What To Look For When Buying Moscow Mule Mugs?

The Moscow Mule is traditionally served in a solid copper mug. But it is sometimes served in a highball or cocktail glass on rare occasions. Copper mugs are preferred by many fans of this drink, who believe that the classic cocktail tastes better when served in its traditional vessel.

The Moscow Mule recipe, like the authentic moscow mule mugs, has evolved. Today, there are numerous recipe variations and copper mug styles to choose from. Some options are solid unlined copper mugs, but others are copper-plated or lined.

Read on to learn more about these different types of Moscow mule mugs and how to choose one that best suits your needs!

Things to Consider When You Buy Moscow Mule Copper Mugs

When searching for a Moscow mule mug, it can be difficult to narrow down your options because they all look similar. But we have outlined some of the most important qualities to help make your decision easier.

Material

The materials are the first thing to consider when purchasing a Moscow Mule mug. When it comes to copper, there are both low-gauge and high-gauge options. Low-gauge copper mugs are thicker and heavier, whereas high-gauge mugs are thinner.

Most pure copper mugs are safe to drink due to food-grade lacquer coatings. However, lined mugs give an extra layer of safety, adding to the strength and longevity of copper-plated mugs. Below is a full explanation to help you decide which material to choose.

Why Choose Unlined Mugs?

High-quality copper mugs have the distinction of being the most conductive of all copper cup variations. They keep your drinks arctic cold and transfer that crisp icy feeling to your hands and lips beautifully since they are made of 100% solid copper with no interior lining.

No wonder they generated quite a stir when the Moscow Mule first appeared in the 1940s Los Angeles scene. There is absolutely no better temperature conductor than a traditional moscow mule mug made of copper.

Requires Proper Care

When pure copper is exposed to liquids and moisture in the air, it produces a rich patina. In other words, it deteriorates. This may be avoided by washing and drying the cups immediately after use.

Even so, some spots may form everywhere. While these blemishes are simple to remove, only some are ready to put in the time and effort. And only some people are aware of this copper property.

Why Choose Lined Copper Mugs?

When looking for a beautiful copper Moscow Mule mug, you might be surprised that some come with a tin lining while most do not. The reason is that lined mugs are made from a variety of materials. Additionally, some people prefer lined mugs over unlined because for these two reasons:

Personal Preference

Although a large body of scientific research indicates that drinking from an unlined solid copper mug has no health risk, some prefer a liner between the copper and their drink. It all comes down to a simple matter of personal preference in this scenario.

Copper is soft, which means it can dent if you drop a mug from the counter to the floor. While dents can usually be repaired with little effort, some people prefer the look of an aged copper mug. A tin or nickel lining will add structural support, making the cup more durable in the kitchen or bar.

Kinds of Lined Copper Mugs

Nickel is well known as a metal used in coins. However, it has a long history of use as an alloy metal in domestic items such as faucets and steel cookware.

Nickel is a lining material in Mule mugs to keep copper from leaching into drinks. It is also a good temperature conductor, so that you will lose little of the sweaty atmosphere of a copper mug with a nickel liner. However, some people are allergic to nickel, so if copper does not bother you, nickel might.

A copper mug with a stainless steel lining is an attractive, durable option. However, the biggest disadvantage of using stainless steel to line a copper cup is its poor thermal conductivity. It is, in fact, the worst of all metals regularly used today.

While this metal is great at keeping the copper mug from getting cold, it also means that the outside of the mug never gets cold and doesn't give the desired icy-cold effect or condensation droplets. Because The Mule's image is so important, removing that dripping mug is a bummer for some.

Tin has the same properties as copper: both are excellent thermal conductors. Using a tin-lined mug will sweat like pure copper and have the same cold feeling that most Mule drinkers prefer. Tin is also non-toxic and does not leach into drinks, so drinking from tin-lined cups is safe.

Hence, with this alternative, you get the aesthetic attractiveness of pure copper without the risk of metal leaching. Tin is the recommended lining metal for copper Moscow Mule mugs.

Finish

When looking for a copper mug, select one with a food lacquer or finish to prevent any harmful leaching into your drink.

Size / Capacity

When you drink a Moscow Mule out of a copper mule mug, you want to make sure the mug is big enough to hold your drink without leaving the extra room. The traditional recipe for this cocktail requires the following ingredients:

  • 1/4 oz. Lime juice (one lime wedge squeezed)
  • 2 oz. Vodka
  • 4 to 6 oz. Ginger beer

Now, the right amount of each ingredient and ice will make a Moscow Mule taste just right. Your solid copper mug should be big enough to hold the standard ingredients and ice to make a Moscow Mule that stays true to its roots.

A Moscow Mule requires 14 to 16 ounces of space in a copper mug, including the ice. The perfect mug holds between 16 and 20 ounces of liquid.

Sturdy Handle

Copper Moscow mule mugs are known for keeping drinks cold, making them ideal for keeping your hands cold. To avoid chilling your hands, choose mugs with welded handles.

Moscow mule mugs are available in a variety of styles and shapes. Some mugs have textured and dented surfaces, while others are considerably plainer. There is much to select from, so choose something that matches your taste and flair.

Ease of Cleaning

You probably won't find a Moscow Mule mug that can go into the dishwasher. Almost all pure copper and lacquered mugs should be hand-washed to preserve their finish .

Price and Warranty

In addition to looking at the product's build quality and aesthetics, you should check to see if it includes a money-back guarantee. This ensures that the seller is confident in their goods and not just peddling low-quality mugs for a quick buck. Not only that, but think about how much money you have before making any purchases.

Included Bar Tools & Accessories

You can purchase a single copper mug, though most will come in two, four, six, or more sets. Moscow Mule mug sets are more likely to include extras like a shot glass , reusable straws, coasters, and even handy recipe books.

Reliable Seller

Although Moscow mule mugs are widely available, you should only purchase them from trusted sellers. It is a good idea to read reviews about the seller and the company before purchasing to avoid disappointment.

Buying Moscow Mule Mugs FAQ

How do you pick a moscow mule mug.

When buying a Moscow Mule mug, you first want to consider the quality of the product. The mug should be 100% copper and pass all applicable food safety tests. So, invest in a copper mug to maintain the ideal temperature for your cocktails.

What is the best material for a Moscow Mule mug?

Copper mugs are the traditional vessels for drinking mules. Copper helps keep the drink at an ideal temperature for maximum flavor expression.

What is so special about Moscow Mule mugs?

The copper mug, which acts as an insulator for ginger beer, helps keep the Moscow Mule drink cold. Some experts claim the Moscow Mule tastes better in a copper mug than any other cocktail glass.

Why are Moscow Mule mugs hammered?

The original copper cups are handcrafted with a hammered finish, providing greater heat transfer and airflow around the liquid. This improves flavor and keeps your drink at the right temperature.

What size should a Moscow Mule mug be?

The proper Moscow Mule is served in a sturdy copper mug with enough room for the standard ingredients and ice to create a well-balanced cocktail. The average mule requires 14–16 ounces of liquid in a copper mug, not including the ice. Between 16 and 20 ounces is the sweet spot for cup size.

It's important to feel good about your purchase, so make sure that you take your time shopping around before buying a Moscule Mule mug. That way, you'll end up with the one that keeps your beverages icy cold, impresses friends and family, and adorns your home bar as elegantly as possible.

Traditional Craftsmanship

ABOUT MOSCOW COPPER

We believe that beautifully made barware isn’t a thing of the past. We’ve brought back the Moscow Mule mugs in their traditional state, the same way they were in 1941, when our founder’s great-grandmother, Sophie Berezinski , arrived in America with a dream—and a uniquely designed copper mug made for her by her coppersmith father.

We honor that spirit of entrepreneurship and craftsmanship by making pure copper mugs with heavy gauge handles and old-world quality. So mix up your favorite Moscow Mule (or another refreshing cocktail) and raise a toast to good taste and superior ingredients.

Chess Queen® & 12th Women's World Chess Champion Grandmaster Mega-Site & Chess Blog

  • Muzychuk A.

Hello everybody!

I am Alexandra Kosteniuk, the 12th Women’s World Chess Champion. In this page I will give you some info about me and about my career, with photos, links and embedded videos.

Then let me show you my YouTube video of the championship when I was crowned Women’s World Chess Champion. As I’m writing this it’s at 67,000 views and counting. It’s the high point of my career to date, and I’m very proud of it.

I received the Woman Grandmaster (WGM) title in 1998, at the age of 14 and the International Master among men (IM) title in the year 2000. During the 2004 FIDE Congress in Calvia I was awarded the highest title of Grandmaster (Men), thus I became 10th woman in the whole history of chess who got this title.

In 2001, at the age of 17, to everybody’s surprise, I came in second at the Women’s World Championship in Moscow. After that, I became European Champion in 2004 and Russian Champion in 2005. My top chess rating is 2540. You can see my FIDE card at this link .

But let me start from the beginning. I was born in the Russian city of Perm on April 23, 1984. I have been living in Moscow since I was one year old. I then graduated from the Russian State Academy of Physical Education in July 2003 and am now a certified professional chess trainer. It’s my dad, Konstantin Vladimirovich – who taught me to play chess when I was 5 years old and I am very grateful to him for that.

I improved in chess rapidly. My first great achievements came in Junior tournaments. In 1994 I became the European Champion among girls under the age of 10, and a month later shared first and second places at the World Championship under the age of 10.

Later, I had the same major achievements in other age categories, for example I became World Champion of girls under 12, in 1996. In 1997, I became a Woman International Master (WIM) at the age of 13, they say that I reached this mark slightly quicker than Maya Chiburdanidze, but I don’t give much significance to that. I scored all necessary WGM norms in February of 1998 that is at the age of 13 years and 10 months but the Women’s Grand Master title was officially given to me in November 1998 at the 33rd World Olympiad in Kalmykia.

To promote chess, I’ve done fashion modelling, I’m sure you’ve seen the following photo before:

It’s from one of the photo shoots with well-known photographer Pierre-William Henry, have a look at the three photo series 2003 , 2004 , 2005 . I’ve been on the cover of over 100 magazines.

I have been also photographed by Zhenya Minkovich ( Vogue Fashion , Series 2003 ), Vladimir Maximov ( Marie-Claire Magazine ), Andrei Rozen ( Sokolniki ), Pufichek ( Beach 2006 , Beach 2009 ), Vladimir Shirokov ( ProSport ). Many more photos of me can be found on ChessPics , which is updated regularly. My “older” photos can be found on my pre-2005 photo album page .

I also have many other interests but chess, I write poems (some of them are published in my book), and I like sport in all its forms. I also love to do fashion modelling, and I even played a part in a movie, which by far was the most fun thing I have ever done in my life. My first book How I became Grandmaster at age 14 has been published already in three languages (Russian, English and Spanish). My dad and I have worked on it for almost two years, and I feel that its genre is very original. It is a manual in which I teach to play chess and at the same time I tell how I learned to play chess starting from the age of 5. The book contains many annotated games and pictures, including color ones. I hope that it won’t disappoint you. I think that many parents could purchase it as a present for their children. Perhaps not everyone who reads it will become a Grandmaster at the age of 14, but many readers will learn to play this most intelligent and most beautiful game in the world.

I am eager to hear your feedback and suggestions concerning my site. I have tried to gather as many as possible articles that have come out about me and the work I do to try to promote chess in the world.
I am most grateful to everybody who orders something at my web-shop , or makes a donation (even the most modest is greatly appreciated) to my Chess Foundation. Thanks to your help I can give free simuls to children, give away my books and other presents to them to show them how wonderful chess is, and need your help to do even more. All donations go exclusively to promoting chess and for gifts, so please if you can afford to help, do it now!

The 8 Best Moscow Mule Mugs

The key "ingredient" to keeping this favorite cocktail ice-cold.

yachtscoring queen's cup

Liquor / Chloe Jeong

The Moscow Mule is a classic cocktail that just requires vodka, ginger beer, and lime juice. However, there's also another key ingredient to the drink: a decent copper mug. Copper helps take on the temperature of the drink, keeping your Moscow Mule cold during those hot summer days. The traditional mug is 100 percent copper, with a round bowl and hammered finish, but a few brands have updated the mug with more modern looks and untraditional finishes.

We researched and tested the best Moscow Mule mugs on the market, looking at their material and whether the mug is lined, as well as the strength of the handle and how easy they are to clean. From classic sets to personalized mugs, there are a variety of options to choose from.

Best Overall

Cocktail kingdom engraved moscow mule mug.

100 percent copper

Cute design

Only 12 ounces

“I like Cocktail Kingdom's Mule mugs because they are coated with a food-safe finish that prevents direct copper contact and prolongs the aesthetic life of the mug,” says Nick Touch, a bartender at Denver’s The Family Jones .

Each of the brand’s mugs is made with 100 percent copper and is engraved with a cheeky donkey logo, which is a reproduction of the original 1946 Moscow Mule mug. “In general, Cocktail Kingdom is an all-around great source for all your home barware needs,” says Touch.

Our tester found these mugs retained their chill well and had a nice thin rim, similar to what you’d like from a craft cocktail glass. It’s the perfect vessel for Moscow Mules, Mint Juleps , and any other crushed-ice concoction.

Material: Copper | Capacity: 12 ounces | Number in Set: 1 | Dishwasher Safe: No

Good to Know:

When making a Moscow Mule, Touch has a few pointers: "If you want to get crafty with it, try adding a strawberry puree or syrup to the mix, or brighten it up with some fresh herbs such as mint or basil.”

Best Solid Copper

Sertodo copper copper moscow mule mug.

Large volume

Comfortable handle

Each of Sertodo's mugs is carefully crafted by a team of artisans (led by founder Jonathan Beall) at the brand’s workshops in Austin or Michoacán, Mexico. They are pricey, but handmade from 100 percent pure copper and can hold a generous 18 ounces of liquid. As each mug is made by a master craftsman, the hammering pattern will differ with every product for a unique touch. Even more, the handles are carefully welded on for maximum durability and are roomy enough for almost your entire hand to hold comfortably.

Our tester loved how well the copper retained a chill, even against the heat of a hand.

This particular option skips the rounded shape of a traditional Moscow Mule mug in favor of a more rustic, tilted style. Make sure to rinse immediately after use, hand wash, and care for these regularly so they continue to shine like a penny!

Material: Copper | Capacity: 18 ounces | Number in Set: 1 | Dishwasher Safe: No

Best Budget

Gold armour moscow mule copper mugs.

Complete set

Tarnish resistant

Great value

Slightly smaller volume

This Moscow Mule mug set is a great bang for your buck and has everything you need for a party: four small mugs, a copper double-sided jigger, and four copper straws. All items are also constructed of 100 percent pure, 22-gauge copper, with no fillers or stainless steel linings.

The mugs are finished with a tarnish-resistant, food-grade polish. Plus, this set works well for batching cocktails —since the mugs are slightly smaller, crafting drinks in a batch will help save time when preparing cocktails.

Material: Copper | Capacity: 16 ounces | Number in Set: 4 | Dishwasher Safe: No

Best Shot Glass

Decodyne moscow mule shot glasses.

Fun and cute

Copper plated

This set of four shot glasses is a fun addition to your barware . The two-tone mugs are made with 100 percent copper (although only copper-plated) and have a stylish brass handle. These petite little glasses hold 2 ounces, making them perfect to measure out your Moscow Mule, or you can keep them in the freezer and dole out super chilled shots in them.

When not using at happy hour, keep them on the kitchen counter to hold salt, or pull them out when 2 ounces are called for in a recipe. Note that these mugs are hand wash only.

Advanced Mixology Moscow Mule Copper Mug Set

Resistant to tarnishing

Lifetime guarantee

Only 2 in the set

Advanced Mixology's set of two mugs comes with artisanal wooden coasters, matching copper cocktail straws, and a hammered copper shot glass to measure vodka (or bourbon) in your favorite recipe. Crafted by artisans, the mugs are made from 100 percent copper (that is heated, tempered, and formed), then hammered and finely polished by hand.

Built to withstand the test of time, each mug is tarnish-resistant, chills down in seconds, and remains frosty for a considerable amount of time. Our tester noted the mug really complimented the freshness of the drink, and the copper didn’t taint the flavors of the beverage. Plus, the mug required minimal polishing to keep the shine. The handles are also designed to have the mug nestle nicely in your hand. Better yet, this set comes packaged in a white box, making it perfect for gifting.

Material: Copper | Capacity: 16 ounces | Number in Set: 2 | Dishwasher Safe: No

Copper plating

Although standard Moscow Mule mugs feature a round shape and hammered finish, Crate & Barrel modernizes the classic look with its chic mug. Instead of copper, it's constructed of stainless steel with a lightweight copper plating. The mug also comes in a gray color finish if you want to stray from the standard copper. To keep the plating from tarnishing, it also has a protective lacquer finish. Be sure to hand wash this mug quickly after drinking so sugars don’t chip away at the lacquer, and carefully wash with mild soap to prevent the plating from chipping. Each mug measures 3 inches across and 3.75 inches in height.

Libbey's Moscow Mule mugs are an update to the classic form, with a rich, retro, patina look and streamlined feel. A hammered finish and large handle also add an elegant touch.

While this mug is primarily copper, it features a nonreactive stainless steel lining designed for heavy wear and tear. In addition to Moscow Mules, these 14-ounce mugs are excellent for any range of cold cocktails. Note that these glasses are hand wash only, though they are break-resistant.

Final Verdict

A classic choice is the Cocktail Kingdom Engraved Moscow Mule Mug , the donkey logo being a nod to the manufacturer's long history. If you're looking for an affordable set, the Gold Armour Moscow Mule Copper Mugs are a great addition to your bar.

What to Look For in a Moscow Mule Mug

Although there have been concerns in the past in regards to drinking from copper mugs, it has been shown that it is safe and copper doesn't pose any risk. In fact, copper is a necessary component in the body and exists naturally. So whether you choose a mug that is lined or unlined is a matter of personal preference—purists believe the unlined mugs offer the best experience, while others believe the lining protects the mug from wear and tear. What to look out for are imitators and mugs that are made to look like copper; copper isn't just for appearances—it enhances the taste of a Moscow Mule and helps keep the beverage cold.

The handle can either be welded on or riveted; a welded handle is stronger, so if the mugs are going to get a lot of use (like in a bar), that may be an important criterion. A handle is a necessary part of the mug to keep your hands away from the chilly cup.

Moscow Mule mugs can range in size, so it's important to choose one that has the volume that meets your needs. If it is sold as a set, you also want to make sure you need everything that is included; it may appear a good value, but not if you won't use the accessories.

What is so special about Moscow Mule mugs?

In addition to their attractive appearance, the copper mugs serve a function when it comes to Moscow Mules. The copper maintains the chilled temp of the drink, acting as an insulator, and the material is said to enhance the flavors of the vodka, ginger beer, and lime. In addition, the handle means your hand doesn't come in contact with the cup (which will raise the temperature), assuring the cocktail stays nice and refreshing.

Can you drink a Moscow Mule in a regular glass?

Of course, you can drink your cocktail in any type of glass you choose–but the question is, will it taste as good? While the copper keeps the Moscow Mule nice and chilled, a glass will allow the ice to melt, especially since your hand will help to warm up the drink. You will also be missing out on the enhanced taste since the copper begins to oxidize when in contact with the vodka and boosts the aroma and flavor of the liquor and lime.

Can copper mugs go in the dishwasher?

Most copper mugs are hand-wash only. The dishwasher—the soap, heat, and washing cycle—can easily weaken the lining and material. This will make the copper tarnish and the mug appear weathered.
