ALL THE SPACE IS INSIDE!

Biggest 38’ family cruiser in the world.

The Selene 38 Voyager Aft-cabin is based on the successful Archer design with several technical improvements like  Diamond Sea Glaze sliding doors, optional Seakeeper gyro stabilization, Li-Ion batteries, a new electricity management system, a sea-chest for easier maintenance, an optional water maker with high-voltage auto-clean system, etc… A happy and classy gentleman’s yacht which has been cruising in British Columbia, the Bahamas, the Greek islands and South-East Asia for decades already. This beautiful and charming pocket yacht has always been incredibly popular because of its unique layout which guarantees privacy to four people or two couples. Because of its moderate size it can be hauled-out by the smallest Travelift and accommodated in almost any marina anywhere in the world. Thanks to its classic lines designed by Howard Chen and the legendary marine architect Ted Hood, winner of the 1972 America’s Cup, the Selene 38 Aft-cabin model is, and will remain, one of Howard Chen’s favorite yachts. When creating this yacht the designers adopted the unique concept of the “Whale Back” hull, that was a trademark of Ted Hood’s designs. This is why the aft cabin concept has so much headroom and space in the engine room. It probably has the best engine room layout for its size anywhere.

BEST ENGINE ROOM IN ITS CLASS

While the Selene 38 Voyager Aft-cabin is a legendary yacht, she doesn’t compromise on modern technology and first class components, like the recent addition of Diamond Sea Glaze doors, improved sound-proofing, optional air-conditioning, generator and larger aluminum fuel tanks for extensive cruising. Howard says that the best-selling yachts of all time were the Grand Banks 36-42, but when their production ended for a while Howard decided he wanted to bring a high quality compact trawler back to the market. He wanted to build an elegant yacht with traditional timber joinery, leather upholstery, teak & holly floors, a spacious interior with two cabins and two heads, a cozy salon, a practical galley and safe decks. The Selene 38 Voyager Aft-cabin is an excellent family cruiser, or the perfect Looper’s yacht. A tender finds its natural spot on top of the aft cabin where it can be loaded by a mast and boom.

Many Selene 38 Voyager Aft-cabin make use of the mast for a steadying sail which gives the boat a classy « heritage yacht » style as well as a simple and maintenance-free stabilization system. And all this, including a flybridge with an outdoor deck salon, comes at an affordable price! As the entry level model of the trawlers range, the Selene 38 Voyager Aft-cabin is still a best-seller. We call it our “small super-yacht”, all the space is inside…

The World of Motor Yachts: Luxury, Performance, and Freedom

Motor yachts offer a unique combination of power, comfort, and freedom on the water. Designed primarily for pleasure cruising or racing, these impressive vessels put the world at your fingertips.

A Spectrum of Sizes: Finding Your Perfect Motor Yacht

Motor yachts come in different sizes, catering to every desire. From compact and maneuverable models around 33 feet (10 meters) to sprawling luxury palaces exceeding 131 feet (40 meters), there’s a perfect fit for every dream.

Pricing Considerations:

  • Smaller motor yachts (33ft – 50ft) typically range from $500,000 to $3 million.
  • Mid-size yachts (50ft – 80ft) can fall between $3 million and $15 million.
  • Superyachts (over 80ft) enter a whole new pricing category, reaching into the hundreds of millions and beyond, depending on size, customization, and features.

Power and Maneuverability: Taking Control on the Water

Motor yachts usually have two or more motors. This has several advantages:

  • Better Maneuverability: Two engines allow captains to better deal with challenging weather conditions. Thanks to vessel control software systems, it also provides some advantages when docking.
  • Fuel Efficiency and Range: With dual engines and customized fuel tanks, extended cruises at constant speeds with lower fuel consumption are possible. This is where the explorer yacht, designed to roam, even cross the Atlantic, thrives.
  • Shallow Water Access: Unlike deep-keel sailboats, motor yachts have a shallower draft, allowing them to explore beautiful coves and hidden bays inaccessible to other vessels.

The Flybridge Advantage: Elevated Yachting Experience

Many motor yachts, particularly larger models, will also have a flybridge. This offers captains better visibility for navigation, docking, and it provides passengers with higher vistas. Flybridge boats, like the smaller Merry Fisher , have that additional social space, featuring seating areas, wet bars, and sundecks.

Beyond Ownership: Exploring the Charter Option

Chartering offers a fantastic alternative for those seeking a taste of the motor yacht lifestyle without the full commitment of ownership. Chartering allows owners to offset some of the cost of their boats.

In 2020, an estimated 15,000 yachts were exceeding 79 feet available for charter worldwide.

Charter yachts often involve annual maintenance costs of around 15% of the yacht’s value. For vessels valued over $3 million, that’s almost a half million a year!

Our boating editors recently checked out the Miami boat show to understand this decadent market. We found many owners who don’t even get to use their yachts as much as they’d like, so the chartering world makes sense for everyone.

Entering the Realm of Superyachts: Luxury Redefined

The “Commercial Yacht Code” categorizes motor yachts exceeding 79 feet (24 meters) as superyachts and those surpassing 131 feet (40 meters) as mega-yachts. These behemoths represent the pinnacle of luxury yachting, with meticulously crafted interiors, advanced technological marvels, and crew quarters to cater to the owner’s every need. Naturally, these vessels come with exceptionally high construction standards and price tags.

Buying a Motor Yacht

Once you have made a decision to purchase a motor yacht, the next step is to determine exactly what make of motor yacht will best fit your requirements. There are so many different motor yachts, give yourself time to find the right one and ask yourself this.

  • Budget capacity?
  • New or used?
  • What type of user experience do you want out of the vessel?
  • What hull size of motor yacht is best?

Once you have created a shortlist, you can then refine your search. Take time out to go and view in person. Book yourself an experience aboard and head over to your closest marina and speak to owners. Consider these points before purchasing a motor yacht.

  • Pre-book buyer’s sea trials for your shortlist
  • Select the perfect motor yacht
  • Used – get a certified hull survey, safety comes first
  • Get annual insurance quotes
  • Calculate dockage – purchase or rent a slip or dock
  • Calculate monthly upkeep and maintenance
  • Calculate extra costs like navigational devices & fittings
  • Draft your own checklist
  • Draft & sign off sale & purchase contracts
  • Draft & sign off a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA)
  • Ensure satisfied 100%
  • Execute payment and take transfer of ownership
  • Register and insure the motor yacht

Frequently Asked Questions About Motor Yachts

These 5 questions give you some clarity on what to consider when purchasing a motor yacht.

  • How many guests and crew (combined) are you comfortable with aboard? Privately registered motor yachts can carry no more than 12 passengers, so often this will define the length of the vessel.
  • Then consider functionality and lifestyle. Decide upfront what you want out of the motor yacht, are you planning to use it for charter, private cruising, sport, remote office, family vacations or entertainment or all of the above?
  • Do you plan to use it on inland water systems or oceans or both?
  • Do you want to captain and skipper yourself or would you prefer a crew, so you have time to enjoy the experience?  Set a limit to your budget both in terms of purchase and then beyond that one has to consider the long term upkeep, storage, and monthly maintenance costs
  • What is the best length for a Motor Yacht?

If you plan on becoming your own captain, the best hull size on average for a single-handed skipper would be between 32ft to 42ft.

The best motor yacht length is defined by both the objective and purpose of the vessel. Added to this one should consider both the budget and upkeep costs, including dockage fees, as these are most often calculated at a per foot rate. The next factor would be to select a good for the number of passengers you wish to have aboard (family, guests, crew), as the number of sleeping berths are limited on smaller hull sizes. As you increase your hull size, you need to consider that this will then add an extra headcount because you have to factor in additional space for crew.

They say the old golden unwritten nautical rule is that boat length is always defined by a person’s age. Whatever your age, double it, and that gives you a perfect hull length in feet (for example, if you are 40 years of age you should consider an 80ft hull length).

They can cost anywhere between $100,000- $10,000,000. The sky’s the absolute limit when it comes to what you can spend on a motor yacht. Used or new, the cost is often defined by the design, size and year of manufacture. Quality motor yachts are built to last and most often retain market related value if they are properly maintained and have an accident free history.

Motor yachts are generally between 33ft – 79 feet, super yachts are generally over 79 feet in hull length, and mega yachts are over 100 feet.

If you purchase a globally recognized brand, it makes selling the boat in the future much easier. The established global motor yacht brands offer a range of existing designs that can be customized to suit any individual requirement. These approved motor yacht designs are often updated with the latest technology and modifications over the years. A tip is that reputable international brands retain market value over the years so are considered a valuable investment.

There is never one best hull type for a motor yacht, there is rather a series or collection of yachts or vessels that are released and they often use the exact same hull design for different lengths in a series. There is a huge selection and variation of hull designs, and this is exactly what defines a yacht. Motor boat hulls are specifically designed to cut through water with the least possible resistance while remaining balanced in all types of weather and water conditions. Each year hull designs improve and often a new hull release is about using the latest carbon fiber molding techniques for structural strength, rather than a modification to the actual shape of the design.

Super yachts are power driven water vessels specially designed by yacht engineers and shipbuilders and are normally 71 – 99 feet in length. Super yachts that exceed 100ft in length are classified as mega yachts.

2020 Cruisers Yachts 38 GLS

  • By Chris Caswell
  • Updated: March 3, 2020

Cruisers Yachts 38 GLS running shot

In case you haven’t realized, boats are like ice cream. You have to choose your flavor. Some are plain vanilla, some are chocolate, but Cruisers’ new 38 GLS is like the Neapolitan you remember as a kid. It blends the best of all flavors, and it satisfies, no matter what you are craving.

Want to go fast? Think 53 mph. Want to spend the night aboard? There’s a galley, shower and private stateroom. Want wind in your hair? Plant yourself in the bow seating for the ride of a lifetime. Want to just hang out at the local sandbar, splashing in and out of the water? Fold down the beach door that defines this versatile new water toy.

Interior and Accessories

I have no idea what GLS means. Great little ship? Whatever it stands for, it’s quite an amazing bow rider with outboard power, and also the amenities and craftsmanship found on the larger Cruisers Cantius yachts.

This isn’t Cruisers Yachts first foray into outboard-powered dayboats—that was the 338 OB. The 38 GLS proves a whole different vessel. For one thing, it offers the unforgettable beach door that turns a section of the starboard coaming into a fold-down addition to the cockpit, increasing space exponentially while replacing the transom platform lost to the outboards. It brilliantly delivers a great hangout area that’s popular when you’re at a sandbar or playing with water toys.

Courtesy Cruisers Yachts fold-out beach door

Cruisers took the concept one step further and—because parents want to keep an eye on their kids—the aft-facing bench backrest swivels to face the “beach,” so parents can do just that.

Courtesy Cruisers Yachts fold-out transom decking

That takes care of the aft end of the cockpit, and there are still two L-shaped midship dinettes, both with tables, that can handle a mob for munchies from the mini galley. This is equipped with the good stuff, including a grill, sink, fridge and ice maker, but the interesting fillip is putting two bar stools at the forward end of the galley counter. This surprised me because it occupies space usually given to a forward-facing companion seat, but I found the stools very usable. They add two more people to the cockpit entertainment zone and can be used for supervising the beach, and because they tuck into the corner, I was comfortable while the 38 GLS was running.

Courtesy Cruisers Yachts wet bar

The skipper gets the best seat in the house, of course, behind the blingy chrome-and-leather tilt wheel facing a black nonreflective dash inlaid with two rows of recessed push buttons for various systems. The joystick and throttle-shifter are exactly where you’d want them, and I liked that you look through the windshield when standing, rather than over it (or at the frame). The varnished nonslip footrest is at the perfect angle, and the seat bolster flips up for standing room if desired.

The portside walkway leads forward (with a closure door for wind and spray protection), and the U-shaped bow seating offers streamlined headrests on the forward-facing lounge. A removable table converts to a sun pad, and I liked the up/down buttons for the anchor windlass on the deck so you don’t have to open the rode locker.

Courtesy Cruisers Yachts head and shower

Down below is a surprise to almost rival the beach door: more than 6 feet, 5 inches of headroom. There’s an enclosed head to starboard (6 feet, 2 inches of headroom—wow) with a full shower. The forward settee/dinette is convertible to a berth, but the 38 GLS has a private stateroom tucked under the cockpit with a 6 ½-by-4 ½-foot berth, which is bigger than a double but a couple of inches shy of a queen. That’s more than enough for overnighting and great for secure naps for the kiddies. And a nearby microwave handles morning coffee without leaving the cabin, which is thoughtfully provided with a screen door to eliminate no-see-ums.

Courtesy Cruisers Yachts cabin

Underway, the 38 GLS is fun, with plenty of punch from the standard triple Mercury Verado 300 hp outboards (350 hp Verados are optional), and we easily reached just shy of 53 mph with several people aboard and full fuel. These Mercs give you joystick maneuvering for docking, and they aren’t going to melt your credit card for fuel either.

No big surprises, but the seaworthy hull has two strakes on each side and chine flats to improve stability and throw spray aside. We did doughnuts on Tampa Bay, crossing our wake from every angle, and the 38 GLS maintained perfect poise throughout. The triple Mercs have plenty of punch if you want to yank all manner of water toys, reaching planing speed (25.3 mph) in just 5.5 seconds and flat-out in just 21 seconds.

Courtesy Cruisers Yachts sunshade

An option is a 5.5 kW genset to power the air conditioning at anchor and/or the blender for piña coladas at the sandbar. I was surprised that a built-in vacuum is standard, but it makes sense to deal with sandy feet.

If you’re shopping around, take a look at the Sea Ray SLX400 ($708,552). It’s 3 feet longer, but has a similar layout in both the cockpit and cabin, with a beach door.

Learn More About the Triple Mercury Outboards Powering This Boat

A sterndrive version of the 38 GLS is coming, mostly to satisfy hardcore out-drivers or freshwater skippers, and I wondered what was under the big compartment aft on the outboard version. Turns out, the entire seating package rises on gas lifts, revealing a cavernous storage area (or perhaps a mother-in-law suite).

The Cruisers 38 GLS is genuinely likable. Whether you prefer chocolate, vanilla or strawberry, this is one tasty treat.

14 Great Pocket Cruisers in 2023

  • By Victor Tan
  • Updated: July 20, 2023

Pocket cruisers and mini yachts are generally vessels under 50 feet in length overall, and can include express cruiser designs, flybridge yachts as well as either monohull or catamaran hull forms. They are cruising boats easily handled by a small, or even shorthanded, crew. Pocket cruisers generally have wave-taming hull designs and have the ability to take on sporty seas, offer comfortable accommodations belowdecks with one or two staterooms for extended voyages, “homelike amenities,” and the ability to cruise as slowly or as quickly as an owner desires with inboard- and outboard-power options. These pocket-cruising boats have the range for longer voyages , can pull up in skinny water at the sandbar thanks to shallow drafts, and head over the horizon where cruising adventure awaits. Pocket cruisers are true multitasking yachts. When it comes to family and couples cruising, it’s hard to beat a well-built and well-equipped and pocket cruiser.

Best Cruising Boats Under 50-Feet

The following 14 pocket cruisers and mini yachts are all vessels we’ve seen, been aboard, and tested. They are listed in no particular order.

  • Hood 35 LM: high-tech, family-friendly pocket cruiser
  • Galeon Yachts 375 GTO: mid-size boat with plenty of below-deck space
  • Aquila 42: sleek power catamaran ready to entertain
  • Azimut Verve 42 : small, yet mighty yacht ready for open water
  • Hinckley Yachts 35: luxury picnic cruiser with range
  • Beneteau Gran Turismo 45: sleek cruising yacht with all the amenities
  • Solaris Power 48 Open: eye-catching power yacht with 360-degree views
  • Cruisers Yachts 42 GLS: luxury cruiser yacht with powerful outboard options
  • Back Cove 34O: modern outboard power combined with classic Downeast styling
  • Picnic Boat 40: speedy and fuel-efficient vessel with great looks
  • Aquila 36: comfortably seat up to 20 guests for fun on the salt
  • Boston Whaler 350 Realm: multitasker built for fishing and entertaining
  • MJM 35z: sporty, aesthetically pleasing, cruising-conscious features and elegant lines
  • Greenline 39: sturdy-looking lines and environmentally-friendly power

When Android co-founder, Rich Miner, wanted a new family-friendly pocket cruiser , he turned to a custom-penned C.W. Hood design and a Lyman-Morse-built 35-footer, which has a timeless Down East profile matched to seriously modern technology under the hood.

This yacht looks like a traditional, cold-molded Down East dayboat, but actually, it has everything, from Hamilton HJX Series water-jet drives to a planned Sea Machines autonomous command-and-control system . Top speed: 40-plus knots.

Galeon Yachts 375 GTO

Even the remnants of Hurricane Ian, couldn’t dissuade the Galeon Yacht 375 GTO from its cruising mission. The small yacht’s wave-splitting hull form is paired to torque-filled 600 hp Mercury Verado outboards , giving this fun-in-the-sun boat a 47-knot top hop.

The 375 GTO is a speedster, to be sure, but it’s also so much more. Just about every aspect of the main deck seating is transformable and multifunction, from the aft seating to the alfresco dining abaft the helm, and beyond. It also has a family-size and eminently cruise-worthy belowdecks space for four guests, all while providing a foredeck entertaining lounge too.

The Galeon Yachts 375 GTO ticks all the boxes for an easy-to-handle and sporty cruiser.

Aquila 42 Yacht Power Catamaran

Following the success of its 44-, 54- and 70-foot power catamaran models, Aquila has launched the stable-as-a-table, owner-operator-ready Aquila 42 Yacht Power Catamaran .

The Aquila 42 is the entry point into the builder’s yacht line and is noteworthy for its ability to accommodate anywhere from a two- to four-stateroom layout, depending on the owner’s cruising requirements. There are alfresco spaces to manage the sunset cruise with friends and family, including a foredeck lounge area that can be accessed via centerline steps from the flybridge. The Aquila 42 is available with several Volvo Penta diesel-engine options .

Azimut Verve 42

Want to cruise from Florida to Bimini in about an hour? The Azimut Yachts Verve 42 can do that thanks, in part, to triple 450 hp Mercury Racing outboards and a hull designed to dice-and-slice a seaway. Top hop: 45 knots. The Verve 42 also has style for miles with a fine entry, raked hardtop, and a razorlike sheerline accented by sweeping hull glass from bow to stern. It’s striking.

With accommodation for a family of four, the Verve 42 is also solid under the hull tokeep everyone safe on those passages. The Verve 42’s hull is built of fiberglass and uses vinylester resins for blister protection. The yacht’s deck and hardtop are comprised of carbon fiber for strength without added weight. This all means that the Azimut Verve 42 is built to CE Classification Type A , making it suitable for sea voyages where winds can exceed 45 mph and seas to 13 feet.

Hinckley Yachts 35

The Hinckley Yachts 35 takes everything that yachtsmen like about this pedigreed-brand’s classic profile and infuses today’s modern outboard power to create 40 knots of sheer fun wrapped in sheer luxury.

This 35-foot Hinckley is built on a Michael-Peters-penned hull form with a fine entry, wider-than-average chines and a moderate deadrise. While the boat is built to sprint when desired, it’s also a relatively economical cruiser. For instance, a comfortable 24-knot cruise the Hinckley Yachts 35 has a 276-nautical-mile range.

It also has a tech-build thanks to vacuum-infused carbon-fiber composites and epoxy resin. An integrated interior structure is infused with the hull adding rigidity. The hull is then post-cured in an 80-foot oven, further strengthening the structure.

Beneteau Gran Turismo 45

The Beneteau Gran Turismo is the flagship of the builder’s four-model GT series, which also includes 32-, 36- and 41-foot models.

The Gran Turismo 45 ’s cruise-centric layout includes two staterooms and two heads belowdecks, as well as a galley down. There is also a dinette for meals and a settee for rainy-day lounging. Entertaining guests and enjoying the sun is the primary mission of the main deck.

Solaris Power 48 Open

The Solaris Power 48 Open was the first powerboat from this longtime builder known for its sailing yachts, ranging from 40 to 110 feet length overall. The Solaris Power 48 Open is notable for its wave-slicing plumb-bow design, high freeboard forward and 32-knot-plus speed. Power is twin 480 hp Volvo Penta IPS650 diesels.

The high freeboard keeps the deck dry and help creates sizable volume belowdecks with an average 6-foot-6-inch headroom. This enables real estate for either one or two staterooms. With the single-stateroom setup, there is a forepeak master stateroom while an L-shaped settee converts to sleeping accommodations for family or occasional guests. Interior wood options are oak or walnut.

Cruisers Yachts 42 GLS

Outboard-power cruising aficionados will appreciate the triple-engine options for the Cruisers Yachts 42 GLS . The 42 GLS we got aboard had the triple 400 hp Mercury Verados , which produced a top hop of 45 knots, but triple 450 hp Verados are available. Triple 350 hp Mercury Verados are the standard engine option. No matter the power arrangement, this express cruiser can easily be used for wakeboarding and tube towing. The 42 GLS is designed to handle the rough stuff too, with a fine entry and 21-degree transom deadrise.

For cruising enthusiasts, the 42 GLS has a master stateroom with an athwartships and a nearly queen-size berth, and the lower salon’s U-shaped dinette converts to a queen-size berth for the kids.

Back Cove 34O

Combining modern outboard power with classic Downeast styling, the Back Cove 34O touts award-winning standards with cruising in mind. The 34O is equipped with twin 300 hp Yamaha outboards, engines that allow the Newport International Boat Show’s 2018 Best Powerboat Under 35 Feet winner to travel up to 214 nautical miles at 24 knots on a 250-gallon fuel tank.

Belowdecks, the 34O has an island double berth and a split-head arrangement with the toilet to port and a separate shower stall to starboard. On the main deck, a U-shape dinette to port accommodates four or more guests on the Back Cove Yachts vessel. The 34O’s galley is equipped with a Cuisinart microwave, a two-burner Kenyon electric cooktop and a Vitrifrigo fridge and freezer.

Picnic Boat 40

Hinckley Yachts unveiled its first Picnic Boat more than two decades ago. Now, after two previous, sub-40-foot models, the Maine-based boatbuilder has developed its largest and most advanced model to date: the Picnic Boat 40.

Twin 480 hp Cummins diesel engines paired to twin Hamilton 322 jet drives propel the yacht to a 30-knot cruising speed and 34 knots on the pins. With optional twin 550 hp Cummins diesels, cruise and top-end speeds jump to 35 and 38 knots, respectively.

There is an L-shaped settee with a table and a wet bar on the main deck to port. The helm station is forward and to starboard with a benchseat for two. There is also a companion seat across from the helm. Belowdecks, there is 6-foot-2-inch headroom, and the dinette table drops to form a California-king berth for overnights and weekending.

Aquila Power Catamarans started its line with 44- and 48-footers, and now the builder’s Aquila 36 takes the line into the midsize market.

The 36 features a single, main-living area from bow to stern, helped in part by the vessel’s 14-foot, 7-inch beam. The boat can comfortably seat up to 20 guests for fun on the salt. Several Mercury Verado engine options are available for the Aquila 36, including twin 250-, 300- and 350-hp four-strokes. With the 350s, the Aquila has a top-end speed of 37 knots.

Other notable features include a fiberglass hardtop, a dinette, a cooktop, a fridge, a sink and a smokeless grill. Belowdecks, there are two staterooms with nearly queen-size berths, en suite heads and 6-foot-6-inch headroom in each.

Boston Whaler 350 Realm

From fishing and entertaining guests to diving and overnight cruising, Boston Whaler ‘s 350 Realm is a multitasker. And it’s fast, too. It’s powered with either triple 300 hp or triple 350 hp Mercury Verados. The 350 Realm can reach a top speed of 46 knots.

At the helm, two Raymarine displays provide vital navigation data. The captain can take in the displays’ view from a doublewide helm seat. There’s a flip-down platform for standing when needed and a footrest when desired.

There is a V-shaped berth that converts into a double berth with a filler cushion. The separated head has a VacuFlush MSD and a hot-and-cold shower. Owners also have the option to add a microwave and a flat-screen TV.

The MJM 35z can reach a top speed of 44 knots and a cruising speed of 33 knots on its optional 350 hp Mercury Verado outboards; twin 300 hp outboards are standard on this MJM Yachts vessel. Additionally, the 35z can travel up to 304 nautical miles on its 250-gallon fuel tank.

The 35z has a flush-deck layout and to port is space for an electric grill, a baitwell, a sink, an ice maker and a fridge. There are two Stidd helm seats—one for the helmsman and the other for a copilot—that rotate to face the rest of the seating aft. In the cabin is V-shaped seating forward that can be converted to a berth.

Owners also have the option of adding a Seakeeper 3 gyrostabilizer and a full-length Bimini top to shade the cockpit.

Greenline 39

Greenline Yachts ‘ vessels are aptly named for their environmentally friendly means of moving about; the Greenline 39 is no different. The Slovenian yacht manufacturer produces two types of this model: hybrid and solar.

If owners opt for the latter, the 39’s four solar panels atop the salon power all of the vessel’s systems for three hours. With the power of the sun, the 39 can achieve a max speed of 6.5 knots and a cruising speed of 4 knots. The hybrid type uses those same panels to help power a 220 hp Volvo Penta D3 with a Mahle electric-drive system. Owners have the option of replacing the standard engine with a 370 hp Yanmar 8LV diesel.

Belowdecks, scissor berths provide accommodations for long weekends.

As one can expect from Leonardo Yachts no compromises on beauty and elegance were made. The exterior truly captures the style and elegance of a Spirit of Tradition yacht. The 38 foot sailboat has a timeless appeal with elegant classic lines combined with ultra-modern deck hardware and a modern underwater body. The modern classic boat is designed as a true daysailer; the cockpit comfortably seats six people so family or friends can come along to enjoy a day on the water in style. At the same time the Eagle 38 can also easily be sailed single handed .

For ease of handling the jib winches are positioned within easy reach of the helmsman. Optionally the 38 can be equipped with electric powered jib winches. Combined with a powered captive mainsheet winch and electric halyard winch, this will make trimming and hoisting the sails of the 38 foot yacht as easy as pushing a button. The halyard winch is conveniently placed on the coach roof combined with the below deck mounted jib furler system ensuring hoisting or lowering your sails will never be a hassle.

The Eagle 38 is also built for performance. With its sleek design and state-of-the-art technology, this boat is sure to turn heads and provide a smooth and thrilling sailing experience.

The interior is light and airy with plenty of daylight and warm LED lights. The varnished mahogany furniture and ceiling in alcantara give the 38 an elegant and luxurious feel. The interior of the 38 ft sailboat offers sleeping space for three people. To complete the comfort of a daysailer, a toilet is convenient and neatly built in out of sight in the cabin.

The Eagle 38 can be personalized in many ways. Hull color, color of the Permateek deck and caulking, different wood finishes for the interior and by making your personal choice for the interior and exterior cushion fabric, you can design the Eagle 38 to your personal preferences. Furthermore, there are performance upgrades possible as for example different race orientated sails like North Sails 3Di sails and a carbon mast. Please contact  us to explore all the possibilities.

Popular Cruising Yachts from 35 to 40 Feet Long Overall Their Physical Properties & Key Performance Indicators

Welcome to this ever-growing gallery of some of the most popular cruising yachts between 35 and 40 feet (10.7m to 12.2m) long overall.

Cruising Yachts featured on this page...

Medium sized cruising yachts like these are often the sailboat of choice for short-handed crews, and if properly equipped and maintained, will take long offshore voyages in their stride.

Sailboats at the top of this size range, those above 12m long overall, will find that they are charged considerably more in marinas than those that fall just under 12m LOA. Something worth bearing in mind perhaps?

Catalina 275 Sport

catalina 275 sport

“This is a complete package; it’s a good sailing boat and well-thought-out. It’s definitely ready for prime time,” says Boat of the Year judge Ed Sherman. Click here to read why the Catalina 275 Sport won Best Pocket Cruiser in 2014.

Beneteau First 30

beneteau first 30

As they approached the First 30 to conduct their dockside evaluation during the boat show, the BOTY judges may have been just a little skeptical of this performance-oriented 30-footer’s cruisability. But that skepticism turned into appreciation as soon as they stepped below, and they were downright enamored with how the boat sailed. Click here to read why the Beneteau First 30 won Best Small Cruiser, 20 feet and Under in 2011.

presto 30

The Presto 30 is an innovative, well-built, good looking cruising boat that satisfied its stated design brief as well as any other boat the judges looked at, though it’s not what you might expect from an average cruising boat. Cruising World judges also noted that this easy-to-handle boat may attract new sailors to the sport so they can learn the ropes and then trade up to another model, an approach that’s important to the health of the entire industry. Catalina 309

catalina 309

“I think that for the purpose it was put on the water, to be able to walk down, jump aboard, and simply go enjoy it on a weekend, the boat not only hit the price in terms of value but also hit the mark in terms of use,” remarked judge Alvah Simon, a world voyager. Click to read why the Catalina 309 won Domestic Boat of the Year for 2007 .

j/95 boat

The J/95’s retractable centerboard and dual rudders make it possible to sail in just 3 feet of water. During our dockside visit, designer Rod Johnstone told us that he wanted to build a comfortable coastal cruiser that could keep people sailing by providing “high performance in shallow water,” and the J/95 did exactly what Rod said it would. Click here to read how it won Best Weekender and Domestic Boat of the Year for 2010.

Catalina 315

catalina 315

This nifty pocket cruiser raises the Catalina quality bar with more comfort and better performance. It’s the little things that make this boat special, including the tall rig, the wide cockpit, the large anchor locker, the sprit for the asymmetric kite, and the clever use of space below. Click here to read how the Catalina 315 won Best Inshore Cruiser for 2013.

delphia 33

The Delphia 33 is a boat that’s maximized every inch of available space, and the overall fit and finish, from the joiner work to the systems installation to the structural integrity of the boat, is well done. Click here to read why the Delphia 33 won Import Boat of the Year in 2008.

hunter e33

“With this introductory cruiser, Hunter is trying to bring people up through its ranks and into cruising from trailer-sailers and smaller boats,” said Alvah Simon. “And the company has done that with a 33-footer that has quality and affordability but is still manageable and unintimidating.” Click here to read why the Hunter e33 won Best Compact Cruiser for 2012.

Moody S38: a good all-round family cruising boat

  • Duncan Kent
  • April 14, 2021

Looking for a good all-round family cruising boat with a good turn of speed, there are plenty of strong contenders, including the Moody S38

A moored Moody S38

An obvious sheer and high topsides make the Moody S38 a dry boat, while the beam carried aft boosts performance. Credit: Duncan Kent

Product Overview

Manufacturer:.

Partners Mick Jeffrey and Val Conway have owned boats and sailed together for decades and have very similar tastes with regard to their preferred type of yacht.

They started cruising many years ago in
a Westerly Konsort , followed by a Jaguar
27.

Both were great fun, they say, but a
little cramped when friends joined them
for a weekend.

Later, they moved up to a Moody 336, which they sailed extensively for 15 years, appreciating both her extra accommodation, performance under sail and her ability to take them further with less concern about the weather.

The Moody S38 helm is set up for singlehanding

The helm is set up for singlehanding

Four years ago, when Mick retired from his job as IT manager for a large bank, they decided to move up a little more to give them enough accommodation to cruise longer and further, and to provide more comfortable facilities both for themselves and their guests.

Although they looked at other makes, including a Wauquiez and a Sadler Starlight 39, they felt that, having had so few problems over the 15 years they had owned their 336, they had full confidence in the Moody brand.

Being keen on sailing performance, neither wanted a heavy and ponderous centre-cockpit boat, so they were drawn to the lighter and sleeker-looking, aft-cockpit Moody S38 – a natural progression from their 336.

The S38 was Moody’s attempt to
shake off the rather staid reputation
that earlier models in this marque had accumulated over the years, especially
with its earlier Angus Primrose designs.

Designer, Bill Dixon’s brief was to introduce the first aft cockpit ‘performance cruiser’
into the Moody stable, and 60 were built
by Marine Projects in Plymouth.

Moody S39 chart table

The forward-facing chart table on the Moody S38 has space for instrumentation. Credit: Duncan Kent

This
was indeed achieved thanks to her lighter build, shallower bilges, fine underwater
lines and lengthy waterline.

Although her standard masthead rig and sail plan
offered a reasonably generous sail
area, her sailing performance could
be improved further still by ordering the fractionally rigged Sport version, with its taller, double spreader mast and extra 7m²/75sq ft of sail area.

Yard options also included a deep or shoal fin keel, both versions sporting a high-aspect, semi-balanced rudder supported by a sturdy half skeg.

Mick and Val’s 1996 model, Chaika , has both the tall rig and the deep fin, although this requirement reduced their choice of available yachts on the market, meaning it took them a while to find a good example
for sale.

Despite her more streamlined hull, the Moody S38 was actually slightly beamier than the centre-cockpit Moody 38, thus enabling an equally spacious and comfortable accommodation to be created.

The S38’s maximum beam was carried further aft as well, which not only increased her form stability, but also made more space for a decent aft cabin – one
of the main selling points of the centre cockpit Moodys.

Galley on the Moody S38

A well equipped galley is good for long-term cruising. Credit: Duncan Kent

Mick said: ‘Although we loved the 336, Chaika offers a far better interior for extended cruising, which is what we’re planning to do as soon as Val retires as well. Having two heads in a 38-footer is a real boon and means our guests have their own private facilities to themselves.’

‘We also like the extra space in the aft cabin.’ says Val. ‘Being quite tall, with our 336 it was a real squeeze to get into the
aft bunk and headroom was almost non-existent.’

When going below you have to take care as the bridge deck is quite high and the companionway steps very steep – more like a ladder in fact.

Mick and Val sensibly choose to descend facing aft, helped by stout handholds each side.

Having an aft cockpit means the saloon has been brought further aft than in the 38CC model, allowing for a larger forecabin and ensuite heads compartment forward.

The Moody S38 was offered with either a large aft ‘owner’s suite’, as with Chaika , or twin double cabins.

This single cabin version has the benefit of a settee as you enter, bags of useful locker space and stowage, and good headroom in the dressing area.

The door is rather narrow, however.

Saloon on the Moody S38

Traditional joinery below gives the boat a homely feel. Credit: Duncan Kent

There’s an emergency escape hatch out to the cockpit above the furthest side of the berth from the door, which is a sensible precaution when your only other exit is through the galley – the most likely place for a fire to start.

The saloon is warm and woody, with ample seating on a good size U-shaped dinette to starboard (that converts to a double berth) and a straight settee opposite that measures 1.94m/6ft 3in long (including trotter box) and makes an ideal sea berth with a lee cloth.

Lockers abound throughout the saloon, galley and forecabin, although the water tanks (2 x 180l) take up most of the space under the seats.

Headroom in the main cabin is a healthy 1.90m/6ft 3in and there are numerous deckhead-mounted handrails to make getting around below when underway much safer.

Two other features were high on Mick and Val’s wish list – a decent galley and a forward-facing chart table.

Both of these are provided in spades by the Moody S38.

She has an impressive, wrap-around galley with everything you might need for long-term cruising including a full-size cooker, deep twin sinks, deep fridge, gash bin and ample stowage for food and cooking utensils.

There’s also a good size forward-facing chart table to port.

A smallish wet locker sits adjacent to the engine room.

Her original engine, a 39hp Volvo MD2040 freshwater-cooled diesel, was powerful for her size and provided plenty of grunt for battling a foul tide.

The larger sail area of the Sport version really boosts light wind performance on the Moody S38

The larger sail area of the Sport version really boosts light wind performance

On deck the S38’s cockpit is comparatively small, although it’s big enough for 3-4 to crew and is deep with nicely angled seatbacks and wide coaming tops.

Single handing is not difficult as the primaries are well within reach of the helm and the coachroof-mounted mainsheet is easy to reach around the smallish wheel.

All reefing controls and the kicker are brought aft to the coachroof winches
and clutches.

Stowage is reasonable in two shallow lockers, while the helm seat lifts up and a door in the transom opens to provide easy access to a deep step and folding boarding ladder.

Her decks are wide with good non-slip, and the foredeck has fittings for warps and ground tackle.

Mick says ‘The extra few feet on the mast in the Sport model increases the size of the mainsail, which provides more power in light airs. It does, though, mean she likes to be reefed early. We tend to put the first reef in the main at around 15 knots true for comfort. The jib, though, is small and the foot cut quite high, making it easier to see ahead in crowded waters.’

The standard furling genoa was 130%, which gives enough power upwind without making tacking too much like hard work.

Off the wind the Moody S38 is a moderately quick cruiser

Off the wind the Moody S38 is a moderately quick

When Yachting Monthly test sailed a similarly specced Moody S38 shortly after the official launch, we found her to be responsive and powerful, yet still easy to handle when hard onto the wind with 24 knots over the decks.

Her steering is positive, but not the lightest until she gets into her groove.

Off the wind she’s moderately (by modern cruising yacht standards) quick and holds her course with few alterations to her helm.

The only problems Mick and Val have encountered in their four years of ownership has been with the saildrive gearbox, which failed on them at sea.

Despite this, they managed to sail her back into the marina without incident,
‘a token to her excellent handling characteristics under sail,’ says Mick.

What the experts say about the Moody S38

James Jermain, Yachting Monthly boat tester and former editor

Her performance is a step ahead of the older 38, but it takes the taller fractional rig to put her truly into the sports cruiser class.

Above all she is a good all-rounder, capable of taking families offshore in safety or just pottering along the coastline in comfort.

Although she was constructed to Moody’s usual high standards and every hull was built to Lloyd’s specifications, some of the early Moody S38s suffered from various defects, including delamination, cracking and bulging on the coachroof above the forward heads compartment bulkhead, and again over the aft bulkheads where the bulkhead itself did not appear to fit properly.

Also watch out for delamination/bulging around the anchor locker drain and on the topsides below the stanchion bases.

They got better during the production run, however, with these few teething problems being quickly corrected on the original boats.

Duncan Kent, freelance yacht and equipment reviewer

The Moody S38 was a step, rather than a whole leap ahead for Moody at a time
when the French production yards were launching lighter, faster, beamier yachts
for a group of sailors keen to sail faster but without sacrificing the comforts of a luxurious accommodation.

Looking closely at the figures, the Moody S38 was in fact more moderate than extreme.

Her displacement to waterline length ratio of 242 put her in the moderate performance class, as did her modest 15.4 sail area to displacement ratio.

Though greater than most of the European 38-footers of that period, her sail area, even on the tall rig model, was less than the sportier Sweden Yachts 390 and Finngulf 38.

The taller rig is countered, however, by a deep fin keel, a healthy 36% ballast to displacement ratio and additional form stability provided by carrying the maximum beam a long way aft.

High topsides and pronounced positive sheer allow her to carve through the waves with a gentle nodding motion with little spray landing on the decks.

The Starlight 39 can be race or cruised shorthanded

Built by Bowman after the demise of Sadler Yachts, the Stephen Jones-designed Starlight 39 was conceived as a fast and seaworthy cruising boat that could be raced or cruised short-handed.

Although deep fin and shoal keels were offered, many owners opted for the more novel wing keel, which was intended to increase lift and stability when sailing to windward.

It also reduced her draft to 1.60m/5ft 3in and helped support her when taking the ground.

The hand-laminated hulls were built
using isopthalic resins and, like all
Sadlers before her, a one-piece GRP interior moulding incorporating fixings for bulkheads and furniture was bonded to the outer
hull and the gap between filled with
closed-cell polyurethane foam for buoyancy
and insulation.

Below, she has berths for six crew in two double ensuite cabins and the saloon, which has a warm, woody finish but with the four good size windows keeping it bright and airy.

The double drop-leaf table seats six comfortably and the galley is well-equipped for cruising with generous stowage, although it lacks preparation space.

Moody 42 – Yachting Monthly review

Duncan Kent sails the Moody 42 and finds a comfortable family cruiser equally suited to ocean crossings

She also has a decent navigation station with forward-facing chart table and room for plenty of charts, plotting gear, pilot
books and displays.

Behind it is a locker for oilskins.

Her cockpit is a little small due to the large bridge deck, which can make going below awkward at times.

However, it is deep and safe with high coamings and easy foot bracing. Stowage is generous, too.

Her tall masthead sloop rig supplies plenty of power, even in light airs, and the fully battened main with aft-led reefing lines simplifies handling.

Typical of Jones’ designs, the Starlights were renowned for their upwind performance and sea kindly manners.

She’s fast, points well and tacks deftly, while her helm remains light yet positive.

Westerly Typhoon 37

Heavily built, the Westerly Typhoon 37 tracks well up and downwind

The Ed Dubois-designed Typhoon was an attractive, streamline, sporty performance cruiser with a sumptuous interior for her day.

The hulls were heavily built using solid laminates, but with a balsa-cored deck.

Her 7/8ths fractional rig makes her a powerful performer who can be handled easily by a couple alone.

She has a huge aft cabin with settee and bags of stowage, but the clearance above the double berth is restricted a little by the cockpit well.

The forecabin is smaller but still has a heads and washbasin.

A large proportion of the main cabin is taken up with an excellent galley and large navigation station, at the expense of the saloon dining area, which is positioned well forward.

Headroom is over 6ft throughout, though, and the quality of furniture construction top-notch, with endless rich, warm teak on show.

On deck she has a large, well-organised cockpit, wheel steering and stout deck gear and winches.

Although the mainsheet track runs across immediately forward of the wheel, the primaries are on plinths by the companionway so well out of reach of the helm.

All other sail control lines are led aft to another pair of self-tailers on the coachroof.

Under sail, the Typhoon is reasonably quick and easy to handle, pointing well to windward and passing through tacks swiftly.

Her deep spade rudder and fin keel keep her well in the groove upwind and tracking on rails downwind, with only the lightest touch needed on her helm to keep her
on course.

Sweden Yachts 390

Very pretty lines and a sleek coachroof make the Sweden Yachts 390 an extremely attractive yacht.

The Sweden Yachts 390 is sporty, but still well set up for long term cruising

Using the IOR-inspired hull of the original Peter Norlin designed SY38, the 390 had a completely revamped and much improved deck and interior but kept the fine bow overhang and retroussé transom.

She is stoutly constructed with a balsa cored hull and deck, reinforced floor grid and bonded bulkheads.

The layout below is ideal for long-term cruising, with two double cabins, a quarterberth and two straight saloon settees/sea berths with lee cloths.

She has a good size galley to port and a large, outboard facing chart table to starboard.

The saloon is very comfortable and roomy with loads of warm mahogany.

Although forward of the saloon, the head is spacious and effectively ensuite to the forecabin.

Stowage is very good all round, although there are water tanks beneath both settees, and there’s over 1.90m/6ft 3in headroom throughout.

Her cockpit is well organised and set up for short-handed sailing, with the primary winches and double-ended mainsheet within easy reach of the helm.

Wide side decks lead to a clutter-free, flush foredeck.

Her tall, 7/8ths fractional rig and powerful sail plan make her a genuine performance yacht that ploughs on through the seas at an impressive lick shrugging off oncoming waves.

Despite being slick and close-winded, she is responsive, light on the helm and easy to handle in all but the worst conditions.

Best performance yachts: Our pick of the top options

  • Toby Hodges
  • March 10, 2023

Toby Hodges takes a look at all the nominees and the winner of the performance yachts 2022 category in the European Yacht of the Year Awards

The European Yacht of the Year awards is the most thorough and impartial awards programme – the winners here are widely considered the best yachts of the year . As such the boats nominated by the jury in the performance yachts category can be considered the best of the best.

This year’s shortlist had the full range. From the more conventional definitive style of performance cruiser to the contemporary French interpretation of a lightweight planing cruiser – and even a new brand of sports  catamarans  for the thrill seekers.

Three Italian pure performance yachts and two very different yachts built in Slovenia made for a varied and exciting Performance Yachts category.

Best performance yachts

Winner best performance yachts 2023 – beneteau first 36.

Where once we could assume a cruiser-racer was a fairly standard format design, over the last decade it’s been much more the sexy, perormance yachts the Italian yards specialise in. But as French yards like Pogo and JPK have proven, there’s growing enthusiasm for lightweight planing yachts – and the First 36 is the first real production yacht in that spirit.

Here’s a yacht that puts the focus firmly back into sailing. The First 36 has been kept inviting and approachable – unlike many yachts that can plane, the look is modest, not aggressive. It’s uncomplicated, unfussy and the result is a pleasure for all to sail. It’s more about what you can’t see, the design and engineering, which should ensure longterm demand.

The small, fiddly heads compartment and lack of tiller options are perhaps the only real detraction from an otherwise brilliant collaboration by Seascape and Beneteau, from concept to build quality.

It was their goal to keep this area of the market relevant and prove a mainstream brand can do it, rather than only niche specialist yards. To create a mass produced yacht at this weight and to this foam-cored quality and one that can bring so much fun is a feather in the cap of the First brand.

Grand Soleil 40

The Grand Soleil 40 is an archetypal Med cruiser-racer, and an absolute delight to sail – a feature I’ve learned that Matteo Polli designs tend to share (he also drew the Ecoracer). We sailed the race set up with ORC keel (an IRC version is available too) and six winches, an extended bowsprit and a taller mast. It was one of my most memorable trials of the season in 10-12 knots, with the deep and forward positioned rudder giving plenty of control and lovely direct steering.

The three cabin interior can have one or two heads and different galley options, the cabins are a good size with modest stowage, and it’s all tastefully styled by masters Nauta.

Italia yachts 12.98

At 5ft longer and from the board of Cossutti (who Polli once worked under), the Italia Yachts 12.98 is another cruiser-racer in the same grain as the GS40, but with a markedly different looking white interior. We sailed the ‘Bellissima’ cruising version, which 80% of customers have opted for.

Italia’s yard is now in Fano and its one-shot infused vinylester build looks impressive. However, the deck lacks some refinement and practical stowage, while the three cabin interior isn’t voluminous by today’s standards.

This is a slippery yacht that has a lovely, light feel on the single rudder – the interior styling will be the deal breaker for most.

Solaris Yachts on the other hand has perfected its recipe, tripling its yard size to cater to demand for its sexy Acebal-designed performance yachts.

The Solaris 50 we tested in 2015 and which won this award was arguably the turning point that propelled the brand’s popularity. The owner of the new 50 we tested previously had the original 50 and a 58 and confirms this replacement has nearly the same space as the 58, yet is faster, more powerful and stable than its predecessor (we easily matched 7-8 knot winds under gennaker).

It heels onto its chine and accelerates well, while twin rudders provide ample control. The design prioritises helming experience but the yard needs to come up with a better helm seat option. The interior is well executed, especially the spacious forward owner’s cabin.

The Elan E6 is a big 47-footer, high and beamy and one that leans more towards spirited cruising with generous accommodation over racing. That said, extensive options allow you to tailor it either way, including foam cored furniture and a taller carbon mast for those looking for extra oomph.

It’s a fine collaboration between Humphreys Yacht Design, Gurit, Pininfarina and Elan, while an impressive standard spec includes a carbon sprit and six winches.

The E6 is fun to sail at various angles and gives a nice, sporty feel on the helm – it likes to heel but has plenty of grip and tracks well.

The cockpit is deep and comfortable, with good optional protection and there’s ample deck stowage. A really smart three (or four) cabin interior shows a high standard of construction, finish and styling. It is bulky and you pay for the size in weight, but it looks good and Elan knows how to build a great boat for the price.

Best performance yachts 2022

Winner best performance yachts 2022 – jpk 39fc.

Along with fellow Brittany yard Pogo, JPK has redefined the modern performance cruiser: stiff, stable and efficient to the max. For the keen sailor who wants to get the utmost enjoyment out of hands-on cruising, the JPK 39 is a superb design (and to my eye, an appealing one too), while the yard has done a nice job with the vacuum-infused construction and interior fit-out. The two-cabin version we sailed had plenty of stowage too.

It looks different, behaves beautifully and stands up to its canvas, is designed to sail efficiently with a loaded displacement, and has a deck set-up to encourage you to trim it to your heart’s content. My only slight negative is the unnerving mess the cockpit can become as there are so many control lines.

This lightweight blast will best suit experienced sailors and those comfortable with short-handed sailing. And it guarantees smiles.

One such sports catamaran is the IC36, an exciting first offering from a new Czech brand that’s packed with fresh thinking. The first turbo version of this cruising catamaran (Independence) is built using a carbon fibre crossbeam, bowsprit, boards and rudders, epoxy hulls, plus a custom Pauger rotating mast, which all serve to keep weight below three tonnes.

It provided some spirited sailing, particularly when fetching at a measured pace of 10-13.5 knots with the code 0. The direct feel of tiller steering while seated in the low rotating bucket seats was a highlight.

The finish quality in the hulls is first class and there is somehow space for up to eight berths. The coachroof features a retractable bimini and removable vinyl side panels and solar panels, while the cockpit table, which includes an exterior galley, is also removable.

In fact the IC36 can be dismantled to 2.55m beam to make it legally trailable. It has so many options and ideas – too many perhaps – all reflected in the price.

Monohull enthusiasts will share our congratulations to J-Boats for its elegant new flagship. The J/45 won the hearts of the jury and made for a long drawn out decision against the JPK. In the end the two yachts will appeal to different sailors and tastes.

J has stayed true to its roots, yet still managed to bring a current, classy new offering. The unmistakable Alan Johnstone lines have been paired with a contemporary, warm European interior designed by Isabelle Racopeau, while much focus has been paid to the joinerwork and the invisible quality. We saw the two cabin version, which has an excellent technical cabin in place of the second aft cabin.

The J/45 is designed to still perform when loaded with cruising gear. True to J’s reputation, it was a witch upwind and could outpoint anything else during our trials. The compromise is that it won’t plane easily like a JPK or Pogo.

best 38 foot motor yacht

The Solaris 40 is another looker from Soto Acebal and the blue steel metallic hull colour of the test boat made the powerful hull shape really stand out.

We liked the recessed traveller, direct steering to the twin rudders, neat folding helm seats, clutches integrated into the coamings and the easy access to the side decks. However, the jury found the cockpit with its short benches and deck design a little too flat and minimalist.

The interior is smart and contemporary, again offered with two or three cabins with two heads it makes good use of the space.

best 38 foot motor yacht

One of the yachts I was looking forward to sailing most was the Pogo 44, and the only one shortlisted that I didn’t manage to! A collision with the photographer’s RIB shortly before my scheduled trial put it out of action.

However, my colleague Rupert Holmes did a full Pogo 44 test and report on it for Yachting World and describes the 44 as designed to thrill and unlike any other pure cruising yacht of its size. The stability from the beamy hull and deep lifting keel combines brilliantly with the ability to sail fast easily and in comfort. However some jury members didn’t like having to rely on an autopilot to use winches.

The interior is like a loft apartment, with so much natural light – it’s minimalist yet comfortable, spacious and practical for cruising.

Italyure 38 Sea Trial: a modern walkaround with timeless style

  • Alessio Molla
  • January 20, 2023

Italyure 38 is a timeless boat, conceived and designed to become an icon, to be admired in all her splendour like a star, a sort of Audrey Hepburn with her wealth of vintage charm, but with an absolutely modern style.

That is the feeling one gets when faced with this boat from the Italyure Yachts shipyard, presented for the first time in March 2021, conceived with the idea of creating something that would be multi-purpose, carefully designed and aimed at offering the most space available on board and great comfort when underway.

Will they have succeeded? Judge for yourself.

Italyure 38 , spacious and with all you need aboard

A mix of past and present, which therefore tends to make it an evergreen: this boat does not follow styles or fashions, but simply has a style all of its own. The yard offers three different versions: Classic , Comfort and Sport , the last being the one we tested, the only one of the three with outboard engines: two Suzuki 350 hp .

Aesthetically, the boat is immediately striking in its modern and elegant style as soon as you step aboard. Elements such as the structural fibreglass bracket, the sporty and eye-catching T-top, the latest generation of navigation equipment, LED lighting and the powerful Bluetooth music system make it unique and irresistible.

The Italyure 38 has the perfect size for entertaining family and friends. Externally, the boat has plenty of space both fore and aft. More specifically, the aft deck features a fold-down table that can be converted into a practical and comfortable sundeck, which can be fully shaded on the hottest and sunniest summer days by a retractable awning.

Italyure-38-running

Going below deck, in this Sport version, the Italyure 38 has the owner’s cabin positioned in the bow, separated by a dividing bulkhead and access door, beyond which there is a head with a shower cubicle in toughened glass and a Corian shower tray. The same material is used for the cabinetry equipped with a fridge, hob and microwave, which can be fully customized to suit the owner’s needs. Lastly, the guest cabin, with two single beds or a single double bed, can be customized according to the owner’s needs. Italyure 38 was created with the idea of offering a multi-purpose craft that allows for safe navigation in full comfort and with the possibility of being fully experienced both externally and internally.

Italyure 38 Sea Trial

Let’s start by saying that this boat is designed to be durable and with little maintenance required. It is built using the vacuum infusion technique and extensive use of carbon fibre, which results into an obvious weight saving, without compromising sturdiness: just think that one of the first Italyure 38s built, sold to a charter company on the Amalfi Coast, traveled 720 hours in its first year of navigation without experiencing any problems on board.

Italyure 38 on test

We climb aboard, with 700 horsepower behind us. With her two Suzuki 350s this Italyure 38, I believe, can give us a lot of satisfaction, a nice thrust that we want to push to the maximum, but as always we start from the bottom and it is interesting to note how the boats gets up on plane at around 1,800 rpm at a speed of 8.5 knots, while at 14 knots and around 3,200 revs the hull is already out of the water.

We are sailing in the beautiful Gulf of Naples on a day of long waves, not very high but quite treacherous, the classic wave that makes you crash into the sea, but not today. Because the hull’s work is impeccable: we are talking about a deep-V hull which, as I said, keeps the sea absolutely brilliantly without letting a splash of water get on board. We reach 22 knots and, at around 3,800 revs, we are consuming about 96 l/h; despite this, two people could comfortably sit at the bow and chat without the water touching them.

allure-38-underway

What else to say? This boat with a design by Maurizio Marzocca and built to the highest standards of craftsmanship is not only beautiful, it also performs absolutely well at sea. It is easy to use, it is practical, very spacious despite being homologated as a registration-free boat (with all that this entails in terms of less bureaucracy and lower running costs) and truly exciting in terms of seaworthiness. A boat that seduces at first sight.
