About Savannah

The 83.50-metre (273’11”) Savannah is the first hybrid motoryacht. She is the first superyacht to feature an eco-friendly blend of single diesel engine, three gensets, batteries, propeller, azimuting thruster and a streamlined hull shape. SAVANNAH yacht interior

The SAVANNAH yacht is described as a masterpiece of design, and her interior has several unusual features. Twelve guests find space in her six cabins which were designed by the CG Design.

The master suite even has a private balcony, and many of the cabins were designed with unconventional rounded shapes to give the yacht a unique touch.

She has a hammam, open-concept gym, a spa and indoor glass balconies with large TV walls that can be individually programmed.

However, the most sought-after feature among charter guests is the underwater viewing lounge which can be transformed into a cinema if requested.

It was custom-designed and is unique to SAVANNAH. She also has a basketball court on board and never fails to surprise her guests with luxurious amenities.

Specifications

The SAVANNAH yacht was built by the Dutch shipyard Feadship and delivered to her owner in 2015.

She is 83.5 metres (273.11 ft) long with a 12.5-metre (41 ft) beam and a 3.95-metre (13 ft) draft. Her gross tonnage lies at 2,250 tons, and she sails under the flag of the Cayman Islands.

Her unique hybrid engines allow her to reach a range of 6,500 nautical miles. SAVANNAH’s top speeds lie at 17 knots, although she cruises most comfortably at 14 knots.

She was the first hybrid superyacht delivered by Feadship and remains one of their most elaborate projects.

The SAVANNAH yacht has a beautiful silvery-white exterior with large windows. Guests can enjoy her four decks with a large pool aft.

Her top deck features a spacious jacuzzi with fantastic views. Since SAVANNAH is available for charter, she carries a variety of toys and equipment on board.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is 83067114-1024x683.jpg

Most notable are her three jet skis, two laser sailboats, four seabobs, three kayaks, and four standup paddleboards.

She also has four mountain bikes, inflatables, a trampoline, and towable toys available for the enjoyment of the guests.

SAVANNAH has four tenders, two of which are 9.5 meters (31 ft) long. Like her interior, the exterior of SAVANNAH was designed by the Parisian design office CG Design.

Her owner bought SAVANNAH for a total price of US $140 million in 2015. She generates additional annual running costs of US $10 to 15 million.

Motor Yacht

Widely considered to be one of the first true hybrid motor yachts, Savannah is an 83.50 metre superyacht which represented a new phase of evolution for Feadship. The eco-friendly blend of single diesel engine, three gensets, batteries, propeller, azimuting thruster and a streamlined hull shape, created Savannah, one of the most award winning Feadships on the water.

Her ‘floating superstructure’ is yet another example of innovation through design, giving Savannah a profile which is immediately recognisable yet timeless.

Savannah was built by Feadship in 2015, with exterior design from De Voogt Naval Architects and CG Design - who also played a role in the interior styling.  Savannah is also painted entirely metallic sea foam green, with exception of her mast domes, and features an underwater lounge where guests can watch the underwater universe go by in complete serenity and unity with the uncharted.

Not short of design elements, the room also features a pool, cinema and special glass to compliment the series of design and industry firsts that were met on her launch.

Savannah - Yacht for Charter

From €1,200,000 EUR

Key specifications

  • Length 83.5m (274ft)
  • Year 2015 / 2020
  • Builder Feadship

With six chic ensuite cabins, a SAVANNAH yacht charter can welcome up to 12 guests onboard. Located on the upper deck is the owner’s suite, a luxurious light-filled private space, linked to a spacious outdoor seating area, dining room, and office.

Situated in the middle of this stunning superyacht is a state-of-the-art elevator, giving you easy access to each of the 4 decks. Guests can travel from the panoramic views of the main deck to the comforts of the underwater lounge at the touch of a button.

Each cabin and lounge has been designed to maximise the visual and human experience, the awe-inspiring underwater lounge and master suite, with its wall of glass and vast oval skylight, being two notable moments in this yacht’s interior story.

Interior Design & Engineering

The interior of the SAVANNAH motor yacht is flooded with light thanks to her peerless use of wall glass that wraps around her decks. She’s home to the first-ever Nemo lounge: a partially submerged room with glass walls that allow guests to literally see under the waterline.

You get a real sense of space when you head inside the main deck of the SAVANNAH yacht. The main salon is secured by sliding curved-glass doors and feels like an extension of the aft deck. It leads to a second salon, with a further salon and dining area on the owner’s deck above.

With just 12 guests accommodated across her 83.5m, you can expect to sleep in spacious rooms. The upper deck is home to a luxurious, light-flooded owner’s suite with a wall of glass and a large skylight, plus a separate office, a marble en suite, and a large seating area outside. Each of the other cabins—a VIP, two doubles and two convertibles—boast large windows to increase the feeling of space and maximise your connection with the ocean.

Not to be overlooked is her impeccable eco-credentials. As Feadship’s first-ever hybrid superyacht, the trailblazing SAVANNAH combines an efficient hull design with impressive electric-diesel performance for greener—and quieter—cruising.

Yacht facilities & Entertainment

An overwhelming number of features are waiting for you on the SAVANNAH yacht. On a practical level, amenities like her touch-and-go helipad and elevator serving four decks make her easily accessible.

Other facilities, like her 9m swimming pool, full beach club, gym, spa and Hammam, are particularly attractive during a charter. You could even make use of the DJ station and throw your own party or indulge in treatments from the onboard masseuse and beautician.

Her comprehensive modern art collection will also keep you transfixed. For example, the double-height video monitors that line the passage between the two main deck salons can be programmed to display static or flowing abstract images

Toys and Crew

You’ll be outnumbered during your SAVANNAH yacht charter, with a crew of 24 on board.

When you’re ready to get on the water, there’s a variety of toys to choose from. Plunge into the blue with the diving board or giant slide, race around on the range of personal watercraft, and get the adrenaline up with the inflatable towables.

Sports fans will enjoy the basketball court on this luxury superyacht, which also has a golf driving range and other sports goods like footballs, frisbees, volleyball nets, and more.

You can take the adventure below the surface with extensive snorkeling equipment and scuba diving gear. And if you want to head back to shore, you can chuck the Roubaix bikes into one of the two tenders and zip across.

  • Underwater observation lounge
  • Spectacular and expansive interior
  • Gym, spa and Hammam
  • Exceptional swimming pool

Savannah won world superyacht award Motor Yacht of the Year 2016

84m Feadship superyacht Savannah for sale for the first time

The 83.5-metre Feadship motor yacht Savannah has joined the market for the first time with Robert Shepherd of Edmiston ahead of her appearance at the Monaco Yacht Show .

Built in the Netherlands by Feadship in 2015, the multi-award-winning steel and aluminium superyacht was designed and engineered by Feadship and De Voogt Naval Architects with living spaces designed by CG Design – one of only two yachting projects undertaken by the French studio.

Winner of the coveted Motor Yacht of the Year award at the World Superyacht Awards in 2015, Savannah is a truly innovative hybrid vessel with an exceptionally clean "electro-mechanic" propulsion package, claimed to provide fuel savings of 30 per cent compared to conventional yachts in her class.

As well as being one of the most sought-after charter yachts on the market, Savannah has been consistently maintained since new – with a full repaint in her statement "Sea Foam metallic green" took place during a major refit in 2020 that cost upwards of €9,000,000 alongside other numerous upgrades. Walls of glass wrap around her decks and Cristina Gherardi Bernadeau and Marcello Bozzarelli of CG Design rewrote the rule book when it came to her interiors, introducing curved bulkheads to replace the usual straight ones. Dark rosewood floors, silk curtains, polished columns and metallic finishes throughout create an opulent ambience.

Savannah accommodates 12 guests across six cabins, with a VIP, two doubles and two convertible cabins making up the five guest cabins forward on the main deck. A statement elevator connects all decks and the communal spaces feel absolutely vast with high deckheads. The owner's private deck is described by the broker as, "a showstopper, with a huge skylight above the bed, a dining room, saloon, office, large marble bathroom and dressing area providing an exclusive enclave, while outside there is a private terrace and helipad". There are generous quarters for a crew of 24 in 12 cabins.

Savannah's amenities include a nine-metre swimming pool on the aft deck – cascading onto the swim platform and connecting with the main saloon – a gym, a spa and Hammam, a DJ station and a barbecue on the sundeck. One of her most lauded features is undoubtedly a submerged underwater "Nemo" lounge which allows for spectacular viewings of sealife in anchorages in an amphitheatre-like setting.

The tender inventory includes a 9.5-metre limousine tender and a 9.5-metre sport tender. As well as a full array of water toys, Savannah sports a golf driving range and basketball court.

The 2,305GT yacht for sale contains one 2,414hp Wärtsilä 9L20 4-stroke engine as well as a one-megawatt battery bank. She has a range of 6,500 nautical miles at her cruising speed of 14 knots and a maximum speed of 17 knots.

Savannah will be at anchor during the Monaco Yacht Show with price on application.

Live updates: follow the latest news on Russia-Ukraine

Several luxury yachts owned by wealthy Russians have been detained across Europe this month.

It comes after the West imposed sanctions on oligarchs over Moscow's invasion of Ukraine .

Some have taken evasive action – two such superyachts linked to billionaire Roman Abramovich were spotted approaching the Turkish coast on Tuesday. A group of Ukrainians tried to stop one of the yachts from docking in Turkey.

Chelsea FC owner Mr Abramovich is one of several oligarchs who were added to an EU blacklist last week as governments acted to seize yachts and other luxury assets owned by the billionaires.

Western sanctions resulted in many large vessels relocating from Europe in the past few weeks. Several have headed to places such as the Maldives, which have no extradition treaty with the US.

Where is the Abramovich-owned yacht heading?

Mr Abramovich's yacht Eclipse was seen heading towards Marmaris on Tuesday, according to data compiled by monitoring site Marine Traffic, which was seen by Reuters.

The previous day, his superyacht Solaris was moored in Bodrum, about 80 kilometres from Marmaris, data showed, after skirting waters of EU countries.

There was no suggestion Mr Abramovich was on board either of the yachts.

Which yachts have been detained?

On Monday, a superyacht linked to another Russian billionaire was detained by authorities after docking in Gibraltar.

The Axioma , believed to belong to Dmitrievich Pumpyansky, moored at Gibraltar on the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, Reuters TV footage showed.

Mr Pumpyansky, who is under UK and EU sanctions, owns Russia's largest steel pipe maker TMK. Data shows the 72-metre vessel is owned by a British Virgin Islands holding company called Pyrene investments, Reuters reported. An article published as part of the Panama Papers leaks names Mr Pumpyansky as a beneficiary of the holding.

On March 12, the world's biggest sailing yacht, called Sailing Yacht A and owned by Russian billionaire Andrey Igorevich Melnichenko , was seized by Italian police.

Several other luxury yachts have also been detained across Europe, including in Gibraltar, Mallorca in Spain's Balearic Islands and the French coast.

Here are 16 superyachts linked to wealthy Russians

1. Eclipse , a superyacht linked to sanctioned Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich , was this week spotted heading in the direction of Marmaris in Turkey.

2. Solaris , belonging to Mr Abramovich , moored in Bodrum at the start of the week.

3. The Axioma superyacht, belonging to Russian oligarch Dmitrievich Pumpyansky , who is on the EU's list of sanctioned Russians, was detained by authorities after docking in Gibraltar on Monday.

4. The Crescent , which was seized by the Spanish government in Tarragona, Spain, on March 17. The ship's owner is not publicly known, although it is believed to belong to Russian Igor Sechin, head of Rosneft Oil in Moscow.

5. Ragnar , owned by former KGB officer and Russian oligarch Vladimir Strzhalkovsky, who is not on the EU sanctions list.

6. Tango , owned by Russian billionaire Viktor Vekselberg, who was sanctioned by the US on March 11.

7. Lady Anastasia , owned by Russian arms manufacturer Alexander Mijeev, is retained at Port Adriano, Mallorca, as a result of sanctions against Russia and Belarus issued by the European Union.

8. Valerie was seized by the Spanish government in Barcelona, Spain, on March 15. Spanish newspaper El Pais reported that the ship is linked to Rostec State Corporation’s chief executive Sergey Chemezov.

9. The $578 million Sailing Yacht A owned by Russian billionaire Andrey Igorevich Melnichenko was seized by Italian police in the port of Trieste on March 12.

10. The 156-metre Dilbar superyacht is owned by Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov.

11. La Datcha belongs to Russian billionaire businessman Oleg Tinkov.

12. Lady M , owned by Russian oligarch Alexei Mordashov, was seized by Italian police on March 5.

13. Amore Vero was seized in the Mediterranean resort of La Ciotat on March 3 by French authorities. The yacht is linked to Igor Sechin, a Putin ally who runs the Russian oil giant Rosneft.

14. Quantum Blue , owned by a company linked to Russian billionaire Sergei Galitsky, the head of Russian oil giant Rosneft, was seized in southern France on March 3.

15. Superyacht Luna is owned by Russian billionaire Farkhad Akhmedov.

16. Triple Seven is owned by Russian billionaire Alexander Abramov, according to media reports. The yacht was last up for sale in 2020 for €38 million ($41.85 million).

Memorial Day Boating Safety Advice: Pay attention, limit alcohol and wear life jacket

B oating safety experts are issuing a list of recommendations for Chatham County residents to stay safe ahead of Memorial Day weekend, when more people are traveling on the waterways.

The safety recommendations, issued by Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the Georgia River Network , prioritize paying attention , limiting alcohol consumption and wearing a lifejacket .

The safety recommendations resonate two years after three boating accidents occurred between May and June 2022.

On May 5, 2022, local businessman Joe Moore was killed when a boat he was aboard struck an unlit channel marker near the Savannah Yacht Club and he was hit in the head by an unknown object. On May 28, five people - four family members - died in a boat collision on the Wilmington River . And on June 5, 2022, two people were injured on Sunday when a small powerboat traveling in Turners Creek struck the wooden fenders beneath the U.S. 80 bridge. The teen involved in the crash was later charged with boating under the influence (BUI).

More: With boating accidents rising, here are three agencies tasked with watching Chatham waterways

Georgia DNR Boating Safety 101: Pay Attention

DNR Game Warden Quintin Reed offers a simple recommendation for boaters on the waterway during Memorial Day: Pay attention.

“Watch everything going on around you,” Reed said in a phone call. “Be aware of your surroundings.”

DNR is one of three agencies tasked with responding in the case of boating accidents, along with the Chatham County Marine Patrol and the U.S. Coast Guard. If it’s a boating incident accruing more than $2,000 in property damages or involves serious injuries or fatalities, Georgia DNR would be the primary agency, according to previous Savannah Morning News reporting .

Reed also said “be aware of your state of mind,” noting that there “tends to be alcohol on boats,” especially during Memorial Day weekend.

“I want everybody to have a good time, but I want everyone to be safe,” said Reed. “Don’t get intoxicated when you’re driving the vessel. Just make sure you’re aware of how you are.”

Since the multiple boating accidents two summers ago, Reed said DNR has a “heightened sense of patrolling” during holidays, including a greater number of employees available and working longer shifts.

“That's the best way we can do it is to just get out there and make sure that everybody's doing what they’re supposed to be doing,” said Reed.

There hasn't been any boating incidents in Chatham County, thus far, in 2024, though there has been one BUI and one drowning, according to an email sent by DNR Public Affairs Officer Mark McKinnon. In 2023, there were seven boating incidents, four BUIs and one drowning in Chatham County. In 2022, there were four boating incidents, five BUIs and two drownings, and in 2021, there were five boating incidents, six BUIs and three drownings in Chatham County.

There will be 5 DNR game wardens patrolling Chatham County waterways throughout the Memorial Day weekend, according to McKinnon.

U.S. Coast Guard: Always have life-saving equipment onboard

U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer First Class Ryan Dickinson issued a statement via email:

"Coast Guard Station Tybee Island is gearing up for a proactive presence on the water this holiday weekend, dedicated to upholding safety for all boaters. Collaborating closely with our local, state, and federal maritime counterparts, Station Tybee Island's boat crews stand poised to aid anyone facing distress. We urge the public to maintain vigilance on the water and to always ensure they have essential life-saving equipment before leaving the pier."

Dickinson added in a separate email that "the number of Coast Guard members ready to assist mariners in distress well exceeds 100 between the various Coast Guard units that respond to the Chatham County area from Coast Guard Sector Charleston, Coast Guard Air Station Savannah, various Coast Guard Cutters and Station Tybee Island."

Chatham County Marine Patrol to focus on boating safety compliance

Betsy Nolen, Chatham County Police Department (CCPD) Public Information Officer, wrote in an email that CCPD Marine Patrol will also be fully staffed during Memorial Day weekend.

Nolen recommended that boaters check that their boats are in good working order and have working lights before heading out on the water. Nolen also added that people should have a float plan that they share with others and to wear life vests.

"Our focus is always on safety, and this weekend will be no exception," Nolen wrote in the email. "We will be proactively patrolling, conducting safety checks, and responding to any emergencies – the same tasks we do every day of the year. Our safety checks are very much designed to bring people into compliance as quickly as possible, so they can boat safely. In fact, 90 percent of the citations Marine Patrol writes are warnings. Marine Patrol is very focused on educating, instead of punishing, whenever possible."

Safety advice for paddlers

Andrea White, community programs coordinator for the Georgia River Network , said she always encourages paddlers to wear their lifejackets, no matter their swimming ability or how harmless the water conditions appear to be. She also encourages paddlers to not paddle alone, if possible.

The Georgia River Network is a Georgia river advocacy organization that organizes paddle trips and promotes water trails. On May 18, during National Safe Boating Week, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Allatoona Lake and the US Coast Guard Auxiliary, along with the Georgia chapter of the American Canoe Association (ACA Georgia) offered Kayaking 101 classes to students led by nationally certified ACA instructor volunteers in multiple Georgia cities, including Savannah, Eatonton, Acworth and White, according to a press release.

In Chatham County, White said, “You’re mostly dealing with tidal waters, oyster beds and hazardous conditions caused by wind.

“Remember to act as though something in your plan for your day is going to go wrong,” said White.

‘Sadness’ still lingers from Memorial Day 2022 boat crash in Savannah

SAVANNAH ― The messages came fast and furious to Doug Pesce’s mobile phone around midday on May 28, 2022.

Word of a horrific boat crash on the Wilmington River had spread that Memorial Day weekend morning, and rumor had it a Calvary Day schoolteacher piloting a boat out of the Savannah Boathouse marina was involved. Pesce met that description, and friends knew he’d planned to hit the water that day.

“Calvary students work the docks” at the marina, Pesce said, “so the news spread quickly. Friends called to check, thinking it could be me.”

Instead, it was one of Pesce’s colleagues and close friends, Chris Leffler, piloting the boat. Leffler, his wife Lori, sons Nate and Zach, daughter Katie and one of Katie’s friends were aboard the vessel when it collided with another craft near a hairpin bend of the river that winds between the Savannah River and the Atlantic Ocean.

Four members of the Leffler family died in the accident, as did a passenger on the other boat, Robert “Stephen” Chauncey. Katie Leffler and her unidentified friend survived, as did the driver of the other vessel, Mark Stegall.

Law enforcement investigators determined Stegall at fault in the collision. Their report alleges he was driving “recklessly” on the wrong side of the busy waterway and had consumed alcohol that morning. A Chatham County grand jury indicted Stegall on 16 counts , including 10 counts of homicide by vessel, in August 2022 and he entered a not guilty plea at an arraignment hearing a year later.

Yet as the two-year anniversary of the boat crash nears, a trial date has not been scheduled. A motion hearing slated for May 21 was postponed until November at the request of the defense, which is challenging the admissibility of blood alcohol-related evidence in the case.

Stegall has been free on a $75,000 bond since September 2022.

In a telephone interview on Tuesday, Chatham District Attorney Shalena Cook-Jones said her prosecutors are prepared to try the case. The court clerk and the judges, not her office, handle scheduling, she said. She pointed to a yearslong case backlog, one made even longer by a 13-month-long jury trial suspension during COVID-19 pandemic, for the slow pace.

Reached for comment, one of Stegall’s attorneys, Tom Withers, confirmed that the defense is the source of the current delay but said the prolonged pre-trial period is not unusual in a case such as Stegall’s.

The wait still frustrates Pesce and other close friends of the Leffler family. Stacy Volz, who tutored the Leffler boys when they were younger, calls the case an “open wound.” Michelle Procopio, another Calvary teacher, talks of “finding justice” for Katie Leffler, who is now in grad school and has asked for privacy in regards to her loss.

“There’s just this lingering sense of sadness,” Volz said. “The wheels of justice do move slowly. Painfully slow.”

Unforgettable influences

The Lefflers relocated to Savannah just months before the accident. They moved to the Georgia coast from Alpharetta, where Chris had taught at King’s Ridge Christian School .

Teaching was Chris Leffler’s second career; he’d worked as a financial adviser before finding “his calling,” Pesce said.

“He just had a true genuine passion and desire to help kids grow,” Pesce said. “The great students he pushed to achieve more. The kids who struggled, he pushed them to grow and supported them along the way. He saw them as individuals and did everything to meet their needs.”

Lori was an executive with a consumer products company. Zach was a 23-year-old working as a data analyst in Atlanta and Nate was a junior at Calvary at the time of their deaths.

The other person killed in the boat crash, Chauncey, was a U.S. Army veteran. He served his country for 16 years before retiring and is survived by a young daughter.

Despite being relatively new Savannah residents, the Lefflers had built strong local bonds. The accident devastated the Calvary school community. Calvary’s 2023 class yearbook is dedicated to the memory of Nate and his father.

They were one of four families to follow Calvary head of school Hunter Chadwick from King’s Ridge to the Savannah K-12. Chadwick worked seven years as an administrator in the Alpharetta school before being hired at Calvary in 2020.

The draw of the coast and the chance to be a part of building on the success of Calvary, a popular parochial school affiliated with a large Baptist church, led to a steady, southerly trickle of King’s Ridge staffers.

“We are often asked if all of us moving here was planned; it was not,” Volz said. “We were all about the same age and at a similar point in our lives and felt personally called here to be a part of the energy and excitement of it.”

The former Alpharetta residents were close-knit, often getting together for group dinners. All spoke of the Leffler family with admiration, citing their kindness and love for one another as examples to follow. Chris coached their children on the baseball and football fields. Zach and Nate babysat those same kids. Lori was quick to help others, including friends of friends she didn’t know, in their professional pursuits.

According to Volz, Chris’ influence is best summed up in notes he created documenting realizations of things seen on Earth that he considered glimpses into heaven. His “pockets of heaven” might describe a dazzling sunset or a struggling student who’d finally come to understand something.

“The impression he made is hard for me to do justice to,” Procopio said. “Follow your heart and follow the Lord and He will come to you. That’s how he lived.”

Safety on the water

The Memorial Day weekend 2022 crash was one of three high-profile boating accidents in the Savannah area in a one-month span. One of the others left local businessman Joseph Moore dead when the vessel he was aboard struck a channel marker in the Intracoastal Waterway near the Savannah Yacht Club. The other incident involved two teens , both of who survived.

The rash of collisions put a spotlight on boater safety and education. According to data from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, the crashes accounted for six of the seven boating-related deaths in Chatham County in 2022, and there hasn’t been a fatality since. There have been seven boating incidents since the start of 2023 but only two injuries.

Mark McKinnon with the Georgia DNR cautioned against reading much into trends, referencing the many factors that affect boating statistics. He cited weather conditions and what days of the week holidays such as July 4 fall on. Rain and midweek holidays drive numbers down.

“We will continue to patrol, educate on and enforce the laws, and also keep hammering home the messages of life jacket wear, not boating while impaired, and obeying the ‘rules of the road,’” he wrote in an email.

For Leffler’s pal Pesce, whom friends initially feared was involved in the fatal collision two years ago, boating remains a favorite downtime pursuit. But he admits to thinking about the Lefflers on every trip and said his wife remains uneasy about being on the water. She refused to go out for a year after the accident.

“We were supposed to meet them out there that afternoon on the water,” Pesce said. “Every time I get on board that boat I can’t help but think about it.”

Killer whales attack and sink sailing yacht in the Strait of Gibraltar — again

By Emily Mae Czachor

Updated on: May 14, 2024 / 4:54 PM EDT / CBS News

A sailing yacht sunk in the Strait of Gibraltar on Sunday after an unknown number of orcas  slammed into the vessel with two people on board and caused a water leak, officials said. Both crew members were rescued by a passing oil tanker, said Spain's maritime rescue service, marking the latest killer whale attack on a boat in what has become a pattern in recent years.

The incident happened at around 9 a.m. local time in the narrow strait between Spain and Morocco that has become a notorious site of human interactions with pods of killer whales that, for reasons still not fully understood, ram into boats and at times even sink them . In this case, crew members on board the SV Alboran Cognac yacht put out an emergency call for an evacuation after they encountered orcas roughly 14 miles off the coast of Cape Spartel.

The crew members reported feeling blows to the hull of the vessel and rudder, which was damaged by the whales, the rescue service said. The agency's coordination center in Tarifa, on the Spanish side of the Strait of Gibraltar, helped arrange for their evacuation via the tanker MT Lascaux. The tanker was able to collect the crew members from the sinking yacht within the hour, and they disembarked in Gibraltar before 10:30 a.m. They abandoned the SV Alboran Cognac, which proceeded to completely disappear into the ocean.

Anyone sailing through waters from the Gulf of Cádiz in southern Spain and the Strait of Gibraltar, either in a larger motorized vessel or a personal sailing boat, is advised to avoid certain areas that the maritime rescue service marks as potentially dangerous spots for orca interactions. The greatest threats exist between May and August, when officials say that pods of killer whales are most commonly seen in those parts of the Atlantic.

orca-interactions-maritime-rescue.jpg

But previously recorded incidents suggest those dangers may be present at any time. Last October, a Polish boat touring company reported that a pod of orcas had managed to sink one of its yachts after repeatedly slamming into the steering fin for 45 minutes, causing it to leak. Last June, two sailing teams competing in an international race around the world reported frightening scenarios in which multiple orcas rammed into or pushed up against their boats or as they sailed west of Gibraltar.

No one on board any of the vessels was hurt in those encounters, but the documented rise in confrontational behavior has researchers and sailors trying to determine why orcase have attempted to sink or capsize so many boats off the coasts of Spain and Portugal.

Some sailors have even resorted to blasting thrash metal music in a bid to deter the apex predators.

Reports of orcas interacting with humans have more than tripled in the last two years or so, according to the research group GTOA, which has documented hundreds of such incidents in the region since 2020. But some of the latest data points to possible changes in the orcas' etiquette, with the group reporting only 26 interactions in the Strait of Gibraltar and Bay of Biscay areas between January and May of this year. That number is 65% lower than the number of interactions recorded in the region over the same months last year, and 40% lower than the average number of interactions recorded in the same months between 2021 and 2023, according to GTOA.
