VOICE features

VOICE is a bespoke 62m super yacht meticulously crafted to embody the Owners' unique vision. Reflective of its namesake, music holds profound significance in the lives of her Owner. Their desire for an immersive audio experience led to the integration of top-tier sound systems tailored for audiophiles.

The desired sound levels were deliberately kept to a minimum, surpassing the criteria necessary for the RINA classification society’s Comfort Class notation. Attaining these specifications wasn't merely a contractual obligation but also a source of engineering pride.

Crafted specifically for this vessel, the steel displacement hull features a bulbous bow beneath a sleek entry, meticulously designed and tested using CFD analysis and real-life simulations in a water tank. The exterior designs striking visual identity is enhanced by the personalized color scheme, including a smoky quartz hull, silver sand superstructure, and jet black detailing, all contributing to the yacht's unique and commanding presence.

Within the yacht's interiors, under the direction of Valentina Zannier, head of Nuvolari Lenard's interior division, lies a wealth of intricate detailing. One notable example, as pointed out by the yacht's architect, is a recurring geometric pattern adorning a custom-made rug and intricately fashioned wooden furniture crafted by List.

Equipped with the HUG scrubbing system and Selective Catalytic Reduction technology, the yacht achieves an impressive 70 percent reduction in total NOx emissions, in line with CRN's progressive standards. Furthermore, it has attained an additional AUT - UMS class notation, signifying its machinery's capacity to operate independently, without continuous engineer intervention.

CRN Delivers 62 Metre Superyacht CRN 137 Voice

Italian shipyard  CRN  has delivered its 62 metre Nuvolari Lenard-designed superyacht CRN 137, which has been named Voice .

The yacht is now cruising the Mediterranean on its maiden voyage. It comes after the IMO Tier III certified superyacht first hit the water in November.

Ferretti Group chief operating officer Stefano de Vivo previously said the finished fully customised yacht sports a "really contemporary, fantastic design."

Completed at CRN's Ancona facility, CRN 137 was designed by Nuvolari Lenard inside and out, working closely with CRN's in-house technical facility.

The yard previously revealed that the yacht sports "the unmistakable all-Italian style of Nuvolari Lenard", with "rakish yet harmonious lines that seem to be shaped by the wind."

"The bow is vertical, not to follow the current trend, but to ensure maximum length in the water, thereby increasing speed and maximising the forward volumes, where the  tender garage  is located."

The layout comprises accommodation for 12 guests split across six cabins. The raised  owner's deck  boasts direct access to the al fresco dining area aft and the panoramic observation lounge forward.

Power comes from a pair of 2,011hp MTU 12V 4000 engines for a top speed of 16.5 knots.

M/Y Voice: A CRN bespoke masterpiece

The 62m custom superyacht is both an aesthetic and a technological marvel….

Image for article M/Y Voice: A CRN bespoke masterpiece

One of the most notable new yacht launches in the past year, the elegant 62m M/Y Voice was built by CRN Shipyard – a part of the Ferretti group. Voice was designed in collaboration with Italian architecture studio Nuvolari Lenard, who worked closely with the shipyard to develop the initial concept, as well as the interior and exterior styling. A fully-custom yacht that spans five decks, she can accommodate 12 guests across six cabins, arranged as an owner’s suite and five VIP cabins.   The customisation showcased in various elements of Voice demonstrates the CRN commitment to precisely fulfil the owner’s vision ; an ethos that is reflected in the yard’s payoff : “Made by you, with our own hands”. As for all CRN bespoke yachts, her owner was intricately involved in the creation of Voice and directly supervised the entire design and build process. The distinctive, aerodynamic, bold lines, that stand out for miles, and sharp profile of Voice was a particular area of focus for him, holding over 40 meetings with the dedicated shipyard’s project management team to ensure this specific element of the yacht’s design was exactly as he imagined. The unique smokey quartz coloured hull is a fully-custom replica of the shade that adorns the owner’s favorite car – a specific request from the client – which perfectly complements the silver sand superstructure and jet black details.   One of the stand-out features on board Voice is the state-of-the-art music system, reflecting a lifelong passion of the owner. The audio system throughout the yacht was meticulously designed to mirror the quality typically found within a music studio. To achieve the soundproofing requested by the owner and see a noise reduction of up to 60 decibels on board, 70 tonnes of insulating materials were used throughout Voice , with the build team focusing particularly on the partition bulkheads and internal dividing doors.   In addition to her stunning design, the owner was determined to create a high-performance vessel that outshone her peers in terms of technology and safety. As a result, Voice can achieve an impressive maximum speed of 16.5 knots with a range of 5,500 miles and is fully autonomous so can be sailed without the supervision of a chief engineer. Reflecting the needs of clients in the modern age, Voice features the highest standards of cyber security systems to protect all those on board, certified by Lloyd's Register.   Voice is the first CRN superyacht to earn IMO Tier III certification, to be followed by the others CRN fully-custom yachts currently under construction. This means her nitrogen oxide (NOx) exhaust emissions are 70% less than other yachts. A shining achievement for the shipyard, Voice is equipped with a state-out-the-art Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system that works by injecting urea in the exhaust system reducing the formation of NOx. The CRN technical engineering team worked tirelessly to develop this system that would deliver the results the owner wanted without detracting from the living space on board.   Following her delivery to her satisfied owner in the summer of 2020, Voice’s maiden voyage took place throughout the Mediterranean. A busy time for the shipyard, there are currently four other fully custom vessels in build at CRN Ancona shipyard: 62m M/Y 138, 72m M/Y 139, 60m M/Y 141 and 52m CRN M/Y 142.

CRN

Italian superyacht builder CRN has had a strong month, recently announcing the sale of a custom 170-ft. yacht and the delivery of another 203-footer to its owner. The company said on Friday that it had delivered M/Y 137, called Voice , to the owner and the happy family is now using it for a maiden Mediterranean cruise. The yacht was designed by Nuvolari Lenard, who did both the concept for the interior and exterior.

M/Y 137 has five decks, with a master suite and five VIP staterooms, with the upper deck reserved for the owner. That means more than a bedroom, but also a separate lounge forward for privacy or entertaining friends. The yacht is also the first from the Italian shipyard to be IMO Tier III compliant, which means that nitrogen emissions have been cut by 70 percent.

CRN said in a separate statement that it will be building a custom 170-ft. all-aluminum yacht. Netherlands-based Omega Architects created the exterior concept, while Massair Design did the proposals for the interiors. CRN said both the interior and exterior were designed to mirror the client’s personality.

CRN

A sense of openness and space, but in a compact-looking profile, is becoming standard for next-gen yacht designs like this new 170-ft. CRN design that just found a new owner.  CRN

Design-wise, the yacht does look towards the future, with a low profile and vertical bow, and large windows along gunwales. There are also large exterior social areas on both the forward end and back in the cockpit, with a swimming pool and large swim platform. The upper and top decks also have open areas, though the upper deck has a lounge that allows for socializing and dining in air conditioning.

CRN said this new yacht will be its third successful collaboration with Netherlands-based Omega Architects. The other yachts were the 240-ft. Yalla and 203-ft. CRN M/Y 138, currently under construction.

The other yachts being built at CRN’s shipyard include the 236-ft. M/Y 139, 197-ft. M/Y 141 and the 203-ft. M/Y 138.

CRN Voice: Superyacht With Personality

yacht voice

Powerful and modern exterior lines, very special color tone and unmistakable foredeck give new CRN yacht M/Y Voice certain personality. We spoke with Carlo Nuvolari about their newest CRN launch, and also about the trends in the super yacht industry

We had a chance to speak about the latest CRN superyacht called Voice with her designer Carlo Nuvolari, co-founder along with Dan Lenard of world known Italian architecture studio Nuvolari Lenard.

CRN Voice megayacht

The new 62-metre megayacht with an 11.50-metre spans five decks with a master suite and five VIP cabins to accommodate 12 guests in exquisite comfort. The upper deck is the owner’s exclusive domain, with a suite to the stern and a panoramic lounge at the bow offering total privacy and a space to entertain friends.

Taut yet fluid, the aerodynamic external lines lend the CRN Voice strong character and an inimitably Italian touch. The striking impression is reinforced with the personalised colours of her smoky quartz hull, silver sand superstructure and jet black details.

Voice has a modern exterior look, what were her design guidelines? The stylistic cue of Voice refers to a design that creates a forceful, dynamic, powerful and sporty impression. But her signature feature is the long cadence of her lines. The gunwale swings along and down in a smooth unbroken curve from bow to stern; this has been a visual hallmark of ours for many years and creates an impression of extreme length and fluidity.

The yacht is really sleek and conveys a feeling of extreme speed but at the same time is characterized by wide and bright interiors. Voice has a really strong personality, she is unmistakable and stands out for miles not only for her bespoke colours but for the aerodynamic, taut and fluid external lines, with a strong identity.

What would you say are the highlights of this project? A distinctive feature of Voice is her strong personality, combined with an extreme cleanliness of the lines and the research for essentiality that is unmistakably found in her extremely wide and uncluttered foredeck. A highlight is also the view of the panoramic lounge at the bow on the upper deck, which is the owner’s exclusive domain; it is a truly unique area that offers maximum privacy on board and can also become a social space.

Another notable characteristic, courtesy of CRN’s in-depth expertise in designing and building tailor-made yachts, is the meticulous attention to the finest detail. As with every yacht that we have helped to make with CRN, Voice has been crafted with pinpoint precision; some stainless-steel fittings are real masterpieces. Also, the veranda structure with panoramic windows under the tree on the top deck is a wonderful area for enjoying breathtaking views of the sea.

What else makes her a bespoke yacht? Voice, like every other yacht we have realized with CRN, is a fully custom yacht, there is nothing that has not been expressly conceived, designed and made to measure for her Owner. The Owner is a very determined person, he has transferred to us and CRN his clear vision and his enthusiasm. He wanted a yacht that would represent him, that would make a lasting mark. Owners of fully custom luxury yachts , first of all, want their vessel to represent them, to be as unique as they are. A result that we have certainly achieved, together with CRN, a highly distinctive yacht with a potent personality and yet an exquisite balance among all her component elements.

CRN Voice Superyacht

What do you think about environmental protection and its connection to yachting? I believe that there is a growing sensitivity in the sector and among Owners towards this issue. Installing hybrid or electric systems onboard, paying attention to the type of propulsion and decreasing the amount of fossil fuel burned are some of the main topics to be concerned about but there are many other factors to keep in mind. Among these, the behaviour of the Owners is also fundamental, such as making sure to navigate away from the coast, avoiding anchoring where there is seabed of particular value or avoiding unloading solid or liquid waste into the water. The topic is certainly felt but there is still awareness to be acquired. This is why it is important to promote dialogue on these issues; I commit myself on a personal level also because I live in Venice, a reality that is really exposed to this problem.

CRN Vioce exterior

The expertise of the CRN, vast experience in building custom yachts and dedication to every detail, is clearly visible on the yacht Voice, about which the shipyard based in Ancona was happy to tell us something more

Voice has a special color applied, whose wish was it and how did you select the exact tone? These dark, personalised, colours of the hull are a precise custom request: the Owner wanted to replicate the colours of one of his favourite cars. The CRN yacht project management dedicated team obtained fully-custom colours with a smokey quartz hull, silver sand superstructure and jet black details with a final striking result of changing colours depending on light reflections.

This yacht is the first yacht from CRN to be IMO Tier III compliant, what did this mean for project and design? Voice obtained IMO Tier III compliancy in early 2020 and will be followed by the other fully custom CRN yachts currently under construction. IMO Tier III requirements have been very important for the prevention of air pollution; the compliancy with the regulatory standards guarantees a certified reduction of 70% in harmful emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) in engine exhaust gases. The project was coordinated and completed by CRN’s technical office engineering team with the installation of the SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system that works by injecting urea in the exhaust system reducing the formation of NOx.

The modifications for the SCR implementation have affected the design of the Engine Rooms; the goal was to install the catalyst without taking anything away from the Owner’s living space. To achieve this result, the Engineering team focused on an extreme optimisation of the machinery layout and piping coordination (tubes, ducts, cable routing, etc.), which had to remain functional and accessible

As this yacht is built in Italy, did you use Italian craftmanship while shaping her? Italian craftsmanship played a crucial role in the creation of Voice and of course in the realization of all our bespoke yachts. At CRN we are proud to have an in-house select group of elite craftspeople: master shipwrights, welders, engine mechanics, electricians, production mechanics, instrument mechanics, joiners, carpenters, cabinetmakers, painters, plasterers, marble-workers, upholsterers, decorators, who, with their know-how, are always primed to provide bespoke solutions.

CRN also boasts an in-house carpentry, Zago (company part of Ferretti Group ) with over 110 years of history behind it and more than half a century of master cabinets makers know-how. These master craftspeople are a specialist all-Italian resource and their contribution brings a superlative level of minutely detailed customisation. CRN works also in collaboration with small and medium-sized enterprises. These excellent specialists and local Italian craftspeople underpin our long-term production continuity, working with total professionalism and flexibility.

Inside the shocking Sicily yacht tragedy that left 7 people dead

There was a violent storm, but even then, luxury yachts are built to weather such events. so why did this boat sink off the coast of sicily, leaving seven people dead, by natalie finn | e news • published august 24, 2024 • updated on august 24, 2024 at 7:34 am.

But what was supposed to be a routine pleasure cruise aboard a superyacht turned deadly all the same on the morning of Aug. 19 when the 184-foot Bayesian got caught in a storm and sank off the coast of Sicily .

"I can't remember the last time I read about a vessel going down quickly like that," Stephen Richter of SAR Marine Consulting told NBC News . "You know, completely capsizing and going down that quickly, a vessel of that nature, a yacht of that size."

Of the 22 people onboard, including crew, seven people died. The last of the bodies was recovered Aug. 23, an expectedly sad coda to what had already been a tragic week as the search for answers as to how this happened got underway.

And to be sure, every minute of the Bayesian's ill-fated outing is being fiercely scrutinized, starting with the general seaworthiness of the vessel itself.

Because, frankly, this was a freak occurrence.

Captain of yacht that sank off Sicily faces manslaughter investigation, Italian media say

"Boats of this size, they’re taking passengers on an excursion or a holiday," Richter explained. "They are not going to put them in situations where it may be dangerous or it may be uncomfortable, so this storm that popped up was obviously an anomaly. These vessels that carry passengers, they’re typically very well-maintained, very well-appointed."

But in this case, a $40 million yacht sank, seven people are dead—including a billionaire tech mogul and his 18-year-old daughter—and morbid fascination doesn't need a second wind.

Here is how the story of the Sicily yacht tragedy has unfolded so far:

What happened to the yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily?

The Bayesian had set off from the Sicilian port of Milazzo on Aug. 14 at capacity with 12 guests and 10 crewmembers aboard.

The aluminum-hulled vessel was built in 2008 by Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi and registered in the U.K. Cruise sites listed it as available for charter at $215,000 per week, per the Associated Press.

On the morning of Aug. 19, the superyacht was anchored off the coast of Porticello, a small fishing village in the Sicilian province of Palermo (also the name of Sicily's capital city), when a violent storm hit.

The vessel "suddenly sank" at around 5 a.m. local time, seemingly due to "the terrible weather conditions," the City Council of Bagheria announced shortly afterward, per NBC News .

At the time, only one person was confirmed dead—the ship's chef—but six others were said to be missing. The 15 survivors—who managed to make it onto an inflatable life boat, according to emergency officials—were rescued that morning by the crew of another yacht that had been nearby when the storm hit.

"Fifteen people inside," Karsten Borner, the Dutch captain of the ship that was able to help (the Sir Robert Baden Powell), told reporters afterward, per Reuters. "Four people were injured, three heavily injured, and we brought them to our ship. Then we communicated with the coast guard, and after some time, the coast guard came and later picked up injured people."

When the storm hit, his boat ran into "a strong hurricane gust," Borner said, "and we had to start the engine to keep the ship in an angled position."

They "managed to keep the ship in position," he continued, but once the storm died down, they realized the other boat that had been behind them—the Bayesian—was gone.

The wreck ended up settling 165 feet below the surface, according to Italy's national fire department.

Fire officials said that divers, a motorboat and a helicopter were deployed to search for the missing.

Meanwhile, footage was captured of the ship capsizing on closed-circuit TV about a half-mile away from where it was anchored.

In the video obtained by NBC News, the illuminated 250-foot aluminum mast of the ship appears to list severely to one side before disappearing completely. Survivors recalled having just a few minutes to literally abandon ship.

Who were the seven people who died when the yacht Bayesian sank?

The tragedy initially became headline news because billionaire tech mogul Mike Lynch—"Britain's Bill Gates," some U.K. media called him—was among the missing. His body was ultimately recovered Aug. 22 .

"They told me that suddenly they found themselves catapulted into the water without even understanding how they had got there," Dr. Fabio Genco, head of the Palermo Emergency Medical Services, told NBC News Aug. 22. "And that the whole thing seems to have lasted from 3 to 5 minutes."

Genco said he got to Porticello about an hour after the Bayesian capsized.

Survivors "told me that it was all dark, that the yacht hoisted itself up and then went down," he said. "All the objects were falling on them. That’s why I immediately made sure, by asking them questions, if they had any internal injuries."

Why did the yacht sink?

Italian prosecutors are investigating to determine what transpired before the boat went down, according to NBC News.

Meanwhile, the CEO of shipbuilder Perini's parent company The Italian Sea Group defended the vessel itself as "unsinkable."

Perini boats "are the safest in the most absolute sense," Giovanni Costantino told Sky News Aug. 22 . What happened to the Bayesian "put me in a state of sadness on one side and of disbelief on the other," he continued. "This incident sounds like an unbelievable story, both technically and as a fact."

Costantino said it had to have been human error that led to the boat sinking, declaring, "Mistakes were made."

"Everything that was done reveals a very long summation of errors," he told newspaper Corriere della Sera Aug. 21, in an interview translated from Italian. "The people should not have been in the cabins, the boat should not have been at anchor."

The weather was "all predictable," he continued, adding that the storm "was fully legible in all the weather charts. It couldn't have been ignored."

The yacht's captain, identified as James Cutfield of New Zealand, was taken to Termini Imerese hospital for treatment. From there, he told La Repubblica, per Sky News , that he didn't see the storm coming.

Borner, the captain of the ship that rescued the 15 Bayesian survivors, told NBC News that he noticed the storm come in at 4 a.m. local time, and saw what looked to him like a waterspout, a type of tornado that forms above water.

The International Centre for Waterspout Research posted on X Aug. 19 that it had "confirmed 18 waterspouts today off the coasts of Italy. Some were powerful waterspouts, one of which may have been responsible for the sinking of a large yacht off of Sicily."

Borner said he didn't know why the Bayesian sank so quickly, guessing "it may have something to do with the mast, which was incredibly long." (A tall mast, even with its sails down, means there's more surface area exposed to wind, which can result in tipping.)

Confirming that one person was dead and six unaccounted for immediately following the wreck on Aug. 19, Salvo Cocina of Sicily's civil protection agency told reporters that a waterspout had struck the area overnight.

"They were in the wrong place at the wrong time," he said.

The 59-year-old founder of software firm Autonomy had been on the trip with his wife Angela Bacares and their 18-year-old, Oxford-bound daughter Hannah to celebrate his recent acquittal in the U.S. on fraud and conspiracy charges stemming from the $11.7 billion purchase of his company by Hewlett-Packard in 2011.

In a bizarre turn of events, Lynch's co-defendant at trial, Stephen Chamberlain, the former vice president of finance at Autonomy, died after being taken off life support following a road accident on Aug. 17. Chamberlain's attorney told Reuters Aug. 20 that his friend and client had been out for a run when he was "fatally struck" by a car.

Meanwhile, multiple people who contributed to Lynch's defense were on the cruise with him and his family.

The bodies of Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer—who testified on Lynch's behalf—and his wife Judy Bloomer, as well as lawyer Chris Morvillo, a partner at the U.S. firm Clifford Chance, and his wife Neda Morvillo, a jewelry designer, were recovered on Aug. 21 .

In a LinkedIn post thanking the team that successfully defended Lynch, Morvillo wrote, per Sky News , "And, finally, a huge thank you to my patient and incredible wife, Neda Morvillo, and my two strong, brilliant, and beautiful daughters, Sabrina Morvillo and Sophia Morvillo. None of this would have been possible without your love and support. I am so glad to be home. And they all lived happily ever after…"

The first casualty confirmed Aug. 19 was the ship's Canadian-Antiguan chef, later identified as Recaldo Thomas.

"He was a one-of-a-kind special human being," a friend of Thomas told The Independent . "Incredibly talented, contagious smile and laugh, an incredible voice with a deep love of the ocean and the moon. I spoke to him nearly every day. He loved his life his friends and his job."

Hannah's body was the last of the missing six to be found , with divers bringing her remains ashore on Aug. 23.

Lynch and Bacares, who was rescued, also shared a 21-year-old daughter, according to The Times.

While awaiting trial, Lynch—who maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings—had spent 13 months under house arrest in San Francisco. Back home in London afterward, he admitted to The Times in July that he'd been afraid of dying in prison if he'd been found guilty. (He faced a possible 25-year sentence.)

"It's bizarre, but now you have a second life," he reflected. "The question is, what do you want to do with it?"

Mike Lynch yacht sinking latest: Manslaughter probe to look at crew responsibility as tributes paid to Hannah

LIVE – Updated at 11:23

A manslaughter investigation has been launched following the deaths of  seven people onboard the Bayesian  superyacht  which sank off the coast of  Sicily .

Italian public prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio, from nearby town Termini Imerese, said his office h as opened an initial investigation into manslaughter and negligent  shipwreck . No specific suspects have been named, so far.

At a press conference, prosecutors were asked about the Bayesian crew’s responsibilities considering all but one survived.

Prosecutors said they were “concentrating on this particular aspect”.

They want to “discover how much they knew and to what extent all the people [passengers] were warned”.

It comes as tributes have poured in for Hannah Lynch, who  died with her father on the superyacht .

Sasha Murray, chief stewardess of the Bayesian who is understood to have been rescued from the yacht described Hannah as a “diamond in a sea of stars”.

“What most people may not have seen was the extraordinarily strong, deep and loving relationship she shared with her parents, whom she adored more than anything,” she added.

Morgan Stanley chairman Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judith Bloomer, Clifford Chance lawyer Christopher Morvillo and his wife Neda Morvillo also died on the boat.

Prosecutor says likely Bayesian victims tried to escape sinking superyacht

  • A manslaughter investigation has been opened into the deaths
  • Key takeaways from the press conference
  • Five bodies were found in same cabin, prosecution says

A diver who searched the wreck of the Bayesian for missing passengers has spoken of his team’s strong emotional reaction to recovering the body of Hannah Lynch during the complex operation.

“Finding bodies underwater is our job, you get used to it and keep your emotions under control, but locating the girl was different — it was an emotional moment because she was so young,” Fabio Paoletti, a member of the Italian firefighters’ diving team told The Sunday Times .

He added: “We got into a large room, but I couldn’t say how large because I couldn’t see the walls. That led to a staircase down to a narrow corridor linking to the cabins.

“Entering the Bayesian we needed to check for any obstacles that could impede our exit, which was crucial since you had such little time to get out.

“That means looking for a door or lid that could swing open or a curtain that could get in your way. You clear the path.”

Tributes to a ‘brave’ and ‘selfless’ friend who died on Bayesian

Friends of Recaldo “Rick” Thomas have paid tribute to their ‘brave’ and ‘selfless’ friend who was found in the water near the superyacht Bayesian.

“Rick could have jumped off and survived, I have no doubt about that. But he wouldn’t have left people on board and just swum away,” his friend Gareth Williams told The Sunday Times .

“I read that the first mate was quite young, Rick would have said to him, ‘Get off the boat, man, I am here, I got this.’ That’s just who he was.”

He added: “He had this infectious smile and a sultry, baritone voice. He was the type of person you could sit in a room with — no TV, no music playing, and just be. You didn’t have to say a word. You just enjoy his company.”

Tribute to ‘genius’ storyteller Mike Lynch

Susannah Gurdun, a close family friend of the Lynch’s from Suffolk, shared a series of heartfelt stories about Mike Lynch and who he was beyond being one of Britain’s biggest tech moguls.

Ms Gurdun told of his “thrilling ability” to explain difficult and complicated concepts in a way people could easily understand.

His wife, Angela Bacares, and his daughters were telling Ms Gurdun of his ability to “conjure beautiful stories out of thin air”.

The following evening, Mr Lynch told a story as the dinner plates were cleared about a hero, who was the same age as Ms Gurdun’s son, embarking on adventures in search of treasure. She called it “magical”.

She added that she was not surprised to learn that Hannah had begun showing “serious literary promise”.

It is probable offences were committed, prosecutor says

Public prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio said he thought it was “probable that offences were committed” surrounding the sinking of the yacht.

He told reporters that the sinking could have been the responsibility of the captain, crew, individuals in charge of supervision, the ship-builder, or others.

He added: “We will establish each element’s responsibility – that will be done by the inquiry, so we can’t do that prematurely.

“For me, it is probable that offences were committed – that it could be a case of manslaughter – but we can only establish that if you give us the time to investigate.

“Media timing is completely different from that of a prosecutor. We need a minimum amount of time to come to a proper scientific conclusion.”

Recap: post-mortem examinations yet to be carried out

No information has yet been gleaned from an examination of the seven people who died, the prosecutor of the case has said.

In response to a question about whether post-mortem examinations have been carried out, Raffaele Cammarano told a press conference in Italy: “There are a whole number of preliminary stages to go through before the autopsies.”

The yacht had been hit by a downburst and the the Italian officials said they would be looking at how it could affect one vehicle and not other nearby vessels, according to the translation of the conference.

The inquiry is currently an Italian affair with local involvement, but chief prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio said: “I cannot tell you with any certainty that the inquiry will be exclusively Italian.”

He added: “There will be developments, I’m sure, on that score.”

Full report: Manslaughter investigation launched after Mike Lynch’s Bayesian superyacht sinks

Italian public prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio, from nearby town Termini Imerese, said his office has opened an initial investigation into manslaughter and negligent  shipwreck . No specific suspects have been named, so far.

Hannah was ‘a diamond in a sea of stars’ who vowed to save her parents

The daughter of tech tycoon Mike Lynch, who  died with her father  on the luxury superyacht Bayesian, has been described as a “diamond in a sea of stars” by a survivor from the tragedy.

Sasha Murray, chief stewardess of the Bayesian who is understood to have been rescued from the yacht, said: “Those who knew her will know that Hannah was a diamond in a sea of stars. Bright, beautiful and always shining.

“What most people may not have seen was the extraordinarily strong, deep and loving relationship she shared with her parents, whom she adored more than anything.

“While swimming with them she often said, if anything ever happened she would save them.

“I have no doubt that the  Irish , Latina fire that burns in her soul kept that spirited determination alive.”

What is a 'downburst'?

Officials said the superyacht had been hit by a downburst and the Italian officials said they would be looking at how it could affect one vehicle and not other nearby vessels, according to the translation of the conference.

A downburst is an intense burst of wind at ground level emenating from the strong downdraft of a thunderstorm; the wind often blows radially from a point source, as opposed to the rotating winds associated with a tornado.

Downbursts usually last just a few minutes, and can be particularly dangerous for aviation.

They have been blamed for a number of air crashes over the years, although the risk tends to be well forecast by meteorologists allowing pilots to avoid them.

Recap: Prosecutor demands time to assess whether manslaughter charges can be brought

Ambrogio Cartosio, chief prosecutor of Termini Imeres, told a press conference he thought it was “probable that offences were committed” over the seven deaths during the sinking of the Bayesian.

He said officials the will examine whether the captain, crew, individuals in charge of supervision, the ship-builder, or others could bear responsibility over the deaths.

“We will establish each element’s responsibility - that will be done by the inquiry, so we can’t do that prematurely.

“For me, it is probable that offences were committed - that it could be a case of manslaughter - but we can only establish that if you give us the time to investigate.”

Experts say recovery of Bayesian could take two months

Raffaele Macauda, deputy commander of the Palermo coastguard, told the media it was “difficult” getting into the yacht’s cabins and it required “very lengthy periods to remove obstacles” through them.

Mr Macauda said the coastguard is conducting in-depth environmental monitoring.

He adds that the owner of the Bayesian has expressed an interest in recovering the vessel from the sea floor, but the timing of this was uncertain.

Some experts have estimated it could take eight weeks to recover the yacht.

Next step: Pulling the Bayesian out of the sea ‘complex and costly'

The sinking has puzzled naval marine experts who say a boat like the Bayesian, built by Italian high-end yacht manufacturer Perini, should have withstood the storm and in any case should not have sunk as quickly as it did.

Pulling the Bayesian out of the sea will help investigators determine what happened, but the operation is likely to be complex and costly. The wreck is lying apparently intact on its side at a depth of 50 metres (164 feet).“It’s in the interests of the owners and managers of the ship to salvage it,” Cartosio said, adding “they have assured their full cooperation”.

Giovanni Costantino , CEO of The Italian Sea Group which owns Perini, told Reuters this week the shipwreck was the result of a string of “indescribable, unreasonable errors” made by the crew, and ruled out any design or construction failings.

No tornado alert before sinking - coastguard say

Raffaele Macauda, deputy commander of the Palermo coastguard, said there was no alert of a tornado at the time of the sinking on Monday morning.

Mr Macauda told a press conference: “Given that the conditions were such, there wasn’t anything to suggest there could be an extreme situation arising.

“There are vessels that can monitor, after all, these events and one would have thought that the captain had taken precautions.”

Deputy Prosecutor Raffaele Cammarano told journalists the Italian Air Force had confirmed the sinking was most likely caused by a downburst which are powerful winds that descend from a thunderstorm and spread out quickly once they hit the ground.

Officials will look into the safety equipment on the sunken vessel.

Mr Cammarano was asked about whether there is a black box and if the hatches were left open.

He said investigators do not have exact information about the black box and that the first phase of the inquiry will look into it.

Captain and other survivors questioned after Bayesian tragedy

The captain James Cutfield and the other survivors have been questioned this week by authorities. None of them have commented publicly on how the ship went down.

Raffaele Cammarano, another prosecutor speaking at the same news conference, said that when authorities questioned Cutfield he had been “extremely cooperative”.

Lynch’s pay tribute to father and daughter lost on Bayesian

Hannah Lynch’s sister Esme described her as “the most amazing, supportive and joyful sister”.

Paying tribute, she said: “Hannah often burst into my bedroom and lay down with me. Sometimes beaming with a smile, sometimes cheeky, sometimes for advice. No matter what, she brought boundless love to me.

“She was endlessly caring, passionately mad, unintentionally hilarious and the most amazing, supportive and joyful sister and best friend to me.

“And on top of all this, she had even more love to give endlessly to all her friends, and passion to give to her incredible studies and goals.

“She is my little angel, my star.”

A spokesperson for the Lynch family said: “The Lynch family is devastated, in shock and is being comforted and supported by family and friends.

“Their thoughts are with everyone affected by the tragedy.

“They would like to sincerely thank the Italian coastguard, emergency services and all those who helped in the rescue.

“Their one request now is that their privacy be respected at this time of unspeakable grief.”

Diver describes tragic conditions aboard the Bayesian wreck

A diver described the emotional moment the final body was pulled from the wreckage of the Bayesian when they all stopped to applaud as Hannah Lynch made it to shore.

Inspector Vincenzo Nardoni, a diver drafted in from the fire brigade’s unit in Naples, said: “It was an emotional liberation, a relief of stress.

“Because stress is our daily bread. We work on call and in emergencies, and we intervene immediately. So stress is our baggage, is what we bring with us.”

He added “We had to revise the scene from a different angle from the way we’d normally see it, and that made everything more difficult.’

“We entered the confined spaces, having already performed evaluations on the safe point to enter inside the yacht. We found the safest spot and got inside from there.

“But inside it was a very confusing place, with wardrobes and furniture whirling all around us, and lots of mirrors reflecting back our lights at us.

“The bodies were all wedged in tight spots, with furniture on top or beside them. They were all stuck there.”

Recap: Bayesian crew allowed to leave Sicily

Chief prosecutor of Termini Imerese, Ambrogio Cartosio, said his office has opened an initial investigation into manslaughter and negligent shipwreck at a press conference.

Asked whether the crew will remain in Sicily, Mr Cartosio said: “There’s no obligation, but they should be available for the investigation.”

Authroties still have questions to ask the captain but that they cannot keep people in the country under Italian law.

Raffaele Cammarano added his officials were going to give the crew alcohol and drug testing.

He stressed no individuals were yet under investigation.

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch was among seven people who died after the luxury superyacht Bayesian sank off the coast of Sicily early on Monday morning

The 59-year-old is known for founding Invoke Capital and Autonomy Corporation and had been in the headlines after he was cleared of charges in a high-profile fraud case.

But how did the “British Bill Gates” earn his fortune?

Final moments of Bayesian victims revealed

The final moments of the remaining victims of the Bayesian disaster have been revealed in a press conference earlier today.

Local prosecutor Raffaele Cammarano said the meteorological event that hit the vessel was most likely a “downburst”, a very strong downward wind that is an intense but relatively frequent event at sea, rather than a water spout which involves rotating winds like a whirlwind or tornado.

He said that the passengers were all probably asleep at the time of the storm which was why they failed to escape.

Bentivoglio Fiandra, chief of Palermo’s fire brigade and part of the divers’ rescue team, explained that the Bayesian sank stern-first and then rolled onto its right side.

“As a result, the victims sought refuge on the left side of the boat, where the last air pockets remained as the vessel was sinking,” he said.

The divers found five bodies in the first cabin on the left and one, Hannah Lynch’s, in the third cabin on the left.

Inspector Vincenzo Nardoni, a diver drafted in from the fire brigade’s unit in Naples: “The bodies were all wedged in tight spots, with furniture on top or beside them. They were all stuck there.”

According to the Telegraph, Raffaele Cammarano, one of two prosecutors leading the case, told a press conference earlier: “There can be no certainty about the behaviour of the passengers on board, at the moment.

“It is probable they tried to escape but we have no real details about that, that will emerge in the course of the inquiry.”

A manslaughter investigation has been launched following the death of seven people onboard the Bayesian superyacht which sank off the coast of Sicily .

Italian public prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio, from nearby town Termini Imerese, said his office has opened an initial investigation into manslaughter and negligent shipwreck . No specific suspects have been named.

British technology entrepreneur Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah were among those who died after the yacht sank near Porticello around 5am local time on Monday.

My colleague Jabed Ahmed reports:

The following evening, Mr Lynch told a story as the dinner plates were cleared about a hero, who was the same age as Ms Gurdun’s son, embarking on adventures in search of treasure.

She called it “magical”.

“It is beyond tragic that we will never know where her own particular brilliance might have led… but I still feel blessed to have shared that time with them in Spain,” she said.

“Not just because I witnessed Mike’s incredible storytelling; but because I was given a chance of understanding what that moment said about all four of them as a united vibrant loving family.

“To those of us who knew him in that way, this family achievement – in partnership with Angela – was every bit as special and beautiful as the ones he pulled off in the world of tech and science.

“Perhaps even more so – in that he did it all simultaneously.

“He was an extraordinary human being and it was – truly – a privilege to have known him.”

Tragic Hannah said she would save parents if they ever got in trouble swimming

The chief stewardess of the tragic Beysian superyacht, has paid tribute to Hannah Lynch, 18, after her body was recovered from the wreck.

Sasha Murray, released a statement, saying: “Those who knew her will know that Hannah was a diamond in a sea of stars. Bright, beautiful and always shining.

“While swimming with them she often said, if anything ever happened she would save them. I have no doubt that the Irish, Latina fire that burns in her soul kept that spirited determination alive.”

Timeline of the Bayesian luxury yacht disaster in Sicily: Monday 19 - Wednesday 21 August

Monday 19 August

The Bayesian yacht, flying a British flag, sinks at around 5am local time when the area was hit by a tornado.

Fifteen people are rescued from the 55m (180ft) vessel – including a mother and baby – but another seven remain missing.

A body, believed to be that of a chef on the boat, is later found near the wreck.

Tuesday 20 August

The search continues for the six tourists missing.

It is reported that among those missing are Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer; his wife, Judy Bloomer; Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo; and his wife, Neda Morvillo.

Police divers try to reach the hull of the ship, resting at a depth of 50 metres.

Italy’s fire brigade Vigili del Fuoco say early inspections of the wreck were “unsuccessful” because of limited access to the bridge and furniture obstructing passages.

Wednesday 21 August

The search for the six people unaccounted for enters a third day, with crews carrying out inspections of the yacht’s internal hull.

A team of four British inspectors from the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) arrive in Porticello to look at the site of the sinking.

Five bodies are found inside the yacht on Wednesday afternoon. Only four of them are brought to shore.

Body bags are seen being taken to the port of Porticello in the afternoon where dozens of emergency services staff wait.

  • How long will it take to recover the sailing vessel?

Mr Macauda could not confirm how long it would take to retrieve the shipwreck of the sunken yacht.

“Everything depends on the availability of the owners and the timeframe of the retrieval of the wreck and of course all that has to be submitted to the port authorities and in parallel of course there will be the inquiry results and it’s only really then that we will be able to authorise the operation,” he said, according to a BBC translation.

“I can’t say, like some experts who have already spoken on the subject, that it will be eight weeks.”

He made clear that the owners will bear the full cost of retrieval, although he could not estimate the figure.

  • Why were nearby vessels not similarly affected?

Another yacht, the Sir Robert BP, was about 150 to 200 metres from the Bayesian when extreme weather hit.

Its crew helped to rescue 15 people from the stricken vessel.

Italian officials said they would be looking at how the downburst could affect one vehicle and not other nearby vessels.

  • Why did the boat sink?

The vessel had been deemed “unsinkable” by its manufacturer – Italian shipyard Perini Navi.

The Bayesian was hit by a downburst, according to Mr Cammarano, which are powerful winds that descend from a thunderstorm and spread out quickly once they hit the ground.

  • Why were several of the passengers in one cabin?

The press conference heard several bodies onboard the sunken yacht were found in a single cabin which was not theirs.

Mr Cammarano said investigators currently do not know the reason for them being discovered in the same cabin.

The chief of the Palermo fire service, Bentivoglio Fiandra, said the yacht pinned to the right and suggested people tried to go on the other side, taking refuge in cabins in the higher part of the wreck.

  • Why weren’t passengers who remained on board the vessel warned about escaping from the yacht?

The prosecutor in charge of the case, Raffaele Cammarano, suggested that some passengers may have been asleep when others were awake.

Asked why they were not woken up or alerted, he said that is something investigators are trying to work out from the statements of the survivors.

He called it an “essential” part of the inquiry.

  • What weather warnings was the Bayesian alerted to?

Passengers were asleep and therefore unable to escape, prosecutors say

The passengers who died were probably asleep, prosecutors said, and this is the reason they failed to escape.

Raffaele Cammarano, the prosecutor of the case, suggested “they were asleep whereas the others weren’t”.

He was asked if there was anyone at the time available to alert them.

Mr Cammarano said: “That is precisely what we are trying to ascertain from the statements made during the interrogation of the survivors – an essential point in the inquiry obviously.”

Prosecutor says bayesian incident is a ‘very grave tragedy'.

A top prosecutor in Sicily outlined the order in which the bodies of six people who had been missing following the yacht sinking were retrieved, calling the incident a “very grave tragedy”.

Speaking at a press conference on Saturday, public prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio said: “These six persons who tried desperately to save themselves were finally retrieved.

“First of all, four of them. Jonathan Bloomer the banker, Christopher Morvillo the lawyer, and all four of them were retrieved from inside the yacht which was 50 metres down.

“Then, later, the other two were also retrieved.

“Michael Lynch on the 23rd, yesterday, and then the 18-year-old daughter of Michael Lynch, Hannah, was found yesterday morning.

“It is a very grave tragedy and in order to reduce the dimensions of the tragedy, we have called upon the co-operation of the firefighters, firefighting divers, who have shown incredible courage and skill, who carried out a very difficult mission indeed and have allowed us to inspect properly the wreck for bodies.”

ICYMI: Bodies were recovered from cabins on the left side of the yacht

The bodies of six people were recovered from cabins on the left side of the yacht after it had sunk, the chief of the Palermo fire service said.

Girolamo Bentivoglio said specialised divers attempting to retrieve the bodies had to deal with “very little visibility due to the weather conditions” and were called in from across the country as part of a search-and-rescue operation which involved “some 70 people” each day.

He added: “The yacht obviously pinned to the right and obviously the (people) tried to go on the other side and then took refuge in their cabins.

“We found four or five bodies in the cabin on the left and there was another one in the third cabin on the left too, and obviously they were in the higher part of the wreck.

“Obviously, emergency procedures were implemented by the divers and obviously we installed cameras and involved further divers.

“And we involved obviously helicopter services and other surveillance cameras.”

No autopsies have been carried out yet

It is ‘probable’ that offences were committed, prosecutor says, italian officials currently cannot say when the first distress signal was launched.

Maritime director of western Sicily Rear Admiral Raffaele Macauda, said: “It is normal when there is imminent danger to send distress signals – that is what alerted the port authorities to come to the scene.

“It may be that there was an error in manipulation given the speed of events and it meant that an emergency distress signal was not launched properly or at the right time.

“We can’t reconstruct all these details, I’m afraid at the moment.

“We can’t say exactly at what time the first distress signal was launched.”

He also said “the owners will bear the full cost of the retrieval” of the wreckage and could not estimate how much it would cost.

The passengers who died were probably asleep, prosecutors said, and this is the reason they failed to escape.

We have no idea why five bodies were found in same cabin, prosecution says

All of the bodies onboard the sunken yacht were found in a single cabin which “was not theirs”, a prosecutor told reporters.

Prosecutor Raffaele Cammarano said, through a translation provided by the BBC: “The bodies were found in a cabin which was not theirs but this doesn’t give us any kind of certainty about what happened.

“We have no idea of the reasons for their all being found in the same cabin.”
