There’s no denying that the phenomenon of the moment, when it comes to having fun, is foiling boats (as Checco Bruni told us himself in this article). In the wake of the latest editions of the America’s Cup, flying boats, especially in the dinghy segment, have become increasingly widespread. On one or two hulls, with one or more foils, more or less easy to fly, single or crewed.

We have selected for you 12 flying boats with which to enter the world of foils or with which to try and perfect your skills. We also tell you how much they cost and the “difficulty of flight” (XXX: difficult; XX: medium; X: easy). The only common denominator is that they are great fun!

Birdyfish – 4,7 m – For foiling beginners

Flying difficulty:   X

barche foiling Birdyfish

The ideal boat for learning to sail foils, even for beginners. Very few trim adjustments for foils allow you to enjoy all the excitement and joy of flying. The crew will only have to deal with sail trimming. The appendages with a soft-angled L guarantee take-off from 10 knots of wind. The shape of the bow works well even in waves. Price: 16,980 euros.

Flo1 – 4.25 m

Flying difficulty:  X

barche foiling Flo1

An interesting single to approach and perfect in the world of small foilers before moving on to more sophisticated craft. Produced by the Dutch company Aeronamics, it has a soft, almost C-shaped foil. There is no adjustment of the rake of the appendages but only its extension in the water, which makes the “trim” of these appendages easy and intuitive after just a few trips. Top speeds are around 20 knots. Price: 15,495 euros.

NACRA F20 – 6,20 m – Like America’s Cup cats

Flying difficulty:  XXX

small foiling sailboats for sale

The Nacra yard, which specializes in open catamarans and produces the Nacra 17 Olympic class, has fitted its F 20 model with a “Flight Control System” to make it fly. The Nacra 20 FCS was designed by Pete Melvin and Gino Morelli, the authors of the 2013 America’s Cup rulebook, and its foils are reminiscent of those on the AC72 in San Francisco. A very physical boat and not for everyone. Price: 34,000 euro.

Foiling Dinghy – 3,86 m – Small and versatile

barche foiling Foiling Dinghy

It weighs 30 kilos and can be foiled as early as seven knots of wind. The Foiling Dinghy is equipped with an inverted T rudder and a pair of curved foils that act as both lifting and straightening foils, with an automatic management system. The foils have a few simple adjustments depending on what you want to achieve (more flying or more straightening). Price: 15,500 euros including taxes.

Moth – 3,35 m – The foiling cult dinghy

barche foiling Moth

The progenitor of the flying dinghies is still one of the most complete single foilers on the market today. Suitable mainly for advanced sailors who already have experience on foils, it has appendages that offer multiple setting options and the possibility of being changed according to wind strength. The international class is one of the most active and always organizes very crowded races. Cult product. Price: from 20,000 euros.

Peacoq 14 – 4.70 m – Like a flying Fireball

Flying difficulty:  XX

barche foiling Peacoq14

With a hull that is vaguely reminiscent of the old Fireballs with a “cut” bow, the Peacoq 14, an evolution of the Club version, is a dinghy that can be a compromise for both novice and experienced foil sailors. In fact, the dinghies can be operated in automatic trim, or more experienced sailors can adjust their angle for maximum performance. Price: quote on request.

Persico 69F – 6,9 m – The trendy boat

barche foiling Persico 69F

This concept boat is the brainchild of the Italian racing elite (Giorgio Benussi, Dede de Luca, “l’oriundo” Maciel Cicchetti) and was designed by Argentineans Wilson and Marquinez. Flying the 69F is not too difficult, although it does require a good physique and strength in the arms, especially for the mainsail trimmer and the foil adjuster. The racing circuit has now been launched with an attractive programme. Price: rented by the season.

Skeeta – 3,35 m – Easy for anyone

barche foiling skeeta

Ease first. The idea behind Skeeta is the same as that of many other small foilers: to make this type of wing easy and open to everyone. Skeeta is a single glider that flies on two self-regulating appendages, not particularly technical to fly but still very high performance, with the particular shape of the hull that distinguishes all Quant models. Price: 15,345 euros.

Stunt S9 – 4,16 m – The Italian Foiling cat

barche foiling Stunt S9

This is an all-Italian One Design catamaran that can be sailed as a single with just a mainsail or even a jib depending on the weather conditions. Like other catamarans, to improve stability in flight, it moves on four submerged appendages. Physically it requires a certain amount of athleticism, also because there is a trapeze, but with a little training it can be suitable for a wide audience. Price: 16,600 euros.

Ufo – 3,00 m – Flying with two hulls

barche foiling ufo

This small catamaran is equipped with a sensor that self-adjusts the inclination of the single central foil, coupled to the T of the rudder. It can take off even in light winds thanks to the lightness of its construction. The cat is quite easy to sail, suitable even for sailors who do not have much experience with foils.

The official european dealer for Foiling UFO is  Sea-Change . Price:  8.980 euros + VAT

Waszp – 3,35 m – For the whole family

Waszp barche foiling

Very similar to the Moth, but with one big difference: the Waszp is a monotype, it is not made of carbon and the appendages being monotyped cannot be changed. For this reason it is less expensive than the Moth, even if it does perform somewhat less well. It is considered by many to be an ideal “family” boat because it is fun for both young and old. The foil adjustment system is managed by a sensor, but it is possible to set the appendages and modify some adjustments. Price: 12,200 euros.

Whisper – 5,40 m – Full performance

barche foiling whisper

As light as the highest performing Cats, it features a one-piece, non-removable platform that provides great structural rigidity. Equipped with the four classic self-adjusting appendages, it is able to set sail in light breezes with a certain ease. It is a double, with trapeze, mainsail, jib and gennaker, fast even in light winds. Physically demanding. Price: 26,900 euros.

THAT FLIES ALONE

Extended version on your desktop computer

A foiler designed for any sailor.

Toni Blanc, Mothquito, Foiling, IFS foiling, IFS increased foiling system, sistema foils

The idea was to create a SIT & FLY foiler, that is to say a boat with foils that practically flew alone, and endow it with an exceptional stability so that any sailor could fly easily, regardless of their physical or technical preparation, also allowing them to access into the competition with foils so far suitable for only a few specialists.

The mothquito foiling catamaran perfectly meets this objective. proof of this is that none of our riders had ever flown on a boat with foils before and as you will see in the videos they all fly without any difficulty. , i sincerely believe that it is the best guarantee that the mothquito is made for you., you will soon be able to try it for yourself. happy flight.

Designer and CEO:

IFS Foiling & MOTHQUITO

THE BOAT THAT FLIES ALONE

The Mothquito Foiling Catamaran is the first foiler in the world with an increased dynamic stability and performance, by the IFS system, a system that increases its dynamic length and beam to make foiling easy, safe and fun for any sailor.

Due to this system, the Mothquito surprises with its great stability, both at take-off and during flight, requiring the crew member simply the same physical effort that would be required to sail in any conventional dinghy boat without trapeze and without the need for a special technique.

In the Mothquito you just have to sit down to sail and the boat will practically will flies alone.

For all these reasons, the Mothquito is an easy and suitable foiler for all types of sailors, a true SIT & FLY.

At the same time, it can be a fundamental tool for schools and training centers, which are increasingly in demand for easy-to-fly, stable, yet fast and fun foilers.

But make no mistake, the Mothquito is more than just a docile and stable foiler. The Mothquito is a high performance catamaran racer. With a dynamic beam in flight of 4.8 m2, this boat manages to significantly increase its righting moment, which allows it to have a sail area of 17.5 m2 in its basic configuration, to launch the boat at high speeds without heeling or feeling of risk.

With mothquito you don`t need:.

Previous experience.

Specific technical training.

Special physical preparation.

Navigate against heeling as in the Moth.

Hang on a trapeze compromising your safety.

Height sensors and flaps to regulate the flight height, since its V foils automatically regulate the height.

Increasing the dynamic length:

You increase longitudinal stability, improving dynamic longitudinal trim in flight and reducing the risk of nose dive and pitch poles., increasing the dynamic beam:, increased transverse stability is achieved, increasing righting moment and performance, with a significant reduction in heeling., that is why mothquito marks a before and after, a new concept in the world of foiling which is summarized in a single expression:, sit & fly.

With Mothquito you know how.

BACKGROUNDS

As foiling progresses, more and more fans and sailors want to experience the sensation of flying, even if only once.

But the reality is that many of them are in doubt as to whether they will be able to fly continuously and controlled, since flying these machines does not seem as easy as sitting down.

In many cases, it requires significant physical preparation and endurance to be able to keep the balance in flight based on counter-heeling, making counter balance and playing with the mainsail sheet hunting and molding to maintain balance and not repeatedly go overboard.

In other cases, as in the majority of catamarans, it will be necessary to hang on the trapezoid to reduce the heeling, and at high speeds the maneuvers are very fast and precise, so the risk in these circumstances does not It exactly coincides with the idea of enjoy it.

In summary we can group the current foilers into 3 large groups:

They are small foilers, monohull or multihull, for a single handed and they have a central inverted T-foil and another inverted T-foil in rudder on the same line. When they are monohull, flying on these boats without falling into the water is not easy. You have to establish a continuous balance by flying against heeling and keep your balance playing with the main sheet, and your weight.

In the case of multihulls, the outer hulls act as a float to stop preventing the overturns, as the small lateral wheels do on a bicycle when the child learns. but this solution does not eliminate the difficulty of the flight and slows down the speed of the boat every time the float enters into the water. they also use flaps with mechanical height sensors to control the flight height, and therefore require care and maintenance., they are dinghy catamarans for single or double handed and have four inverted t-foils., with a dynamic beam of around 2.5 m, which usually coincides with their hull beam, these foilers are much more stable than the 2t foils, but in them the use of trapezoids is usually common to compensate the heeling, which not everyone likes and less at high speeds., they also use flaps with mechanical height sensors to control the flight height, and therefore require care and maintenance., 2j + 2t foils, they are high-performance catamarans, of greater length and for more than two or three crew. it is common to see them compete on international circuits. their main foils are in j, which is the same as an underwater v when the boat heels, so they regulate the flight height without the need for flaps. they are very technical boats that require a lot of training and good physical shape. in addition they are not affordable since their price is usually not within the reach of every pockets..

options and accessories

Rig options.

Option: Fiberfoam Carbon mast, 7.5m, iFLY specific design, based on a-class design : 2.400 €

  • by choosing this option, the iFLY serial mast (black anodized aluminum) is replaced by a high-tech Fiberfoam carbon mast. The carbon mast reduces weight by 4.7kg and increases sailing performance. However, the carbon mast is not recommended for double trapezing

Option: separable mast : 490 €

  • The joint is made with a massive carbon sleeve inside. We did not observe any performance loss. The upper 2.25m of the mast can be taken off within seconds. No tools needed. It can be done without removing shrouds or diamonds and allows solving storage problems. Further this option can reduce shipping cost e.g. for overseas transport. Some sailors with height restrictions in the port or on their way to the water solve this by reducing thus the boat hight to 5.8m.

Option: Softwing rig for highest performance : 2.400 €

  • iFLY is delivered with a state of the art decksweeper rig (like this year’s A-class sails). By choosing this option, the standard sail is replaced by the Heru Softwing rig: a three-dimensional structure bringing performance gains. Very different than a solid wing (as used e.g. in AC50 / C-Class) the softwing is not fragile and can be rolled and hoisted like a standard sail. It is watertight and thus floating, making righting up after a capsize even easier.

Mainsail halyard : 270 €

  • iFLY comes with a push up main sail hoisting system (A-class style). Sailors who choose the standard decksweeper sail are free to choose the hoisting system they love more. For boats configured with the Softwing, halyard is strongly recommended.

auxiliary head sail for early take off in light winds. The revolutionary lightwind headsail. New developed sail configuration based on Genoa/Code0:

  • The CodeF is a light wind head-sail used from 0 to 10 knots. This sail is used both, upwind and downwind, to get earlier on the foils. It is stowed away if wind picks up. CodeF is an option for super light wind. Usually You will sail the iFLY15 just with the mainsail.

CodeF preparation : 560 €

  • riveted and screwed cleats, lamination in hull: bow tube. CodeF preparation is needed for CodeF sailing. The option should be ordered, in case CodeF kit will be added later.

CodeF premium option: surcharge : 580 €

  • High-end version of CodeF, made from a kevlar fiber laminate

Second set of length adjustable trapeze, for double trapezing: surcharge : 220 € (per piece)

  • Double trapezing is not recommended with carbon mast.
  • Massive increase of righting moment allows performance gains of up to 25%, especially when full foiling upwind

Foot strap, length adjustable, including assembly (per piece) :  69 €

Telescopic carbon tiller stick, surcharge:   210 €

TF10 Foiling Trimaran

Ultra-modern, morrelli & melvin design, craftsmanship, wij bouwen uw nieuwe foiling boot, the tf10 trimaran: the foiling flying machine.

After the foiling revolution, the TF10 foiling trimaran is now the evolution of foiling sailing. With the TF10 foiling trimaran, sailing and foiling can be reached by any sailor. The TF10 is an 11 m long one-design foiling trimaran, designed by the famous yacht designers Morrelli & Melvin . The TF10 is built and sold by DNA Performance Sailing.

The TF10 is suitable for a crew of 4-5 persons and can handle a wide range of sailing conditions. The construction consists of pre-preg carbon fibers with a Nomex honeycomb core. This provides a lightweight, yet safe and robust construction. The foiling TF10 trimaran is the perfect foiling boat for both pleasure trips and sailing fast in races.

The transport of the TF10 is also revolutionary: when folded, it is easy to transport. We supply the TF10 with a specially designed road trailer, launching by boat ramp or crane are both possible.

Foils create sailing comfort

Thanks to the sophisticated design, every sailor feels comfortable on the TF10 foiling trimaran. Regardless of age, gender or muscle strength. And regardless of the speed, which can quickly reach up to 30 knots! Safety and comfort were the two main focuses of the design. This is reflected in a number of elements:

  • The bow is designed to cut through the waves. This results in less hits on waves, which greatly increases sailing comfort.
  • The carbon benches with back support provide a comfortable seat for crew and helmsman.
  • The wishbone boom (half windsurfer boom) provides the decksweeper mainsail layout to perform at its best. An additional advantage is that in a manoeuvre the sail is now the lowest point and not the carbon boom.
  • A ‘Semi-ridged’ carbon fibre trampoline cloth has been specially designed to make the boat’s construction torsional stiff. It makes it easier to walk on and block’s splashing water from the foils.
  • The TF10’s foils and T-rudders minimize pitch and roll movements. The rake angle of all four foils is adjusted with electric actuators. This system improves comfort and safety during sailing and foiling.

TF10 hydrofoils

The TF10 foiling trimaran flies with a 4-point foil setup:

  • The T-rudders with horizontal elevators generate lift and/or downforce.
  • The so called Z-type daggerboard foils provide the necessary lift to be able to foil.
  • The advantage of the 4-point-foil setup is that the crew does not have to pick up the daggerboards during manoeuvres. This significantly reduces the crew’s actions.
  • In addition, we have electric actuators that change the position of the foils and rudders with a single push on the button.
  • The design of the Z-foils has already been very successfully applied to other foiling multihulls, such as the A-cats and the Olympic Nacra 17.

See and feel the future of sailing. The TF10 foiling trimaran is here!

This special foiling trimaran was designed at the end of 2015. The idea was to make a foiling multihull that anybody can sail and foil with. A foiling boat equipped with the same technology as the boats at the America’s Cup.

The TF10 and its sailing class is the result of initiatives by a group of five sailing friends on the East Coast of America (Newport, RI). They have joined forces and created the TF10 sailing class.

The members of the TF10 Class Association have lot’s of experience in various one-design racing series. The goal is to create a racing series that is as exciting, honest and fun as the boat itself.

Morrelli & Melvin designed a trimaran to combine the specific characteristics of a trimaran with foiling. The trimaran’s center hull offers important advantages here: its buoyancy and pitch stability eliminate the risk of ‘nose diving’ or ‘pitch poling’. In the design briefing, wind range and sea state (short sea shipping) were important. The design of the TF10 is based on this.

For all information, competitions and the latest news, please visit the TF10 Class website: www.TF10class.com

It is possible to make a trial run with the TF10. We do this on the IJsselmeer, just a few kilometres from DNA’s shipyard. Here the sailing and foiling conditions are perfect: There is always wind and you can fully enjoy the beautiful surroundings. The IJsselmeer lies between the cities of Lelystad, Almere and Enkhuizen. The new island area “Markerwadden” can also be seen and possibly visited here. Mail us at [email protected]

About the 69F

Persico 69F is a mono-hull foiling sailboat designed by the Argentinian firm Wilson-Marquinez to offer to the widest possible sailing public a small foiler, using a concept borrowed from the AC75, the new boat for the 36th America’s Cup. The prototype has already sailed for numerous days on Lake Garda, where it has been tested by top-ranked sailors, among whom the Olympics multiple medal-winner Santiago Lange, a living legend in the sport of sailing. Santi Lange has also taken on the initiative of starting an academy to popularize sailing on foils and train teams to participate in the new Persico 69F regattas circuit. Persico Marine’s competence in the yacht racing field is renowned at the world level. For the innovative 69F, the firm has availed itself of its specific know-how acquired from the series production of VO65s, the larger advanced high-performance One Design boats currently sailing. Moreover, on the subject of state-of-the-art one-design crafts, Persico Marine is the Official Supplier of the famous foil arms for the next America’s Cup, to be held in Auckland in 2021. These parts, which are used to keep the AC75s up on their foils, have been supplied to all teams and are absolutely identical in all respects.

The Persico 69F has been created as a strict one-design boat where the true test when racing is between crews and not boats and equipment. The fundamental objective of these rules is to ensure that this concept is maintained.

As indicated by its name, the Persico 69F is 6.90 metres in length. The canoe body is made of extremely light carbon fibre and shows a form stability that allows the new craft to fill the current gap between the highest performing displacement boats and a true foiling boat. Designed for a crew of 3, the 69F is fitted with a couple of racks with seats to facilitate handling and for a safer sailing, a V-shaped foil, a T-shaped rudder, a daggerboard system and 40 square metres of sail area (45 sqm code 0) which already at 7 knots can lift the boat’s weight of only 380 kg. If there is a mixed-gender crew, it would be possible to sail with 4 people.

Persico 69F hulls, appendages, rigs and sails are manufacturing controlled.

10 Best Small Sailboats (Under 20 Feet)

Best Small Sailboats Under 20 Feet | Life of Sailing

Last Updated by

Daniel Wade

December 28, 2023

Compact, easy to trailer, simple to rig, easy to maintain and manage, and affordable, the best small boats all have one thing in common: they offer loads of fun while out there on the water.

So whether you're on a budget or just looking for something that can offer ultimate daytime rides without compromising on safety, aesthetic sensibilities, alternate propulsion, and speed, the best small sailboats under 20 feet should be the only way to go.

Let's be brutally honest here; not everyone needs a 30-foot sailboat to go sailing. They come with lots of features such as electronics, entertainment, refrigeration, bunks, a galley, and even a head. But do you really need all these features to go sailing? We don't think so.

All you need to go sailing is a hull, a mast, rudder, and, of course, a sail. And whether you refer to them as daysailers, trailerable sailboats , a weekender sailboat, or pocket cruisers, there's no better way to enjoy the thrills of coastal sailing than on small sailboats.

There are a wide range of small boats measuring less than 20 feet available in the market. These are hot products in the market given that they offer immense thrills out on the sea without the commitment required to cruise on a 30-footer. A small sailboat will not only give you the feel of every breeze but will also give you the chance to instantly sense every change in trim.

In this article, we'll highlight 10 best small sailboats under 20 feet . Most models in this list are time-tested, easy to rig, simple to sail, extremely fun, and perfect either for solo sailing or for sailing with friends and family. So if you've been looking for a list of some of the best small sailboats , you've come to the right place.

So without further ado, let's roll on.

Table of contents

{{boat-info="/boats/hunter-15"}}

The Marlow-Hunter 15 is not only easy to own since it's one of the most affordable small sailboats but also lots of fun to sail. This is a safe and versatile sailboat for everyone. Whether you're sailing with your family or as a greenhorn, you'll love the Hunter 15 thanks to its raised boom, high freeboard, and sturdy FRP construction.

With high sides, a comfortable wide beam, a contoured self-bailing cockpit, and fiberglass construction, the Hunter 15 is certainly designed with the novice sailor in mind. This is why you can do a lot with this boat without falling out, breaking it, or capsizing. Its contoured self-baiting cockpit will enable you to find a fast exit while its wide beam will keep it steady and stable no matter what jibes or weight shifts happen along the way.

This is a small sailboat that can hold up to four people. It's designed to give you a confident feeling and peace of mind even when sailing with kids. It's easy to trailer, easy to rig, and easy to launch. With a price tag of about $10k, the Hunter 15 is a fun, affordable, and versatile boat that is perfect for both seasoned sailors and novices. It's a low-maintenance sailboat that can be great for teaching kids a thing or two about sailing.

Catalina 16.5

{{boat-info="/boats/catalina-16-5"}}

Catalina Yachts are synonymous with bigger boats but they have some great and smaller boats too such as Catalina 16.5. This is one of the best small sailboats that are ideal for family outings given that it has a big and roomy cockpit, as well as a large storage locker. Designed with a hand-laminated fiberglass sloop, the Catalina 16.5 is versatile and is available in two designs: the centerboard model and the keel model.

The centerboard model is designed with a powerful sailplane that remains balanced as a result of the fiberglass centerboard, the stable hull form, and the rudder. It also comes with a tiller extension, adjustable hiking straps, and adjustable overhaul. It's important to note that these are standard equipment in the two models.

As far as the keel model is concerned, this is designed with a high aspect keel as the cast lead and is attached with stainless steel keel bolts, which makes this model perfect for mooring or docking whenever it's not in use. In essence, the centerboard model is perfect if you'll store it in a trailer while the keel model can remain at the dock.

All in all, the Catalina 16.5 is one of the best small sailboats that you can get your hands on for as low as $10,000. This is certainly a great example of exactly what a daysailer should be.

{{boat-info="/boats/hobie-16"}}

There's no list of small, trailerable, and fun sailboats that can be complete without the inclusion of the classic Hobie 16. This is a durable design that has been around and diligently graced various waters across the globe since its debut way back in 1969 in Southern California. In addition to being durable, the Hobie 16 is trailerable, great for speed, weighs only 320 pounds, great for four people, and more importantly, offers absolute fun.

With a remarkable figure of over 100,000 launched since its debut, it's easy to see that the Hobie 16 is highly popular. Part of this popularity comes from its asymmetric fiberglass-and-foam sandwiched hulls that include kick-up rudders. This is a great feature that allows it to sail up to the beach.

For about $12,000, the Hobie 16 will provide you with endless fun throughout the summer. It's equipped with a spinnaker, trailer, and douse kit. This is a high-speed sailboat that has a large trampoline to offer lots of space not just for your feet but also to hand off the double trapezes.

Montgomery 17

{{boat-info="/boats/montgomery-17"}}

Popularly known as the M-17, The Montgomery 17 was designed by Lyle C. Hess in conjunction with Jerry Montgomery in Ontario, California for Montgomery Boats. Designed either with keel or centerboard models, the M-17 is more stable than most boats of her size. This boat is small enough to be trailered but also capable of doing moderate offshore passages.

This small sailboat is designed with a masthead and toe rail that can fit most foresails. It also has enough space for two thanks to its cuddly cabin, which offers a sitting headroom, a portable toilet, a pair of bunks, a DC power, and optional shore, and a proper amount of storage. That's not all; you can easily raise the deck-stepped mast using a four-part tackle.

In terms of performance, the M-17 is one of the giant-killers out there. This is a small sailboat that will excel in the extremes and make its way past larger boats such as the Catalina 22. It glides along beautifully and is a dog in light air, though it won't sail against a 25-knot wind, which can be frustrating. Other than that, the Montgomery 17 is a great small sailboat that can be yours for about $14,000.

Norseboat 17.5

{{boat-info="/boats/norseboat-17-5"}}

As a versatile daysailer, Norseboat 17.5 follows a simple concept of seaworthiness and high-performance. This small sailboat perfectly combines both contemporary construction and traditional aesthetics. Imagine a sailboat that calls itself the "Swiss Army Knife of Boats!" Well, this is a boat that can sail and row equally well.

Whether you're stepping down from a larger cruiser or stepping up from a sea kayak, the unique Norseboat 17.5 is balanced, attractive, and salty. It has curvaceous wishbone gaff, it is saucy, and has a stubby bow-sprit that makes it attractive to the eyes. In addition to her beauty, the Norseboat 17.5 offers an energy-pinching challenge, is self-sufficient, and offers more than what you're used to.

This is a small, lightweight, low-maintenance sailboat that offers a ticket to both sailing and rowing adventures all at the same time. At about 400 pounds, it's very portable and highly convenient. Its mainsails may look small but you'll be surprised at how the boat is responsive to it. With a $12,500 price tag, this is a good small sailboat that offers you the versatility to either row or sail.

{{boat-info="/boats/sage-marine-sage-17"}}

If you've been looking for a pocket cruiser that inspires confidence, especially in shoal water, look no further than the Sage 17. Designed by Jerry Montgomery in 2009, the Sage 17 is stable and should heel to 10 degrees while stiffening up. And because you want to feel secure while sailing, stability is an integral feature of the Sage 17.

This is a sailboat that will remain solid and stable no matter which part of the boat you stand on. Its cabin roof and the balsa-cored carbon-fiber deck are so strong that the mast doesn't require any form of compression post. The self-draining cockpit is long enough and capable of sleeping at 6 feet 6 inches.

The Sage 17 may be expensive at $25k but is a true sea warrior that's worth look at. This is a boat that will not only serve you right but will also turn heads at the marina.

{{boat-info="/boats/laserperformance-laser-sb3"}}

Having been chosen as the overall boat of the year for 2008 by the Sailing World Magazine, the Laser SB3 is one of the coolest boats you'll ever encounter. When sailing upwind, this boat will lock into the groove while its absolute simplicity is legendary. In terms of downwind sailing, having this boat will be a dream come true while it remains incredibly stable even at extraordinary speed.

Since its debut in 2004, the Laser SB3 has surged in terms of popularity thanks to the fact that it's designed to put all the controls at your fingertips. In addition to a lightweight mast, its T- bulb keel can be hauled and launched painlessly. For about $18,000, the Laser SB3 ushers you into the world of sports sailing and what it feels to own and use a sports boat.

{{boat-info="/boats/fareast-18"}}

As a manufacturer, Fareast is a Chinese boat manufacturer that has been around for less than two decades. But even with that, the Fareast 18 remains a very capable cruiser-racer that will take your sailing to the next level. In addition to its good looks, this boat comes with a retractable keel with ballast bulb, a powerful rig, and an enclosed cabin.

Its narrow design with a closed stern may be rare in sailboats of this size, but that's not a problem for the Fareast 18. This design not only emphasizes speed but also makes it a lot easier to maintain this boat. Perfect for about 6 people, this boat punches above its weight. It's, however, designed to be rigged and launched by one person.

This is a relatively affordable boat. It's agile, safe, well-thought-out, well built, and very sporty.

{{boat-info="/boats/chuck-paine-paine-14"}}

If you're in the market looking for a small sailboat that offers contemporary performance with classic beauty, the Paine 14 should be your ideal option. Named after its famous designer, Chuck Paine, this boat is intentionally designed after the classic Herreshoff 12.5 both in terms of dimensions and features.

This is a lightweight design that brings forth modern fin keel and spade rudder, which makes it agile, stable, and faster. The Paine 14 is built using cold-molded wood or west epoxy. It has varnished gunnels and transoms to give it an old-time charm. To make it somehow modern, this boat is designed with a carbon mast and a modern way to attach sails so that it's ready to sail in minutes.

You can rest easy knowing that the Paine 14 will not only serve you well but will turn heads while out there.

{{boat-info="/boats/wd-schock-lido-14"}}

Many sailors will attest that their first sailing outing was in a Lido 14. This is a classic sailboat that has been around for over four decades and still proves to be a perfect match to modern small boats, especially for those still learning the ropes of sailing.

With seating for six people, the Lido 14 can be perfect for solo sailing , single-handed sailing, or if you're planning for shorthanded sailing. While new Lido 14 boats are no longer available, go for a functional used Lido 14 and you'll never regret this decision. It will serve you well and your kids will probably fall in love with sailing if Lido 14 becomes their main vessel during weekends or long summer holidays.

Bottom Line

There you have it; these are some of the best small sailboats you can go for. While there are endless small sailboats in the market, the above-described sailboat will serve you right and make you enjoy the wind.

Choose the perfect sailboat, invest in it, and go out there and have some good fun!

Best hydrofoil boats: 6 of the most spectacular foiling motorboats money can buy

  • Electric boats
  • Top stories

Foiling technology has really taken off in the past few years. We pick out 6 of the best hydrofoil boats you can buy right now…

With its roots in the 19th century, foiling technology is as old as the hills, but in the past five years we’ve noticed an explosion of hydrofoil boats coming onto the market.

In part inspired by the foiling raceboats of the America’s Cup , the popularity of foiling is easy to understand – fuel efficiency gains are substantial, noise is almost eliminated (particularly if your foiling boat also happens to be an electric boat ) and they look as cool as a snowman in a freezer!

To help you understand the dizzying array of foiling boats available right now, we’ve put together the following guide to what we think are the most promising designs out there.

6 of the best hydrofoil boats

SEAir flying RIB

SEAir foiling RIB

Founded in 2016, French yard SEAir builds foiling RIBs, having been inspired by the speed of foiling racing yachts.

We tested their 5.5m model back in 2018 and since then they have expanded their range to cover superyacht chase boats, commercial and military vessels.

Our tester recorded a top speed of 32 knots, with the foils doing their best work at around 20 knots, but SEAir claims that 42 knots is possible in the right conditions.

Enata Foiler

Dubai-based Enata Marine added a healthy dose of glamour to the world of foiling boats in 2018 with the launch of its Foiler.

In addition to a superyacht tender-worthy exterior, this 32fter includes a bow window for spectacular views while underway.

A 40-knot top speed and a 190nm range makes this a very appealing option, although the premium price tag of $938,000 may put some off.

Princess R35

When British boatbuilding giant Princess Yachts got in on the foiling boat game in 2019 with a 35ft carbon-fibre dayboat, we knew that things had really taken off.

While the foil-assisted R35 may not have the spectacular cruising-above-the-waves appeal of some other foiling boats, it is highly efficient, beautifully designed (in collaboration with Pininfarina) and handles like nothing else we’ve ever driven.

In our review, we praised its rare combination of agility, refinement and stability, with spray kept in check impressively at high speeds.

The foiling Candela C-8 is the first boat to use Candela’s proprietary C-POD, but bigger craft will follow later

Candela C-8

Swedish firm Candela burst onto the scene in 2021 with its debut, the Candela C-7 , which was billed as the world’s first electric foiling boat, but it was the 2022 launch of the Candela C-8 that really moved the game on.

Available with a 69kWh battery, adapted from the Polestar 2 electric car, owners can expect a range of 57nm at 22 knots, more than enough for dayboat use.

The consumption figures are truly staggering, with Candela’s figures suggesting that the C-8 is more than 12x more efficient than an equivalent 300hp outboard powered sportsboat.

The electric Iguana is capable of three knots on the land and 30 knots at sea

Iguana Foiler

Not content with being at the forefront of the amphibious boats market with its caterpillar-track offering, French yard Iguana has set its sights on the world of foiling too.

Announced last year, the Iguana Foiler will be powered by the world’s most powerful electric outboard engine, the 300hp Evoy Storm .

Having tested both the engine and the boat separately, we can’t wait to see the result when they come together with the added advantages of foiling technology. Watch this space…

The foils lift up at slow speeds to reduce the draft

Mantaray M24

Another exciting model in the hydrofoil boats pipeline, this 24ft runabout is particularly interesting is its simplicity. Unlike its main foiling rival, the Candela C-7, the Mantaray M24 requires no complicated electronics to ‘fly’.

Instead it uses the builder’s patented mechanical hydrofoil system, which it has trademarked as Dynamic Wing Technology or DWT. The technology is said to be the result of ten years’ development work and uses a retractable T-foil in the bow and H-foil amidships that self-stabilise mechanically.

This allows it to lean naturally into corners and ride serenely over waves without relying on a network of sensors and algorithms to monitor and adjust the foils. If it proves effective this could drastically reduce the cost and complexity of foiling boats, while simultaneously increasing reliability.

It doesn’t end here, with fascinating one-off projects from Spirit Yachts and BMW on the water, it’s clear that foiling has a huge potential for transforming the world of boating.

Winged ships: Soviet hydrofoils forgotten and reborn

Meteor 120R, 2021.

Meteor 120R, 2021.

The ‘Raketa’ (“Rocket”) was the first prototype of Soviet hydrofoil ships. It made its maiden voyage on August 25, 1957, and went from Gorky (now Nizhny Novgorod, 400 kilometers north-east of Moscow) to Kazan (720 kilometers east of Moscow) down the Volga River. The ‘Raketa’ covered these 420 kilometers in seven hours - reaching speeds of up to 60 km/h, which was very fast for a river ship. The ships of this type have special foils underneath and this type of design significantly reduces the water resistance. It gives the hydrofoils their main advantage - very high speed. Also, it vastly reduces bumpiness (oscillation) for passengers.

The 'Raketa' on the Moscow channel in 1967.

The 'Raketa' on the Moscow channel in 1967.

The foils can be constructed in different ways: For example, ‘Raketa’ had U-shaped shallow-submerged ones. On its first voyage, the 27-meter-long hydrofoil had 30 passengers, even though its capacity was for 64 people. And the ‘Raketa’ was a success: 300 ships were made in total and it was so popular that even the next hydrofoil models were often commonly called ‘Raketa’.

‘Meteor’, the most widespread Soviet hydrofoil, 1968.

‘Meteor’, the most widespread Soviet hydrofoil, 1968.

New Soviet hydrofoil models appeared thanks to a team of engineers headed by a ship constructor and innovator named Rostislav Alexeyev. Soon after the triumph of ‘Raketa’, they designed a hydrofoil called ‘Meteor’. It was bigger than ‘Raketa’, had a higher max speed of 77 km/h and could carry up to 123 people. The ‘Meteor’ was the most widespread Soviet hydrofoil - 400 ships were produced in total. They were exported to Germany, Egypt, Greece and other countries. Some ‘Meteors’ are still in use in Siberia, in the Far East and in St. Petersburg, where they are used for touristic cruises to Peterhof (23 kilometers south-west of St. Petersburg) and Kronshtadt (30 kilometers north-west of St. Petersburg).

Strela-1 ship.

Strela-1 ship.

Some Soviet hydrofoils were designed to operate in sea waters. One of them was the ‘Strela’ (“Arrow”). Two ships of this modification appeared in 1961 and were used in the Black Sea. ‘Strela’ had two V-shaped semi-submerged foils - a special construction for the sea. It helped these ships travel up to 70 km/h even in rough seas (with waves up to two meters high). The ‘Strela’ could carry up to 90 passengers on board.

Volga ship, 1972.

Volga ship, 1972.

The ‘Volga’ hydrofoil holiday cruiser was universal: it could be used both in shallow-sea waters and on rivers and lakes. The ‘Volga’ was created in the early 1960s. At just 8.5 meters in length, the cruiser was really small and could only carry 6 people, including the captain. It also had a removable awning instead of a roof. The ‘Volga’ had T-shaped semi-submerged foils and a max speed of 60 km/h. Later, the cruiser was remodified with V-shaped foils that helped it withstand stronger waves.

‘Burevestnik’ river ship, 1968.

‘Burevestnik’ river ship, 1968.

Rostislav Alexeyev always wanted his ships to be faster. The diesel engines limited the speed, so he decided to try to equip a hydrofoil with a gas-turbine motor taken from a plane. This type of engine is lighter and gives more power than a diesel one. One of the results of this experiment was the ‘Burevestnik’ (“Petrel”) river ship. It also had two water jets instead of a propeller. These construction changes helped the hydrofoil reach a speed of 95 km/h. The ‘Burevestnik’ was 43 meters long and could carry 150 passengers.

‘Tayfun’ hydrofoil, 1969.

‘Tayfun’ hydrofoil, 1969.

The ‘Tayfun’ (“Typhoon”) hydrofoil wasn’t just a usual passenger boat. It was created in St. Petersburg as a part of a military hydrofoil project to set up some experiments. ‘Tayfun’ was finished in 1969 and was used both in river and sea waters in the 1970s. It had innovative T-formed fully-submerged foils with autopilot controlled flaps. ‘Tayfun’ could reach speeds of up to 83 km/h and withstand rough seas. It had a maximum capacity of 98 passengers and was 31 meters long. It turned out to be efficient, but never went into mass production, because its designers didn't consider it to be a self-sufficient project: it had been initially created for experiments in the development of a military hydrofoil called ‘Uragan’ (“Hurricane”).

There were several types of military hydrofoils like coast guard motor boats and a missile-carrying ship with the code name 1240 ‘Uragan’ (“Hurricane”). The military ship was built between 1972-1976 and was in service in Crimea between 1979-1990. It had a length of 56.6 meters and a standard weight of 342 tons (while the ‘Meteor’ weighed just 36.6 tons). The foils of the ‘Uragan’ were fully-submerged and autopilot controlled. It was possible to raise the foils up, so they didn’t touch water. In this mode, the ‘Uragan’ could travel in high seas with waves up to six meters high. In calm seas, the hydrofoil ship could reach a max speed of 111 km/h. It was operated by a crew of 34 people and armed with anti-ship cruise missiles and a guided missile defence installation. Unfortunately, only one was ever made, as it turned out to be a very complicated and costly project.

Project 23160 SEC

Project 23160 SEC "Comet 120M".

After the fall of the USSR, hydrofoil construction was halted, but recently, the development of these ships has, once again, resumed. In 2013, the construction of a modern Russian hydrofoil called ‘Kometa 120M’ (“Comet 120M”) began in Rybinsk (260 kilometres north-east of Moscow). It was finished and sent for testing to Crimea in 2017. The ‘Kometa 120M’ is constructed for sea voyages, where it can travel at speeds of up to 65 km/h. The hydrofoil looks more like a spaceship and has an autopilot system for its foils. The new ship is 35.2 meters long and has a maximum capacity of 120 passengers.

Hydrofoil vessel

Hydrofoil vessel "Valdai".

Next, a hydrofoil modification called ‘Valdai 45R’ was built in 2017. It was designed for full-flowing rivers. It may become very helpful in the northern regions with a lack of roads. This new hydrofoil isn’t very big: it’s just 21.3 meters long, needs only two crew members and a maximum capacity of 45 people. It can travel at speeds of up to 65 km/h. Several ‘Valdai 45R’ ships are already in operation on the Ob, Irtysh and Volga rivers.

‘Tsiklon 250M’.

There’s also a huge sea hydrofoil called ‘Tsiklon 250M’ (“Cyclone 250M”) in the project stage. It’s a double-decker ship equipped with airliner-type seats. It has a gas-turbine motor and an unusual system of small foils. The design allows the ‘Tsiklon 250M’ to gain speeds of up to 101 km/h. The ship is 46 meters long and has a maximum capacity of 300 passengers - more than any other Russian or Soviet hydrofoil ship.

Bluegame’s luca santella on america’s cup foiling hydrogen chase cats.

The Bluegame BGHSV, Bluegame Hydrogen Support Vessel, is the answer to current America's Cup ... [+] champion Team Emirates New Zealand's request for each challenging team to build at least two 10+ meter hydrogen powered foiling chase boats capable of no less than 170 nm range at 25 knots with a top speed of 50 knots. This is the flying boat that will assist the New York Yacht Club American Magic race boat during the 37th America's Cup in Barcelona beginning in August.

From August 22nd through October 27th, all eyes in the sailing world will be focused on Barcelona for the 37th America's Cup sailing race. The oldest international sports competition still going strong, the challenge upholds many traditions. This year, however, competing teams are working with a number of changes, one of which affects design of the chase boats that assist the race boats.

The new protocol was directed by the current champion, Team Emirates New Zealand. It requires each team to build a minimum of two 10+ meter hydrogen fuel cell powered chase boats capable of sustaining a minimum speed of 25 knots for no less than a 180 nautical mile range, and hit a top speed of 50 knots.

With design by Bluegame Head of Project Strategy Luca Santella and nautical engineer Mirko Oprandi, ... [+] and hull design by Philippe Briand, the Bluegame HSV, Hydrogen Support Vessel, greets onlookers with a dramatic bow profile. The boat measures 10.80 meters in length, with a 4.20 meter beam and a weight of 5500 kilograms.

The results are stunning, particularly in the case of the New York Yacht Club's American Magic chase boat designed and built in Italy by Bluegame , the eccentric, nonconformist, trendsetting division of Sanlorenzo Yachts.

Bluegame, founded by Luca Santella in 2005, was tapped by the American Magic team for the build in August of 2022. Putting his 35 years of sailing experience to work, he embraced the challenge. Sailing all of his life and in all of the most important events in the world, he explains that the only event he has not participated in is The America's Cup. An Olympic sailor, with an older brother that shared sailing experiences with him from a very young age, this is a very special race and a very special project for him. Santella states, "These projects keep me alive," referring to the passion and curiosity surrounding innovative new builds like this.

Janet yellen issues serious $34 trillion warning as bitcoin predicted to surge to $1 million price, alexander zverev assault allegations no 4 tennis star s appeal begins after french open win over nadal.

Santella says he first became curious about these hydrogen foiling catamarans two years ago, imagining flying over the chop, the waves, smoothly and silently. He had never been on one, save for that on a foiling board.

The Bluegame BGHSV composite structures from Gurit Engineering combine with foils structure by Doug ... [+] Schickler and Davide Tagliapietra to create what Santella says is the most technically advanced boat sailing in the world today, achieving a 200 nautical mile range, reaching a top speed of 50 knots., navigating totally emission free.

Captured by the challenge of the project Santella gathered an impressive talent pool, putting himself and Mirko Oprandi on design, Philippe Briand on hull design, and Francis Hueber and Mario Caponnetto on foils design. He then engaged Gurit Engineering for the composite structures, bringing Paolo Manganelli, Harry Gillies Ripoll, and Steve Shaw on board.

To ensure each component was the best it could be, Santella also brought in Edoardo Bianchi to manage composites, Gianni and Paolo Cariboni and Pierluca Bartolotto on mechatronics, Paolo Bertelli for the power training component, and Enrico Dari for R & D, Computer Graphic Technology, and EODev, Energy Observer Developments. Santella also relied on Paolo Dassi as project manager. This highly experienced, well-respected collection of top, cutting-edge talent went to work, creating what Santella envisions will be the finest, most technically advanced chase boat at the race.

Santella tapped Francis Hueber and Mario Caponnetto for foils design, Doug Schickler and Davide ... [+] Tagliapietra on foils structure, and Fabrizio Marabini on flight control, relying on Paolo Bertetti and Enrico Dari for power training, Research and Development, Computer Graphics Technology, and EODev.

An Important Marine Business Component

While these unique craft may be just another interesting part of this epic competition, Santella feels it was a very smart marine business move to include the advanced technology for the chase boats. Foiling will absolutely become a part of mainstream marine design, Santella says, adding that it may take a little longer for the hydrogen propulsion to become popular.

"It is a very delicate and complex matter, and the network is still very, very much at the beginning," Santella states, but adds, "regarding the foils, I am really a fan of it, and looking forward to it. We are already working on a project at Bluegame. We will have a 45-foot foiling catamaran. It won't be a high tech foiling boat like we see in the chase boat, but still it will be a foiling boat."

Santella says that there is a 45-foot foiling catamaran in the works at Bluegame that has already ... [+] sparked a lot of interest. Should someone want their own version of the BGHSV chase boat, Bluegame can certainly build it. The cost will be high, but it will be an extremely high tech, nice looking asset for any superyacht looking for a clean, quiet, fast ride.

Transitioning From Race Course Concept To Day Cruiser

After the excitement of watching these chase boats at the America's Cup, there is bound to be interest generated by their quick, quiet presence. If someone comes up to Santella after the race inquiring about their own personal version of the boat, he says that it would be expensive, but Bluegame would absolutely be able to deliver. "Yes, yes, well ... you see, it's a lot of money, but it can be a very unique toy for really special guys, so why not?"

Santella says that he has already thought about the evolution of the same boat to make it suitable for use with a superyacht. It can be avant garde, high tech eye candy for even the edgiest, most well-equipped superyachts.

With regard to the need for training to assure competent captains, Santella equates driving the foiling HSV with driving a Ferrari. There might be a learning curve, he says, but with minimal instruction and a small practice session an experienced captain can easily fly the boat, especially since flying is controlled 100 percent by software.

"We do practice our captains with our normal boats. I share my knowhow with captains so they can drive safely and so that we can be proud of our boats in their hands," Santella assures. He adds that on the production version, speeds might be limited to 40 knots.

We are moving the technology, the knowhow, the experience on the chase boats into production, giving a sense to the investment in time, money and energy on this project."

Luca Santella, founder and head of product strategy at Bluegame, is looking forward to seeing the ... [+] BGHSV on the water in Barcelona, adding that it has been a fantastic experience, particularly with regard to the elevated quality the passionate team delivered throughout the design and build process.

Looking Ahead To Barcelona

Santella smiles, noting that he is most looking forward to seeing the BGHSVs shine as the best on the water, along with American Magic winning the cup. As far as the race itself, Santella acknowledges that it will be different from the previous race in New Zealand.

"We will see a different sailing compared to the one in New Zealand because New Zealand was very protected seawater, very flat, no waves. Barcelona is very different, so we can have varied conditions, waves, flat water, anything."

American Magic and her BGHSV are ready. The best engineers, the best technicians, the most precise mechanical parts, the complicated software, all have come together to create an very able craft.

Regarding his latest accomplishments on this high tech foiling hydrogen catamaran chase boat, Santella says, "Now I am really proud that my boat can be in the America's Cup."

electric hydrofoiling boat speeds along a river in Moscow

Classic look hydrofoiling electric boat debuts in Moscow

A team in Russia has developed this sleek hydrofoiling electric boat with a retro-tech classic runabout look, both inside and out.

The boat is called the Molniya – Russian for ‘lightning’ – and uses fixed surface piercing (SP) foils rather than the retractable inverted-T fully submerged (FS) type on boats like the Candela 7 .

The Molniya prototype was built by Artem Markov and a small team he assembled in Moscow. Markov is a graduate of the Moscow Automobile and Road Construction Institute, where he was part of their Formula MADI electric car racing team that competed against other universities from around the world.

Hydrofoiling electric boat idea started in 2016

Like many other electric boat developers he is also a long time sailor and says “ I have never been able to understand what is the beauty of going on motor boats with a lot of vibration and noise. So, I decided I wanted to find a way to transfer the silence and comfort of a sailing yacht to a boat. The idea came to me in 2016, and from that moment I started working on the project .”

He is a big fan of the work that the team at Candela has been doing, and is well versed in their reasonings of why hydrofoiling is the way to reduce drag and increase efficiency and comfort. So he knew foiling was the way to go and began to design his dream boat.

hydrofoiling electric boat has static foils on the hull close to the waterline

It is one thing to know exactly what one wants, but b udget realities quite often make inventors adapt. So he found a classic fibreglass-and-aluminum hull and went to work redesigning and converting it. The team had to strengthen and reinforce the hull to handle the stresses from the front foils. At the stern of the boat they designed  protruding half-wings that would help lift the boat onto those front SP foils as it accelerated.

80kW motor mounted to stern drive unit

small foiling sailboats for sale

That gives the 8.9 m • 29 ft boat a cruising speed of about 20 kts • 37 km/h and maximum speed of 36 kts • 66km/h. As for range, the Molniya can go for 135 Nautical miles at 5 kts, 17 Nm at 25 kts and 20 Nm at the top speed.

For the battery, they have taken stock lithium-ion cells and developed the modules themselves. The size is 160kW and there are some creative and useful ideas incorporated into the charging and battery management systems. One is the ability to connect a warning system to a GPS route so if you are driving at a speed that is taking yo u beyond range of getting back to shore the motor will automatically slow down. When you do get back, a full 0-100% charge takes 3.5 hours and you can check status through SMS.

hydrofoiling electric boat has dashboard with wood steering wheel and gauges similar to a 1950s car interior

One of the intriguing things about the Molniya is that all of the electric boat technology has been incorporated into a striking overall retro look. The dashboard looks like it might have been taken from a 1950s luxury car catalogue, but of course the actual meters are all digital. The interior of the entire boat harkens back to an earlier day, appearing ready to whisk 6 passengers off to a swing era supper club.

From prototype to production

Having built and tested the prototype from an existing hull, the goal of Markov and the team is to move to production mode and use the materials he always envisioned in his dream boat. While the aluminum and fibreglass of the original have been useful for testing, speed and range will benefit from materials like much lighter carbon-kevlar.

hydrofoiling electric boat seen from above

The adapted stern drive was useful for proving the hydrofoiling electric boat concept, but all of the designers and engineers are keen to see the improved efficiency they will get from a motor, drive and battery system they have designed from scratch for the Molniya. As for the foils themselves, the production model will use lighter, thinner composites instead of stainless steel.

Obviously the spring and summer of 2020 has not provided the best opportunities to introduce the prototype at boat shows and stir up interest with consumers, the trade or investors. It seems, though that the Molniya is the type of boat that should appeal to peopl looking for the same thing Artem wanted for himself: a classic motor boat experience but one that is quiet, odour free…and smooth sailing.

You can find out more on the Molniya website, lightning-foil.com .

The sunny days are back, so it’s barbecue season, baby. If you’re into smoky meats and veggies but can’t afford the footprint of a tall standing grill, we found the perfect portable one for small spaces and cooking on the go — and it’s 41% off right now . With its top handle and compact package, reviewers say the Cuisinart Venture is great for apartment balconies, boats, small vans, backyards and patios . With 9,000 BTUs and a 154-square-per-inch cooking surface, its gas power and petite size also makes it “ perfect for two .” You can get one at its lowest price of the year: $124.

The Venture grill can load 1-pound propane tanks ( sold separately ) and has an easy twist-start ignition — just turn the knob and spark it up. The wooden lid that covers its enamel grate actually doubles as a food-safe cutting board, helping make food prep at the beach or park even easier. “The grill gets extremely hot ― my sliders had amazing grill marks,” says one reviewer . “The built in cutting board is amazing as is the way it all fits together both while cooking and for storage. This is the one to get folks.”

The grill’s portability is its most killer feature and users say they’ve used it everywhere from tailgates to campsites to beaches. Some users say they’ve managed to pack away items in the compartment that fits the propane bottle. “So happy I got this grill,” raves user Teach 30 . “I knew I wanted a portable gas grill to replace my old one and this one seemed a little more bulky and more expensive but I was hoping the concept of it all going together and having a cutting board would be worth it and I was right!”

Don’t miss out on this discount — we’re not sure how long it’ll last. Fuel your next outdoor meal with this popular portable gas grill at the cheapest price it’s been all year.

Read on for more promising reviews of the Cuisinart Venture portable gas grill:

“I camp in my VW van all summer and wanted a small portable grill. I loved the look of this, how compact and portable it was, clever design, good reviews and this brand has never disappointed me. It set up in no time and fired right up. It is even cuter in person. I used it at a tailgate to warm up tortillas for tacos and it was perfect. Everyone at the tailgate commented on how cool looking it was. I wasn’t sure I would use the top as a cutting board but someone else grabbed it right away to cut limes on. Two reviews that I agree with are start with low heat because this thing gets very hot fast, and watch where you store this as it is a beautiful home for mice in the winter!” — Spidey “I originally bought this to use on our boat. I loved the idea of a compact grill that travels easy and could be used to cook meals while out on the lake. The self-contained design is so nice... The propane bottle stores inside where you can also put utensils, and the lid is a heavy-duty cutting board! The little feet underneath allow heat to dissipate. I ended up buying a second one because the first was lost when our RV was destroyed by fire. It was one of the first things we replaced. Funny story, my husband actually mistook it for a cooler at one point 😂 ” — Julie “The first time we used this grill, we took it out and started cooking everything on high heat - meat with sugary marinades, vegetables, the works. Ha ha, lots of sticking and the residue would not burn off and we spent a lot of time scraping afterwards. The second time, we actually studied the instructions, and followed them. We oiled everything we cooked and used the LOW heat setting for cooking - which by the way, is plenty hot even for thick chicken thighs. The cleanup was a lot easier. Leaves beautiful grill marks on the meat and vegies. ” — Burning down the house “Saved travel expense by replacing restaurant stops with picnic & rest area adventures. Unpacks to set a base bracket for the gas tank & cutting board surface for food prep. Perfect for two big steaks or 4 burgers + dogs. TIP: If using for more than a day trip pack a wire brush that fits the grille groves & plenty of paper towels! Cleaning was a 20-minute process every time but worth it.” — george kimball “AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!! I purchased this grill on Amazon Prime Day....and gave it to my husband as a gift for our rental home vacation trips to the beach and the rivers! He grilled chicken on it last night...and it cooked perfectly! No weird propane flavor....just delicious grilled chicken. This little grill is compact...like the size of a picnic basket and it stores the propane tank inside the plastic container holding the grill! A couple of things though....the flame at it’s lowest setting is still pretty hot, and, without having a top/lid on it...there is a tiny little bit of grease that sputters on the base...nothing major at all.....probably should use some foil on it to take care of this. And finally, the grill is way too heavy for me to carry it unless we remove the grate. So that means....my husband gets to lug the cool little grill to the sand or the river depending on where we go. Thanks again Amazon Prime and Cuisinart! My husband is very happy with his new little grill !!!!” — Sunny Stefani
