Sunreef Reveals New 40m Explorer Catamaran

Multihull specialists Sunreef Yachts has revealed a 40 metre catamaran explorer concept.

According to the yard, the new 40M Sunreef Explorer has been designed for "discovering new horizons" and will offer a "transoceanic range" with "solid performance in rough seas". 

An extended aft deck houses features a launching crane with stowage for a seven-metre tender, two Jet Skis and an arsenal of water toys. With the tender launched, a hydraulic aft platform can be lowered to water level, allowing guests to enjoy a full-beam swim platform. 

Meanwhile, a 13.34 metre beam allows for impressive living quarters with a total of 654 square metres of space split across three decks. A vast bow terrace provides guests with ample room for lounging and will be complemented by a spa pool surrounded by sun pads and a bar.

As with most Sunreef Catamarans, there are a number of customisation options available so no two yachts are ever the same. Custom features available on the 40M Sunreef Explorer include a private fold-out balcony off of the master suite and a playroom with a self-levelling pool table.

The 40M Sunreef Explorer is the largest catamaran in the Sunreef fleet, superseding the first 33.5 metre custom Sunreef 110 Power which was sold in November 2019 with delivery slated for 2021.

Compare The Most Popular 40ft Production Catamarans

Stephen and I are always exploring new catamaran models so we can share our insights with you. The information below continues to be valid, but we have a new 40ft catamaran comparison of later models for you to peruse.

We created a chart of each catamaran with a standard spec, ex-factory to compare the specifications and price of each boat. These catamarans compare very similarly on base price but there are a few differences.

The Bali 4.0 has a unique single cockpit / saloon area, entirely flush and unencumbered by bulkheads, accessible by a folding glass door on electric rams (kind of like a tilting garage door). This opens up the area and make it look like a much bigger boat. This catamaran combines some of the most innovative new characteristics in catamaran design which makes it a very desirable. It is quite a peppy sailboat and easy to maneuver.

Fountaine Pajot 40

The Fountaine Pajot 40 is replacing the Lipari 41 and is basically a smaller version of the successful Fountaine Pajot Helia 44 . It has a lot more volume than the Lipari, has a super stylish interior with island berths for the owner cabins (a much requested feature). It is lightweight but is smaller in volume than most of the the other models. However, because the living space was moved forward in the bows, there is still lots of room. We have not seen a boat yet, so the jury is out on how the boat will perform with these new changes. This model will be unveiled at the Paris boat show in December [2015].

The Leopard 40 ( video ) is heavier than the other models. The bridgedeck clearance is lower than those seen on French or Canadian cruising catamarans. Their philosophy is that a lower bridgedeck reduces the boat’s center of gravity with a wider stern to provide more buoyancy aft. However, a higher bridgedeck clearance translates into less slamming. We have owned cats with lower and higher clearances and a higher bridgedeck clearance definitely has less slamming. Read this article about bridgedeck clearance to make your own informed decision.

Lagoon 400S2

The Lagoon 400S2 has been on the market for a couple of years and is extremely popular. The S2 has decent performance with a lot of interior volume as can be seen here in the specifications. It has the biggest volume of the five 40ft catamaran models. This volume is said (by the competition) to translate into less performance but judging from rallies held around the world, it seems that the Lagoon really holds it’s own. Judging by the feedback from delivery skippers and owners on performance, the 400S2 makes a good performing cruising yacht. The interior is luxurious, accommodations are spacious and the cockpit is a nice size, easy to sail and good for a live aboard couple.

All of these catamarans are very acceptable cruising catamarans for a couple with lots of interior and exterior living space. These cats will do well as live-aboard and well as charter boats. Much of your choice will depend on personal preference. Do you prefer a “luxurious” interior, lots of interior volume and reasonable sailing performance, a more innovative design and optimal performance. Is chartering or cruising your ultimate goal or do you prefer a bit of both? All of these things should be weighed before you make a final choice.

The Lagoon 40 is the entry level catamaran for the famous French catamaran manufacturer now that they have stopped producing the 39, the 400 S2 and the iconic 380. The 40 is almost 800kg lighter than the 39- that will give you an idea of how Lagoon had adjusted the dial on this boat. The mast is further back than the 400 in the new Fourth Gen style and it is wider.

A Big Seller Will the 40 hit the kinds of sales that the 380 achieved? You wouldn’t bet against it, this looks like it will become one of the best selling Lagoon catamarans of all time. It will have to catch the 42 though. These days, of course, they have a lot of competition from the likes of Fountaine Pajot , Leopard and even sister company Excess.

Overall Design

Designed by long term Lagoon partners VPLP, the 40 has taken many of the design cues from her older and larger fourth generation sisters (especially the successful 42): a more angular, muscly look, bigger windows and portholes for more light.  The saloon windows are still vertical, that trademark Lagoon look, but they have been stretched which gives the boat a streamlined look.

4th Gen Styling with the Mast Further Aft With a vacuum-infusion construction and balsa coring in the deck and the hull above the waterline, the weight has been kept off as much as possible. The mast is well aft in the new 4th Gen style, with an easy to handle main and bigger foresail- all good stuff for sailing her short handed.

• The accommodation is the roomiest in her class, although Fountaine Pajot probably matches her with the Isla 40.
• She feels safe to clamber about – there are plenty of handrails to grab onto and most of the hatches are recessed on deck
• The Lagoon 40 is well set up for short-handed or even single handed sailing with that mast aft, big headsail configuration.
• She is surprisingly good upwind and great fun off the wind (especially with the larger headsail up in 18 knots of wind).
• Lagoon is a popular brand. If their previous models are anything to go by, there should be demand for your boat when it is time to sell.
• The Square Top main is an option. This should be first on your list in my opinion or you’ll risk feeling underpowered under sail, especially in lighter winds.
• Because the bimini stops short of the aft bench and that bulkhead helm, the aft cockpit will get wet quickly in a downpour.
• The saloon / aft cockpit area doesn’t feel as open as many of her competitors, especially with that mast support stepped so far back. It feels a bit like you have to weave your way into the saloon compared to more open designs like some of the Nautitech catamarans we have taken a look at.
• There is no ventilation in the roof in the saloon – this could get hot and stuffy quickly with the burners on.
• The folding ladder that you use to get onto the coachroof from the foredeck could be sturdier
• At 300L, the fresh water storage is on the low size compared to the competition.

2 steps take you up from the sugar-scoops to the aft cockpit where they have added an aft beam seat and a dining table with an L-Shaped wrap around sofa. The bulkhead helm peeps up over the bimini on the starboard side in traditional Lagoon Sport Top fashion, and there´s a day lounger tucked in behind it on the starboard side.

You´ll need to step up to see the bows though which makes it more difficult to reach the throttles. Coming in stern first when docking is the way to go, just duck under the bimini for the best visibility and at 38 and a half foot, she is very manoeuvrable with those twin engines (29HP or 40HP on the upgrade).

Getting up onto the bimini and to the mast is pretty easy- either jump up from the helm, or head up via the ladder from the foredeck. Most of the deck hatches are recessed on the deck (apart from the forepeaks).

Decent Visibility, Well Connected Overall, the helm position is a great compromise. You are connected to the cockpit, visibility is OK, and the mast is still low enough to access quickly and easily if you need to sort problems out with any lines.

The downside with these single bulk head helms is that it’s not so easy to trim your sails on both tacks. The genoa is problematic on the port tack. Also, if it´s raining hard, your aft cockpit is going to get wet quickly unless you get your helm covers up quickly, there is not as much protection as you get on cats with a full bimini.

The other thing with the 40, is that the bimini does not extend back to the aft of the boat. That gives you a view of the mainsail from the aft bench but again, that means there is less protection from the sun and rain at the back of the boat.

Well, this is where Lagoon excels, isn’t it? With fatter hulls than much of the competition, there is more room down here for accommodation and the 40 feels like a much bigger boat than 38 and a half feet.

The saloon and galley layout is pretty standard- why change a winning formula? There’s an aft facing galley on the port side (with only a single sink though). Forward is an ample wrap around sofa, the dining table and a nav desk tucked into the forward port corner.

To starboard aft is a refrigerator/freezer and plenty of storage. Ventilation comes from 2 forward hatches. They could do with some hatches in the roof in my opinion, I say that about most of the Lagoons. It would be cooler and you could keep an eye on the mainsail.

Three or Four Cabins Your options are three to four cabins and two to four heads. In the maestro version, the whole port hull is given over to the master suite, and it feels big. Forward is the head with a large shower , and aft is an island berth. Amidships, there’s an office space with a desk and sofa, and a sliding door to keep any pesky guests out. With those bigger port windows, it’s nice and light down here.

In the other hull to starboard, there are two guest cabins that share a head with a shower (or you can go for 2 smaller heads). If you really want to pack ’em in, you can configure the boat with 4 berths and 4 heads, but I’d go 4 berths and 2 or 3 heads or 3 berths and 2 or 3 heads.

It´s worth going for the square-top mainsail option on the 40, as this will catch the clean air up high and will move the Lagoon nicely in a breeze. Like most of the range, she won´t get going quickly in light airs, but once the wind fills in, this catamaran will move nicely, especially on a beam reach with the Code 0 up (go for the bowsprit option if you can). In a moderate to fresh force 4/5 you should see double digit speeds off the wind and respectable speeds (8 knots) pointing higher up to 50 degrees apparent.

Acceptable Upwind Performance Sailing upwind, you will probably be doing 110 degree tacks. Pinch her any further and the speed drops off and you will start to slip sideways, but that is true of many cruising cats. If you need to get up wind fast, fire up the leeward engine to give you a boost.

The standard sail area is 875ft with a self-tacking jib with sheets that lead back to a track on the coach roof just forward of the mast. This frees up the foredeck for a sunlounger cushion just aft of the nets.

She’s an easy boat to handle short-handed. All lines come back to the helm (apart from the furling lines for the headsails and the gennaker sheets). Make sure you go for the folding props- that should give you an extra knot.

The standard engine set up is twin 29HP Yanmars with saildrives, but I would recommend the upgrade to 2x 45HP to help you power through the chop. There is minimal weight penalty. The 40 will motor along happily at over 7 knots at 2,300 rpm and you should see 6 knots with just one engine running if you want to conserve diesel. The engine rooms are nice and roomy for maintenance – we have no complaints on that front.

The Lagoon 40 has every chance of match the 380’s sales number as long as they don’t launch another entry level boat any time soon.

The Market Leader There is stiff competition in this sector of the market, with Fountaine Pajot launching the Isla 40 (bit nippier, feels less robust), the Nautitech 40 Open (more performance, less space down below) and the Bali 4.1 (higher boom, more living space), but I would guess that the Lagoon is the top seller.

The charter companies have lapped this boat up and they remain very popular with owner operators too. It should definitely be on your short list.

How does the Lagoon 40 compare to the 400S2 and the 380? In terms of size, the 40 sits in between these 2 boats. With the mast stepped back, in general the Sail Area to Displacement ratios are lower for the newer Lagoons. In light winds, the game is all about getting the Code 0 up. The 410 is substantially longer and packs more sail power for its weight than the others.

How much does a new Lagoon 40 cost? The price is heavily dependent on the options you go for, but €500-550k gets you in the ball park for a new boat (ex taxes).

Lagoon 40 Catamaran Review

Conditions in Miami’s Government Cut were nearly perfect for testing the new Lagoon 40’s waterproof hatches. With a stiff onshore wind blowing straight down the channel to meet a brisk outgoing current, the cat’s bows plowed repeatedly into seriously steep waves, sending green water up and over the cabin top and raised helm, soaking Lagoon’s managing director, Yann Masselot, who happened to be at the wheel. Beneath the Bimini, though, sitting at the teak cockpit dining table and enjoying the splendid view — ahead through wraparound windows and astern across the wide-open transom — the ride was thoroughly dry and comfortable, as it should be on a catamaran capable of long-range cruising.

The 40 replaces a 39-footer in the Lagoon range as well as the popular Lagoon 400, which is being phased out after a 10-year run. Like its big sister, the Lagoon 50 , it bears the look of a new generation of catamarans from the French builder.

Both boats were designed by a longtime Lagoon collaborator, naval architectural firm Van Peteghem-Lauriot Prévost, with exterior styling by Patrick Le Quément and an interior by Nauta Design. They made their North American debut last winter at the Miami International Boat Show.

This latest breed of Lagoons still carries the brand’s vertical saloon windows, but its cabin roofs and Biminis have evolved and now seem to float atop the house. Larger ports are embedded in the hulls, bringing loads of light into the living space within, and the masts have been located farther aft (reflecting lessons VPLP has learned from its racing multihulls). The new sail plan translates into larger headsails and higher-aspect-­ratio square-topped mains for increased power.

Once in open water, we cut the engines and sailed first with a full main and the self-tacking jib set. The breeze wavered between 15 and 20 knots and moved us along closehauled at 7 knots through boisterous chop. On a broad reach and with the (optional) genoa unfurled, I saw 7.8 to 8 knots on the GPS, which jumped to 9 on occasion as we took off surfing. Good stuff.

I found the raised helm station on the 40 to be quite user friendly. You could reach it from both the cockpit and the side deck, and from the two-person seat, visibility was good on all four corners of the boat. An overhead canvas Bimini provided protection from the elements, but was fitted with roll-up flaps and windows so you could see the sails overhead. Winches were within reach, and with all lines led to the helm, trimming and tacking shorthanded was straightforward.

Lagoon these days infuses its balsa-cored hulls (solid fiberglass below the waterline), bridgedecks and decks with polyester resin and a layer of anti-osmotic resin to prevent blistering.

Interior furniture on the 40 is made from a walnut-colored Alpi; the dark woodwork and leather accents on things like stainless handrails contrast smartly with light-colored fabrics that cover cabin sides and ceilings.

The boat we sailed had a single owners cabin in the port hull. Its queen-size berth was aft and a head and separate shower forward, with storage spaces and a desk in between. There were cabins fore and aft in the starboard hull, each with queen-size bunks and hanging lockers. They shared a large head and separate shower amidships. The 40 also comes in a four-cabin layout, with either two or four heads.

Upstairs in the saloon, a large dining table is forward to starboard and has an L-shaped couch around it. The nav station is to port; its bench can be moved to add more seats at the table for guests. The galley, also L-shaped, is to port and aft, a convenient location when the sliding saloon door is open because the cockpit table is adjacent to it. Across the cockpit, there’s a lounging area under the helm station; another cushioned, forward-facing bench spans the bridgedeck from transom to transom.

The new design reflects a change in CE regulations that require engine rooms to have hatches that open from the safety of the cockpit. Previously, on most cats, hatches were lifted while standing on the transom or transom steps. In a following sea of any size, the benefit is obvious.

The 40 comes standard with two 29 hp Yanmar ­diesels. Delivered at the factory in France, the base price is just under $330,000. The boat we sailed had optional 45 hp Yanmars and saildrives. The power upgrade, plus a host of other options, brought the sticker price up to just over $540,000.

Forty feet is an attractive size for cruising families and charterers who want to enjoy no-heel sailing and the living space a multihull provides. The length makes the boat easy enough for a shorthanded crew to handle and maintain, but large enough for bluewater passages. The Lagoon 400 had a good 10-year run of it. As its replacement, the 40 should enjoy more of the same, but with a fresh new look.

Christened simply Explorer Eco 40m , the newcomer showcases two sharp bows that slice through incoming waves for smoother, more efficient cruising and two sleek hulls that move through the water with less drag than the average monohull. In addition, the cat has an ultra-light composite body. As such, the multihull requires much less energy for cruising than a conventional yacht.

Speaking of energy, the vessel is powered by twin 540 kW motors that give it a maximum speed of 14 knots and a cruising speed of 10 knots. Sunreef adds that the cat has “transatlantic capability” but didn’t provide an exact range. The hull and superstructure are also covered in Sunreef’s proprietary “solar skin.” The system, which includes hundreds of square feet of solar panels, reportedly generates enough power to run every system on board.

“We are the only superyacht builder to have successfully developed the idea of embedding solar cells into large-scale fiberglass structures,” adds Lapp.

Further toward the stern, a huge swim platform pulls triple duty as a beach club, a launchpad for watersports, and a dive store. The platform is also fitted with huge fold-down wings that create extra real estate around the corners of the boat. At the opposite end, the foredeck lounge provides guests with incredible ocean views.

As for accommodation, the cat can sleep up to 10 guests and seven crew. The main deck is home to four generous guest cabins, while the upper deck is devoted primarily to the owner. The full-beam owner’s suite sports a super king-size bed, a giant walk-in dressing room, a scenic lounge, and a private terrace.

Sunreef says the build time for the Explorer Eco 40m will be approximately three years. Construction will be carried out at either the Gdansk shipyard in Poland or the new Ras Al Khaimah facility in the United Arab Emirates. That’s your big-ticket purchase for 2027 sorted, then.

If you’ve spent many a pleasant weekend chartering or helming a cruising catamaran on the open sea, perhaps, just like me, you’ve started thinking about buying your own cruising catamaran . However, purchasing a cruising catamaran is no small decision; it’s essential to research the range of models to decide which will be best for you. 

Some of the best catamarans for cruising are the Sunreef 60, the Leopard 45, the Saona 46, the Manta 42, and the Antares 44i. A good cruising catamaran offers plenty of space, extended range and is optimized for comfort and safety. A cruiser is slower and less exciting to sail than a performance cat.

If you would like to own a catamaran, but your budget doesn’t stretch to purchasing a new one, look for a used, older model. Sunreef 60 (Power/Sail)

The Sunreef 60 is the epitome of luxury. It offers both powerful sailing performance and, with 60 feet (18.3 meters) in length, has an abundance of amenities for passengers. 

The Sunreef 60 has been commended by several industry experts, including SailWorld and YachtingWorld . Some of the best features of the Sunreef 60 include : 

• A large semi-open saloon that leads into the aft cockpit, the main deck, and the dining space 
• An aft hydraulic platform that can be used for water sports and sunbathing 
• A large flybridge that can house a pool, bar, and dining area 
• An aft garage that can be used as extra storage space

Both the Sunreef 60 and the eco version are excellent sailing crafts built for luxurious, long-distance cruises. They are still in production, so you can order a new vessel from Sunreef 60 . Used Sunreef 60s can be found on TheYachtMarket.com . 

As the Sunreef 60 is such a high-end vessel, be prepared to pay a premium price for one – new or used.

Nautitech 47 Power or Nautitech 46 Sail

The Nautitech 47 Power is a sleek power catamaran, designed by Nautitech Catamarans and architected by Marc Lombard.

Catamaran enthusiasts applaud the Nautitech 47 for its short extended hardtop, modern navigation station, and excellent bridge deck clearance . This Nautitech 47 Power has similar attractive features, including: 

• A large saloon with a 360-degree panorama 
• Optimized hulls and an optimized hardtop 
• A comfortable navigation station area that can seat two 
• A spacious gallery with large benches for working on 
• A generous flybridge and cockpit that provides plenty of room for lounging 
• The flybridge can also be enclosed, protecting it from bad weather
• A lifting platform that can be lowered into the water to create a ‘beach’ in the middle of the sea
• Three cabins which can be converted into four depending on how many guests you are entertaining 

The Nautitech 47 Power was launched in 2018 and is based on the Nautitech 46 Sail. It employs modern cruising and technical features, including:

• A draft of 3 feet 11 inches (1.20 meters)

• A water tank capacity of 2 x 79 gallons (2 x 300 liters)

The Leopard 45 is a luxury catamaran that is popular with both charter companies and private owners. Simonis-Voogd designed the external shell while Robertson and Caine did the internal interiors. As its name suggests, the Leopard 45 is 45 feet (13.72 meters) long. It has been recommended by Gregor Tarjan, author of ‘ The Complete Guide for Cruising Sailors ’ and the president of Aeroyacht Ltd. 

The Leopard 45 was launched in 2017 and carried forward some of the most popular features and design aspects of earlier Leopard models. For instance, the Leopard 45 has a flybridge lounge which includes space for a seating area, a sunbed, and a table. This feature won an award when it was included in the Leopard 50. Other positive attributes of the Leopard 45 include: 

• An increased aft area with floating stairs lead up to the cockpit
• The option to have three or four cabins depending on the number of guests you have 
• An open plan saloon and galley, adding to the catamaran’s overall spaciousness 
• A protected helm station 
• Hardtop lounge in the most recent models 

Some of the technical specifications of the Leopard 45 include: 

• A minimum draft of 4 feet 11 inches (1.5 meters) 
• A bridge deck clearance of 2 feet 9 inches (0.83 meters) 
• A freshwater capacity of 206 gallons (780 liters)
• A fuel capacity of 185 gallons (780 liters) 
• Two engines with 45 HP each

Lagoon 440 (Sail)

The Lagoon 440 is a catamaran recognized for its large interior volume, making it a popular catamaran for charter companies. However, the volume also makes it an excellent catamaran for families or owners looking to host large parties. Lagoon also made a power-cat version called the Lagoon 44.

At 44 feet (13.7 meters) long, the Lagoon 440 is relatively heavy. However, it has several functional advantages, including: 

• Four cabins with four en-suite heads 
• A bimini top 
• A cockpit with speakers and a shower that is easily accessible by guests 
• A large galley with potential for island top benches 
• Lazy jacks and a canvas catchment system that allows for easier sail handling 
• Additional storage space in the aft and cockpits 

Meanwhile, some of the technical specifications of the Lagoon 440 include: 

• A maximum draft of 4.3 feet (1.30 meters) 
• One engine capacity with a total power of 54 HP 
• Freshwater tanks with a capacity of 237 gallons (897 liters) 
• A fuel tank capacity of 172 gallons (651 liters)

While the Lagoon 440 has an excellent collection of features, it does have some drawbacks that users have noted. Some flybridge models of the Lagoon 440 have a high boom position that may make it difficult to access the sail bag. The saloon’s leading edge has a slight squaring, which may be challenging to get aesthetically used to. 

Despite these drawbacks, the Lagoon 440 is still a great option if you are on a strict budget. The Lagoon 440 had a six-year production run, where over 400 of the models were produced. Saona 47 (Sail)

Made by Fountaine Pajot, the Saona 47 is a luxury catamaran that is 45.7 feet (13.94 meters) long. Designed by Berret-Racoupeau Yacht Design, it has received several industry and maritime awards, including SAIL magazine’s award for the best multihull cruising boat (40-50 feet). 

Launched in April 2017, the Saona 47 is relatively new on the market. As a result, it features a modern design and modern amenities. Some of the most enticing features of the Saona 47 include: 

• Several spaces for passengers to lounge and relax, including a large sunbathing area, a lounge deck, and an open plan cockpit
• A lift that can also be converted into a swimming platform
• A large galley with an island bench 
• Three cabins, with the master cabin having an en-suite bathroom. If you’re looking to charter it, there is a four-cabin version with space for a crew.
• Good visibility from the helm and the opportunity to engage with other passengers 

The Saona 47 also offers an excellent sailing performance. It has a carefully planned weight-to-value ratio, which allows for both speed and stability. Some of the technical features of the Saona 47 are: 

• A draft of 4.3 feet (1.3 meters) 
• A sail area of 828.8 feet (77 meters)
• A fuel capacity of 2 x 124 gallons (2 x 470 litres)

Excess 12 (Sail)

The Excess 12 was launched in 2019 by Groupe Beneteau, the same group which designs Lagoon catamarans. The Excess range has been created for performance-oriented sailing vessels. The catamarans in the range have been applauded for their sailing prowess and their space. The Excess 12 was the first of the range and has been named the best cruising multihull under 40 feet by Sail Magazine. 

Designed by VPLP Design, the Excess 12 is considered a ‘sporty’ catamaran. It is 38 feet and 6 inches (11.74 meters). It has an open bimini and a light helm that gives it a feel similar to a monohull. Other attractive features of the Excess 12 include: 

• A cockpit with a retractable roof that allows for direct access to sunlight 
• The cockpit also has dining space for up to 8 people 
• Room for two to three people in the helm
• The option between three or four cabins 
• A high aspect rig ratio 
• An aft double steering station 
• Most areas of the Excess 12 are constructed with cedar and white blend woodwork and united windows, making for a beautiful, natural aesthetic

Reviewers of the Excess 12 note a minor drawback of the twin aft helm. Its location in the corner of the cabin can create a blind spot. Other than this, many of the sailing features of the Excess 12 are positively received. These include: 

• A draft of 4 feet and 5 inches (1.35 meters) 
• An upwind sail area of 82 meters (269 feet)
• A fuel capacity of 2 x 53 gallons (2 x 200 liters) 
• The freshwater capacity of 79 gallons (300 liters)

Manta 42 (Sail)

The Manta 42 is one of the most popular models from Manta, an older brand known for its high-quality catamarans. 

The Manta 42 was launched in the late 1990s and was in production until the late 2000s. It received the ‘Best Value Overall’ prize in CW’s 2001 Boat of the Year. Even though it is an older model, it remains a beloved model today and is an excellent option if you are on a tighter budget. 

Designed by Eric Lerouge, a French naval architect, the Manta 42 has a variety of attractive features: 

• Great sail to area displacement ratio, which makes for smoother sailing
• A spacious aft cockpit area that can be upgraded and customized to suit your own particular design needs 
• High bows and curved forward crossbeam make for a streamlined appearance
• Room for three cabins and two heads. The owner’s cabin has its own en-suite bathroom with a large shower. 
• Glass-enclosed cockpit
• The interior finish is made with maple and teak wood 

Meanwhile, some of the technical and sailing features of the Manta 42 are as follows: 

• A draft of 3.8 feet (1.2 meters) 
• One engine with a total power of 60 HP 
• Two holding tanks with a fuel capacity of 120 gallons (454 liters)
• The freshwater capacity of 100 gallons (379 liters)

If you decide to take the plunge and buy a Manta 42, you will become a member of the Manta Owners Association . This association connects you to other manta owners who offer advice and conversations about Manta maintenance and sailing. 

You cannot buy the Manta 42 new. However, there are plenty of used Manta 42 models available on YachtWorld.com . 

A used Manta 42 will cost you somewhere between $239 000 – $325 000

Antares 44i (Sail)

The Antares 44i is another older model that offers excellent value for money if you’re working with a lower budget. Its production began in Argentina in the late 2000s. This yacht was built with round-the-world sailing in mind, and it has excellent amenities from both a technical and passenger perspective. 

Some of the best passenger facilities the Antares 44i offers are: 

• An extended galley with plenty of storage space 
• Three cabins, with two at the hulls and one forward cabin on the port side 
• Stainless steel arch aft with plenty of space for dinghies 
• A cockpit with room for a BBQ and room for lounging 

While it is an older model, the Antares 44i still has plenty of modern sailing features and storage room, making it a great long-distance cruiser. Here are some of the attractive technical features: 

• A maximum draft of 4 feet (1.2 meters) 
• A bridge clearance of 62 feet (18.9 meters) 
• Two engines with a total power of 80 HP 
• Fuel tanks with a capacity of 120 gallons (454 liters) 
• Freshwater tanks with a capacity of 150 gallons (568 liters)

Today, the Antares Catamarans company has built a newer version of the Antares 44i – the Antares 44 , which you can consider if you want to buy a new catamaran. However, the Antares 44i continues to be a great option. You can buy a used Antares 44i on YatchtWorld.com . 

Price: $495 000 – $860 000

Catana 50 (Sail)

The Catana 50 is another older model that can hold its own against many more modern cruising catamarans. Like the Antares 44i, it is a more pocket-friendly option that doesn’t compromise sailing quality and passenger amenities. 

Catana is one of the world’s best catamaran producers, known for creating stable yet fast boats and for their quality finishes. Besides being produced by Catana, the Catana 50 has been architected by Christophe Barreau, a world class naval architect. Some of the best features that the Catana 50 boasts are: 

• A length of 50 feet (15 meters)
• Deep daggerboards allow for excellent windward performance
• Made with carbon fiber which allows for stability and speed 
• Hardtop over cockpit 
• Twin aft helm stations 
• Three cabins which can sleep 6 
• Satin oak interior finishes 

Meanwhile, the technical specifications of the Catana 50 include: 

• A draft of 4 feet (1.2 meters) 
• A bridge clearance of 23.7 feet (7 meters) 
• Two engines with a total power of 150 HP 
• Fuel tanks with a capacity of 227 gallons (860 liters) 
• Freshwater tanks with a capacity of 211 gallons (800 liters)

Catana does not produce the Catana 50 anymore. However, you can look for a pre-owned Catana 50 on the CatanaServices website or YatchtWorld.com . There are models of the Catana 50 available for secondhand sale across the world.

A Catana 50 will set you back somewhere between $644 000 – $692 000

Atlantic 42 (Sail)

Like the Manta 42, the Atlantic 42 is a smaller-sized catamaran. It is 42 feet (12.8 meters) long but is spacious and fuel-efficient. It was designed by Chris White , who specializes in designing high-performance catamarans.

The Atlantic 42 was in production in 1999 but boasts many classic features found in modern-day catamarans. The Atlantic 42 has been the recipient of Cruising World magazine’s Boat of the Year award. Noteworthy features in the Atlantic 42 include: 

• A high waist and forward cockpit 
• Custom aft deck allowing for easy access to the dinghy storage
• Interior design constructed with teak and holly wood
• Navigation station with space for two seats
• A secure, raised pilothouse that allows for excellent visibility in stormy weather 
• A galley with enough space for long-distance cruises 
• Two double cabins and two single cabins 

In addition to good passenger amenities, the Atlantic 42 has some excellent sailing specifications, including: 

• Water capacity of 80 gallons (302.8 liters) 
• Fuel capacity of 80 gallons (302.8 liters) 
• A bridge deck clearance of 62 feet (18.9 meters) 
• Engines with a total power of 58 HO

Seawind 1160 (Sail)

The Seawind 1160 is a long-distance cruiser produced by Seawind Catamarans , a leading catamaran manufacturer designing and building catamarans for over 35 years. 

This catamaran is available in two styles : the lite Seawind 1160 and the deluxe Seawind 1160. The deluxe catamaran operates with diesel sail drives that allow for excellent torque and fuel capacity. Meanwhile, the lite version works with outboard motors that reduce the catamaran’s overall weight. It also has more storage internally on the boat, and lower maintenance and replacement costs.

The Seawind 1160 has won Cruising World’s ‘Most Innovative Boat’ award in 2007. It won this award thanks to its tri-folding door, which opens the saloon and the cockpit to form a living or lounging area. Other significant design aspects and passenger amenities include: 

• Twin helm stations 
• 360-degree visibility from the cockpit 
• Grey wash and timber interior to make for a highly modern interior 
• Three cabins in the owner’s version of the catamaran with a queen-sized bed in the master cabin
• Hulls made of fiberglass

Produced by Fountaine Pajot, the Bahia 46 has a sophisticated design that makes it an excellent choice. The Bahia 46 was also designed in conjunction with Joubert-Nivelt and Oliver Flahault.

• Larger than usual hulls
• Daggerboards are strategically placed to minimize draft 
• A six post-bimini that can hold dinghies 
• Isolated engines that prevent passengers from being disturbed by the house and smell of the engines 
• Generous cabin area with an enclosed space that provides protection from severe weather
• A large cockpit with a dining space that can seat 10 

As well as offering excellent passenger and design amenities, the Bahia 46 has some attractive sailing features and specifications. These include: 

• A draft of 4 feet 3 inches (1.30 meters) 
• A fuel capacity of 100 gallons (378 liters) 
• A freshwater capacity of 220 gallons (833 liters)

• A forward cockpit with a removable table 
• The choice between a four or three-cabin version 
• A helm station with a canvas cover that offers weather protection
