AMERICA'S CUP
This design was in response to a late program starting in January by Irvine Laidlaw of Singapore to build a new design 1 tonner for the 1985 Singapore Admiral's Cup team and later for competition in the Southern Cross Cup in Australia. This is the first IOR design we have done since the actual 1985 rule changes were announced in November, thus it reflects our interpretations of this year's rule, and is a development of the design theme for our two very successful 43 footers "SNAKE OIL" (Class C winner SORC) and "DRAKE'S PRAYER" (top boat Australian Admiral's Cup trials).
In general terms the approach was to develop a design that would have good all round performance with more emphasis on light airs performance than our previous designs. Our goal was to equal or better the speed of all our previous 1 ton designs in all conditions, that is to equal the extreme performance of our Southern Hemisphere 40's such as "EXADOR", "PACIFIC SUNDANCE" in moderate fresh conditions and at the same time better the performance of our smaller designs eg. "SIRIUS" (third in 1984 1 Ton Worlds), "EPIC LASS" (New Zealand Admiral's Cup team), "CARRO CHEFE" and "SAGA" (Brazilian Admiral's Cup team) in lighter conditions.
To achieve this goal the boat has a little more sail area and displacement than any of these existing designs, is almost as long as the lengthy Southern Hemisphere boats, but significantly narrower at beam waterline.
The narrower beam waterline is in response to the changed CGF formula which allows an increase in stability over last year's designs whilst at the same time obtaining a substantial decrease in wetted surface area.
Stern sections are modeled very much on those developed for "SNAKE OIL" and "DRAKE'S PRAYER" being of only moderate beam but very fair through the aft measurement stations allowing higher top speeds to be reached.
With an SHR of 15.8 some may not consider this to be a fast light weather boat. However, due to the very narrow beam waterline and the deep but small area keel and low wetted surface area hull form, the boat will be fast in light weather. Performance prediction work indicates that this design will be significantly faster in all conditions than all of our previous boats with the exception of hard reaching in heavy airs when our Southern Hemisphere 40's can just match this boat, conditions when these boats are presently considered invincible.
The rig is very much our usual fractional although the fore triangle is a little taller at the expense of some mainsail area to trade off some of this style of boat's fantastic upwind performance to boost running and broad reaching speed in light airs, the only conditions when our earlier designs appear to be a little fragile.
Construction is our normal highly developed Kevlar sandwich utilizing a PVC vacuum bagged core. This type of construction provides for a very stiff boat and clean roomy interior.
The weight is equivalent or better than using carbon fibre, the cost significantly less and structural behaviors in an overload situation is far more acceptable.
This design, like our 43 footers, should show all round capabilities with no weak areas in any conditions or directions.

Sailing at the Paris 2024 Olympics
Here's all you need to know about sailing at Paris 2024.
Sailing schedule and venue at Paris 2024
Sailing will take place more than 400 miles south of Paris in the city of Marseille. The revamped Roucas-Blanc Marina, renamed Marseille Marina for the Games, offers ideal conditions, with relatively constant and suitable winds, along with good spectating positions for up to 14,000 fans.
The events will run from 28 July to 8 August.
There are 10 medal events – skiff (men and women), windsurfing (men’s and women), dinghy (men, women and mixed), multihull (mixed) and kite (men and women).
Medal race schedule:
1 August – men’s skiff (49er) and women’s skiff (49erFX)
2 August – men’s and women’s windsurfing (iQFOiL)
6 August – men’s dinghy (ILCA 7) and women’s dinghy (ILCA 6)
7 August – mixed multihull (Nacra 17)
7 August – mixed dinghy (470)
8 August – men’s and women’s kite (Formula Kite Class).
Scoring and rules in sailing
Sailing has ushered in winds of change, with boat classes overhauled to ensure gender balance and to make the sport more spectacular. Competitors sail in an opening series of races, accruing points equivalent to where they finish each time (eg. one point for first); points for their worst race are discarded at various intervals. The top 10 boats then compete in a medal race, or medal series, with double points awarded and added to their total.
Since the Tokyo Games, some changes have been made. The Finn, won by a Brit at the last six Olympics, has gone, the two 470 classes have been merged into a mixed event and there are two high-speed newcomers: kiteboarding and also windsurfing board iQFOil, which incorporates new sprint slalom and marathon race formats.
The 10 events feature six types of boat that require either one or two-person crews. Each nation is restricted to one boat per event, although an athlete can compete in more than one boat class. Events comprise an opening series and a medal race (medal series for windsurfing and kiteboarding).
Races are conducted around a course of marker buoys and take place over one to four laps. The number of laps is decided by the race committee shortly before each race and depends on wind and weather conditions.
There are up to four race areas laid out at the same time and two events can be held simultaneously on the same course. The shape of the area varies for each event; some events race on an upwind/downwind course, while others sail around four marks laid out in a trapezoid-shaped course – meaning they contend with wind from all directions. The boats must pass the marker buoys a certain amount of times and in a predetermined order.
Multiple races per event can be scheduled on each day. If weather is unsuitable, extra races per day may be sailed.
Who has won the most medals in Olympic sailing?
Great Britain are the most successful nation in the sport at the Olympics, winning 64 medals (31 gold). The United States are second with 61 medals (19 gold).
Great Britain topped the sailing medal table at the Tokyo Olympics, with three gold, one silver and one bronze.
Host nation France, Germany and Great Britain are the only countries to have qualified a boat in all 10 events at the Paris Games.

Rusty nails, other debris litter popular beach after homemade pontoon washes ashore
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Coast Guard and state Boating Division crews responded to Nimitz Beach after a homemade pontoon washed ashore and broke into pieces, creating a dangerous situation.
On Friday, three large chunks of wood and fiberglass sat in the sand at Nimitz Beach near the Coast Guard Air Station in Kalaeloa. The remnants of the homemade pontoon left beachgoers puzzled and worried.
“What the hell is that? If there’s anything large, I’ll remove it if I can, but this was too much,” said Barbara Billand, who walks the beach regularly watching out for monk seals.
A person who was camping nearby says the boat wreck happened mid-morning Thursday.
For more than a quarter mile, wood, rusty nails, styrofoam, plastic barrels and a lifejacket were strewn across the beach and in the water.
Cade Inchinose says he swam into something strange at the beach. “Something really flat. I thought it was a rock at first and it hit the back of my heel and I thought what is that,” said Ichinose.
“It felt like some plastic part that hit my feet and that’s when we decided to get out of the water,” he added.
Federal lifeguards from White Plains Beach saw photos of the 30-foot homemade pontoon before the surf smashed it into piece.
“At first I thought, OK is there anybody out there? Did this come off something. Was this somebody’s boat,” said Kyle Shifflett, White Plains Beach lifeguard.
Lifeguards picked up 17 plastic barrels from the pontoon.
“There was a lot of wood and so we were moving all of that up making sure that the nails weren’t pointed up because there’s a lot of kids and there’s a lot of dogs come over here too and the last thing we want is someone to get hurt,” Shifflett said.
They managed to get the large pieces off the beach with tow straps and their vehicle.
The boat’s owner is still a mystery.
A camper says a man who appeared to be with the boat Thursday spoke with Coast Guard and Navy police and then got on surfboard and swam in the Diamond Head direction.
The state Boating Division says repeated calls to the registered owner on file have gone unanswered while the Coast Guard removed potential pollution.

The One Ton Cup was so named because it was presented in 1899 by the Cercle de la Voile de Paris (CVP) for competition by boats with fixed keels, rated at one ton or less under the French tonnage (or Godinet) rule of 1892. Quarter Tonner is a race sailboat range that enables all boats of its type to compete each other in real time. Inspired by One Tonner and Half Tonner, Quarter Tonner type evolved gradually from a common sailboat rating called RORC. This rating was originally for 15ft, from 1967. Later it was fixed at 18ft within the International Offshore Rule (IOR), and changed again, in 1978, to 18,55ft.
The One Ton Cup regattas were at the beginning of races between one-tonner sailing dinghies, according to the 1899 Godinet rule.
