At 162.5 metres, Eclipse is the second largest superyacht in the world and was dethroned from the top spot three years after its launch by megayacht Azzam.

Step on board the 162.5m Eclipse - the second largest superyacht in the world

Designer Terry Disdale talks us through the four and a half years, nine decks and 162.5 metres of the world’s second largest superyacht.

Terry Disdale didn’t set out to design the biggest superyacht in the world. “No one ever said to me, ‘I want a 160 metre boat’,” he says over breakfast near his office in Richmond, London. “When the yacht was still on the drawing board, there was a rumour going round that someone was building an even bigger boat, and the owner was asked if he knew about it. He said he didn’t, and that he didn’t care. Breaking records was the farthest thing from his mind.”

What he did care about was helicopters – he wanted to carry more than one; and the pool – it had to be big. There were also some early discussions about low bulwarks and big windows, and that was the totality of the brief for what would become Eclipse . “To be given free rein is actually a dreadful thing,” says Disdale.  “I asked myself what I wanted: something timeless. How do you design something timeless that’s still going to look good and not be anaemic? It’s so easy to get carried away, but you’ve got to be able to look at it in 20 years and decide it still looks OK.” But that’s the trick, isn’t it? And the measure of a designer.

  • The 25 largest yachts in the world

At least Disdale had some hooks on which to hang the design. “Part of what creates the yacht looking like that is you’ve got to land this huge helicopter on the front, so the superstructure is pushed back. The formation of the boat is built around helicopter usage. And we didn’t want the boat to look unbalanced when the helicopter is on the foredeck. Some boats have a foredeck that looks wrong whenever a helicopter sits there.”

The lines of the boat were dictated by another prerequisite: the two significant lifeboats demanded by Solas. The sheerline runs straight aft from the bow and steps up amidships, the high freeboard created giving visual support to the lifeboats. “If you’d had a different sheerline, the lifeboats wouldn’t have looked comfortable,” the designer says. This, plus the addition of a 15 metre pool aft on the main deck, meant that the overall length of Eclipse – 162.5 metres – was defined not by ego but by practicality.

“Everyone thinks that a boat starts with a sketch, some glamorous visual of the outside of the boat. But that’s not how things work in my office – we start with a plan, a general arrangement.” The project, from this first design stage to the boat’s launch at Blohm+Voss ’s Hamburg yard in 2009, took four and a half years – a remarkable achievement given the scale of the yacht, which was only overtaken as the world’s biggest in 2013 with the launch of 180 metre Azzam .

Up to 20 engineers from Blue Ocean Yacht Management were present on site throughout the build, whipping it along to meet the aggressive delivery schedule. Disdale doesn’t recall any sleepless nights – “at least, no more than usual!” he laughs. The pressure of designing what was then the world’s top yacht – both inside and out – did obviously register, though. “It’s a huge responsibility building something of that magnitude, which is going to be under everyone’s magnifying glass. It’s not just ‘doing a job’, this thing is going to be scrutinised and analysed by everyone. There’s a responsibility to yourself as a designer.”

A decade from delivery, and more than 15 years from the moment Disdale first put pen to paper, he says he wouldn’t change a thing – and nor has the owner, who has kept Disdale’s designs largely unchanged. “For me, it’s more a clean piece of architecture than it is a piece of styling. The fact that you have a helipad on the front creates the superstructure to bow dimension, which is beautiful. If it wasn’t there, you wouldn’t have that length. And then when you get to the back of the boat, the swimming pool is dictating another piece of the story. I don’t know what I would change now. I don’t sit around saying, ‘I wish I did this or that’. Maybe I’d make the rear end look a bit more inviting, the way the staircases lead into the boat, but anti-piracy was a concern, plus there are a load of services and facilities back there. There’s a full-size pantry to serve the beach club, which very few boats have, and gull-wing doors with a pullout barbecue and pizza oven. There’s a lot you don’t see.”

Disdale’s long experience in the business means he is able to resist the temptation to force designs, or slavishly follow trends that flare and fade, leaving boats looking old before their time. “ Eclipse is a handsome boat, and it looks like a boat. It doesn’t make any pretence,” he says. “The key word is elegance. Very few boats can make that claim any more. Modern boats are purposeful, aggressive, macho, which has led to them all having snub noses. They look angry. You could paint them grey and stick a cannon on the front and it wouldn’t upset their stance at all. Eclipse is not like that.” It’s a familiar sermon from Disdale, who famously posts his 10 “design commandments” up round his office. “One of  the most important tools in your box is restraint. I can have complete freedom when designing a superstructure, but restraint is actually the most important thing – knowing when to stop gilding the lily. Don’t gild it! Use silver leaf.”

  • Inside the Surrey home of legendary superyacht designer Terence Disdale

The obvious benefit of a single designer being responsible for the interior and exterior of a yacht is a seamless flow between the two, and that is absolutely true of Eclipse , whose interior conforms to another one of Disdale’s mantras: “ beach house not penthouse ”. “If you’ve got a dining room with satin on the chairs and gold braid around them, but you live in a T-shirt and shorts, then you’re not comfortable,” he says.

The pool is a vast entertaining space, with 3.2 metre overheads and a retracting glass sunroof. “The ambience of the pool is as important as how it looks. You’ve got to want to sit by it.” Or dance on it: the blue granite bottom of the pool rises up to sit flush with the deck. It can also be lowered a touch to create a paddling pool.

The interior of any boat should be about “pure relaxation”, says Disdale. “People are on vacation, people are chilled.” He relates one story of an Arab client in the 1980s, who he dissuaded from fitting gold taps to his superyacht. “I told him he already had a 65 metre on the quay – he had already made his statement. It was a process of trying to quieten his ostentation.” You get the feeling no such effort was needed with the owner of Eclipse . “He had already owned three yachts to our design, so consequently was very familiar with my way of working and the habitat I create.” It’s impossible to miss the very deliberate warmth of that habitat and a design miracle that, despite using broadly the same colour palette throughout, nowhere do you tire of the ochre-like shades.

This uniformity wasn’t applied to the lobbies between decks: different artists were tasked with creating unique works to give each lobby a flavour, so there is no confusion about what deck you’re on – a problem when you have nine. One of these pieces is a wooden sculpture made up of seven pieces, the design for which was hand drawn by Disdale and sent to Japan for manufacture. It’s a stunning work and symptomatic of the detail shown throughout – even in more mundane pieces, like the sideboards in the cabins that were designed in Europe and crafted in Chile.

With no clear-cut brief on the yacht’s layout, Disdale was forced to second-guess, “but that’s my job”, he says. “You have to work out how people will move around the boat.” The benefit of an LOA like Eclipse ’s is the owner can swallow serious acreage without impacting the guest experience. It’s not about avoiding guests, but being able to operate independently of them.

It would be easy to mistake the guest suites for the owner’s own quarters, such is their footprint. There are 18 guest cabins in total, served by 100 crew. From the moment the guests arrive by chopper, mainly on the top helideck, they’re absorbed in the comfort of the boat and have access to the main stairwell and elevator. It’s a transition of which Disdale is particularly proud. “It came from understanding how a boat is used. When you get out of the helicopter, you’re blown to pieces, and then where do you go?” The answer is an intimate lounge, where you can freshen up before entering the interior proper. It also gives pilots somewhere to conduct safety briefings, he points out. Eclipse is able to travel with multiple helicopters on board because one can be housed in the forward hangar, one above it on the retractable platform and another on the sundeck.

At the other extremity of the boat, the convenience continues with a huge bathing platform and staircases that fold down into the water for easy boarding – even for those wearing full dive gear. The beach club wasn’t maxed out, with a comfortable lounge along the centreline preferred to a big open area that is harder to secure. Beyond, though, the lower deck opens up into a huge 77 square metre gym and spa area, complete with massage room, beauty salon, sauna, shower areas and the yacht’s second plunge pool. Visual interest is added by banks of portholes with views into the swimming pool, which dapple light across this whole space. Choosing somewhere to relax on deck is slightly harder – where do you start? The options are endless but special mention has to be made of the wood-burning fire pit on the upper deck – perfect for nights on deck under the stars.

Disdale and his team were present in June 2009 when the boat appeared from the giant drydock in Hamburg. No butterflies – he claims to have been pretty zen about seeing her free of scaffolding and plastic. “Although you design every part of it and you see it being built, nothing prepares you for the feeling you get when you actually see it in the flesh. The tug pulled it out and there was the thickness of a mattress between the wing stations and the shed walls. Literally – they tied mattresses to the stations. When it appeared I was gobsmacked.” As was the owner, pleasingly for the man who’d dedicated nearly five years to the project.

“It’s like cars,” explains the car fanatic. “I was talking about Lamborghinis the other day. They used to have the Miura, a beautiful car. But they replaced it with the Countach, which looks like it was carved from cheese. One is ageless and one looks stuck in time. Elegance is the most important thing. The Miura is elegant, the Jaguar E-Type is elegant.” He’s too modest to say but Eclipse belongs in that league – beautiful for ever.

Scenic Eclipse 2 Itineraries

Scenic eclipse 2 review, review of scenic eclipse 2.

The 2023-built Scenic Eclipse 2 cruise ship is Croatia ( Rijeka )-built superyacht. The same-designed sistership Scenic Eclipse 1 was inaugurated in 2019.

The vessel (IMO number 9850460) is currently Bahamas- flagged (MMSI 238269640) and registered in Nassau . Curiously, during its construction, the vessel was Croatia-flagged and named "NOVOGRADNJA 101" (MMSI 238269640) and "BRIONI" (MMSI 238000000).

This is a top-luxury superyacht with max passenger capacity 228 (plus 192 staff-crew) and a 10-deck design, more resembling a billionaire yacht than a passenger ship. The ultra-modern design features an ice-strengthened hull, top-deck helipad (with two on-deck stored helicopters / in hangars), 12x Zodiacs (high-speed, large-capacity RIBs / rigid inflatable boats), 1x submersible (9-person mini-submarine/model "Triton 660-9 AVA"), 1x ROV (camera-equipped Remotely Operated Vehicle). The aft-located Marina Platform is used for launching water sports equipment (aqua quad-bikes, seakayaks, snorkeling and scuba diving activities).

Scenic Eclipse II cruise ship

With the top-luxury expedition superyachts Eclipse 1 and Eclipse 2, Scenic Cruises and Tours (1987-founded river cruisetour company) entered the ocean-cruising market. The first boat (Eclipse 1) was launched in August 2018 and inaugurated in September 2019. The second vessel (Eclipse II) was scheduled for inauguration in 2020 but postponed to 2022-Q3 and eventually, to 2023 (April).

Besides Scenic Luxury Cruises and Tours, the shipowner Scenic Group also owns the subsidiary and travel brand Emerald Cruises .

Scenic Cruises yacht design

Scenic's new ships are advertised as "discovery yachts". The hull has the highest passenger ship ice-class (1A-Super) allowing the vessel to operate on polar cruises (Arctic and Antarctica itineraries) for 3 months a year. On polar voyages, the ship's passenger capacity is limited to 200 in order to allow several Zodiac landings per day.

Scenic Cruises yacht submarine

The ship's 2 helicopters Airbus H130 (single-engine aircraft, each with capacity 7 passengers) can be booked/hired at extra charge. Helicopter tours allow passengers to get closer to the wildlife in comparison to the Zodiac landings. Also at an additional charge can be booked the ship's Triton submarine. The 9-person submarine (1 pilot plus 8 passengers) is named "Scenic Neptune" and is capable to submerge up to 660 ft (200 m).

The vessel has an almost 1:1 passenger-to-crew ratio and each stateroom are served by a dedicated butler.

The boat has 10 decks , of which 8 are passenger-accessible and 5 with cabins.

Four Lifts (midship-located Elevators) interconnect all cabin decks.

In comparison to Eclipse 1, Eclipse 2's steam room area is larger/expanded and features an aromatherapy room, ice fountain, experience showers (water at different temperatures and intensities, a KLAFS salt therapy lounge (with infrared chairs/color light therapy).

In comparison to Scenic Eclipse 1, Scenic Eclipse 2's swimming pool and sundeck (Deck 10) are larger-sized. There is also a new poolside bar (with indoor-outdoor seating) and the swimming pool is oval-shaped.

The ship has "zero speed stabilizer fins" (50% larger than typical on a similar-sized vessel) allowing it to navigate in rough seas with just little movement. Voyages to Antarctica include passing Drake Passage - a notoriously rough waterway between South America and Antarctica.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

Scenic Eclipse 2 cruise ship offers all 9 dining venues plus 24-hour room service. The ship also has an impressive number of bars and lounges - 8, which is an extraordinary variety considering the vessel's size. All these options are complimentary (cruise price inclusive).

Scenic Eclipse II cruise ship

These venues range from the open-kitchen Teppanyaki grill dining (capacity 10 people) to the Chef's Table (private VIP dining for 8 people). The main dining room restaurant "Elements" offers Italian fare, seafood, and steaks. The other restaurants are named Koko's (Asian, with sake bar), Sushi at Koko's (authentic Japanese), Lumiere (French, with Champagne Bar). The Yacht Club has its own a bar, buffet and poolside grill. Scenic Eclipse 2 Wiki

The Malta- flagged vessel Scenic Eclipse II (IMO number 9850460) was designed with the latest technological advancements in order to ensure the highest safety standards. It has custom-built fin stabilizers (50% bigger than on other vessels with similar GT tonnage) and an ice-strengthened hull.

The yacht's state-of-the-art fins are able to adjust themselves, enabling the boat to handle the strongest water currents and to remain stable. Unlike other ships that use traditional anchors, Scenic's mega-yachts are fitted with a dynamic positioning system. It uses GPS data to accurately maintain the ship's position - an eco-friendly way to control the vessel. The other environmentally sustainable systems implemented are efficient marine engines and advanced water treatment system.

The ship's integrated navigation and automation/control system was provided by the company Kongsberg Maritime. This modern technology combines the following systems - Navigation, Dynamic Positioning, automation, Emergency Shutdown, Power Management, Safety Management, and Control. The system is integrated with online diagnostics and remote service facilities.

Both vessels operated by Scenic Yacht Cruises are owned by Scenic Group and Croatia-built - Eclipse 1 in Pula (Uljanik Shipyard), Eclipse 2 in Rijeka (3 Maj Shipyard). Eclipse 2 yacht's construction officially started on April 24, 2020, with the steel-cutting ceremony held at Rijeka's 3 Maj Shipyard (Treci Maj Brodogradiliste).

With Eclipse 2, Scenic Group established a new fully-owned subsidiary company (MKM Yachts) that manages newbuilds' construction. In late-April 2020 Scenic Group also announced plans to build in Croatia 5x new superyachts in the next 6 years. For these shipbuilding projects was dedicated a separate section at Rijeka's Maj 3 Shipyard. In early-July 2020, MKM Yachts was granted a sub-concession at Rijeka's shipyard. This way, the company became the prime contractor for all Scenic Group's newbuilds.

In August 2020, Scenic Group (shipowner) contracted Viking Crew (part of the Dover UK -based Viking Maritime Group Ltd) as the vessel's crew managing company. Viking Crew is responsible for the Scenic Eclipse 2 yacht's crew recruitment, management, deployment and placement, including officers and staff-crew from the onboard Engine, Hotel and Deck departments. Viking Crew was also contracted for the crew management of the superyachts Scenic Eclipse 1 (2019) and Emerald Azzurra (2021).

The vessel's construction officially started with the keel-laying ceremony held on May 12, 2021, at Rijeka's Maj 3 Shipyard. The special event was attended by Glen Moroney (Scenic Group's founder, owner and Chairman), Andrej Plenkovic (Croatia's Prime Minister), Tomislav Coric (Croatia's Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development) and Oleg Butkovic (Croatia's Minister of Maritime Affairs, Transport and Infrastructure).

The superyacht was launched/floated out from drydock on June 25, 2022. The ceremony was attended by Glen Moroney.

In December 2022, Anna Wolfsteiner (Scenic Group's Chief Sales & Marketing Officer) announced the name of the ship's godmother - Kathryn Dwyer Sullivan (1951-born American scientist/geologist and oceanographer, and a former US Navy officer and NASA astronaut).

The Adriatic Sea trials were in two phases and successfully conducted in February-March 2023. The superyacht was officially delivered on April 6, 2023, when it left the Croatian shipyard. The delivery ceremony was attended by VIP guests like Andrej Plenkovic (Croatia's Prime Minister), Sasa Cokljat (Managing Director MKM Yachts), Glen Moroney (Scenic Group's Owner, Founder and Chairman). In April 6-13th started the relocation voyage around Italy (from Rijeka to Lisbon) from where started the 11-day Maiden Voyage ("Incredible Iberian Discovery" itinerary, Lisbon to Barcelona).

Scenic Eclipse II's christening ceremony was on June 3, 2023, held dockside in Port Malaga (Spain) during the 10-day voyage from Barcelona to Lisbon. The official naming ceremony was led by godmother Kathryn Sullivan and attended by Glen Moroney, travel industry professionals, media representatives, VIP guests (Dutch dignitaries and government officials) as well as the current voyage's passengers.

The following YouTube video is a timelapse of the Scenic yachts construction process.

In late-September 2021 Scenic Group contracted Triton Submarines for the construction of a new-design submersible for the Eclipse 2 yacht.

  • The Scenic-Triton deal was for the construction of one submarine (model "Triton 660-9 AVA". The submersible has max capacity 8 passengers (plus the pilot), max operating depth 200 m (660 ft), patented hull design (elliptically shaped,metallic-acrylic).
  • The long-term agreement was signed by Rob Voss (Scenic Group's COO) and Patrick Lahey (Triton Submarines' President).
  • The Vero Beach Florida-based Triton Submarines specializes in designing and manufacturing of commercial and privately-owned submersibles. These vessels are usually used for scientific researches, filming, as well as equipment for private superyachts and smaller-sized cruise ships. The company has a fully-owned subsidiary in Barcelona Spain (Triton Submarines EMEA).
  • In 2017, Triton started (via partnership with Aston Martin) the ultra-luxury submarine project "Neptune". The new model "Triton 1650-3 Low Profile" mini-sub was designed after Aston Martin's Valkyrie (aka "Nebula"/limited production hybrid sports car) and features improved hydrodynamics and more powerful propulsion system/thrusters.

In January 2022, Scenic Group contracted De Wave Group (global contractor for cruise ships and superyacht interiors) for Eclipse 2's outfitting. By the contract, De Wave Group provided and installed all the 114 staterooms (including cabin bathrooms), passenger decks' hallways/corridors, all crew deck areas (including crew cabins and hallways), all dining venues, catering areas and storage rooms (galleys/kitchens, cold rooms).

Canucks depth chart: Trade chips, roster holes, free agents and more

VANCOUVER, CANADA - MAY 10: Vancouver Canucks head coach Rick Tocchet looks on during the third period in Game Two of the Second Round of the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs against the Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Arena on May 10, 2024 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. (Photo by Derek Cain/Getty Images)

The Vancouver Canucks enter this offseason with high expectations and an even higher degree of uncertainty across nearly their entire roster.

Fresh off of an impressive campaign and with a relatively large handful of key expiring supporting pieces, there’s significant work for Canucks president of hockey operations Jim Rutherford and general manager Patrik Allvin to do this summer just to maintain the level this club hit this past season. And, of course, maintaining the roster as it stands won’t be enough. The goal is to meaningfully improve.

Uncertainty is a double-edged sword. The version of the Canucks that we saw win the Pacific Division, advance to the second round of the playoffs and push the Oilers to seven games is gone. That’s the reality of operating in a hard-cap league.

Next year’s Canucks team is going to have a very different look and feel, but the cap flexibility exists to upgrade at various key positions. It won’t be easy and it won’t be straightforward, but with some aggression and creativity — in line with what Canucks management was able to display last summer — there’s a path to improving this roster.

Let’s go position by position and grapple with some of the major issues the Canucks will have to navigate during a high-stakes summer.

Note: Pending unrestricted free agents are shaded red, pending restricted free agents are shaded blue, junior-aged players are shaded orange.

When we mapped out the Canucks’ depth chart last summer , left wing was one of the deepest positions. Nils Höglander , for example, was technically the sixth left wing on the pecking order. Since then, Andrei Kuzmenko and Anthony Beauvillier have been shipped out, Dakota Joshua is a pending UFA and Ilya Mikheyev regressed in his first season back from a torn ACL. Vancouver therefore enters the offseason with a major shortage of high-end scoring talent on the left flank.

Pius Suter is a handy Swiss Army knife who can play a complementary role in any top-nine spot. It’s concerning, however, that he’s currently the club’s No.1 left winger.

Joshua will be an intriguing decision for the Canucks this summer. His size, physicality, scoring touch, wall work, forechecking and penalty killing make him a uniquely strong stylistic fit under Rick Tocchet. The cost of his next contract could be prohibitive though, and Vancouver has to be mindful that he scored on 21.4 percent of his shots this past season.

This is where the Canucks’ front office may need to “find the next Dakota Joshua” as Patrik Allvin himself put it at end-of-season media availabilities.

Höglander must continue establishing himself as a consistent middle-six piece. He unquestionably has the offensive talent for it — scoring all 24 of his goals at five-on-five — and is one of the team’s best value contracts for 2024-25 at a $1.1 million rate. But we can’t overlook that Höglander played on the fourth line for most of the first half of the season, had an ineffective playoffs and only averaged 12:06 per game during the regular season — he still has work to do to earn a bigger role.

Mikheyev’s future will be interesting to monitor. The 29-year-old struggled enormously to produce offence once the calendar flipped to 2024. Allvin took accountability for how the roster’s lack of top-six wingers continually forced Mikheyev into an elevated offensive role. He’s inefficient value for his $4.75 million cap hit.  Will the Canucks explore options to ship out his deal? Allvin expressed confidence that Mikheyev will bounce back next season as he puts his ACL injury further in the rearview mirror, so the Canucks may also elect to give him another shot.

Further down the chart, Phil Di Giuseppe is under contract and will return as a depth forward. After a cup of coffee in the NHL this season, we’ll see if 23-year-old Arshdeep Bains can have a big summer and push to make the Canucks’ roster on a more regular basis.

Vancouver has depth on the left wing, but there’s a clear need for a top-of-the-lineup scorer.

With J.T. Miller and Elias Pettersson , the Canucks boast one of the NHL’s best one-two punches down the middle. There are question marks at the No.3 and No.4 centre spots, however.

Elias Lindholm played a key role in the playoffs, but he is a pending UFA. When you weigh the projected cost of his next contract, his declining offensive numbers this season and the team’s more urgent needs on the backend and wings, Lindholm may be a luxury the Canucks can’t afford.

What will Vancouver do at 3C if Lindholm doesn’t return? There are only four UFA centres besides Lindholm ( Alex Wennberg , Sean Monahan , Max Domi , Jack Roslovic ) who scored more than 30 points this season. And even among that group, Domi and Roslovic don’t have the defensive chops to be an ideal fit, so it’s clear the free-agent market lacks appealing options.

The Canucks could always shift Suter back to centre as a fallback plan. He was initially signed last summer to be the Canucks’ third-line pivot and it may be easier to find an effective, bargain left winger than an affordable top-nine centre. Don’t forget that Suter had a terrific run centring a line with Joshua and Conor Garland (controlling 58.7 percent of scoring chances and outscoring opponents 6-2 at five-on-five) before his injury forced Teddy Blueger to elevate into that role.

Speaking of Blueger, it feels sensible for the Canucks to explore an extension, especially if Lindholm departs. He was critical to the penalty-kill turnaround and is qualified to play 3C in a pinch in case of injuries.

Nils Åman can log NHL minutes here and there, but he doesn’t look ready for an everyday 4C role yet. The biggest concern is that he’s a career 40 percent face-off man in the NHL. That needs to improve dramatically before he can be considered a trustworthy fourth-line centre on a team with contention aspirations.

Vancouver is better stocked on the right wing than the left, but this is still a group that needs reinforcements.

Brock Boeser had a terrific year as a top-line winger on Miller’s line. He scored 40 goals and was the Canucks’ only winger to eclipse the 50-point mark. Conor Garland finally found a comfortable fit in 2023-24. He may not put up huge point totals, but he is an indispensable play-driving engine for the middle six.

There’s a huge drop-off after Garland; this is where the Canucks could use another productive top-nine winger.

Vancouver’s cap crunch will give Vasily Podkolzin a golden opportunity to make the team out of training camp. He turns 23 this summer and though his underwhelming NHL/AHL point totals mean it’s unlikely he’ll develop into a top-nine winger, there’s still a scenario where he can carve out a role as a physical energy forward.

Sam Lafferty and Linus Karlsson don’t have contracts for next season, so whether it’s re-signing those two or looking elsewhere, the Canucks will need to find some cheap depth, too.

The Canucks have a solid foundation at left defence, but also have a couple of notable pending UFAs.

Quinn Hughes is one of the best defencemen on the planet and he’ll continue to drive the bus.

Behind him, Carson Soucy had a solid debut season in blue and green. Soucy’s positioning, IQ and rush defence all translated seamlessly to a second-pair role. He moved the puck with improved poise during the regular season, although it became more of a challenge in the playoffs. Vancouver can roll into next season confidently with Soucy as the No.2 left-shot defender, although in a perfect world, the Canucks would find an upgraded partner for him.

Despite being the No.3 left defenceman on paper, Nikita Zadorov averaged top-four minutes during the playoffs. This reflects how Vancouver’s blue line doesn’t have a distinct “third pair.” Hughes drives the top pair; after that, the Canucks have a bottom-four that plays relatively even minutes. With that in mind, whether it’s Zadorov or an external candidate, the Canucks shouldn’t cheap out on their so-called third pair. Whether it’s on the left or right, Vancouver is best situated with a No.4 or 5 type defender anchoring the bottom pair.

Ian Cole played steady hockey for most of the year, even though he struggled in Round 2 of the playoffs. The Canucks can’t afford to pay him $3 million again, so they’ll need to fill a depth blue line spot at a cheaper rate.

The right side of the Vancouver blue line has been a headache for most of the past decade. That’s likely to continue this summer. Among Vancouver’s right-handed defenders, only two players — NHL depth defender Noah Juulsen and farmhand Christian Felton — are signed to standard player contracts for next year

Filip Hronek is the biggest domino here, and his situation is highly complicated. An arbitration-eligible restricted free agent, Hronek is going to have an extraordinarily strong case to earn at least a $2 million raise, at the absolute minimum, above the $4.4 million cap hit he carried this past season on a one-year award.

The club would prefer to sign their top pair right-handed defender, a signature acquisition for current Canucks management, to a long-term deal. It’s difficult to see how any agreement with Hronek is going to be an efficient one, however, given the statistics he compiled and his strong bargaining position.

Pending unrestricted free agent Tyler Myers just put together his best Canucks campaign at the age of 34. The veteran, 6-foot-7 defender is motivated to remain in Vancouver, and both sides seem to be optimistic there’s a deal to be struck.

Juulsen performed at the level of an everyday-calibre NHL defender last season, and seems poised to get that opportunity next season given the need for Vancouver to invest their salary-cap resources elsewhere on the roster.

Mark Friedman provided solid, versatile depth but was used sparingly down the stretch.

The Canucks nearly used Cole McWard in a top-pair role to open last season, deciding to take an alternate course very late in training camp. His first professional season in the American League wasn’t lights out, but the 10.2(c) black hole restricted free agent seems like a strong dark horse candidate to play meaningful NHL minutes.

Star netminder Thatcher Demko , a 2023-24 Vezina nominee, missed most of the postseason due to injury. One of the most dominant puck stoppers in the league when he’s in the net, Demko will turn 29 next season and has still never held down a workhorse starter’s workload and made it through an entire NHL campaign healthy.

At some point, the club is going to need to be more disciplined about building a plan to limit Demko’s regular season workload more rigorously, with an eye on making sure he’s healthy and able to steal games in late May and early June.

Casey DeSmith was a reliable option for Vancouver this past season, but appears to be on his way out after he lost the net — due to a minor injury — to Arturs Silovs in the postseason.

Silovs will need a new contract following some exceptional work against the Nashville Predators and Edmonton Oilers. The athletic, precocious netminder will be waiver exempt next season, but the Canucks seem intent on utilizing him as a full-time backup and Silovs is clearly ready and eager to test himself as a full-time option at the NHL level.

Nikita Tolopilo impressed Canucks brass in his first North American season, and seems poised to be Abbotsford’s primary starter.

Entering the final year of his contract, Tucker Poolman ’s $2.5 million appears likely to spend one more season on Long-Term Injured Reserve (LTI).

With Poolman likely to remain on LTI for the duration of the 2024-25 campaign, Vancouver will be unable to toll salary cap space daily next season. The Canucks would love whatever extra flexibility they could gain, but don’t seem to be willing to add sweeteners to a trade package to spare themselves the administrative headache of being in LTI for yet another year.
