Best Vacuum Cleaner For Boats [What Actually Works]

roomba 13 sailboat

Fun fact – I used to make a living cleaning boats! Not at a fancy detail shop, but at a boat dealership, tackling pontoons, jet boats, bowriders, wake-boats, and more.

Now, here’s the juicy part – there’s a vacuum cleaner that’s an absolute game-changer for boat cleaning. It’s not your everyday vacuum, but boy, does it work wonders!

In this chat, I’m spilling the beans on why this particular vacuum cleaner is the boat-cleaning champion and dishing out some valuable tips I’ve picked up along the way. So, whether you’re a fellow boat enthusiast or just curious about top-notch cleaning gear, you’re in for a treat!

The Best Vacuum For Boats

The best vacuum cleaner for a boat will be a shop vacuum or wet/dry vac as they’re also called. I’m going to list the reasons why I consider a shop vacuum the best option.

  • They can suck up water: The biggest reason why a shop vacuum is the best option for cleaning a boat is that it can suck up water and wet messes . You’re on a boat, and water will be sitting in many places. From the boat sitting over the winter and now a pool of water is on the cover or in the corners under the seats, you’ll be sucking up water at some point. The water that gets trapped is what makes the boat the most dirty, so being able to clean up the water is a must, and only a shop vacuum can do that.
  • Overly powerful: A shop vacuum is made for commercial settings and sucking up large things like bolts and screws. So, the leaves and other debris that gets stuck on the floor and crevices of your boat are no match for a shop vacuum.
  • Large capacity: Most shop vacuums have a larger dustbin than the Dyson or other household vacuum cleaners. This means less getting in and out of the boat to dump the contents. Even the smaller cordless shop vacuums have larger dustbins than most household vacuum cleaners.
  • Durable: As covered, shop vacuums are made for commercial and work settings, so that also means they can take abuse a lot more than your normal household vacuum cleaner. Dropping a shop vacuum out of a boat is less worrying than dropping your Dyson.
  • Affordable: Even though shop vacuums are more powerful, more durable and larger, you’ll be surprised to find they’re not more expensive. You can buy several shop vacuums for the price of one fancy, top of the line Dyson vacuum cleaner. Even the cordless shop vacuums are reasonable in comparison to some of the fancy vacuum cleaners that, so many websites, like to push.
  • Cordless options: Cordless or battery-powered shop vacuums have really taken off lately and are quite good. I have one I use on the daily for my boat and other items around the home. The best part is that you don’t need to worry about a cord, and you still get all the benefits of a shop vacuum, like sucking up watery messes. There is no second thought about cleaning up a mess, a cordless shop is a grab-and-go easy solution.

roomba 13 sailboat

Above is my monster of a shop vacuum that I use for all the tough messes, but it does have its drawbacks, and I cover what I use instead to clean most boats.

Shop Vacuums

Now that we know a shop vacuum is the best vacuum cleaner for any boat, it now brings up the question of which shop vacuum should you get?

There are two types of shop vacuums, a corded and cordless version.

The best overall shop vacuum will be from the cordless options, but if you need a lot of power, then the corded is the way to go. I, personally, use a cordless shop vacuum for cleaning the boat, as it’s easier to get in and out of the boat with it and I can still suck up watery messes.

I have a guide here on the best shop vacuums that will work very well for cleaning a boat. You may come to find out that a shop vacuum can do more than clean your boats, I have one I use for cleaning my gutters .

To make it easy, I’m going to list off the best cordless shop vacuums I found for cleaning boats.

  • Milwaukee 18V Cordless Lithium-Ion 2 Gallon Wet/Dry Vacuum (Amazon Link Ad).
  • DEWALT 20V MAX Cordless Wet-Dry Vacuum (Amazon Link Ad).
  • BAUER 20V Cordless 3-1/2 Gallon Wet/Dry Vacuum .
  • CRAFTSMAN V20* Cordless, 2 Gallon, Wet/Dry (Amazon Link Ad).

Note: Most cordless shop vacuum don’t come with a battery or charger, so you’ll need to get one. This is normal as most people often already have these tools that use a similar battery, but if you don’t, it would be a good idea to pick one out, as it’s always a good idea to have a drill and similar tools for your boat.

Of all the options, I own the Bauer cordless shop vacuum because I already have the batteries, but when I got to use the Milwaukee it was slightly nicer, but not enough for me to swap brands. Any of the listed shop vacuums will be more than fine and way better than most household vacuum cleaners.

roomba 13 sailboat

Larger Boats / Yachts

Having a shop vacuum is a must for any boat owner, but if you have a larger boat, like a cruiser or yacht, you’ll need something else.

Larger boats are similar to homes, they have carpets and large floor plans that need to be cleaned like you would for a home. While many larger boats will have a plug for a vacuum cleaner, I suggest you get a cordless option.

Boats have a tight floor plan, even for larger ones, and having a cordless vacuum cleaner is the best way to handle cleaning the floors. It’s far quicker to get out and clean the mess then getting the cord out and finding a plug.

For the best cordless vacuum cleaner for larger boats, I’ve listed the ones I would use.

  • Shark SV1106 Navigator Freestyle (Amazon Link Ad).
  • SAMSUNG Jet 75 (Amazon Link Ad).
  • Hoover ONEPWR (Amazon Link Ad).

You can use a Roomba or other robot vacuums for cleaning the floors and carpets of a large boat.

Most robot vacuums can’t go up and down stairs , even the ones that are trying won’t be able to handle the tight stairs of most large boats. You will need to get a robot vacuum for every floor of your boat that you want it to clean, or manually move it.

A robot vacuum is not always ideal for cleaning every floor of your boat, you need to watch it and don’t put it on deck as the cliff sensors may not work on the white fiberglass of a boat, and the bright sun can confuse its IR sensors .

Since space is tight on a boat, even larger ones, you may want to avoid self-emptying options unless you can make a custom hide-a-way home for it .

The best robot vacuum for a large boat will be the iRobot Roomba j7+ (Amazon Link Ad), but other robot vacuums will work if space and different features are needed.

12-Volt Vacuums Suck

You can find and buy vacuum cleaners that run off the 12-volt plug in your boat, and honestly, they’re not that great.

Maybe if you need to clean a few spilled bits of Cheerios, but for any real mess like the slime and gunk that builds up on boats, or even broken glass and leaves, you need a shop vacuum.

The 12-volt plug of your boat doesn’t output enough power to do any real cleaning, and moreover, it’s draining your boat’s battery. I can’t recommend these silly car or 12-volt vacuum cleaners, they’re more of a joke than anything useful for the messes most boats come across.

Dyson makes some great vacuum cleaners, they even have one made for your cars and boats (Amazon Link Ad).

If all you’re cleaning is carpets, that don’t have any gunk or a real mess, a Dyson will be fine. Even other cheaper cordless vacuum cleaners made for homes will work too.

But from my experiences, when it comes to cleaning a boat, actually cleaning a boat , a shop vacuum is a must. You deal with wet messes, leaves, gunk and so many other nasty stuff that using a high-end vacuum cleaner is silly. There is no point in tearing up your nice vacuum cleaner when a shop vacuum will work better and be more affordable.

Simply put, a Dyson and most other regular vacuum cleaners will get destroyed cleaning a boat because of all the water and wet messes they’ll come in to contact with.

Ideally, every home should have a regular vacuum cleaner for the normal house messes, and a shop vacuum for everything else, you’ll be amazed at what all you can use a shop vacuum for .

iRobot Roomba i3+: Price and availability

Priced at $599.99, the iRobot Roomba i3+ is the least expensive robot vacuum with a self-emptying dock ( the Clean Base) in iRobot’s lineup. It’s also available without the Clean Base for $399.99. For $200 more, the iRobot Roomba i7+ with Clean Base adds custom mapping and room-specific cleaning. Should you decide to buy the self-emptying base later, it’s available for $249.99.

To keep the dust as far away from you as possible, the Clean Base uses disposable vacuum bags. One comes installed on the Clean Base and there’s an extra in the box. iRobot says one bag used with the Roomba i3+ will last approximately 60 days. Bags are available in packs of three for $15 on Amazon.com or $5 more on iRobot’s site.

iRobot Roomba i3+ review: Design

Tired of shiny black plastic bots? Then you’ll like the look of the iRobot Roomba i3. The first thing I noticed is the light grey outer circle on the top. It looks like woven fabric and I couldn’t wait to touch it. Spoiler alert: it’s plastic. But it’s textured so you can get a good grip on the bot when you need to pick it up. It’s complemented by the inner dark grey circle with the iRobot “R” logo in the center. Above that, there’s a large Clean button with smaller buttons for home and spot cleaning on either side. The Roomba i3 borrows the matte black found on the classy Roomba s9 to encase its sides.

iRobot Roomba i3+ review

At 13.26 inches, the iRobot Roomba i3 sits right between the 13-inch Roomba 675 and the 13.3-inch Roomba i7 . The Roomba i3 and the i7 are both 3.6 inches high, while the 675 is a tenth of an inch taller. While the Roomba i3 had no problem cleaning around my kitchen baseboards and travelling under a living room chair, it was too tall to attack the dust bunnies under my couch.

iRobot Roomba i3+ review

The underside of the iRobot Roomba i3 is almost identical to the Roomba i7. For starters, both robots share bright green accents. There are the bright and dark green rubber brushrolls between the wheels and a bright green hub on the white tri-spoke side wheel. A removable caster wheel sits at the front and a removable, washable dustbin at the rear. Upon closer look, the Roomba i3 has fewer sensors around its edges than the Roomba i7. Still, the two vacuums are so similar that they share replacement parts including the brushrolls, side brush, and filter.

iRobot Roomba i3+ review

The wide V-pattern on each roller points away from the other, presumably to draw more debris inward when spinning. Upon closer inspection, I noticed the dark green roller brush has been updated to more closely resemble the light green one. The early version of the Roomba i7+ we tested had a roller with deeper fins, which tended to get long hair wrapped around it more easily.

iRobot Roomba i3+ review: Self-empyting base

iRobot calls its auto-emptying dock the Clean Base, though there are technically two different models: one for its i- series of bots and one for its s- series. The big difference between the two is the placement of the dustbin port on the bottom of the base.

The Clean Base accompanying the Roomba i3 is matte black with a subtle, thin shiny black strip around the upper half. There’s no chance of missing the Clean Base as it’s 19 inches high, 12.2 inches wide and 15.1 inches deep. Though large, the convenience of it is hard to beat.

iRobot says the disposable vacuum bag inside the base traps 99% of pollen and mold. When you remove the bag from the base, a small plastic door slides up to cover the bag opening. As an allergy sufferer who frequently deals with dust (usually while reviewing robot vacuums), I’m a big fan of auto-emptying bases — particularly the iRobot and Ecovacs models that use disposable bags.

That being said, you probably don’t want to run the Clean Base when people are sleeping. It’s loud. Think tuned-up sports motorcycle at 10,000 rpm loud. Thankfully, it only runs for about 14 seconds. That’s long enough to clean out the onboard dustbin each time, leaving only minimal dust residue in the dustbin.

iRobot Roomba i3+ review: Setup and mapping

Connecting the Roomba i3 to the iRobot Home app ( Android and iOS ) was relatively easy, but not as smooth as my experience with other iRobot devices. I followed the onscreen prompts on my iPhone 11 Pro, but the app seemed to get stuck at the “Connecting to Wi-Fi… This could take a few minutes.” screen. The odd part was that the Roomba i3 cheerfully announced that it successfully connected to Wi-Fi long before the app caught up. It was long enough that I thought something had gone wrong. It hadn’t. So while the screen was correct — it did take a few minutes — I haven’t experienced a robot declaring itself ready so long before an app.

Once connected, the $200 price difference between the Roomba i3 and the Roomba s9 and Roomba i7 becomes more evident. The Roomba i3 will generate a map of where it’s cleaned, but, unlike the Roomba i7, Roomba s9, and Roborock S4 Max, you’re not able to save and edit maps of your home. It’s most like the Neato D4 in this way. It’ll show you where it’s been, but you can’t tell it where to go. As a result, there’s no option for room-specific cleaning or area divisions. Nor is there an option for no-go zones or virtual walls. At least the Neato D4 includes those. If you want a virtual wall for the Roomba i3, you’ll have to spring for the $59 Virtual Wall from iRobot.

Roomba i3+ review

While the Roomba i3 doesn’t save maps, you can view a history of where the bot has cleaned. It was helpful to see where the vacuum travelled and where it didn’t quite reach — like in the maze of chair legs under my dining room table. Still, I preferred being able to identify rooms and choosing the order in which I wanted them cleaned using the similarly-priced Roborock S4 Max.

The map will also show where the Roomba i3 detected more dirt and spent more time cleaning, which isn’t an option with the Roborock S4 Max . The i3 correctly detected where I left a small line of breadcrumbs as an area that needed more work. While the i3 didn’t spin in a furious circle to attack the dried bread like the Roomba 675 , it did pick them all up.

iRobot Roomba i3+ review: App

The iRobot Home app was recently revamped and now includes “Favorites” for customized cleaning runs. Since there aren’t any custom cleaning options for the Roomba i3, it’s not currently possible to create any favorite options aside from the default, “Vacuum Everywhere.” However, there is a splash screen when you try to add a new Favorite that says it’s coming soon and promises options for different time durations.

The app does allow you to schedule the Roomba i3 to run almost as often as you’d like — even multiple times a day. If that’s too much work, the app integrates with other smart home devices, like the August smart lock, the Ecobee smart thermostat, or Leviton smart power switches. The bot can be triggered to start cleaning when you leave home and stop cleaning when you return. Can’t find your phone? Order the Roomba i3 around via Alexa or Google Assistant .

Like its more expensive siblings, the Roomba i3 has iRobot’s Imprint Link technology, which means it’s able to connect with the Braava jet m6 mopping robot. When set up in the app, the Braava jet m6 will begin cleaning once the i3 has completed its job. It worked seamlessly and quickly. Almost as soon as the i3 had docked and emptied its bin, the Braava jet m6 was off of its dock and going to work.

iRobot Roomba i3+ review: Cleaning performance

Remember sophomore year of high school when you bombed your chemistry final and it brought your entire GPA down? The iRobot Roomba i3’s lab test results feel a lot like that. Though it earned impressive marks on nearly every debris test we threw at it, the Roomba i3 was not good at picking up dog hair on carpet. How bad was it? The Roomba i3 earned an overall average pick up rate of 90.12. If we dropped the dog-hair-on-carpet score, its overall score would be 96.54. Unfortunately, this isn’t high school.

iRobot Roomba i3+ review

On the plus side, the iRobot Roomba i3 earned a perfect 100% average picking up Cheerios cereal on both hardwood and carpet, a feat only matched by the Shark Ion R85 . The Roomba i7, which is similar to the Roomba i3 picked up an average of 93.1% of cereal on hardwood and carpet.

The Roomba i3 travels in mostly orderly rows while it cleans, though sometimes I struggled to see the method in its cleaning logic. In our square test area, it had a tendency to take off on a diagonal path before returning to its serpentine lines. Unlike the Roborock S4 Max, it didn’t fully outline an area before filling it in, like a child coloring neatly. However, the Roomba i3 got the cleaning job done, particularly on our hardwood test, where it trounced big brother Roomba i7 on all three tests. In addition picking up 100% of the cereal strewn on the floor, it bested the Roomba i7’s pickup rate by 2 points and its pet hair pick up rate by 5 points. Only the Roborock S4 Max performed better on the litter and hair tests. However, both the Roomba i3 and the S4 Max collected a fair amount of hair around their brushrolls.

Despite the Roomba i3’s struggle with dog hair on carpet, it performed well on the other two tests, earning a perfect 100 for picking up cereal and an admirable 94% pick up rate for kitty litter. It was once again several points better than the Roomba i7 (87.3) and just one point below the Roborock S4 Max.

But that 58% dog hair pick up rate. Woof. The result was surprising enough that we re-ran the test three times. Each time, the Roomba i3 picked up a similar amount of hair. The Ecovacs Deebot Ozmo T8 also earned a 58 on the same test, but it had a similar score of 57.5 on hardwood for pet hair. If you have lots of pet hair and lots of carpet, you should probably consider a different bot.

Overall, the Roomba i3 was a strong performer in our tests, but it was a bit loud. I found myself turning up the TV volume to hear Schitt’s Creek over the vacuum’s din. While the Roomba i3 is not quite as loud as the Roomba s9, the Roborock S4 Max is noticeably quieter.

iRobot Roomba i3+ review: Verdict

Despite a few hiccups, we recommend the iRobot Roomba i3+ robot vacuum. The auto-emptying Clean Base is a mechanical miracle for those with allergies. And, at $599, it’s the most affordable Roomba with this feature. The vacuum itself is a decent performer and thorough whole floor cleaner.  Should you spend $200 more for the older Roomba i7+ with Clean Base? If single room cleaning and mapping is important to you, then yes. If a self-emptying base isn’t important to you, check out $429 Roborock S4 Max. It’s a top performer and offers saved maps and room-specific cleaning.

Cargo ship-scrubbing HullSkater robot is like a Roomba for the high seas

By far the most common robot most of us come into contact with is the vacuuming Roomba robot , designed to scour our carpets hoovering up dust, dirt, and assorted other debris. A new robotic creation called HullSkater does something a bit similar — only instead of vacuuming the carpet in our apartment, it travels around on the outside of large cargo ships, cleaning the “biofilm” of algae and assorted microorganisms which attach to the hulls of these vessels as they sail the high seas.

The HullSkater sticks onto the hull of ships using magnetic wheels, which are equipped with electric motors for carrying out the propulsion and steering. It has multiple sensors and on-board cameras to carry out its navigation, alongside motorized brushes for carrying out the cleaning process. Cleaning a hull takes between two and eight hours depending on its size and condition. The robot can be used to remotely clean vessels anywhere in the world so long as there is 4G connectivity coverage.

This isn’t just about keeping cargo ships looking swanky and new, however. This motorized cleaning robot is designed to protect hulls against erosion and damage that result from the “fouling” products that adhere to them. Amazingly, despite the comparatively thin layer of biofilm that accumulates on vessels, this can have a noticeable impact on the ship’s efficiency; meaning that it requires more energy to move.

  • Dog-like Spot robot gets a gig to scare wildlife
  • The iRobot Genius 4.0 update makes Roombas even smarter
  • The iRobot Roomba j7+ monitors your floors to avoid wires, pet droppings

This, in turn, has an environmental impact, which technology like the HullSkater could be used to help fight. Since massive cargo ships are huge polluters in terms of the amount of carbon dioxide they throw out, reducing this quantity would have an enormous impact. According to a report by Fast Company , over five years a single ship using a HullSkater robot could cut 22,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions. That’s around 12.5% of the ship’s total emissions.

HullSkater is the work of Jotun, a world-leading provider of marine coatings, and Swedish technology consulting company Semcon. The robot has been tested on boats around the world, and is now ready to come to market. Will this become the Roomba of the oceans? We’ll have to wait and see. It certainly looks promising, though.

The classic 1987 movie RoboCop is said to be set roughly 20 years from now, but it looks like 2021 will be the beginning of the era of robotic law enforcement. A growing number of police departments around the country are purchasing robots for police work, and as this behavior becomes normalized, major concerns are starting to arise.

The NYPD purchased a robot dog earlier this year that is apparently capable of opening doors. The same kind of robot police dog has been tested out by the Massachusetts State Police. The use of drones by police departments has skyrocketed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Police departments around the country have purchased the weeble-wobble-looking robot Knightscope robot that apparently enjoys running over children's feet and ignoring people who need help.

If you’ve ever used a robot vacuum before, you might have found yourself wishing it spent more time on a specific area. Some iRobot Roomba devices have built-in dirt sensors to help them know where to focus, but now that capability has been improved even more. On Monday, August 24, iRobot unveiled the iRobot Genius Home Intelligence platform. This suite of features gives users never-before-seen levels of personalization, control over the iRobot devices, and much more.

This takes place in a redesigned iRobot Home app. iRobot improved on the app in numerous ways to create a sort of command center for all of the user’s iRobot products. The app not only gives more granular control of your devices, but it also breaks down the performance of your cleaning devices.

The Complete Buying Guide to iRobot Roombas: Every Model Explained

Only one robot vacuum gets to be called Roomba. Whether you have pets or don’t want to empty the dust bin, these are all the Roomba models available.

Editor’s note: Roomba’s Cyber Monday sale is going on now, with up to $400 off robot vacuums! Check out the savings here , and go here for more deals on cleaning, cookware, furniture and more.

There’s only one Roomba out there, and it’s made by iRobot. The brand’s dominance in the early days of robot vacuuming was so complete its name went the way of Kleenex and Rollerblade — a shorthand generic trademark for entire industries.

a roomba vacuum cleaner on a wood floor next to a pair of shoes and socks

Founded in 1990 by a trio of Massachusetts Institute of Technology roboticists, iRobot started with the Genghis, an insect-like robot designed for space exploration. Richard Brooks, the designer of the Genghis, and one of the founders of iRobot, wanted to build a robot that could intuitively respond to its environment. As Brooks wrote in the Journal of The British Interplanetary Society, self-learning robots are more effective than humans and could complete missions, like chores, more efficiently.

For a device with a seemingly simple task — roll around the floor and suck up dirt, dust and hair — there are a lot of Roombas to choose from. We broke down each series and model to hopefully help you make a better, more informed purchase from the leading brand in robo-vacuums.

Editor’s Note: Many of the following lines and models have been either discontinued or depreciated (no longer promoted, but available at other retailers), but in an attempt to provide you with the most buying options, we have still included them in this guide provided that they are available to purchase new from trusted retailers.

  • Key Features: Three-step cleaning system, Cliff Detect stair avoidance, WiFi connectivity and app/voice control

The 694 is the only 6-series vacuum currently being offered by iRobot on its website — making it the cheapest non-depreciated model in today’s Roomba lineup. And looking at the vac, you’d be hard-pressed to find any differences at all between this model and the 675, as they both offer the same cleaning tech and the same WiFi-connected Roomba OS capabilities. The main difference between the two is their aesthetics, as the 694 is much sleeker-looking and is more in line with iRobot’s other current Roombas — hence why they’re still offering the 694 online.

The i3 was one of the first generations of Roombas to have been equipped with iRobot OS, a state-of-the-art operating system that allows for features like advanced obstacle detection and smart mapping, along with automatic over-the-air updates via WiFi. It offers ten times the suction power of base models and features Dirt Detect technology that allows it to give extra focus to filthier areas.

Roomba i3+

  • $405.00 at Amazon $549.99 (26% off)
  • Year Released: 2020 (depreciated)
  • Key Features: 10x suction power, smart mapping, iRobot OS automatic updates, automatic emptying

The i3+ is the same robot as the i3, but it includes in its price Roomba’s Clean Base automatic emptying system. After the robot docks, it empties itself, and you’ll only have to empty the bin once every two months or so rather than every time you vacuum.

Roomba i7

  • $402.00 at Amazon $435.99 (8% off)
  • Year Released: 2018 (depreciated)

The i7 has since been put on the back burner in favor of the more affordable i3, which was released at the same time. The biggest difference between the two is the i7 has more advanced sensors, making it better at obstacle avoidance and smart mapping. Users can also create “Keep Out Zones” to prevent the i7 from buzzing through specific areas (like a thicket of cables). Plus, if you have the Roomba’s smart wet mopping robot, the Braava m6 , you can program the device to automatically power on after the Roomba is finished.

Roomba i7+

  • $575.00 at Amazon $799.99 (28% off)

Again, the addition of a plus to the i7 means you’re getting iRobot’s Clean Base auto-emptying dock, which allows the i7 to empty its own dustbin. If you vacuum every day, the dock can hold up to 60 days worth of dirt. Dirt disposal bags cost anywhere between $15 to $20 for a three-pack.

irobot roomba

  • $342.00 at Amazon $599.99 (43% off)
  • Year Released: 2021 (depreciated)
  • Key Features: 10x suction power, pet waste detection, advanced obstacle avoidance, iRobot OS automatic updates

If you’re looking to lose your lunch today, go to YouTube and look for “Roomba pet poop.” (Just kidding. Don’t do it, and take our word for it.) Roombas and other robot vacuums have long been notorious for running straight into pet droppings and spreading them around the home. The j7 avoids this by using PrecisionVision Navigation to avoid obstacles in its way, specifically pet waste, to the point where Roomba even guarantees that the model will successfully avoid any pet waste for a year through their P.O.O.P. (Pet Owner Official Promise) guarantee.

Over time, the robo vac will learn what parts of your home need more cleaning and what floor obstacles to avoid. The j7 also has features like Clean While I’m Away, which uses your phone’s location services to determine when you’ve left your home so it can start cleaning; Quiet Drive, which makes the vacuum as quiet as possible when you need some cleaning but also some quiet time; and Cleaning Time Estimates, to give you a ballpark estimate of how long a cleaning session will take.

Roomba j7+

  • $555.00 at Amazon
  • Key Features: 10x suction power, pet waste detection, obstacle avoidance, iRobot OS automatic updates, automatic emptying

Like the i7+ further up the list, the “+” here indicates the inclusion of the Clean Base Automatic Dirt Disposal dock that keeps you from having to empty the j7 yourself every time you use it.

roomba vacuum cleaner

  • $599.99 at irobot.com $999.99 (40% off)
  • Year Released: 2023
  • Key Features: 10x suction power, pet waste detection, advanced obstacle avoidance, iRobot OS automatic updates, automatic emptying, Dirt Detective dirt detection

Roomba’s current top-of-the-line standalone robot vacuum, the j9+ features all of the brand’s most advanced features. It has an auto-emptying Clean Base, advanced obstacle detection, automatic updates of iRobot OS and a new Dirt Detective feature that scans your home and prioritizes cleaning the dirtiest areas first. Roomba also says its the brand’s best vacuum at cleaning entrenched dirt and pet hair.

Roomba S9

  • $999.99 at Amazon
  • Year Released: 2019 (discontinued)
  • Key Features: 40x suction power, Power Boost, extra-wide brushes, corner cleaning, iRobot OS automatic updates

The Roomba s9 is still Roomba’s most powerful vacuum, boasting 40 times the suction of the 614, with 40 percent wider brushes and double the runtime. A special five-armed corner brush reaches dirt stuck in corners, brushing it towards the vacuum’s suction. The s9 was also the first Roomba to employ Power Boost Technology, which automatically increases suction when vacuuming over carpet. It’s also shaped differently than other Roombas — it isn’t round — which is designed to better clean edges.

roomba s9

  • $755.84 at Amazon $999.99 (24% off)
  • Year Released: 2019
  • Key Features: 40x suction power, Power Boost, extra-wide brushes, corner cleaning, iRobot OS automatic updates, automatic emptying

It’s the s9, but not discontinued and with the addition of Roomba’s Clean Base automatic dirt disposal dock.

Combo Series

Roomba combo i5 & i5+.

roomba vacuum cleaner

  • $349.99 at irobot.com $799.99 (56% off)
  • Key Features: 10x suction power, swappable mop, voice control through virtual assistants, room mapping, automatic emptying (on i5+)

Roomba’s new entry-level vacuum and mop combo is closer to 2-in-1 units you see from competing brands. Rather than featuring an integrated mop that senses your carpets and moves out of the way, this Roomba requires you to swap in a separate bin when mopping — meaning you’ll need to move any rugs out of the way when it’s time to mop. It’s still a Roomba though, so you’re getting things like WiFi-enabled room mapping and voice control through your preferred virtual assistant. It’s available in both standard and plus versions, with the difference being the inclusion of an auto-emptying docking base on the latter.

Roomba Combo j5 & j5+

roomba vacuum cleaner

  • $42.00 at irobot.com $799.99 (95% off)
  • Key Features: 10x suction power, swappable mop, voice control through virtual assistants, room mapping, pet waste detection, advanced obstacle avoidance, automatic emptying (on j5+)

An upgrade over the Combo i5 and i5+, the only real difference here — outside of a slightly more high-end look — is the presence of Roomba’s advanced obstacle avoidance, which is capable of recognizing and avoiding many different common obstacles, like cords and pet waste. Like the Combo i5, it’s available with or without an auto-emptying Clean Base.

Roomba Combo j7+

irobot roomba

  • $698.99 at Amazon $1,099.99 (36% off)
  • Year Released: 2022
  • Key Features: 10x suction power, auto-lifting mop, voice control through virtual assistants, room mapping, pet waste detection, advanced obstacle avoidance, iRobot OS automatic updates, automatic emptying

The Combo j7+ was Roomba’s first vacuum-mop combo, and while we’ve seen these types of devices before from other brands, there are a few things about Roomba’s effort that are notable. First and foremost is the mop pad, which retracts onto the top of the Roomba itself whenever the robot senses a rug or carpet, thus preventing the device from dragging a wet pad across a surface that it might damage. It also vacuums and mops simultaneously, and there’s no human interaction needed to switch between the two once you load up its tank with water and cleaning solution. The Combo j7+ also brings you everything you get in the mop-free j7+, including smart pet waste avoidance, automatic dirt disposal, Clean While I’m Away and more.

roomba combo™ j9 robot vacuum and mop

  • $999.99 at irobot.com $1,399.99 (29% off)
  • Key Features: 10x suction power, auto-lifting mop, voice control through virtual assistants, room mapping, pet waste detection, advanced obstacle avoidance, iRobot OS automatic updates, automatic emptying, Dirt Detective dirt detection, auto-fill mop, SmartScrub mopping

Roomba’s latest flagship costs a not-insignificant $400 more than the Combo j7+, but it solves pretty much all of the major issues of that vacuum. Its docking base is quieter when emptying (the Combo j7+ is almost comically loud), and it also fills the mop automatically for seven days, making this the most hands-free Roomba ever. It also boasts SmartScrub mopping, making it twice as effective at wet-cleaning messes, and the new Dirt Detective feature.

How to Pick a Roomba

If all robot vacuums were the same, then there would simply be one Roomba model that would suit everyone. But, as you can see from the plethora of models on offer, that isn’t the case. There are a few factors that should be considered before purchasing your Roomba, which are laid out below.

Living Space

The size of your space, along with the type of flooring you have and the amount of furniture you’ve got, all play a role in choosing a Roomba. Different classes of Roomba are capable of mapping and cleaning differently-sized areas, so if you’ve got a huge home to clean, you’ll want to be sure and get a Roomba that has both the mapping capabilities and battery life to handle it. All current Roombas are capable of cleaning both carpeted and hardwood floors and transitioning between them, but some do so better than others. If you’ve got high-pile rugs, for instance, you’ll want something with greater suction power that’s capable of lifting dirt from deep in the rug. Finally, if your space is cluttered with furniture and other obstacles, you’ll probably want a Roomba with smart mapping and obstacle avoidance since it will learn your space, know where to go and ultimately clean more efficiently.

One of the best reasons to get a Roomba is if you have a pet, as their automatic cleaning makes picking up after your shed-happy friends much easier than if you had to do it on your own. But some Roombas are specially designed for pet owners. You’ll want to look for features like obstacle detection that’s tailored to recognizing and avoiding pet waste, along with brushes that are designed for picking up pet hair without getting tangled.

Convenience Level

Generally speaking, the more expensive a Roomba is, the less work it will require from you to get it to clean your home. The most advanced Roombas feature WiFi connectivity so you can control them from your phone or through a virtual assistant like Alexa, smart mapping and obstacle avoidance so they’ll find their way around your home without you having to intervene to pull out an untangled wire and self-emptying bins that keep you from getting your hands dirty — literally. Some even feature built-in mops that you don’t have to manually change out; they can sense rugs and move themselves out of harm’s way when they encounter one.

"...] App-controlled, schedule setting and map updating all autonomously , makes having this device a no-brainer for a two-cat apartment...." Read more

"...pieces of furniture, I'd notice it not working well, or failing to update the map any after a run, and wiped my entire floorplan map multiple times...." Read more

"...It maps your house very thoroughly and gives you information on how much dirt is in whatever location. This is like the terminator of robot vacuums...." Read more

"...It also updated the map in the app and asked me about the new room and what to name it...." Read more

Customers have mixed opinions about the battery life of the robotic vacuum cleaner. Some mention it has incredibly long battery life, while others say it stops for over a minute, then starts again for a while. They also say it turns off every few minutes, gets stuck, and shuts down over and over on items. Some customers have reported that the robot stops in various places and has to be rebooted daily.

"...It is able to vacuum my entire house on one charge. Run time seems a bit long (2 hrs) but that may improve as it learns more about my house...." Read more

"...The battery life means it can do your entire space on one charge and have room to continue...." Read more

"...It cleans better than my previous 2 vacuums. It takes a bit longer than previous ones but that is not so important...." Read more

"...But then at the same time sacrificing battery life ...." Read more

Customers have mixed opinions about the emptiness level of the robotic vacuum cleaner. Some mention it cleans where they asked it to, while others say it has an issue emptying the bin.

"...And the self emptying dock with replaceable HEPA bags means all that cat fur and related dander is sucked up and disposed of, not leaving any behind..." Read more

"...it won’t clean but about half of my house (open floor plan), it won’t empty the bin it tells me it’s dirty when it’s not, it leaves trail of dirt..." Read more

"...The battery life is incredibly long and its ability to empty its bin by itself is nice...." Read more

"...It vacuums it up fine, but it has an issue emptying it ...." Read more

Customers are dissatisfied with the value for money of the robotic vacuum cleaner. They mention it's a disappointing waste of money, not acceptable at this price point, and the brush/rollers used are rather useless at picking up dust. Customers also say the app wastes their time by asking them to label images and clean dust bins.

"...the new Dyson Vis Nav but it’s currently unavailable and the price is astronomical . That got me looking at Roomba...." Read more

"...My only complaint at this early stage is the cost of the filter within the robot itself. That needs to be kept clean or strange things happen...." Read more

"...that illusory help with day to day life evaporated into a very expensive hunk of plastic that seems to only want to waltz in the middle of a room..." Read more

"...I have add a couple of them around the house. This thing is worth every penny ." Read more

Boat malfunction throws two men overboard on Mozhaisk Reservoir, Moscow Oblast

Posted: September 19, 2024 | Last updated: September 20, 2024

On September 9, 2024, an inflatable boat malfunctioned on the Mozhaisk Reservoir in Moscow Oblast, Russia, throwing two men overboard. The boat's faulty motor caused it to move erratically and rapidly, circling the water in what witnesses described as a "crazy dance." Fishermen nearby rescued the men and managed to control the boat by throwing a rope onto its propeller and towing it away.
