Sailing the Hamptons: The Super Yacht Zefira Yours For $38,400,000

T.J. Clemente

It started out as a swim and sail on a hot afternoon last summer. As we motored out of Three Mile Harbor in East Hampton, my sailing buddy Todd Wickersham was itching to go for a swim sooner than later so we anchored off Sammy’s Beach right outside the harbor in Gardiner’s Bay. We both jumped into the soothing cool bay water, as my beagle Bo watched. Then almost at the same time we realized this huge yacht anchored a few hundred yards further out. Todd said, “Hey before we sail, I would love to get up close to that sailboat.” At that time we had no idea what we were looking at, but we do now.

It was the super yacht, “Zefira.” It was visiting the Hamptons. In 2011, Zefira was winner of the World Super Yacht awards for Best Sailing Yacht and Best Sailing Yacht 45+ meters, along with awards for best Nautical Design. The firms of Dubois, Fitzroy, and Tessier all had a hand in building this aluminum vessel. The overall Length is 163 ft., with the water line length being 146 ft. The main sail mast has 5 spreaders and I found out Zefira has a caterpillar diesel engine of 1400 horsepower and holds 9876 gallons of diesel fuel. When only under power its cruising speed is 13.5 knots with its maximum speed being 15 knots. In its two years competing in the great international yacht races it usually places in the top three. Zefira has one master cabin and three guest cabins with a recommended 10 guest maximum (L0L). It has a captain and three addition crew members. Around October 10, 2012 the owners of Zefira, Salvatore Trifiro and his wife Poala, put Zefira up for “sail.” The asking price $38,400,000. Mrs. Trifiro’ is reported to have once said, “We have always had a passion for sailing,” but her husband, a leading Italian lawyer who has owned nine previous Fitzroy yachts, has decided to move on to something new. F. Scott Fitzgerald once said, “Let me tell you about the very rich. They are different from you and me. They possess and enjoy early, and it does something to them, makes them soft where we are hard, and cynical where we are trustful, in a way that, unless you were born rich, it is very difficult to understand…They are different.” To wrap up this story properly it must have been some sight for those on board Zefira when my 40 yr. old 22’ Catalina was circling it taking pictures. Luckily nobody shot at us.

Fitzroy Yachts Zefira

The sea trial was pubblished on Superyacht 31 – spring 2012

Zefira S/Y is one of those few yachts that became an attraction for yacht enthusiasts and professionals  well before she hit the water.

This yacht was designed and built with the experience and passion for sailing boats her owners demonstrated from the start as well as a naval engineering and a project design team from  Ed Dubois studio for the exterior, while Remi Tessier was responsible for all the interiors. Zefira was built in a yard which enjoys a  worldwide  reputation for the construction of large sailing yachts.

fitzroy zefira

With such an opening introduction one can expect nothing less than something absolutely extraordinary, where the term used must be read in its best meaning to underscore something that has really nothing of the ordinary. We had the pleasure of talking with the owners who are currently sailing on their yacht after they had  carried out important work in the design phase with the project team to define specific guidelines and details.

Beyond the highly involving dialogue which ensued with flowing examples  of their own sailing experience and passion, we managed to grasp and better understand the idea behind the project which began with a seven metre sloop and  gradually developed in the course of the following 40 years  of which  many were spent at  sea. Putting words to emotion and feelings is never easy to do and  more so when they are other people’s. In this case however everything was a lot easier for us   thanks to our interviewee’s eloquent communicative capability.

The first point our attention was brought to was that Zefira is the largest sailing y

acht ever designed by Dubois with no fly bridge and built by Fitzroy Yachts in New Zealand.  This may strike our readers as a mere detail, but it is in fact one of the principal fundamentals outlining this project because it translates into flowing external lines and a unique profile when observed sideways on.

The choice  of doing without a fly bridge is somewhat unusual since up until  recently a “fly” had been widely accepted as  a run of the mill thing to have on a sailing yacht beyond a given size, but which nevertheless, Zefira is proud to do without giving cause for, among others ,  the following comment volunteered by some of the designers not involved in the project: “The world of sailing now stands  divided between before Zefira and after Zefira”.

Naturally enough this comment in particular is aimed at the yachts’ profile, which brings to a standstill what had become a consolidated practice on yachts this size. Aesthetics is principally  why the owners decided to do without the fly option as well as for practical reasons  they eloquently highlighted: without one  on a  50 metre sailing boat  there’s a complete total view of both what lies ahead up to the horizon and of the sail plan.

Moreover using a higher windswept and sun scorched horizontal plane rather than the main deck itself is by its very nature something destined to be exploited only sporadically and quite correctly in their opinion doesn’t justify having one.

The thought behind the whole project as the requests submitted to both designers and yard indicated,  were to enjoy a pure thorough bred for its performing lines and technical contents, capable of offering the sort of space and commodities expected when cruising extensively in all weather conditions. At a first glance the goal seems to have been easily achieved, but if  we then go into an in-depth analysis, the comments volunteered by project designers earlier seems surely appropriate. The husband and wife team (the owners) followed up on construction work from the initial stages to completion, working through the more important phases in close contact with the professional teams involved.

According to the owners the best part was witnessing the step by step progress of such an enterprise. We can understand the reasons why and genuinely  hope that in  the future such desire will generate the construction of other such extraordinary ships.

Several International prizes for design and technical contents have been awarded to Zefira. Dubois Naval Architects’ studio is proud of the recognitions bestowed since this is the largest sailing yacht project without a “fly” they’ve ever made so far and also for the passion and creativity expressed time and time again by the owners who incidentally had been the previous owners of another Dubois  project built by Alloy Yachts: Kokomo of London (now Nubero Blau). The challenge taken on by the studio was one that meant blending the huge experience acquired by the owners to innovative aesthetics, with a hull capable of delivering the sea-keeping qualities and performance requested.

The owners wished for a boat that could be another home from home: spacious, with a project design that looked ahead into the future. For this reason the design team was invited by the owners to pay them a visit and to take a look at their house to better understand what they wanted.

The choice of the yard was principally dictated by delivery times even if Fitzroy Yachts had been chosen also in function of preceding work carried out from Dubois projects.

Among some of the clever solutions highlighted by the owners in the course of our conversation we wish to mention the ease in steering they experienced and handling the yacht, of course aided by electronics and important data communication systems capable of monitoring and performing many of the required manoeuvres without hindering visibility.

The rig which is capable of carrying up to 3,000 square metres of canvass is per se a very interesting technical achievement inasmuch as it sports a 63.50 metre mast and can still be defined as being “light”. Obviously there’s a carbon fibre mast and boom, as well as fibre stays that have been purposely chosen to reduce weight high above the waterline which translates into less draught and better performance in breezes.

All of the choices adopted for Zefira mean she is very competitive on the race track even against racers and  in spite of the many commodities she carries with her.  As for the interiors and  much of the work put in by  Remi Tessier designer and the co-owner they enhanced an undoubted feeling of both tranquillity and elegance.

Gauged chromatic variety  meets the discerning eye as it takes in lighter and darker shades of handcrafted woodwork placed without ever causing excessive contrast, followed by polished steel elements and ad hoc lighting which enhances relaxation throughout every area. The space chosen to house each piece of furniture, is fruit of  careful study that has contributed into ensuring an uncompromised degree of comfort in the owners’ suite which is situated in the stern and in each of the three guest cabins as well.

One is a twin while the other two are double each one of them sports its own private bathroom. The crew quarters are situated in the bow area and with space for a lounge and crew mess room, which translates into staff’s quality living standards on board. The yacht’s convivial areas are also well distributed and large to ensure adequate privacy to guests and owners alike.

The electronics and navigation aids installed are the most modern on the market, with data and alarm control systems and displays in each of the two external command /control stations  as well as on the bridge deck as can be expected on a state of the art ship such as this. Dictated by reasons of space we have to limit our text to that which has so far been described even when the meeting with Zefira’s owners was so stimulating  we were prompted  to go further.

Since both of them  described Zefira as being a point of arrival but of departure too, we wish them to continue their research work in the yachting field and to offer us, who knows what other input and ideas in the future. For further information please contact: Angelo Colombo

Written by Mike Smith

The sailing superyacht Zefira, project or model name x50, has now been launched in June 2010 at New Plymouth, New Zealand, by the sailing yacht builder Fitzroy Yachts. It is understood that yacht Zefira, with her light grey hull, has further fine tuning and finishing to be completed by the award winning shipyard before she will be delivered to her owner.

Sailing Yacht Zefira after her launched by Fitzroy Yachts in New Zealand in June 2010 – Photo by Nigel Price

This first photo of Zefira was taken by the yacht photographer Nigel Price from North Head, Stanley Bay, Basset Lookout, North Shore City (Auckland, New Zealand). The yacht was in Auckland harbour yesterday (15.07.2010) and she can be seen here in the process of dropping the mainsail after a test sail sea trial.

The Fitzroy Yacht’s Zefira  was constructed for a key European client yacht owner who approached Fitzroy directly to build this very impressive 50 metre large flybridge sailing yacht. The Dubois designed 49.7m fast cruising sloop is an all aluminum constructed luxury yacht. The sloop is expected to deliver superior sailing performance with her powerful Southern Spars rig and her deep bulb keel.

Rodney Martin, the Fitzroy Yachts managing director has said that “This year there will be only five to 10 sailing super yachts launched in the world and I think this will be the most impressive and we expect it to win a number of awards with it next year”.

Earlier this month the New Zealand company began production on another similar sized superyacht, their first new build contract sinse the financial crisis. Mr Martin said the Zefira super yacht took around 300,000 man hours to construct and finish at a cost of more than $50 million.

S/Y Zefira is a large flybridge sailing yacht and is similar (although more sleek) than another recently launched Dubois designed sailing yacht called Twizzle , which is comparable in many ways. It will be very interesting to see how the two sailing yachts fair in the World Superyacht Awards as one was built in Europe by  Royal Huisman, new to Dubois, and the other an experienced Dubois yacht builder based in New Zealand. Both vessels have been designed and built to be exceptionally good sailing performers while also having reasonably sleek and low profiles. Whist Zefira is lower profile without a full flybridge, both sailing yachts offer very large and comfortable interior volume and are thus ideal for long range cruising.

Zefira is the largest vessel crafted by Fitzroy Yachts to date. The Dubois designed vessel was built to exceptional quality levels which continue the yards reputation for building award winning superyachts. Powered by a Caterpillar C32 1450 bhp main engine and a Hundested variable pitch propeller, the propulsion system provides long range motor sailing abilities. The 56 meter ‘light weight’ carbon fiber sailing rig was supplied by Southern Spars, and the sails inventory provided by North Sails.

The interior, styled and drawn by Remi Tessier , features a combination of bleached timbers and white leather which results in clean modern lines and provides bright comfortable living areas. Generous accommodation spaces are provided for the owners and guests all with private ensuite facilities and state of the art entertainment systems. The large main deck saloon opens to a covered cockpit area which features electrically retracting side windows. The very best in lighting and entertainment control systems was incorporated into the yacht by Liquid Automation, allowing the interior ambience to be seamlessly controlled at the touch of a button.

The stainless steel galley with black granite bench top is extremely spacious for a sailing yacht with its carefully planned layout and stylish Gaggenau and Sub Zero appliances. The forward crew area is built to match the guest cabins with similar styling and detail incorporated into the joinery. There are four crew cabins each with their own ensuite which can comfortably accommodate up to 8 crew.

Lunch with... superyacht owner Paola Trifirò

I've agreed to meet Paola Trifirò at her apartment for a coffee before we head out to lunch, and my plan is to meet the photographer outside so we can go in together. I've not reckoned on the efficiency of the doorman, however; he quickly pries out of me the reason for loitering on his pavement and phones up to announce my arrival.

Salvatore was already a sailor when Paola met him. 'He was passionate about boats, and I was passionate about him, and so [put] one passion with the other and I was passionate about boats!' she explains. 'He had a small boat, a dinghy, and it was on the lake, which is dangerous. So we bought a seven-metre boat from France, called Calife . A very strong boat, not too big. I had one burner (in the galley), but always had something hot I was always organised for fantastic food.' Good galleys have been a feature of the Trifiròs' boats ever since vital for such a famously passionate cook.

They cruised as far as Capri and Corsica in this boat, while Paola learned both sailing and astro-navigation. They kept it for about three years, until 1973, before feeling it was time to upgrade. They briefly replaced _Calife _with a Swedish-built 8.5-metre yacht, before settling on something a little bigger, at 11.5 metres. The couple kept her in Saint-Tropez, France, and drove the 250 miles there and back every weekend to cruise her along the French coast. The next step up was a 14m Dufour yacht bought in 1978; the pattern of buying something a little bigger every few years had been established.

The Trifiròs were committed cruising sailors and the Dufour significantly extended their range. This time they ventured much further afield, visiting Tunisia and North Africa. A Jongert was next, found with the help of Herbert Dahm. 'It was called Black Shark ; the name was not mine, but it looked like a hotel, like a first class hotel,' says Trifirò. 'But there were problems. The beds were positioned in a stupid way, so we [only] kept it a couple of years.'

At this point the Trifiròs had their first real brush with boat building. 'We were enthusiastic to have an old Italian boat, a masterpiece, and so we started looking,' recalls Trifirò. They found what they wanted in Val III , originally built by Cantieri di Pisa at their Cantieri Navale Italiano yard in Porta a Mare on the Navicelli channel. The yard only built sailboats for a few short years from 1957, and the 21m ketch was the last it produced, in 1966.

When the Trifiròs bought her they called her Kalea , and embarked on an ambitious renovation. Paola had the opportunity to exercise her design outlook. The exterior was rebuilt as original, but the interior was given a modern look with mahogany finish, red leather, a small library, a proper galley and even a dishwasher.

'It took one and a half years, very, very intense. The quality of artisan in Cantiere Valdettaro was superb,' she remembers. In Kalea , their cruising reach moved out again to include the Greek Islands, North Africa and Turkey. The Trifiròs kept Kalea for about four years, and were very pleased to see her again recently. 'And still the boat is superb. We were on board Rrose Selavy with the Commodore, sailing around Porto Cervo last year and we saw Kalea. It was like an apparition we had a look and I was so happy and so surprised, it was perfect.'

Paola would have liked to keep her for longer, but in 1990 the couple had their heads turned by a Jongert available at a particularly good price, a 26m boat called Happy Taurus II . 'It [had] a super kitchen; you can't imagine how beautiful the kitchen was, like a professional one. And with this boat we did a lot of things, it was a splendid boat, very tough. So strong, all steel.' The motivation was once again to extend their cruising range, and this time they hoped to reach their ultimate goal of sailing around the world.

The Trifiròs cruised north with Happy Taurus II, across the Bay of Biscay to Normandy, before crossing the English Channel to Southampton and heading west along the south coast, before taking in Wales and Ireland. 'Beautiful country, the south of England, and we didn't eat any longer ham or chicken, just clotted cream. Everyday. This was a fantastic holiday,' she says with a laugh. They took Happy Taurus II up the Thames to St Katherine's Dock, to Norway and Sweden, and across the Atlantic to the Caribbean and then up the east coast of the US to New York and New England.

_Zefira _was built by Fitzroy Yachts in New Zealand; she's a 49.7m fast-cruising sloop and the largest Dubois Naval Architects had designed without a flybridge. It started cutting aluminium in early 2009 and Salvatore visited just once, six months later. Paola was there regularly.

The Trifiròs have also raced Zefira at the Caribbean Superyacht Regatta and Rendezvous, Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta and the Dubois Cup. Everywhere, the boat has turned heads and garnered admiring reviews. And having created such a beautiful, fêted boat, it is surprising to learn the Trifiròs are already considering replacing her; but then, change is the pattern of their yacht ownership.

Trifirò explains her philosophy: 'If you have a splendid house, a beautiful house, you don't think about changing; but even with a beautiful boat, there are things you could do in a new, different way. This is the dream.' The world's economic circumstances may be against it, however. 'The general situation is difficult, there are problems and risks. We must clarify our ideas. Everybody has ideas, but at the moment the final result is just the splendid dream of a new, mysterious creature.'

As I prepare to leave, I can't help but think that the evidence Paola Trifirò still has a powerful urge to design and create is all around me. And somehow, I doubt a little thing like the global financial crisis will stop her finding an outlet for that ambition. We'll have to wait and see whether or not that means another superyacht.
