Boat Test: 2023 Phenom Yachts 37

Phenom Yachts 37 running near shore

The Phenom 37 is a spare-no-expense offshore fishing boat loaded with standards that are almost always options aboard other boats, including a Seakeeper 3 gyrostabilizer, Mercury Joystick Docking for Outboards, a Vetus 571 Bow Pro thruster that acts in concert with the joystick, and Zipwake trim control.

Interior and Accessories

Because Phenom is a semi-custom builder that sells direct to the public, owners can customize their bling in ways like adding more than three Gemlux rod holders per gunwale. There’s an impressive array of 13 rocket launchers set into two tiers on the back side of the hardtop. Fishy features include twin 30-gallon livewells at opposing corners of the transom. An automatic system that pressurizes each livewell to 0.5 psi keeps the tanks full to eliminate sloshing no matter the speed or sea condition. Two pumps per livewell add redundancy, and they all reside in a pump box to prevent air from getting into the lines when running in rough water.

Phenom Yachts 37 bow seating

For overnighting, there’s a lockable, air-conditioned cabin with a 6-foot-long berth wide enough for two that converts to a rear-facing bench seat thanks to the seatback that deploys in two seconds. There’s also a standard electric Dometic head with a pump-out, and a sink with a shower attachment.

Phenom Yachts 37 cockpit

At the helm are three side-by-side captain’s chairs with individual electronic fore and aft sliders, and the backrests have a venting system to deliver air or heat. The dash on our test boat had twin 22-inch Garmin 8622 touchscreen displays. The three-sided tempered-glass windscreen has a vent that opens electronically.

Phenom’s twin-vented NexStep hull reduces surface tension for better efficiency and higher speeds, and its designers used a three-strake hull design with chamfered edges rather than rounded ones to further decrease drag and reduce slamming in rough seas. The Phenom 37’s hull is ready to do battle with the chop, with a sharp 65 degrees of entry and 23 degrees of deadrise at the stern. Normally, this could make a boat tender in rolling ocean swells, but Phenom’s standard gyrostabilizer keeps the deck earth-steady. Our test boat sported triple 400 hp Mercury V-10 Verado outboards . While Phenom has been able to coax speeds of more than 70 mph during performance runs, our test results fell just short of that mark at 68.3 mph.

How We Tested

  • Engines: Triple 400 hp Mercury Verados
  • Drive/Props: Outboard/Merc Revolution X 14 5/8″ x 27″ 4-blade
  • Gear Ratio: 2.80:1 Fuel Load: 270 gal. Crew Weight: 625 lb.

Phenom Yachts 37 head

High Points

  • Port and starboard dive doors assist with passenger boarding and landing large fish.
  • Access to features, like the Vetus 571 Bow Pro thruster and Seakeeper 3 gyrostabilizer, is exceptional.
  • Lumitec RGB lighting system uses 17 lights to create a magical and safer nighttime experience.
  • Use of SeaSuckers to secure outrigger halyards seems like an uncharacteristically low-tech workaround for this advanced boat.
  • No windshield-wiper option to keep the forward glass clean during hard offshore runs.

Toughest Competitor

Formula’s 387 center-console is similar in size, performance and mission. The biggest difference between the models is Formula does not include the Seakeeper 3 gyrostabilizer as a standard feature. When added, it makes the Formula about $200,000 more expensive.

Phenom 37 fishing offshore

The Phenom 37 is not just a new offshore center-console boat; it’s the first boat from new company Phenom Yachts, based in South Carolina and headed by marine boatbuilding veteran Tommy Hancock. Its design is based around four pillars: family, fishing, luxury and performance. The 37 rides on Phenom’s NextStep hull boasting a race-inspired twin-stepped running surface. Innovative systems include a patent-pending, pressure-sensing sea-chest pump system that automatically adjusts water flow to the two 30-gallon, aquarium-style livewells to optimize bait health. Luxury touches include three-across premium helm chairs that are air-conditioned to keep crewmembers comfy during sultry days. Construction features an infused full-grid fiberglass stringer system and vacuum-infused fiberglass hull and interior. A Seakeeper 3 gyrostabilizer comes standard, as does a bow thruster and tuna/dive doors on both sides of the aft cockpit. With a 502-gallon fuel capacity, the Phenom 37 is available with a pair of Mercury V-12 outboards or triple Mercury V-10 outboards, both of which include Merc’s Joystick Piloting.

Phenom Yachts manufactures and delivers some of the most luxurious yachts on the market currently. They have focused their time and energy on creating yachts that solve every problem you may have found yourself getting into while out on the water.

The brand states that the term Phenom is synonymous with the goal of the brand. Their goal has always been to create a yacht that is family-friendly, luxurious, high performing, fishing-friendly, and customizable. They have really hit the nail on the head when it comes to innovation and providing boats that really stand out from the crowd.

Stepping onto the deck of a Phenom 37 can only be described as breathtaking as you take in all it has to offer around you. The elegance, luxury, and beauty really shine. Phenom Yachts uses only the best and highest quality products to craft their boats leaving you with a vessel that is durable, reliable, and safe. In fact, the Phenom 37 is a National Marine Manufacturers Association certified boat.

The 2023 Phenom 37 is said to not only be beautiful but also handle well on the water and outperform the competitors when it comes to acceleration and power.

Phenom has four pillars that they take into consideration when crafting a boat and those pillars are performance, fishing, family, and luxury. You can think of the 2023 Phenom 37 as a luxury car. It has everything you could need, want, and desire.

If you are looking for your next boat and are considering the 2023 Phenom 37, we invite you to keep reading this review. We will dive a bit more in-depth and go over what the Phenom 37’s interior and engine have to offer along with the pricing and warranty.

Learn more about the 2023 Phenom 37 below!

Interior and Accessories

One of the most notable features of the 2023 Phenom 37 is that it is a semi-custom builder, which means that you can customize it to meet your specific needs and styling preferences. Phenom sells directly to customers allowing you to skip the middleman and work directly with the brand to create your perfect boat.

To put it lightly, Phenom describes the Phenom 37 as delivering where “the top of expectations ends and phenomenal begins.”

The bow is going to be one of the areas that most interest those who like to lounge as they cruise the water. Here, you will find a large and spacious zone designed for entertainment. You can add in additional bow seating, should you choose. Each of the seats in the bow area includes storage under the lids.

All cushions in the bow are installed on plungers, which makes them easy to align depending on position and also to remove. Both the cushion itself and the backrest can be easily removed should you want more open space.

An optional electronically controlled bow table is available. This table sits in the center of the bow seating can be lowered into the deck and sits flush with the deck when not in use.

Other Features in the Bow Area:

  • Freshwater washdown
  • Windlass anchor system
  • Cleats and toe rail
  • Powder-coated bow handrails
  • Recessed storage

Front Console

At the front of the console, you will find contoured chaise loungers that include armrests for comfort. For additional legroom, the front half of the cushion slides forward.

The forward cushion of the chaise loungers acts as the lid to a 330-quart built-in insulated cooler. You can conveniently lift the cushion to access the cooler and keep both drinks and snacks cooled off here on your day adventure.

Console Interior

Moving into the console interior, you will access the interior via an entry door. This door does lock to add an extra layer of security should you not be on the boat.

Included in the 37 Phenom is a 6-foot berth. The berth has an overall height of more than 6.5 feet at its highest point. The berth can be easily transformed into a bench seat by simply lifting up the front section to form the bench.

Underneath the berth is an additional storage room, which is plentiful and spacious allowing you to store a bag or two, equipment, or anything else important you need on your trip.

Phenom Yachts includes standard with the Phenom 37 a tool kit and first aid kit, which both can be found within the berth storage area.

Located to the front of the berth is a porcelain head. Here you will also find a wood accent vanity, sink, and pull-out shower.

The console does come equipped with air conditioning making it a very comfortable area for those hot days on the water. The air plenum is installed above the window to ensure that the entire room is cooled quickly and efficiently. At night, the air plenum will glow. The air conditioner offers 3,500 BTUs and can run solely on batteries, which means it does not require the engine to be on to run.

Leaning Post

At the leaning post are three comfortable, plush, and oversized captain’s chairs. What sets these chairs apart from others is that the air conditioning runs right through them to keep you cool and comfortable while on the water. Each chair is ergonomically designed for supreme comfort and luxury. These seats offer heat in the winter as well.

All of the captain’s chairs are installed on an electric slide. This slide allows each passenger to maneuver the seat around to get the right fit.

On the backside of the leaning post is an additional seating area that consists of a mezzanine seat designed to seat two or three people. The seat includes armrests for added comfort. The bottom cushion of this seat hides an additional insulated cooler that can be easily accessed by lifting up the seat.

For fishing adventures, the backrest of the mezzanine seat can be pulled down to reveal a bait prep area. This area comes equipped with a non-slip surface, cutting board, and tackle storage. For additional storage, the leaning post has a door on each side that opens to reveal more tackle storage and drawers.

Other Features in the Leaning Post Area:

  • Battery bank
  • 100-AMP battery charger
  • Console footrest storage

Similar to the helm, you have another entertainment zone located here at the stern. In the center, you will find a bench that seats three to four people. This bench seat is ideal as it can be stored when not in use. Towards the very back, there are handles that when pulled, reveal a large seat with a backrest.

At the very back of the stern is a large and spacious swim platform that surrounds the engines. You can hang out in this area when docked or anchored as it makes the perfect deck.

Questions for Investigators Trying to Unravel Mystery of Luxury Yacht’s Sinking

The investigators searching for answers about the shipwreck, leaving seven dead, face questions about extreme weather and possible human error or problems with the yacht itself.

  • Share full article

Two small boats with outboard motors make their way across the water.

By Alan Yuhas

More than 180 feet long, with a mast towering about 240 feet and a keel that could be lowered for greater stability, the Bayesian luxury yacht did not, in the eyes of its maker, have the vulnerabilities of a ship that would easily sink.

“It drives me insane,” Giovanni Costantino, the chief executive of the Italian Sea Group, which in 2022 bought the company that made the ship, said after its wreck last week. “Following all the proper procedures, that boat is unsinkable.”

But the $40 million sailing yacht sank within minutes and with fatal results: seven dead, including the British technology billionaire Michael Lynch, his teenage daughter, four of Mr. Lynch’s friends and a member of the crew. Fifteen people, including the captain, escaped on a lifeboat.

Mr. Lynch had invited family, friends and part of his legal team on a cruise in the Mediterranean to celebrate his acquittal in June of fraud charges tied to the sale of his company to the tech giant Hewlett-Packard.

The Italian authorities have opened a manslaughter investigation, searching for answers from the survivors, the manufacturer and the wreck itself. They face a range of questions and possible factors.

An ‘earthquake’ in the sky?

When the Bayesian sank around 4 a.m. on Aug. 19, the waters in its area, about half a mile off the Sicilian port of Porticello, were transformed by an extremely sudden and violent storm, according to fishermen, a captain in the area and meteorologists.

But what kind of storm is still a mystery, compounded by the fact that a sailing schooner anchored nearby did not have its own disaster. Also unclear is whether the crew was aware that the Italian authorities had issued general warnings about bad weather the night before.

Karsten Börner, the captain of the nearby passenger ship, said he’d had to steady his ship during “really violent” winds . During the storm, he said, the Bayesian seemed to disappear behind his ship.

Severe lightning and strong gusts were registered by the Italian Air Force’s Center for Aerospace Meteorology and Climatology, according to Attilio Di Diodato, its director. “It was very intense and brief in duration,” he said.

The yacht, he said, had most likely been hit by a fierce downburst — a blast of powerful wind surging down during a thunderstorm. His agency put out rough-sea warnings the previous evening, alerting sailors about possible storms.

Locals have said the winds “felt like an earthquake.” A fisherman in Porticello said that he had seen a flare go off in the early-morning hours. His brother ventured to the site once the weather had calmed about 20 minutes later, he said, finding only floating cushions.

The Italian authorities have so far declined to say whether investigators had seen any structural damage to the hull or other parts of the ship.

Open hatches or doors?

The boat executive, Mr. Costantino, has argued that the Bayesian was an extremely safe vessel that could list even to 75 degrees without capsizing. His company, the Italian Sea Group, in 2022 bought the yacht’s manufacturer, Perini Navi, which launched the ship in 2008.

Mr. Costantino said that if some of the hatches on the side and in the stern, or some of the deck doors, had been open, the boat could have taken on water and sunk. Standard procedure in such storms, he said, would be to switch on the engine, lift the anchor and turn the boat into the wind, lowering the keel for extra stability, closing doors and gathering the guests in the main hall inside the deck.

At a news conference on Saturday, almost a week after the sinking, investigators said the yacht had sunk at an angle , with its stern — where the heavy engine was — having gone down first. The wreck was found lying on its right side at the bottom of a bay, about 165 feet deep.

12 guests occupied the yacht’s six cabins. There were also 10 crew members.

Open hatches, doors and cabin windows could have let in water during a storm, according to the manufacturer.

By Veronica Penney

Water pouring into open hatches or doors could have contributed to the sinking, experts say, but that on its own may not account for the speed at which such a large boat vanished underwater.

Asked about the hatches at the news conference, the authorities declined to comment on whether they had been found open at the wreck.

The authorities have also not specified whether the boat had been anchored, whether it was under power at the time or whether its sails had been unfurled.

A retracted keel?

The Bayesian had a keel — the fin-like structure beneath a boat that can help stabilize it — that could be retracted or extended, according to its manufacturer. On some yachts, keels can be raised to let the large vessel dock in shallower water, and extended downward to help keep a boat level.

But like the hatches, the status of the keel alone may not explain why a large ship sank with such precipitous speed. Investigators have not disclosed what divers may have seen at the wreck, aside from saying divers had faced obstacles like furnishings and electrical wiring in tight quarters. Officials want to raise the wreck to better examine it, a process that may take weeks.

Human error?

Ambrogio Cartosio, the prosecutor in charge of the case, said at the news conference that it was “plausible” crimes had been committed, but that investigators had not zeroed in on any potential suspects.

“There could be responsibilities of the captain only,” he said. “There could be responsibilities of the whole crew. There could be responsibilities of the boat makers. Or there could be responsibilities of those who were in charge of surveilling the boat.”

It remains unclear what kind of emergency training or preparation took place before the disaster, or what kind of coordination there was during it. So far, none of the surviving crew members have made a public statement about what happened the night the ship sank.

Prosecutors said they want to ask more questions of the captain and crew, who have been in a Sicilian hotel with other survivors. They said that neither alcohol nor drug tests had been performed on crew members, and that they have been allowed to leave Italy.

Prosecutors also said they were also investigating why the captain, an experienced sailor, left the sinking boat while some passengers were still on board.

Besides possible manslaughter charges, the authorities are investigating the possibility of a negligently caused shipwreck.

The bodies of five passengers were found in one cabin, on the left side of the yacht, the authorities said. The five were most likely trying to flee to the higher side of the boat and were probably sleeping when the boat started to sink, they said.
