NACRA F20 – 6,20 m – Like America’s Cup cats

The Nacra yard, which specializes in open catamarans and produces the Nacra 17 Olympic class, has fitted its F 20 model with a “Flight Control System” to make it fly. The Nacra 20 FCS was designed by Pete Melvin and Gino Morelli, the authors of the 2013 America’s Cup rulebook, and its foils are reminiscent of those on the AC72 in San Francisco. Peacoq 14 – 4.70 m – Like a flying Fireball

With a hull that is vaguely reminiscent of the old Fireballs with a “cut” bow, the Peacoq 14, an evolution of the Club version, is a dinghy that can be a compromise for both novice and experienced foil sailors. In fact, the dinghies can be operated in automatic trim, or more experienced sailors can adjust their angle for maximum performance. Price: quote on request.

Persico 69F – 6,9 m – The trendy boat

This concept boat is the brainchild of the Italian racing elite (Giorgio Benussi, Dede de Luca, “l’oriundo” Maciel Cicchetti) and was designed by Argentineans Wilson and Marquinez. Flying the 69F is not too difficult, although it does require a good physique and strength in the arms, especially for the mainsail trimmer and the foil adjuster. Skeeta – 3,35 m – Easy for anyone

Ease first. The idea behind Skeeta is the same as that of many other small foilers: to make this type of wing easy and open to everyone. Skeeta is a single glider that flies on two self-regulating appendages, not particularly technical to fly but still very high performance, with the particular shape of the hull that distinguishes all Quant models. Stunt S9 – 4,16 m – The Italian Foiling cat

This is an all-Italian One Design catamaran that can be sailed as a single with just a mainsail or even a jib depending on the weather conditions. Like other catamarans, to improve stability in flight, it moves on four submerged appendages. Physically it requires a certain amount of athleticism, also because there is a trapeze, but with a little training it can be suitable for a wide audience. Price: 16,600 euros.

Ufo – 3,00 m – Flying with two hulls

This small catamaran is equipped with a sensor that self-adjusts the inclination of the single central foil, coupled to the T of the rudder. It can take off even in light winds thanks to the lightness of its construction. The cat is quite easy to sail, suitable even for sailors who do not have much experience with foils.

Waszp – 3,35 m – For the whole family

Very similar to the Moth, but with one big difference: the Waszp is a monotype, it is not made of carbon and the appendages being monotyped cannot be changed. For this reason it is less expensive than the Moth, even if it does perform somewhat less well. It is considered by many to be an ideal “family” boat because it is fun for both young and old. The foil adjustment system is managed by a sensor, but it is possible to set the appendages and modify some adjustments. Price: 12,200 euros.

Whisper – 5,40 m – Full performance

As light as the highest performing Cats, it features a one-piece, non-removable platform that provides great structural rigidity. Equipped with the four classic self-adjusting appendages, it is able to set sail in light breezes with a certain ease. BACKGROUNDS

As foiling progresses, more and more fans and sailors want to experience the sensation of flying, even if only once.

But the reality is that many of them are in doubt as to whether they will be able to fly continuously and controlled, since flying these machines does not seem as easy as sitting down.

In many cases, it requires significant physical preparation and endurance to be able to keep the balance in flight based on counter-heeling, making counter balance and playing with the mainsail sheet hunting and molding to maintain balance and not repeatedly go overboard.

Option: Fiberfoam Carbon mast, 7.5m, iFLY specific design, based on a-class design : 2.400 €

• by choosing this option, the iFLY serial mast (black anodized aluminum) is replaced by a high-tech Fiberfoam carbon mast. The carbon mast reduces weight by 4.7kg and increases sailing performance. However, the carbon mast is not recommended for double trapezing

TF10 Foiling Trimaran

After the foiling revolution, the TF10 foiling trimaran is now the evolution of foiling sailing. With the TF10 foiling trimaran, sailing and foiling can be reached by any sailor. The TF10 is an 11 m long one-design foiling trimaran, designed by the famous yacht designers Morrelli & Melvin . The TF10 is built and sold by DNA Performance Sailing.

The TF10 is suitable for a crew of 4-5 persons and can handle a wide range of sailing conditions. The construction consists of pre-preg carbon fibers with a Nomex honeycomb core. This provides a lightweight, yet safe and robust construction. The foiling TF10 trimaran is the perfect foiling boat for both pleasure trips and sailing fast in races.

The transport of the TF10 is also revolutionary: when folded, it is easy to transport. We supply the TF10 with a specially designed road trailer, launching by boat ramp or crane are both possible.

Foils create sailing comfort

Thanks to the sophisticated design, every sailor feels comfortable on the TF10 foiling trimaran. Regardless of age, gender or muscle strength. • The bow is designed to cut through the waves. This results in less hits on waves, which greatly increases sailing comfort.

• The wishbone boom (half windsurfer boom) provides the decksweeper mainsail layout to perform at its best. An additional advantage is that in a manoeuvre the sail is now the lowest point and not the carbon boom.
• A ‘Semi-ridged’ carbon fibre trampoline cloth has been specially designed to make the boat’s construction torsional stiff. It makes it easier to walk on and block’s splashing water from the foils.
• The TF10’s foils and T-rudders minimize pitch and roll movements. The rake angle of all four foils is adjusted with electric actuators. This system improves comfort and safety during sailing and foiling.

TF10 hydrofoils

The TF10 foiling trimaran flies with a 4-point foil setup:

• The T-rudders with horizontal elevators generate lift and/or downforce.
• The so called Z-type daggerboard foils provide the necessary lift to be able to foil.
• The advantage of the 4-point-foil setup is that the crew does not have to pick up the daggerboards during manoeuvres. This significantly reduces the crew’s actions.
• In addition, we have electric actuators that change the position of the foils and rudders with a single push on the button.
• The design of the Z-foils has already been very successfully applied to other foiling multihulls, such as the A-cats and the Olympic Nacra 17.

See and feel the future of sailing. The TF10 foiling trimaran is here!

This special foiling trimaran was designed at the end of 2015. The idea was to make a foiling multihull that anybody can sail and foil with. A foiling boat equipped with the same technology as the boats at the America’s Cup.

The TF10 and its sailing class is the result of initiatives by a group of five sailing friends on the East Coast of America (Newport, RI). They have joined forces and created the TF10 sailing class.

The members of the TF10 Class Association have lot’s of experience in various one-design racing series. The goal is to create a racing series that is as exciting, honest and fun as the boat itself.

Morrelli & Melvin designed a trimaran to combine the specific characteristics of a trimaran with foiling. The trimaran’s center hull offers important advantages here: its buoyancy and pitch stability eliminate the risk of ‘nose diving’ or ‘pitch poling’. In the design briefing, wind range and sea state (short sea shipping) were important. The design of the TF10 is based on this.

About the 69F

Persico 69F is a mono-hull foiling sailboat designed by the Argentinian firm Wilson-Marquinez to offer to the widest possible sailing public a small foiler, using a concept borrowed from the AC75, the new boat for the 36th America’s Cup. The prototype has already sailed for numerous days on Lake Garda, where it has been tested by top-ranked sailors, among whom the Olympics multiple medal-winner Santiago Lange, a living legend in the sport of sailing. Santi Lange has also taken on the initiative of starting an academy to popularize sailing on foils and train teams to participate in the new Persico 69F regattas circuit. Persico Marine’s competence in the yacht racing field is renowned at the world level. For the innovative 69F, the firm has availed itself of its specific know-how acquired from the series production of VO65s, the larger advanced high-performance One Design boats currently sailing. Moreover, on the subject of state-of-the-art one-design crafts, Persico Marine is the Official Supplier of the famous foil arms for the next America’s Cup, to be held in Auckland in 2021. These parts, which are used to keep the AC75s up on their foils, have been supplied to all teams and are absolutely identical in all respects.

The Persico 69F has been created as a strict one-design boat where the true test when racing is between crews and not boats and equipment. The fundamental objective of these rules is to ensure that this concept is maintained.

As indicated by its name, the Persico 69F is 6.90 metres in length. The canoe body is made of extremely light carbon fibre and shows a form stability that allows the new craft to fill the current gap between the highest performing displacement boats and a true foiling boat. Designed for a crew of 3, the 69F is fitted with a couple of racks with seats to facilitate handling and for a safer sailing, a V-shaped foil, a T-shaped rudder, a daggerboard system and 40 square metres of sail area (45 sqm code 0) which already at 7 knots can lift the boat’s weight of only 380 kg. If there is a mixed-gender crew, it would be possible to sail with 4 people.

Foiling technology has really taken off in the past few years. We pick out 6 of the best hydrofoil boats you can buy right now…

With its roots in the 19th century, foiling technology is as old as the hills, but in the past five years we’ve noticed an explosion of hydrofoil boats coming onto the market.

In part inspired by the foiling raceboats of the America’s Cup , the popularity of foiling is easy to understand – fuel efficiency gains are substantial, noise is almost eliminated (particularly if your foiling boat also happens to be an electric boat ) and they look as cool as a snowman in a freezer!

To help you understand the dizzying array of foiling boats available right now, we’ve put together the following guide to what we think are the most promising designs out there.

SEAir foiling RIB

Founded in 2016, French yard SEAir builds foiling RIBs, having been inspired by the speed of foiling racing yachts.

We tested their 5.5m model back in 2018 and since then they have expanded their range to cover superyacht chase boats, commercial and military vessels.

Our tester recorded a top speed of 32 knots, with the foils doing their best work at around 20 knots, but SEAir claims that 42 knots is possible in the right conditions.

Enata Foiler

Dubai-based Enata Marine added a healthy dose of glamour to the world of foiling boats in 2018 with the launch of its Foiler.

In addition to a superyacht tender-worthy exterior, this 32fter includes a bow window for spectacular views while underway.

A 40-knot top speed and a 190nm range makes this a very appealing option, although the premium price tag of $938,000 may put some off.

Princess R35

When British boatbuilding giant Princess Yachts got in on the foiling boat game in 2019 with a 35ft carbon-fibre dayboat, we knew that things had really taken off.

While the foil-assisted R35 may not have the spectacular cruising-above-the-waves appeal of some other foiling boats, it is highly efficient, beautifully designed (in collaboration with Pininfarina) and handles like nothing else we’ve ever driven.

The foiling Candela C-8 is the first boat to use Candela’s proprietary C-POD, but bigger craft will follow later

Candela C-8

Swedish firm Candela burst onto the scene in 2021 with its debut, the Candela C-7 , which was billed as the world’s first electric foiling boat, but it was the 2022 launch of the Candela C-8 that really moved the game on.

Available with a 69kWh battery, adapted from the Polestar 2 electric car, owners can expect a range of 57nm at 22 knots, more than enough for dayboat use.

The consumption figures are truly staggering, with Candela’s figures suggesting that the C-8 is more than 12x more efficient than an equivalent 300hp outboard powered sportsboat.

Iguana Foiler

Not content with being at the forefront of the amphibious boats market with its caterpillar-track offering, French yard Iguana has set its sights on the world of foiling too.

Announced last year, the Iguana Foiler will be powered by the world’s most powerful electric outboard engine, the 300hp Evoy Storm .

The foils lift up at slow speeds to reduce the draft

Mantaray M24

Another exciting model in the hydrofoil boats pipeline, this 24ft runabout is particularly interesting is its simplicity. Unlike its main foiling rival, the Candela C-7, the Mantaray M24 requires no complicated electronics to ‘fly’.

Instead it uses the builder’s patented mechanical hydrofoil system, which it has trademarked as Dynamic Wing Technology or DWT. The technology is said to be the result of ten years’ development work and uses a retractable T-foil in the bow and H-foil amidships that self-stabilise mechanically.

This allows it to lean naturally into corners and ride serenely over waves without relying on a network of sensors and algorithms to monitor and adjust the foils. If it proves effective this could drastically reduce the cost and complexity of foiling boats, while simultaneously increasing reliability.

Winged ships: Soviet hydrofoils forgotten and reborn

Meteor 120R, 2021.

The ‘Raketa’ (“Rocket”) was the first prototype of Soviet hydrofoil ships. It made its maiden voyage on August 25, 1957, and went from Gorky (now Nizhny Novgorod, 400 kilometers north-east of Moscow) to Kazan (720 kilometers east of Moscow) down the Volga River. The ‘Raketa’ covered these 420 kilometers in seven hours - reaching speeds of up to 60 km/h, which was very fast for a river ship. The ships of this type have special foils underneath and this type of design significantly reduces the water resistance. It gives the hydrofoils their main advantage - very high speed. Also, it vastly reduces bumpiness (oscillation) for passengers.

The foils can be constructed in different ways: For example, ‘Raketa’ had U-shaped shallow-submerged ones. On its first voyage, the 27-meter-long hydrofoil had 30 passengers, even though its capacity was for 64 people. And the ‘Raketa’ was a success: 300 ships were made in total and it was so popular that even the next hydrofoil models were often commonly called ‘Raketa’.

New Soviet hydrofoil models appeared thanks to a team of engineers headed by a ship constructor and innovator named Rostislav Alexeyev. Soon after the triumph of ‘Raketa’, they designed a hydrofoil called ‘Meteor’. It was bigger than ‘Raketa’, had a higher max speed of 77 km/h and could carry up to 123 people. The ‘Meteor’ was the most widespread Soviet hydrofoil - 400 ships were produced in total. They were exported to Germany, Egypt, Greece and other countries. Some ‘Meteors’ are still in use in Siberia, in the Far East and in St. Petersburg, where they are used for touristic cruises to Peterhof (23 kilometers south-west of St. Petersburg) and Kronshtadt (30 kilometers north-west of St. Petersburg).

Some Soviet hydrofoils were designed to operate in sea waters. One of them was the ‘Strela’ (“Arrow”). Two ships of this modification appeared in 1961 and were used in the Black Sea. ‘Strela’ had two V-shaped semi-submerged foils - a special construction for the sea. It helped these ships travel up to 70 km/h even in rough seas (with waves up to two meters high). The ‘Strela’ could carry up to 90 passengers on board.

The ‘Volga’ hydrofoil holiday cruiser was universal: it could be used both in shallow-sea waters and on rivers and lakes. The ‘Volga’ was created in the early 1960s. At just 8.5 meters in length, the cruiser was really small and could only carry 6 people, including the captain. It also had a removable awning instead of a roof. The ‘Volga’ had T-shaped semi-submerged foils and a max speed of 60 km/h. Later, the cruiser was remodified with V-shaped foils that helped it withstand stronger waves.

‘Burevestnik’ river ship, 1968.

Rostislav Alexeyev always wanted his ships to be faster. The diesel engines limited the speed, so he decided to try to equip a hydrofoil with a gas-turbine motor taken from a plane. This type of engine is lighter and gives more power than a diesel one. One of the results of this experiment was the ‘Burevestnik’ (“Petrel”) river ship. It also had two water jets instead of a propeller. These construction changes helped the hydrofoil reach a speed of 95 km/h. The ‘Burevestnik’ was 43 meters long and could carry 150 passengers.

‘Tayfun’ hydrofoil, 1969.

The ‘Tayfun’ (“Typhoon”) hydrofoil wasn’t just a usual passenger boat. It was created in St. Petersburg as a part of a military hydrofoil project to set up some experiments. ‘Tayfun’ was finished in 1969 and was used both in river and sea waters in the 1970s. It had innovative T-formed fully-submerged foils with autopilot controlled flaps. ‘Tayfun’ could reach speeds of up to 83 km/h and withstand rough seas. It had a maximum capacity of 98 passengers and was 31 meters long. It turned out to be efficient, but never went into mass production, because its designers didn't consider it to be a self-sufficient project: it had been initially created for experiments in the development of a military hydrofoil called ‘Uragan’ (“Hurricane”). 

There were several types of military hydrofoils like coast guard motor boats and a missile-carrying ship with the code name 1240 ‘Uragan’ (“Hurricane”). The military ship was built between 1972-1976 and was in service in Crimea between 1979-1990. It had a length of 56.6 meters and a standard weight of 342 tons (while the ‘Meteor’ weighed just 36.6 tons). The foils of the ‘Uragan’ were fully-submerged and autopilot controlled. It was possible to raise the foils up, so they didn’t touch water. In this mode, the ‘Uragan’ could travel in high seas with waves up to six meters high. In calm seas, the hydrofoil ship could reach a max speed of 111 km/h. It was operated by a crew of 34 people and armed with anti-ship cruise missiles and a guided missile defence installation. Unfortunately, only one was ever made, as it turned out to be a very complicated and costly project.

Project 23160 SEC "Comet 120M".

After the fall of the USSR, hydrofoil construction was halted, but recently, the development of these ships has, once again, resumed. In 2013, the construction of a modern Russian hydrofoil called ‘Kometa 120M’ (“Comet 120M”) began in Rybinsk (260 kilometres north-east of Moscow). It was finished and sent for testing to Crimea in 2017. The ‘Kometa 120M’ is constructed for sea voyages, where it can travel at speeds of up to 65 km/h. The hydrofoil looks more like a spaceship and has an autopilot system for its foils. The new ship is 35.2 meters long and has a maximum capacity of 120 passengers.

Next, a hydrofoil modification called ‘Valdai 45R’ was built in 2017. It was designed for full-flowing rivers. It may become very helpful in the northern regions with a lack of roads. This new hydrofoil isn’t very big: it’s just 21.3 meters long, needs only two crew members and a maximum capacity of 45 people. It can travel at speeds of up to 65 km/h. Several ‘Valdai 45R’ ships are already in operation on the Ob, Irtysh and Volga rivers.

‘Tsiklon 250M’.

There’s also a huge sea hydrofoil called ‘Tsiklon 250M’ (“Cyclone 250M”) in the project stage. It’s a double-decker ship equipped with airliner-type seats. It has a gas-turbine motor and an unusual system of small foils. The design allows the ‘Tsiklon 250M’ to gain speeds of up to 101 km/h. The ship is 46 meters long and has a maximum capacity of 300 passengers - more than any other Russian or Soviet hydrofoil ship.

Bluegame’s luca santella on america’s cup foiling hydrogen chase cats.

The Bluegame BGHSV, Bluegame Hydrogen Support Vessel, is the answer to current America's Cup ... [+] champion Team Emirates New Zealand's request for each challenging team to build at least two 10+ meter hydrogen powered foiling chase boats capable of no less than 170 nm range at 25 knots with a top speed of 50 knots. This is the flying boat that will assist the New York Yacht Club American Magic race boat during the 37th America's Cup in Barcelona beginning in August.

From August 22nd through October 27th, all eyes in the sailing world will be focused on Barcelona for the 37th America's Cup sailing race. The oldest international sports competition still going strong, the challenge upholds many traditions. This year, however, competing teams are working with a number of changes, one of which affects design of the chase boats that assist the race boats.

The new protocol was directed by the current champion, Team Emirates New Zealand. It requires each team to build a minimum of two 10+ meter hydrogen fuel cell powered chase boats capable of sustaining a minimum speed of 25 knots for no less than a 180 nautical mile range, and hit a top speed of 50 knots.

[+] and hull design by Philippe Briand, the Bluegame HSV, Hydrogen Support Vessel, greets onlookers with a dramatic bow profile. The boat measures 10.80 meters in length, with a 4.20 meter beam and a weight of 5500 kilograms.

The results are stunning, particularly in the case of the New York Yacht Club's American Magic chase boat designed and built in Italy by Bluegame , the eccentric, nonconformist, trendsetting division of Sanlorenzo Yachts.

Bluegame, founded by Luca Santella in 2005, was tapped by the American Magic team for the build in August of 2022. Putting his 35 years of sailing experience to work, he embraced the challenge. Sailing all of his life and in all of the most important events in the world, he explains that the only event he has not participated in is The America's Cup. An Olympic sailor, with an older brother that shared sailing experiences with him from a very young age, this is a very special race and a very special project for him. Santella states, "These projects keep me alive," referring to the passion and curiosity surrounding innovative new builds like this.

Santella says he first became curious about these hydrogen foiling catamarans two years ago, imagining flying over the chop, the waves, smoothly and silently. He had never been on one, save for that on a foiling board.

[+] Schickler and Davide Tagliapietra to create what Santella says is the most technically advanced boat sailing in the world today, achieving a 200 nautical mile range, reaching a top speed of 50 knots., navigating totally emission free.

Captured by the challenge of the project Santella gathered an impressive talent pool, putting himself and Mirko Oprandi on design, Philippe Briand on hull design, and Francis Hueber and Mario Caponnetto on foils design. He then engaged Gurit Engineering for the composite structures, bringing Paolo Manganelli, Harry Gillies Ripoll, and Steve Shaw on board.

To ensure each component was the best it could be, Santella also brought in Edoardo Bianchi to manage composites, Gianni and Paolo Cariboni and Pierluca Bartolotto on mechatronics, Paolo Bertelli for the power training component, and Enrico Dari for R & D, Computer Graphic Technology, and EODev, Energy Observer Developments. Santella also relied on Paolo Dassi as project manager. This highly experienced, well-respected collection of top, cutting-edge talent went to work, creating what Santella envisions will be the finest, most technically advanced chase boat at the race.

Santella tapped Francis Hueber and Mario Caponnetto for foils design, Doug Schickler and Davide ... [+] Tagliapietra on foils structure, and Fabrizio Marabini on flight control, relying on Paolo Bertetti and Enrico Dari for power training, Research and Development, Computer Graphics Technology, and EODev.

An Important Marine Business Component

While these unique craft may be just another interesting part of this epic competition, Santella feels it was a very smart marine business move to include the advanced technology for the chase boats. Foiling will absolutely become a part of mainstream marine design, Santella says, adding that it may take a little longer for the hydrogen propulsion to become popular.

"It is a very delicate and complex matter, and the network is still very, very much at the beginning," Santella states, but adds, "regarding the foils, I am really a fan of it, and looking forward to it. We are already working on a project at Bluegame. We will have a 45-foot foiling catamaran. It won't be a high tech foiling boat like we see in the chase boat, but still it will be a foiling boat."

Santella says that there is a 45-foot foiling catamaran in the works at Bluegame that has already ... [+] sparked a lot of interest. Should someone want their own version of the BGHSV chase boat, Bluegame can certainly build it. The cost will be high, but it will be an extremely high tech, nice looking asset for any superyacht looking for a clean, quiet, fast ride.

Transitioning From Race Course Concept To Day Cruiser

After the excitement of watching these chase boats at the America's Cup, there is bound to be interest generated by their quick, quiet presence. If someone comes up to Santella after the race inquiring about their own personal version of the boat, he says that it would be expensive, but Bluegame would absolutely be able to deliver. "Yes, yes, well ... you see, it's a lot of money, but it can be a very unique toy for really special guys, so why not?"

Santella says that he has already thought about the evolution of the same boat to make it suitable for use with a superyacht. It can be avant garde, high tech eye candy for even the edgiest, most well-equipped superyachts.

With regard to the need for training to assure competent captains, Santella equates driving the foiling HSV with driving a Ferrari. There might be a learning curve, he says, but with minimal instruction and a small practice session an experienced captain can easily fly the boat, especially since flying is controlled 100 percent by software.

"We do practice our captains with our normal boats. I share my knowhow with captains so they can drive safely and so that we can be proud of our boats in their hands," Santella assures. He adds that on the production version, speeds might be limited to 40 knots.

We are moving the technology, the knowhow, the experience on the chase boats into production, giving a sense to the investment in time, money and energy on this project."

Looking Ahead To Barcelona

Santella smiles, noting that he is most looking forward to seeing the BGHSVs shine as the best on the water, along with American Magic winning the cup. As far as the race itself, Santella acknowledges that it will be different from the previous race in New Zealand.

"We will see a different sailing compared to the one in New Zealand because New Zealand was very protected seawater, very flat, no waves. Barcelona is very different, so we can have varied conditions, waves, flat water, anything."

American Magic and her BGHSV are ready. The best engineers, the best technicians, the most precise mechanical parts, the complicated software, all have come together to create an very able craft.

Regarding his latest accomplishments on this high tech foiling hydrogen catamaran chase boat, Santella says, "Now I am really proud that my boat can be in the America's Cup."

Classic look hydrofoiling electric boat debuts in Moscow

A team in Russia has developed this sleek hydrofoiling electric boat with a retro-tech classic runabout look, both inside and out.

The boat is called the Molniya – Russian for ‘lightning’ – and uses fixed surface piercing (SP) foils rather than the retractable inverted-T fully submerged (FS) type on boats like the Candela 7 .

The Molniya prototype was built by Artem Markov and a small team he assembled in Moscow. Markov is a graduate of the Moscow Automobile and Road Construction Institute, where he was part of their Formula MADI electric car racing team that competed against other universities from around the world.

Hydrofoiling electric boat idea started in 2016

Like many other electric boat developers he is also a long time sailor and says “ I have never been able to understand what is the beauty of going on motor boats with a lot of vibration and noise. So, I decided I wanted to find a way to transfer the silence and comfort of a sailing yacht to a boat. The idea came to me in 2016, and from that moment I started working on the project .”

He is a big fan of the work that the team at Candela has been doing, and is well versed in their reasonings of why hydrofoiling is the way to reduce drag and increase efficiency and comfort. So he knew foiling was the way to go and began to design his dream boat.

It is one thing to know exactly what one wants, but b udget realities quite often make inventors adapt. So he found a classic fibreglass-and-aluminum hull and went to work redesigning and converting it. The team had to strengthen and reinforce the hull to handle the stresses from the front foils. At the stern of the boat they designed  protruding half-wings that would help lift the boat onto those front SP foils as it accelerated.

That gives the 8.9 m • 29 ft boat a cruising speed of about 20 kts • 37 km/h and maximum speed of 36 kts • 66km/h. As for range, the Molniya can go for 135 Nautical miles at 5 kts, 17 Nm at 25 kts and 20 Nm at the top speed. 

For the battery, they have taken stock lithium-ion cells and developed the modules themselves. The size is 160kW and there are some creative and useful ideas incorporated into the charging and battery management systems. One is the ability to connect a warning system to a GPS route so if you are driving at a speed that is taking yo u beyond range of getting back to shore the motor will automatically slow down. When you do get back, a full 0-100% charge takes 3.5 hours and you can check status through SMS.

One of the intriguing things about the Molniya is that all of the electric boat technology has been incorporated into a striking overall retro look. The dashboard looks like it might have been taken from a 1950s luxury car catalogue, but of course the actual meters are all digital. The interior of the entire boat harkens back to an earlier day, appearing ready to whisk 6 passengers off to a swing era supper club.

From prototype to production

Having built and tested the prototype from an existing hull, the goal of Markov and the team is to move to production mode and use the materials he always envisioned in his dream boat. While the aluminum and fibreglass of the original have been useful for testing, speed and range will benefit from materials like much lighter carbon-kevlar.

The adapted stern drive was useful for proving the hydrofoiling electric boat concept, but all of the designers and engineers are keen to see the improved efficiency they will get from a motor, drive and battery system they have designed from scratch for the Molniya. As for the foils themselves, the production model will use lighter, thinner composites instead of stainless steel.

Obviously the spring and summer of 2020 has not provided the best opportunities to introduce the prototype at boat shows and stir up interest with consumers, the trade or investors. It seems, though that the Molniya is the type of boat that should appeal to peopl looking for the same thing Artem wanted for himself: a classic motor boat experience but one that is quiet, odour free…and smooth sailing.
