Additionally, travel times may vary for different types of boats, including yachts, catamarans, sailboats, or ferry services.
How Long Does It Take to Get from Miami to the Bahamas by Motor Yacht?
Yachts, with their higher speed capabilities, can shorten the travel time compared to other types of vessels. A well-equipped yacht can cover the distance between Miami and Nassau in about 4 to 6 hours , making it an ideal option for those seeking a swift and stylish journey.
A motor yacht is the ideal boat to charter from Miami to The Bahamas if you’re looking for a short trip, for example for a 3/4 days charter vacation, particularly in terms of time, speed and comfort. In fact, motor yachts are faster then sailboats and catamarans, allowing you to reach The Bahamas from Miami in less time. Moreover, a yacht can take more direct routes, cutting down on travel time and reducing thee overall journey.
Each type of vessel has its unique advantages, and the decision should align with your priorities for the journey.
How Long Does It Take to Get from Miami to the Bahamas by Catamaran or Sailboat?
Catamarans and sailboats offer a more leisurely pace, taking approximately 6 to 10 hours to reach Nassau . The relaxed journey allows passengers to savor the beauty of the open seas and enjoy the gentle rocking of the boat.
Chartering a catamaran or a sailboat for your private vacation from Miami to The Bahamas offers a unique sailing experience, connection with nature and a more relaxed pace.
Relying on wind propulsion, catamarans and sailboats typically have lower operational costs, reducing the need for fuel to motor yachts and this can make the overall trip more effective. On the other hand, the trip could take more time.
Our recommendation is to charter the catamaran or sailboat for a minimum of 5 to 7 days, evaluating a one-way trip.

Bimini, part of the Bahamas archipelago, is the closest Caribbean island to Miami. Located just 50 miles off the coast, Bimini is a popular destination for boaters seeking a quick getaway with a distinct Caribbean flair.

Costs and prices, how much does it cost to charter a yacht from florida to the bahamas.
The cost of chartering a yacht from Florida to the Bahamas varies based on the type of vessel, duration of the charter, and additional services provided. On average, charter prices can range from $2,000 to $10,000 or more per day, with luxury yachts commanding higher rates.
On top of the charter rate there are the taxes and the expenses, as fuel, food, drinks and ports. Depending on the charter duration and/or the terms applied, the expenses could be included or covered by the APA.
How to Calculate The Fuel Cost of a Motor Boat vacation to the Bahamas from Florida?
Calculating the fuel cost for a powerboat journey from Miami to various islands in the Bahamas involves considering factors such as the distance, fuel consumption rate (in gallons per hour), and the cost of fuel per gallon.
Here’s a general formula for estimating fuel costs:
Fuel Cost = ( Distance/Miles per Gallon) × Cost per Gallon of Fuel
Assumptions:
- The fuel consumption rate is in miles per gallon (MPG).
- The distance is in miles.
- The cost of fuel is per gallon.
Let’s use average values for illustration purposes:
- Distance: 50 miles (approx.)
- Fuel Consumption Rate: 1.5 MPG (assumed)
- Cost per Gallon of Fuel: $4.00 (assumed)
Fuel Cost = (50/1.5) × 4.00
- Distance: 185 miles (approx.)
- Fuel Consumption Rate: 1.2 MPG (assumed)
Fuel Cost = (185/1.2) × 4.00
- Distance: 100 miles (approx.)
- Fuel Consumption Rate: 1.4 MPG (assumed)
Fuel Cost = (100/1.4) × 4.00
These calculations provide estimated fuel costs for one leg of the journey.
For a more accurate estimate, it’s crucial to consider the specific fuel consumption rate of the powerboat being used. Additionally, fuel prices may vary, so the assumed cost per gallon is a generalization.
Keep in mind that fuel costs are just one aspect of the overall expenses involved in a boat trip. Other factors, such as maintenance, docking fees, and provisions, should also be considered when planning the budget for a Miami to Bahamas powerboat journey.
Is It Safe to Boat from Florida to the Bahamas?
Navigating from Florida to the Bahamas is generally considered safe, especially when following established routes and adhering to safety guidelines. However, it’s essential to monitor weather conditions, have proper safety equipment on board, and stay informed about any navigational challenges.
How Rough Are the Seas from Miami to Bahamas?
The seas between Miami and the Bahamas can vary in terms of roughness, depending on weather conditions. The route crosses the Gulf Stream, and while it is generally navigable, boaters should be prepared for occasional choppy seas, especially during adverse weather.
Do You Need a Passport to Take a Boat from Miami to the Bahamas?
Yes, a passport is mandatory for all travelers, including U.S. citizens, when crossing from Miami to the Bahamas by boat. It is essential to ensure that all passengers have valid passports before embarking on the journey, as entry into the Bahamas requires proper documentation.
Conclusion:
Embarking on a boat journey from Miami to the Bahamas is an exhilarating experience that opens the door to a world of azure waters, sandy beaches, and vibrant marine life. Whether you choose the swiftness of a yacht, the serenity of a sailboat, or the stability of a catamaran, meticulous planning, adherence to safety guidelines, and proper documentation will ensure a memorable and seamless voyage across the aquamarine highway.

Tips before you Charter a Yacht to Bimini Island
Before starting your private yacht charter to Bimini Island, The Bahamas , allow us to get you acquainted with this tiny but fascinating island. It’s divided in 3 small Islands: North, East, and South Bimini, with North and South Bimini being the largest. Also, the name is derived from these 2 Islands (Bi Mini).
The North side is only 7 miles (11km) long and 700 feet (200m) wide. You only need a golf cart to move around and enjoy the shops, restaurants, and bars.
With only 182 people living on the South side you will encounter South Bimini Airport, a few small hotels, and private homes you can rent. The island is famous for Big Game Fishing, scuba diving and snorkeling.
South Bimini is more relaxing whereas North Bimini has more activity and is recommended by us. You have options of Marinas where to dock, from Bimini Big Game Marina to Resorts World Bimini Resort and Marina.
WHAT TO SEE & DO ON BIMINI ISLANDS, BAHAMAS
SCUBA DIVING AND SNORKELING AT SS SAPONA SHIPWRECK
The SS Sapona Shipwreck was a concrete cargo vessel built by Henry Ford during WWII. In 1926 it was destroyed by a hurricane. Today it still sits on the South side of Bimini Island, 3 miles from the shore. You can reach the Sapona shipwreck by your chartered boat and enjoy snorkeling reaching 20 feet deep. The beauty of the clear ocean makes it such a splendid landmark to enjoy a variety of sea fishes and sea creatures. Feel free to take amazing pictures while jumping off the shipwreck.
For scuba diving we recommend Neal Watson Bimini Scuba Center . They are professional, patient and can accommodate divers of all levels.
Quick tips:
- not recommended for pregnant women
- have your waterproof camera or GoPro handy
- make sure you have plenty of snorkel equipment onboard
- you do not need experience to snorkel
BIG GAME FISHING
All year round in Bimini is perfect for Big Game Fishing , however there are certain seasons for specific fish like Wahoo, mackerel, white and blue marlin, tuna, grouper, snapper, and barracuda. No wonder Bimini earns the title of “ sports fishing capital of the world ”.
The best way to enjoy this trip is on a properly equipped fishing boat with a professional crew to assist you and your guests, ensuring an authentic fishing experience in Bimini.
- game fishing chart to help for certain seasonal fish
- professional fishing crew is highly recommended
- plenty of food and drinks, and sunblock
- early morning fishing is the best time
WATER ACTIVITIES
Being a small island, Bimini is surrounded by unreal turquoise waters which makes it a perfect location to relax in the sun on the pristine white beaches. Or for the more adventurous, there is also kayaking , paddle board , snorkeling , scuba diving and jet skiing . Your chartered yacht is fully equipped for water activities, but if anything is missing our crew will make sure to get it to you in no time!
GOLF CART HOP ON, HOP OFF
Bimini is so small that renting a car is neither necessary nor an option. You can make your way around North Bimini in less than 30 minutes by golf cart. There are more than 10 golf cart rental companies on the island, making it easy to rent one for the day. Do as the locals and take a short, leisurely drive to the corner store, or to eat at one of the many restaurants (pass by Bimini Big John’s Bar & Grill) , head to the beach, or try your luck at the casino. The locals are incredibly nice and welcoming, always ready to give advice for the best local food and live music. There is also a daily ferry service between North and South Bimini, though you will find more to do on the North side.

PLANNING YOUR TRIP TO BIMINI
Typical departure from Miami is early in the morning around 9am, for timely arrival in Bimini to clear customs ( passports needed ). You should be ready to pick up your golf cart at the marina by 2pm. We will make sure marina dockage and golf cart are reserved so you can enjoy and relax from the moment you arrive. Drive around the Island and pass by Joe’s Conch Shack have their famous conch salad and you may even catch them cleaning and prepping it (see picture below). Conch is the most famous seafood dish in Bimini so you may also want to try Stuarts delicious conch salad.
You can go around the island and stop by the beaches for a swim, stop by a shack and enjoy a local Kalik beer while enjoying the view of pastel colored wooden homes and breathe in the fresh ocean air. Once you finished exploring it’s time to go back to the marina, relax on your boat and get ready for dinner. You may choose a fancy dinner at Sabor restaurant inside the Hilton Resorts World Bimini or a local laid back option like Edith’s Pizza , which serves a lot more than pizza. Finish your night at the Casino at Hilton Resorts World Bimini. Or, if it’s a weekend, you may relax by the marina listening to live band music. Or, one of our weekend favorites is Big John’s Bar & Grill, which was just remodeled in April 2017
Let’s get the engine started and move the boat towards the area where dolphins like to hang around. If we’re lucky, you will be able to see some and even swim with them. We just ask that you keep in mind they are wild mammals and you should always take precautions.
We will mostly likely stop by the SSS Sapona Shipwreck by South Bimini, where you may enjoy amazing snorkeling . If your chartered yacht is equipped with a jet ski , this is the time to hop on one and take it around the shipwreck, jump in the water to snorkel and capture beautiful pictures to share back home.
On 2-night trips, we can take you to a private island called Cat Cay , located only 10 miles away from Bimini. Here visitors are permitted to moor for no more than 24 hours. Enjoy some fine cuisine at Nauticat Restaurant or Bu’s Bar for a more relaxed atmosphere.
The island is managed by Cat Cay Yacht Club and non-members may only visit accompanied by members. For a private tour for membership inquiries or more information, please visit their website.
CHOOSING A BOAT
Now let’s choose the perfect boat for you . It all depends how many guests are joining you and if you are planning to sleep on the boat or in a hotel.
We can help you choose from a medium size vessel like a 54’ Sea Ray Sundancer with 2 rooms or a 64’ Azimut with 3 staterooms. For fishing aficionados, we have a 50’ or a 60’ Hatteras fishing boat so you can enjoy Big Game Fishing.
Do you have a bigger budget in mind? We recommend a 75’ Sunseeker Manhattan which is ultra comfortable and luxurious equipped with all the amenities you may need. If you decide you rather stay overnight in a hotel than your chartered vessel, we can recommend one of our partner’s resorts.
Fishing charters are permitted for no more than 6 guests by law.
45′ Sessa C44
55′ Sea Ray 510 Fly
54′ Sea Ray 500 Sundancer

How much does it cost to charter a yacht from Miami to Bahamas?
Pricing depends on numerous factors such as how far you’d like to travel, how many days, and the type of food you’d like to eat. A chef who makes pizza, hot dogs, and hamburgers every day will charge less than a chef thats catering Filet Mignon, Caviar, and Roasted Duck. Pricing starts at $4,000 a day for one of our smaller boats and over $10,000 a day for one of our top tier luxury yachts .
Safety and Navigation Tips
- Weather Watch : Keep an eye on the weather, especially during hurricane season (June to November). Although no major hurricanes have hit recently there are stormy times of the year where you will want to just dock and not cruise.

Bahamas winters are cooler than the rest of the Caribbean, and temperatures can occasionally drop to the mid-to-low 60s, especially between December and February. Late spring and early summer have the best weather for boat rentals, with warm temperatures, calmer waters, sunny skies, and fair winds.

Crewed motor yachts are the perfect way to island-hop, seeing as many attractions as possible and then relaxing offshore to enjoy water sports and beachside activities. Crewed motor yachts also carry a wide range of recreational gear, from wakeboards and standup paddleboards to kayaks and Jet Skis, so there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

Bahamas Yacht Charters: What To See & Do
The Bahamas is one of the world’s most revered destinations for yacht rentals. The Bahamas are a paradise of postcard-worthy beaches, beautiful tropical weather, and amazing island adventures.
Some of the Greatest Beaches in the World
The beaches of the Bahamas form such an extraordinary collection of sand and warm turquoise waters that astronauts have praised them from space.
Whether you’d like to swim or snorkel, truly relax on a deserted beach, or head to the waves for some water sports, the Bahamas has plenty of stretches of sand for fun and adventure. Favorites include Pig Beach on Big Major Cay, Dean’s Blue Hole in the Exumas, Rose Island near Nassau, Pink Sands Beach on Harbour Island, Surfer’s Beach on Eleuthera, and Guana Cay and Tahiti Beach in the Abacos.
When you think you’ve tried them all, find your own deserted stretch of sand along an unnamed island to enjoy sunset cocktails or even a private beach picnic.
Crystal-Clear, Aquamarine Waters
The waters of the Bahamas are bathwater-warm year-round, hovering in the low 80s most of the year. Yet beyond their beckoning warmth, they’re also the clearest in all of the Caribbean. Expect 100-foot visibility in most seasons. That makes this the perfect destination for a cruising adventure. Whether you’d like to explore the vibrant and colorful corals, swim with sharks, or dive a blue hole, the islands’ inviting waters are the perfect setting.
Amazing Marine Life
The waters of the Bahamas boast a variety of marine ecosystems and an unparalleled opportunity to experience sea life. Witness massive humpbacks breaking surface waters, or swim with exotic tropical reef fish at James Bond’s Thunderball Grotto. Find world-class marlins and sailfish while deep-sea fishing in the Abacos. Stand at the bottom of the awe-inspiring shark exhibit at Atlantis, or feed stingrays in the lagoon on Paradise Island. Find Dolphin Cay and swim with dolphins at one of the largest marine habitats and animal rescue facilities in the world. With a Bahamas yacht charter, you can swim with the pigs at Pig Beach at Big Major Cay or dive into Compass Cay and get so close to nurse sharks that you can touch them!
World-Class Sporting Adventures
The warm turquoise seas of the Bahamas offer more than just wildlife. The clear, shallow waters are also the world’s largest playground. You can really do it all in the water: paddle-boarding, Jet Ski tours, kayaking hidden coves, wakeboarding, knee-boarding, and water-skiing. Plus, most crewed charter yachts include a garage of gear to help you have fun in the water.
Head to Surfer’s Beach in Eleuthera for big wintertime swells; it’s perfect for surfing or kitesurfing. Staniel Cay is a great paddleboarding and kayaking spot, thanks to its protected, calm waters. And taking a Jet Ski jaunt around the islands is always fun.
Great Golfing
Test your land legs at the Ocean Club Golf Course on Paradise Island, recognized as one of the top ten resort courses in North America and the Caribbean by Golf Digest. Or set sail to Emerald Bay to play a round at its Greg Norman-designed course.

Should You Charter a Yacht From Florida to The Bahamas?
The answer is YES & NO; depending on time, budget, and Bahamas destination. These variables change with each yacht charter. So the real question is: How do you maximize your time while getting the most out of your budget?
These breathtaking islands are only a short distance from Florida, making them the ideal cruising destination for your next vacation or holiday. We can help you to plan and execute your perfect yachting vacation , avoiding some common pitfalls that many of our charter clients have fallen victim to.
In this article, we will discuss the best way to get to popular Bahama destinations when planning a yacht charter Bahamas vacation to ensure your vacation is nothing but smooth sailing.
Bimini, Bahamas
Yacht Charters from Fort Lauderdale or Miami To Bimini, Does it Make Sense?
The short answer is yes, you should leave Florida to Bimini. It rarely makes sense to meet your yacht in Bimini.
Bimini is an excellent choice for a charter destination leaving from South Florida especially Miami, it’s only 50 nautical miles away and easy to get to with straight shot across the Gulf Stream. The best time to cross the Gulf Stream is in the summer months when the water is calmer. It’s also stunningly beautiful.
If you’re chartering a motor yacht, it is possible to go from Miami to Bimini in under 3 hours, making a day trip a possibility. However, a day trip can be very cost inefficient, especially considering most of your day will be cruising across the gulf stream and not enjoying the beautiful Bahamian waters.
Find out more about luxury Miami yacht rentals so you can get a head start on your trip! CharterLux has plenty of yachts to choose from and can help you throughout the entire process.
We recommend a 3-day charter to get the most out of your trip.
Note: We do not recommend day trips on holidays when customs can be backed up.
Yacht Charters Abaco & Exuma Bahamas
Yacht Charter from Fort Lauderdale or Miami To Nassau
The answer is no, you shouldn’t charter a yacht from South Florida to the Bahamas (except Bimini), but the answer isn’t short.
If you’re looking to charter a yacht in the Bahamas for 7-10 days you most likely would be visiting the islands of the Abacos and Exumas. Most charter yachts depart from the capital of the Bahamas (Nassau) mainly for the reasons below.
Things to Consider When Chartering a Yacht From Florida to Bahamas:
Financial considerations.
Sales Tax – Sales tax in the Bahamas is 4% versus 7% in South Florida [Palm Beach County (West Palm Beach), Broward County (Fort Lauderdale) and Dade County (Miami)].
Price of Fuel – Fuel prices are around half the price in Florida than in the Bahamas.
Amount of Fuel – The amount of fuel the yacht will consume to get to the Bahamas & back to Florida could supersede the repositioning fee it will cost you to relocate the yacht.
Time – Miami to Nassau is 160nm, which means it would take one full day to arrive in Nassau, costing you a significant amount of money in fuel and wasted time cruising to your destination. The amount of time (money) it will take cruising to the Bahamas and back to Florida will most likely supersede the repositioning fee charged by the yacht owner and can take two days out of your Bahamas yacht charter.
Cost Savings Example:
- 100ft+ yacht that charters for $50,000 a week ($7,142 a day)
- Cruises 16knts @ 120gph fuel burn
- 10hrs (each way) x 2 = 20hrs
- 20hrs x120gph = 2,400gal
- 2,400gal x $3.50gal (est.) = $8,400
- Lose two days of time traveling open ocean that could be spent in the Abacos or Exumas – $7,142 a day x 2 =$14,284
- $5,000 Repo fee (est.)
- $8,400 fuel + $14,284 in charter time – $5,000 repo fee = $17,684 in savings!
Legal Considerations
Liability – Most yachts will have to charter off of a Demise/Bareboat charter agreement if departing from U.S. waters. Departing from Bahamian waters you can charter off of a Time Charter Agreement, limiting your liability as a charterer.
Vessel Status – Foreign flagged vessels that have not paid their U.S. duties by law cannot charter from U.S. waters.
Accessibility
Mother Nature– Weather can affect the amount of time it takes cruising to your destination. It’s never fun to sail through rough weather. Once you are in the Bahamas your captain should be able to alter your itinerary to best avoid rough seas.
International Airport– Nassau has an international airport which has direct flights from Fort Lauderdale and many more cites.

What people are saying
“Canvas Yacht Charters and Doug are a pleasure to work with. Doug’s follow-up skills are remarkable and attention to detail are bar none. I very rarely leave reviews, but I can, without a doubt, recommend Canvas and Doug to everyone I know. Thanks again D!”
“We recently celebrated our 25th anniversary with three other couples, our dearest friends, on a week-long sailing charter. The trip was arranged by Doug Tibbs at Canvas Yacht Charters, and his assistance was invaluable every step of the way. He listened to our dreams for the trip, the things we were really hoping for and things we wanted to avoid, non-negotiates and crazy ideas, and he filtered them all to present us with several charter options, any one of which would have been wonderful, but we ended up on Ghost. Doug’s attention didn’t stop with the booking. He made sure we were kept aware of various important deadlines, including changes related to covid, connected us with the crew and conveyed to them all our preferences, and was available throughout to answer our big and small questions. This was truly the trip of a lifetime for every one of us onboard—the boat, the crew, the sailing, the food, the adventure. So many thanks to Doug for his care to make it everything we dreamed it could be—and we are already hoping to plan a repeat trip for next year!”
“It’s not often that I end up leaving a review for a service I didn’t end up booking, but the super customer service I received from Heather at Starrluxe definitely merits noting. From the first step in the process, she was helpful, professional, and extremely accommodating despite a difficult itinerary and an expedited time frame. She provided excellent options and went out of her way to address our every requirement. I deeply regret that our travel plans changed and we weren’t able to finalize our charter, but I greatly look forward to working with Starrluxe again in the future. Highly recommend!”
“Enjoyed working with Doug. He was attentive to our needs/desires. Got us a great boat with a great crew. He even got us a price reduction. I will look forward to working with him again.”
“Doug and his team helped us book a trip in two days for the following week. Great communications and expectation setting, which helped make the trip successful. We will recommend them to family and friends for their trips. -Cheers, John”

Rent a Boat Charter in Bimini, Bahamas with Sailo!
Choosing a boat rental in Bimini, Bahamas? Adventures await you in beautiful Bahamas — there a lot of things to do in Bimini ! Nestled in the Bahamas not too far when sailing the southern Florida coast , Bimini is an island destination you’ve got to add to your travel bucket list. And like all of the other tropical vacation areas we recommend to travelers on Sailo, Bimini is a fantastic area to explore by boat rental.
Because Bimini is located only 50 miles from Florida, why not book a boat rental from Miami or Fort Lauderdale to Bimini so you can take the boating trip of your dreams to some of the most beautiful islands in the world? Here’s everything you need to know about your Bimini boat rental, from how to find the perfect yacht charter to what to do once you get to the islands.
Finding a Bimini boat rental
Thanks to Sailo’s convenient, user-friendly platform, finding a yacht charter for your trip from south Florida to Bimini or other islands in the Bahamas has never been easier. Use Sailo’s filters to customize your search by boat type ( sailboat rentals in Bimini , motor boat charters in Bimini , catamaran rentals in Bimini , or Bimini party boats ), price, number of people in your party, whether you need a captain or are renting bareboat, and your travel dates, as well as other filters that can narrow your results to your specific needs. This convenient search tool makes finding your Bimini boat rental simple and quick since you can select your preferences to find the exact charter you need for your trip.
Daily rentals are very common in South Florida, but because Bimini is so close, many visitors like to charter an overnight yacht and sail to Bimini for a slice of island paradise during their vacation to the area.
Overnight from South Florida to Bimini
Since visiting Bimini by a yacht charter from Florida is highly popular, we recommend renting a boat in Miami, Miami Beach, or Fort Lauderdale, sailing to Bimini, and staying overnight for one or multiple days at a time.
We recommend spending a long weekend in Bimini. Arrive in Miami or Fort Lauderdale and sail to Bimini, one of our favorite island destinations in the stunning Bahamas. Gorgeous blue waters will greet you with sparkling waves as you sail to paradise. Once you arrive, you’ve got to spend some time exploring the beautiful beaches that line the islands, as well as local cays like Honeymoon and Gun Cay.
And since tropical vacations are even more fun when you dive in the water and embrace the ocean to the fullest, we recommend checking with the boat owner to see if your rental can include water sports equipment for activities like snorkeling.
It’s also very popular to go on overnight fishing trips to this area, another activity you can ask the boat owner about.
In addition to trying the local Bahamian cuisine and checking out the shops and beaches on the island, you’ve got to add the S.S. Sapona to your list of must-sees in Bimini. This shipwreck is great to explore, whether you’re snorkeling or even fishing here.
Things to do in Bimini, Bahamas
You’ve got to take into account the weather when booking your Bimini boat rental as this area is known for tropical storms that can be pretty unpredictable. You never know when inclement weather may impact your trip or hinder your ability to sail from South Florida to the Bimini islands.
We recommend taking a look at the historic weather averages during the time you plan on sailing and booking your yacht charter during a time with typically milder weather, or at least avoiding peak hurricane season from June through October.
If you are looking for more recommendations or tips for visiting Bimini by a yacht charter, whether you’re traveling with a group, as a couple, with your family, or even by yourself on a solo sailing trip, we highly recommend reaching out to the boat representative to gain more insight on boat rentals in Bimini and the south Florida area. You can also check out the Bimini boat rental guide on Sailo .
Looking to spend a few days in South Florida before or after you rent a boat for Bimini? Check out our local destination guides for things to do in Miami, FL , things to do in Fort Lauderdale, FL or West Palm Beach attractions by boat .
What’s stopping you from booking the Bimini boat rental of your dreams? Your tropical vacation in paradise awaits you!

Charters from Miami to the Bahamas
We probably get one or two phone calls or emails a day from clients looking to get from Miami or Fort Lauderdale to “The Bahamas”. OK, let’s just forget for a minute that there are over 700 islands in the Bahamas and that yachts are the most expensive way to travel ANYWHERE.
1. The Bahamas group of Islands are some of the most beautiful in the world. Some of our favorites are the Exumas, the Abacos, the Out-Islands, Nassau (if you’re into cities, shopping and casinos), Freeport (if you’re into cities, shopping and casinos), Bimini, if you’re into sports-fishing, The Berry Islands if you’re in Miami and want total isolation to unwind for a few days, they are about 100 miles from Miami.
For in-depth information on the various islands please check our Bahamas section .
2. There is no ferry service from Miami or Fort Lauderdale to the Bahamas at all. There is a small catamaran ferry service that is called Balearia Express Ferries that leaves from Fort Lauderdale and goes to Freeport and back.
3. There are inter-island ferries and mail-boat services available once you get to the Bahamas, both private and government operated. They run on regular schedules but these schedules are approximate and they don’t run every day. You can go here for valuable information regarding ferries in the Bahamas.
Remember that although Bimini is only 40 miles from the mainland you have to cross the Gulf Stream which is notoriously treacherous when there is any kind of brisk wind. Bimini is a sports fishing center and there’s not much else to do except fishing.
A day trip to Bimini on a small or medium sized motor yacht can cost between $2k and $5K depending on the number of guests and the size of the boat. There is a 12 passenger maximum for most charter yachts. You can also fly to Bimini by air taxi.
5. Bareboat sailing in the Bahamas is limited to the Abacos, contact us for details .
6. When planning a sailing or yachting vacation in the Bahamas, it’s always better to fly into the island or group of islands you’d like to explore. For example, if you’d like to explore the Exumas, fly into Nassau or Staniel Cay and have the yacht pick you up there. If you’d like to explore the out islands fly into Georgetown. For the Abacos, fly into Marsh harbour.
DON’T use a charter yacht for transportation, private yachts are great for vacations but make lousy and expensive ferries. DO use a yacht for a vacation experience, the beaches are marvelous and the diving superb. Have a GREAT vacation.

I Flew This Semi-private Airline’s New Route From Palm Beach to the Bahamas' Out Islands — and Airfare Was Actually Affordable
Tropic Ocean Airways' new flight from Palm Beach, Florida, to the Bahamas offers a VIP experience. Plus, it's dog-friendly.
Skye Sherman/Travel + Leisure
I’ve always sung the praises of West Palm Beach , and one of my favorite things about living here is the ease of access to the Caribbean. From Miami International Airport (MIA), you can hop to almost any island in an hour or less; Palm Beach is so close to the Bahamas, you can practically swim there (no, seriously, people paddleboard to Bimini every year to raise money for charity).
Thanks to long-standing routes to Nassau (Silver Airways) and Marsh Harbour (Bahamasair), it’s always been easy to jump from Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) — consistently rated one of the best U.S. airports by Travel + Leisure readers — to the Bahamas . But with the arrival of a new semi-private route from Palm Beach’s private terminal to Marsh Harbour, the trip is more VIP than ever.
With a fleet of 14 aircraft, Fort Lauderdale–based Tropic Ocean Airways is the largest commercial seaplane airline in the world, offering private charters, yacht transfers, and scheduled flights throughout Florida, the Bahamas, and the Hamptons.
Skye Sherman/Travel + Leisure
Beginning May 2024, the airline made its first venture into Palm Beach with the launch of additional operations out of Atlantic Aviation (a private fixed-based operator across the tarmac from the PBI), offering nonstop trips to the Abacos. It’s a shared private flight experience that’s bookable by the seat — and, round-trip, only a couple hundred dollars more than commercial prices. As if that weren’t enough, the pet-friendly airline even allows you to bring your dog.
“Expanding our operations to Palm Beach is a natural progression for us, and we are looking forward to providing travelers in this region with the same exceptional service and convenience that our passengers in Fort Lauderdale and Miami have received for the last 13 years,” Rob Ceravolo, former United States Navy fighter pilot and CEO and founder of Tropic Ocean Airways, said in a release.
I recently tried the new route with a friend, and it was the perfect way to begin and end our girls’ weekend in Hope Town. The appeal of flying Tropic is obvious before you even get to the airport: You’re directed to arrive a mere 30 minutes before the scheduled international departure time. The private side of PBI is a far cry from your standard commercial experience.
After parking right out front (for free), you’ll enter Atlantic Aviation and find a plush seat to await the arrival of your pilots, who double as your gate agents. There are nicely stocked vending machines if you get peckish, but you won’t be waiting long, plus there’s no security line or crowds to navigate.
A pair of pilots arrive shortly before your flight and introduce themselves, check your passport against their manifest, take your luggage (there’s a generous 50-ound allowance per person), and then walk you out to the nine-seat Cessna Grand Caravan EX to load up.

Sit anywhere — they’re all single window seats except for a two-person bench up front. The pilots provide a safety briefing, and before you know it, you’re airborne over the remarkable blues of the Atlantic, then touching down in Marsh Harbour.
Even my friend — who was apprehensive about the small plane — remarked how pleasant the flight felt. She paged through a book, then drifted off to sleep, lulled by the gentle drone of the engines and smooth air.
Marsh Harbour on Great Abaco is the final destination for some, but it’s also the main hub connecting to other Out Islands in the Abacos — like Hope Town and Man-O-War Cay, both accessible via all-day scheduled ferries by Albury’s Ferry Service .
I grew up visiting the Abacos, but sadly many islands and settlements were decimated by Hurricane Dorian in 2019. While Hope Town and Elbow Cay haven’t been fully restored to their former glory, there are several hotels, restaurants, and shops up and running and eager to welcome visitors.
We stayed at Elbow Reef , a boutique eight-room hotel that was completely rebuilt after the hurricane and reopened in 2023. Our room faced the Atlantic Ocean (it stormed for most of our trip, but thanks to the view, we didn’t mind the forced relaxation). Within a few steps, you can be lounging at the infinity pool or strolling the soft-sand beach.
The hotel’s vibe is laid-back, though also an ideal setting for a group trip or family reunion .
In addition to minibars in each room and a rack of surfboards, the property offers a shared main space with a kitchen and bar featuring professional-grade appliances so you can cook a meal or shake up poolside drinks (or recruit a chef to come do it for you).
It also has a 130-foot dock across the street if you choose to BYOB (bring your own boat) or charter a private ferry instead of scheduled service.
While Tropic will get you from West Palm Beach to Marsh Harbour in a swift 60 to 80 minutes, to reach Elbow Reef, you’ll still need a 15-minute taxi from Cherokee Aviation to the ferry dock, a 15-minute ferry to Hope Town, and a 10-minute golf cart ride to the hotel.
Renting a golf cart is nonnegotiable in Hope Town; there’s no other way to get around. Low Cay Cart Rentals will deliver and pick up your golf cart wherever you please, making the process seamless.
Due to the success of the route, Tropic Ocean Airways is doubling the frequency and will begin flying every Wednesday, Thursday, Sunday, and Monday beginning Oct. 16. Prices range from $237 to $450 per seat.

Battling credit card dispute
(WSVN) - A man chartered a yacht, he took the trip, and then disputed the charge claiming he was never on it. The credit card agreed with him, but there was video and that’s when the call went out to Help Me Howard with Patrick Fraser.
A 120-foot yacht. All yours for you and your family. Not a bad way to spend the day.
Tharine Ives: “So she can sleep 8 people. It’s a full crew on board. All the water toys that you can want.
Tharine and Sean own All Yachting– connecting boat owners to people who want to rent their yacht for a day or two.
Tharine Ives: “When I tell you about your vacation, you gonna go on a yacht. I get excited because it’s really actually fun.”
This summer Tharine was contacted by a man vacationing in the Bahamas who wanted to charter this yacht for an afternoon. She sent him the paperwork.
Tharine Ives: “He signed it. It came back then from there. Then from there, I process the credit card I say, ‘Great, you are good to go.'”
The fellow identified himself as Thomas West, paid 15,000 dollars on his credit card, and boarded with seven family members, using the jet skis that day, meals prepared by the chef, and at the end of the day told the captain how much they loved it.
Tharine Ives: “And while they were still on board, they wanted to give the crew an extra gratuity of $3,500.”
A $3,500 tip bringing the credit card charge to $18,860. But a few days later the Ives were notified the man who chartered the yacht was disputing the charge.
Sean Ives: “The reason that was given was fraud.”
That baffled the Ives, but they weren’t worried and sent all the paperwork to American Express, proving the family had taken the trip.
Tharine Ives: “And then about five days later, they came back saying that they ruled in favor of the client and the case is now closed.”
At first, the Ives feared an imposter had used Thomas West’s credit card, but the video cameras on the yacht showed the person, who called himself Thomas West, matched the social media account of Thomas West.
Sean Ives: “Even on his Instagram pages, he was wearing exactly the same bathing suit that he wore when he was on the boat and the same tattoos. It was very, very, very noticeable that the real Thomas West was the client that was actually on the boat.”
Sean called the man—
Tharine Ives: “And he said, ‘Sorry, brother you’ve got the wrong number.'”
The Ives wanted to show American Express their videos plus more paperwork to prove the man had charted the boat.
Tharine Ives: “Unfortunately, with American Express, once they ruled, they do not reopen a case.”
Meaning Sean and Tharine have to pay the crew and the yacht owner for the charter, crushing for a business.
Tharine Ives: “It’s a horrible feeling. You feel so helpless.”
Well, Howard, Tharine feels helpless but is their case hopeless?
Howard Finkelstein: “First of all if you knowingly try to avoid paying for a service you received, that is a crime and should be reported to the police. Secondly, American Express’ contract allows them to solely determine whether a chargeback is valid or not without a process for you to contest their decision. That means your only option is to sue the person who disputed the charge, and for many people that’s too expensive to do.”
We called the man whose name was on the contract. He admitted he was Thomas West, but denied every chartering a yacht in the Bahamas. When we said his social media pictures seem to match the fellow getting on the yacht, he said ‘Call my lawyer’ and hung up. He didn’t tell us who his lawyer was. We then contacted American Express. They told us they would look into the chargeback. Tharine then got an email from them.
Tharine Ives: “And they said ‘Yes, American Express has revised it and they are refunding us the money.'”
Needless to say, Tharine and Sean are happy to have the 18,000 plus back and also happy they decided to make that call to Help me Howard.
Tharine Ives: “You’re doing incredible work, and just continue. And thank you, thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
Now it may not be over yet. American Express notified the Ives the cardholder is disputing the charge again. He told us he didn’t take the charter. He told American Express he paid for the charter by other means. Howard doubts that will work and thinks the Ives will keep their $18,860.
Feeling shipwrecked? Ready to cruise back to safety? Charter a few minutes with us to settle the dispute. With this Help me Howard, I’m Patrick Fraser 7News.
