Lindblad a little rigid to work with during the planning stages.  In Greece, they were outstanding. The Sea Cloud is a gorgeous sailing barque. The crew, both Lindblad and Sea Cloud, were warm, gracious and a delight to sail with. My wife had always wanted to visit Greece. I love sailing. The combination got us.

I think Santorini was a top destination. It's a beautiful island that I would stay on. The smaller islands were interesting as well.

Room was, as expected, tight quarters. It's an old ship, after all. The public areas are great. The upper deck is a beautiful place for cocktails, or just relaxing. Seeing the Sea Cloud under sail is a real treat.

Food was excellent. I think I probably gained weight, but that's my fault. I preferred the buffet dinners to the served ones. Variety was excellent. Lot's of great salads. Good seafood and fresh fish.

All of the people leading the expedition are true professionals. They know their stuff. One of the regular speakers has her PHD in archeology and is a real expert on the region and Greek history.  I was really impressed with all of them. The two regular guides are Greek and have many years experience in the areas we visited. One of our Lindblad guides, a native Greek, was much too insistent on trying to tell us all about the Greek Orthodox religion. As a non-Christian, I found it a little off-putting. She knew her stuff, but seemed anxious to proselytize...

Between AdventureSmith and Lindblad, we were well prepared. We made our own flight arrangements, but AS was very helpful. I cannot say enough good about our experience both with AdventureSmith and with Lindblad.

TOP 5 yachts for the Mediterranean charter according to Sailica.

Charter is the most common type of yachting trips in the world. More and more people prefer it instead of going the traditional and expensive way — actually buying a boat. The Europe’s charter fleet has more than fifteen thousand hulls of different types, sizes and manufacturers. Weekly during the high season in Europe, about eight thousand yachts are rented, and the total turnover of charter funds exceeds 14 billion dollars.

Most charter boats are sailing yachts. It is the sail that gives maximum freedom that is so much beloved by yachtsmen. Your fuel is always with you — it’s a wind that does not depend on entering the marina or your travel budget, it either is, or it’s not. You absolutely have no interest in knowing the price per barrel and you have heard nothing about the 1973 oil embargo — only the weather forecast you care about, only hardcore.

Of course, you will need some fuel, but not as much as those who like to burn a couple of hundred litres of it on the way to the neighbouring island. And finally, the sail is ideal for environmentalists. Perhaps, it’s not that obvious, but we both know that sailing the whole week around the Italian islands on a twenty-meter motor yacht is just as chopping a couple of hundred-year-old Sequoias. But, let’s get back to the track.

Anyone who is going to book a yacht, ideally, faces a choice of hundreds of different options, for example, here at Sailica.com. In the end, the one narrows down to a few yachts meeting all the desired criteria. There are lots of criteria, but we will consider only the most common ones and those which we think are important. According to statistics, the absolute majority of trips in the Mediterranean Sea during the high season, is done by families or the companies of close friends. Most of them prefer monohull boats instead of catamarans, and newer yachts instead of the old ones. At the same time, both are popular having the four- and five-cabin configuration.

1. Hanse 588 — 2017

The Hanse shipyard is one of the oldest yacht building companies existing nowadays and serves as a perfect example of the well-known “German quality”. The manufacturer positions itself as an innovator and it has the ground for it. It was due to Hanse that the technology, such as the mainsail, curled straight into the boom, quickly found its place in the industry.

Hanse 588 is the biggest monohull boat in our top list and we think of it as the most suitable one for a family holiday. The yacht was built according to all the trends and innovations in the industry: a smooth 55-foot deck, all the ropes are held under the teak cover, all the winches are electric, the mainsail is twisted into a boom. Besides that, it is equipped with a hardtop — a kind of flybridge, a very comfortable and hard bimini, that we are used to have on catamarans. That’s why this boat is one of the best for the Mediterranean.

2. Oceanis 48 — 2017

The famous Oceanis models of the Beneteau shipyard are the boats of category A, designed to go through any conditions. They are equally well suited for the beloved Blue water cruising (thanks to a free deck and a folding platform in the stern), as well as for crossing the Atlantic Ocean (thanks to its practicality, durability and huge tanks for water and fuel). The boat is equipped with a stern galley with a grill and a large genoa, so you won’t have to deal with a mainsail (unless you want to), and huge portholes which allow you to enjoy the views even when you are in the cabin.

3. Sun Odyssey 440 — 2018

Being the “smallest” yacht in our top list, though, it is an indisputable proof that, unlike the car industry, the shipbuilding is France’s strong spot. Forty-four feet of the vessel can contain everything you may demand from a yacht, even a larger size than Sun Odyssey 440.

At your disposal are the electric winches, a maneuvering thruster and a huge, for a boat of this size, stern and a master cabin. And if you want — you will get a four-cabin version, which is no less comfortable, due to the incredible Jeanneau ergonomic design. In fact, the Sun Odyssey 440 is an excellent example of a stable development of the model, which has not been failing the shipyard fans around the world for years now.

4. Lagoon 620 — 2018

Did you think that we forgot about you, a fan of catamarans? Finally, we reached the point why you started reading this article in the first place. Undoubtedly, Lagoon 620 is the flagship of the French manufacturer and our top list. Renting this baby will cost you a pretty penny, but it’s worth it, isn’t it?

The catamaran is really huge. You’ll see it right away if you’ve ever sailed one. The average size of these “floating villas” is 40−45 feet, which contain all the possible goodies fans of hedonism love. The size of this beauty is a staggering 62 feet, which is quite common for the shipyard boats.

As part of the charter package, you will be offered a six-cabin version. All the cabins are huge, have private bathrooms and personal outlets to the deck. And, of course, it has a giant cockpit and a mess deck with a large galley and a large vertical two-chamber refrigerator. What else can one dream of?

Yet, some more things. The mainsail is curled into a boom. Besides the nets and cushions, there is a small cockpit with a refrigerator and a bar in the bow. There is also a giant flybridge with two control posts, which the manufacturer itself calls a “second deck”. And finally, our favorite feature — the bottom lighting around the boat, to watch fish, just like on the superyachts.

5. Bali 4.0 — 2017

This is the medium one, however, only in terms of size. Bali can be referred to as Mersedess-Benz in the world of catamarans. This very model is some sort of the S-Class. Lagoon is, rather, Citroen. Nothing personal. The main feature of Bali may be its attachment of the mess deck to the cockpit, which gives space, incredible for the catamaran of this size. The boat is very ergonomic and aesthetic. It is a real treasure for the lovers of exquisite design combined with practicality and comfort.

You will most likely get a four-cabin version, but the cabins are really spacious, the portholes are huge, and the mess deck attached to the cockpit, makes you feel like you are on a much larger yacht. The flybridge with cushions for sunbathing is more like a landing strip of the average airfield in the developing countries.

Summing up, we can surely say that nowadays the charter fleet can meet the needs of any, even the most demanding clients, but still continues to grow by days. Who knows, maybe someday soon, one will be able to customize an ideal boat just before the taking trip. Let’s wait and witness the future of charter yachts together.

The 7 Best Adult-Only Mediterranean Cruises

I ’ll be honest, since my children have grown and are now adults, I love nothing more than an adults-only trip. Where I once looked for kids clubs and splash pools, I now look for peace and quiet and good cocktails. And when it comes to cruising, I look for that relaxation and time away from kids, more so than on any other kind of trip. 

I’ve been on family cruises and, while they are great, there’s nothing like cruising in quiet and with adult company only. The Mediterranean is a beautiful place for cruising, full of lazy stop-offs, swim stops, and historical land excursions. Most kids wouldn’t like these kinds of laid-back, low-key cruises anyway. All the more for us adults to enjoy! 

To get you started on which Mediterranean cruises to try for an adults-only cruising experience, here’s my pick of the seven best options.

1. Variety Cruises

Unexplored greece.

This is one of the most laid-back and casual cruises I’ve ever been on around the Mediterranean. This Variety Cruises exploration of the small, lesser-visited Greek Islands begins in Athens; stops off at Amorgos, Ikaria, Serifos, Lipsi, Iraklia, Patmos, and Kalymnos; and ends back in Athens. Aboard the Pan Orama , which has capacity for 48 guests, is slow-paced, and is easy going. 

There’s no dress code for dinner, no set place you have to sit for meals, and there’s plenty of free time to wander around the islands or book an excursion if you want. There’s a sun deck on board and a bar, but your time mainly revolves around swim stops and island life. These lesser-visited Greek Islands don’t have ports big enough for large cruise liners, so there are fewer tourists around, which makes every stop peaceful and relaxing. Cabins are comfortable, if a little basic, but you don’t spend much time in them; there’s too much to discover on the islands and in the quiet little secluded bays where you’ll stop off for a swim in each day.

2. Virgin Voyages

French daze & ibiza nights.

Beginning and ending in Barcelona, Spain, this seven-night Virgin Voyages cruise stops off at Marseille in France, Cannes, Mallorca, and Ibiza in Spain. Cabins range from the basic insider cabin to the mega rockstar quarters, though to be fair, the basic insider cabin is pretty rockstar as it is. These cabins sleep up to four people, with bunk beds, and are very comfortable and verging on luxury. 

Don’t let the bunk beds throw you off, though, Virgin Voyages is a strictly over-18s-only cruise line, so the four berth cabins are for four adults. The mega rockstar quarters is something else, with its own private hot tub and a taste of what life is like for a movie star. Ships have spas, swimming pools, fitness suites, running tracks, nightly entertainment, and even a tattoo parlor. The ships have everything you’d want from a top-class resort, so it’s almost a shame there are no at-sea days on this cruise.

3. Emerald Cruises

French & italian rivieras .

Setting off from the port of Rome, this 8-day cruise with Emerald Cruises takes you to Corsica, Calvi, Portofino, Menton in France, and ends in Nice. On board one of Emerald Cruises’ luxury yachts, there’s room for 100 guests in a range of very comfortable cabins. The terrace suite is stunning and includes your own little sun deck with loungers, but even the most basic stateroom is a cut above other cruise cabins. 

Life aboard the yacht is a low-key affair that centers around the sun deck, bars and restaurants, and the swimming pool, but there is also a wellness area with a spa. What I found really impressive about this cruise is that almost all of your meals are included. All breakfasts, all dinners, and six lunches are provided on board, which is quite unusual for a cruise line.

4. Scenic Cruises

Authentic andalucia.

Beginning in Malta, this Mediterranean cruise with Scenic Cruises stops off at the island of Gozo, Trapani in Italy, Carloforte, Menorca, Formentera, Cartagena, Marbella in Spain, Tangier in Morocco, Portimao in Portugal, and ends in Lisbon. I liked the laid-back pace of this cruise and it stops at some glorious destinations. I also liked that flights to and from the UK were included. 

This is an all-inclusive cruise, which I found unusual, but it’s basically just like any all-inclusive resort on the sea. Each guest receives butler service while all food and drinks are included. Excursions are also included in the price of the cruise, which does mean you’ve paid for all excursions up front. This is an expensive cruise and if you don’t like going on the land excursions, it isn’t for you because you’re paying for them no matter what. But for anyone who likes to do everything on offer on their cruise and likes to keep the drinks flowing, this is a great option.

5. Virgin Voyages

Adriatic sea & greek gems .

Virgin might just be the best-known cruising company offering adults-only cruises and one look at their ships shows you why. This cruise with Virgin Voyages begins in Athens and stops off at Split, Dubrovnik, Kotor, Corfu, and ends back in Athens. There are 2 at-sea days so you can make the most of everything the ship has to offer, from swimming pools and spas, to arcades and karaoke. 

There’s even a record shop on board so you can pick up some vinyls while you sail. It’s all about relaxing and having fun adult-style — whatever that means to you. So if all you want to do is lounge in the sun on the deck, there’s plenty of space to do just that, but if you want to sing karaoke and spend time in the casino, this cruise has you covered.

6. Viking Cruises

Ancient mediterranean treasures.

This 8-day cruise around the Mediterranean with Viking Cruises begins its journey in Istanbul in Turkey before stopping in Troy and Ephesus and then moving onto Rhodes in Greece, Crete, and ending in Athens. Life aboard the Viking Ocean ship is geared towards adult entertainment and includes a spa, fitness center, shopping, a beauty salon, a theater, a cinema, and restaurants. 

Cabins and suites are all comfortable, if a little basic. They are hotel standard, though, not quite luxury level. There’s an indoor and an outdoor pool with plenty of sun deck areas for sunbathing. There’s plenty to do on board the ship, but there are no at-sea days on this cruise, so unless you want to skip one of the land excursions, you’ll be packing in the delights of the ship around your adventures. There’s a strict no-under-18s rule on Viking Cruises, so you’re sure of an adults-only experience.

7. P&O Cruises

Mediterranean 18 nights .

If you know anything about P&O Cruises, you’ll know they are not a strictly adults-only cruise line, however, they do reserve a couple of their ships for adults-only voyages. This Mediterranean cruise is quite long at 18 nights, but it does depart and end in the UK, sailing you all the way to the Med and back. Because there’s quite a way to sail from the UK, the first stop-off is on day 5 and is in Cadiz in Spain. From there, the ship stops at Valencia, Ajaccio in France, Genoa, Rome, Naples, Gibraltar, and Lisbon before heading back to the UK.

There are plenty of at-sea days to enjoy the spa, swimming pools, art gallery, theater, and restaurants and bars. Cabins are stylishly decorated and some have verandas. With a capacity for 2,094 guests, this cruise falls somewhere between small-boat intimacy and large-liner luxury.

Despite traveling the world professionally for over a decade, I actually went on my first cruise fairly recently. For my inaugural voyage, I decided to do it up with a seven-night cruise through Greece with Celebrity Cruises , and, boy, am I glad that I did. I loved the variety of activities on board, along with all the stops and sightseeing. You could do as much or as little as you wanted, whether you choose to stay on board or venture off when the ship docks. My husband and I enjoyed exploring Greece's many shops and restaurants, and also equally loved dressing up for the cruise's “evening chic” dinners .

This cruise, like most, was all-inclusive, which took the guesswork out of choosing activities and dining à la carte. But, I can't say I had the same ease with my trip packing list . At first, I was concerned about all the outfits and accessories I wanted to bring, but as a seasoned carry-on-only traveler , I quickly culled down many of my options to these seven must-have Mediterranian cruise outfits, along with carefully curated (and versatile) accessories to match. Plus, you won’t have to spend a fortune to look fashionable - prices start at just $42.

Petal & Pup Devlin Linen Crop Tank

Breathable fabrics like these cotton separates from Petal & Pup are ideal for Mediterranean cruises because they can be warm during the day and get cooler at night. The crop top is flirty and feminine with a square neckline and the pants have a forgiving elastic waistband. As a carry-on traveler, I’m a huge proponent of matching sets because of their versatility as they can be worn separately to create multiple outfits. Both options are available in two colors, they’re easy to care for during travel; simply hand wash them and lay them flat to dry.

Yexpine Sleeveless Cotton Shirtdress With Ruffle Hem

This cotton-linen blend shirtdress with a flounce hem is a great item to bring on vacations. The flattering silhouette is a half-button front with a swing body that keeps you comfortable while looking stylish and chic. It also works great as a beach cover-up or a tunic layered over leggings. The stand-up collar offers a dressier accent, which made it an excellent choice to wear when we went to the chic Blu Blu Cafe in Mykonos right next to the port. It’s available in seven striking colors; I liked it so much that I purchased the dress in two colors - blue and khaki. Add a belt like this one from Patricia Nash to give the dress more shape for those fancier outings. 

Spanx Carefree Crepe Vest Top

Spanx makes some of the best travel clothing , so whenever I’m heading out on an assignment or vacation, I always pack one or two items from the brand. This button-front vest is tailored for a fitted look with faux flap pockets in the brand’s signature machine-washable crepe fabric. Pair it with the matching shorts or the linen bottoms from outfit no. 1 , and you've got yourself a bonafide cruise outfit.

These trouser-style shorts fit like a dream with an easy pull-on design and functional pockets to hold all your essentials. The longer, 6-inch inseam makes it a sophisticated piece that can be worn to elegant restaurants and museums. Match it back to the Trovata blouse listed below to create a cute ensemble for sightseeing during one of your stops. It was my top choice during our stop in Santorini visiting the Archaeological and Folklore Museums. Meetrendi Floral Midi Dress

This flowy midi-dress is lightweight and offered in 10 beautiful prints perfect for any season or cruise destination. The smocking around the waistline creates a slimming effect and the ruffle sleeves lend to romantic detailing. Made of 100 percent polyester for comfort and stretch, it’s also machine washable. It’s great for casual cruise nights and can even work for date nights and outdoor picnics when you’re not traveling. Also a playful daytime option, I wore it when we docked in Kuşadası, Turkey, and toured the ruins of Ephesus. 

Anrabess Matching Two-piece Loungewear Set 

Anrabess’ two-piece knitted lounge set is not only ideal for travel days, but it’s also great for morning strolls on the deck, brunch, or a spa day. The crewneck pullover tank features high-low hem details while the bottoms have a comfortable elastic waistband with pleating along the front and back. The pleating is an excellent design attribute, giving them an edge and making them appear more expensive. The top can be paired with the Anrabess linen pants or Mavi’s Kylie High-waist Twill Shorts from outfit no. 6 (see below). They’re available in 17 colors, although the rich brown hue is my favorite. Trovata makes some of my favorite printed dresses and also carries a stunning collection of charming tops. This casual short-sleeved shirt is made of 100 percent cotton, which offers ventilation and is suitable for both warm and cooler temperatures. It has shirring accents along the front body and features delicate antique buttons. It also comes in two other prints to help you spice up your cruise looks.

The Kylie High-waist Shorts from Mavi offer a polished look. Made of stretch twill fabric, it has front side pockets along with patch pockets in the back. Match it with the Trovata top for daytime adventures, or pair it with your Spanx Crepe Vest Top from outfit no. 3 for an edgier nighttime look, whether it’s at the ship's casinos or for a live performance.

Grace Karin Sleeveless One-shoulder Sequin Wrap Dress With Slit

I loved getting dressed up for “evening chic” night during our time on Celebrity Cruises. Although the cruise line no longer mandates formal nights, it was fun to get dolled up and dance the night away with my husband. This one-shoulder sequin number was a great find on Amazon. I’m a fan of the side ruching and the self-belt tie. Completely lined on the inside for comfort, it comes in 15 dazzling colors and is available in sizes ranging from S to 2XL. Not a fan of sequins? No problem, take a look at Jamil’s Amra Sari Gown , an elegant one-shoulder dress made from 100 percent satin. 

As much as I love coordinating outfits for my travels, I have just as much fun adding the accessories to go with them. In fact, they can even help you expand your outfit options, even when you're working with a limited packing list. A refined kimono works as an opulent sleepwear robe, a beach cover-up, or a fashionable cardigan. I like to pack this one from Fable England, which is made of 100 percent sustainable wood pulp and feels soft and luxurious when draped on your skin. This affordable option from Amazon is another solid choice; wear it over your Petal & Pup’s Devlin Top and the matching bottoms (or the Spanx combo) to make the classic outfit look brand new.

Hilor One-shoulder One-piece With Asymmetric Ruffle

Finding a flattering swimsuit can be challenging, so I’m here to tell you about Hilor’s One-shoulder Bathing Suit. It has an absolutely amazing fit and comes in 36 colors, ranging from sizes 6 to 18. I recommend sizing up for a more comfortable fit, but you'll be in good hands with its mesh paneling, which creates a compression-like smoothness. The swimsuit also has removable bra pads for extra coverage. At $38, compared to other brands, it’s definitely a steal. 

Hoka Clifton 9 Running Shoes

Packing a pair of comfy walking shoes is a must for any trip. These are the perfect recovery and all-purpose sneakers. Lightweight, yet supportive, the Clifton 9s are Hoka’s best-selling pair. The brand’s newly launched foam creates a plush interior, allowing for miles of walking with maximum cushion support. These were my go-to shoes for long days of sightseeing and exploring. Being a fitness expert , I also wore them while cross-training in Celebrity Cruises' state-of-the-art gym.

BBjinronjy Clutch-to-Crossbody Bag

This classic clutch was the best bag to bring for my cruise. Not only did I wear it with my casual two-piece loungewear Set , but I also worked well for our “evening chic” nights aboard the ship. At just $15, it's the perfect price to buy in multiple colors, which I did (I got the nude and leopard print ones). The neutral color goes with everything while the print looks great with monochromatic solid colored outfits.

For such a compact bag, it sure does carry a lot of stuff. Measuring 8.6 inches by 1.96 inches by 5.3 inches, it comfortably fits my Samsung Galaxy, two tubes of lipstick, a perfume roller, and a credit card case. If it’s in your budget, splurge on Cuyana’s Mini Double Loop Bag in Cappuccino , which is a similar and stunning bag crafted in soft Italian leather. Despite its sleek size, it also holds a significant amount of essentials. 

Vera Bradley Ripstop Packable Tote

Cruise itineraries are often jam-packed, and odds are, you'll be spending a lot of time by the pool, venturing to nearby beaches and parks for outings, or local shops to pick up some souvenirs. If that's the case, I recommend bringing a packable tote like this gorgeously printed Vera Bradley option. It can be your beach bag, shopping tote, or whatever else you need it to be. And when you're done, just fold it up and stick it back in your carry-on or personal bag item (it won't take up any precious space, I promise).

Born Libra Sandals 

What I like most about Born’s Libra Sandals is the traction on the outsole. You won’t have to worry about slipping or sliding while in these adorable sandals. The cushioned footbed supports your arches for a day of activities. Choose from four colorways in sizes ranging from 6 to 11. My favorite option is the light gold metallic hue, which is such a pretty neutral color that could be worn with any of the above outfits on both casual and formal occasions. 

Lucky Brand Cotton Blend Utility Jacket

A versatile lightweight jacket (like my go-to one Duluth Trading Co. or this all-around cute option from Lucky Brand) is a good idea to bring on a Mediterranean cruise. Even in the summertime, it can get cool at night, so you’ll want something to cover you up and keep you warm. This shirt jacket won me over because it’s made with cotton, offering some cozy softness and comfortable breathability. There are two deep side pockets for stashing your essentials while on the go, making it a functional and versatile piece to pack. I also love the vintage feel of the utility jacket. 

Gonex Compression Packing Cube Set

If you haven’t tried compression cubes yet, believe me when I say they’ll change your life. Being a carry-on-only traveler, I rely on Gonex’s packing cubes to fit all my outfits and essentials efficiently. This set comes with four cubes, including small, medium, large, and extra-large sizes. Not only do they compress all your belongings so they fit, they help you stay organized during your vacation. No more rifling through your luggage searching for that single item. I put all my day outfits in one cube, my night outfits in another, and so on. Travel | travel: it’s the little things that make small-ship cruising special.

Fast-forward nine amazing days to our farewell dinner at Candles, the swankiest dining option aboard Windstar Cruises’ 312-passenger megayacht. Waiting at our table, besides a couple of our  favorites among a crackerjack crew, was a wine bottle definitely not included with our drink package. It was a 2021 Sacred Burro from Denner Vineyards, complements of the ship’s hotel director who heard through the non-vinicultural grapevine that we might appreciate toasting to an epic father and son vacation with a highly rated red from San Luis Obispo County.

Fellow passengers shared their own accounts of crew-created kindnesses over the course of the cruise through Northern Europe. Like when a cabin steward was sent ashore in Finland to buy vegan cream cheese for a lactose-intolerant guest. Or the passenger whose daily delivery of fresh fruit switched from berries and melon to sliced papaya and mango because of his affinity for wearing aloha shirts.

Speaking of shirts, a man who lost 100 pounds since his last Windstar cruise was gifted with the same branded polo he had previously purchased, only this time in L and not XXL. We also heard about a blackout curtain that was installed in a stateroom after a cocktail server overheard a guest complaining about too much early-morning sun coming through the window. Talk about “wow” factor.

Impressed? Then welcome to small-ship cruising, where personalized service is often at a level that’s off the nautical charts. Whether it’s the entire bar staff remembering that Mrs. Smith from cabin 410 likes an orange slice garnish with her Aperol spritz each evening in the Compass Rose lounge, or the crew being tipped off that Mr. Jones in 608 prefers to be called by his less-formal first name, this is the stuff that comes with being on a ship of 300, not 3,000, and a crew-to-passenger ratio of close to 1:1, if not higher.

“It’s about making magic moments for the guests, whether it’s with a meaningful bottle of wine, accommodation of a special request or an experience that’s 180 degrees from ordinary,” said Star Legend officer Wilhelm Steinbrunner. “It’s not doing the usual, like leaving a towel animal at turndown every night. We’ll do that one day, and on the others it may be a special surprise like a Norwegian troll left on beds when we’re in Oslo, a Spanish hand fan for Barcelona and a shot of limoncello on our cruises going to Sicily.”

Windstar may have a standard policy of intel sharing among departments, these bits of personal data used to inspire those magic moments and special surprises, but the 40-year-old company is but one of many cruise lines courting the cruiser who contends that bigger isn’t always better.

Ponant, Scenic Luxury Cruises and Tours, Emerald Cruises, Silversea and Paul Gauguin Cruises are some of the other major players in this growing category, and we can toss Azamara into the mix because even though its four ships hold about 700, their atmosphere exudes the intimacy of a vessel with half as many even when full. Each brand has its unique flavor — Ponant is known for French-accented luxury and with Azamara it’s late-night port sailaways and overnight visits, for example — but they all share common threads inherent to a market segment that isn’t for everyone.

If a club scene, array of specialty dining, entertainment, shopping and exhaustive program of ship activities is important, then either go bigger or stay home because with few exceptions you’re not going to find any of that on ships designed for 50 to 300 guests.

What you can expect, besides more personalized service, is a relaxed atmosphere on and off the ship. Up-selling is at a minimum, not just because nickel-and-diming is gauche, but nearly everything is included in the fare. Other ways that small ships are good for one’s hypertension: Announcements over the P.A. are kept in check; the buffet doesn’t resemble a feeding frenzy; and embarkation and debarkation tend to be a snap.

Stress-free gangway experiences apply in the middle of the itinerary, too. A small ship’s physical size enables docking or anchoring in tight, shallow waterways, often resulting in a prime starting point to explore, not unlike with river and barge cruises. The shore excursions themselves tend to be more immersive and intellectual than big-ship group tours.

Something else that small provides is passengers occasionally being invited into crew culture and other behind-the-scenes experiences. The bridge usually has an open-door policy, giving guests a glimpse of a captain’s life and a great photo for social media. Another example is Windstar’s tradition of a sacrificial crew member jumping into the pool at the end of his or her contract — in full uniform. Watching a hard-working crew enjoy themselves on the last full day is always good, clean fun.

Despite all the positives, small-ship sailing does have some potential drawbacks. First-world problems related to vessel size include a higher chance of rocking in imperfect cruise conditions and the inability to hide from that one jerk who’s always on a cruise. The biggie, and often a deal-breaker, is price. A cabin on the SS David can be four to eight times more than that on the SS Goliath. Bear in mind, an apples-to-apples comparison of megaships and small ships is often a fruitless exercise. The little guys often include shore excursions, alcohol, specialty coffees, Wi-Fi, gratuities and even flights in the fare.

And, oh, the places you will go on a small-ship cruise. Sometimes those places are ones unfamiliar even to avid cruisers. Ever been to Bornholm, Froya, Invergordon or Skopelos, let alone heard of these ports in Denmark, Norway, Scotland and Greece, respectively? Go on Windstar’s 81-night Grand Europe Adventure Cruise in July 2026 and you will. That epic voyage is on Star Legend, one of six boutique all-suite and sailing yachts in Windstar’s fleet, each carrying between 148 and 342 passengers.

More are on the way. Earlier this year, Windstar ( windstarcruises.com ) announced an expansion of two new ships to its motorized Star Class starting in December 2025. One of those — Star Seeker — will sail up the West Coast in spring 2026 to spend the summer in Alaska. The following year will see two Windstar ships in French Polynesia as the sail-powered Wind Star will join Star Breeze, no doubt filling up more planes to Tahiti from Los Angeles and San Francisco, the busiest gateways to the popular honeymoon destination.

Taking the Scenic route, the luxury company has two polar-class Discovery Yachts that explore the sun-soaked Caribbean, Mediterranean, South Pacific and South America when not taking guests to the poles on life-changing expedition cruises. With space for just 228 guests and all-suite accommodations, Scenic Eclipse and her sister, Scenic Eclipse II, provide an intimate, all-inclusive luxury experience featuring more than 10 dining venues, the state-of-the-art Senses Spa, and such adrenaline-pumping adventures as going underwater in a custom-built submarine and soaring above iconic coastlines in an onboard helicopter. Scenic’s ( scenicusa.com ) core product is its river cruises, and over a dozen of the luxury brand’s elegant and spacious vessels, each with capacities between 68 and 169 passengers, navigate waterways in Europe and Asia.

Looking at one more small-ship cruise line, Ponant ( www.ponant.com ) boasts a fleet of six explorer vessels, four expedition ships and a luxury icebreaker — each of which comfortably accommodate between 184 and 270 passengers — and a 32-guest sailing yacht. Catering to Francophiles and French-speaking travelers, Ponant has a certain lifestyle that may not float every American’s boat, but those looking for a journey with joie de vivre will assuredly enjoy the cruise line’s inherent blend of casual, relaxed elegance and some of the prettiest cuisine afloat.
