At Borrow A Boat we're on a mission to make boating more accessible and to make it easier for you to get on the water. We believe boating should be available to everyone, and we can help the boating industry, boat owners, marinas, and everyone who wants to go boating by providing a 21st-century boating marketplace. Borrow A Boat is the best place to find and rent boats of all sorts, from a canal and riverboats across Europe to a sailing boat , motor yacht , catamaran across North America, the Mediterranean and Caribbean and further afield, along with some of the world's most impressive superyachts and luxury yacht charters.

A smaller alternative than a superyacht charter, catamarans are the fastest growing type of charter yacht at the moment and once you've sailed on one it's easy to see why. In terms of your ideal catamaran charter think of locations like Thailand, the Ionian Islands, BVI (British Virgin Islands), Croatian Adriatic, Ibiza, French riviera and Mallorca for your sailing adventure.

Types of Catamarans Available For Rent Or Charter In Spain:

When searching a geographical area on Borrow A Boat you can filter by the below boat types. There is also the option to further filter your searches by price, the number of guests, cabins or bathrooms, what year the catamaran yacht was launched, the boat length and the boat manufacturer.

Types of Catamarans Available:

Catamarans: Luxury catamarans are stable and spacious, with quick sailing performance, and and have been gaining in popularity in recent years. Better for larger groups, they have lots of room for water toys, and are big enough for a little privacy. A catamaran charter is easy and comfortable for novices not used to heeling and are loved by families due to their extra space when compared to a monohull sailing yacht. Typically far more luxurious than a sailboat the larger catamarans have en suite toilets and showers in the cabin as well as ample entertaining space in the saloon and on deck.

Power Catamaran: These motor boat are relatively new but have also been gaining in popularity as the two hulls keep the boat more stable when compared to a monohull. The wider beam also means more deck space and as they don't have sails or a mast, they have a lot more space on deck than a sailing catamaran rental or monohull. For a luxury catamaran charter , consider taking a crewed catamaran charter sailing vacation with an experienced skipper.

Catamaran Sailing Areas In Spain

On a catamaran yacht charter Spain, you've a wide range of options for a sailing holiday through Borrow A Boat. Fancy a bit of winter sun cruising the North East Trade Winds in the Canary Islands or a relaxed cruise along the Costa del Sol? There are a wide variety of options available in your choice of sailing holiday.

A classic catamaran boat rental holiday would be out of Ibiza Town or Balearic Island capital Palma de Mallorca. Enjoy the sailing and fun ashore on your luxury Balearic Island sailing holiday! Another important tourist hotspot is out of Lanzarote on the Canary Islands, tropical Atlantic Ocean islands with perfect winds and weather.

On the Spanish mainland you can do is cruise the coastline of the Costa Brava or Costa del Sol yacht charter on the Mediterranean Sea. Explore buzzing Barcelona and quaint Palamos on the Costa Brava or summer holiday capital Marbella and Torremelinos on the Costa del Sol. A Spain yacht charter is among the best you will find on the Western Mediterranean.

Crewed Catamaran Charter or Bareboat:

When it comes to a Spain catamaran charter you typically have two choices - bareboat or crewed catamaran charter.

When using Borrow A Boat you can filter all catamaran searches to be with or without skipper depending on what charter yachts you are looking for and below we cover some of the main points to consider for your catamaran hire.

Skippered Charter: A skippered yacht charter gives you the advantage of being able to get afloat without having to invest in getting sailing qualifications beforehand. For a crewed catamaran you will pay a fixed fee for the crew and skipper as well as their food and a tip at the end.

When you get to a luxury yacht charte r with crew these prices will increase and costs also depend on where you plan to sail to along with the size and type of yacht rental on your sailing holiday.

In some cases, skippers will also be the boat owner (typically day charter) which means they will know all the best - secluded beaches to show you the best that the area has to offer with their local knowledge.

For day trips you will often be able to use a skipper as well and prices will vary depending on the type of charter boat.

Bareboat Catamaran Charter : For skilled sailors, a bareboat charter is cheaper and gives more privacy for you and your charter guests. Many sailors prefer to be helming the charter yacht while choosing their own course, and provided you have the knowledge and relevant qualifications you can skipper these boats yourself.

Do You Need A Licence To Charter A Catamaran In Spain

If you are on a crewed Spain catamaran charter you do not need a license to sail - you can just turn up at the marina and go.

You do need a license if you are on a bareboat catamaran charter and in some countries a day skipper or ICC may not be enough for boats over 45 feet in length, you will need to check with the charter agent but here are some examples of typical sailing qualifications that will allow you to charter in most countries:

International Certificate of Competence: This is issued on request by your European sailing authority and you should automatically qualify with certain national sailing qualifications.

RYA Qualifications: If you have the following qualifications you will typically be able to take a bareboat charter out of Thailand (but it is worth checking as per above), these include Day Skipper , Coastal Skipper ( *sail or motor endorsement) or Yachtmaster.

American Sailing Association (ASA): The ASA 104 Bareboat certificate is commonly accepted but also check as per above

US Sailing: The International Proficiency Certificate is widely accepted and The Bareboat Cruising Certificate is also accepted in many cases.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should i consider when hiring a catamaran.

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

Do you have to pay a deposit when hiring a Catamaran in Spain?

You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the catamaran hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

What happens if my Catamaran breaks down?

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company and they can typically send someone from the charter base

What should I think of before I hire a Catamaran in Spain?

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the catamaran before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool in the evenings.

What Qualifications Do I need to hire a Catamaran?

If you want to sail without a skipper then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. If you choose to have a skipper on board your catamaran you won't require licences.

Where to sail in Spain?

The country's great reputation for tourism, both domestically and internationally, is due to the variety of destinations you can find- vacations for all tastes!

The Balearic Islands are nothing short of clear waters and 'postcard-worthy' beaches.  Ibiza, Mallorca, Menorca, and Formentera are the country's top nautical destination. Chartering a catamaran will allow you the opportunity to get to know this stunning archipelago not only comfortably, but safely.

If we focus on the Costa Brava, expect to be sailing through turquoise waters and enjoying the  beautiful landscapes that make up the small towns like Cadaques, Roses or Tossa de Mar. You can also spend your time simply relaxing and sailing from cove to cove. You have to admit, these all sound like good options for your next vacation.

Sailing further south, we are sure you'll fall in love with the charm of the Costa Blanco and places like Denia and Javea. Enjoy a delicious paella in the port of Valencia or stroll by the colorful homes of Villajoyosa .

During the colder seasons, you can't miss a visit to sunny and warm Canary Islands . Each of the eight islands has something different to offer from- adventures, relaxation, gastronomy, and leisure- these islands truly have it all!

And last but not least, Andalusia:  Marbella , Almeria , Malaga , Cadiz... It's too hard for us to just choose one destination! They are all worth a visit.

The price of chartering a catamaran can vary depending on several factors. The most relevant ones are the season (high or low), and the destination in which you decide to rent. But don't forget the rental duration, model and age of the vessel, as well as if a skipper is requested on board can also impact the boat rental price.

We booked Catamaran Orsom for a Saturday evening and it was beautiful. We took our own prossecco and watched the sun set to the sound of Jazz. We were also given blankets and everyone was very friendly. I would highly recommend.

Great value for money, amazing views of the city. Staff very friendly jazz player very entertaining.

I took my son, daughter and hubby on this ride, we enjoyed Jazz music whilst watching the waves. The children were made to feel extra special by the captain when he invited them to Sail the boat. I definitely recommend this excursion and certainly worth the money!

The ride was smooth and relaxing and there is plenty of space on board to hang out with friends and drink. Nice music as well. The price is reasonable and staff were very friendly.

We are confident that our prices are the most competitive and transparent in the market.

Sailing around Spain

Whatever you want from a sailing holiday, you can almost certainly find it in Spain. Fine sunshine, brilliant food, happy and hospitable locals, and a massive variety of sailing opportunities - from bobbing around idyllic bays and calas to island-hopping in the Med to embracing the winds out in the Atlantic. There's plenty of wildlife to spot, and you'll never see so many stars in the sky as you can in the Canary islands.

Spain has a long and famous history of sailing (Christopher Columbus sailed for Spain, the world-beating Spanish Armada, etc…) and their islands are perfectly equipped for sea-farers to enjoy today. You'll find excellent marina facilities, cute and historic port towns, and authentic local culture - including local fisherman, flamenco dancers, freshly-cooked paella, and sangria on tap. A blissful week awaits, and we can help you find and book your ideal yacht or catamaran.

Our Yacht Charter base in Spain - Palma, Portocolom in Mallorca, Ibiza, Barcelona, Tenerife, and Arrecife in Lanzarote

SAILING RATING:  Beginner / Intermediate - The Balearic islands (we have bases in Palma, Portocolom and Ibiza) and Barcelona on the mainland are in the sheltered cruising ground of the Mediterranean sea, and suitable for sailors of all abilities.

The Canary islands (our bases in Arrecife and Tenerife) are based in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, offer more challenging sailing, with stronger winds, and are better suited for people who have solid experience of how to handle a boat.

WHEN TO GO:  The sailing season technically runs from March to November , with peak season being in July and August, but there's sunshine for much of the year, and there's great sailing to be had outside of the season.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  You'll need an ICC (which you can convert from an RYA DaySkipper or equivalent ) or above to charter a boat in Spain. If you're not qualified, we can find you a professional skipper .

VISA REQUIREMENTS:  Spain is part of the EU , which means UK and EU passport holders can travel there at will. US and Australian passport holders do not need a visa unless planning to stay in Europe for longer than 90 days.

GETTING THERE:  There are a number of airports right across Spain and the islands, which are all well connected to the rest of Europe as it is a popular tourist destination. There's also good rail, road, bus and ferry links to get you to our bases. We can help arrange transfers to or from the marina, as well as helping you get provisions on board if your flight arrives late at night.

In the Balearic islands , for Palma and Portocolom it's best to land in Palma International airport, from which you can get to Palma in 15 minutes or Portocolom in 35. Similarly, our base in Ibiza is only a 30 minute transfer from Ibiza airport, which connects all over Europe. There's a choice of three airports near to our base in Barcelona , the closest is the main El Prat international airport (a 25 minute drive away), but it's also possible to land at Girona airport (1h15 away) or Reus airport (1h35 away). In the Canary islands , you'll land practically in the marina if you fly to the main Tenerife airport, and it's just 11 minutes drive away once you've grabbed your bags. And our base in Arrecife is just 14 minutes drive from Lanzarote airport.

Where to sail in Spain

We charter yachts and catamarans from six bases in Spain - Palma and Portocolom in Mallorca and Ibiza in the Mediterranean Balearic islands, Barcelona on the mainland, and Tenerife and Arrecife in the Canary islands. See below for ideas of where to sail when you get there (But be sure to check out our detailed destination guides to find out more).

PALMA, MALLORCA   Ideas of where to sail: There's relaxing times to be had in touring the many calas (bays) of Mallorca, and there are over 365 beaches! You can see them all by circumnavigating the 160 nM of Mallorca, or head up the (better) East coast to Menorca and back, visit the wilderness of Cabrera, or, if you're after more of a voyage, it's a 56 nM hop to Ibiza.

PORTOCOLOM, MALLORCA   Ideas of where to sail: You're well-placed for exploring the superb East coast of Mallorca, with all it's incredible cliffs, bays and calas. Island-hop to nearby Menorca (less touristy, and even prettier than Mallorca), before returning via the wild islands of Cabrera to the South to get a taste of everything the area can offer.

IBIZA   Ideas of where to sail: Ibiza is big enough for outstanding tranquillity, excellent beaches, beautiful calas and historic old towns - as well as late-night parties. A circular trip around the island is 60 nM, so you could expand it by hopping to nearby Formentera, which is largely off the beaten track and boasts pristine white sandy beaches over 6 miles long!

BARCELONA   Ideas of where to sail: There's a choice of sailing South along the coast to Tarragona, once the capital of the Roman Empire, and the old town of Sitges, or North to the fortresses of Roses. En-route in either direction are brilliant beaches, cliffs, and coastal towns to explore.

TENERIFE   Ideas of where to sail: There's blissful beaches, relaxing old towns and national parks to explore on Tenerife, or hop over to La Gomera to check out where Columbus set sail for America! If you're willing to put in the hours, it's also possible to sail to Gran Canaria or super-remote La Frontera.

ARRECIFE, LANZAROTE   Ideas of where to sail: Head to Papagayo bay on the south coast of Lanzarote - arguably the best place to anchor and snorkel in the whole of the Canary islands, then hop to Fuerteventura and the wilderness of Los Lobos, named after the colony of monk seals there. Or sail to the North to the Chinijo archipalego, Europe's biggest national marine park, and play with the dolphins and whales - they love this place as much as you do!

Cost of a Sailing Holiday in Spain?

Prices change depending upon what sort of boat you are chartering, and when you would like to charter, and yachting offers great value for money because the fee includes a full-day activity, a means of transport and your overnight accommodation!

Charters are normally in periods of a week, from Saturday (check-in at 5pm) to Saturday (check-out at 9am), though you're required to be back at the charter base on the Friday evening. You can charter a 3-cabin yacht for as little as €1,140/week (including end cleaning) , 4-cabin yacht from €1,250/week, or catamarans from €2,800/week - Use the pink box above for live prices and availability.

In addition to the charter fee, there is an end-cleaning fee to be paid, and you'll need to leave a security deposit on check-in (similar to a hire car, and usually placed as a pre-authorisation on a credit card).  You also need to consider fuel and Mooring fees .

You can also add transfers, an outboard motor, early check-in, security deposit insurance or other extras to your booking (if they are not already included) for an additional fee.  We can also arrange for a Skipper , Hostess or Chef to be on board - in Spain, these normally cost an average of €1,260 per week, excluding tips.

Main sights in Spain

If you love nature, you can visit beautiful national parks such as the Teide, the Picos de Europa or the Timanfaya. Of all European countries, the most IBAs (Important Bird Areas) can be found in Spain. We also recommend that you visit the Marimutra botanical garden where you can admire 6, 000 different flowers and plants. This wonderful place can be found in the southern part of Costa Brava in Blanes. Barcelona is the second-largest city in Spain and an important port of the Adriatic Sea. The main sight here is the La Sagrada Familia – the Expiatory Church of the Holy Family, which is a World Heritage Site. Further famous sights include the Santa Maria del Mar cathedral and the Picasso Museum. The town centre has a green area called Parc de la Ciutadella; its fountain was inspired by the Trevi Fountain in Rome.

Gastronomy of Spain

The paella is among the greatest delicacies; it is made with good quality rice coloured yellow by saffron. They put many types of meat and vegetables in it. Popular soups include cool gazpacho and warm cocido. Tapas is also popular, and we differentiate several types. They prepare it with olive, sausage, vegetables or cheese. The famous Jamon Serano ham is a delicacy that you must definitely taste. Churros is a popular dessert, and so is the Madeleine called Magdalena. As for drinks, they have sherry, Malaga wine and Sangria.

If you sail around Spain, you can explore the other wonderful areas, leaving from Malaga. Torremolinos, Benalmadena, Fuengirola, Mijas Costa and Marbella are also great destinations with several exciting things to do. More Spain sailing routes

Spain sailing holidays: Explore the wonderful shore segments!

Its pleasant climate and natural beauty make Spain an attractive destination among tourists. Our article [...]

The large country has a very diverse climate. There are large fluctuations inland, and there is a great number of sunny hours in the eastern and southern parts with a low level of precipitation. Summers are hot everywhere, with the exception of the Atlantic shores. The average temperature is 25 °C, and the maximum temperature can get as high as 35 °C. Out of all the waters at the shores of the country, the Atlantic Ocean’s is the coldest. The average temperature is around 20 °C.

The Spanish islands have different climates. The Canary Islands have a pleasant subtropical climate, while there is a greater fluctuation on the Balearic Islands. It often rains in the summer, and the amount of precipitation is higher during the winter. Between the autumn and spring periods, stronger winds arrive, for instance, the Mistral, the Vendaval or the Sirocco. We recommend water enthusiasts visit Spain in the summer, and the autumn period is perfect for visiting the historic and natural sights.

The geographical location, as well as the orographic conditions of Spain, made its climate particularly diverse. Spain is the most climatically diverse country in Europe. Spain is characterized by the overlap of one fundamental climatic division (between humid and semiarid and arid zones) by another (the threefold division of the peninsula into maritime, continental, and mountain climates).

Some regions can be very cold during the winter and extremely hot in the summer. The vast central plateau, or Meseta, has a more continental influenced climate. On the Mediterranean coast, the climate is moderate with rain in spring and autumn. The Balearic Islands have a maritime climate, with cool, wet winters and warm, dry summers.

On the central and southern coast of the Mediterranean, the sun shines quite often even in winter. On the coast of the Mediterranean Sea and in the small Atlantic coastline of the Gulf of Cádiz winter is mild. Temperatures range between 20°C and 30°C. Wet periods are between September and October. The months of January until February provide the coldest time of the year. In comparison with the northern coast, the rains are rarer and sunshine is more frequent. This is due to the fact that the Mediterranean coasts of Spain, exposed as they are to the east and south, are relatively sheltered from Atlantic weather fronts. Along the Mediterranean coast and in the Balearic Islands, summer is hot and sunny, as is typical of the Mediterranean climate , the air is humid but sea breezes temper the heat during the day.

Summer is cool and quite rainy on the Atlantic coast, where even in July and August the sky is often covered with clouds, and the sea is not warm, barely touching 21 °C in August.

The Coastal Mediterranean region is marked by Leveche winds: hot, dry, easterly or southeasterly air currents that originate over North Africa. The climate and landscape are determined by the Atlantic Ocean winds whose moisture gets trapped by the mountains circumventing the Spanish Atlantic coast.

“  We went on the sunset trip - it was superb! The staff were kind and well organised. The boat was spacious and clean. We enjoyed ourselves from start to finish. Such beautiful views, warm sea to swim and snorkel in, nets to relax and dry off in and then the stunning sunset to top it all off. Highly recommend!  ”

- Starguy83 - (Tripadvisor) -

“  Amazing!!!This trip was amazing nice people that take care of everything! Very kind and enough delicious food and drinks on board!! The price is nothing for what you get!  ”

- Jennika E - (TripAdvisor) -

“  My friends and I (all University students) were looking for a boat cruise and found this one. We did the 6hr catamaran boat cruise to Tabarca and it was the highlight of our trip! The boat cruise included one alcoholic drink, fresh fruit and snacks constantly, a lovely lunch, beautiful views from the ocean and snorkelling off the boat at Tabarca island with tons of fish to entertain us. The staff were incredibly friendly, the boat wasn't overly full which left lots of room for us to have our own space but still meet some other travellers. When snorkelling they fed the fish near us so we could swim with them. Honestly, could not say enough good things about our trip and recommend it to all ages and groups!.  ”

“  Fabulous boat party in Alicante!. Booked this experience for my daughters hen weekend in Alicante. I personally did not attend but having paid for this outing on the high seas I wanted to ensure that it met their expectations . I exchanged emails with Fanny who was extremely pleasant and helpful. The bank transfer was easy to negotiate so the girls didn’t have to deal with the final payment on arrival. On their return home the party could not have been more enthusiastic. They said there was lots of room on the boat to dance and relax. The crew were friendly, cheerful and accommodating. The snacks and drinks on offer were plentiful and the dj was happy to take requests. They enjoyed having the opportunity to swim and fortunately nobody was seasick. All in all it’s seems to have been one of the highlights in their packed itinerary. On the company website they also advertise days trips for those who want something a little less energetic, these look ideal for families.  ”

- 848laurents -

“  Very good activity. Top crew. Visit to Tabarca Island. Nice and fun. Tabarca is the only inhabited island in the Region of Valencia and is located opposite the city of Alicante, 11 nautical miles offshore and near the Santa Pola headland. In fact, it’s more than just an island: it’s a small archipelago that comprises the islets of La Cantera, La Galera and La Nao as well as the Isla de Tabarca itself.  ”

- Jonathan Bate - (Facebook) -

“  I booked the boat for 15 people for a birthday party. We had an amazing time! The staff were fantastic, they let us play music, enjoy all of the boat, served plenty of drinks and cleaned up after our fun! Highly reccomend them, great customer service and they couldn't have been more acomodating.  ”

- Travelabout2u -

“  Brilliant day out!! I cannot recommend this experience enough! Crew were polite and professional and clearly work brilliantly as a team. They were attentive and multilingual so able to answer any query. The sail was up and everyone was safe and comfortable and enjoying the trip. Only an hour and a half travel each way which flew by and nearly three hours swimming and snorkelling in the warm clear seas. Option to go to the island to the beach or wander but we stayed at the boat as my girls wanted to see the fish. An abundance of drinks and snacks on board, all freshly prepared. Staff were relaxed but professional and on the ball. Decks were cleaned and tables wiped, glasses cleared and washed, drinks chilled and bread fresh. It was worth the cost. Better, I would imagine, with fewer people... boat holds 62 and there were about 40 of us so more space for shade or sun bathing. Suitable for couples families or groups of young people . Paella was delivered by boat...hot and freshly cooked, chicken, vegetarian or seafood and really delicious...the fish devoured the sbsll amount left over. A great day out so thanks to all the crew and organizers...very much enjoyed!  ”

“  Amazing boat ride! Crew is very nice! Very much recommended.  ”

Rossinavi Seawolf X launch May 2024

The 140-foot-long, 45-foot wide Seawolf X that Rossinavi the just launched in Italy is…different. And I mean that as a compliment. I think it’s cool. And as anyone who’s familiar with catamaran design can tell you, it’s not always easy to design a cool looking catamaran.

But this new breed of cat is designed to be more than just cool. Sure, the Fulvio de Simoni Yacht Design exterior and a Meyer Davis Studio interior are striking. But Rossinavi have also used AI and other innovative tech to ensure this hybrid-powered supercat is as sustainable and environmentally friendly as possible.

“After years of study and construction, it is now a source of satisfaction and pride for us to witness the launch of project Seawolf X , the first hybrid-electric multihull vessel,” says Rossinavi Chief Operating Officer Federico Rossi. “This yacht showcases remarkable technological innovations in both power management and propulsion technologies, marking the beginning of a new chapter in next-generation vessels.’

And since the one of the main goals is to reduce to reduce CO2 emissions, Seawolf X propulsion is powered by batteries and solar panels that can operate in emission-free electric mode for day trips and 80% electric mode on longer voyages.

Orcas have sunk another vessel off the European coast. Why won't they stop ramming boats?

Ocean Race

The orcas are at it again: for the seventh time in four years, a pod of whales has sunk a boat after ramming it in Moroccan waters off the Strait of Gibraltar.

The 15 metre-long yacht Alborán Cognac, which carried two people, encountered the highly social apex predators at 9am local time on Sunday, Spain's maritime rescue service said.

The passengers reported feeling sudden blows to the hull and rudder before water started to seep into the sailboat. It is not known how many orcas were involved.

After alerting rescue services, a nearby oil tanker took them onboard and carried them to Gibraltar, a British overseas territory on Spain's southern coast.

Nothing could be done to save the sailboat, which drifted and eventually sank.

It's the latest incident in what has become a trend of hundreds of interactions between orcas and boats since the "disruptive behaviour" was first reported in the region in May 2020.

The origin of this new behaviour has baffled scientists, though the leading theory suggests this "social fad" began as a playful manifestation of the whales' curiosity.

Where have orcas interacted with boats?

The latest data from the Atlantic Orca Working Group (GTOA), an organisation that contributes to the animals' conservation and management, shows that there have been at least 673 interactions since 2020.

GTOA defines interactions as instances when orcas react to the presence of approaching boats with or without physical contact.

The map below shows the highest numbers of encounters from April to May 2024 took place off Spain's southern coast in the Strait of Gibraltar (red zones), with some lesser activity in surrounding areas (yellow zones).

Orca encounters

A 2022 peer-reviewed study published in the Marine Mammal Science journal found the orcas in these areas preferred interacting with sailboats — both monohulls (72 per cent) and catamarans (14 per cent) — with an average length of 12 metres.

A clear pattern emerged of orcas striking their rudders, while sometimes also scraping the hulls with their teeth. Such attacks often snapped the rudder, leaving the boat unable to navigate.

"The animals bumped, pushed and turned the boats," the authors of the report said.

Adding this week's encounter, there have been seven reported cases of orcas damaging a boat so badly that it has sunk, though the people onboard were rescued safely each time.

In June 2023, a run-in with the giant mammals in the Strait of Gibraltar forced the crew competing in The Ocean Race to drop its sails and raise a clatter in an attempt to scare the approaching orcas off.

No-one was injured, but Team JAJO skipper Jelmer van Beek said that it had been a "scary moment".

"Three orcas came straight at us and started hitting the rudders," he said.

"Impressive to see the orcas, beautiful animals, but also a dangerous moment for us as a team ... Luckily, after a few attacks, they went away."

After analysing 179 videos and photos of these types of interactions, which lasted on average 40 minutes, researchers concluded there was no reason to classify the events as intentionally hostile behaviour.

"The behaviour of orcas when interacting with boats is not identified as aggressive," they said.

"One of their main motivations has been identified as competition with boats for speed."

Still, the researchers of the study admitted they were not sure what triggered the novel behaviour in 2020.

"We are not yet certain what the origin of these interactions is, but it is still suspected that it could be a curious and playful behaviour," they wrote.

"[The behaviour] could be self-induced, or on the other hand it could be a behaviour induced by an aversive incident and therefore a precautionary behaviour."

Are the same orcas responsible for these incidents?

Out of around 49 orcas living in the Strait of Gibraltar, GTOA researchers found a total of 15 whales  from at least three different communities participated in the unusual interactions with boats between 2020 and 2022.

Most of those that engaged with greater intensity were juveniles, though it's unclear if others have since joined the group.

These giant mammals, which belong to the dolphin family, can measure up to eight metres and weigh up to six tonnes as adults.

The director of the Orca Behaviour Institute, Monika Wieland Shields, has said there is no evidence to prove the theory these whales were seeking vengeance against humans for a past trauma.

"While I'm sure it feels like an attack for the people on board, for the whales themselves, it really looks more like play behaviour," she said.

"There's something intriguing or entertaining to them about this [boat rudder] mechanism and they're just showing a lot of curiosity about it."

Ms Wieland said it's likely this new behaviour spread through the population as a kind of "social fad".

"Orcas are highly intelligent, very social animals, and with that comes a tendency to be curious about and explore your environment," she said.

"One thing that we see are these kind of fad behaviours that will appear in a certain population.

"One whale discovers something, they find it entertaining or interesting, or fun — it's some type of game. And then they will teach that to other members of their family group."

Are orcas dangerous to humans?

While orcas have earned their fearsome reputation for preying on other marine animals, there is no record of them killing humans in the wild.

In captivity, orcas have killed four people since the 1990s, though it's unclear whether the deaths were accidental or deliberate attempts to cause harm.

Ms Shields said she was worried the recent interactions between orcas and boats would skew people's perceptions of these mammals.

"I am concerned that people are going to react with fear, potentially injure or shoot at some of these whales," Ms Shields said.

"We really need to educate boaters about the best things that they can do to make themselves less attractive to the whales and the best case scenario would be the whales lose interest in this and move onto something less destructive."

Spain's Transport Ministry advises that whenever boats observe any changes in the behaviour of orcas — such as in their direction or speed — they should leave the area as soon as possible and avoid further disturbance to the animals.

The ministry also states every interaction between a ship and an orca must be reported to authorities.

Spain warns small ships of possible orca run-ins after killer whale causes boat to sink

An orca knocked a 50-foot boat in moroccan waters several times, damaging its rudder and causing a leak. , by joseph wilson | associated press • published may 14, 2024.

Following the ramming of a small boat by an orca in the Strait of Gibraltar, authorities in Spain issued recommendations Tuesday that small vessels stick to the coastline in that region to avoid often-scary interactions with killer whales during summer months.

In the latest incident, two people aboard a 15-meter (50-foot) boat in Moroccan waters requested help from Spain’s maritime rescue service Sunday after reporting that an orca knocked the craft several times, damaging its rudder and causing a leak. The people were picked up by a passing oil tanker summoned by the rescuers, and their boat later sank.

Spain’s ministries for transport and the environment, along with its merchant marines, issued notices Tuesday urging both sailing boats and small motorboats to beware of orcas between May and August in the area between the Strait of Gibraltar and the Gulf of Cadiz.

The Atlantic Orca Working Group, a team of Spanish and Portuguese marine life researchers who study killer whales near the Iberia Peninsula, says were 197 such known interactions in 2021 and another 207 in 2022.

A pod of orcas even disrupted a sailing race last year, when a boat sailing from the Netherlands to Italy had a 15-minute encounter with the animals, prompting the crew to drop their craft's sails and raise a clatter to fend them off.

There have been no reports of attacks against swimmers. The interactions on boats seem to stop once the vessel becomes immobilized.

The researchers say that the killer whales seem to be targeting boats in a wide arc covering the western coast of the Iberia Peninsula, from the waters near the Strait of Gibraltar to Spain’s northwestern Galicia.
