Blue Cruise in Turkey
The evocative term 'Blue Cruise' describes the marvellous cruise taken for several days along the bluest, clearest of seas along the Turkish coast. It covers the whole rich experience of bay hopping, swimming, snorkelling, walking ashore in the forest and on the hillsides, visiting villages, exploring the stones of ancient sites, but above all, living and relaxing on a beautiful wooden boat away from it all.
The Blue Cruise was the name coined for the traditional cruise route along the South West coast of Turkey between Bodrum and Antalya , famous for its distance far from modern life. With unspoiled nature and the most remarkably clear clean turquoise blue seas of the Aegean and Mediterranean these are some of the safest waters to swim in the world, tideless and calm, with the mostly friendly and benign inhabitants such as dolphins, turtles, shy fish and wary birds.
The Blue Cruise is synonymous with the Bodrum gulet , and really has to be experienced in those beautifully shaped, spacious, wooden boats crafted in Bodrum by boatbuilders who have learnt their craft from previous generations. The generous deck space has been adapted to provide the ideal sunbathing, lounging and dining space on deck. Modern technology now allows for unimaginable degrees of luxury compared to the basic fishing and spongediving boats used by the early pioneers of the 'Blue Cruise'.
The actual name was coined by Azra Erhat , the Turkish woman writer and translator who was one of the pioneering group of artists and writers who came to Bodrum to sail with the writer Cevat Şakır Kabaağaçlı. He had first been sent into exile in Bodrum in the early 1920’s from Istanbul when Bodrum was considered to be at the ends of the earth, so remote with poor road access. But Cevat Şakır loved Bodrum and first talked the fishermen of Bodrum into taking him, then his friends out on their small wooden boats to explore the coast so then he came to be called by his pen name ‘The Fisherman of Halicarnassus’. Erhat described these journeys in her 1962 travel guide book " Mavi Yolculuk " (Blue Cruise), and as she was translating Homer and other classics into Turkish, she and her fellow travellers were fascinated by the rich trove of remains of ancient cities and civilisations along the Gulf of Gokova . The 'Blue Cruise' was first an expedition by boat exploring the history and nature of the coast.
Leisurely Exploration and Gastronomic Delights
The Blue Cruise remains a very specific type of cruise and locality: that of the being very relaxed on crewed motoring gulets sailing along the Turkish Aegean and Mediterranean coasts between Bodrum and Antalya. It also refers to the cruise following a certain itinerary, looking not so much for harbor ports to go on tours and shopping, but to really get away from it all, playing in the water, walking ashore, perhaps exploring the stones of ancient sites or villages, and above all, eating well with all the food prepared and served by the crew.
Sometimes the guests are dining on the fish caught that day and with the salad greens from the village market visited on the same day.
Everyone, from a couple to family groups or larger groups of friends, will enjoy this marvellous, informal, relaxing holiday afloat.
As written in so many testimonials, so many people from all over the world and from all walks of life have found it to be an unforgettable holiday, having great fun roaming from Bodrum Peninsula southward into and around the deep indented bays with their many sheltered coves, bay hopping along the Turkish coast, and even extending the cruise to the nearby Dodecanese Islands of the Greek Aegean.

A Quick Guide to Budget Gulet Sailing in Turkey for Backpackers
You won’t find a better way to explore Turkey’s Turquoise Coast than from the decks of a gulet (a traditional wooden boat). But did you know you can experience a blue cruise like this on a backpacker’s budget? You can sail the stunning Turkish Riviera from Fethiye to Olympos on a 4-day cabin charter from just $260. That’s crazy cheap.
Imagine this…
Watching a display of shooting stars as you drift off to sleep, no noise but the waves lapping against the side of the boat. Waking up to the sunrise in a secluded cove, to the smell of pine and herbs and honey. Padding barefoot along the deck, bracing yourself for a dive into water that sparkles like gemstones. Afterwards, you plot the day’s adventures over a breakfast spread of tomato, cheese, cucumber, olives, coffee, bread, and jams.
The catch? For the cheapest prices, you’ll have to share a boat and can expect the facilities to be basic. Oh, but it’s worth it though.
Read on to discover why.
WHY TAKE A FETHIYE-OLYMPOS BLUE CRUISE
I used to be scared of the sea . One of my first memories is of being on a ferry aged 3, afraid to go anywhere near the guardrail. My mind boggled at how anyone could think boats were safe.
A gulet cruise in Turkey converted me.
It was an ex’s idea. We were in Fethiye , heading for Olympos on the Turquoise Coast on the south-west of the country. A backpacker’s haven with treehouses and beach-side ruins, it has drawn hippy types for decades.
The scenic coastal route to Olympos would take a few days and a few buses. But in Fethiye, we discovered that a 3-night cabin charter on gulet cruise could take us along the same route.
This stretch of coastline isn’t the easiest to explore by road. Many of the villages and bays along this coast were inaccessible to road traffic until the 1970s and, despite the new highways, there are still many parts that are difficult to access by car or public transport.
What better than to drift lazily between them on a boat?
A cabin charter is where you rent a room on a boat with other travellers (I use the word ‘room’ loosely). Once I learned the price, I was sold. With food and accommodation costs factored in, it wasn’t much more expensive than making our own way there.
Any fears I had of water were quickly dispelled once I strapped on a snorkel mask and jumped into those crystal clear turquoise seas. The food was as good as a restaurant, but with a much better view.
It wasn’t long before I was a convert to travelling by boat.

WHAT IS A BLUE CRUISE?
Gulet sailing in Turkey refers to a type of sailing charter in this southwestern corner of Turkey, typically week-long liveaboard trips along the stretch of coast from Bodrum to Antalya with an emphasis on enjoying the nature as much as the sights and towns.
Gulet cruises in Turkey are also commonly referred to as a ‘ blue cruise ‘ or ‘ blue voyage ‘. Same thing.
The gulet cruise industry is popularly credited to Cevat Sakir – the Fisherman of Halicarnassus – a writer who was exiled to Bodrum in 1925.
He fell in love with the simplicity of life and beauty of the area, often taking his literary friends out on sponge-diving boats when they visited. Several books were published about these trips, and before long fishing boats had been converted for the tourists seeking the same experience.
WHAT IS A GULET?
A gulet is a type of traditional Turkish wooden motor sailing vessel, originally used for fishing and sponging. If you’re wondering how to say ‘gulet’, it’s pronounced more like ‘goo-let’ than ‘gull-et’.
Although gulets do have sails, you can expect to motor cruise most of the time. Since gulets became popular for charters, adaptations have been made to the design to make it more comfortable for living aboard but less suitable for sailing. They have roomy decks with plenty of space for al fresco dining and sunbathing, and are wide and stable vessels.
The downside of motor cruising is the engine noise. And if you’re looking to learn how to sail, this is not the trip for you.
But if you want to experience life at sea for a few days and explore the coast by boat then gulet sailing in Turkey is great fun and great value. Turkey isn’t the only place in the Mediterranean you can gulet cruise; similar vessels have cropped up in Croatia and Montenegro, but this stretch of coast is the spiritual home.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON A CABIN CHARTER
Most boats offering cabin charters have around 12 passengers and 3 crew, although some party boats cram on more than that. Your meals are provided on the boat and there’s ample room on deck for lounging around, sunbathing, playing cards. A bimini provides shade and protection from the sun. You’ll spend most nights at anchor, hanging out with your fellow passengers, although there are opportunities to link up with other boats if you feel like it (particularly at the infamous Pirate Bay disco). It’s a great way to travel for singles, although you find plenty of couples and friends on the cabin charters too.
The cabins on budget boats are tiny and unlikely to have (working) A/C, meaning it’s more comfortable to sleep on a mattress on deck. If privacy/air-conditioning/showers are more your style then check out more expensive voyages with higher spec boats.
Typical stops between Fethiye and Olympos include:
- Butterfly Valley
Other hubs where you can start/finish a gulet cruise are:
- Rhodes (for Greek islands)
HOW MUCH DOES A GULET CRUISE COST?
So you think sailing’s just for the super-rich? That’s what I thought too. Having grown up inland with no particular interest or experience of watersports, I’d never given sailing a moment’s consideration. I assumed that it was out of my budget and didn’t see the appeal.
Until I tried it.
Cabin charters are the best way to try sailing on a budget
- Cabin charters are shared trips where you rent a cabin rather than the whole boat
- Itineraries tend to be fixed
- It’s a great way to meet people if you’re travelling solo
- Worried about sharing a small space with strangers? Gulets are spacious compared to standard cruising yachts
What’s a typical price for a gulet cruise?
The cheapest rates I’ve seen online for 2018 are around the € 200 mark for the 4-day Fethiye-Olympos route, which tends to be the cheapest option. The higher the price, the better the facilities on the boat. 7-day itineraries start at around €3 00 .
When comparing operators it’s wise to check what’s included. Some allow you to bring your own booze, which can make a difference to your budget if you’re bringing the party spirit. Otherwise alcoholic drinks are sold on board.
BOOKING A CABIN CHARTER ON A GULET
If you’re travelling in peak season (July/August) you should consider booking in advance in order to secure the itinerary/boat that you’re after. That said, there is plenty of competition so it’s not strictly necessary.
The benefits of booking when you’re already in Turkey are that you’ll be able to compare operators, get a sense of the other passengers and crew, and potentially negotiate a lower price—particularly in shoulder season or if you’re travelling solo and hope to avoid paying the dreaded single supplement.
Some people like to party more than others, so talk to the operators to find the boat that’s the right fit for you. Find out who else has booked, make sure you know what’s included in the cost, and don’t forget to check out online reviews.
Things to bear in mind:
- You will be sharing a small space and basic facilities with strangers
- Expect to sleep on deck under the stars, it’s too hot in the cabins unless you’re splurging on a luxury boat with A/C
- Hangovers at sea are an awful thing
Speaking of hangovers . . .
How to avoid a party boat, if that’s not your scene:
- The cheaper the voyage, the more likely it will be full of party animals who have lined the freezer with booze
- Particularly so in the university holidays – July/August
- Fethiye-Olympos (and the reverse) tends to be the cheapest route and most popular with backpackers and young travellers
- Check the ages of other passengers when booking
I loved the gulet cruise experience so much that I brought a group of friends back the following year.
It wasn’t my last sailing experience either, since then I’ve gone on to sail on a tall ship around the Balearics , crewed on a classic yacht, and been a volunteer crew member on the Phoenician Ship Expedition around Africa.

Bodrum Tour Blue Cruise
Last Updated on April 28, 2024
Bodrum Tour is a gulet charter company based in Bodrum – which is one of the leading gulet destinations in Turkey. Bodrum Tour operates under a Turkish Tourism Charter License and Tursab membership with over 32 years of yachting and charter experience combined with the knowledge of the resources of Turkey.
Company owners of this blue cruise adventure have a passion for wooden yachts, Turkish hospitality and culture, fine local cuisine, and they love to plan every detail with their guests to make sure they have the best gulet experience in Bodrum, Marmaris, Gocek, and Fethiye.
Bodrum Tour offers both Private Charters and Cabin Charters .
Private Charters
A private charter, one of the best options, is when you assemble a group of family and/or friends and charter an entire yacht for a cruise of a few days or a week.
Cabin Charter
A cabin charter is when you just rent a cabin on a Turkish gulet —much like a hotel room—rather than charter the entire gulet. It is a cheaper option for those who aren't traveling with a big group.
What Bodrum Tour Offers
With a flexible itinerary, guests can change their plans for the best vacation of their choice. For example, if guests discover an anchorage that they particularly love, they can choose to spend extra time there. At night, if you have more energy and want to do something more exciting, you might choose to go ashore and enjoy local Turkish cuisine and nightlife. The beauty of a private gulet is that you have the choice.
Bodrum Tour Yachting and Travel offers multiple options based on preference, price range, and itinerary. When choosing the gulet or yacht that best suits your party, you have the option to choose from a range of luxury gulets, deluxe gulets, and traditional models. Each gulet's prices are based on amenities, itineraries, and season (low, high, and peak). May – October low season, June - September high, July – August peak season for gulet and yacht charter.
Bodrum Tour Yachting and Travel does an excellent job communicating with guests and helping build the perfect plan for your gulet trip based on your preferences. For example, if you prefer to spend more time sailing, they will match you with the right yacht and itinerary for the best conditions depending on the time of year.
Additionally, their gulets are accessible to those with mobility restrictions. Aside from easily accessible cabins and decks, Bodrum Tour also has an incredibly kind and helpful staff who will assist in getting on and off of the gulet and swim ladder as needed.
Bodrum Tour helps you every step of the way to provide a perfect, memorable gulet excursion.

What is a Gulet?
A gulet is a wooden motor sailing yacht built for blue cruising. Most gulets can be considered as wooden and motor yachts as well as they all have sails too. These yachts are built for you to spend your days on the deck during the charter. Spacious decks and housing a large stern half moon shaped dining and lounging area are the gulet’s main specialties.
They are usually made of pine or mahogany and are beautifully crafted by skilled craftsmen. They range in size from small 2-3 cabin vessels to large luxury yachts with 10 or more cabins.
The passenger capacity of a gulet varies 4 and 16 according to the size. They all have a wide deck in the front parts for sunbathing. The mid-ship parts are used for the bar, kitchen and living room. The stern deck mostly used for resting as well. Seating, dining tables, bar and kitchen take place in this enclosed area.
The cabins take place in the lower deck. A gulet can also be considered as a small hotel afloat. They have an approximate speed of 8 to 11 knots.
Gulets come in different types, but most of them have a wide beam, which gives them plenty of room for outdoor living space. The cabins are comfortable, and some even have en-suite bathrooms. There are also indoor and outdoor dining areas, lounging areas, and a sun deck.

Yacht Charter Reviews of Blue Cruise Gulet
You can ask for more reviews & direct references from us.
How can I thank you?! The "Blue Cruise" gulet and Captain Ali were better than I imagined. EVERYONE had a magnificent time. Many said it was a trip of a life time. A life changer. They were so happy to be introduced to Turkey both in Istanbul and along the southern coast by boat. Many want to go back to get to know Turkey better. All think the Turkish people are extremely friendly and are especially grateful to you. The gulet "Blue Cruise" was in pristine condition. My friend Charles Perini who does a lot of very fine rebuilding of houses and owned a wooden boat, said that he had never seen such a good varnish job. Every thing looked brand new from the covering on the cushions to the deck floor to the ropes. The crew was constantly cleaning the gulet. And the two younger men, Jacob and Ukfar (spelling) never let an empty glass or cup of coffee sit for more than a minute. They were always smiling, especially Jacob. Hussein was chopping vegetable, etc., from morning till night and produced a variety of wonderful dishes. The second week menu was even somewhat different from the first week. Fish three times a week. We cannot eat the tomatoes available here in the US after all those Turkish fresh tomatoes. And then of course there is Captain Ali!!!! I loved him. I had asked you to find not only a good gulet but a captain who knew the coast. Early on I told Ali that we really would like to be anchored for lunch and the night is places where there were less people and gulets. He found the most amazing little coves. We were able to go swimming and snorkeling several times a day in coves to ourselves. Also, he got us to places of interest before the crowds, such as Cleopatra Island. Smart man. And he has a sense of humor. And he was really sweet with Elsa, my four year old grand daughter. As you know, Elsa and Ira had a birthday which we wanted to celebrate on Sunday the 23rd. The crew decorated a cake and big platter and Ali gave Elsa a present.... a pretty little bracelet. Magical. 29.07.2013

Fethiye is a famous town on the southern coast of Turkey and one of the most popular spots to pick up a Fethiye to Olympos gulet cruise . Fethiye has a lot to offer on its own. Being located only 14 kilometers from the famous Oludeniz beach, you have everything on your doorstep, from paragliding to ancient sights to a great historical town to spend your time shopping in. Fethiye is the starting point and ending point for many gulet holidays. Fethiye charter s cruises, so you will always find it bustling in the summer months, and there will always be a warm welcome from any locals. Fethiye is a spot not to miss.

Fethiye - kekova - fethiye, fethiye to olympos, fethiye to demre, fethiye to gocek diving cruise, fethiye to marmaris, fethiye to bodrum, fethiye - 12 islands, yoga cruise turkey.
Don’t miss it! Fethiye may be the meeting point or endpoint for the famous Fethiye Olympos blue cruise voyages and Private Yacht charters , but there is also so much to do h; you can easily spend a few days exploring and enjoying. 1) Be surely grown to Oludeniz Beach to swim in the beautiful aquamarine waters. You may even choose to pay to enter the famous Blue Lagoon st enjoy seeing it from a distance as you float in the beautiful waters of the most photographed beach in EuropLookook out for all the blue cruis e boats heading past this popular stop. 2) Be sure to climb up to visit the Ancient Lycian Tombs for sunset. Not only will you enjoy the tombs in their splendid evening hitting, but you will also enjoy a fantastic panoramic view over Fethiye. 3) Walk through the old town of Paspatur for your local spot of shopping. Be sure to wander through day and night to enjoy the atmosphere. Be tempted by one of the many shops selling their beautiful Turkish goods, or you want to sit in one of the many on offer in bar street and enjoy a cool drink. 4)Get on the local bus and head to the secluded beaches on the other side of Fethiye Harbour. During the week, the beaches can be quiet and private enough that you may be able to enjoy them to yourself. Visiting the local markets a few times throughout the week is suitable. Here you can bargain on your shopping spree st enjoy looking at all the local layouts out their freshly grown produce for sale. Be sure to grab a fresh Turkish pancake – gozleme while there. Best places to eat! There are many great places to eat in Fethiye; whether you want to sit at a restaurant or grab a quick bite from a takeaway shop, your taste buds will not be disappointed. 1) Fish Market . You cannot go past the Fish Market when in Fethiye. Whether you are a fish eater or not is worth the visit. Walk in to check out all the local fresh seafood on offer. If you choose to eat, grab what you want from the fishmongers, then take your pick of the restaurants lining the square, and they will cook it while offering salad, bread, and many tasty mezes.
2) Mozaik Restaurant. This is the locals’ pick, and the passing tourist thinks it's pretty good too. Be sure to turn up here hungry. Mozaik serves delicious large meaty meals from the East of Turkey. Great kebab and chicken dishes and delightful vegetarian meze plates are also available. Be sure to arrive early for a table, as they do not take reservations. 3) For the best kebab in Turkey, head to Yengen Burger on the main road of Fethiye just opposite Fethiye Harbour, around all the bank looks like a fast-food hamburger joint, but what you get is the best-tasting kebab in town in fact, all of Turkey.
4) There are many restaurants in Fethiye's long harbor, and the pick of the bunch would have to be Hilmi . Delicious seafood dishes or fantastic Nazare are available to satisfy people's taste buds. Plus, to boot, you cannot go wrong. 5)If you are after traditional Turkish food, not too fancy, or even some local grub from H, come check out Megri at the edge of the Old Town. A favorite with the locals, it constantly says pumping out local and international dishes for a reasonably good price. Best places to drink ! In the Old Town Paspatur, you will find the most popular spot for drinking – Bar Street. You will find your pick along there; venture a little further for me other great places to end the day over a cold beverage. 1) Car Cemetery can't go past the ever-popular Car Cemetery for an excellent night outer . Found on the main bar street in the Old Town, you can see it with the car popping out of the roof as you walk down the trough. With local bands playing most nights and a DJ in between, you can sit out in the streets and enjoy the road chatting with friends or bust a move or two on the dance floor. This is one of the most popular bars for all the Turkey Gulet cruise customers to have a drink. 2) Café Park Terrace . For a drink with a view, walk further out of the central part of town and find Café Park Terrace. With a vast terrace overlooking Fethiye Harbour, you cannot miss this place for sunset while in the city. Amazing view enjoying a cold one. 3) Corner Bar . Found just on the main roundabout in town and just around the corner of the famous bar street, you can not miss Corner Bar for the best cocktails in town. The super friendly staff has some excellent music tests, so for more local sounds, head here and chill out on their rooftop bar, and be sure not to miss the fruit daiquiris – the best in town. 4) If coffee is your head along the waterfront to Café Osmanli – it has the famous “Movember mustache” as its symbol, so you can't go wrong in recognizing it. They have loads of coffees on the menu and some pretty tasty too. 5)If drinks on the beach sound too good to miss, stop at Buzz Bar and enjoy a cocktail on their open deck overlooking beautiful Oludeniz Beach. B lue Cruise Fethiye Gulets starting from Fethiye. Can you charter a yacht in Fethiye? Fethiye is one of the most popular spots to join on a Sail Turkey or Turkish Blue cruise . In Fethiye harbor, you will find all kinds of sailing yachts and gulets . The standard style gulets are the ones that tend to make voyages in and out of Fethiye, but you can also view some impressive luxury gulets in the harbor. The Fethiye to Olympos Blue Cruise is the most popular cruise departing from Fethiye. You can also jump on a Fethiye to Marmaris cruise.
