More than thirty-years old is the experience in the speedboat racing that Guido Bonandrini brought joining himself to the Gamma Yachts group.

But above all the hinge was the sharing of the values and the ideas with Marnix Hoekstra and Bart Bouwhueis, respectively naval engineer and naval architect and co-holder of the prestigious Vripack study in the Netherlands, that gave rise to this prestigious partnership of studies whereas the shut comparison, the passion and the competence, the styling and the technique found an unavoidable conjugation point in the born of these Steel Superyachts from 16 up to 24 meters length where the common denominators are: sturdiness, reliability, charme and elegance.

Launched by Gamma Yachts in 2014, motor yacht Libertas is a lovely 22-metre Gamma 20 super yacht series vessel, both designed and built in Holland. Luxury yacht Libertas by Gamma Yachts can easily achieve a top speed of 16 knots and a cruising speed of 14 knots, thanks to her Caterpillar C12 ACERT 715hp diesel engine. She is RINA classed and features a steel hull.

Transcending the conventional

When former T850 powerboat racing champion calls to tell you he’s prepared a brief that will test the limits of your design capabilities, you’re all ears. Guido Bonandrini’s racing days may be over, but he continues to set the bar high in everything that he does and for everyone with whom he works. His wish list for the Gamma line would reveal this occasion to be no exception.

The yachts were to distinguish themselves on multiple levels. First and foremost they would need to be beautifully crafted throughout. They would need to offer at least 15% more usable interior floor space than the nearest competitor, and Bonandrini wanted clients to be able to order their steel-hulled, semi-custom-built yacht at the autumn boat show and merrily set sail on it the following summer. The speed king was effectively requesting a 25% compression in build time.

OWNER OF LIBERTAS

In one methodical and decisive brainstorming session, a designer asked his colleague, a naval architect, if the space typically allowed between the engines was for technical purpose. On hearing that it wasn’t, the team realised they had found their springboard. In creating an interior walkway between the engines, the space behind them would now be accessible, and a full-beam aft owner’s stateroom could be accommodated, resulting in the requested real estate gain.

INNOVATIVE YACHT DESIGN

This novel solution also meant more freedom of movement for occupants, with the elements that normally break up a room, such as the stairs, becoming integral parts of the décor, which the team would finish in the same rich hardwoods and calf leathers as the custom-built cabinets and doors. For the lady’s haute couture dress, the Vripack’s designers omitted all non-essential lines, giving the yacht visual clarity and distinction.

SETTING ANOTHER BENCHMARK

Bonandrini’s understandable yet outrageous build-time request was perfectly timed, as Vripack’s engineers had just prototyped Smart Kit ® , their radical new build method. By adopting cutting-edge technology from the fields of robotics, laser cutting and virtual prototyping, they managed to build the Gamma yacht in nine months, setting yet another benchmark.

One could be forgiven for assuming that such disruptive changes must come at a price, probably in the form of restriction, but a moon-shot can’t be considered a success unless it results in free added benefits. For instance, given that one client might love all fresco dining on the aft deck while another appreciates a diving board, each Gamma comes with a unique flying bridge. And as one client might need an extra bedroom while another would love an on-board laundry or sauna, the same goes for the entire layout.

Andrea Bocelli’s New Yacht

Gamma Yachts has delivered its third Gamma 20, a 72-footer christened Libertas that is the builder’s most highly customized yet.

The owner is singer Andrea Bocelli, who has sold more than 100 million records worldwide.

Vripack designed Libertas , which was built in Holland with interior furnishings and materials from Italy. Gamma Yachts calls its boats mini-superyachts because of their level of customization, and Bocelli ordered more personal touches than other previous owners.

“The main elements of the Gamma 20 that are dictated to a client are the hull and superstructure shape,” Gamma Yachts CEO Guido Bonandrini stated in a press release. “Almost all other aspects can be adapted to the client’s tastes, much like you would expect on a yacht of larger size.”

Bocelli’s requests included a table and sofa forward of the wheelhouse, a custom diving board on the extended flybridge and metallic electric blue hull paint. Standard layout is three staterooms, but Bocelli added a fourth to accommodate a total of nine guests. He also increased the size of the windows in the master cabin, installed a piano and recording-studio equipment in the main salon and chose matte oak paneling with natural oak floors for the interior décor.

“I love the way space has been arranged so that our large, extended family can be together, enjoying closeness and intimacy while at the same time respecting everybody’s privacy,” Bocelli stated in a press release. “Coziness, warm materials, safety, low noise levels and comfort: These were my needs, and they have been fully met.”

Libertas was delivered in 10 months. Gamma also builds a larger model that accommodates 12 guests. More information is at www.gamma-yachts.com.

Vripack , a world leader in naval architecture, has designed a yacht for Gamma Yachts ‘ Mini Superyachts series. Called Gamma 20 , this steel yacht measures 22.10 m (73.00 ft) and uses the Smart Kit construction method .

The Gamma 20 will come with an elegant exterior, a 360° wheelhouse with a panoramic view and spacious room for up to 8 persons, including two crew members.

The fly bridge will also have a wet bar with grill and steeling console wherein guests can spend a relaxing time under the sun. Inside the yacht will be a dinette, salon and a galley. The engine rooms will also comprise dual engines that handle propulsion.

According to Vripack, the Gamma 20 is expected to be completed in about 7 months.

The Smart Kit

Also launched by Vripack, the yacht industry witnessed the birth of the Smart Kit construction method at the 2009 Fort Lauderdale Boat Show. This kit will be gauged for its performance on the still ongoing construction of the Gamma 20.

The Smart Kit construction method comes with a load of features. It has a precision detail 3D engineering which allows for less tedious production process. As a result, hours and hours of metal production is significantly reduced and standard profiles are replaced with CNC.

In addition, the Smart Kit allows faster pre-assembling support for builders with more accurate dimensions in only a shorter length of time. This reduces noise, fairing as well as the number of hours needed for construction, which in turns makes for a cost-efficient yacht that zooms fast through the waters.

With the Smart Kit construction method, builders no longer need have to purchase new tools or learn techniques to simplify construction. The Smart Kit has been considered to be a revolutionary breakthrough in the yacht industry for its ability to speed up the entire production process.

Both built and designed in Holland, the yacht combines the precision and technical capabilities of the Dutch with world-class interior furnishings and materials from Italy. Although the traditional threshold for a superyacht starts at 30m in length, Gamma Yachts CEO Guido Bonandrini comments that the degree of customization available to an owner in the Gamma 20 is much closer to that of a superyacht than any other vessel in this size range. “The main elements of the Gamma 20 that are dictated to a client are the hull and superstructure shape; almost all other aspects can be adapted to the client’s tastes, much like you would expect on a yacht of a larger size. Particularly to the exterior fly bridge, we have seen major variations in each of the vessels delivered so far”.

For this yacht’s exterior, Bocelli specified a table and sofa to be placed forward of wheelhouse to offer true immersion into the surroundings, particularly when underway. There is also a custom-built diving board on the extended fly bridge to jump off the uppermost point of the yacht, and the hull is painted in an eye-catching metallic electric blue.

Making full use of the volume provided by the wave-piercing bow with quarters for two crew, the Gamma 20 offers 170 sqm of living space including the lower deck, main deck, fly bridge and walk-around. The addition of a fourth cabin in this yacht increases the accommodation to up nine guests, and the windows in the master cabin have been increased to let in more light and views of the surroundings. Double-glazing insulates the interior, allowing the piano and recording studio equipment to be used in the main salon. For the interior finishes, the owner chose matte oak panelling with natural oak floors. The galley is fitted out with white Parapan and grey stained oak flooring.

The award-winning designers from Vripack carried out extensive testing and modeling to ensure the Gamma 20 matches up to the expectations of an owner looking for a superyacht experience in a more compact vessel. Vripack worked on the noise and vibration testing with Dutch firm Van Cappellan Consultancy, which also provided the insulation; and stabilisers from Naiad offer guests equal comfort whether at anchor or docked in a marina. As well as adding additional space for crew accommodation forward, the bow shape also provides excellent fuel economy for the yacht, which has a range of 1,270nm on 5,500L of fuel.

“There are a number of striking features that prove the power of such holistic thinking,” says Bart Bouwhuis of Vripack. “For instance, the lack of steps and obstructions: each deck is truly on one level, preventing the risk of tripping. This is combined with fast displacement hull lines that are used specifically for comfort at anchor and at sea. The approach goes as far as the actual structure of the yacht to minimise the build time, applying our proprietary Smart Kit building technology. This allows the boat to be built faster as well as for a more rigid end product, which reduces noise and vibration to improve the guests’ experience.”

Andrea Bocelli, who has previously owned several vessels in this size range, comments that the newly delivered Gamma 20 is by far his favourite: “I love the way space has been arranged so that our large extended family can be together, enjoying closeness and intimacy, while at the same time respecting everybody’s privacy. A yacht must meet precise needs and be able to make us feel at ease; it must comply with – and express both architecturally and technically – the same priorities as those living on it. Coziness, warm materials, safety, low noise levels and comfort: these were my needs, and they have been fully met. I needed a solid, safe and comfortable boat, and I am very happy with my choice in the Gamma 20.”
