Investigation launched into captain after sinking of yacht off Sicily

After the sinking of the luxury yacht Bayesian off Sicily, which resulted in seven fatalities, the prosecution has launched an investigation into the captain, Italian media reports said on Monday.

He is being investigated for negligent homicide and shipwreck, the news agency ANSA and the daily newspaper La Repubblica reported. On Sunday, he was questioned for the second time within a week.

The accident, near the shore of the Italian Mediterranean island, claimed the lives of British billionaire Mike Lynch, 59, and his 18-year-old daughter last Monday, as well as two couples who were friends and the ship's cook. Fifteen people were able to be rescued.

The billionaire software entrepreneur had intended to celebrate a court acquittal on a sailing trip with family, friends and business partners.

According to investigators' findings, at around 4 am (0200 GMT), the Bayesian was hit by a downdraught during a storm with wind speeds of more than 100 kilometres per hour. It sank within minutes.

It is presumed that the victims were caught in their cabins while asleep and could not save themselves from the water.

During the most recent questioning of the captain, the reports said the focus was partly on whether doors and hatches were open or closed during the incident and when the alarm was triggered. He was subsequently added to the register of suspects.

The investigators are currently also questioning the other crew members. It is not ruled out that some crew members may also be investigated.

Bodies of Autonomy founder Mike Lynch and his daughter recovered from sunken Bayesian yacht

Mike Lynch, the U.K. investor and founder of IT company Autonomy, has been identified as one of two bodies recovered from the Bayesian, the yacht that sunk off the coast of Sicily early Monday, according to several reports coming out of the country that cite the chief of Civil Protection, Salvo Cocina. The boat, registered to Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, quickly capsized in the early hours of Monday after it was struck by a tornado-like water column. In a tragic coincidence, Chamberlain was hit by a car last Saturday and died of his wounds earlier this week.

Liverpool FC owner’s £66 million superyacht spotted off Broughty Ferry

Elysian, owned American businessman John W Henry, has a helipad and heated pool.

Superyacht Elysian with Tentsmuir Forest in the background.

A £66 million superyacht belonging to Liverpool FC owner John W Henry has been spotted off Broughty Ferry.

Elysian, a 66-metre-long vessel, docked in the Tay – between Broughty Ferry and Tayport – on Monday morning.

It travelled to the Tay from Aberdeen, where it was berthed over the weekend.

Locals said those on board the luxury yacht appeared to be using a smaller boat to reach the shore.

Superyacht Elysian visits the Tay

It is understood Henry was among them.

The yacht has since moved out towards Barry Buddon.

One onlooker said: “I think it belongs to the owner of a Premier League football team as I’d read it was up in Aberdeen yesterday .

“We were walking along the beach this morning when we spotted it.

The Elysian travels across the Tay

“You think they’d rather be in the Mediterranean at this time of year with a boat like that.”

Elysian’s arrival in the Tay was mentioned by  Liverpool fan group KopTalkTV on YouTube .

In the video, the host said: “Don’t assume that he is in the UK just because the yacht’s in the UK.

John Henry’s superyacht spotted off Broughty Ferry after Liverpool game

“Maybe if you see him at the game then he’s obviously there, and what happened – he turned up at the game .”

The reason for the visit has not been confirmed but some locals have speculated Henry may be heading to the Old Course in St Andrews.

The yacht, which sails under the Cayman Islands flag, was built in Germany.

With a top speed of 16.5 knots, it has an outdoor swimming pool, helipad, spa centre and gym and glass lift.

There is room on board for up to 12 guests and 17 crew.

Previously named Ester III, the yacht was once owned by Russian entrepreneur Georgy Bedzhamov.

American businessman Henry – who also owns the Boston Red Sox and Pittsburgh Penguins – bought the ship in 2016.

Mike Lynch 'questioned Lucy Letby's murder convictions' before dying in yacht tragedy

Tech billionaire Mike Lynch, who was one of seven people to die in the sinking of his Bayesian yacht, had allegedly questioned the convictions of killer nurse Lucy Letby

  • Updated 11:31, 26 Aug 2024

Late tech billionaire Mike Lynch considered funding an "Innocence Project" for Lucy Letby after questioning her conviction, a Tory minister has claimed.

The businessman was one of seven people to die after a storm in Sicily caused his yacht, named the Bayesian , to sink off the coast within minutes last week. Of the 22 people on board, 15 people - including Mr Lynch's wife Angela Bacares - were rescued after escaping on to a lifeboat.

But the tragedy claimed the lives of Mr Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah Lynch , the boat's chef Recaldo Thomas, Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer and wife Judith Bloomer, a charity trustee, Clifford Chance lawyer Christopher Morvillo, and his wife Neda Morvillo.

Former Brexit secretary David Davis has now claimed the tech mogul had voiced concerns about the conviction of killer nurse Lucy Letby and was keen to look into her case further. Letby was convicted of murdering six babies and the attempted murders of seven others, including two attempts to murder one of the infants at the Countess of Chester Hospital. The 34-year-old received 15 whole life orders following her convictions at Manchester Crown Court.

Writing in the Sunday Times, Davis claimed Lynch had "raised the case of the Lucy Letby trial as one that had already caught his attention", adding: "Mike was a world-class expert on probability theory, and saw straight through the statistical weaknesses that underpinned the Letby prosecution."

According to Davis, the businessman turned his attention to miscarriages of justice after his own experience in dealing with US authorities - and being cleared of fraud charges he faced across the pond in a gruelling decade-long case. Lynch was accused of inflating the value of his company, Autonomy, ahead of its sale to Hewlett-Packard (HP) in 2011, before being acquitted in June this year.

Mr Davis said: "The tragic death of Mike Lynch marks the end of an incredible life and the loss of a man whose name became synonymous with battling the injustices of the UK-US extradition treaty."

Condemning Lynch's extradition, Davis added: "In Mike's case the highly politicised American prosecutorial system acted like an arm of corporate America, in this case Hewlett-Packard. The American case was so flimsy that an American jury threw out all 15 charges, and an initially hostile judge completely changed his stance."

Following the tragedy, a spokesperson for the Lynch family said: “The Lynch family is devastated, in shock and is being comforted and supported by family and friends. Their thoughts are with everyone affected by the tragedy. They would like to sincerely thank the Italian coastguard, emergency services and all those who helped in the rescue. Their one request now is that their privacy be respected at this time of unspeakable grief.”

Mike's daughter Hannah had recently finished her A-levels and was due to study English at Oxford University. In a heartbreaking statement , her sister Esme Lynch said: " She was endlessly caring, passionately mad, unintentionally hilarious and the most amazing, supportive and joyful sister and best friend to me.

And on top of all this, she had even more love to give endlessly to all her friends and passion to give to her incredible studies and goals. She is my little angel, my star."

Jon Mitropoulos-Monk, Head of English at Latymer Upper School, where Hannah attended, said Hannah was "One of the best English students in the country" who "scored 100% in her English Literature GCSE."
