How much does it cost to charter a yacht?

There are many things to consider and first time charterers can be left confused, that's why we've created a comprehensive guide to yacht charter prices (with a checklist).

The good news: It’s easy to grasp the basics of yacht charter pricing. And with one of our experts in your corner, we can help you more accurately estimate the cost of your next once-in-a-lifetime vacation.

The cost of a yacht charter is dependent on a number of factors, including the type of yacht, the charter destination, local taxes, and the base cost. (If the yacht has a celebrity owner, well that too, can add to the cost.)

Therefore, yacht charters have a wide range of base prices. That’s why charters can cost from $10,000 per week on smaller sailing yachts and catamarans, up to $150,000+ per week on the most luxurious motor superyachts.

Yacht Charter Price Structure: “All-Inclusive” vs “Plus Expenses”

In the world of yachting, two types of crewed yacht charters are available to you – “All-Inclusive” and “Plus Expenses” charter experiences. What do these terms mean exactly? Here’s a quick look:

• All-Inclusive Yacht Charters – Some charters (mainly catamaran and monohull charters in the Virgin Islands) offer all-inclusive rates. That means rates are based on the number of guests, and they include all food and drink, water sports, and fuel costs. Dockage and taxes, though, are usually charged separately.
• Plus Expenses Charters – Rates for larger motor yachts do not include running expenses, which must be paid separately. For these luxury charters, the base price is for the yacht only. Additional expenses, i.e. food, bar, fuel, dockage, port taxes, and other expenses, are charged separately. Most frequently, the running expenses are paid by an Advance Provisioning Allowance, or APA, which is typically 35% of the base price; this is an amount that’s paid prior to the charter.

What can you expect to pay for a catamaran, a sailing vessel, or motored yacht? Here’s a quick overview of the average cost to rent a yacht (not including extra expenses) for the most common types available:

Factors that Affect Yacht Charter Prices

Since charter yachts are privately owned, prices are set by the owner. This can explain, in part, the wide range of differences in price between boats of similar lengths. Yet, several other factors can significantly impact price, including:

• The Yacht – The year the boat was built, the builder, previous owners, and the boat’s selection of water toys can also increase the cost of a yacht. Boats can also develop a reputation, i.e. the largest or most luxurious, or having a famous builder or previous owner. Reputation can also affect pricing.
• Season – Prices typically increase in the high season – i.e. high summer in the Mediterranean or winter in the Caribbean – and decrease in low seasons.
• Destination – Your charter destination also plays a role in charter cost. For example, prices increase in areas without large charter fleets (i.e. the Galapagos), whereas Bahamas yacht charters,   BVI charters , or Mediterranean yacht charter are priced more competitively.

Additional Costs Considerations on Yacht Charter

In addition to the cost associated with running the yacht and provisioning, there are a number of other costs that must be considered. These are the most significant:

Advanced Provisioning Allowance

The APA on Plus Expenses charters equals roughly 35% of the yacht’s base price. This is a fee that’s collected prior to charter, and it’s similar to an expense account the captain can access during the charter. At the end of the charter, you will receive a detailed accounting of your APA account, plus any unused APA funds in cash.

In the case of overages, you may be required to replenish the APA account during the charter. This can be done with cash, although many choose to set up accounts with their charter brokers , which can be accessed if requested by the captain.

Taxes and Value Added Tax (VAT)

Most boats – whether all-inclusive or Plus Expenses – will not include local taxes or a Value Added Tax into their charter rate. The charterer will be responsible for paying those taxes. Taxes range significantly by destination; here’s a look at some of yachting’s most popular destinations:

• The Bahamas – Tax: 4% plus 10% VAT
• BVI – Tax: between $6 and $16 per person per day, depending on the flag of the boat
• Croatia – VAT: 13%
• Florida – Tax: 6% for Broward County, 7% for Miami-Dade County
• France – VAT: 20%, however, 10% can be applied when an itinerary includes International Waters
• Greece – VAT: 12%
• Italy – VAT: 22%, however 6.6% (over 24m) and 8.8% (under 24m) can be applied when an itinerary includes International Waters
• Montenegro – NO VAT
• New England – NO TAX
• Spain – VAT: 21%
• Turkey – NO VAT

Charterers can purchase cancellation and curtailment insurance – which is similar to traveler’s insurance. This insurance can help cover costs if a charterer must cancel or shorten the charter. Charter brokers can help you weigh insurance options, and often offer several different options.

Crew Gratuity

While crew gratuity is certainly not mandatory, it is recommended, particularly if you were truly impressed with your charter experience. In general, crew gratuity is roughly 15-20% of the base charter rate, which is handed to the captain at the conclusion of your charter.

Delivery Fees

While these fees do not apply on most charters, you may be asked to pay delivery costs if you are not chartering in the yacht’s normal cruising ground. In most cases, you will only be required to cover the fuel for the trip.

A weekly 80-foot catamaran charter runs around $40,000-100,000, and a week-long 100-foot motor yacht rental is anywhere between $50,000-80,000.

Does the price to rent a yacht change depending on what type of boat it is?

Yes. Worldwide Boat offers sailing yachts, catamarans, and motor yachts. All of these vessels have different capabilities, but there are other factors that determine the price beyond what type of boat you choose. The year the boat was built, owner, availability of water toys, onboard amenities, and the ship’s reputation can all change how much the ship is priced at.

When is the high season for yacht charters?

The price of a yacht fluctuates depending on the season. A Mediterranean yacht charter cost rises in the summer and drops in the winter, whereas Caribbean boat charter prices are high during the winter and lower in the summer months.

How does my destination affect charter yacht cost?

The more remote an area is, the more expensive it will be to charter a yacht there. That’s because prices go up in areas that have fewer boats. If you were to travel somewhere like the Galapagos, which isn’t a typical yacht destination, you’d pay more than you would if you were traveling to the Caribbean.

How much do I tip the crew when reviewing my yacht charter expenses?

It’s not required that you tip your crew, but it is recommended and appreciated. If you had an enjoyable experience it’s considered polite to tip your crew anywhere from 15-20% at the end of your charter.

The world famous park is also the most popular among Moscow citizens and city guests. Gorky Park was built in the Soviet times, but now it experiences its second youth as it has been recently renovated. A number of trendy restaurants, street food kiosks, sport playgrounds found their place in this cozy park. And this is actually the place where we embark and disembark.

Dominating the landscape, this controversial monument of Peter the Great stays right in the river and reminds us of the bright times of the Russian Navy. The Kremlin

The legendary fortress is of course the well-known symbol of Moscow and Russia. The active residence of Russian President and the birthplace of the Russian Statehood. To sail a boat in most countries you’ll need an internationally recognized boat licence, such as RYA, ICC, Radio License or CEVNI. However, this rule may vary from one country to another, therefore before departing on your trip we advice you to contact our team to see what kind of licences are accepted.

What is a security deposit?

Security deposit is refundable and you will receive it after check-out (after the boat has been inspected for any damages). However, if you cause damage you are responsible to the amount of security deposit ( it can't be exceeded ) and if your damage is less, the rest will be returned to you. Deposit price depends on the price of the boat.

What is a transit log?

Transit Log is one payment for following services (in most cases) : final cleaning, bed linen, base marina fees, diver check. Transit Log services may differ depending on charter company - you can always contact our support team which will be able to outline the specifics of Transit Log for your booking.

In a groundbreaking announcement for future Bahamas and Abacos Islands yacht charters , plans for the new Habacoa Superyacht Marina in South Abaco have been revealed, poised to become 'North America's largest and most comprehensive marina to date' and redefine luxury marina experiences in the popular sun-soaked yacht charter destination .

Habacoa Superyacht Marina is set to elevate the traditional marina concept for Bahamas yacht charters by integrating opulent facilities, high-end residences, and a five-star hotel. WATCH: Charter boat spots Orcas near Destin

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - A rare sight in the Gulf of Mexico, a Destin charter boat company says they spotted a pod of Orcas on Tuesday.

Charter Boat Lady Em’s Captain Travis Ream said he captured the video and had to share the unique sight with everyone.

When on the phone with Captain Ream, he told us, “First we caught up to... it looked like a giant male, a couple of little females, a baby with some actual dolphins rolling with him. Then I saw up in front of them was the video that I shared was four more bigger ones all swimming together. So I pulled up to them and even when I saw them, I could see more groups in front in front of those ones you know like a half of a mile, a mile ahead you can see them surfacing and spouting. So, there’s probably twelve, fifteen total.”

He said the biggest Orca they saw looked to be around 25 or 30 feet long and it was breathtaking to see them in the wild.

“It was incredible! They come up about every fifteen seconds, but they were covering a lot of ground... and I had to go pretty fast to even catch up to them. But they were definitely traveling with purpose, you know... they had an agenda on their mind wherever they were going.”

On Facebook, Ream said the Orcas were spotted heading south in Desoto Canyon.

According to NOAA, Killer Whales, can be spotted in the Northern part of the Gulf of Mexico but it is a rare occasion.

One of the numerous islands composing the Thimble Islands archipelago off southeastern Connecticut has hit the market for a princely $35 million sum. 

Known as Rogers Island, the glam landmass is being sold by Greg Jensen, an executive at Bridgewater Associates, Mansion Global first reported. 

Jensen, who is the Connecticut-based hedge fund’s co-chief investment officer, purchased Rogers Island in 2018, paying former owners Edmund and Christine Stoecklein $22 million for it, according to the outlet. Rogers was one of numerous islands the couple had accumulated before listing eight of them for $78 million in 2016. It’s located off the coast of Branford.

“Rogers Island is such a unique offering because you have almost every amenity imaginable at your fingertips,” Douglas Elliman’s Jennifer Leahy, who holds the listing, told The Post. “Relax poolside, play a game of tennis, perfect your putting skills, or explore the incredible gardens and mature trees that adorn this 7.65-acre retreat.”

The island, which is one of the larger islands in the archipelago, can only be reached by boat. It has three septic systems, a generator and a recently updated electrical system that gets power from the mainland, Mansion Global reported. 

Numerous buildings dot its acreage, including a restored main house, an artist’s studio, a greenhouse, a pool house and a four-bedroom guesthouse with a wraparound porch.

The main house was initially constructed in approximately 1900 and measures in at just under 8,750 square feet. It has 10 bedrooms, a kitchen renovated by Jensen and a clean, modern look throughout. On the grounds, there is a tennis court, a putting green, a pool, gardens galore, a koi pond, meandering trails, three private beaches, two docks and staff quarters. 

As well, listing photos show an array of al fresco dining and lounging areas, and multiple gazebos.

When the Joe Cool was found 140 miles off course of the Miami-Bimini route sans crew or passengers, investigators questioned a fugitive who once posed as a C.I.A. agent.

Six Americans boarded a charter fishing boat in Miami Beach, Florida, heading for the western Bahaman shores of Bimini. But when the vessel, dubbed Joe Cool, failed to make its return, friends and family feared the worst, as featured in the season premiere of Deadly Waters with Captain Lee .

On September 22, 2007, the 47-foot fishing vessel left the Miami Beach Marina, planning to make the 50-odd-mile trip east to the Bahaman coast. On board were the boat’s captain, Jake Branam, his wife, Kelley Branam, and two crewmen: Scott Gamble, Jake Branam’s half-brother, and first mate Samuel “Sammy” Kairy, a close friend of the family. All four were well-versed in the world of fishing and boating, said those who knew them best.

That day, two men booked the Joe Cool to take them for the roughly two-and-a-half-hour ride to Bimini. They paid $4,000 to Branam, and though the crew suggested the pair could take a much cheaper flight, the men claimed their girlfriends accidentally stowed their passports in inaccessible luggage, and therefore, they wanted to book the Joe Cool.

Jake Branam’s uncle and Joe Cool owner, Jeff Branam, reported the party “overdue” to authorities the next day.

“When a vessel is reported as overdue, that means the boat did not meet its scheduled return, but overdues happen all the time,” said Deadly Waters host Captain Lee of Bravo ’s Below Deck franchise. “The fish are biting, and passengers want to stay out longer, or people drink too much in Bimini and need to sleep it off, which causes a delay.”

It should have been a straightforward trip to Bimini and back. Branam reportedly planned to drop the men off on a boat that carried their girlfriends and then squeeze in some fishing on the way back. But what struck loved ones as odd was that Branam — who shared two children with his wife — had business to attend the following day, according to true crime author Carol Cope.

“It was important to Jake to be back the next day in time for another charter that he had planned,” Cope told Deadly Waters.

According to Jake Branam and Scott Gamble’s sister, Amie Gamble, Jake Branam was well on his way to finding success.

“In 2007, Joe Cool was doing amazing,” said the sister. “Jake knew where to go to find the fish, so so many people were contacting him, and his charter boat business began to really, really take off.”

Authorities search for missing boat Joe Cool

The United States Coast Guard (U.S.C.G.) sent out a PAN-PAN message, the equivalent of what a Be On the Lookout (B.O.L.O.) means on land. When officials failed to contact the Joe Cool, an official search and rescue operation, which included searches by air and sea, commenced, according to now-retired Edwin Daniels of the U.S.C.G. Miami Sector.

“We knew that something was wrong,” Daniels told Deadly Waters.

Authorities were aware the waters between Miami and Bimini were no stranger to drug smuggling and piracy — especially out of Cuba — but there was still no sign of the Joe Cool along the well-traveled route.

Then, about 36 hours after the group left on the Joe Cool, Commanding Officer Jonathan Carter of the U.S.C.G.’s Cutter Pea Island — which guarded the Key West — was alerted by a deck officer about a “target of interest” on the horizon.

The vessel’s conning tower told Carter that the boat was used for sports fishing, but it was spotted in an “unusual” location, about 30 miles north of Cuba and 140 miles off-course of the Joe Cool’s planned route.

“Sports fishers don’t need to run that far south and burn that much fuel to find fish,” Carter told Deadly Waters.

Another disturbing observation was that the 75-foot anchor lines had been “let out” despite the boat being in “well over 200 feet of water.” The stern door of the Joe Cool was open and swinging about.

Authorities, learning the boat was the missing Joe Cool, believed it was intentionally left there. According to Captain Lee, fast-moving Gulf currents surged north, making it impossible for a boat to drift south where it was discovered.

“If the Joe Cool had a mechanical problem, the current would have pushed it north at a very rapid rate, meaning that the only way the boat could have ended up at the location where it was found is if someone intentionally piloted the vessel in that direction, going against the current,” said Captain Lee.

“A crime scene floating in the middle of the ocean”

The U.S.C.G.’s boarding team circled the vessel, cautious of possible hijackers on board. After getting clearance from their X.O. (Executive Officer), they boarded the Joe Cool and found no one.

Inside, car keys, wallets, and fishing poles in their fishing positions were “clear indications” that passengers had no intentions of leaving, according to Carter. Officers also found blood on the scene, and though the blood might have been from caught fish, they called in the F.B.I. for assistance.

A missing life raft highlighted that survivors could still be out there and possibly injured.

“At this point, the U.S. Coast Guard called the F.B.I. in this matter because the F.B.I. has primacy in crime on the high seas as it relates to U.S. persons and citizens,” said F.B.I. Supervisory Special Agent David Nunez. “It’s a very unique situation where your crime scene is floating in the middle of the ocean. You have to think very carefully about the strategy you’re going to use and how you’re going to investigate this.”

Urgency only grew at the threat of an impending monsoon, and officials scanned sea and land through the night, including along Anguilla Cay, about 11.5 nautical miles north of where the Joe Cool was found. Authorities tasked with protecting the crime scene towed the boat back to land in light of the forecast.

“We still had hope,” said Amie Gamble.

The following day, air searchers spotted a covered lifeboat south of Anguilla Cay with the stenciled name “Joe Cool” on the side. The wind formed by the helicopter blades blew the tarp off, exposing two people inside.

The U.S.C.G. lowered baskets into the water and saved the two passengers. Since noise prevented helicopter passengers from hearing one another, one of the saved men wrote on a piece of paper: “West Bimini. We were abandoned in the boat. Hijacking. Four Killed.”

With the new information provided by the passengers, later identified as 18-year-old Guillermo Zarbozo and 36-year-old Kirby Archer, searches for the Branams, Gamble, and Kairy were called off.

“Not having any closure, there’s no grave to go to,” Amie Gamble told Deadly Waters. “The only place we can go is the ocean.”

A second search of the Joe Cool

Authorities conducted a second search of the Joe Cool once it made land, where they found four 9mm spent shell casings, which supported the men’s statements. But in what F.B.I. Special Agent Nunez called an “odd crime scene,” a blowgun, darts, throwing stars, and a handcuff key were also found on site, and expensive fishing and electrical equipment had been left behind.

“It looked ransacked, but it didn’t appear that anything was stolen,” Nunez told Deadly Waters.

“By definition, pirates are robbers who travel by sea,” said Captain Lee. “What pirates don’t do is board a boat, kill and remove the crew and passengers, and then leave without taking all of the valuables.”

As the surviving passengers headed back to dry land with authorities, Zarbozo — seeing the Joe Cool — commented to a federal agent that he’d never been on the boat, which “didn’t make sense” since he was found in the Joe Cool lifeboat, according to Nunez. It signaled that he was lying.

“So, at this point, we had reason to detain,” said Nunez. “Had it not been for that, they would have walked off that Coast Guard cutter.”

Interviews with Guillermo Zarbozo and Kirby Archer

In F.B.I. interviews, Zarbozo claimed three Cuban pirates killed Jake Branam, Kelley Branam, Scott Gamble, and Sammy Kairy before forcing Kirby Archer to drive the Joe Cool toward Cuba, running out of gas about eight hours later. However, Zarbozo’s story didn’t match Archer’s, as there were inconsistencies with what the purported hijackers wore when leaving on a second boat and in what order they murdered the victims.

But, according to U.S.C.G.’s Edwin Daniels, “Nothing can explain why you get in a life raft on a boat that’s perfectly seaworthy.”

The Joe Cool was well-equipped with communications gear that anyone could easily use in case of an emergency. Furthermore, investigators wondered why alleged pirates would kill four people and let two live while also leaving items of value behind.

Federal Prosecutor Karen Gilbert helped examine the survivors’ backgrounds, finding that  Zarbozo lived with his family in South Florida and had no criminal history. The teen worked as an armed security officer and reportedly had aspirations of one day working in law enforcement.

Kirby Archer, on the other hand, had a pending warrant for his arrest out of Arkansas, where he reportedly worked as a Wal-Mart customer service manager before allegedly stealing from his place of employment. Author Carol Cope said he was accused of stealing upward of $92,000 before going on the run.

This, F.B.I. Special Agent Nunez told Deadly Waters  that gave Archer a motive, and it was enough for the Feds to keep him in custody. But for Guillermo Zarbozo, prosecutors needed something to stick.

“It’s very difficult to prosecute a murder case at sea, and if we can’t charge him right away, we were very concerned that he would flee to avoid prosecution,” Prosecutor Gilbert told Deadly Waters.

Kirby Archer Confesses to Murder

Shell casings found on the Joe Cool lined up with a receipt found in Zarbozo’s Florida home, showing a purchase for 9mm ammunition made by the same brand of ammo found on the boat. Agents confronted the suspects with the ballistics results and,, coupled with the threat of prosecutors seeking the death penalty, Archer agreed to talk.

Archer told investigators that he and Zarbozo met at an auto body shop where the latter worked as a security guard. Archer presented himself as a C.I.A. agent, recruiting Zarbozo to help him with a job in Cuba, according to Cope.

“Zarbozo wanted to get into law enforcement,” Gilbert said. “Kirby Archer was telling him that if he successfully did this mission, he would get him a job with the C.I.A.”

Investigators believe Archer was attempting to flee to Cuba to avoid charges in the other cases against him.

Archer claimed he first shot Captain Jake Branam and then his wife, Kelley. He said it was Zarbozo who killed Gamble and Kairy before throwing all four victims overboard.

Their bodies have never been found.

Ultimately, Archer pleaded guilty to avoid the death penalty, though Zarbozo maintained that the quadruple murder was “part of a covert C.I.A. operation,” according to Captain Lee.

Zarbozo went to trial on a 16-count indictment, which included facing charges of murder, robbery, overtaking a vessel, and other firearm charges. A jury unanimously found him guilty on all counts.

Archer and Zarbozo are now serving five consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole. Jake Branam and Scott Gamble’s sister, Amie Gamble, told Deadly Waters that the men’s punishment was “such a relief.”

“As the years have gone by, you’re reminded every holiday that you don’t have the hugs, and the joy, and the love from the ones we’ve lost,” she said. “We’ll never have that again. There’s still a hole that will never go away.”

A broken distress call as waves swamped their boat near Seward, then silence

U.S. Coast Guard officials say they tracked an aluminum boat carrying four people in rough seas miles from Seward for hours before what started as a daylong fishing trip turned into a disaster last week.

The 22-foot Hewescraft was taking on water in Aialik Bay, where the group spent the night in a sheltered cove after dangerous conditions and foul weather prevented them from getting home the day before. Mariners in the area described 10- or 12-foot waves and winds gusting to 30 mph.

The Coast Guard was checking in with the boat every half-hour for five hours with no reports of trouble, a spokesman said this week.

But then, just before 7:45 a.m. last Wednesday, came the broken radio transmission with “need help” as the only words watchstanders could make out, according to Lt. Cmdr. Mike Salerno, spokesman for the 17th Coast Guard District.

A Coast Guard helicopter that launched from Kodiak arrived just over two hours later, Salerno said.

By then, the boat had capsized near the mouth of Aialik Bay, leaving one man dead and three others missing.

The body of Soldotna resident Hayden Green, 29, was recovered by a tour boat about three hours after the distress call went out, authorities have said. The helicopter crew spotted the vessel and asked the Major Marine Tours catamaran carrying 80 passengers to bring Green’s body to shore before diverting to Seward to refuel, officials said.

Troopers identified the three missing as Joshua Green, 60, of Seward; his son Caleb Green, 29, of Anchorage; and Melanie Porter, 60, of Seward. Hayden Green was Josh Green’s nephew.

Concerns surface about Coast Guard future

Local officials say the incident reflects the potential for trouble in a community that attracts scores of visitors to its waters every summer, especially given questions surrounding the future of the Cutter Mustang, the Coast Guard vessel home-ported in the city since 1986.

Bob Barnwell, a Seward City Council member and experienced mariner, said that conversations with officials in Washington, D.C., have indicated Seward could go without a home-ported vessel for several years.

“They have no idea what boating in Gulf of Alaska is like,” he said. “I just think having a boat in proximity to this area is fundamentally important. They said the helicopter out of Kodiak is available.”

The 110-foot patrol vessel responds to rescues as well as fuel spills and other calls.

Asked why the Mustang didn’t respond to last week’s incident, Salerno said Coast Guard patrol boats rotate between scheduled operational periods, maintenance periods, and “ready” status. In this case, the Cutter Naushon home-ported in Homer was the “ready” cutter and was sent to the search area, he said.

The Coast Guard plans to decommission the Mustang and replace it, officials said, though they could not provide a timeline.

Salerno said this week that he has no specifics on decommissioning plans. The agency is modernizing and replacing the aging patrol boats with 154-foot fast cutters, he said.

Local officials say they’ve heard different updates from Coast Guard and other federal officials.

Losing a local Coast Guard vessel, even for a short amount of time, is concerning, said Kat Sorensen, Seward’s city manager. Without a cutter physically based in Seward, residents and visitors would need to always rely on helicopters and vessels based in other coastal communities like Kodiak or Homer.

“I definitely think it is a concern for a community that spends so much time on the water and has so many people from all across the world coming up to spend time on the water,” Sorensen said. “We are, as a community, grateful and happy with the Coast Guard presence we have in Seward.”

Check-ins every 30 minutes before final call

Josh Green’s brother this week said he and his brother shared the 22-foot Ocean Pro that went down at the mouth of Aialik Bay.

The Green family moved to Alaska in 1974. Josh Green and his siblings graduated from Anchorage’s East High School. Green retired as an Anchorage School District administrator but was teaching special education students in Seward, his brother Tim said.

Former wrestlers at Bartlett High School described Josh Green as a beloved coach who reached hundreds of young people. A GoFundMe established to help Green’s widow had raised more than $11,000 by Thursday.

The group was probably fishing for halibut and rockfish, maybe trolling for feeder kings, Tim Green said this week. His brother had just met Porter through a mutual landlord, he said: “Like he did with many people, even strangers, he invited her fishing.”

Coast Guard officials say they were alerted to a potential problem by a family member. Hayden Green’s fiance realized the boat was overdue and reached out to his father, who called the Coast Guard, according to Tim Green.

The Coast Guard “immediately began trying to locate the vessel,” Salerno wrote in an email this week. They made radio contact just after 2 a.m. Wednesday “and confirmed the vessel and four passengers were not in distress and not requesting any assistance. At this time the Coast Guard maintained radio contact with the vessel every 30 minutes while they awaited favorable weather to transit back to Seward.”

The last clear message the Coast Guard received from the boat came at 7:10 a.m. Wednesday, Salerno said: There had been no changes and the boat was safely anchored.

Tim Green said that’s when his brother told them that he had motored out to test the conditions but it was still rough. Then he missed the next radio check-in.

The distress call came at 7:43 a.m., according to the Coast Guard.

Another mariner in the area last week told Tim Green he saw more logs than he’s ever seen. Green said it’s possible the boat hit a log that sheared off the propeller, cutting the power and leaving the boat at the mercy of the waves.

He said he’s spent 40 years going in and out of Seward to hunt and fish and his brother was well aware of taking personal responsibility for safety.

But, Green said, he’s also personally witnessed the vital role the Coast Guard plays. Some years ago, he watched the agency rescue hypothermic sailors near Seward within an hour of a call for help.

“That’s something they wouldn’t have been able to do out of Homer,” he said.
