Azimut Atlantis 50 foot yacht interior design

A yacht is really just a luxury floating home . When you’re talking 70 feet and larger, they’re a lot nicer than my house. As you’ll see in the luxury yacht interiors below, the quality and aesthetics are simply gorgeous. And we merely feature a small handful of such boats. There are thousands and thousands of these worldwide.

Our epic yacht interiors article is split into 5 galleries:  staterooms, guest bedrooms , salons and dinettes, kitchens and bathrooms. The point of this article is to merely give you a glimpse inside these ultra expensive boats… expensive to buy, run and maintain. Be sure to also check out our yacht decks galleries .

Yacht Primary Bedrooms (Staterooms)

We kick off our yacht interiors gallery with the stateroom. When it comes to the primary bedroom on these boats, no expense is spared. They are large, comfortable and stunning in design. These bedrooms are bigger than our primary bedroom.

Yacht Guest Bedrooms (2 Beds)

Many guest bedrooms on a yacht have two beds so that it can accommodate more people. However, they are, as you’ll see below, still very, very luxurious. These are certainly cozy sleeping quarters.

Salon and Dinette Photos

My favorite room on the boat is the salon and/or dinette area. In many cases, the dinette doubles as the living room. Mega yachts have dedicated salons and dining areas. I love these superb lounge designs below in the cabin as well as the upper lounge areas.

I must admit that kitchens on these super yachts are fairly small. I guess the cooking is done by the staff and yacht owners prefer to have more space for bedrooms, deck space and lounge space. That makes sense given there really is limited space. Nevertheless, these kitchens are gorgeous and the yacht designers certainly didn’t skimp with respect to quality.

Most boats dedicate very little space to bathrooms. Not these. The primary bathrooms below are incredible. The smaller bathrooms are guest bathrooms. These luxury yachts are so large and spacious that even the bathrooms are both beautiful and comfortable to use.

Superyacht Interiors: The Top Luxury Designs

Luxury Brands

Everyone knows that a yacht or superyacht is nothing without a luxury interior. Indeed, there’s now a whole range of interior designers who either specialize in or regularly create yacht interiors. So, how do you find the best projects? Here at Insplosion, we want to help. That’s why we’ve gathered a list of our top luxury superyacht interiors !

Yacht fans may also like: Sabrina Monte-Carlo: Famous Interior Designers of Monaco

Brigadoon | studio indigo.

Including the Brigadoon in this list is pretty mandatory. After all, this luxury yacht by Studio Indigo is an actual winner of the World Superyacht Awards 2019! Thus, this project is all about the grand but understated mid-century luxury decor. The flowers, the wood, and navy-colored details combine to make this into a pretty classic luxury boat interior. Indeed, it’s the beautiful and neutral harmony that truly takes this project to the next level.

Besides, it’s quite a practical design. As you can see, the bedrooms and closets are amazingly organized. It’s all about luxury, yes, but also about comfort and practicality. The high seas are no place for clutter, which can cause accidents in bad weather.

But, in contrast with the brown color palette, you have this lovely deck area. With its slightly japandi style influences, this is the perfect place to relax in at the end of a long day.

Aurora Borealis | Winch Design

The Aurora Borealis does justice to its namesake. Indeed, it is as white and bright of an interior as the aurora itself. However, there are all sorts of little decor elements which are reminiscent of the sea. Just notice the shell-shaped ashtray and sea-horse patterns on some of the pillows! Finally, the mid-century lighting really adds a nice touch to the ambiance.

But there’s much more to admire. How do you like the lovely art deco bar? The lines themselves almost remind you of corals and shells. And the airy, light decor is just as present in the dining and living areas. While just as luxurious, this interior is much different from the Brigadoon’s.

Finally, we’ll leave you with this gorgeous view of the yacht’s deck at night. Once again, the seatings and patterns are chosen to be evocative of the ocean. It’s as gorgeous of a yacht design as you could ask for.

Superyacht Forever | St. Corona Interiors

If you’re looking for something equally light, but much more sober, look no further than Superyacht Forever . This creation by St. Corona Interiors also follows a white color scheme, but the decor elements aren’t quite as feminine. There’s not as much art deco influence here. The lines are much cleaner and simpler, almost minimalist compared to the glamour of the previous project.

Office Ideas

Johnston Marklee – An award-winning architecture firm

The bar and living room area follow more or less the same route. Indeed, they favor light color schemes and clean, shapely lines. It’s all about practical luxury, functional without being quite minimalist.

Finally, we have the bedroom. While not opulent in the slightest, this room has the same sort of stylish beauty as the rest of the interior. Once again: you don’t want clutter on the high seas!

Logica | Martin Kemp Design

At last, we reach the Logica .  This project for a luxury yacht by Marin Kemp Design is everything our interior decor dreams are made of. Like the Aurora, it takes a much more art deco approach to superyacht interiors. The little metal details are just what we like to call luxury hardware!

The bedroom and living space designs follow very similar color schemes and strategies. Since you can’t have any clutter, it’s all about denoting luxury through the tiniest details.

Finally, you have the bathroom project, which is as light and gorgeous as the rest of the design. It’s a luxury bathroom through and through.

So, which of these superyacht interiors did you prefer?

Living on a Yacht: Weighing the Pros and Cons of a Luxury Lifestyle

Explore the dream – and the realities – of Living on a Yacht, offering insights into the freedom and challenges it entails. From financial considerations and space optimization to the impacts of weather and community aspects, it provides a balanced view to help readers make an informed decision about this unique lifestyle.

Imagine the gentle sway of waves, the endless horizon of the sea, and the allure of waking up to a different view every morning. This isn’t a holiday brochure; it’s the possibility of your new life on a yacht. It’s a dream for many, but what does it truly entail? In this exploration, we delve into the reality of yacht living. It’s not all sunsets and sea breezes. Like any home, a yacht has its charms and challenges.

For those in their prime years, considering a shift from a traditional home to a yacht is more than just a change of address. It’s a lifestyle overhaul. We’re not just talking about a snug living space or the need to be a Jack-of-all-trades at sea. It’s about embracing a unique blend of freedom and responsibility.

Living the Yacht Lifestyle

Our journey through this blog post is not just about painting a rosy picture. It’s about providing a realistic lens through which you can view this significant life decision. We’ll explore how this choice fits into your life puzzle, whether you’re an adventurous soul seeking the thrill of the open seas or a contemplative mind looking for serenity away from the land’s hustle.

As you read through, remember, every big decision comes with its highs and lows–like the tides. Yacht living is no exception. So, let’s set sail on this exploratory voyage to uncover what lies beneath the surface of living on a yacht.

The Allure of Yacht Living

The concept of yacht living taps into a deep-seated desire for freedom, an intimate connection with nature, and a sense of belonging within a unique community. Living on a boat isn’t just about the physical space you inhabit; it’s about the lifestyle and experiences that come with it. From the flexibility to cruise to new locations on a whim to the close-knit marina communities, yacht life offers a distinct way of living that is both challenging and rewarding. The

The Freedom and Flexibility of Location of Luxury Yacht Living

One of the most enticing aspects of living aboard a yacht is the sheer freedom it offers. Imagine having the ability to change your scenery whenever you wish. Whether it’s anchoring in a secluded bay or docking at a vibrant marina, your home is as mobile as you desire. This flexibility allows for a life unbound by the traditional constraints of geographical location.

Sailing from one destination to another, you’re not just moving your home; you’re embracing a lifestyle that allows for spontaneous adventures and experiences. The freedom to explore coastal towns, hidden coves, and open seas is unparalleled. This nomadic way of life provides a sense of liberation and adventure that is hard to find in traditional living arrangements.

Proximity to Nature and Unique Living Experiences

Living on a yacht brings you closer to nature in a way that few other lifestyles can. The rhythm of the waves, the panoramic ocean views, and the ability to witness marine life up close become a part of your daily life. This connection to the natural world is not just visually stunning but also offers a sense of peace and tranquility.

View of the Open Seas from a Yacht

The unique living experiences that come with yacht life are endless. From waking up to the gentle lapping of waves against the hull to enjoying sunsets over the water every evening, these experiences enrich life aboard. Each day presents an opportunity to create unforgettable memories, whether it’s swimming in crystal-clear waters, fishing for your dinner, or simply enjoying the serenity of the sea.

Overview of the Sense of Community in Marinas and Sailing Circles

One might think that living on a boat could be isolating, but the reality is quite the opposite. Yacht marinas and sailing communities are often vibrant and welcoming. When you dock or anchor your yacht, you’re not just stopping at a place; you’re becoming part of a community. These communities are characterized by shared experiences, mutual assistance, and a common passion for the sea.

Life in a marina is rich with social interactions. Fellow liveaboards and sailors form a tight-knit community, often gathering for shared meals, group excursions, or simply exchanging stories and advice. This camaraderie is a significant part of the allure of yacht living. The sense of belonging is palpable, as everyone shares a common understanding of the joys and challenges of life at sea.

The community extends beyond the physical confines of the marina. Sailing circles worldwide are connected by a shared love for cruising and exploration. Whether it’s through organized regattas, informal meet-ups, or online forums, these connections foster a sense of global community. Sailors often form lasting friendships, bound by their shared experiences and adventures at sea.

Superyachts in luxury yacht marina

Marinas often host events and activities that further strengthen these bonds. From educational workshops to social gatherings, there is a sense of collective growth and enjoyment. Living at a marina or being part of a sailing community isn’t just about having a place to dock your boat; it’s about being part of a supportive and engaging network that enriches your life aboard.

If you’re considering taking this step into yacht life, you may want to consider a test run. Charter a private yacht and try this lifestyle out for yourself. You may even decide you prefer renting over buying. Rent one model today, and then — when your mood or plans change — change the yacht for rent.  You don’t have to commit right away, this isn’t a marriage, it’s a yacht.

Space and Design: Adapting to Yacht Interiors

Transitioning to live on a boat full-time introduces a unique set of challenges and opportunities, particularly when it comes to space and design. Yacht interiors, whether in a luxury yacht or a modest sailboat, require thoughtful planning and clever solutions to make the most of the available space. This section delves into the art of maximizing space, the crucial role of organization, and the myriad ways you can personalize your floating home.

Maximizing Limited Space: Innovative Design Solutions

The key to successful boat life lies in efficiently utilizing the limited space. Every square inch on a boat counts, and making the most of this space is vital for comfortable living. Design solutions often involve multi-functional furniture, such as beds with storage underneath, foldable tables, or convertible seating areas. These innovations allow for a practical living environment without sacrificing comfort or style.

Luxury Yacht Interior

Another aspect is the strategic use of vertical space. Wall-mounted shelves, hanging organizers, and overhead storage can free up valuable floor space. In a sailboat, for example, the interior can be designed with built-in storage in unexpected places like under the stairs or in the hull. This approach ensures that every part of the boat is utilized effectively.

The type of boat also plays a role in how space can be maximized. For instance, catamarans typically offer more living space compared to monohulls, making them a popular choice for those looking to move aboard full-time. Regardless of the boat type, the goal is to create a space that is both functional and comfortable.

The Importance of Efficient Organization When Yachting

Living on a boat full-time demands a high level of organization. The limited space means there’s little room for clutter, making it essential to keep everything in its place. Efficient organization not only makes life on board more comfortable but also ensures safety when the boat is in motion.

Organizational strategies include using containers and baskets to keep items secure, labeling storage areas for easy access, and regularly decluttering to avoid accumulating unnecessary items. This discipline in organization extends to all aspects of boat life, from the kitchen and living areas to personal belongings and maintenance tools.

Boat insurance policies often require certain safety standards to be maintained,

and a well-organized boat is more likely to meet these requirements. Keeping equipment properly stored and accessible can be critical in emergencies. Additionally, an organized interior can help in reducing the overall cost of living on a boat, as it prevents damage and loss of items, which could be costly to replace.

Customization Options for Personalizing Your Space

Turning a yacht into a home involves more than just functional adjustments; it’s about infusing your personality into the space. Customization allows boat dwellers to create an environment that reflects their style and preferences, adding to the enjoyment of luxury yacht living.

Personalizing a yacht interior can range from choosing color schemes and fabrics to selecting artwork and – perhaps – some nautical-themed decorative items . Many boat owners opt for a full tour of customization, tailoring each aspect of the yacht to their liking. This could include custom-built furniture, unique lighting fixtures, or bespoke floorings, such as teak or bamboo.

For those living on a sailboat, customization might mean optimizing the layout for sailing efficiency while also creating a cozy, livable space. This could involve installing custom cabinetry that fits the boat’s contours or adding personal touches like cushions and throws that make the space feel like home.

Yacht Interior

Customization also extends to technological upgrades. Modern yachts can be equipped with advanced navigation systems, entertainment setups, and climate control, enhancing the overall experience of boat life. These modifications not only add comfort but also can increase the boat’s value.

In essence, adapting to yacht interiors is a blend of practicality, organization, and personalization. Whether you’re planning to move aboard a sailboat or a luxury yacht, these elements work in harmony to create a living space that is not just functional but truly feels like home.

Climate Considerations When You Live on a Boat Full-Time

The climatic conditions of the chosen residence place or travel route are not the most obvious factor which must be noted. Being in a city apartment or a private house, we don’t think much about the weather outside the window. If a strong wind blows outside, heavy rain falls or the temperature suddenly drops, we will feel almost nothing.

On a yacht, the weather does not just play an important role, your safety and comfort directly depend on it. Each boat is individual and suitable for certain climatic conditions. It is worth analyzing all the characteristics of the boat in advance and honestly evaluating its capabilities in order to accurately determine whether it is possible to  live on a yacht all year round in your chosen water area.

Financial Considerations: The Cost of Yacht Life

Embarking on the journey of yacht life involves more than just adapting to a new way of living; it also requires a clear understanding of the financial implications. While it’s easy to romanticize the idea of sailing around the world or living full-time on a boat, the reality comes with its own set of financial responsibilities. From the initial purchase of the boat to ongoing expenses and the comparison to traditional homeownership, understanding these costs is crucial for anyone considering this lifestyle.

Initial Investment: Purchasing and Outfitting a Yacht

The first step in yacht life is acquiring the right boat. This involves not only finding the best boat that suits your needs but also managing the financial investment it requires. The cost of a new boat can vary widely, depending on factors such as size, brand, and features, some of which we covered above. Choosing to live on a larger boat or a luxury cruiser naturally involves a higher initial investment.

In addition to the purchase price, outfitting a yacht for full-time living is a significant consideration. This may include upgrading boat systems, adding navigation equipment, and customizing the interior to make it livable. Even if you opt for an old, more affordable boat, it could require substantial investment in renovations and upgrades.

Furthermore, acquiring the necessary knowledge and skills for yacht maintenance and sailing is part of the initial investment. This might entail sailing courses, safety training, and learning about the nautical aspects of yacht care.

Ongoing Expenses: Maintenance, Docking Fees, Insurance

Once you own a yacht, the financial commitments continue. Boat maintenance is an ongoing requirement and a crucial part of life aboard. The yacht owners will need knowledge and skills to keep the yacht in good condition. Regular upkeep ensures the safety and longevity of your boat. This includes everything from engine maintenance to hull cleaning and can vary greatly in cost, depending on the age and condition of your boat.

El Gouna Yacht Maintenance

Docking fees are another significant expense, especially if you choose to stay at marinas. The cost can vary based on location and the services offered. Additionally, a dinghy might be necessary for transportation to and from the shore, adding to the expenses.

Insurance is an essential consideration for any boater. Boat insurance policies can be complex and vary greatly in coverage and cost. It’s crucial to have a comprehensive policy that covers potential damages and liabilities, especially when living on a boat full-time.

Comparing the Cost of Living to Traditional Homeownership

When contemplating yacht life, it’s common to wonder if you’ll save money compared to traditional homeownership. The answer depends on various factors, including the type and size of the boat, the chosen lifestyle, and where you plan to dock or anchor.

Annual costs for yacht living can include maintenance, insurance, docking fees, and fuel, which can be comparable to or even exceed the costs of owning a home. However, some expenses, like property taxes and certain utilities, may be lower or non-existent.

A gas station on the quay for yachts

It’s also important to consider the value of the experience and lifestyle when comparing costs. Yacht life offers a unique set of experiences and freedoms that traditional homeownership cannot provide. While the financial aspect is crucial, the decision to live on a yacht often goes beyond mere economics.

Living on a boat full-time can also mean a shift in priorities and lifestyle choices. For some, this means downsizing and simplifying life, which can lead to reduced overall living expenses. However, for others, particularly those choosing a luxury yacht or a larger boat, the costs can be comparable to or even exceed those of a high-end terrestrial home.

Challenges and Downsides of Full-Time Living on a Boat

Living on a yacht presents a unique set of challenges and downsides that are important to consider before making the leap into this lifestyle. While the idea of living on a boat may evoke images of endless sunsets and tranquil waters, the reality can be quite different. Factors such as weather dependency, limited access to facilities, and the psychological impacts of isolation and confined spaces play a significant role in day-to-day life on a yacht.

Weather Dependency and Its Impact

One of the most significant challenges of living on a yacht is the constant need to be mindful of the weather. Your entire life becomes closely tied to weather conditions, which can change rapidly and without warning.

  • Safety Concerns : Severe weather can pose serious safety risks. Being caught in a storm while at sea can be dangerous, and even when docked, high winds and waves can cause damage to your yacht.
  • Lifestyle Adjustments : Daily activities and travel plans often have to be adjusted according to the weather. This can mean being stuck in a location longer than planned or missing out on certain experiences.
  • Constant Vigilance : Living on a yacht requires a high level of awareness and knowledge of weather patterns. This can be mentally taxing, as one always needs to be prepared for the possibility of changing plans or taking emergency precautions.

Yacht on Calm Waters at Night

Remember the old saying, “Red sky at night, sailors delight. Red sky in the morning, sailors take warning!”

Limited Access to Certain Facilities and Services When You Live on a Yacht

Another downside of yacht life is the limited access to facilities and services that are often taken for granted on land.

  • Healthcare and Emergency Services : In remote areas, access to healthcare and emergency services can be limited or delayed. This can be a concern for those with medical conditions or in case of accidents.
  • Utility Services : Services like high-speed internet, electricity, and plumbing work differently on a yacht and may not always be reliable. This can affect both work and daily living.
  • Convenience and Shopping : Getting groceries or finding specific supplies can be challenging, especially when anchored away from urban centers. This requires careful planning and often means you can’t have everything you want when you want it.

Dealing with Isolation and Confined Spaces When Living Aboard a Boat

The psychological aspects of living on a yacht are often overlooked, yet they are crucial for a sustainable life at sea.

  • Isolation from Society : While some seek solitude, prolonged periods of isolation can affect mental health. Being away from family, friends, and the wider community can lead to feelings of loneliness.
  • Small Living Quarters : The confined space of a boat can be challenging, especially for those used to larger living spaces. It requires adjustments in both physical belongings and mental preparedness for close-quarters living.
  • Cabin Fever : Spending extended periods on a boat, especially during bad weather when you can’t leave, can lead to a sense of restlessness or cabin fever. This is where the small space and isolation can compound to impact mental well-being.

While living on a yacht can be an incredibly rewarding experience, it’s important to acknowledge and prepare for the challenges and downsides. Understanding the realities of weather dependency, limited access to amenities, and the psychological effects of isolation and confined spaces is crucial for anyone considering making a boat their home. These factors are integral to life at sea and require careful consideration and planning to ensure a fulfilling and sustainable lifestyle on the water.

Yacht Interior Design Trends: Crafting Luxurious Living Spaces on the Water

yacht living room

When we think about yachts, we often picture the exterior beauty and the freedom of sailing across the open water. But, what’s on the inside counts just as much. Yacht interior design has come a long way, mixing comfort and luxury to make your time at sea as enjoyable as possible. Let’s dive into the latest trends that are making yacht interiors better than ever.

Comfort and Luxury: Bringing the Best of Both Worlds

Gone are the days when yacht interiors were all about function, with stiff chairs and cramped spaces. Nowadays, it’s all about bringing the comfort of your living room into the yacht. Designers are picking top-notch materials, soothing colors, and furniture that you’d love to sink into after a day of adventure.

  • Quality Materials : Think rich woods, soft fabrics, and touches of luxury everywhere you look.
  • Lighting and Colors : The right lighting and a calm color scheme can make even the smallest spaces feel welcoming and larger.
  • Furniture That Fits : Customized furniture isn’t just about standing up to water; it’s stylish and comfortable, making your yacht feel like a floating home.

Tech-Savvy Spaces

With all the advancements in technology, it’s no surprise that yachts are getting smarter. Everything, from the lights to the air conditioning, can now be controlled with just a touch. This tech isn’t just for show; it’s about making life on the water smooth and hassle-free.

  • Control at Your Fingertips : Who wouldn’t want to adjust everything without moving an inch?
  • Clever Use of Space : Smart designs and furniture that serve more than one purpose help make the most out of every space on the yacht.
  • Going Green : More and more, yachts are using solar energy and eco-friendly gadgets. It’s all about enjoying the luxury while taking care of the oceans.

  • Design It Your Way : Whether you’re into modern minimalism or classic elegance, your yacht can showcase your personal style.
  • Art and Personality : From art pieces to unique decorations, these touches make your yacht truly yours.
  • Tailored Layouts : Work with designers to ensure your yacht has the perfect setup for your lifestyle, whether you’re hosting parties or seeking solitude.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Yacht Interior Design

The world of yacht design is always moving forward, with sustainability and seamless indoor-outdoor living being the next big things. Future yachts will not only look and feel luxurious but will also be kinder to the planet.

  • Eco-friendly is the New Luxury : Expect to see more natural materials and energy-saving tech onboard.

Yacht Interior Design Trends: Luxury Living on Board

Michael Castorino Articles

Luxury yachts are highly customized, high-end vessels designed for the ultimate in comfort, style, and functionality. If you have the opportunity to customize every aspect of your vessel’s interior and exterior,  you’d want your yacht to look like an expression and extension of you.

Fortunately, the world of luxury yachts is continually evolving, with designers and builders pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in terms of design, technology, and comfort. Yacht interior design trends often mirror broader interior design trends. Still, they also have their own unique characteristics and considerations due to the limited space and specific needs of yacht living.

Timeless Interior Design Trends for Luxury Yachts

If you just got yourself a new vessel or are planning to revamp the interior of your old one, here are some interior design trends to keep in mind:

  • Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Living: The seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces is a telltale sign of luxury yachts. Foldable or retractable glass doors, outdoor lounges, and dining areas create a fluid connection to the sea and surrounding nature.
  • Open and Airy Layouts: To create a sense of space and connection to the surrounding ocean, open and airy layouts with large windows and open-plan designs are largely favored in luxury yachts. These layouts maximize natural light and panoramic views, allowing you to make the best of your cruise.
  • Timeless Elegance: Classic, timeless design elements such as rich woods, marble surfaces, and luxurious fabrics continue to be popular choices for luxury yacht interiors. These materials exude opulence and never go out of style.
  • Customization: Personalization is key in luxury yacht interior design. Yacht owners often work closely with interior designers to create bespoke furnishings, fixtures, and decorative elements that reflect their unique tastes and preferences.
  • Innovative Technology: State-of-the-art technology is a must in luxury yacht interiors. Smart lighting, audiovisual systems, climate control, and security features can be seamlessly integrated into the design for convenience and luxury.
  • Artistic Expression: Yacht owners often use their vessels as a canvas for artistic expression. This can include commissioned artwork, sculptures, and unique decor pieces that reflect the owner’s personality. Including an art piece or a custom-made painting is a good way to make your interior stand out.
  • Innovative Lighting: LED lighting continues to be a popular choice for its energy efficiency and versatility. Lighting design can create different moods and atmospheres throughout the yacht. This is a good option at your disposal when you want the interior to match your moment, whether it’s a party or if you just want to relax.
  • Spa-Like Bathrooms: Bathrooms on luxury yachts are designed to resemble spa retreats. Features like Jacuzzi tubs, steam showers, and high-end fixtures offer a sense of indulgence. If you’d like to treat yourself to a soothing bath when you are relaxing on a distant shore, this is a good way to go.
  • Wellness Spaces: Wellness is a growing trend in luxury yacht design. Some yachts feature onboard gyms, and spa areas with massage rooms, saunas, and even yoga studios to promote relaxation and well-being .
  • Nautical Themes: Some luxury yacht owners opt for nautical-themed interiors, incorporating elements like porthole windows, rope accents, and marine-inspired color palettes for a classic maritime ambiance.

Monaco Yacht Show: 7 Yacht Interiors That Will Steal the Show

By Nicole Trilivas

Room on yacht with intricate blue stone flooring and walls

Running from September 28 through October 1, the Monaco Yacht Show is the highlight of the global boat show circuit. This year’s edition promises to deliver plenty of buzzy debuts, headline-making yacht news, and high-design highlights. There are several new additions to this year’s event in Port Hercules including a sustainability hub and a gadget- and gizmo-filled adventure area , packed with new water toys and flashy supercars —it is Monaco , after all.

For denizens of design, the Yacht Design & Innovation Hub is returning for a second year, with presentations, galleries, and exhibits by yacht architects and designers. But, of course, the big boats steal the show. With yacht interiors that range from the classically nautical to the budget-blowing bonkers, these are the superyachts to have on your radar at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show.

Sitting area inside a yacht

An oversized chandelier defines the space in the informal dining room aboard Ahpo .

Lürssen, Ahpo

All eyes will be on the whopping 377-feet Ahpo , by Lürssen, when it debuts this year at the Monaco Yacht Show as the largest yacht in the port. Venice-based exterior and interior designer Nuvolari Lenard added plenty of personality and luxury to the vessel with oversized crystal light features, a hammam made of mosaics in the massive wellness area, and a grand staircase at the center of the yacht, crafted to resemble an olive tree.

Interiors of main deck lounge on a yacht

Blue accents channel the traditional nautical aesthetic.

Feadship, Rock.It

The 198-foot Rock.It is not short on style: Gleaming wood panels with creamy white leather inlays feature throughout; glowing white onyx contrasts with rich black Portoro marble; and the well-dressed owner’s cabin rivals the top suite of an old-world European hotel with a warm wood study and bathroom with a claw-footed tub. The refined design can be attributed to the Netherlands with Dutch shipyard Feadship behind the build and Dutch design studio Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design taking on the interiors.

Bar and seating area on a yacht

Modern and laid-back, Come Together is effortlessly cool.

Amels, Come Together

Built in the Netherlands by Amels with interiors by London-based Winch Design, the 197-foot Come Together has soft and laid-back beach-y vibes with a dose of Southern California cool. Elements like bleached oaks, woven linen fabrics, cabinetry with natural coconut shell, and hair-on-hide leathers all unite to bring the natural world aboard this chic ship.

Stairs leading down to a seating area on a yacht

Crisp and clean, the interiors of Be Cool are to-the-point in a refreshing way.

Swan 98, Be Cool

There’s a fleet of around a dozen large sailing yachts on display at this year’s yacht show in the dedicated Sailing Yacht Area. One of the most notable new launches of the bunch is Swan 98 Be Cool  by Finnish shipyard Nautor’s Swan. The clean and crisp interior hull design by Genovese architect Misa Poggi embraces graceful nautical style and Scandinavian practicality with navy linen and cotton fabrics, dark oak, and handsome tobacco-hued leather.

Kokomo ’s interiors will speak to the minimalist.

Sunreef, Kokomo

Packed with cutting-edge green tech and ultralight solar panels, Sunreef’s newest catamaran  Eco 80 will be making waves at this year’s show. However, it’s the interiors of the 80-foot Kokomo (done in-house by Sunreef) that will impress the design lovers. Outfitted in cool and calm shades of white with rattan finishes and eucalyptus veneers, Kokomo is both on-trend and a complete classic.

Seating room with glassbottomed pool above it.

The glass-bottom pool is a highlight of the yacht.

Abeking & Rasmussen, B2

One of the largest vessels currently on the market, the 281-foot B2 by German yard Abeking & Rasmussen, will be showing off an ultra-chic over-$4-million interior refit just completed in July at this year’s show. Sprawling out over five decks, Winch Design has curated a serene floating sanctuary of indoor-outdoor living, the highlight of which is the main deck’s glass-bottom pool, stationed above the light-filled beach club lounge with fold-down balconies that extend the living space right to the water’s edge.

Seating area on a yacht

With dark wood, tubular steel accents, and black furnishings, the interiors of State of Grace could be described as a nautical take on the Bauhaus aesthetic.

Perini Navi, State of Grace

State of Grace by Italy’s Perini Navi is a gorgeous high-performance sailing sloop. It’s picture-perfect with polished teak decks, an ocean-blue hull, and billowing white sails. Inside is a study in midcentury-modern elegance with a split-level saloon and a spacious and full-beam owner’s suite with a hammam shower.

Step inside M.Y Brigadoon , a 36 metre long yacht designed by Studio Indigo and Nauta Yachts .

It's the first semi-custom 36m yacht from the Martinique line by Dutch builder Moonen, and the stunning design even won it the prestigious World Superyacht Awards, 2019. The yacht was designed to please rather than to impress.

The owner wanted a boat with a steel hull for stability and comfort, and long-range cruising capacity for ‘go anywhere’ experiences.

In terms of exterior design, he wasn’t interested in trying to keep up with the latest fashions or a brash and boastful look. He wanted a classic, timeless and elegant yacht that would be stylish yet practical with a sense of identity and character. The interiors were to have an understated luxury that’s not too precious and can be enjoyed by all.

Also on the wish list were plenty of shaded exterior areas, five cabins and a tender garage so that the decks would remain clean and uncluttered. A well-equipped galley on the main deck was a must, and the owner also wanted several spacious dining areas.

While the boat was 80% built, the shipyard (Moonen) still allowed for a degree of personalisation. The bimini on the sun deck was replaced by a hard top, the Jacuzzi was removed and the dining table was enlarged so it could seat 16. The sun deck became a large convivial family space for lunch, drinks, parties and barbecuing.

The upper deck lounge – dubbed the 'winter garden' – connects directly to the large outdoor dining space. Sliding glass doors give this space stunning 270° views, creating an open and light space that is perfect for either formal or informal dining and spending quality time with loved ones. Furniture is by David Linley, with an external carpet from Tim Page. Potted plants and custom art pieces add to the cosy, home-from-home feel, a breath of fresh air from the overly opulent interiors on traditional superyachts.

The boat's general architecture and interior design were initially created by Nauta Design and offered the team at Studio Indigo a fantastic starting point to continue the look with carefully selected loose fixtures and fittings.

Studio Indigo wanted the interior to be comfortable and practical while also having some personality. And while they were keen to create a sense of the style and luxury usually associated with superyachts, they avoided anything that felt contrived or unnecessarily precious.

In the main living area, Studio Indigo selected furniture from Holly Hunt and Giorgetti in neutral fabrics to show off the Le Manach fabrics from Pierre Frey. The colours in the cushions were then picked up in the bespoke silk rug woven specifically for the boat by Tufenkian.

Tones of turquoise, aqua and ochre were used to give the space a warm and soothing ambience. Beautiful lamps created by Charles Paris in gunmetal and polished and brushed stainless steel are sculptural objects in their own right. Studio Indigo also designed the dining table in mirror-polished stainless steel, featuring woven metal trapped in between layers of glass.

Aside from the communal outdoor areas and lounges, there's also a particularly spacious, lavishly finished galley – a nod to the owner’s passion for cooking.

There are four guest cabins on the lower deck, but the master bedroom sits on the main deck (the boat can sleep up to ten guests).

With spectacular panoramic views, the master suite features a woven leather tartan headboard, flanked by Charles Paris lamps with distinctive horizontal shades that pick up on the banded theme of the Rubelli fabric covering the walls.

The en-suite guest cabins on the lower deck comprise two VIP cabins and two twin cabins, the latter of which have extra Pullman berths which make the bedrooms roomier.

Each of the guest cabins on the lower deck were given their own colour scheme based on the horsehair fabric that was used to clad the walls – very practical, yet tactile and with a subtle shimmer that beautifully reflects light.

Walls are complemented by woven leather from Lance in a 21st Century tartan, made especially for each cabin. To add a sense of luxury, Roman blinds were made with fabric from Hermès, Dedar and Tissus d’Hélène, while bedside lamps were sourced from Charles Paris, maintaining design continuity.

Externally, each deck was colour coded using a range of fabrics by Evitavonni, resulting in each area having its own character and identity. Outdoor furniture from Summit was finished in a rich dark lacquer to complement the boat’s black accents within the superstructure.

yacht living room

The boat's wide-body superstructure makes her feel like a much larger yacht, owed to the exterior design by Rene Van Der Velden, and the naval architecture by Diana Yachts.

Together with a warm and comforting interior design that is flooded with natural light, the boat feels homely and like a home-from-home at sea.

WHAT IS THE TYPICAL USE FOR ARKUP LIVABLE YACHTS? Owners can use the livable yacht as a recreational vessel that can provide the feel and comfort of home. For investors, the vessels represent an unparalleled opportunity as seasonal or event rentals (in compliance with local regulations depending on the jurisdiction).

LIVING ON THE WATER: WHAT ARE THE WORLD TRENDS OF THIS NEW LIFESTYLE? Although Arkup’s livable yachts are vessels, they can be used as floating houses, which have become popular as housing in some parts of the world (for example, in the Netherlands, the American West Coast, and in Southeast Asia). Arkup livable yachts are “future-proof” dwellings, whose mobility and flexibility make them resilient to floods, storm surge, and sea-level rise. Used as overwater villas, they also offer a key solution to urban growth and space scarcity.

WHAT IS THE RESALE VALUE OF A LIVABLE YACHT OVER TIME? A simple, practical concept — modular, adaptable, and built to last — the Arkup livable yacht will hold its value over time.  Compared with those of a traditional yacht, the vessel’s operational expenses are limited, and its features are designed to withstand extreme weather events and changes in water level, making it the ideal home of the future.

WHAT IS THE PRICE RANGE OF AN ARKUP LIVABLE YACHT? The price of the 75-foot Arkup livable yacht starts at $3.5 M, up to $5.5 M. The vessel can be customized to the needs and taste of each client.

IS THE INTERIOR DESIGN CUSTOMIZABLE? The Arkup livable yacht can be delivered in a stripped-down version — decorator ready — or fully furnished and ready to move in. Bespoke projects can be developed to suit each client’s needs and tastes.

HOW MUCH TIME BETWEEN ORDER AND DELIVERY OF THE LIVABLE YACHT? Standard delivery time is 14 to 18 months after order confirmation and plans approval, depending on desired technology and customization.

WHERE CAN THE VESSELS BE DELIVERED? Manufactured in Miami, Arkup livable yachts are delivered via waterways to coastal areas, accessible interior lakes, and large rivers around the world (cost of delivery provided on request).

WHAT IS THE USUAL MAINTENANCE CHECKLIST? Maintenance is limited: changing filters, lubricating the hydraulic pilings, cleaning the hull, pumping out the wastewater tank, inspecting and testing safety-features inspections, washing the solar roof.

CAN ARKUP LIVABLE YACHTS BE USED AS SEASONAL RENTALS?

Arkup livable yachts can be chartered to carry as many as 12 passengers with or without a crew, operating as an Uninspected Passenger Vessel over 100 gross tons or as a Recreational Vessel — a bareboat charter — according to the U.S. Coast Guards’ safety standards and regulations.

IS THERE ANY TAX INCENTIVE FOR BUYING AN ARKUP LIVABLE YACHT? The maximum taxes levied on the sale of a vessel in the State of Florida are $18,000, including both sales and use tax and discretionary sales surtax. Although there is no direct tax incentive for purchasing a 100-percent solar-electric vessel, you will have no utility bills because the Arkup Livable Yacht generates its own power and water, and it can operate off-the-grid. The property tax does not apply to recreational vessels. The annual registration fee for an Arkup Livable Yacht is approximately $150.

WHERE CAN I LIVE WITH SUCH A VESSEL? The same kind of areas where large yachts dock: marina slips, private docks, waterfront properties, privately-owned submerged lands, or regulated anchorage.

IS IT A HOUSE OR A VESSEL IN VIEW OF LAWS AND REGULATIONS? It is a recreational vessel that must be registered and titled.

WHAT ARE THE ENVIRONMENTAL REGULATIONS FOR OPERATING AN ARKUP LIVABLE YACHT? Laws prohibit anchoring in protected areas in an effort to preserve the waters and sea bottoms. Black- and gray-water discharge must be conducted in compliance with the regulations of individual local jurisdictions.

HOW IS SAFETY ADDRESSED IN OPERATIONS? Safe operating procedures (navigation, boat lift, sliding terrace, and hydraulic pilings) are detailed in the operational manual and will be addressed during owner training.

WHAT ARE ONBOARD SAFETY DEVICES? Glass railings and handrails, life vests, smoke detectors, sprinklers and fire extinguishers, alarms (smoke, bilge water, intrusion) and automated bilge pumps, lightning protection, CCTV cameras, and VHF are included. All alarms are connected and monitored in real-time.

WHAT TYPE OF WARRANTY DOES ARKUP OFFER? ARKUP offers 3 years on hull and superstructure, 2 years on power, jack-up, and propulsion systems, and 1 year on all items manufactured by Arkup. Accessories and components made by third parties installed by Arkup are covered by direct warranties of their own with a 12-month minimum coverage (i.e. electronic instruments, controls, accessories, air conditioning systems, appliances, windows, etc.)

WHAT ARE THE OPERATIONAL LIMITS OF THE VESSEL? The vessel is designed and engineered according to U.S. Coast Guard standards for recreational vessels in partially protected waters. The maximum anchoring depth is 25 feet (7.5 meters). The vessel is also compliant with the MCA LY3 Short Range Yacht stability criterion (waves < 1.83m/6 ft ; wind < 16kts).

WHAT DOES “HURRICANE-PROOF” MEAN? The Arkup livable yacht structure and anchoring system are designed to resist high winds of as much as 156 miles per hour, or 250 kilometers per hour — equivalent to a Category 4 hurricane. The vessel can be completely lifted out of the water to safeguard from storm surge. Hurricanes are predictable storm events, allowing enough time for owners to sail to a safe harbor or a protected area. The livable yachts are not made to stay in deep waters and exposed areas.

ARE ARKUP LIVABLE YACHTS CUSTOMIZABLE? The vessels are fully customizable on-demand and can incorporate anything the customer would like to include.

IS THERE A THERMIC ENGINE BACKUP FOR THE 100-PERCENT ELECTRIC MODEL? A diesel generator can be added upon request to increase range, but existing electric engines provide enough power to propel the vessel and navigate safely.

CAN YOU BOOST THE POWER OF THE ELECTRIC THRUSTERS? Yes. The two 136-horsepower thrusters can be upgraded. We can also boost electric-energy production and storage depending on the client’s needs.

WHAT HOME-AUTOMATION TECHNOLOGIES ARE INCORPORATED INTO THE ARKUP LIVABLE YACHTS? An Arkup livable yacht features state-of-the-art smart technologies and offers maximum living comfort by enabling the control of temperature, lights, electric shades, sound system, video surveillance, etc., remotely and monitored in real-time, providing the user with information on battery life and water-tank capacity, as well as overall energy generation-consumption ratios.

HOW DOES ARKUP LIVABLE YACHT FLOAT AND NAVIGATE? Flotation is ensured by Archimedes. Our livable yacht is equipped with two 136-horsepower (100-kilowatt) electric thrusters that rotate 180 degrees, allowing smooth navigation and maneuverability.

WHAT ABOUT COMMUNICATIONS AND ACCESS TO NETWORKS? Arkup livable yachts are equipped with long-range, high-speed internet and VHF. Satellite television and navigation systems are optional.

WHAT ARE THE MAIN ADVANTAGES OF THE ELECTRIC THRUSTERS? Cruising is silent and does not pollute the water; electric propulsion does not generate noise, smoke, or fumes and reduces vibrations disturbing marine life.

WHAT ARE THE MAIN SPECIFICATIONS OF THE VESSEL? 300 tons weight, 75×32 feet, 5-foot draft, 34-foot air draft, average speed 3knots with a max of 5-knot. The 8-millimeter steel hull is composed of 28 watertight compartments.

WHAT ARE THE SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS AND TECHNOLOGIES INCLUDED ONBOARD? Arkup livable yachts offer Low-e consumption design and materials as well as equipment for solar-energy generation and battery storage. Also included, are the systems for rainwater harvesting, water purification and storage, wastewater management, energy recovery, and ventilation.

WHAT IS THE MAXIMUM POWER GENERATION AND STORAGE CAPACITY? 36 kW of power generation from the solar roof and as much as one megawatt-hour of power storage ensure more than enough energy to operate the boat engines and livable features. The vessel can cruise 4 to 10h / 8 up to 20 NM, depending on the sun and time in the day.

ARE THE BUILDING MATERIALS ECO-SOURCED? Conception and design are eco-friendly. Sustainable and green materials are incorporated into the design as much as possible.

IS THE VESSEL 100-PERCENT SELF-SUSTAINING? Yes, it is. The vessel is zero-emission, carbon-neutral, energy-positive and collects rainwater, and treats it for onboard use.

WHY OFFER SUSTAINABLE OFF-GRID LIVABLE YACHTS? We strive to offer an alternative lifestyle to preserve the environment by avoiding fossil fuels. Our vessels and housing solutions are resistant to storm surges and hurricanes.

WHAT ARE THE HYDRAULIC PILINGS USED FOR? The automated hydraulic system ensures that the vessel is anchored and leveled in waters as deep as 20 feet (6 meters) and also enable lifting the vessel entirely out of the water for comfort and safety.

WHAT ABOUT MOTION SICKNESS ONBOARD? The stability provided by the hydraulic anchoring system is designed to avoid the movement that can cause motion sickness: This makes the Arkup overwater villas as comfortable as a house on the land.

CAN I GO FROM MIAMI TO KEY WEST, TAMPA, OR EVEN NEW YORK? Yes you can, depending on weather, which determines the daily range capacity (up to 8 hours / 20 NM).

ARE THERE ANY SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS TO OPERATE THE FULLY-ELECTRIC POWERED VESSEL? It requires the same boating experience as any other similar-sized recreational vessel. Thorough training and an extensive manual are provided to all customers. The owner can also hire our certified captains.

HOW MANY GUESTS AND CREW CAN STAY ON THE BOAT WHEN CRUISING OR AT ANCHOR? The Arkup livable yacht can accommodate six to eight people comfortably overnight. The livable yacht can operate as a recreational vessel with a limit of55 passengers (life vests required) or as charter vessels carrying as many as 12 passengers, according to the U.S. Coast Guard’s safety standards and regulations.

CAN I USE AN ARKUP LIVABLE YACHT AS A MOBILE BEACH HOUSE IN THE BAHAMAS OR SOMEWHERE ELSE? Yes, owners of foreign-registered boats (including the U.S.) may keep their vessels in the Bahamas (for instance) for one year without paying duty and may extend the one-year stay for two years by paying a fee of $500. The initial entry fee is $300 to clear Bahamas Customs and Immigration and to obtain a cruising permit. After two years, the vessel would have to depart the Bahamas for one month before applying for a new cruising permit.

HOW TO RECEIVE MAILS, PARCELS OR DELIVERIES? Marinas can provide concierge services or a mailbox or rent a slot at a local Post Office.

DOES THE VESSEL NEED A CAPTAIN TO OPERATE? With adequate boating experience, operating an Arkup Livable Yacht is relatively easy with the training provided by Arkup. A license and safety certification may be required locally.

WHAT KIND OF LICENSE AND INSURANCE ARE NEEDED? Arkup livable yachts are registered and insured as pleasure boats. To operate them, most U.S. states require a driver’s license and boating safety certification for recreational use. For other countries, Arkup can assist you.

CAN WATER SLIDES AND OTHER TOYS BE ADDED? Arkup livable yachts provide plenty of storage space for toys and recreational items. Make the ocean your playground!

HOW IS DISPOSAL OF SEWAGE AND WASTEWATER MANAGED ONBOARD ARKUP LIVABLE YACHTS? Vessel operators are required to retain their sewage discharges on-board for disposal at sea (beyond three miles from shore) or onshore at a pump-out facility. Black and gray waters are stored in a 3,700-gallon (14-cubic-meter) holding tank before being pumped out at either a marina or by a vessel designed to pump out waste. There are other options, such as using an approved U.S. Coast Guard Marine Sanitation Device (MSD) and then discharging within 3 miles offshore according to Clean Water Act regulations.

HOW LONG CAN THE LIVABLE YACHT REMAIN OFF-THE-GRID (WITHOUT POWER AND WATER)? Arkup livable yachts can remain off-the-grid all year long depending on the weather (sun exposure/rainfall) in tropical regions. Without any sun to charge the batteries, a full charge can provide electricity for all household needs for two to three days (without navigation).

The 4,000-gallon fresh-water tank ensures two weeks of self-sufficiency for six people without harvesting any rainwater. If needed, the vessel can connect to shore power to refill the freshwater tank (or add an optional water-maker).

IF I CHOOSE TO LIVE OFF-THE-GRID ON AN ARKUP LIVABLE YACHT, HOW DO I GET TO SHORE? There are many easy options. You can use a tender boat to get to shore via authorized public or private docks, or by renting a slip in a marina where you can dock while you’re on land. There are also many types of amphibious vehicles now available, making it possible to access land through a public boat ramp. Local companies offer water taxi services. Arkup also partners with ILandMiami (www.ilandmiami.com) to provide access by seaplane or helicopter.

WHAT IS THE APPROXIMATE OPERATING COST OF AN ARKUP LIVABLE YACHT?

The cost is much less than a yacht of equivalent size (the annual operating costs of a yacht are typically 10 percent of its value). Compared with a traditional house, the maintenance is roughly equivalent — there is no garden or swimming pool to maintain, but the livable yacht must be cleaned regularly. If the livable yacht is docked in a marina, the slip rental costs will generally be considerably lower than the property taxes on similar waterfront property. The hull can be easily inspected, washed, and maintained when the livable yacht is lifted above the waterline.

HOW ARE TRASH AND GARBAGE HANDLED ONBOARD?

Arkup livable yachts have a dedicated trash room equipped with a trash compactor and recycling bins. The compacted trash is disposed of ashore at public garbage facilities or marinas (a composter for organic waste is optional).

What Really Happens at a Sex Party? 8 Women Share Their True Stories

By Varuna Srinivasan

a collage of a silhouetted woman in a sexual position indicating a sex party

Welcome to Doing It , a column where sex educator Varuna Srinivasan explores the deep connections between sex and emotions. This month, we examine the art of the sex party — and what these infamous fêtes really entail.

Sex parties are exactly just that. They are parties, like any social gathering, except the people attending can (oftentimes) have sex. At some point in our lives, most of us have attempted to make out — or even get downright dirty — in the bathroom of a public venue, be it a nightclub, bar, or even an old-fashioned house party. (Plus, let’s be honest, many such locations are not safe places for women or queer folks .) Dancing and flirting are great, but if you’re looking to do more, know this: There are countless curated spaces that don’t just permit but encourage such mingling.

However, sex parties are not a monolith; they differ immensely from place to place, so I want you to forget what you’ve seen in the movies. While all such parties encourage sexual activity to some degree, it’s essential to have a clear understanding of what the party will entail — and to ensure that your own intentions, interests, and expectations align — prior to engaging in any activities (or even RSVPing). There are many differences between, say, a swingers orgy hosted at a person’s house versus a play party in a full-time dungeon, and both are quite unlike a warehouse party with beds in the back. My point: While your experience may vary for a number of reasons, the venue itself plays a big role.

Some parties encourage full-on orgies . Some are play parties that focus more on kink and not so much on penetration or heavy sexual activity. But all these events prioritize sex positivity, particularly play parties, also known as kink/BDSM parties.

“Play parties are often diverse and offer a protected outlet to explore diverse desires, specifically in groups beyond couple exchange,” explains Venus Cuffs , a nightlife entrepreneur and play party producer. “Swingers parties are typically, but not always, for couples in the swinger Lifestyle — with a capital L — meaning they like to play as a couple, often to varying degrees. But [they] will arrive and leave the party together and partake in couple-on-couple swaps.”

Cuffs says that people outside the BDSM community are often surprised to learn that most fetish or kink parties actually limit penetration, oral play, and, in some cases, even heavy petting.

What are some tips for a first-time sex party attendee?

It can feel daunting to go to a party where any type of sexual activity is encouraged. To ensure that you have a good time, below are three hot tip recommendations, straight from Venus Cuffs herself.

  • Trust the source. Research the promote or group throwing and the party and make sure they prioritize consent and acceptance.
  • Safety first. Make sure the people throwing the party have enforceable no-tolerance and policies and consent monitors.
  • Communicate. Whether you’re going with a partner or alone, take time to mindfully think through desires, expectations and concerns. Check in with yourself often and prioritize your needs.

So, what are sex parties actually like?

Every experience is different, of course, so I spoke to eight women about their first time attending an event in one of these spaces. Curious to try out a sex party? Maybe you already RSVP’d and are now digging for details to figure out what you should expect. Either way, let their experiences give you a sneak preview on what it might involve.

“When I was 18, I joined a swingers website. I started dating a couple who frequented swinger parties. My first experience was exciting because I went with [them], so we got a lot of attention because we were young, attractive, and all exhibitionists. It got me really into the sensual experience and meeting people who enjoyed it, as well.

“Now, I frequently attend parties, but instead of swinger parties, I tend to find more queer-oriented parties and kink-focused events. A typical event will have a space where people can chat (and not play) and get to know each other, as well as other various stations set up for different scenes to have fun. Consent and rules of engagement are typically involved in good spaces.

“Find a play partner who you can bring to explore with. It's a lot easier when you have a friend to lean on for support. Also, nonsexual munches can be a great place to start and get to know people. Don't be afraid to say no and set boundaries. It's not free for all. If something or someone makes you uncomfortable, let someone know. “

“I had previously attended a few fetish parties in Scotland called Torture Gardens. However, my first sex party was in November 2022.

“There was a lot of latex, leather, and lace involved. At around 9 p.m., we proceeded to the dungeon which was across the street from my friend's home. The dungeon was divided into three parts: one had a couch, a wall of dildos, a standing cage, hoists, a spanking bench, and a big bed-like table. The second area featured a [penetrative machine] and a St. Andrew's Cross , along with a bench and multiple impact play toys, ranging from riding crops to floggers made with rubber spikes. The third room was for those who wanted to indulge in [ medical fetishism ]. That room was stocked with equipment needed for sounding, milking, pumping, nitrous gas, speculums, and a [gynecologist] chair with provisions to have multiple restraints.

“It was definitely one of the more enlightening experiences of my life. The amount of aftercare each of us offered [one another] was extraordinary. Snuggles being shared across the rooms, people laughing, people moaning, people crying. Oh yes — crying. I cried. I cried a lot.”

“I discovered the swinging lifestyle after separating from my first husband in 2016. I met someone on Tinder who introduced me to sex clubs, parties, and the lifestyle. My first party was at a sex club in New York City called Checkmate.

“It was a regular-looking apartment building. We took the elevator downstairs, paid the fee, and were welcomed into a bar area. Once ready to play, we went to a locker area where we could take our clothes off and get ‘comfortable.’ We made it to the play areas: a group play room, a semi-private playroom, and the private play rooms. We observed and decided to start the party by playing together. Soon after, we were invited by other couples to join them and engaged in swapping situations. It was hot, a positive experience for sure. The rest is history.”

“My first experience was a prepandemic party in a private loft. This was a performance-based event where the performers sometimes engaged in sex on stage. I saw Vonka and Lydia of the Bluenettes perform a milk-soaked kitten-[themed] act, which was the wildest, hottest thing I had ever seen in porn or real life. I was in the front row, just a couple of feet from two beautiful writhing bodies engaged in sapphic love and pleasure.

"Since then, I’ve been to several different kinds of parties. There are no typical parties, as they all differ depending on who is throwing them. I only frequent parties [organized] by those who prioritize the safety of everyone involved, [which means] having clear consent standards, agreements, and boundaries and [hiring] guardians for attendees to reach out to as a way to reduce harm. Those are the parties that I often recommend.”

“First, to clarify, I am not a member of the swing lifestyle. I am a member of the kink community and a BDSM practitioner. I have never had group sex , nor do I attend swing parties or share partners. I go to BDSM and kink-friendly parties, many of which are sex-positive. I am monogamous when dating and, although I engage in play at parties, it is not always inherently sexual.

“The first event I went to was a BDSM party for 18- to 35-year-olds. There were strict rules: no nudity and no penetrative play. I was really nervous, and my friend left me early on to go play with a friend of theirs, so I mostly spent the night talking to people and getting to know how a party works. There were dungeon monitors to make sure the scenes and people were safe, [as well as] toys you could borrow, a spanking bench, St. Andrew's cross, several hard points for suspension, and a massage table. I ended up meeting a guy who had never been to a party either and we fooled around a bit in a kind of vanilla way. “

“My first time was at the Hacienda in Brooklyn. Hacienda is a house, so it's a very social space —- at least, that has been my experience since I go to smaller parties where there is food prepared by a chef, an outdoor space where people talk, and play areas.

“Even though I knew the etiquette and theory — Playing Well With Others was a big help — I was a bit nervous. People told me I was a natural, but I think that's just because I was very mindful, communicative, and open to new experiences. I had sex with three people separately, [each] on a one-on-one basis and not as a group, and met a ton of sex-positive individuals. It felt like I finally found my people.

“Everyone is nice to each other, everyone takes consent very seriously. I feel extremely safe there. There's people that don't play with anyone and just socialize and there's others having seven-person orgies. You'll find whatever you want there."

“My first experience was very positive. I went with someone who was very experienced in the kink and swinging community. It was a bit of a shock to see people engaging in various sexual acts all in the open — not in a negative way, [I simply hadn’t] been in that environment before.

“[The party featured] good music, lots of sexy people, and really hot scenes — so hot that I stepped out of my comfort zone to openly masturbate in a less-crowded area, [where a woman then] asked to join me. She also asked me if her husband could watch. I was surprisingly okay with it, considering I’m not really into men.”

“I’ve never been to a sex party, but I have been to a number of sex clubs. The first one I ever went to was KitKat in Berlin. I honestly wasn’t shocked by anything happening around me, it was a pretty free and accepting environment. All clubs work differently, but usually they will take your phone or give you a locker [for it] and potentially a place to get towels and things for safe sex. People can be having sex all around you and generally will only engage if you give clear consent.

“I’ve been to a few other clubs of this nature around the world and they have similar vibes. Some are more exclusive than others, some are more queer-focused, but the ethos around it [all] is positivity and enjoyment.”
