Sunreef Yachts officially opens new manufacturing facility

Sunreef Yachts RAK shipyard

Sunreef Yachts has officially opened its new manufacturing facility in Ras Al Khaimah.

Developed on a 65,000m² land reserve, the new facility will incorporate the latest technologies in luxury yacht building together with sustainability and energy efficiency features.

Sunreef Yachts and RAK Maritime City are currently working together to carry out the development of the facility, which will be able to offer a 360-degree approach to yacht manufacturing with a modern paint shop, carpentry, upholstery and stainless-steel workshops all equipped with state-of-the-art machinery and latest robotics.

The first manufacturing and CNC halls are currently nearing completion.

“We can now further expand in an environment that merges perfect strategic location, skilled workforce and proactive mindset,” said Francis Lapp, founder and president of Sunreef Yachts.

The new Ras Al Khaimah Sunreef Yachts facility

“The yachts produced in Ras Al Khaimah will elevate eco-responsible yachting to a new level and showcase industry-first technology.”

The new facility is part of Sunreef Yachts’ global expansion strategy, aimed at strengthening the company’s presence in the Middle East and allowing a stronger connection with the Asian and Australian markets.

The first units to be produced in Ras Al Khaimah will be the hybrid ULTIMA catamarans as well as power and sail yachts ranging from 50 to 70ft.

“The Ras Al Khaimah shipyard that we are now developing works hand in hand with our local Dubai office, employing a team of specialists from various fields,” said Munira Lapp, Sunreef Yachts Middle East Director.

“The aim is to form a yachting think tank that will not only anticipate trends, but also shape the future of yachting with creative solutions.

“I believe the RAK facility will be the perfect infrastructure to carry out the most advanced eco responsible yachting concepts.”

Yacht builder to the stars capitalises on Dubai boom with new boatyard

Sunreef, which counts rafa nadal and fernando alonso among its clients, could soon employ 2,000 people in ras al khaimah.

Multimillion-dollar, custom-made yachts for the rich and famous will soon be built in Ras Al Khaimah.

Construction has begun on a factory that will build sleek, 55-foot and 70-foot twin-hull boats to supply a growing demand in the Middle East and Asia.

Francis Lapp, founder and president of Sunreef Yachts, says his ambition for the new Dh100 million ($27.2 million) shipyard is to eventually be the same size as the company’s facilities in Gdansk, Poland, which employs 2,000 people.

Even before the factory opens in September, work has begun on securing orders from buyers around the world, including Dubai, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, for bespoke, high-end catamarans with inbuilt solar panels.

“From this facility in Ras Al Khaimah, we can deliver boats everywhere,” Mr Lapp told The National aboard his 80-foot yacht anchored in Dubai’s Palm Jumeirah marina.

“This is the right place to start something new. When finished, it will be the same size as we have in Poland eventually.”

The plan is for Sunreef's superyachts — which are longer than 24 metres or 78 feet and typically need a crew — to be built in Poland and the mid-range catamarans to be constructed in the UAE.

The price for compact 50-foot vessels to spacious transatlantic 140-foot yachts ranges from $2 million to $50 million.

“We are looking at new customers, not only in China, Australia, Singapore and Asian countries, but also in the Middle East, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman and Saudi Arabia,” the French entrepreneur said.

“Fifty per cent of the sales will be only for the region.

“In Ras Al Khaimah, we will build a totally new line that we will announce later.”

Floating holidays for the stars

Tennis star Rafael Nadal, Formula One champions Fernando Alonso and Nico Rosberg, and Spanish singer Julio Iglesias are among some of Sunreef’s most famous clients .

What comes in each yacht's luxurious interior depends on the buyer’s choice. Many include jacuzzis, a gym and a treadmill on the upper deck, while the bedrooms can come with floor-to-ceiling ocean-view windows.

The luxury yachts — often described as floating villas — have lounge areas that double as outdoor cinemas and walkaround paths that skirt the boat.

The fully customised interior of a Sunreef Yachts owned by tennis star Rafael Nadal includes a garage for a jet ski, accommodation for eight guests in four cabins and a master suite with a walk-in dressing room, flip-down ceiling television and private balcony. Photo: Sunreef Yachts

Extravagance was the draw when the yacht business boomed during the Covid-19 pandemic , as the wealthy looked for holiday options away from crowded tourist spots.

“The first two months of the pandemic, we sold nothing. It was difficult,” Mr Lapp said

“Then [for] two years of the pandemic, we had 50-60 per cent more sales than in the normal times.

“People understood the pandemic would not be for two-three months, it will be for a longer time so they bought boats to be safe for their holiday.

“People wanted a different holiday — not in hotels but on boats.

“Now after the pandemic, we will continue [to have good sales] — maybe not at the same concentration.”

Buoyant market brings boatbuilder to Ras Al Khaimah

Buoyant market brings boatbuilder to Ras Al Khaimah

Mr Lapp has been living in Dubai for the past two years.

He moved his base from Poland to Palm Jumeirah and travels daily to Ras Al Khaimah to check on the progress.

“I live in Dubai now because I want to be close to the factory,” Mr Lapp said.

“I am 64 years old. A lot of my friends have stopped work, but for me, it’s a challenge to do something new.”

Training begins

Master builders from the main factory in Poland are training 60 workers from countries including Sri Lanka and India in a rented space near the RAK Maritime City Free Zone.

Inside the high-ceiling space, the builders work on preparing sections of fibreglass frames that will be used in various sections of the yachts — from the fly bridge to the mast.

Polish yacht builder Sunreef is constructing a shipbuilding yard in RAK Maritime City. About 60 staff are being trained to build luxury yachts with numbers that will rise to 1,000 next year. Antonie Robertson / The National

This is the first overseas facility for the Polish company, which Mr Lapp founded 21 years ago.

The two sites in Poland on the Baltic Sea build about 45 boats a year.

The new facility in Ras Al Khaimah is spread over 65,000 square metres. It will employ about 400 people after the first three months and increase to 1,000 by the end of next year.

On site, workers in cranes are readying the main building. Construction will soon begin on a woodwork unit and on a building to house the machine to make moulds for the boats.

“This is the beginning,” Mr Lapp said. “Two thousand [staff]? That is my dream for the next three-four years.

“I want to have the same size of factory, to build the same big boats as in Poland.”

Quiet cruising

He aims to tap into the growing demand for solar boats that give owners quiet, green cruising instead of noisy diesel engines.

The boats utilise energy from the sun across a “solar skin”, with photovoltaic panels built into the hull and across the mast to not only power the yacht, but also run air-conditioning, heating and cooking units.

“Half of our sale is in solar,” he said.

The shipbuilding yard will be ready by September this year. Antonie Robertson / The National

“I see people interested in solar in this region. [Business] people want clients to see they are thinking of the ecosystem.

“We are in a country where you have petrol but people’s demand is changing.

“They don’t want big tanks with fuel and the [fuel] smell on the boat.”

New RAK terminal

Ras Al Khaimah Port Authority said the facility was part of major expansion plans that include a new terminal.

“We are undertaking a massive port development and expansion programme to create a new terminal facility,” said Ankush Vohra, business development manager of RAK Ports.

“Our free-zone customers have direct access to quayside facilities, enabling them to secure large-scale, global projects that can be built in our free zone and then exported directly from Ras Al Khaimah.

“This was one of the major attractions for Sunreef.”

Poland has a long tradition of shipbuilding and Mr Lapp was a pioneer in the country's luxury yacht business.

His ambition is to do similar for the UAE in the high-end catamaran sector.

The Middle East has a special significance for Mr Lapp, who worked in a company that built hospitals in Saudi Arabia in the 1980s.

“I am proud of what we are doing here. I like this [region] from when I was young. My heart is in these Arabic countries,” he said.

“Now I’m happy to come back and to build something new.”

The RAK facility features state-of-the-art machinery including the latest robotics and will be fully operational in September, according to Sunreef. The new shipyard works closely with the company’s new Dubai office (click for article) , which was officially inaugurated during this year’s Dubai International Boat Show in March.

The Polish catamaran builder already has two production facilities in Gdansk on Poland’s north coast, where its original facility in the historic Gdansk Shipyard is complemented by a new, larger facility in Tarcice further east along the Martwa Wisla river.

Sunreef Yachts officially unveils new construction site in the UAE

Following the opening of its first sales office in Dubai, Sunreef Yachts has officially unveiled its manufacturing facility in Ras Al Khaimah, in the UAE as part of its expansion in the Middle East. Approximately 35 models have been sold for construction at the shipyard, including 15 units from its 88 Ultima series .

The Polish multihull yard has entered into an agreement with RAK Maritime City to develop a "world-class" facility on a 65,000-square-metre reserve of land. New Sunreef Yachts Shipyard Opening In Ras Al-Khaimah, UAE

sunreef yachts factory

It’s recently  been announced that Sunreef Yachts plans to expand into the Middle East with a new shipyard located in Ras Al-Khaimah, United Arab Emirates. The production of Sunreef Yachts Ras Al-Khaimah facility will begin in September 2023.

sunreef yachts factory

The Polish shipyard is opening an overseas branch for the first time due to a “growing demand” for its catamarans from the Middle East, Asia, and Australia.

At present, the catamaran builders currently operates two construction sites in Poland, and the Ras Al-Khaimah site will be considered “state-of-the-art”. A total of 65,000 square metres of land have been acquired by Sunreef Yachts. In the next few weeks the yacht builders will begin building its first 13,000 square metre construction shed.

Initial employment at the new location will be around 50. All of whom will help to build the brand’s luxury, custom-made catamarans. The company say they’re expecting its site in Ras Al-Khaimah to have up to 800 employees within three years of opening.

Sunreef Yachts unveils new luxe solar electric Explorer catamaran with over 1,000 kWh in batteries

Avatar for Scooter Doll

Sustainable boatbuilder Sunreef Yachts is adding a sleeker, lighter solar electric catamaran to its portfolio. The new Explorer Eco 40m is the company’s smallest electric yacht to date, but debuts with some of the most advanced technology, including Sunreef’s proprietary “solar skin”

Sunreef Yachts  was established in 2002 in Gdansk, Poland where its shipyard and office still operate alongside a newer footprint established at port in the United Arab Emirates. From its very first year, Sunreef has been pushing the boundaries of sustainable marine travel, launching the world’s first 74-foot luxury oceangoing catamaran with a flybridge.

Today, hundreds of Sunreef Yachts are sailing waters across the globe, showcasing the company’s lineup of sustainable luxury catamarans, all-electric propulsion, and advanced solar panels. That current portfolio consists of eco-friendly sailboats and massive solar electric catamarans ranging from 60 to 100 meters in length.

Today, Sunreef shared it has gone smaller, introducing a new 40m electric yacht called the Eco Explorer.

Sunreef Yacht’s latest electric catamaran is another beauty

Top comment by arno hayes.

I can't wait for ships to start using latent heat batteries with TPV. It might change the whole conversation about electric shipping. To a paradigm where nothing but electric shipping makes sense. Carbon variants can have volumetric energy density upwards of 1.5MWh/m3 (641kg). Though not all of that useable at maximum power output, I'm guessing. Let's call it 1MWh of useable energy. Pure guesstimate. You'd need 4000kg of 250Wh/kg LiIon batteries do the same.

I think a vessel as big as this would be capable of employing a storage system like that. And I believe that they will be suitable for trains and even larger airplanes. Maybe even trucks.

The company’s new Eco version of the 40m Explorer offers customers a sleeker and more sustainable design in a lighter marine footprint, all without sacrificing the luxury and comfort Sunreef is known for.

Sunreef shared that it favors catamarans over traditional yacht hull designs because require less energy to propel at sea – an important factor in marine electrification. The new Eco Explorer 40m features an ultralight composite build and a state-of-the-art electric powertrain consisting of two 540kW motors and two 550 kWh battery packs – giving the electric yacht the ability to cross oceans.

To support the all-electric powertrain, the Eco Explorer 40m is also covered in Sunreef’s proprietary solar skin, which utilizes every available inch of the hull and structure’s external surface to generate free, clean energy – more than enough to power the electric yacht’s onboard systems, HVAC, AV equipment and even its jacuzzi. Per Sunreef Yachts founder and CEO Francis Lapp:

Sunreef has been at the cutting edge of sustainable yachting since its launch. We are the only superyacht builder to have successfully developed the idea of embedding solar cells into large-scale fibreglass structures. But we’re not content to let technology alone do the work. Many elements of our wonderful, custom interiors can also be sourced from recycled and renewable materials. From hemp composite to recycled fabrics -it’s all up to the owner.

Sunreef says its new Eco Explorer 40m can accommodate 10 guests aboard, who can be taken care of by a crew of seven. Its motors deliver a cruising speed of 10 knots and a top speed of 14 knots. Build times are currently three years, and the electric yachts will be built at one of Sunreef’s ports in Poland or the UAE.
