DOUBLE DOME SAPPHIRE BEZEL & CRYSTAL

The unidirectional rotating bezel is characterized by its luxurious finishes. It is crafted from scratch-resistant, slightly domed sapphire, requiring a much more sophisticated and time-consuming manufacturing process. The bezel is completed by an insert with a minimalist 0-60 graduation and a luminescent marker at noon. This collector's timepiece is also equipped with a high-quality double-domed sapphire crystal 2.20 mm high, offering better readability, increased resistance and a resolutely vintage appearance.

YACHTINGRAF ICONIC DIAL

The dial takes inspiration from the aesthetic codes of the 1970’s Yachtingraf iconic model. It features a sunray black finish with applied markers coated with Super-LumiNova and a colorful Maréographe register reminiscent of the regatta-style Yachtingraf vintage model completed with a tides indicator in the form of a small hand gracefully decorated with YEMA’s logo. The 60-second tourbillon boasts a mesmerizing kinetic spectacle for the wearer as it beats and turns against the partially open dial.

STEEL/BRONZE CASE & SAPPHIRE DISPLAY CASEBACK

The case design combines both sportiness and elegance while ensuring a 10 BAR water resistance. Available in steel or bronze, it features different finishes with vertical brushing and polished beveled lugs and a circular brushed bezel. With a 42.5mm contained diameter and a 12.3mm thickness (14.5mm including the double-domed sapphire crystal), it offers balanced proportions for such a timepiece. The 20mm lug allows a wide choice of bracelets. The transparent exhibition caseback reveals the beating heart, it shows off the distinctive architecture of the CMM.30 tourbillon caliber creating a fascinating experience for the true enthusiast. The caseback outer ring is engraved with a unique Limited Edition number (XX/75) and a serial number (XXX-XXX).

FKM VITON® RUBBER  BRACELET

Made from premium quality FKM Viton® rubber, providing utmost durability while remaining easily pliable, comfortable, dust repelling and highly resistant to tearing. The elegant 316L Stainless Steel folding clasp, available in brushed steel and IP bronze, adds style and comfort.

TOURBILLON CALIBER

Invented by French horologist Abraham-Louis Breguet in 1795, the tourbillon is an advanced regulating organ present in certain high-end mechanical watches, intended to improve the precision of timepieces. It consists of a rotating cage containing the balance wheel and its hairspring, the escape wheel, the lever and the second wheel which drives it. The cage rotates 360 degrees every 60 seconds, which counteracts the effects of gravity and reduces any positional errors of accuracy. The tourbillon embodies watchmaking know-how, only a few Manufactures master the creation of this caliber masterpiece.

MARÉOGRAPHE  COMPLICATION

The Maréographe consists of a tide complication placed in an elegant register. To make this magnificent phenomenon of nature visible, an elegant small hand indicates high and low tides by making gradual half-revolutions every 6h 12m 7.89s (change from high tide to low tide and vice versa) and a full revolution every 12h 25m 15.79s.

For Olivier Mory, astronomy is a family passion that spans several generations, so for him it was natural to work on a complication linked to the movement of the stars, in this case lunar time and terrestrial tides. The Earth revolves around the Sun by rotating on its own axis. The duration of this rotation on itself is the average day (24 hours). The Moon orbits the Earth in 29.54 days in the same direction as the Earth rotates. The Moon gets a little ahead of the Earth each day, the duration of the Lunar Day is 24 hours 50 minutes 31 seconds. The tidal cycles are conditioned by the gravitational forces exerted by the Moon during its rotation around the Earth. By integrating the lunar time on a mechanical watch then by synchronizing the tides to local time, this makes possible to display local tides with rigorous accuracy

LOCAL PRODUCTION

Over the past few years, YEMA has made significant investments aimed at insourcing a good part of its production and constantly improving the quality of its manufacturing processes by implementing latest equipment as well as expanding and modernising its workshops and production lines.

In addition, YEMA now works with new local partners in France and Switzerland within a range of 72km of its workshops, to secure a more responsible and higher quality production.

Movement Components

All tourbillon movement components, including the watch case, dial, and hands, are manufactured in France and Switzerland within a range of 72km from Morteau by recognized craftsman in fine watchmaking. The caliber bridges and mainplates are manufactured in YEMA’s workshops in Morteau where final assembly of all components takes place.

Yema Takes to the Land, Air, and Sea with their New Urban Sport Collection

The concept of “air”, “sea”, “land” watches continues to capture the imagination of enthusiasts. Some even build collections of watches that cover each base. The idea stems from the focused tool watches of yesteryear that were deliberate and intentional in their design languages in order to accomplish very specific goals. Yema leans into this idea in introducing a new trio of watches under their Urban Sport moniker. Within the new line, each watch tackles one component of air, sea, and land, with the Flygraf, Yachtingraf, and Rallygraf, respectively.

The Flygraf dominates the air and is the punchiest of all three in color scheme. It is marked with an airplane icon at six o’clock and features a combination of inner and outer multifunction bezels for calculating speed, fuel, and other conversions. It has thicker, more legible hands befitting of a pilot’s watch and a brushed black dial designed to pay homage to vintage airplane fuselages. The second hand in particular is a bright orange that matches the inner bezel for maximum contrast. As a whole, the dial is cleaner and simpler, and the hour markers are slightly rounded.

The Yachtingraf is designed for, you guessed it, yachting. With a gradient dial and thinner hands filled with cream lume, it is the most overtly vintage-inspired of the three. The Yachtingraf has, unsurprisingly, a bi-direcitonal graduated bezel with special 15-minute markings to signal regatta race starts. Its second hand is in silver and features an enlarged arrow – not unlike some GMT hands. The inner chapter ring and hour and minute markers are reminiscent of mid-century divers. If you didn’t know better you could have guessed this was a new old stock diver from the 60s or 70s.

The Rallygraf was designed for racing in case the twin checkered flags on the dial didn’t make it obvious. This is a callback to the Yema Rallygraf watches of the 1970s, which also featured the same image. Here, a bi-directional tachymeter bezel in conjunction with a fixed reference inner bezel allows for speed calculations. This watch in particular is nearly monochrome – the only pop of color is the red second hand. The blocky hour markers and stark white lume on the hour and minute hands make for a busier, though not clumsy, dial layout.

All three watches feature the automatically-winding YEMA2000 caliber providing a daily accuracy of +/- 10 seconds under 42 hours of power reserve. All the cases are thoughtfully finished with a combination of brushed topsides and polished bevels. Water resistance is 100m. The Urban Sport line can be configured on model-specific straps, a $829 proposition, while on the stainless steel bracelet they are $890. An overview of sailing regatta watches.

The only French brand in this regatta-yachttimer overview is Yema. Founded in 1948 in Besançon (Doubs) by Henry Louis Belmont, the company distinguished itself in the very beginning by creating the first automatic chronometers manufactured entirely in France. The brand became fairly popular in France in the 1960’s and 1970’s with both consumer and military sales, including the watches related to the French space missions!

On March 3, 1967  Henry L. Blum of Montres Yema S.A. filed a patent for a ‘Watch for Yachting and Underwater use’ . You can download the complete Swiss patent (CH 483.047) as a PDF here , or here if you prefer English (USA 3,427,800).

This resulted in the introduction of the Yema Yachtingraf   in 1966. All together 6 different models (7 if you count type 6 in standard or jumbo case as two) of the Yachtingraf  were sold between 1966 and 1970. Type 1 (Valjoux 92), type 2 ( Valjoux 7733 or 7734) and type 3 (Valjoux 7734 with date) have a subdial counting the seconds at 9 o’clock, and an oversized 30 minutes subdial at 3 o’clock, divided into 6 differently coloured segments representing 5 minutes each.

Type 4 and 5, the Yachtingraf Croisière models, have an extra third subdial at 6 o’clock with a 12 hour register. By means of a red cross over this subdial it counts double, up to 24 hours. Type 6 has an indicator disk underneath the dial, for an optimum countdown.

• Case size: either normal case Ø 39 mm or jumbo size Ø 44 mm.
• Year: 1970.

The Yema Yachtingraf Régate was available in two different case sizes, the first one with the black logo at 6 o’clock measuring Ø 39 mm and with a tachymeter along the outer edge of the dial, and a second version with the blue logo at 6 o’clock measuring Ø 44 mm. The last one is also referred to as Régate – Jumbo.

How the countdown function works:

Definitely type 6 is the most interesting one. It has a 15 minutes register at 3 o’clock, and a smal indicator disk that rotates under a special cut-out in the dial. The indicator disk moves every 30 seconds, jumping half a minute further to the start of the race.

The Yema Yachtingraf Régate has the crown to set the time at 3 o’clock and two pushers for the countdown function. One pusher at 2 o’clock for start/stop, and one pusher at 4 o’clock for reset.

After a reset the countdown subdial shows 1-2-3-4-5 and red in the 6th small window. When the chronograph is activated at the first gunshot the countdown starts and the big white sweep hand is set in motion clockwise. After 30 seconds the indicator disk moves half a minute, and so it does again after 60 seconds, now showing 0-1-2-3-4. A slide bar shows the first minute in blue. After the first 5 minutes of the countdown, when the second gunshot is fired, the 6th window in the dial takes over the countdown: 5 more minutes to go.

Again one minute later, with another 4 more minutes to go, the first window is showing red. Three minutes later, only 1 more minute to go, and 4 windows showing red. Then, as the final gunshot sounds, all 5 windows are red and the 6th window shows 0. Off you go!

Variations:

The Yema Yachtingraf’s are unmistakable recognizable by their big colorful minutes countdown subdial, which is also well described in the patent listed above. And although they are not related to Yema in any way, several smaller watch brands have used the same subdial for a Yachting version of their watch. Probably with a license by Yema for the dial layout. The only exeption is the brand Le Jour, which was actually the North American rebranded distributer for Yema in the 1970’s and 1980’s. In the mid 1970’s the first quartz movements were introduced, and also Yema decided to invest heavily in the research en development of new models with a quartz movement. This resulted among others in the second (quartz) generation of the Yema Yachtingraf   in 1977.

In 1982 John Henry Belmont Jr. takes over as CEO of Yema from his father. But he has other plans with the company, and decided to sell Yema in 1988 to the Japanese Seiko Watch Corporation. In 1995 Yema became a subsidiary to the Hattori-Seiko group under the name Yema S.A. It’s obvious that many of the Seiko movements are used in a Yema watch during that period.

In 1992 Yema is sponsoring the French team with skipper and helmsman Marc Pajot as competitor fort her America’s Cup (with yacht Ville de Paris).  For that occasion Yema launches the  America’s Cup France , with a Seiko 8M35 quartz regatta movement.

In 2004 the Yema brand is purchased by its CEO Louis Eric Beckensteiner, with financial help of the French Montres Ambre, a watchmaking and jewelry company. That makes Yema a 100% French watch brand again, with the name being changed into ‘Yema Horlogère Maison Francaise 1948’.

For their 70th anniversary Yema announces in 2018 the Heritage collection, to pay tribute to the brand’s most iconic timepieces: a Superman, a Rallygraf, a Yachtingraf and a Flygraf. The Yema Yachtingraf Heritage is an almost identical copy of the Yachtingraf Crossière (type 5) from 1969. The first 1948 watches will be numbered.

The New Yema Urban Sport Trilogy Brings Back Three of the Brand’s Icons

The flygraf, rallygraf and yachtingraf names are back with accessible prices and 1980s-inspired cases..

While the Superman, a skindiver piece , is by far the most emblematic model of French watchmaking brand Yema , three other names might ring a bell to some enthusiasts. All designed as professional instruments in the late 1960s or early 1970s, the Flygraf (pilot’s watch), Rallygraf (driver’s watch) and Yachtingraf (regatta watch) are now deeply rooted in Yema’s collection and were recently re-edited. But today, while sticking to the same names, Yema offers something different: a trilogy of accessible sports watches all built around the same technical base, yet with significant differences regarding the display to pay tribute to the vintage Flygraf, Rallygraf and Yachtingraf. Let’s have a look at the new Yema Urban Sport Trilogy.

Let’s first go back in time… Yema was founded in 1948 by Henry Louis Belmont, a trained watchmaker who graduated from the Ecole Nationale d’Horlogerie de Besançon (National School of Watchmaking of Besançon) in the French Jura, near the Swiss border. A pioneer in the industrialisation of watchmaking in France, the brand grew to become, in the mid-1960s, the largest exporter of timepieces in the country. Success came mainly from one watch, the Superman, a skindiver launched in 1963 . Later, other important models were created, most of them answering specific professional needs – alongside, of course, classic collections for daily wear.

Among dozens of sports watches, three names have gained particular fame. All designed with a dedicated mission, the original versions of these watches are now part of the most collectable items of the brand. Named Flygraf, Rallygraf and Yachtingraf, they were dedicated to pilots, rally drivers and regatta sailors, respectively. They were mostly built around a chronograph movement with a display incorporating useful elements such as a navigation slide rule, a tachymeter scale or a regatta countdown timer. Today, these three models are back in the collection but with different duties than the originals. With the Urban Sport Trilogy, Yema wants to offer a powerful design with dedicated functions but at an accessible price. And that meant getting rid of the chronograph function to focus solely on the displays and bezels.

All three watches in the Yema Urban Sport Trilogy, meaning the new Flygraf, Rallygraf and Yachtingraf, are built around the same technical architecture, starting with a case that is inspired by one of the brand’s 1980s sports watches. This angular and barrel-shaped case can’t hide a certain “luxury sports watch” vibe but offers something sportier than, for instance, Yema’s Urban Traveller collection – this one was clearly intended to fight in the sporty-chic integrated bracelet market.

Sharper, more angular and more robust overall, the case used for this trilogy has a cool retro vibe and great proportions. At 39mm in diameter, 11.70mm in thickness and 47mm in length, its proportions are as appealing as they are comfortable. The flat top surface is home to a raised rotating bezel, framing a flat sapphire crystal. The crown is large, and despite being a classic push-pull construction, water-resistance is rated at a comfortable 100m – due mainly to the solid steel screwed back. The case seems nicely finished with a combination of vertically brushed flat surfaces and polished bevels.

With identical cases, you might wonder what differentiates the Rallygraf from a Flygraf or a Yachtingraf. Well, it all comes down to the bezel inserts, inner flanges and dials. All three models have a distinct personality, harking back to the origins of their respective ancestors. The Rallygraf, originally a watch dedicated to automobile racing enthusiasts, has a bidirectional bezel with a tachymeter scale printed on a black aluminium insert. The dial continues in the same vein with a white-on-black racing theme, including checkered flags at 6 o’clock and squarish markers and hands. The red seconds hand accentuates the racing side of the model.

With its blue dial, the Yachtingraf doesn’t hide its nautical origins. This discreet member of the Urban Sport Trilogy comes with a matte blue stepped dial, silvered hands and applied markers. The inner flange hosts a classic seconds track, and the central seconds hand has a nice open-tip arrow design. What makes this version unique is the aluminium insert of the bidirectional bezel with its 15-minute regatta countdown scale. It works in tandem with the minute hand and allows precise countdown timings for regatta-style races.

The final model in Yema’s Urban Sport Trilogy is named Flygraf and is dedicated to pilots. Its brushed black dial offers great contrast with the white hands and applied makers. Alongside the bold yellow accents, the main feature of this model is its rotating bezel that, together with the inner flange, allows for a multitude of in-flight calculations – average speed, average fuel consumption of an aircraft, or even converting nautical miles to miles, and miles to kilometres.

All three models are powered by the brand’s proprietary Yema2000 calibre, an alternative to ETA and Sellita movements, which was conceived in France and is assembled in the French Jura (in Morteau). Running at a 4Hz frequency, it boasts 42h of power reserve and is regulated in 4 positions to a precision of -/+ 10 seconds/day. The version used here is the no-date one.

The Flygraf, Rallygraf and Yachtingraf are presented on a 9-link stainless steel bracelet with a double security folding clasp and a design inspired by the 1980s or a leather strap with a steel pin buckle (black leather for the Flygraf, blue leather for the Yachtingraf and perforated brown leather for the Rallygraf). Either way, the 20mm lug width will offer a lot of possibilities.

All watches of this Trilogy are now available for order at EUR 829 on a leather strap and EUR 890 on a steel bracelet. There is also a 10-piece limited collector’s case containing all three models ( EUR 2,669 ). For more details and orders, please visit yema.com .

I’ve always had a soft spot for the Yema brand however I’ve always been under the impression that reviews of the company/quality have been a bit hit and miss?

Moscow missile plant ablaze in apparent drone attack

Tomilinsky Electronic Plant research and production enterprise in Lyubertsy, Moscow Oblast, is reportedly ablaze after a drone attack on Sep. 1, according to our sister publication, Ukrainska Pravda .

The Tomilinsky plant is under sanctions by the Ukrainian government as it manufactures electronics for Russian missile systems.

The plant was attacked in an operation directed by Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR), who believe they have achieved their aim, a well-informed source told Ukrainska Pravda.

The HUR has thus far refused to publicly confirm or deny its involvement. The agency’s spokesman, Andriy Yusov, commented that Russian state media had issued "a mountain" of lies about the attack and said that "cotton has really blossomed" at the plant in Lyubertsy on Friday.

Explosions in Russia or Russian-held territory far behind the frontlines are popularly referred to in Ukraine as “bavovna”, or “cotton” in English.

Drones tried to attack the Russian capital on Sept. 1 , said Moscow mayor Serhiy Sobyanin, adding that one drone was allegedly shot down near Lyubertsy.
