The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection marked a significant construction milestone with the successful float out of its next superyacht, Ilma , at Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France. This traditional maritime celebration brought together senior leadership and shipbuilders in anticipation of Ilma touching water for the first time, signifying the commencement of its next phase of construction in preparation for its maiden voyage in 2024.

The float out event was attended by company leadership from The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection including Jim Murren , Executive Chairman and CEO, and Ernesto Fara , President and CFO. Also present were representatives from Chantiers de l’Atlantique, including Laurent Castaing , General Manager, and Arnaud Le Joncour , Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing.

As part of the float out, the yacht’s dry dock was filled with water overnight, then moved to an outfitting dock where it will remain for the rest of its build leading to sea trials in April and start of its first season. Now afloat, final-stage construction will focus on completing interiors, fixtures, and fittings for suites, restaurants, and other public spaces that will welcome guests to experience a new journey of discovery at sea in just less than a year.

“As we celebrate this remarkable milestone, we are immensely proud of the dedication and craftsmanship by all those involved in the construction of Ilma ,” remarked Jim Murren. “We are thrilled to have partnered with the team at Chantiers de l’Atlantique and are excited to enter the next stage of construction and outfitting in anticipation of the yacht’s inaugural journey next year, expanding our fleet and vision within the ultra-luxury space.”

Ilma , meaning “water” in Maltese, will be the second newbuild superyacht from The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection. Measuring 790-feet, the yacht will feature 224 airy, light-filled suites, all with private terraces, and will accommodate up to 448 passengers. Paving the way for a new era of cruising, this brand extension introduces an entirely unique experience at sea, illustrating the ongoing commitment to innovative luxury travel experiences from The Ritz-Carlton. Ilma will offer expansive public spaces and will have one of the highest space ratios at sea, ensuring an exceptional journey.

The onboard experience will reflect the unparalleled lifestyle and legendary service for which The Ritz-Carlton brand is recognized, including state-of-the-art technology, five distinct dining venues, and a Ritz-Carlton Spa®. Delivering thoughtfully curated itineraries and unforgettable journeys for guests, Ilma will join the company’s first yacht Evrima in visiting the most coveted destinations in the Mediterranean and Caribbean, with select ports of call in Central America and South America, depending on the season.

The yacht’s sleek and graceful exterior design, expertly crafted by Helsinki-based design studio Aivan , draws inspiration from the elegant aesthetics of private yacht design. Interiors will seamlessly blend warmth and sophistication with a relaxed atmosphere, showcasing modern craftsmanship and interior finishes imagined by AD Associates , a renowned London-based architectural and design firm, and award-winning lighting designer, DPA .

“We are thrilled to witness Ilma ’s float out. Ilma embodies Chantiers de l’Atlantique’s dedication to ultra-luxury,” expressed Arnaud Le Joncour. “This milestone marks the beginning of the next construction phase of outfitting. Drawing inspiration from Ilma ’s elegance, clean lines, and unique features, our teams are united in the pursuit of meeting the expectations of today’s most discerning luxury travelers.”

After years of delays, Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection turns to experienced shipyard for 2 new ships

Gene Sloan

The new cruise line under development by Ritz-Carlton on Thursday announced it had ordered two more new ships -- even as it continues a multiyear struggle to bring out its first vessel.

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection said in a press release that it had contracted with the giant Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in St. Nazaire, France, for the construction of two 456-passenger "superyachts" to be delivered in 2024 and 2025. The ships will be called Ilma and Luminara.

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection said the deal with Chantiers de l'Atlantique also included options for additional vessels.

The announcement comes just weeks after The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection pushed back the debut of its first vessel , the 298-passenger Evrima, by three months to Aug. 6. It was the sixth time that the company had pushed back the debut of Evrima, which originally was due to begin sailing in early 2020.

The arrival of Evrima is now 30 months behind schedule.

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection originally ordered Evrima in 2017 from a shipyard in Vigo, Spain – Hijos de J. Barreras – that had no experience building luxury cruise vessels. Hijos de J. Barreras got its start building fishing vessels, which was its specialty for many years, and it has built ferries, container ships and other specialized vessels in the past.

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection later blamed troubles at the shipyard for many of the delays in Evrima's construction. The vessel, still unfinished, was moved several months ago to a second shipyard facility in Santander, Spain, that specializes in ship conversions and repair projects.

The new shipyard that The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection will be using for its next ships, Chantiers de l'Atlantique, is one of the world's best-known cruise ship builders, with a history in passenger ship construction that goes back decades.

In the 1960s, Chantiers de l'Atlantique built the SS France, one of the most famous ocean liners of the 20th century. In more recent years, it has manufactured a long list of vessels for Royal Caribbean , Celebrity Cruises , MSC Cruises and other major cruise lines.

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection on Thursday said the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard would carry out all production and development of the two new vessels.

"We are thrilled to work with Chantiers de l'Atlantique on the development of our second and third superyachts, Ilma and Luminara," The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection CEO Douglas Prothero said in a statement accompanying the announcement. "They are a likeminded organization that is committed to excellence and a custom quality process and program that will help execute our vision as we thoughtfully expand our portfolio."

A spokesperson for The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection told TPG that Evrima will continue to be finished at the shipyard where it currently resides, the Astander shipyard in Santander, Spain.

As of Thursday, The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection still contends that Evrima will debut in August.

The two new ships on order will be significantly bigger than Evrima at 46,750 gross register tons. Evrima will measure about 24,000 gross register tons. The new ships will be 794 feet long as compared to 623 feet long for Evrima.

As part of its Thursday announcement, the company said the two new ships would feature the highest space-to-passenger ratio and the highest staff-to-passenger ratio of any luxury vessels in the cruise industry.

Both of the new vessels will be all-suite ships, with 228 suites in all, according to the line. The biggest suites on the ship will measure 1,076 square feet.

The new ships are set to have five restaurants, six bars, a wine vault, a marina and a spa.

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection said the new vessels would operate in the Caribbean and the Mediterranean, but specific itineraries weren't announced. Passengers will be able to book 2024 sailings on the first of the two vessels this fall.

Shipbuilding: the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard will build two luxury yachts for the Ritz-Carlton

The Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard has signed a new contract for two luxury superyachts from the Ritz-Carlton.

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection , a new player in the world of cruising, has confirmed an order to Chantiers de l’Atlantique for two “super yachts”: the Ilma and the Luminara . The construction of two additional ships could also be planned as an option for this contract.

The Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard, located in Saint-Nazaire in the Atlantic France region, is expanding its portfolio. The company, which has 3,400 employees and a turnover of €2 billion, has signed a new contract for two luxury superyachts from the Ritz-Carlton.

228-suite, high-end luxury ships

The group that owns the famous Ritz-Carlton hotel chain wants to establish itself in the luxury cruise sector. The two new ships, Ilma and Luminara , are respectively planned for 2024 and 2025 and will be 242 metres long. Following the construction of the gigantic Wonder of the Seas and its 6,400 passenger capacity, the shipbuilder Chantiers de l’Atlantique is tackling the ultra-luxury market.

The two new Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection ships are both inspired by the Evrima , which will be inaugurated in 2021, with the first cruise scheduled for August 2022. Private terraces have been announced for each of the 228 suites, which will measure up to 100 square meters. On board, there will be five restaurants, six bars and a wine cellar. Once in operation, the yachts will offer 7-10 day, all-inclusive cruises in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean.

LNG-fuelled vessels

This order represents 2 million working hours, equivalent to one year’s activity, and an investment of €800 million. Each ship will be equipped with four hybrid engines and will use liquefied natural gas (LNG) as its primary fuel, significantly reducing its emissions compared to traditional vessels. The yachts will also have sophisticated water treatment systems, an efficient heat recovery system, LED lighting and other features to reduce environmental impact.

Ilma, The Ritz-Carlton Collection's second vessel, floated out last week at the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France. Now afloat, final-stage construction will focus on completing interiors, fixtures, and fittings for suites, restaurants, and other public spaces.

The float-out was attended by company leadership from The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, including Jim Murren, executive chairman and CEO, and Ernesto Fara, president and CFO.

The 448-passenger Ilma is scheduled to launch in September 2024.

Ritz-Carlton’s $6,400-a-week luxury superyacht cruise has finally set sail

(CNN) — Ritz-Carlton’s highly-anticipated superyacht cruise has finally made its debut, three and a half years after its maiden voyage was originally scheduled to begin.

Evrima, the first of three custom-built yachts from the famous hotel chain’s Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, began a seven-night cruise from Barcelona, Spain to Nice, France on October 15.

The 190-meter vessel, which can accommodate 298 passengers, is made up of 149 suites with a private terrace, as well as floor to ceiling windows, and features an infinity pool, a wine vault, a Ritz-Carlton Spa, a nightclub and its very own “marina.”

Rates for a one-week stay start at $6,400 per person for Mediterranean voyages, while Caribbean voyages begin at $5,100 per person, with accommodation options ranging from standard cabins, to two-story “loft-style” apartments, and a sprawling 1,091- square-foot “owner’s suite” with a private hot tub.

Hotels at sea

Those who splash out of these luxury cruises can expect “service at a gold standard” — the yacht claims one of the highest staff and space to guest ratios at sea — as well as fine dining experiences, complimentary water sports, and on-board entertainment.

There’s also a dedicated on-board children’s facility with a jam-packed program for those aged from four to 12.

Evrima, which means discovery in Greek, will sail to a range of destinations throughout the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, as well as Central America and South America, with most cruise durations ranging from seven to 10 nights.

The luxury yacht is to be followed by two others, Ilma and Luminara, currently under construction at Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France.

Ritz-Carlton first announced plans to move into the luxury yachting world back in 2017, describing the venture as “a hybrid between luxury cruising and yachting.”

“The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection is revolutionizing the luxury cruising industry, creating an entirely unique category designed for those in search of unmatched getaways, highly curated itineraries, insider access and a level of personalization previously unseen in the space,” Douglas Prothero, chief executive officer for the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection said in a statement.

Future of cruising?

“Every element of the luxury yachting experience was considered when designing and creating Evrima, and we are excited to deliver unforgettable journeys for both longtime cruisers and those who are new to the industry.”

All three of the superyachts will be available for private charter. While Ritz-Carlton have not revealed the charter price, it’s safe to assume that those who opt to hire the vessels out will need pretty deep pockets.

“We are thrilled to introduce The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection and usher in an exciting new chapter for this beloved brand,” says Chris Gabaldon, senior vice president for luxury brands at Marriott International.

The launch of Evrima has been rescheduled several times due to supply chain issues and the global pandemic.

Earlier this month, the Four Seasons announced plans for its first vessel, a 14-deck, 207-meter-long superyacht with 95 suites, which is scheduled to enter service in late 2025.
