2007 riviera 3600 sport yacht

4 comments:

This yacht was a big shot when it first apeared. For the curious minds, the price is somewhere betwen $170,000 and $260,000. You can't find a new one because because it isn't manufactured anymore but still, most of them are in good shape.

2007 riviera 3600 sport yacht

According to Riviera website the 3600 in its 2009 introduced Series II variant is still available. http://www.riviera.com.au/3600-sport-yacht-home.html

Indeed, you're right! Sorry for the misinformation. I checked some yacht directories, they gave me 0 results for new ones so I assumed that it isn't available anymore. Next time I'll make sure to check on the official page also ;)

It is possible you are half right, or they are building it to order. To know this you need to send an e-mail to Riviera. I would not be surprised if a change is in order, as recent Riviera models last about three to four years, and the new Sport Yachts have taken a more European flavour unlike the more American of the 3600. The 3600 Series II has been going on for seven years now. But may it still selling how it is, so if it did not break why fix it!

Riviera - Australia’s Premium Luxury Motor Yacht Builder

2005 - RIVIERA 3600 SPORT YACHT

When she was launched at the Sydney International Boat Show in 2005 and the 3600 Sport Yacht unveiled an exciting new era for Riviera.

This was the beginning of a new concept for Riviera. Single-level living with an awning window and pillarless saloon door that brought the indoors, outdoors.

The sport yacht design has evolved and continues as one of Riviera’s most popular to this day.

The international boating community immediately took a close look.

In Australia she won Modern Boating magazine’s overall Cruiser of the Year award in 2006 and went on to win Asia Boating magazine’s Best Motoryacht under 40 feet the following year.

She featured on magazine front covers across the globe, from Wassersport in Germany to Boating World and Trade-a-Boat in Australia.

She was reviewed by boating journalists in Russia, Germany, the US, Portugal, Spain, Italy, the Middle East and Australia.

Trade-A-Boat magazine stated: “The 3600 Sport Yacht has universally appealing design traits that centre on human factors, ergonomics and amenities.”

Lakeland Boating in the US said: “A generous list of standard features makes being aboard just like home.”

Power and Motoryacht’s reviewer described her as a “handsome package” going on to state that “it’s the single-level living space that sets her apart”.

She was powered by optional twin Volvo Penta D6 turbo diesel engines rated to 310 hp or twin Cummins diesels rated to 333 hp.

Riviera built 109 of the 3600 Sport Yachts in just four years of production.

riviera 3600 sport yacht series ii review

Riviera 3600 sport yacht review.

riviera 3600 sport yacht series ii review

Issue: October/November 2005

Many Australian boat builders use the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show as the launching pad for their latest models. At this year’s bash, Rivieria pulled out all the stops to showcase its latest range.

Amid acrobats, musicians and a spectacular laser light show at its Coomera base, the Aussie boat-building icon released five new models to more than 400 invited Riviera owners and media.

As one of the guests, I was impressed by what I saw that night the R47 Series II, the M360 and the M400 Sport Cruiser and the R60 Flybridge Convertible (displayed back at the Cove). But what really grabbed my attention was the new R3600 Sport Yacht. The moment I saw the new 3600 SY (and even before I got the chance to take a closer look at her), I turned to colleague Kevan Wolfe and said: “this boat’s going to sell like hot cakes.”

Why ? Because this new vessel is a complete departure from anything Riviera has produced. It’s got the “look”. That classic, stylish, look that appeals to a broad section of the boating community.

Fast forward a few months and the Modern Boating team were given the chance to test the new R3600 SY in Sydney. After spending a morning onboard the R3600 SY, I knew my predications for this outstanding vessel would come true.

Within minutes of getting my chance behind the helm of the 3600, I was completely at ease and confident enough with her performance and handling to take this boat just about anywhere in any conditions. She’s almost easier to drive than the average family car and probably a lot smoother.

NEW HULL DESIGN

But the 3600 SY’s biggest asset is her new hull configuration. Like many of the world’s best boat builders, Riviera has now introduced mini tunnels into all of its new hulls (these will be incorporated into all Riviera hulls over time).

These vastly increase performance and handling by reducing the drive-shaft angle, which gives more efficient propulsion. The shallower shaft angle also means a shallower draft and obvious advantages.

The mini tunnels give the props clean water to run in, improve straight-line tracking and the hull’s ability to turn without any excessive tail slippage.

But Riviera hasn’t stopped there. The company has also introduced underwater exhausts, which minimise engine noise both outside and inside the cabin, eliminate smoke around the transom and help aerate the water under the hull.

This helps break water surface tension for more efficient planing. The rudders have also been upgraded. The ones fitted to the 3600 SY are longer and narrower than those on previous models and are more like those used on racing boats.  This enables the hull to perform more aggressive turns.

PERFORMANCE & HANDLING

The conditions during the trip down Sydney Harbour as we powered towards The Heads were calm, giving the team the opportunity to obtain exacting speed-to rpm readings. And thanks to the Volvo Penta engine-management system, which comes with the twin 310hp Volvo D6 installation, we were also able to gather accurate speed-to-fuel burn figures.

At the time of the test, the Riviera 3600 SY test boat had 63 hours on the clock. According to the engine-management system, it had averaged 30lt per hour under a variety of running conditions at speed, from idle to flat out and everything in between. During these tests the 3600 SY recorded the following speed-to-rpm and fuel burn figures.

The twin 310hp diesel had more than enough grunt to slide the 3600’s hull out of the hole. The boat does come onto plane with a slight bow-up attitude, but at no time did we have any trouble seeing over the bow. This bow-up angle can be reduced by using the trim tab, which was integrated into the hull on this vessel, but we found we didn’t need too much trim when underway at sea and only used the tabs for lateral trim in the varying wind conditions. Plus, this slight bow-up running angle ensures the sharp bow entry sliced through the swells cleanly.

The only downside is you have to bend down slightly to get a totally clear view well behind the boat. But don’t get me wrong, because on the whole, the 360- degree vision from the helm station is extremely good. As it is from anywhere in the saloon, as the large cabin windows offer magnificent panoramic views of the passing scenery for anyone seated there.

At sea, the electronic controls and light steering make this boat a pleasure to drive. The hull’s aggressive chines and pronounced flare deliver a soft and dry ride. There was obviously plenty of fibreglass used in this boat’s construction, because running noise was minimal and the hull didn’t bang and crash, even head on into the swells. With the saloon doors closed, engine noise was almost nonexistent. But even with these doors open the underwater exhaust do their job of quietening running noise.

This boat was designed with two things at the top of the “most wanted” list. She must have the ability to go cruising in comfort, but still retain the creature comforts needed for entertaining. Her open-plan layout, large all-round windows and clever glass rear saloon doors, the starboard door opens and locks against the cabin wall, while the port half-window opens and locks against the aft cockpit’s roof, combine to bring the outdoors indoors.

The spacious aft cockpit features teak decking, a transom lounge and a folding timber table that’s ideal for al fresco dining for two. It can also be used as a servery for the nibbles when you’re entertaining onboard. There’s a cockpit fridge to keep the drinks cold and a locker unit on each side of the cockpit. A barbeque can be fitted to one and a sink unit to the other.

A stainless steel door opens onto the teak swim platform where there’s a shower to wash off the salt and sand after a swim. There are plenty of grab rails to hold onto when negotiating the walkways around the cabin when going forward. These walkways are a little narrow near the aft cockpit, but they widen as you move forward. Up for’ard there’s a large sunpad for those wishing to soak up a few rays and a thigh-high bow rail if the need ever arose to go to the bow when anchoring.

The saloon features a comprehensive galley to starboard, teak flooring, a pop-up plasma TV in the forward bulkhead and a comfy lounge to port, which doubles as a single bunk and gives the 3600 a sleeping capacity of five. There’s room for two in the forward stateroom and two in the guest’s stateroom on the portside.

The helm station features full instrumentation and a comfortable driving position on a wide bench seat. The massive windscreen wipers are a big bonus. They give the driver a clear view forward. Above the helm and navigator’s station are sliding hatches, which are excellent for ventilation if you don’t want to “arc up” the reverse cycle air-conditioning.

There are also sliding forward widows on both sides of the cabin, which aid ventilation and mean you don’t need to keep the air-conditioning running all of the time. The head is on the starboard side behind the helm.

This boat is surprisingly spacious for a 36-footer. It features a vanity unit with large mirror, a mid-sized toilet and an enclosed shower recess that yes, you can stand comfortably in to wash yourself.

In short, this boat has all the features to make her an ideal vessel for those long, leisurely cruises for two, or a family of four with one of the kid’s friends tagging along. She’s comfortable and luxurious, but not overly opulent, so you won’t have to worry about the children doing too much damage to the woodwork.

Her handling and performance are excellent and if the sea does come up you can batten down the hatches and make the trip home with complete confidence, thanks to her rough water capabilities.

With a starting price of $439,000, before you start adding the genset and the like, the Riviera 3600 Sport Yacht fills a gap in the company’s model line-up and represents excellent value for money.

THE RIVIERA STORY

Riviera is Australia’s largest and most awarded builder of quality Flybridge Convertibles and Sport Cruisers.

It recently celebrated 25 years in the Aussie boat building industry.

In its first year, Riviera built a handful of boats in a small factory in Sydney’s Northern Beaches district of Terrey Hills. Today, the company builds more than 450 luxury boats each year at the largest boat-building facility in the Southern Hemisphere at Coomera on the Gold Coast.

Riviera has invested heavily in people and training and now has more than 1200 dedicated and skilled craftspeople working at its production facility. This includes 200 young people training as apprentices with the company. There are now 13 models in the Riviera range. These include Flybridge cruisers from 33 to 60 feet, Sport Cruisers from 29 to 43 feet and the new 3600 Sports Yacht.

ENGINE ROOM

The Riviera 3600 SY is powered by twin 310hp D6 Volvo Penta common rail diesel engines, which include in their instrumentation Volvo’s excellent engine-management system.

PERFORMANCE On the day of this test in calm conditions on Sydney Harbour the 3600 Sport Yacht returned the following speed-to-rpm readings: 6 knots @ 1060 rpm, 6.9 knots @ 1200rpm, 8.8 knots @ 1800 rpm, 9.5 knots @ 2000 rpm, 11 knots @ 2200 rpm, 18.7 knots @ 2800 rpm, 29.1 knots @ 3630 rpm.

Riviera 3600 Sports Yacht

Author  : Barry Tyler

Despite the news of an increase in the number of models at the top end of the range, The Riviera Group has confirmed its commitment to the entry level end of the market also, following the world release at the recent Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show of a state-of –the-art Series Two version of its popular Riviera 3600 Sports Yacht model.

Riviera obviously appreciated this most necessary of niche areas of the cruiser market and as such has re-visited this entry level vessel again, embracing the concept further by enhancing dramatically the ‘family’ aspect, with additional and more user-friendly accommodation provision. The company has seemingly gone to great lengths to provide the consummate allrounder that offers sports performance and handling, improved economy, elegance and practicality.

Aimed unashamedly at the mum and dad retiree market as well as the first time family boater who may have neither the budget nor the inclination to foot it with the big boys, while thankfully Riviera has resisted totally the temptation to mess with the under hull design, or the visually appealing exterior profile (apart from the availability of coloured topsides and the addition of a bonded glass window in the hull side), it has now added the usual marketdemanding cosmetic changes expected in a 2009 model cruiser.

Included within these changes were three ‘biggies’ – a change of power mode, an additional bedroom, and a cockpit floor with a difference. Central to this change and certainly impacting on the above layout changes was the seemingly radical change of powertrain. Shaft drive is out and in for 2009 is the decision to fit this latest model with the IPS (Inboard Propulsion System) pod-drive system which Volvo Penta suggests offers a 20% increase in speed, 15% greater acceleration, up to 50% lower noise and vibration levels, easier handling and 30% better cruising range. Whether or not you fully believe all that hype is up to the individual but one cannot escape the fact that more and more boaters are succumbing to the simplicity and ease of operation of this system; hence the rationale behind Riviera’s decision to offer this model, solely with this power mode.

As well as the suggested performance attributes the other very direct benefits of this power configuration accrue from the compactness of this IPS drive and propulsion system. The greater internal volume provided designers with the opportunity to provide a second family-orientated full-beam aft stateroom, along with a seemingly larger cockpit. Seemingly being the operative word for it was more the fact it was devoid of the cockpit seating and dining provision the earlier model boasted.

riviera 3600 sport yacht series ii review

Why, was my first subconscious thought regarding the lack of this perceived ‘vital creature comfort’, but of course yet again the answer lay in the age old reality that everything aboard a vessel is a trade-off in some way, regardless of size or stature of the vessel. The fishermen will love the uncluttered surprisingly generous working area, the entertainers may well be disappointed in some small way, but the reality was this ‘nudity’ (apart from the portside refrigerator and starboard sink and gas-bottle cupboard) in the cockpit was infinitely more sensible in a situation where the trade-off was sublime access to the engines and mechanical peripherals that lay below.

riviera 3600 sport yacht series ii review

The other ‘compensator’ was the boarding platform that while generous in proportion and safe with its aft pulpit-style frames, offered convenient access to the giant transom ‘boot’ that provided good storage potential for fenders, wet gear, mooring lines – and an outdoors table and chairs setting, for the cockpit! Problem solved, as regards the lifestyle aspect of your cockpit, but if you were still unhappy with that ‘remote arrangement then Riviera does provide an optional lounge and dining table setting appropriate for a lifting cockpit sole.

riviera 3600 sport yacht series ii review

Indoor Outdoor Living

The indoor-outdoor lifestyle aspect of this single-level 3600Series II was embraced with the above features, and of course the usual bow-rail encapsulated expansive foredeck that beckoned the sun-worshippers forward to the sun-pad. But it didn’t stop there, for stepping inside one quickly appreciated the fact this lifestyle theme flowed through to the saloon area as well, courtesy of the lift-up 4400SY-style hopper window which deemed the aft bulkhead pillar-less.

Light, bright and surprisingly very spacious in the context of the ‘baby of the fleet’, ambience was a word that sprang to mind to describe this open-plan saloon which was presented in contrasting American cherry timber, leather upholstery, gelcoat and plush vinyl wall and ceiling panels. But it was the innovation too which caught the eye with the designers combining effectively, practically and compactly, such diverse facets as the galley, the dining area, bar and entertainment facilities and of course the helm station.

The first thing I do when considering the capability of any vessel, is to check out the correlation between accommodation potential – and the galley, dining and ablution provision. The more the accommodation the more ‘accommodating’ the latter three components need to be and I must say I was pleased to see the in house Riviera design team had acted accordingly by providing an ‘appropriate’ self-contained galley to starboard. Features included an electric cook-top, generous bench and cupboard and drawer space, a nice deep sink, a microwave oven and an under-bench refrigerator with freezer compartment.

riviera 3600 sport yacht series ii review

Opposite the galley was an L-shaped full-length leather lounge, crying out in this instance for a dining table that I assume was to be fitted at a later date. Ahead of this was a bulkhead that cleverly, to break this expansive area up, housed the electrically operated rise and fall television.

Opposite this bulkhead of course was the helm station, a decidedly grandiose spectacle in the context of a vessel of this dimension and stature. Particularly impressive was the two-person helm seat, perfect for the ‘mum and dad’ situation, for it was at just the right height and distance from the helm wheel so as to be ergonomically comfortable. Likewise, the electrics, navigational equipment and the Volvo Penta controls were all within easy reach. Especially appreciated were the moulded footrests with teak inlays, which were strategically placed again at just the right height.

riviera 3600 sport yacht series ii review

Décor and creature comforts within the saloon really were particularly impressive, akin to what you would expect to find in a much larger cruiser. Sliding side windows and hatches in the opaque overhead sunroofs provided really good ventilation but if that still didn’t suffice the standard issue of 10kW of reverse-cycle Cruisair air-conditioning ensured the saloon and accommodation areas below were kept at an acceptable temperature. Other features in the saloon included a liquor cabinet and bottle and glass storage drawers, and an entertainment package with the aforementioned electric-lift 22-inch LCD TV and an integrated AM/FM stereo, CD and DVD player. A lovely, cosy, ‘warm’ room!

Accommodation

As stated, this Series II version now features a two-cabin, one bathroom accommodation area below decks. The master stateroom was in the bow in this instance, with the island queen berth (complete with inner spring mattress) complemented by the Cherry woodwork, plush panels and features such as storage drawers under the berth, a portside cedar-lined (nothing was forgotten or compromised) hanging locker, pigeon lockers above the bed, an overhead hatch and if you required it, an optional 15” LCD TV and DVD package.

The one bathroom aboard understandably was ambidextrous, with entry both from the master stateroom and from the companionway. Featured here were items such as a solid surface bench-top with a mirrored vanity cabinet above and a storage locker below, a VacuFlush toilet, an overhead hatch and a separate acceptable sized shower cubicle. The real bonus for me (and of course the guests themselves) was the aft stateroom that Riviera was able to incorporate into the design, as stated courtesy of the extra space accrued by installing the Volvo Penta IPS system. Now don’t get me wrong, this privatised cabin was most certainly not of grandiose ball-room proportions; and no, you could not stand upright anywhere but directly in front of the hanging wardrobe and chest of drawers; but nevertheless, this was still a cabin which very capably satisfied the requirements of a typical ‘family’ style of cabin

riviera 3600 sport yacht series ii review

Aft of this crafted wooden drawer and wardrobe combo was the single fore and aft berth, then alongside and in effect under the cabin sole, was the athwartships double berth. Large hull-side fixed windows provided the natural light while at the same time relieving the potential for claustrophobia, with other features such as wall lighting, storage under the berth, pigeon hole lockers beside the main berth, and a large mirror fitted to the aft bulkhead – added further dimension and style to what was an impressive yes, stateroom.

The Right Credentials

At 11.73m overall and with a generous beam of 3.83m, the 3600 SY Series II boasted Riviera’s typical methodology of a hand-laid GRP hull and a deck and enclosed hardtop structure of a hand-laid composite of GRP and a variety of densities of cores. The displacement figure of 8,900kg suggested to me that the hull was certainly built to last, and certainly that it would be a most rigid and robust structure, an impression that was certainly confirmed when we asked the question of her during the performance part of the test.

Power as we alluded to was a pair of D4, 3.7-litre, inline 4-cylinder 301hp Volvo Penta IPS 400 diesel engines coupled to the IPS pods that ran in this instance the T5 Volvo Penta twin counter-rotating propeller system. For the cynical who raise all the smoke screens in the world as to why you should not use this system, all I can suggest is try one, before you dismiss the idea, for they offer a whole new dimension of handling and manoeuvring – at the flick of a joy-stick and the turn of a wheel.

riviera 3600 sport yacht series ii review

With the IPS system being so very compact, the net result was the engine room also became the ‘mechanical peripherals’ room for there was a sublime amount of space still available for items such as the 800 litres of fuel, the 390 litres of water, the four 200Ah AC Delco batteries which were housed incidentally in special battery boxes in accordance with ABYC (American Boating and Yacht Council) standards, the 12V/60A Victron charger and 750W inverter, the Cruisair reverse cycle air-conditioning system and of course the obligatory ‘Sea Fire’ fire-prevention system.

Interestingly, this was the first time I had experienced the 301hp Volvo IPS versions and I have to say the performance attributes were near on identical to those of the 3600SY’s older brother, the 4400SY which ran the larger 435hp IPS600 versions. The acceleration out of the hole was sublime, the top speed of 31 knots was most impressive, but what won me over was the economical cruise speed of a whopping 29 knots. The 3600Series II Sports Yacht is undeniably the baby of the Riviera fleet but it lacked nothing in terms of finish, presentation, specification and most importantly, performance, handling and efficiency. As far as value for money goes, your money goes a long way; base price for the 3600SY is $519,000 and with the options which included, the coloured topsides, BBQ, the air conditioning split to the aft cabin, the rear awning, the Roman blinds and soft furnishings package and the Raymarine E120 electronics package – the as-tested price of $552,378 must be considered great value for money on today’s market.

3600 Sport Yacht - Running

3600 Sport Yacht Series II with IPS | Model Profile

The 3600 sport yacht, open for your enjoyment.

One of the most striking features of the 3600 Sport Yacht is the large rear awning window and door between the cockpit and saloon. Not only is it extremely stylish with tinted glass set in a bold, highly polished stainless steel frame, it opens up to create the ultimate indoor-outdoor feeling. The two areas seamlessly flow into one to produce a unique alfresco experience.

The fact that the gourmet galley is on the same level as the cockpit and salon also means that the chef remains in the middle of the party. The galley is just a step away from the cockpit and for entertaining there is a second refrigerator here.

At every turn you will find Riviera ingenuity – such as the flat screen television in the saloon that raises and lowers out of sight at the touch of a button, the way the stainless steel swim ladder folds away, and the discreetly placed drink holders on the foredeck sunpad. As for comfort, the large L-shaped lounge with its soft leather and deep cushions is probably more inviting than the lounge in your living room.

The 3600 Sport Yacht epitomises, easy living and an idyllic environment to share leisure time with your family and friends. But this is a yacht of real substance too, one that boasts the most sophisticated design and construction methods including a hand-laid solid fibreglass hull with separate compartments throughout the hull and a watertight collision bulkhead forward.

The 3600 Sport Yacht is powered by the inspired Volvo Penta IPS pod drive system that is exceptionally smooth and quiet whilst unbelievably responsive and fuel-efficient. This may be a new style of motor yacht but the quality and superior technology tells you that it is every inch a Riviera.

Style or good taste may be hard to define but you instantly recognise it when you see it… and you will see it here in abundance. It’s in everything from the subtle colour contrasts of the plush headliner material to the use of a light cherry timber with a satin finish. Even details such as the fabric concealing the saloon speakers and the stylish air conditioning vents have been carefully considered and beautifully executed.

Riviera 3600 Sport Yacht MKII

RIVIERA 3600 SPORT YACHT MKII REVIEW

JUNE, 2009 - Riviera reckons it's the boat that introduced the Sport Yacht concept to Australia and the world. But when we first dipped our toes aboard Riviera's 3600 Sport Yacht in June 2005, we first had to endure a tedious one-hour cruise of the speed-restricted Coomera River. Finally on the Broadwater, we let loose with the twin 310hp Volvo Penta D6 engines. The 3600 Sport Yacht had propeller tunnels to reduce shaft angles and improve efficiency, resulting in a pretty handy turn of speed. The 3600 Sport Yacht, touted as Riviera's first global boat, was the product of input from existing owners, dealers and in-house designers, plus the international marketplace at the time, where boats with lids and shafts were all the rage. But that was five years ago and as the new world attests, a lot can change in the interim. The new 3600 Sport Yacht MkII - pictured in optional blue hull colour, which reduces the bulk of the boat - now boasts longer legs or rather, pod drives courtesy of Volvo Penta Inboard Performance System (IPS). This story is as much about the difference pod drives can make than just the boat we drove. After all, Volvo Penta claims IPS-equipped boats have 15 per cent better acceleration, 30 per cent better cruising range, and up to 50 per cent perceived lower noise and vibration levels than craft equipped with mechanical diesel engines and traditional shaft installations. So it was with a certain degree of enthusiasm that we thrust the fly-by-wire throttles to the dash on the 3600 Sport Yacht MkII. With IPS 400s, the boat has a new hull without prop tunnels. And whoosh! The twin 301hp electronic diesel engines generate performance that's finally more sport than yacht. And to think they are mere four-cylinder donks, too.

SAVE $50 PER HOUR

As a total package, the IPS 400s each weigh 780kg a side compared with 656kg for the former Volvo Penta D6 engines. But then you have to add shafts weighing 23kg each, twin rudders of 40kg each, twin props of 40kg each, a 10kg bowthruster, exhaust system tipping the scales to 5kg each, and the associated drag getting all that through the water. We spoke with Volvo Penta Oceania about the changeover and at the end of the day, there was 150kg of weight saving. So while the IPS offer a better power-to-weight package, it's more the efficiency of the forward-facing propellers and drives that's  responsible for the acceleration. With a touch of trim tab, the holeshot is immediate - be sure to tell the crew to hang on - after which you raise the tabs for a smooth cruise and good views. Of course, there are added benefits to IPS drives, not least being the fact that the engines are located outdoors, under the cockpit sole, accessible at the press of a button, where there would otherwise be a lazarette and/or fuel and water tanks. That means engine noise remains outdoors and not reverberating under your feet in the saloon. And that means the 3600 Sport Yacht MkII is a wonderfully quiet boat. Close the saloon doors and you are cruising as if in a family car. Though there was some blowback of spray when underway, the cockpit is also more agreeable thanks to underwater exhausts and the electronic common rail engines that ensure there's not a whiff of smoke. The other big hook is the Joystick that comes standard on the 3600 Sport Yacht MkII. Prospective new-boat owners are  encouraged to jump aboard a boat like this due to the intuitive docking device. Take command, push the Joystick where you want to go, and the boat follows. Twist the knob on the Joystick and the boat pirouettes. Hit the Boost button and you can drive out of the marina at about four to six knots. Suffice to say, IPS is ideal on boats in share or managed fleets.

  ACCOMMODATION PLANS

But wait, there's more. Relocating the engines aft and shifting the fuel and water amidships means there's more room for accommodation. Whereas the original 3600 Sport Yacht had an aft cabin with twin single beds, the new more accommodating IPS-powered boat has a full-beam aft cabin with a transverse double bed abutting a fixed window to starboard, and a single bed before a fixed window to port. The stateroom is still forward, meanwhile, but with a decent island bed, hanging locker, escape hatch with insect and shade screen, and the option of a separate AV system. Headroom is a high point, as is the en suite/communal bathroom with separate shower stall, Vacuflush loo, but small ventilation hatch. The 390 litres of water should see a family of four live comfortably for a long weekend and with due water preservation, a week. The 80-litre holding tank is on the small side, however, and the sharp leading edge of the grabrail leading down from the saloon needs addressing. Joinery is ubiquitous high-gloss American cherrywood, there was sandstone leather upholstery on the saloon lounge, which is a generous L-shaped number to port. Add a loose table and you create a decent dinette for a family of four. Of course, the 3600 Sport Yacht MkII is air-conditioned, with a standard 18,000 BTU unit servicing the saloon, and the option of a second 16,000 BTU Cruisair for the accommodation. The generator is a 4kW Onan, the onboard batteries are maintenance-free, and the supplied inverter allows silent-ship operation while watching television, a movie or kicking back in a crowded anchorage. Playing on the indoor/outdoor theme, the Sport Yacht has plenty of glass, side opening windows and twin sliding sunroof panels for light and natural ventilation. The signature awning window lifts on gas struts to provide a seamless transition to the cockpit, while practical Amtico flooring makes for easy post-party clean-ups. You can let the kids waltz inside to grab a drink from the aft galley without worrying about their wet feet. We noted a pop-up 55cm NEC flatscreen television to port, with integrated sound system and DVD player, opposite the lower helm station with flip-up bolster seat for two. The dash was graced with upgraded twin Raymarine C120s, stock-standard twin Volvo Penta EDC engine-monitoring panels, analogue engine gauges, Bennett trim tab gauges, and the electronic gear shifts and Joystick. Pantograph wipers ensure the views are clear when cruising in adverse weather. Behind the helm to starboard is the galley module, with solid counters, Sharp convection microwave oven (45 minutes per kilo of fillet beef, plus 15 minutes resting time and your done), fridge and single-burner recessed electric hob. But, really, this is more your weekend prawn or barbecue boat, hence the optional 240V Southern Stainless barbie in the cockpit. In winter, think of it as a reheat-and-eat weekender and bring comfort meals from home. The air-con is, of course, reverse cycle for making things doubly toasty.

  OUTDOOR ENTERTAINING

Despite the apparent Euro design, we see the 3600 Sport Yacht MkII as a thoroughly Australian boat. It's got a big cockpit with fridge and room for assembling a table and chairs and staging lunch. Add a Euro-style awning for shade. The permanently moulded cockpit lounge on the earlier models is now an option. Good move, as cockpit space counts for more. With some rodholders you could easily fish this boat in the morning before you collect the family for the weekend. The deep swim platform adds to the waterfront real estate and lets the kiddies dive off the transom, where the hot-cold deck shower will come in handy after the last swim of the day. The U-shaped stainless steel transom rail is a useful mounting point for a cutting board with rodholders or the barbie. The boot has a 240V outlet, fender baskets and storage for watersports gear. Walkaround decks lead to the bow and sunpad cushion where teenagers will find personal space. The anchoring gear includes a trusty Muir windlass, while the cleats are above-deck types that should assist crew during mooring duties. For a relatively modest Riviera, the 3600 Sport Yacht MkII boasts abundant outdoor/indoor space.

  DRIVE TIME

We opened the hatches and took a considered look at the engineering. But there's not much scope for owner input with the Volvo Penta electronic diesel engines. Sensors let you know if you have to top-up the coolant and oil or there's a water restriction or heating issue. Make a visual inspection, look for leaks, close the hatch, turn the keys, warm the engines, and go. Substantial fuel savings are another big benefit of the IPS 400s over the twin D6s with shafts, says Gavin Rooney from Volvo Penta Oceanis, whose figures show the IPS boat is one knot faster at wide open throttle, jumping to about 33 knots, yet at that  full-throttle setting the owner will enjoy a saving of 42 litres per hour. At $1.17 per litre in Queensland that equates to $2400 in the back pocket after 50 hours of high-speed boating or to put it another way, a saving of $50 per hour if you lean on the pegs. Fuel capacity has been cut back 200 litres to 800 litres compared with earlier 3600s. While the acceleration was brisk and exciting, the boat was more sobering during tight turns. A more impressive part of its handling was the dignified straight-line cruise. At 3000rpm, we averaged about 25kts for 85lt/h, a saving of about 15lt/h over the previous D6 shaft model, according to my calculations. Low-speed cruise of 17 to 18kts was clocked at 2600rpm with a touch of trim tab, while our best speed during trials was 31kts. Interestingly, in the same time frame that Riviera's 3600 Sport Yacht has been on the scene, Volvo Penta has delivered 10,000 IPS units since the product was first introduced to the market in 2005. Locally, Volvo Penta Oceania is selling some 60 per cent of all-new engines as IPS pod drives. Since the Sydney International Boat Show in 2007, Riviera had fitted 176 Volvo Penta IPS packages. Pods are on the march. Hopefully, Riviera is again one day, too.

Moscow State Symphony brings muscle to choice program at Kravis Center

By Lawrence Budmen

Pavel Kogan conducted the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra Wednesday afternoon at the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach.

Pavel Kogan conducted the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra Wednesday afternoon at the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach.

Russian orchestras usually present formulaic programs when touring, especially in South Florida. An overture or ballet suite will be followed by a Tchaikovsky or Rachmaninoff concerto as a showcase for the soloist. Then the performance will conclude with one of Tchaikovsky’s last three symphonies or Rachmaninoff’s 2nd or Shostakovich’s 5th Symphony—flashy scores guaranteed to generate cheers.

The Moscow State Symphony took a refreshingly different approach for its Regional Arts series concert Wednesday afternoon at the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach. The blockbuster concerto was indeed played but it was surrounded by an early Rachmaninoff curio and a grandly romantic symphony by the young Alexander Scriabin.

Subtlety is not this orchestra’s strong point. It makes a big corporate sound and seldom plays a true pianissimo. While not quite in the top tier of Russian ensembles, it is several levels above many of the uneven Russian orchestras that have played South Florida in recent seasons.

The strings produce a sizable, dark tone. Winds display that veiled sonority that is typical in many Russian and Eastern European orchestras but the flute and clarinet principals are first rate. The brass are especially well blended, bereft of the raucousness that characterized many Soviet era orchestras.

Pavel Kogan, son of the famed violinist Leonid Kogan, has been the orchestra’s music director since 1989 and he is the perfect conductor for this group. Leading with an unusually long baton, Kogan is a fiery presence on the podium. He brings out this orchestra’s gleam and tonal power for all it is worth.

The program opened with The Rock, a brief tone poem by the twenty-year-old Rachmaninoff. The nine-minute score is dedicated to Rimsky-Korsakov (one of Rachmaninoff’s teachers) and much of the work sounds like rejected outtakes from that composer’s Scheherazade or Antar Symphony. Kogan managed to bring a degree of coherence to a rather episodic essay by a composer who has not yet found his voice.

Dmitry Masleev

Dmitry Masleev

Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor served as a vehicle for Dmitry Masleev, top prize winner of the Tchaikovsky Competition in 2015. This was no ordinary traversal of an oft-programmed warhorse. Playing at competition standard, Masleev charged through the first movement, displaying a steel-fingered monster technique. His playing was not merely a metronomic display at top volume. There was a visceral charge to his performance that made one sit up and listen. He brought Lisztian fury to the first movement cadenza and the barn-burning Allegro con fuoco finale was fleet indeed.

Yet Masleev could also produce finely shaded soft tones and he made the melodic lines of the Andantino semplice really sing. Kogan’s clear beat kept the ensemble in pace with Masleev, which was no small accomplishment, and his detailing of the wind lines was especially strong.

Masleev had the usually unresponsive Kravis matinee audience on their feet cheering and he responded with a transcription of the “Elegy” from Shostakovich’s Ballet Suite No. 3 as an encore. Playing with surprising delicacy, he beautifully dovetailed the haunting melody in the right hand with Chopinesque filigree in the left. Definitely an über virtuoso, Masleev clearly has many facets and it will be interesting to hear him in less flamboyant works.

Scriabin was one of music’s most original creative artists but his Symphony No. 2 in C minor predates his experiments with atonality, mysticism and tonal synesthesia. The five movement, 47-minute work owes much to the  symphonic tradition of Tchaikovsky. Yet an original voice lurks beneath the thick string textures and brass chorales. There are moments when overt bombast holds sway but there is much inspired melodic writing and superb orchestration in this rarely played work which is clearly superior to the symphonies of Glazunov or Glière which sometimes find their way onto orchestral programs.

The richly burnished tone of Evgeny Solovey’s clarinet captured the melancholy aura of the initial Andante. In the second movement Allegro, Kogan marshaled his forces to pile one climax upon another. The shimmer of Aleey Mazur’s flute against enveloping strings melded into  a full-scale  romantic melody right out of Hollywood in the best sense during the third movement. Kogan whipped up a pounding storm in the Tempestoso. The brass fanfare that opens the final Maestoso is a transformation of the moody theme that opened the symphony. Kogan’s full-throttle reading avoided vulgarity while highlighting his ensemble’s corporate impact and color.

For encores Kogan offered an unabashedly brash version of the Waltz from the Masquerade Suite by Khachaturian that did not attempt elegance where there was none and a witty, mock big-band romp through Shostakovich’s Tahiti Trot (after Vincent Youmans’ “Tea for Two”).

The Regional Arts Concert Series continues with pianist Vadym Kholodenko playing Tchaikovsky’s Sonata in G Major and Theme and Variations in F minor, and Scriabin’s Two Poèmes, and Sonatas Nos. 4 and 5 December 4 at 2 p.m. at the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach.  kravis.org

riviera 3600 sport yacht series ii review

Presentation A personal detailed review for May, into one of my preferred 11 metre sports cruisers the Rivera 3600 Sport Yacht. Renowned and largest Australian yacht builder, Riviera got a strong fame for building seaworthy, well built sport fisherman cruisers and yachts in over 25 years, so when the Australian builder went to built a modern hard top cruiser, everyone was curious of the out come.

We spent most of the review day at eight knots or so and it felt great. But for those who do care, the Riviera will happily cruise at 26 knots burning 95 litres per hour or 3.7 litres per mile; which is pretty economical. At eight knots, though, that drops to a lovable 0.78 per mile. Lowdown.
