Lurssen's Vision of the Future: 98m Emission-Free ALICE

By Jenna Mehdi

Having long been at the forefront of build and innovation in the large motor yacht sector, Lurssen’s history of leading by example dates back to 1886, when the yard delivered the world’s first motorboat together with Gottlieb Daimler. Now, Lurssen has unveiled its vision for the future of superyachting: and it takes the form of the 98m climate-neutral concept ALICE.

Typically very discreet when it comes to clients and designs, Lurssen’s latest outspoken concept acknowledges the need to take assertive steps when it comes to securing the future of the superyacht industry. The yard, who is now building the world’s first hydrogen fuel cell for a ‘pioneering and driven client’, will make no secret of its sustainable ambitions in Superyachts.com’s upcoming documentary series ‘Top 100: Building Green Giants’.

Described as “a fraction of reality in movement”, ALICE presents an utopian vision of design married with real, climate-driven innovation. The yacht’s decks feature a labyrinth of parks and ponds, driving a harmonic reunion with nature that is bolstered by ALICE’s organically farmed wood decking and emission-free fuel cell propulsion.

“A lot of owners say that they don’t really use the main salon,” explained Lurssen’s exterior designer Jim Sluijter, “What you end up with is a boat with a really long sheerline, no main deck, and everything else happens above it. ALICE has an exterior deck of about 100m long, where you can have all sorts of exterior activities.”

Based on hydrogen reformed from green methanol, ALICE’s fuel cells are able to generate electrical energy to replace the conventional diesel generators of a yacht. If higher speed and energy demand is required, an additional methanol engine may be added.

Energy saving technology such as waste heat recovery systems and mirrored glass windows serve to reduce the load of the air conditioning systems on board. ALICE’s tenders and toys are also all-electric, so there are no diesel engines onboard.

The yacht’s interior design, tastefully put together by Dasha Moranova Designs, makes no compromise on luxury and sophistication in its effort to present a more conscious vision of the future.

More than just a concept, ALICE is a fully-fledged vision of the future so radically progressive and yet perfectly in reach. For more information on how Lurssen is innovating beyond the pale to achieve an emission-free future, stay tuned for Superyachts.com's upcoming Top 100 Series 2.

Why Lürssen's ‘Alice’ is more than a concept

We speak to jim sluijter, lead exterior designer at lürssen, about ‘alice’ and the need for ‘conceptual concepts' ….

Image for article Why Lürssen's ‘Alice’ is more than a concept

Before ‘Alice’, Lürssen hadn’t released a superyacht concept for over a decade, and they never had any intention of creating one either. The idea blossomed through organic and somewhat comical circumstances. When Lürssens head of marketing and communication learned that ‘Miniatur Wunderland’, a tourist attraction showcasing small scale models, were going to build a miniature model of Monaco, a lightbulb flickered on. Lürssen decided to contact the people at Miniatur Wunderland and tell them they would build them a mini superyacht for mini Monaco.

Jim Sluijter, the lead exterior designer at Lürssen, was given the brief - ‘Design a superyacht for Monaco harbour that will be so outrageous every tourist in wunderland will want to take a photo of it’. It needed to have the perfect balance of wow factor and realism. And it also needed to be as sustainable as possible.

Sluijter ended up designing a 98 metre methanol powered motor yacht with a raised superstructure, no saloon, a winding river pool and a tennis court. To be honest, it does sound slightly ridiculous, however, Sluijter argues that it is well within the realm of possibilities. Although he didn't have to, he even went as far as to design all the interior cabin spaces and crew areas, just to prove to himself it was feasible. He wanted to make sure the design acted as a statement to the rest of the market, showcasing what Lürssen are all about.

lurssen yacht alice

In a way, Alice is Lürssens way of dictating their future narrative, and providing a beacon of reason and inspiration in a chaotic media landscape. In recent years publications operating in the luxury asset industry have caught on to the fact that people absolutely love concept superyachts. Which has ultimately led to ridiculous and outlandish superyacht concepts becoming classic clickbait material. It’s something of a pet peeve for designers, as Sluijter reveals,

“I have a little WhatsApp group with some other designers. Every time some crazy concept gets posted online we share it in the chat and we all get really frustrated. We're like, Oh, look at this guy. That's not even remotely possible.”

Sluijter continues, “These crazy concepts that these aspiring designers publish, their intention is probably to get their name out there and get some exposure, right? And then the media, they publish it because they want to get more clicks and likes.” Unfortunately though, most concepts are tarnished with the same brush by the media. And despite all the work that goes into the project, that’s not usually what gets reported on, instead it is more likely to be lumped together in a ‘listicle’ headlined ‘craziest future superyacht concepts’.

The concept becomes even more impressive when the designer takes you through the process. If you look along the hull, you’ll notice that Alice retains tradition by having the same classic Lürssen lines that Jon Bannenberg used for ‘Limitless’ and ‘Rising Sun’ almost twenty years ago. While the floating superstructure takes inspiration from the iconic Marina Bay Sands skyscraper in Singapore, the idea for the superstructure also came about because Sluijter acknowledged the fact that owners love to sit outside, but they don’t like to sit in the sun. So with this design, the deck space is extended and optimised, while the superstructure acts as a natural shade. Sluijter decided not to add a saloon because he knew that many owners hardly ever use that area. “That was mainly just from talking to clients and getting their opinions and ideas. It’s also just from experience. We've done questionnaires with clients and stuff like that but it feels like that's the general impression.”

lurssen yacht alice

Much of the design is driven by a sense of ecological responsibility. Lürssen wanted to transform the deck space by introducing the idea of parks and ponds onboard. They even imagined the teak being replaced by fast-growing and lightweight organically farmed wood. Alice has the full intention of being climate-neutral with emission-free fuel cells generating electrical energy based on hydrogen reformed from green methanol. The fuel cell replaces the conventional diesel generators on board. For higher speed and energy demands, an additional methanol engine is added. Other energy saving technologies include waste heat recovery utilisations, recovering heat emissions for use within the HVAC system, for both heating and cooling-purposes. This is complemented by mirrored glass windows around the owner’s deck where reflecting the heat serves for thermal insulation and reduces energy load of the air conditioning systems.

The level of thought and detail that has gone into Alice really is unique, and Sluijter believes that detail is what makes concepts and future thinking projects truly valuable, “All of the technology and engineering on Alice has been really thought through.” Sluijter explains, “But there's a lot of concepts out there that just have a press release that says, fuel cells, length, gross tonnage, but you know that it's just a designer who’s drawn something and rendered it. But there's nothing behind it. And still, journalists will create an article with all of this loose information that is based on nothing.”

Sluijter added, “With other designers or shipyards, for them, a concept might be something that they do every year. So whatever they do next year, the concept that they did this year is already in the past. But Alice will be there and it will be in Miniatur Wunderland for the next 15 years for people to look at. So it has to be something that is really for the future because it's going to be there for the next 15 years or 20 years for people to look at.”

lurssen yacht alice

Despite the frustration with clickbait concepts, it feels harsh to punish the responsible designer who has taken the initiative to put a concept together and try and get his or her name out. But on the other hand it's up to the media to have better judgement and decide what is worthy of publication. Sluijter revealed that it does have an adverse affect on business,

“Sometimes potential clients will see clickbait circulating in the media and they will ask us if a design feature is possible, and when we say no, that’s obviously not an ideal situation. I guess that shows that the industry needs to educate more and the media need to be more selective.”

Sluijter also pointed out that perhaps yacht design could be more like architecture, where people can become accredited and approved yacht designers, rather than just being anyone who can draw. An independent label of sorts that acknowledged a certain level of know-how or experience would mean only certain people are allowed to call themselves yacht designers.

Despite all the gripes and frustrations, it is incredibly refreshing to see a young designer at a major shipyard address a real problem with the industry. What would make Alice even more successful, would be if it inspired other shipyards to do the same. Alice is not just a piece of advertising or marketing. It’s Lürssen transcending the real world (and the Miniatur Wunderland world) with something that shows the rest of the market just how good they really are.

The natural world comes aboard with the ponds and park-like surroundings designed for the foredeck, while the interior is composed of living walls that create its own ecosystem, scenting the air with fresh and natural fragrance. The traditional teak decking is replaced by fast-growing, organically farmed wood that meets the same high-quality standards for performance and finish that Lürssen clients always expect.

M/Y ALICE is more than just about appearances: Her engineering results in carbon neutrality by using emission-free fuel cells that generate electrical energy through hydrogen reformed from green methanol. These fuel cells replace conventional diesel generators and when a higher speed of greater energy is required, an additional methanol engine comes into play.

This will be a significant evolution on the current technology, which has come on leaps and bounds when compared to just a decade ago. The fuel cell technology of the first Lürssen luxury yacht will make it possible to anchor emission-free for 15 days  or cruise 1,000 nautical miles at an economical speed.

For superyacht ALICE, on-board energy efficiency is just as vital as environmental sustainability, and to achieve this end waste heat is recovered using the HVAC system and reused for heating and cooling purposes. Mirrored glass windows surrounding the Owner’s deck also serve this purpose, providing thermal insulation and reducing reliance on the air conditioning systems.

Lürssen Yachts has pulled the wraps off a new concept equipped with fuel cell technology.  Alice , as this concept has been dubbed, gives a demonstration of Lürssen’s future capabilities, as they develop the fuel-cell technology that they unveiled earlier this year.

Alice yacht exterior design

What makes Alice special is her promise to be “climate-neutral” (from the point of delivery). She will not only harbour technologies that allow for 15 day stints at anchor emission free, but when she’s slowly cruising,  Alice  benefits from emission-free fuel cells which generate electric energy based on hydrogen reformed from green methanol, which is said to provide up to 1,000 nautical miles emission free.

Alice yacht interior design

Her ecological heart spans beyond propulsion as Lürssen has penned energy saving technologies throughout her design. Her HVAC system, for instance, has been designed to reduce and recover waste heat which is then used for onboard climate control. To compliment this further, Lürssen has styled her with mirrored glass windows around the owner’s deck that not only provide privacy, but which act as thermal insulation – another energy reduction device.

Alice yacht interior design

As befit any Lürssen build, Alice promises stateliness and an astounding interior design. Her styling will flaunt the class and comfort expected onboard a German build, without compromising her ecological commitment. She’ll be kitted out in sustainably sourced decking materials in lieu of teak, and the onboard feel as a whole is said to offer a ‘unique ecosystem’.

Alice yacht interior design

Alice  can be read as a roadmap for Lürssen’s future builds and has the potential to be era defining for the shipbuilder.

Alice yacht exterior design

In terms of specifications,  Alice  has a length of 98 metres which is intersected by a very generous 17 metre beam. Her exterior styling comes from the drawing boards of her builder, Lürrsen, while her interior has been entrusted to Dasha Moranova Designs.

Alice yacht exterior design

The concept comes at a time when interest in ecologically less-impactful designs are the focus for the industry. While fuel-cell technology may be a significant step in the right direction, the construction process of creating a superyacht will remain a carbon creating industry.

Designed by Italian firm Nuvolari Lenard, Kismet 2.0 is 88 feet longer than its predecessor and weighs twice as much. The behemoth has an interior volume of 5,500 GT, in fact. Even at such a size, Kismet showcases harmonious proportions and sleek, elegant lines. The mast and bow, for instance, were modeled after a leaping jaguar and to ensure a distinctive profile.

Kismet Superyacht

Khan once again enlisted U.K. studio Reymond Langton Design to bring the interior to life. The billionaire is known to have very specific and clearly quite lavish taste. He requested the interior of the original Kismet reflect a “Champagne and caviar” theme, for example. The second Kismet is equally extravagant. A two-level open-plan entrance area with sweeping video walls leads to stylish living quarters that span some six decks.

The layout includes between eight and nine cabins for up to 12 guests and cabins for 36 crew. In addition, the owner’s suite comprises a spacious stateroom, dual bathrooms, two dressing rooms, and a private terrace with a Jacuzzi. Above, the owner’s office offers panoramic views, a conference table for up to six, and a dedicated pantry.

“The owner’s brief was challenging,” Peter Lürßen, managing director of Lürssen, said in a statement. “However, we believe that with our technical expertise, we have fulfilled the owner’s wish and vision for a yacht that will still be timeless and ahead of its time for many years to come.”

The best part? Kismet will be available for the 2024 charter season for €3 million (roughly $3.3 million) a week. Contact the Cecil Wright team for more information on availability, charter rates, and cruising locations.

122m Lurssen Kismet (previously Project Jag) on sea trials in Germany

Lürssen's 122m superyacht Kismet delivered

The 122-metre Lürssen superyacht Kismet has been delivered following successful sea trials off the coast of Kiel, Germany. According to BOATPro , her final destination is Troon, Scotland.

Previously known as Project Jag, Kismet was commissioned by repeat Lürssen client Shahid Khan, who previously owned the 95.2-metre Lürssen yacht Whisper (formerly Kismet ) . His new yacht reunites him with Reymond Langton Design for the interior, but the exteriors on the new build have been helmed by Nuvolari Lenard .

The delivery news follows the reveal of Kismet 's computer-rendered interiors by her central agency for charter, Cecil Wright . Kismet charters for €3,000,000 per week plus expenses.

Interiors have been described as a "beautiful, bespoke homage to the owner’s lifestyle" by the yard. The renderings show a dramatic theme, with an elaborate staircase that appears to have the same video walls as the original Kismet .  Fireplaces, floor-to-ceiling glass and intricate paint and marble detailing also feature throughout.

Speaking about her entrance on the charter market, Chris Cecil-Wright said: "Having sold the previous Kismet in September last year, we are delighted to be able to continue our relationship with her owner as the central agent for charter for his stunning new vessel."

The charter yacht features accommodation for 12 guests in up to nine cabins. The crew quarters, meanwhile, will accommodate a staff of 40. Other key details include a beam of 17.8 metres, creating "extraordinary volumes" and "sleek and elegant lines", according to the yard.

Standout features include a helipad, beauty salon, spa, sauna, swimming pool, indoor and outdoor cinema, dance floor, gym and elevator. There will also be ample room for a selection of tenders and toys including a sailing dinghy, Sea Bobs, sea scooters, windsurfers and a submarine.

Kismet is one of the largest superyachts under construction in the world . She was sold by Moran Yacht & Ship in 2019, with the brokerage also managing the build throughout construction, including writing the technical specifications and negotiating the interior costs.

According to BOATPro , Lürssen has 12 yachts currently in build or on order. This includes the 107-metre explorer Project Icecap which, once delivered, will rank in the top 30 Lürssen yachts by size. Kismet first hit the water on August 11 at Rendsburg, following the drydock flooding on 10 August.
