THE Emirati Royal Family has ended Roman Abramovich's three-year-reign as owner of the world's biggest yacht.

Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed bin Sultan al-Nahyan, the President of the United Arab Emirates and emir of Abu Dhabi, has been revealed as the owner of Azzam, a 180-metre superyacht so big few berths can accommodate it.

The boat beats Chelsea Football Club owner Abramovich's Eclipse to the top spot in a survey of the world's 100 biggest yachts by just 16.5 metres.

After its sale earlier this year, the identity of Azzam's buyer was not known.

But according to the annual survey in Yachts France magazine, it belongs to the emir, whose half-brother and government colleague, Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed bin Sultan al-Nahyan, is owner of the investment company that acquired Manchester City Football Club.

Azzam was designed by Nauta Yachts and built by Lürssen Yachts, in Bremen, Germany, who called it the "most complex and challenging yacht which has ever been built".

With a top speed of 31 knots, driven by a combination of two gas turbines and two diesel engines, it is the third-fastest yacht in the top 100.

It is reported to have cost between $400 million (£258 million) and $600 million (£387 million) to build, and features a lavish 6,000-square foot salon. Mr Abramovich's boat, though smaller, still has room for two helipads, two swimming pools, a disco and a mini-submarine.

Of the 100 yachts listed by the magazine, 31 were owned by people from the Middle East, 19 by Russians and 17 by Americans. The biggest British-owned yacht was inventor James Dyson's 91-metre Nahlin, ranked 36th.

Mega yacht topaz, one of the greatest luxury kings that cruises oceans.

Meet mega yacht Topaz one of the greatest luxury kings of the oceans, with a length of over 482 feet, the Topaz is among the largest private luxury yachts in the world. It’s owned by billionaire Mansour bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan , Deputy Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and member of the Abu Dhabi royal family.

Mega Yacht Topaz

The stunning yacht excels not only for its monumental size but is also one of the most luxurious and comfortable we have seen (along with Azzam and Lady Moura ) It is equipped with a gym, swimming pool, two hot tubs, a conference room, movie theater and lift, as well as two heliports. Its interior was custom designed by Terence Disdale and the exterior by the renowned team of Tim Heywood Design. The skillful engineers from Lurssen Yachts shipyards in Bremen-Vegesack, Germany were responsible for the construction of this beautiful vessel.

The Topaz has a steel hull with aluminum superstructure and is powered by two Pelstick diesel engines that produce 7,990 hp each. Her cruising speed is 22.9 knots and the maximum speed is estimated to be around 25.5 knots. She also has special stabilizers to ensure comfort on board when the yacht is anchored, especially in rough water.

Mega Yacht Topaz

With a length of over 482 feet, the Topaz is among the largest private luxury yachts in the world .

Since a member of the royal family owns the yacht, its manufacturers and designers have not disclosed details of its interior. However, it is known that Disdale— responsible for the interior design— arranged and furnished it as a “beach house”, a design concept for luxury yachts that favors a relaxed and functional style and offers the experience of sailing without the excessively formal and severe environments of a family mansion.

Disdale placed the Jacuzzis in the aft deck next to the pool, which at night is illuminated with colored light beams through a system of underwater lighting. The eight decks are connected by a lift that provides access to the helicopter and swimming platforms, and to a fully equipped gym with the latest in sports technology.

The mega yacht is also equipped with auxiliary boats that can be reached from both sides of the ship, or through the stern, where there is a terrace and a large deck with stairs to provide access to the water as well as a variety of water toys stored in the hold: jet skis, inflatable boats, a small catamaran… and even a mini-submarine! The spectacular Topaz— with its futuristic styling and functional design— is also one of the most-expensive luxury super yachts: in 2012, its owner Sheikh Mansour paid $527 million for it.  ■

Sheikh Mansour is attending the Champions League final. But does that show how much he cares?

ABU DHABI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES - MARCH 14: Pep Guardiola meets HH Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan at the Presidential Affairs Office in Abu Dhabi on March 14, 2018 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. (Photo by Victoria Haydn/Manchester City FC via Getty Images)

The setting was opulent, marble columns, high ceilings, lots of impossibly large settees and bookcases. Someone opened the door — because when you are a sheikh there is always someone to open the door — and Pep Guardiola went in for a hug with the man who has changed the landscape of English football.

The rest of us have never been allowed to get so close. After nearly 15 years as the owner of Manchester City , it has become absolutely clear that Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan prefers to keep his distance.

Some people, usually non-City fans, view that absence through suspicious eyes. The sheikh, they say, cannot be emotionally invested if he has restricted himself to only one game in Manchester since buying the club. And, yes, it is not an ordinary arrangement.

That, however, was not Guardiola’s impression, visiting Abu Dhabi in 2018 and spending time with a man who is estimated to have a personal fortune of £16.8billion ($20.9bn).

Behind one glass-encased cabinet, the sheikh keeps a replica of the Premier League trophy. In the next cabinet, it is the FA Cup , adorned in City’s light-blue ribbons.

If everything goes according to plan, the Presidential Affairs office will soon display the one they want most of all: the Champions League trophy. That was always the masterplan, since buying the club in 2008 from Thaksin Shinawatra, the former Thailand prime minister who had fled his country on corruption charges.

The sheikh will be at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul when Guardiola’s team will try to round off another year of freewheeling superiority by clinching the treble, and his attendance is breaking a well-established pattern.

He has, after all, never been to any of City’s previous finals, in any competitions. He has never watched them at Wembley, never been to a Manchester derby and never attended any of the title showdowns that have defined the club’s modern history. It just isn’t his thing.

Does it matter that he hasn’t been coming and now is? Should a club owner be present at these occasions? Is it a poor show that a man with his resources chooses not to be there, year after year, when he could fly anywhere in the world by private jet (or even take the super-yacht, Blue, that he bought for a reputed £500million last year and apparently named after his team)?

Many people will answer those questions by saying, yes, why get into the sport if you have no desire to experience, in person, the joys it can bring?

Others will nod cynically and see it as hard evidence that, however it is dressed up, the sheikh’s reasons for buying his way into the Premier League were not about him having the football bug.

Anybody who has followed City’s story since September 1, 2008, will be aware of the argument that, at the heart of everything, the ambition for City’s owners was to use the power of football to enhance what Amnesty International has described as Abu Dhabi’s “deeply tarnished image”.

Those views are so entrenched it is difficult to imagine the sheikh’s presence, or non-presence, would really make any difference at this point.

Nor will it change the fact that, for all the brilliance of Guardiola’s teams, many people find it hard to be overly enthused by City’s success. On the contrary, it might work against City, PR-wise, if the sheikh, or other members of Abu Dhabi’s royal family, started popping up in the directors’ box.

All that can really be said for certain is that, for reasons never officially explained, the sheikh has not attended a City game for nearly 13 years until now.

The last one was a Monday-night fixture — August 23, 2010 — for City’s first home match of a season that finished with them winning the FA Cup to end a 35-year wait for a trophy.

It was a 3-0 defeat of Roy Hodgson’s Liverpool and, to put it into context, it was so long ago that all but two of the players from Roberto Mancini’s starting XI have retired from playing. James Milner was making his debut for City. Gareth Barry scored the opener, Carlos Tevez got the other two and the BBC’s match report describes Adam Johnson’s contribution as “outstanding”.

mansour bin zayed bin sultan al nahyan yacht

That apart, Mansour’s only live experience of watching City in a competitive match came in November 2009, from the royal box at Zayed Sports City, as his team, then managed by Mark Hughes, lost 1-0 in a tour match against the United Arab Emirates national side.

Khaldoon Al Mubarak, City’s chairman, tends to be the face of Abu Dhabi to fans in Manchester, flying in for around a third of their home games. The sheikh does get involved in some of the bigger decisions. Mostly, though, he delegates other Abu Dhabi-based operators such as Simon Pearce, a City director, to oversee the operation.

Speak to people at City and they will say it has never been a problem. The sheikh, they say, watches almost every match at his family residence. City are sensitive to any suggestions that his absence shows a lack of commitment or interest.

Plus, let us not just assume that somebody in his position spends his days congratulating himself on being so extraordinarily rich and never having to work again.

The Gulf News published a profile of the sheikh in March, after his appointment as the UAE’s vice-president, and it was fairly jaw-dropping to see the number of corporations, law authorities, wealth funds, banks, charities and political organisations in which he was the chairman or a leading board member.

Even putting aside, for one moment, his investments in another 50-plus companies — Ferrari, Daimler and Richard Branson’s space tourism programme, Virgin Galactic, among many others — it doesn’t require a LinkedIn page to realise City Football Group (CFG) is a smallish part of a vast portfolio of political and economic responsibilities.

Everybody wanted more: How Jack Grealish lived up to his £100m price tag

Mansour studied English at Santa Barbara College, California, and obtained a bachelor’s degree in international affairs from the United Arab Emirates University.

He is 52, the same age as Guardiola, and was appointed as Abu Dhabi’s deputy prime minister eight months after City’s takeover. Life is hectic. It can be hard to get to Brentford at home when your day-to-day work involves overseeing an oil company and your country’s sovereign wealth fund, estimated at £799billion.

It would still have been an unusual set of circumstances, though, if a football club won the European Cup and the man who made it possible was not in UEFA’s VVIP seats (yes, UEFA does call them VVIPs, rather than just your ordinary VIPs).

The sheikh has never seen the vast training complex that his money bought across the road from the Etihad Stadium, or what City’s home looks like since its expansion in 2015. He has never seen the 7,000-capacity ‘mini-Etihad’, where the youth and women’s teams play.

He has never heard the reassuring thwack when Kevin de Bruyne strikes the ball with the sweetest contact you could imagine. Or felt the surge of electricity coursing through the stadium whenever Erling Haaland bears down on the opposition penalty area.

Nor has the sheikh ventured to a single match involving New York City, Melbourne City, Mumbai City, Yokohama F Marinos or any of the other clubs in the CFG umbrella. Somehow, it is difficult to think that will change soon.

To go back to the earlier question, however, does it really matter?

Talk to people in Manchester and it does not seem to be of great consequence to the vast majority of City fans, most of whom have come to realise that it is just the way it is.

The owner’s name is still emblazoned across the back of many fans’ shirts. The chant of “Sheikh Mansour my Lord” increased in volume when, in their Champions League quarter-final, Bayern Munich’s supporters held up a banner — “Autocrats Out” — that denounced him.

City’s fans have their own banner permanently in place at the Etihad. “Sheikh Mansour,” it says, “Manchester Thanks You”.

mansour bin zayed bin sultan al nahyan yacht

They will be grateful again, no doubt, if the Champions League final against Inter Milan goes their way. If so, City will have emulated Manchester United ’s treble from 1999, and you still get the feeling they want to keep growing, strengthening the dynasty, making this the norm rather than the exception.

There is already a solid case that, in absentia, the sheikh will end up being the most successful owner, trophies-wise, there has been in the Premier League era.

Yes, none of us can be sure what will happen with the litany of disciplinary charges against City, who are accused by the Premier League of breaking its financial rules . City are determined to defend themselves against the allegations and are confident of doing so. But the punishments, if the case is proven, would presumably be severe.

Even then, however, you have to expect City would still be challenging for titles after any punishment.

Their trophy count under the sheikh stands at seven Premier League titles, three FA Cups, six League Cups, and counting.

Younger fans must think it will always be this way and, in any other circumstances, you could be forgiven for thinking the man who is bankrolling this football juggernaut would like to experience some of the glory for himself.

Not this one, though. That is the way Sheikh Mansour likes it and there is only a small group of people, namely his inner circle, who can say for certain what exactly all this success means to him.

It is an impressive yacht, valued at 600 million dollars, and considered as one of the most expensive in the world.

At 160 meters long, his yacht is 55 metres longer than Manchester City 's stadium, the Etihad.

Its interior has 40 cabins, which can accommodate up to 48 people.

It also has a swimming pool, gyms, massage room, restaurants and two helipads and a sun deck for each cabin, regardless of its location on the ship.

It takes more than half a million dollars to run this luxury vessel, just to fill up the fuel tank.

A project the size of Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed's ego

According to The Sun, in the future there will only be only two mega yachts in the world that are bigger than his.

This is not the first mega-yacht the sheikh has owned. A few years ago, he owned one costing more than 3.50 billion dollars, at 150 metres long.

He even lent it to Leonardo DiCaprio to enjoy his stay in Brazil while he watched the World Cup in 2014.

While there is no official definition of a yacht, it can be simply described as a large vessel (with cabins) intended for luxury or pleasure purposes. Any yacht over 40 meters in length is usually identified as a superyacht.

While some superyachts are exclusively used by their owners, many are offered to charter businesses through which these superyachts can be rented or chartered. The cost of leasing a superyacht could be anywhere between $80,000 to a staggering $4 million per week.

So what are the most expensive yachts in the world? Who owns them, and what extravagant amenities do they have? Let’s find out.

However, the yacht was sold to the Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich within a year of its launch. As a new owner, Roman Abramovich made several modifications to the superyacht, which included adding a second helicopter pad.

In 2011, Pelorus was bought by David Geffen for about $300 million. But he sold the yacht after a brief period to sultan Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan of UAE.

The superyacht changed ownership again in 2016. Its current owner is Samuel Tak Lee, a Hong Kong-based real estate billionaire.

The superyacht accommodates about a dozen of luxurious cabins for guests, two helipads, an entertainment hall, and a mini-submarine that can submerge up to 50 meters below the surface.

More To Know

How long it takes to build a superyacht.

The construction of a superyacht is usually done in four phases – planning or design, engineering, superstructure construction, and outfitting.

It takes about three to four years to build an entire custom superyacht. While it takes less time to construct a vessel on a pre-developed platform with standard elements, building a customized superyacht that caters to all your requirements takes more time. You also have to take unexpected delays into consideration.

The design or planning is the most critical phase in a superyacht construction. Considering the budget and specific requirements, the entire process could take between nine months and a year.

The Current International Market for Luxury Superyachts

The yacht industry is on the rise, and the demand for luxury superyachts has exploded in the last few years during soaring stock markets and crypto gains. Most of the demand is from the United States.

The global yacht industry is valued at $64 billion in 2020 and is expected to reach $84.7 Billion by 2027 growing at a CAGR of 4.1 percent.
