  • Green methanol fuel to make shipping net zero
  • “Making for a radically different yacht-owning experience”
  • Trend reversal: “In many cases, engine power output will no longer be the sole yardstick”

Rolls-Royce and Italian yacht builder Sanlorenzo plan to develop and build a large motor yacht with a methanol engine propulsion system able to run carbon-neutrally on 'green' methanol. The two companies announced an exclusive memorandum of understanding to this effect for yachts between 40 and 70 meters on the eve of the opening of the 2022 Cannes Yachting Festival. Powered by two mtu methanol engines based on the Series 4000, the Sanlorenzo yacht is expected to undertake her maiden voyage in 2026.

“We're making shipping more environmentally friendly and easier on the climate, and this agreement is a big step forward in the right direction,” said Denise Kurtulus, Vice President of Global Marine at Rolls-Royce Power Systems: “Synthetic methanol, produced using electricity generated from renewable sources, is the obvious fuel of the future for many maritime applications – not least yacht propulsion.” This is because methanol is a liquid which is easy to manage, and people are already used to handling it because it is already available in ports today. “Sanlorenzo is one of the most innovative yacht builders, making it our partner of choice for this project,” she added.

Massimo Perotti, Executive Chairman and CEO of Sanlorenzo, said: “The introduction of innovations and technologies to reduce the environmental impact of yachts has long been the focus of the Group's research and development department. The subscription of the agreement with Rolls-Royce and its brand mtu for the integration of methanol propulsion systems   on our superyachts represents for our Group a memorable moment, because it gives an extraordinary acceleration to our responsible path and widens our horizons: thanks to the marine use of methanol as a fuel for combustion engines, which allows carbon-neutral powerful propulsion,   Sanlorenzo will be able to give the true answer to the demand for sustainability in the yachting sector. I thank Rolls-Royce for choosing Sanlorenzo as a partner for the joint development of a technology that is going to change the paradigm of the yachting industry.”

Green methanol is climate-friendly and carbon-neutral because it is produced using solar or wind power: The first stage is to take hydrogen and synthesize it into methanol (CH3HO) using carbon and oxygen from the air. Carbon in the form of CO2 is released into the air during combustion – but no more than was taken from it during production of the fuel. As a result, the cycle is carbon-neutral. “This sees us creating a radically different yacht-owning experience”, said Kurtulus. Emissions of particulate and nitrogen oxides are also much lower than from diesel engines, making it possible to stay within NOx limits without an SCR unit treating the exhaust gases.

The methanol engine, which is expected to be spark ignited, will be based on the winning mtu Series 4000. “Our many years of experience and our extensive expertise in mobile and stationary gas engines will give us a head start in development,” said Dr. Otto Preiss, COO and Chief Technology Officer at Rolls-Royce's Power Systems division. “We will have methanol-powered propulsion systems in our portfolio for other maritime applications as well as yachts, for example for commercial shipping. These will be part of our ecosystem with sustainable fuels, that we’re currently building. The ecosystem will also include fuel-cell-powered applications as well as electrolysis of green hydrogen, the basic ingredient for green methanol,” Preiss continued.

“We're pleased to see Italian yards, which figure prominently in the yacht market, showing a keen interest in sustainable technology. This collaboration with Sanlorenzo demonstrates that the Italian yacht building industry is taking a leading role in climate and environmental protection,” emphasizes Gianluca Bononi. He is deputy head of the Power Systems marine business unit and Managing Director of Rolls-Royce Solutions Italia based in La Spezia on the Ligurian coast, the heart of the Italian yacht building industry.

The plan is to build a large Sanlorenzo luxury yacht tailored to the new type of propulsion system and its requirements. The two partners regard the additional effort as challenging but feasible: because methanol's energy density is around 50% below that of diesel, the fuel tanks need to be about twice as big to give the vessel the same range as with diesel propulsion. Safety requirements happen to be potentially lower than with other fuels and technologies – because methanol is non-toxic. “From an engineering perspective, a methanol engine is technically the ideal compromise for the future,” said Denise Kurtulus with conviction.

As a rule of thumb, developers expect the power output of a methanol propulsion system to be about one-third less than that of a diesel system of the same size and mass. “In reality, that isn't terribly important,” said Kurtulus. “This is because larger, heavier engines are more likely to be installed in large yachts of 40 to 50 meters in length than in smaller vessels, and yacht owners who want to be climate-friendly and go easy on the environment aren't generally looking to wring out the last ounce of power. We're seeing a trend reversal in the market. In many cases, engine power output in and of itself will no longer be the yardstick. Instead, there will be more and more customers who want to do their bit to protect the climate and now we can also offer them a solution, too,” concluded Ms. Kurtulus.

In parallel with the Cannes Yachting Festival, Rolls-Royce will be presenting new mtu marine propulsion, automation and service solutions – including methanol engines and fuel cell systems – under the slogan 'Pioneering the journey to net zero' at SMM, the international maritime industry trade show, in Hamburg, Germany, from 6 to 9 September 2022.

Rolls-Royce unveils Crystal Blue a luxury yacht with advanced digital technology and hybrid propulsion

Rolls-Royce unveiled their ground-breaking luxury yacht concept the Crystal Blue at the Global Superyacht Forum (GSF) in Amsterdam on 13 November. The yacht uses hybrid propulsion technology based on LNG (liquified natural gas) fuel

Rolls-Royce have unveiled their new 62 metre yacht, Crystal Blue, a new concept that benefits from advanced ship intelligence solutions and hybrid propulsion based on LNG (liquified natural gas) fuel and battery power.

The yacht accommodates 12+ guests and 12 crew and comes with a smaller 42 metre yacht, Blue Shadow, a remotely-controlled, steel-hulled support vessel used for transporting and launching Crystal Blue’s tender, helicopter and any other toys that the yacht owner may have. The addition of a second vessel allows designers to make better use of the aft area of Crystal Blue, allowing room to include an infinity pool or a beach area. The shadow boat also doubles up as the owner’s personal LNG bunkering barge.

LNG fuel is increasingly being specified for use by commercial vessels, coastal ferries being a good example, yet the size of the fuel tanks and the lack of LNG bunkering infrastructure has made it difficult for the yacht sector to fully embrace this cleaner, odourless fuel.

Oskar Levander, Rolls-Royce SVP Concepts and Innovation, said at the Global Superyacht Forum (GSF) in Amsterdam: “Crystal Blue has been designed specifically to show how new technology can meet the yacht sector’s increased demand for higher performance, greater operating ranges and increased levels of guest comfort, without impacting the environment.”

“Burning LNG has clear advantages over Marine Diesel Oil for the yacht sector.”, explained Henrik Alpo Sjöblom, Project Manager in the Rolls-Royce Blue Ocean team.

“There is no smoke, it doesn’t emit any unpleasant odours or fumes and it meets stringent emissions regulations, allowing yachts to enter otherwise prohibited ecologically sensitive waters.”

“We have dimensioned Crystal Blue fuel tanks for a range of 3000 nautical miles without refuelling but with the Shadow’s additional fuel capacity, the range increases to 4400 nautical miles, meaning that most of the typical yachting areas are accessible.”

Crystal Blue with Blue Shadow

Crystal Blue utilises an intelligent dynamic positioning system which automatically controls twin azimuthing thrusters (which give ships better maneuverability than a fixed propeller and rudder system) and a TT1100 bow thruster – this is technology usually found on offshore support vessels hower on Crystal Blue, this system allows the yacht to remain, without anchoring, in the right spot on the water and ‘follow the sun’ to ensure sunbathers can enjoy the “optimum tanning angle” on deck.

Rolls-Royce Unveils a Groundbreaking Superyacht

By Nick Mafi

Photography by Rolls-Royce

Image may contain Vehicle Transportation Boat and Yacht

For over a century, Rolls-Royce has been producing some of the finest machines in the world, transforming a family-run company into the very definition of luxe. As such, it should come as little surprise that the UK-based manufacturer would design a stunning new superyacht. Recently unveiled at an event in Amsterdam, the concept superyacht is, aesthetically speaking, about as beautiful as one would imagine a Rolls-Royce vessel to be. The sleek, monochrome design of Crystal Blue (as the yacht is being called) is typical of most Rolls-Royce vehicles. In other words, the brand doesn't need to be showy with splashes of loud colors or radical angles. Rather, it allows its superior engineering, glamorous interiors, and boldly designed exteriors to entice the rich and the famous.

While designing superyachts is nothing new for Rolls-Royce (most recently, the company collaborated in designing a vessel with British designer Claydon Reeves over the summer), Crystal Blue is not only a new frontier for the company, but in many ways it's revolutionary in the world of superyachts. For starters, the bridge (where all of the yacht's navigational controls are handled) of the 203-foot long vessel is hidden within the yacht. This is for two reasons: one being that the traditional bridge generally has the best panoramic views and with the design of the Crystal Blue ; those views will now be enjoyed by the owner and guests instead of the crew, and the second is the fact that a hidden bridge makes it harder for unwanted intruders to take control of the vessel. In the event an intruder does come aboard Crystal Blue, however, the craft's design includes a "safe room" where guests and crew members can lock themselves in while taking complete control over the ship.

Furthermore, Crystal Blue, which can comfortably hold 12 passengers and 12 crew members, features a new technology that allows the yacht to remain in the same position without having to anchor. This is important for those who want to stay in or around the same area while rotating every few hours, without having the hassle or waste of energy to pull up the anchor. This allows the owner and guests to, for example, follow the sun's arc to ensure they can enjoy the optimum tanning angle on the deck of the vessel throughout the day.

Finally, Crystal Blue includes a hybrid engine (both traditional and battery-operated) that can achieve a maximum speed of 20 knots (roughly 23 m.p.h.). Best of all, perhaps, is the fact that the battery-operated portion of the engine can be used while the superyacht is at port, saving much energy while the vessel is not in use on the open seas. While it's still uncertain when Crystal Blue will be available for purchase, the excitement from the team at Rolls-Royce is palpable. At an unveiling event in Amsterdam, Oskar Levander, Rolls-Royce SVP of Concepts and Innovation, explained his team's optimism: "With Crystal Blue we can show what can be achieved and how the yacht of the future might look."

Rolls-Royce unveils hybrid megayacht

' src=

The following is the text of a news release from Rolls-Royce:

(LONDON) — Rolls-Royce has unveiled a ground-breaking luxury yacht concept designed to showcase the advantages of advanced ship intelligence solutions and hybrid propulsion based on liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel and battery power in the marine leisure market.

Introduced Nov. 13 during the Global Superyacht Forum (GSF) in Amsterdam, the Crystal Blue yacht and its attendant support vessel Blue Shadow have been developed to enable new thinking in yacht design and propulsion by optimizing the yacht’s superstructure for greater guest use and comfort.

Announcing the development in a keynote speech at the GSF event, Oskar Levander, Rolls-Royce senior vice president for concepts and innovation, said, “Crystal Blue has been designed specifically to show how new technology can meet the yacht sector’s increased demand for higher performance, greater operating ranges and increased levels of guest comfort, without impacting the environment.”

One of the many novel features is the use of an intelligent dynamic positioning system which automatically controls twin azimuthing thrusters and a TT1100 bow thruster – technology that is usually found on offshore support vessels that must maintain their positions next to oil rigs to within a couple of meters. On board Crystal Blue, however, this system allows the yacht to remain in the right spot on the water – without using an anchor – and "follow the sun" across the sky to ensure sunbathers can enjoy the “optimum tanning angle” while lounging on deck.

At first glance, it seems Rolls-Royce has forgotten to include a bridge in the design but, as Levander explains, “it’s just been moved."

“Our ship intelligence and remote-control concepts have allowed us to design a yacht for the future that has the bridge located below the bow, inside the vessel. The crew is able to monitor and control the vessel using sophisticated sensors, cameras, display screens and situational awareness technologies; but an internal bridge frees up the traditional area of the bridge in the forward part of the superstructure to let owners and guests enjoy a panoramic vista that is traditionally only enjoyed by the crew.”

The bridge console is based on the unified bridge design that Rolls-Royce has already delivered to a number of ship types, including large superyachts. It also features technology Rolls-Royce and Svitzer demonstrated in the first remote controlled commercial tug earlier this year.

The Rolls-Royce Blue Ocean team has also incorporated some novel safety features into the design, namely a "safe room," a citadel in which guests and crew can seek refuge in the event of an unauthorized boarding. Once inside, the crew can override the controls and operate the yacht remotely or direct a shore-based center to pilot the vessel.

Designed for 12-plus passengers and 12 crew, the 203-foot Crystal Blue is based on a composite or aluminum hull operating a power plant based on the Rolls-Royce hybrid LNG/battery SAVe-CUBE system configuration.

The machinery consists of twin LNG-fueled 16V4000 MTU M65-N generator sets working in parallel with a battery bank to provide 1 MWh of genset-free power during port stays. Two low-weight carbon Azipull thrusters provide propulsive power to achieve maximum service speeds of 20 knots.

Although LNG fuel is increasingly specified for commercial vessels, particularly coastal ferries, the size of the fuel tanks and a lack of LNG bunkering infrastructure has been a major barrier to the yacht sector embracing the cleaner, odorless fuel.

“This is where Blue Shadow comes in,” said Henrik Alpo Sjoblom, project manager in the Rolls-Royce Blue Ocean team.

Operating in convoy, Blue Shadow is a smaller 137-foot, remotely-controlled, steel-hulled support vessel used for transporting and launching the mother ship’s tender, helicopter and any other "toys" that the yacht owner may have. It also allows designers to make better use of the aft area of Crystal Blue for guests, such as by including an infinity pool, or a beach area. The shadow boat also doubles up as the owner’s personal LNG bunkering barge.

“Burning LNG has clear advantages over marine diesel oil for the yacht sector,” said Sjoblom. “There is no smoke, it doesn’t emit any unpleasant odors or fumes and it meets stringent emissions regulations, allowing yachts to enter otherwise prohibited ecologically sensitive waters.

“We have dimensioned Crystal Blue fuel tanks for a range of 3,000 nautical miles without refueling but with the Shadow’s additional fuel capacity, the range increases to 4,400 nautical miles, meaning that most of the typical yachting areas are accessible.”

Explaining the reason behind the development, Levander said, “With Crystal Blue and Blue Shadow we can more effectively showcase how new digital-based ship intelligence solutions can offer unique possibilities, greater capability and added value to the luxury yacht market, both for new and existing vessels. The systems and technologies Rolls-Royce has available can bring "green" values and previously unheard of levels of comfort to the yacht owner.”

“We have a huge offering within Rolls-Royce and our portfolio is highly compatible with the marine leisure market. With Crystal Blue we can show what can be achieved and how the yacht of the future might look. We can give complete freedom to yacht designers and, in so doing, better fulfill the yacht owners’ dreams.”

Rolls-Royce to offer hybrid yacht propulsion systems

Lawrence Butcher

Rolls-Royce says it is launching a range of sustainable MTU propulsion solutions for yachts, including new hybrid options. The first large yachts are already running with systems based on the MTU Series 4000, which are certified for IMO III emissions regulations. Brand new on the market from April 2022 will be MTU Series 2000 propulsion systems with exhaust gas aftertreatment for production yachts. “More new technologies will follow to help yacht manufacturers and operators achieve their sustainability goals and those of the Paris Climate Agreement,” explained Nicola Camuffo, who heads the Yacht Competence Centre of Rolls-Royce’s Power Systems business unit in La Spezia, Italy.

Rolls-Royce says it will initially offer hybrid solutions for production yachts with MTU Series 2000 engines and variable electric power from 2023, covering a power range of approximately 1,000-1,939kW per powertrain. In addition to the engines, the system includes electric motors, gearboxes, batteries, control and monitoring systems and other electronic components. Rolls-Royce’s concept for an MTU series hybrid system comprises a modular building kit with standardized components and concepts for different vessel types and sizes.

Rolls-Royce's custom, yacht-inspired car is built for billionaire picnics — see the Boat Tail

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Rolls-Royce unveiled the Boat Tail, its latest super-luxurious, custom-built creation.

It easily cost its buyer several million dollars, but the actual price is unknown.

The Boat Tail's rear holds champagne, dishes, silverware, stools, and an umbrella.

Rolls-Royce unveiled its latest ultra-luxurious, custom-built car on Friday.

It's the second of just three Boat Tail models the British brand will create to buyer's specifications.

The first is rumored to have been commissioned by Jay-Z and Beyoncé.

Rolls-Royce won't comment on how much the Boat Tail's anonymous buyer paid for their car, but it's safe to assume the car is worth several million dollars at least.

As they say: If you have to ask, you probably can't afford it.

We do know a bit about who bought it, though. The buyer's family business grew out of his father's endeavors in the pearling industry.

Rolls-Royce scattered nods to that family history throughout the Boat Tail.

The hand-built car's design is "inspired by the racing yachts of the 20th century," Rolls-Royce said.

Its swept-back, wraparound windshield evokes the look of a motor boat's windscreen.

The carmaker used pearl shells from the buyer's private collection as inspiration for the Boat Tail's paint job.

Its front grille is machined from a single piece of aluminum, and its Spirit of Ecstasy emblem is made of rose gold.

Inside the Boat Tail, there's a clock made from mother of pearl supplied by the buyer.

The Boat Tail's rear section is its pièce de résistance.

Walnut veneer inlaid with rose-gold pinstripes gives it a nautical look, like a boat's deck.

Two panels open wide to reveal what Rolls-Royce calls a "hosting suite."

It has everything owners need for a seaside picnic or the most extravagant tailgate imaginable.

Little tables swing out on either side of the car, and folding stools are stowed below. A shading umbrella pops out from the center of the rear deck.

The right side of the picnic center is home to dishes and silverware.

The left side holds champagne flutes and wine — in a refrigerated compartment, of course.

All that’s missing is a driver to take you home after you’ve had a few too many. Surely the Boat Tail’s buyer can afford that too.

Rolls-Royce Boat Tail

Rolls-Royce unveils £20M yacht-inspired car with an 'aft deck'

BOAT takes a closer look at the new motor yacht-inspired Boat Tail car by Rolls-Royce, which even features a 'rear deck' for picnics...

The automotive world might be surging towards electrification, but two of the world’s most revered car marques have stepped back in time to an era when what the owner wanted was what the owner got. Or, to put it another way - the old-fashioned art of coach building is back.

Bentley was first to announce the return of a coach-built service early last year when it pulled the wraps off the outrageous Bacalar, an open two-seater with a two-seat body by Mulliner, the oldest coachbuilding company in the world. Just 12 Bacalars will be made, each to the individual buyer’s specification and with price tags of around £1.5 million apiece – which sounded a lot, until Rolls-Royce announced its return to coachbuilding with a special that’s reputed to have cost an eye-watering £20 million.

The Boat Tail, one of three built to the individual specifications of each customer, measures almost 5.8 metres from stem to stern and was commissioned by a couple with a fondness for all things maritime – hence the tapered, wood-clad “aft deck” at the rear of the hand-beaten aluminium body that gives the car its name.

The design harks back to the 1930s when boat tails were relatively common and the majority of luxury motors left the factory as a rolling chassis for which buyers would find a separate coach builder to make the bodywork – a system that petered out during the 1950s thanks to the emergence of automated production lines and mass-produced vehicles. But with today’s billionaires looking to outdo one another, the demand for individualism has returned – even at Rolls-Royce, where almost all of the 3,750 cars completed in 2020 left the Goodwood works with personalised twists.

Coach-built cars, however, are made from the ground up – as demonstrated by the Boat Tail, which incorporates other nods to the nautical such as a low trailing edge designed to evoke the dipped stern of a motor launch, and a fixed-canopy roof that looks like a sort of automotive bimini.

It’s the car’s “deck” area that’s most impressive, however, because at the push of a button it opens to an angle of precisely 15 degrees to reveal a “hosting suite” comprising a  champagne fridge, a parasol, two cocktail tables and a pair of carbon-fibre stools produced by Italian furniture maker Promemoria and covered with the same leather used for the car’s interior.

And for a finishing interior touch, Rolls-Royce called upon the services of Swiss watch house Bovet 1822 to make two timepieces to grace the car’s fascia. The interchangeable watches have dials on either side to enable them to be reversed when worn on the wrist, and can also be popped off their straps and slotted into the car to serve as dashboard clocks. It makes the average superyacht seem almost pedestrian…

Rolls-Royce debuts yacht-inspired car with shock $30 million price tag

R olls-Royce unveiled an open-topped, 1930s yacht-inspired extremely limited-edition model on Monday with a price tag to match a large and luxurious pleasure craft.

The Rolls-Royce La Rose Noire Droptail reimagines the carmaker’s typical four-seat sedan as a two-seat roadster — and is expected to run auto aficionados more than $30 million.

Though an exact price isn’t listed, other cars in Rolls-Royce’s coachbuilt line sell for about $28 million. However, the Droptail — of which there will be just four created — costs more to make, a company spokesperson confirmed to Bloomberg .

The Droptail features a low-slung exterior and a crimson interior that draws inspiration from the French Black Baccara rose, which the commissioning owners — thought to be a husband-and-wife duo heading up a prominent family — said is “beloved by the mother,” hence its “La Rose Noire” name.

Inside, the car’s dashboard utilizes over 1,600 pieces of black sycamore wood trim veneer cut into symmetrical triangles and arranged with pops of red designed to mimic rose petals scattering in the wind.

There’s also a champagne storage compartment that stores a bottle of bubbly from the commissioning family’s own vineyard, and a custom Audemars Piguet watch is mounted into the dash but also can be removed and worn.

A timepiece by the Swiss watchmaker alone could cost tens of thousands of dollars. It’s most popular model, the Royal Oak, runs for about $26,200 on Audemars Piguet’s website .

There’s just three buttons on the dashboard, which is minimalist compared to its other vehicles, along with control hazard lights and other quick-control tasks.

The rest of the car’s controls are hidden away in the center console.

The Black Baccara rose also inspires the car’s exterior, which comes in a decadent red hue dubbed “True Love” that Rolls-Royce said took 150 iterations to perfect.

The Droptail’s silhouette comes in at 17 feet long by 6.5 feet wide, smaller that Rolls-Royce’s highly-anticipated, first-ever electric vehicle, which is set to debut by the end of this year for $420,000.

From the back, the Droptail’s lower-to-the-ground construction evokes the figure of a sailing yacht, while the front of the car boasts Rolls-Royce’s well-known Pantheon-style grille.

However, “in a discreet flourish, the reverse surface of the grille’s vanes are painted in ‘True Love’ — a subtle detail that is only visible by way of indirect reflection,” according to the British carmaker.

Aside from the fact that the Droptail is Rolls-Royce’s first two-seater in 100 years, the company said the new model has the most complex construction the luxury carmaker has had since its founding in 1906.

“Its assembly required such intense concentration that the single craftsperson tasked with creating it would only work in one-hour sessions for no more than five hours per day, ensuring they possessed the concentration required for perfect execution,” the company explained.

In total, one Droptail takes “nine months of flawless craftsmanship” to complete, it added.

Rolls-Royce has not revealed any of the Droptail’s performance figures, though it’s powered by the 6.75-Liter V12 engine that’s also under the hood of Rolls-Royce’s Ghost and Phantom models, which can each accelerate to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds.

Representatives for Rolls-Royce did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.

Rolls-Royce acquires yacht bridge and automation specialist Team Italia

road harbour yacht rolls royce

  • Business unit Power Systems enhances its mtu product portfolio with complete ‘bridge to propeller’ solutions
  • Propulsion, and a lot more: customers benefit from fully integrated, seamless solutions from a single source

Rolls-Royce (LSE: RR., ADR: RYCEY) has acquired Team Italia/Onyx Marine, the Italian group specializing in yacht bridges and marine automation.

With this acquisition, the Rolls-Royce business unit Power Systems is strengthening its position as a yacht market leader. Further expansion of its mtu portfolio for yachts will help it to realize its ‘bridge to propeller’ strategy.

Having begun to collaborate on joint development projects in 2019, the two companies now agreed that the best way to realize strategic growth plans would be for Team Italia to become part of Rolls-Royce.

Team Italia, established in 2000, designs and develops integrated bridges and marine navigation and automation systems – mainly for Italian yacht builders and shipyards positioned prominently on the global yacht market.

"This acquisition is the next logical step on our way to becoming a provider of integrated solutions for the yacht industry. Our products complement each other perfectly, and with this step we expand our solutions portfolio significantly to enhance our market position and create further benefits for our customers,” said Denise Kurtulus, Vice President Marine in the Rolls-Royce business unit Power Systems. In addition to a mtu propulsion system, Rolls-Royce can now offer leading-edge integrated bridge products as well as regulation, control, automation, and navigation systems, and many other functions for yachts. Team Italia benefits from the Rolls-Royce Power Systems worldwide distribution network which provides access to global markets and yacht makers worldwide.

Growing together: Rolls-Royce has acquired Italian yacht bridge and automation specialist Team Italia with the aim of expanding its mtu product portfolio for the yacht market. Denise Kurtulus (second from right), Vice President Marine at the Rolls-Royce Power Systems business unit; Clemens Berger (right), President Mobile Power Solutions; Massimo Minnella (left), Managing Director of Team Italia, and Daniele Ceccanti (second from left), Technical Director, have a common goal: to further expand Rolls-Royce's leading position in the yacht market and grow worldwide.

"We are proud and very happy to become part of the Rolls-Royce group," said Massimo Minnella, Managing Director of Team Italia. "We strongly believe that in order to implement a structured expansion and maintain the high level of continuity and growth that will secure the future of our company, we need an excellent partner and marine expert like Rolls-Royce Power Systems at our side. We see excellent prospects for reaping benefits together in the global luxury yacht market.”

“Team Italia has always aimed to build products that make complex operations much simpler. By joining forces with Rolls-Royce Power Systems, it is moving another step forward in making increasingly complex systems that will equip the yachts of the future simpler and safer to operate," said Daniele Ceccanti, Technical Director of Team Italia.

"Team Italia Group has proven its outstanding capabilities – not only in system design and integration, but in software programming and successful ongoing development of its bridge and integrated platforms," said Clemens Berger, President Mobile Power Solutions at Rolls-Royce Power Systems. "These capabilities and cutting-edge technologies fit perfectly with our vision for our mtu NautIQ marine automation portfolio. Together with Team Italia we extend our systems competence to serve our Marine customers with a holistic portfolio. Moreover, we strengthen our leading positions, diversify our offerings, explore new markets and will realize profitable growth," Berger added.

With the new name Team Italia Marine s.r.l., the company continues to operate in the Italian cities of Fano, Livorno and Forlì. Its workforce of almost 60 employees including all managers and key personal will be taken over by Rolls-Royce, as Massimo Minnella will keep the role as Managing Director and Daniele Ceccanti as Technical Director. They will be supported by Nicola Camuffo, head of the Rolls-Royce mtu Yacht Competence Centre in La Spezia.

Today, Team Italia systems are in service around the world on some 350 yachts of 30 to 100m length. mtu propulsion will benefit from the specific, innovative solutions that Team Italia develops jointly with the R&D division of Rolls-Royce Power Systems. "We will continue to develop and customize our integrated bridges and automation as adaptable products, always suitable and individual to the respective systems on board," emphasized Nicola Camuffo.

Rolls-Royce Reveals Unique Arcadia Droptail Roadster

The one-off commission, reportedly priced at $25m, looks like a superyacht inside and out.

By Alex Martin

Rolls-Royce Arcadia

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has revealed its latest coachbuilt creation. Coined Arcadia, the new Droptail roadster is the third of four bespoke commissions, following La Rose Noire and Amethyst.

Each Droptail has reportedly cost $25m, for which each customer has been able to completely customize every aspect of the car’s interior and exterior. Rolls-Royce presented the new Arcadia Droptail to the mystery millionaire (or perhaps, billionaire) buyer at a private ceremony in Singapore .

For the rest of us, there are just some high-quality renderings to enjoy, detailing the ridiculous levels of craftsmanship and working hours that went into another stunning example of coachbuilding. More understated than previous iterations, Arcadia’s white exterior and wood-paneled interior lend it a distinct nautical look.

Rolls-Royce Arcadia

The understated style reflects the buyer’s personal tastes, who is said to have instilled their own “codes of luxury, defined by purity and subtle restraint,” into the car’s design.

Alex Innes, head of coachbuild design at Rolls-Royce said: “The significance of Rolls-Royce Arcadia Droptail lies in its subtlety. It is a projection of an individual who values clarity and precision in all areas of their life – from their passion for fine cuisine, their highly curated personal and professional spaces and affinity with contemporary design. In capturing their spirit, we reveal a unique appreciation for simplicity, serenity, and beautifully restrained elegance.”

This is Rolls-Royce, of course, so take “restrained” with a heavy pinch of salt. For example, the exterior color is not just white. Designers fused the white paint with aluminum and glass particles, creating an effervescent shimmer as it drives past. The carbon fiber on the lower sections of the car also has a bespoke silver color, separating it from its two predecessors.

Inside, Rolls-Royce designed specific hues of tan and white leather for this car. While both colors will remain in the Rolls-Royce archive, the British marque won’t use them in another car other than one ordered by the client. The two-tone leather colors perfectly complement the wood detailing, selected to match the owner’s favorite coffee table.

With the client intent on using the car internationally, Rolls-Royce created its own lacquer that protects it from the vigours of humidity for a lifetime.

For this commission, Rolls-Royce also had to dip into the world of haute horology . The car’s clock is the most complex Rolls-Royce has ever conceived. It took clockmakers five months to construct following two years of development. The clock incorporates a geometric guilloché pattern in raw metal with 119 facets, including hours markers just 0.1mm thick.

  • Rolls Royce : A new generation of yacht propulsion

In the harbour city of Ancona in the east of Italy, yacht-builder Ferretti Group is putting its Custom Line 106 yachts through their paces before handing them over to customers. Today, the first of these yachts to be powered by mtu Series 2000 units with IMO-3 approval is being tested on the water.

What's particularly special about this yacht is the 16-cylinder engine equipped with integrated Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR). Designed to substantially reduce nitrogen oxide emissions, it will allow yacht owners to enter emission-controlled areas (ECA zones) such as the coastal waters of Canada and the USA, as well as the Caribbean and the North and Baltic seas, without compromising the comfort and style customers expect. The yacht can reach a top speed of 26 knots (about 48 kilometres) per hour and boasts a luxury interior and exterior.

As part of the propulsion system's rigorous testing process, engineers and measurement technicians from Ferretti Group Engineering Department and Rolls-Royce Power Systems observe how the yacht fares outside of laboratory conditions. The test crew onboard the yacht performs a series of manoeuvres while measurement technician Jan Leuthäußer from Rolls-Royce Power Systems watches the engine behaviour closely.

On the test stand, the mtu Series 2000 engines with IMO-3 approval performed just as well as previous IMO-2 units that didn't have SCR. But at sea, technicians hope to confirm that the yacht's turbochargers can handle the high exhaust gas backpressure caused not only by SCR but by the underwater exhausts typical of yachts. They'll also be keeping an eye on the heat and noise levels produced by the SCR system.

"Of course, we're nervous," admits Rüdiger Grau, technical lead on the development and testing of the mtu propulsion system at the Rolls-Royce Power Systems headquarters in Friedrichshafen. But relieved smiles from the Rolls-Royce test crew confirm that everything has gone to plan.

"In today's trials, the mtu 16V 2000 M97 unit showed us that it's every bit as powerful as its predecessor. And with SCR, a lot more eco-friendly," comments Carsten Voigt, Project Manager at Rolls-Royce Power Systems.

The Custom Line Testing & Delivery Supervisor Captain and his crew are particularly impressed by the propulsion system's acoustic properties. With a well-insulated engine room, the engine's noise and vibrations were hardly perceptible on deck. "It's so important for green engines to be able to offer our customers the carefree yachting experience they're used to," he explained.

Hybrid propulsion will also be part of the future scenario, with Rolls-Royce currently developing a fully integrated mtu hybrid solution delivering 1,432 kW per power train. The IMO-3-compliant system will comprise twin 12-cylinder mtu Series 2000 M97 diesel engines, electrical propulsion modules, gearbox, batteries, control and monitoring systems, further electronic components and an SCR system.

"Hybridizing propulsion is one possibility for making yachts greener. We're currently working on modular solution architectures in which hybrid systems will be combined with future technologies such as methanol engines, fuel cells and batteries - all with the aim of making yachts greener and more comfortable at the same time," notes Tobias Kohl, Director Marine Engineering Applications at Rolls-Royce Power Systems.
