The Portuguese bridge on the Nordhavn 40 provides the watchstander a safe exterior conning area but also provides a first line of defense for heavy water that might come over the bow. The solid coaming structure tends to deflect boarding water upward and away from the back sloping wheelhouse windows. Within the well-protected wheelhouse, abundant space is provided for a complete selection of electronics. The rake of the forward wheelhouse windows also reduces interior heat and eliminates glare from primary instrumentation. Additionally, this design provides added space above the line of sight for smaller yet important instrumentation. A full-size folding chart table is located on the port side near the pilothouse door and adequate chart storage is provided below. A folding helm seat is convenient for hand steering and folds out of the way for autopilot operation and standup maneuvering during docking. The most comfortable seating for watchstanding is aft at the settee, which allows easy visibility of instrumentation and an unobstructed exterior view. A full-length watch berth, located aft of the settee, makes watchstanding easy with another person sleeping within arm's reach. Additionally, the settee will serve as another berth, allowing double occupancy of the wheelhouse. The wheelhouse location allows for easier docking than a flybridge might. The helmsman is within easy reach of the port and starboard amidships cleats and can play an active role in line handling during docking. Double access to the boat deck is provided on the port and starboard sides. Access to the foredeck is provided through the Portuguese bridge door where two large integral deck lockers for storage are found. A low-profile cabin house provides headroom forward and two dorade vents for ventilation comfort belowdecks. Back into the wheelhouse and aft through the saloon, the cockpit offers more lounging space than the 46. There's comfortable seating - port and starboard - and easy swimming or tender access through the transom door onto an integral swim step, which stays dry even at full cruising speed. For dockside boarding, an additional door is provided on the starboard side. Portside boarding around the swimstep is convenient using the transom door. If it becomes necessary to move forward from the cockpit, ten-inch-wide walkways are provided on the port and starboard sides with plenty of handholds. Forward is a sunken anchoring well which accommodates the windlass and ensures the dirty runoff during anchor retrieval is contained and drained. A heavy, highly-polished stainless steel double bow roller insures a fairlead to the combination chainwheel and vertical windlass drum. These can be operated independently for use with two anchors. A large deck hatch is provided for fair weather ventilation and light within the owner's cabin below. The entire foredeck is surrounded with lifeline protection and includes a substantial stainless steel bow pulpit. With 120 square feet of boat deck space, there's plenty of room for added deck boxes, bicycles, and cruising gear. An 11-foot tender can be accommodated athwartships at the aft end of the boat deck. The standard spar and boom are fitted with electric winches for easy launching off of either side of the vessel. As with all Nordhavns, a high-level yacht finish is included throughout. Satin finished varnish, teak paneling and trim, Formica, soft vinyl headliners, Corian-type countertops, and fine hardware all complement the beautiful and traditional joinerwork. The main saloon and galley are comparable to the 46 with more than 12 feet of combined width and length. The full-width saloon provides more than sufficient living space. On the starboard side, a settee measuring over eight feet long provides lounging comfort and dining space with a dinette table of almost ten square feet. To port is a TV and entertainment cabinet with extra space for an easy chair. Forward to starboard is added pantry space with room for an enclosed combination washer and dryer. The galley is laid out with ample locker, drawer, and counter space. There are lots of handholds and support for offshore use and the layout allows more than one person in the galley. Over nine square feet of floor space are provided, which allows easy cabinet and refrigerator access. For maximum storage, overhead lockers are included but their depth is limited to allow an easy interface between the galley and saloon. Space is provided for a standup refrigerator, and the stove and oven alcove is outboard while the microwave and vented hood are above. A trash compactor is also available. High-quality Grohe fixtures and Corian-type countertops are standard. The owner's cabin in the 40 is forward and features a queen-size berth, abundant space for drawers, lockers, and hanging lockers. It also includes ample counter and floor space and light. Natural ventilation comes from the dorade vent and hatch above, as well as the two hull-mounted opening ports. A small seating area is provided for dressing and more than six feet of book shelving is also included. Accommodations are provided for guests in a spacious cabin amidships on the port side of the vessel. Large comfortable upper and lower berths, ample drawer and locker space, and spacious seating ensure guest comfort. Adequate ventilation is maintained with a foredeck-mounted dorade vent box and cowl vent ducted to the guest cabin. Two opening ports are also provided. A single head is provided with access from the main passageway. The head is accessible to all without disturbing a sleeping cabin and features large internal dimensions. Significantly larger than the 46 owner's head, there's abundant storage, Corian-type countertops, Grohe sink and shower fixtures, vinyl flooring, an opening port for ventilation and light, and an exhaust blower. Primary access into the engine room is through a door within the guest cabin. A hatch is provided through the cabin sole so inspections and easy access are possible without disturbing the guest cabin. Larger hatches are removable for replacement or installation of large equipment. Benefiting from the Maintenance Strakes, this engine room provides five feet of headroom. The entire engine room is heavily insulated with two inches of sound-deadening material, and completely paneled with attractive and durable, perforated, anodized aluminum sheeting. In addition to the standard systems, there's ample room within the engine compartment for an optional generator, wing engine, watermaker, etc. Service and inspection of machinery is simple within this spacious compartment.

More Details About the Used Nordhavn 40 For Sale

Pacific Asian Enterprises (PAE) spent three years in the development of the Nordhavn 40 , which is the fleet’s smallest ocean-crossing motor vessel. In spite of her modest size, she has an impressive non-stop cruising range and a 900-gallon fuel capacity. When tested in generally calm conditions, for instance, the fully stabilized Nordhavn 40 traveled 2,458 nautical miles at 7 knots.

When traveling in rough conditions on heavy head seas.  This used Nordhavn 40 Yacht delivers an extraordinarily smooth, dry ride.  The high bow, which provides exceptional buoyancy, has much to do with the gentle motions in boisterous waters. She has a forefoot of moderate depth. Steering is sure for the helmsman with the vessel’s large, protected rudder and long keel.

Accommodations

The materials and details of interior construction are pure luxury on this used Nordhavn 40 . There is a spacious feel, with generous overhead clearances and passageway dimensions. The wheelhouse perhaps sets her apart from other coastal cruisers more than anything else. It is commercial-like and provides a panoramic view of the surrounding horizon and full view of the ship. The captain also has comfortable access to navigation equipment, controls and instruments. The forward-facing windows are 3/8” thick.

The space design of this used Nordhavn 40 Yacht is innovative and further evidence of high-quality workmanship. The overall interior volume is comparable to many vessels in the range of 45 to 50 feet. Throughout, there are satin-finished teak cabinets and a myriad of other fine, yet robust details. The Nordhavn 40 is unquestionably among the world’s finest yachts.

NORDHAVN 40 MODEL BACKGROUND:

The 40 is the sixth design in the Nordhavn series.  She was conceived to create an entry level vessel that an adventurous couple could use to explore with an “out of the box” range of 3,000 miles.  Most of the people who buy a Nordhavn 40 are owner operators, whether new or seasoned. They appreciate the generous interior accommodations (saloon and galley on the entry level, raised pilothouse and two staterooms with one head on the lower level) and seakindly ride through the water with home comforts and conveniences.

Sea Trek is a first generation (US built) Nordhavn 40 – hull 32 out of 44 produced in southern California by legendary cruising sailboat builder, Pacific Seacraft.   When this California builder faltered at hull 44,    PAE/Nordhavn shipped the tooling to the Nordhavn yard in China to continue production stating with hull 45 and differentiated the two versions in this series as Mark I US made, and Mark II China built.

The saloon is spacious because it is pushed out on both sides, no wasted space filled with rarely used walking side decks.  Sea Trek was ordered with the optional fly bridge, which provides an excellent outdoor area above the pilothouse for taking command underway or relaxing when at rest.

Following in the footsteps of the older and larger siblings that preceded her, the Nordhavn 40 established a production hallmark that set the standard for all Nordhavn models to follow.  Starting with highly polished tooling, she has a solid fiberglass hull layup with integrated swim platform.  The deck layout took advantage of many preferred features including a recessed anchor well on the bow, built-in deck boxes on the foredeck and a Portuguese bridge. Outside and up some steps, takes you to the boat deck and flybridge.  The dinghy is mounted aft (athwartships) and the mast supported boom is used to launch and retrieve the tender.

Seventy Nordhavn 40s have been produced, approximately 44 in the US and 30 in China. The rising costs of materials and labor has pushed the new boat price for a well outfitted Nordhavn 40 into an uncomfortable territory. Fortunately, the quality construction and owner care supports a high residual value for brokerage (used) boats that have kept this model increasingly popular for over two decades with no end in sight.

Note:  In 2020 there is a significant import Tariff for Chinese built products (new and used).  The US built 40 Mark I is not subjected to the 26.5% duty, but a non-US flagged brokerage Mark II can be excessively expensive to import – please consult with a qualified maritime attorney before purchasing a Mark II.

DESCRIPTION:

Cockpit: The cockpit (aft deck), is sufficiently sized to provide an easy entry landing for gaining access to the interior.  There is a molded in swim platform aft for getting in and out of the water or transitioning to your tender.  There are two hull boarding doors, one aft from the swim platform and one on the starboard side for dock access. A hot and cold fresh water shower is installed for rinsing off.  The large opening floor hatch provides access to the lazarette below. The boat deck extends partially over the cockpit and there are two molded in seats aft, one for supply storage, the other is the propane locker.

  • Two boarding doors – aft and to starboard
  • Swim ladder for swim platform
  • Two built in seats with cushions are aft, facing forward (port side doubles as propane locker)
  • Hot and cold freshwater shower
  • Aft CCTV camera (2020)
  • Air vents for engine room

Lazarette:   Located below the cockpit through the large hatch is the lazarette. The forward bulkhead has a hinged step where most of the house and start batteries are located.  All (5) of the house batteries were replaced in 2019.  The inverter is outboard to starboard, there is an electric bilge pump, water maker and steering. On the port side is the fresh water accumulator tank and hot water tank. An emergency tiller is fitted in the overhead.  The custom swim ladder is stored here too.  This is a larger area that is a convenient storage cavern for extra supplies and gear.

  • Concealed battery bank under forward bulkhead hinged lid step
  • Magnum MS2812 inverter/charger (2019)
  • Jabsco electric bilge pump
  • Watermakers Inc, reverse osmosis 400 GPD water maker (2019)
  • Hydraulic steering ram
  • Raymarine autopilot
  • Seward 10-gallon hot water tank
  • Fresh water accumulator tank
  • Swim ladder
  • Emergency tiller
  • Locking rod from engine room to secure cockpit hatch

Saloon:  One unique feature on the Nordhavn 40 is the lack of walking side decks – this makes for a much wider saloon and through traffic is directed via the interior which is actually faster and safer.  A Diamond SeaGlaze full height door (with dogs and gasketing) leads into the saloon which has an L-shaped Ultraleather settee to starboard and another built in settee to port.  Both settees have storage underneath.  There is an adjustable hi-low teak table which can be positioned in a variety of locations depending upon how you want to use it for eating, working or relaxing. The sole is carpeted. For entertainment, a flat screen television is mounted forward to starboard with a stereo locker.

  • Wall to wall comfortable Berber carpeting (2019)
  • High/Low teak table with folding leaves – moveable
  • Slide windows with screens
  • Teak magazine storage rack
  • Teak book storage shelves

  • Fusion stereo with marine-grade stereo speakers (2018)
  • Controls for air conditioning
  • Ship’s clock and barometer

Galley: Moving forward on the same level as the saloon connects you to the galley portside. The beautiful teak faced column that provides delivery of the main engine dry stack exhaust creates a natural divide while retaining an open-air feeling.  The current owners have taken their time aboard seriously, and upgraded the refrigerator freezer system from the standard door opening Sub Zeros (very electricity hungry) to much better and more efficient Vitrifrigo stainless faced drawers (two sets, one in the galley and one outboard to starboard across from the galley). A new microwave oven (stainless surface) with an exhaust fan has also been installed. This is a functional galley with Corian counters, teak lockers and drawers and two opening portlights outboard.  On the aft counter is a large stainless-steel sink with Grohe faucet. There is a Seaward 10 three-burner propane stove and oven with broiler and overhead fan. The galley creates an intersection with two choices, you can go down the centerline hallway to reach the head and staterooms or continue up a few short steps to the pilothouse.

  • Vitrifrigo 110V/12V refrigerator (2018)
  • Additional 110V Vitrifrigo freezer with icemaker in cabinet to starboard opposite galley (2018)
  • Seaward three-burner propane stove and oven with broiler
  • GE microwave oven with exhaust fan (2019) Identical microwave as spare part included.

  • Teak spice rack
  • Teak paper towel rack
  • Corian countertops
  • Lonseal raised coin vinyl flooring
  • Two opening portlights outboard

Pilothouse: The Pilothouse is accessed a few steps up from the entry level.  The view from the pilothouse is outstanding – you are surrounded by windows looking forward, outboard and aft. There are two Dutch Doors outboard for easy outside deck access. The navigation equipment was upgraded in 2018/2019 and includes a full suite of Simrad electronics complete with touchscreen control and with all chart software up to date.  There is a stainless-steel wheel with a well laid out dash area fitted with all of the electronics control screens smartly positioned above and below the forward windows. The electrical panel breaker is behind a clear door cabinet to starboard. On the horizontal dash you have the main engine and wing engine control levers.  On the vertical face there are controls for the bow thruster, anchor windlass, horn, wipers, etc. All of the primary ships systems are monitored from this raised pilothouse including controls for the watermaker, generator, inverter and air conditioning systems.  The aft section has a watch berth and a large sofa settee fronted by a custom, adjustable teak table making this an easy place to run the vessel or as a shipside office when in port.

  • Two 12” Simrad NSS EVO3 MFD with remote Wi-Fi connections (2019)
  • Two 7” Simrad NSS EVO3 MFD with remote Wi-Fi (2019)

Engine Room: You enter the engine room through a door located aft in the guest stateroom (you can also enter though the sole, aft in the saloon). The maintenance strakes molded into the hull create additional headroom outboard of the main engine on both sides. Two fiberglass fuel tanks with perforated aluminum screens are outboard and each tank has its’ own sight glass for a quick fuel level viewing. Both tanks feed a supply tank in the forward bilge and this reservoir has a water in fuel alarm and a sump built in for stripping out water or fuel tank debris. This engine room is well laid out, has foam padding along the sole and has been equipped with all systems and components easy to inspect and service.  The Lugger L688D main engine is keel cooled with a dry stack exhaust and mated to a Twin Disc 3.0:1 transmission.  This is a continuous duty rated power plant that was engineered for non-stop passage making over several days or weeks.  Fresh air intake from the cockpit risers and internal blowers keep air circulating and the hot air is directed up the stack to vent out above the engine room. circulation to maintain ideal engine room operating temps.  Diesel fuel filtration is accomplished by dual Racor 900 filters and a Racor 500 filter for the generator.  Oil changes are convenient through the use of a Reverso oil change system plumbed to the main engine and the generator.  The 20-gallon Raritan water heater was replaced in 2015.  In order to help with clean fuel Sea Trek has a fuel filtering system and the ability to transfer fuel between tanks.

*OWNER COMMENTS: Details of Sea Trek Insurance Claim – 2018

In September 2018, Sea Trek was on a mooring ball in Beaufort, SC at the Beaufort Downtown Marina. Unfortunately, given the tides/currents and opposing wind, the shackle on the mooring ball failed to rotate properly.  This caused the mooring ball to submerge underneath Sea Trek resulting in the mooring line becoming entangled in the stabilizer fins.  In the process of trying to remedy the situation, a line had to be cut to release Sea Trek from the mooring.  Unbeknownst to us, a line wedged between the stabilizer and the hull which then wrapped around the prop and shaft.  When the main engine was engaged, the line that was wrapped around the shaft caused a sudden stop which impacted the engine mounts.

Repairs were performed at the highly regarded shipyard, Thunderbolt Marine Inc. in Savannah, Georgia.  Specific repairs related to the incident included new engine mounts.  However, in addition to that and, out of an abundance of caution, we chose to replace the entire main gear system which included a new transmission with an upgrade to include a mechanical pressure gauge as well as the transmission oil cooler. We also had both stabilizer fins pulled and rebuilt to factory specifications.

We have used the boat over 1,090 engine hours (as of July 27, 2020) and over 7,000 nautical miles since then (a large percentage of that was offshore), with no issues arising from this incident.

This unhappy event actually turned into a blessing in disguise while we paused our adventure while Sea Trek was being repaired to do a major refit of almost every major system including the installation of a new comprehensive electronics/navigation package (Simrad multi-function displays, radar, KVH LTE, etc.), upgraded the inverter/charger, the addition of a 35- 40 GPH watermaker, 760 watt solar panels system with Victron and LC components.  Plus, a Viking Rescyou Pro Offshore life raft, replaced and upgraded all batteries, new refrigerator and freezer, new fresh water electronic controlled head and much more.

NORDHAVN 59 “THE DOGHOUSE’

All listings, nordhavn 59 the doghouse.

nordhavn yachts 40

 LLC Owned vessel

The Nordhavn 59 Coastal Pilot The Dog House is truly in a class of her own. The Dog House is a 2019 model that is extremely well equipped by a meticulous owner. The Dog House started her life on the east coast in Florida and cruised the Eastern Seaboard and the Bahamas for two seasons. After her time on the east coast The Dog House was then shipped through the Panama Canal up to Ensenada, Mexico in 2021. Since then, she has cruised the Channel Islands, Catalina and Baja, Mexico.

The Dog House has a 4-cabin layout with a forward galley and aft salon. She also boasts an additional day head in the aft starboard corner of the salon. The interior wood selection is an elegant cherry wood with a 60% gloss varnish, and a textured wall covering adorns the bulkheads in certain areas throughout the vessel above the chair rail height. The Dog House is the Motor Yacht version of the Coastal Pilot series, which mean the salon/galley area has been extended aft by about four feet, which really adds quite a bit of interior volume. The Motor Yacht version also provides a full height engine room all the way to the transom as the cockpit deck has been relocated aft by about four feet as well. No space is lost by the cockpit being moved aft, the only thing given up is the lower fishing deck. The final positive feature of the Motor Yacht version is the extended boat deck, which makes for a wonderful space on this upper level.

As you walk aboard The Dog House you will enter from the extra-large swim step. The port side of the swim step has engine room access through a watertight pantograph hinged door. Access to the cockpit is up a few stairs on the port side. The cockpit of The Dog House has been very well thought out, and  the deck is non-skid for low maintenance. There is a secondary access hatch on the deck into the engine room as well as a soft hatch in case large equipment from the engine room needs to be removed or installed. There is loose deck furniture that can be stowed away in a larger seaway if needed. Typically, on the Nordhavn 59 you would see a stainless-steel ladder with FRP steps leading to the boat deck on the port side of the cockpit. However, The Dog House has a molded FRP staircase with teak treads, and this allowed Nordhavn to fabricate this staircase with a lighter angle making it easier to access the upper deck. This staircase also allows for more storage in the cockpit area. Inboard of the staircase is (an optional) stainless steel sink built into an FRP console with overhead locker storage as well.

From the cockpit one will enter the aft salon through a double hinged watertight door. The port side of the salon is equipped with a comfortable “L” shaped settee and dinette. The table has hinged leaves so it can be folded for smaller parties or opened up when more guests are onboard. The starboard side of the salon is equipped with a private day head in the aft corner. Forward of the day head is another settee facing inboard toward the dining area, which makes for a great conversation area. The salon TV is located on the forward bulkhead and can easily be viewed from both settees. Leaving the spacious salon and moving forward one will find the galley to the port side and the helm to the starboard side. We will start in the galley. The galley has been built in a “U” shape to allow for easy access to all components. The Vitrofrigo refrigerator and freezer are located on the aft bulkhead of the galley. The area above the freezer was left open to the salon intentionally to allow for a more open feel to this main interior deck. Outboard of the refrigerator is a second top loading freezer under the countertop level, which was a practical use of a space that could have been an empty void. In the middle of the galley is an island with storage below. As well as being filled with storage, this island doubles as a great leaning post and a place to stabilize yourself in a larger seaway. The galley is equipped with a Kohler double basin stainless sink as well as the following appliances:

  • Sharp KB6424PS drawer microwave
  • GE Profile cooktop #PP9830SJSS
  • GE Profile vent hood #PV970NSS
  • GE Profile oven #GPT7050SFSS
  • GE Profile trash compactor #UCG1680LSS
  • Vitrofrigo refrigerator with fridge drawer and freezer drawer stainless steel front
  • Vitrofrigo undercounter refrigerator, stainless steel front
  • Haier HFC3501ACW top loading freezer

Opposite of the galley area lies the helm, the main electrical panel and the entrance to the private master cabin. The helm has been equipped with everything an operator would need for a vessel of this size. Navigation and electronic equipment are listed below in the Navigation section. The helm bench has been raised several inches to allow the operator better visibility. The step up into the helm has also been removed, and is a nice feature as an operator can now stand at the full height helm. Visibility from this area is truly amazing and makes maneuvering the Nordhavn 59 an ease. The main electrical panel is located aft of the helm area. The panel has been set higher than normal which means the operator no longer needs to bend down to access this panel. It’s really at a more comfortable height on The Dog House .

Access to the private owner’s cabin is on the starboard side just aft of the helm down a flight of stairs. All other cabins are accessed forward of the helm and galley. Once downstairs there is a queen size berth with ample hanging locker and drawer storage. Port lights in the hull allow for natural light into the owner’s cabin. There are ventilation blowers to bring in fresh air to this area. Accessed thru the aft bulkhead in the owner’s cabin is the head, fully equipped with a spacious countertop with storage below, a Tecma toilet and a molded FRP shower. The owner’s cabin is located midship, so this a very comfortable cabin. With the cherry wood below and the lighter wall covering above the chair rail level, this roomy cabin feels light and airy.

Access to the three guest cabins is forward down the centerline of the vessel. Down a few steps there is a forward landing area, and from here off to the starboard side are the full height Bosch 800 Series washer and dryer tucked away in the corner out of sight, but still very easy to access. The port side of the landing is home to the guest head. The guest head can be accessed from the VIP directly as well as from the forward landing. This is a full head with a nice vanity area, Tecma toilet and FRP molded shower. The forward VIP guest cabin is equipped with a queen berth, ample hanging locker and drawer space as well as a 32″ TV hung on the aft bulkhead. Portlights in the hull allow for natural light and overhead Lewmar hatches allow for fresh air. Aft of the lower landing is access down a few steps to the other two guest cabins, one to port and one to starboard. These are great cabins for additional guests. Each have portlights for natural light and ventilation blowers for fresh air, nice dressing areas and plenty of storage.

On to the exterior spaces on The Dog House. Since this version of the Nordhavn 59 is the Motor Yacht, the flybridge and boat deck areas have been extended for more usable space. The covered flybridge has a 3-sided removable enclosure, which is very nice to have in rainy or windy weather. On the flybridge there are two settees, one on each side facing inwards. Then there is a center settee with seating facing forward which doubles as the helm bench and seating facing aft with a fixed dinette table. The Dog House has the optional FRP molded hardtop with lighting on the underside and non-skid on the topside for safety. One additional feature added to The Dog House is the flybridge BBQ console on the starboard side. This console has a Kenyan Texan electric BBQ as well as a stainless steel under counter drinks refrigerator and stainless sink. There is a custom cover made for the entire console. The boat deck aft holds an AB ALX12 center console tender with a 30hp Yamaha outboard. There is a custom tender cover for this as well. To lift and retrieve this tender there is a 1,000-pound capacity Steelhead davit. The davit is a full function davit, power boom up and down, power boom rotation, power boom telescoping and power winch functions. This really makes launching and retrieving the tender much easier and safer for the operator. The foredeck area on the 59 is a great lounge area. Sundeck cushions were custom made to fit this space, handrails and cup holders are integrated into this area as well.

Finally, on to the machinery spaces of the Nordhavn 59 The Dog House . From the swim step one enters the aft portion of the engine room. Nearly all mechanics and technicians compliment this space once onboard. It is a truly massive area, and the full height headroom allows for easy access anywhere in the engine room. The two Cummins QSM11 715 HP engines stand proud in the middle of the engine room with room to access all four sides of each room and more. The Northern Lights 16kw generator is mounted centerline with a stainless-steel workbench above with an ER sink built in. There are FRP molded storage lockers lining the port and starboard sides as well as on centerline above the workbench. All other components such as the watermaker, dive compressor, water heater and pumps all have the easily accessible homes in the engine room. There is a secondary entrance to the engine room from a deck hatch in the cockpit. A stainless-steel ladder down from the deck allows for access. Nothing was left out in this engine room.
