The three yacht clubs in marblehead, massachusetts.

I haven't been in any of the three yacht clubs in Marblehead, Massachusetts, for some years, but I remember how each used to demonstrate physically its place on the New England social ladder. Out on Marblehead Neck, where all the summer people have their places, are the Eastern Yacht Club and the Corinthian Yacht Club. Old families with old money — that is, families that have been in the area (including the Boston area) for a number of generations — belonged to the Eastern Yacht Club. No one else was allowed to join. The clubhouse itself always looked to me as if it might collapse. It needed stain or paint, there always seemed to be a loose board or two out on the porch, and the dining and other facilities were modest, though with a certain quiet, old charm. However, belonging to the Eastern meant you were "in." If you didn't belong, you were "out" — and might just as well join the Corinthian Yacht Club.

The Corinthian accepted new people with new money, and its clubhouse and docks were new, meticulously maintained, modern, and posh. To a Texan or anyone else not knowledgeable in New England ways, inspection of the physical facilities of the Eastern and the Corinthian back in those days would have caused the Corinthian to be the immediate and obvious choice. From the New England point of view, that would be all well and good. As my aunt on my father's side once told me, "A Texan may be a braggart, but he can never be a snob."    

Then there was the Boston Yacht Club, located across the harbor from "the Neck," in the town of Marblehead. It was always considered the place for those not in any way interested, or able to be interested, in social considerations. It was for townspeople. So its clubhouse was neither run down nor posh. It was straightforward, perfectly comfortable, practical. Of course, some members of old area families, particularly the young ones with old money, deliberately chose the Boston Yacht Club over the Eastern. That's a related but slightly different form of snobbery, which was negated completely if you belong to both, as some did.

Very amusing, but where does the Boston Yacht Club fit in this pecking order--the yacht club on the other side of the harbor not on "The Neck" and the sponsor of the venerable Marblehead-Halifax Ocean Race?

This all reminds me of the book The Status Seekers written in 1959 by Vance Packard. It's one of the most searing and sardonic looks at social status I've ever read. It really opened my eyes.

But what about Pleon?

Pecking order is quite a bit different today. And Marblehead has 3 clubs on the town side and 3 clubs on the neck side.

Hilarious, but I think a Texan can be a snob. A lot are old southern families going back to the First Families of Virginia and the Jamestown group can be just as snobby as the Plymouth haha

If that's the case you will never know it because FFV and Jamestowne Society members do not brag. The snobs are the Highland Park new monied.

For many years my family enjoyed "belonging" at the Boston Yacht Club. We always parked just outside that quite small parking lot at the club and for good reason. We would take the launch out to our sailboat and sound the horn for pickup when it was time to get a ride back at the end of the day....one prolonged, two short if my memory serves me right. What a wonderful aura to the place...until they finally figured out we weren't actually members! Ooops! My father had an uncanny knack for walking into places he didn't belong as if he owned them. Ultimately we joined the Corinthian for real...I think. If we weren't members there I feel for whoever had to pick up our food tab at the pool.

That is a great story, I'll bet your father is/was an interesting man.

Are these ‘rules’ still applied in 2018 ? I am a member of the Royal Cape Yacht Club ( 44 years good-standing) and I can tell you things have changed. When I joined in 1974 I was given a ‘look up, and down’. I recall a superior of mine, possibly twice my age, who applied at the same time but was ‘blakballed’ as not being ‘suitable’. Somehow I doubt this still goes on. Except perhaps at certain clubs in the St James club area in London.

Birthplace of the U.S. Power Squadron and home of the iconic Marblehead to Halifax Ocean Race

ABOUT Boston Yacht Club, Marblehead’s oldest, is situated on the ‘town side’ of the harbor with great views up and down the harbor.  The Boston has established itself as a leader in both power boating and sailing, and is a popular destination over the winter for members of other clubs when their clubs are closed. 

HISTORY The Boston Yacht Club was founded in 1866.  The 90 original members included the then-18 year old Nathanael Herreshoff who, in 1877, drafted the first sailing measurement rule that later became the basis for future handicap rating systems. In 1874 the first clubhouse was opened in South Boston.  Club members Edward Burgess and George Lawley designed and built the successful America’s Cup defenders of 1885, ’86, and ’87.  Herreshoff designed and built the next seven defenders, later teaming up with W. Starling Burgess (Edward’s son) who designed the winning J-boats in 1930, ’34 and ’37.  Following the Cup’s hiatus during World War II, Ted Hood stepped up to carry on the tradition. As sail maker, and sometimes skipper and designer, Hood held sway through 11 successful Cup defenses from 1958-77. During this twelve meters reign, the two-time contender for the defense, Nefertiti was backed by a BYC syndicate.  The BYC is also the organization from which The U. S. Power Squadrons was founded in 1914 with a mission to improve maritime safety and education through classes in seamanship and navigation.  The club helped organize the first Hospice Benefit Regatta, now an annual event, to raise money for the Hospice of the North Shore. In 1993 the club hosted the first World Disabled Sailing Championship ever held in North America, and the U.S. National Disabled Sailing Championships in 1995.

TODAY The BYC has 500 members and 400 yachts flying the club burgee.  The club offers a range of on-the-water programs to its regular and social category members, from family sailing in Sonars to junior sailing in Opti’s, to an annual members’ cruise.  The club also operates a restaurant and hotel.  The Boston co-hosts the iconic biennial Marblehead-to-Halifax Ocean Race, the oldest of its kind (1905), and the popular, long-running Wednesday Evening Races, and more recently, invitational team (Jackson Cup) and match (Marblehead Cup) racing. The clubhouse has a formal dining room, porch dining, a bar, and outside entertaining areas all overlooking the harbor. The clubhouse showcases paintings and trophies reflecting the many achievements of BYC sailors in many classes over the centuries.

How to Join the East Boston Yacht Club

Good News! The EBYC is currently accepting new members.

In order to become a member please contact us to obtain an application. All applicants must be sponsored by three current club members.

Membership Costs are as follows:

Member Initiation Fee is $650

Annual Membership Dues are $370

Annual Chit Book is $100 and can be used to purchase items (drinks, food, EBYC apparel)

Slip fees are $23 per foot annually, includes boat storage ( based on availability and seniority )

Tender Fee $20 Per year max length 12 ft

Permanent Slip Fee $50 (to hold member's slip if the wont use it during the season)

Boat insurance and Boston Harbor mooring permit are required.

Members are required to perform 12 hours of work

6 hours are required before June 1st each year

Incomplete hours cost members $30 per hour

Locker Rental $75 Per year (available based on seniority)

In this post, we’ll break down the costs of boat club membership for you – how much you can expect to pay when you join, annual membership fees and other costs, and the differences between franchise models and independently run boat clubs like Bridge Marina Boating Club .  

Boating Club Upfront Fees

Boating clubs, like many membership-based programs, typically charge a one-time fee when members sign up. This fee can vary widely depending on the club’s structure, location, and more, ranging from a few thousand dollars to as much as $7,000 or more. Many franchise model boat clubs, along with some independently run clubs that mirror the franchise approach, often charge an initiation fee of well over $5,000, which can be a significant cost of entry.  

This high initiation fee is often used by the boat club to defray the costs of buying boats to grow the fleet, making it a smart business model for the club operators but not necessarily beneficial for the members. Moreover, such a high upfront fee can create a financial obligation on the members’ part, making it difficult to leave the club – even if they’re unhappy with their experience – because they’ve invested so heavily in an upfront cost. At Bridge Marina, we believe that a consistent, reasonable upfront cost is the best solution for both the club member and operator. At Bridge Marina Boat Club, we charge a one-time onboarding fee of $1,499, which includes private, hands-on, on-water training, complimentary watersports equipment, member events, and more. This fee helps us afford quality training, professional staff, and boats while keeping costs reasonable for our members.  

Boat Club Membership Fees and Costs  

Aside from upfront fees, membership fees can also vary from boat club to boat club and are sometimes based on the number of times a member plans to go boating in a season. Most franchise clubs offer a singular unlimited package to members, which is often a good solution for those who can commit a lot of time to boating in a season. These types of “unlimited” models are also very attractive to climates that offer year-round access to boating.  

In our experience as an operator in northern New Jersey, some members don’t have the time to go boating more than a handful of times a season. So, rather than presenting a “one size fits all” solution, our Boat Club offers varying membership levels to suit different needs, budgets, and desires. In 2024, our membership fees range from $2,388 to $5,988 for a one-year term , with further discounts for advance payments or avoiding credit card use. Monthly payments for members who prefer this payment method range from $229 to $529 , depending on the membership level selected.  

Other boating club costs potential members need to be aware of include fuel used each trip and optional gratuities for the dock hand crew. Members may also be responsible for insurance deductible costs for any damage during their use.  

Boat Club Fleet Access and Cost Considerations  

Some boat clubs may also base their fees on the types of boats accessible to members – higher priced membership packages allow access to a premium “tier” of higher quality boats. As an independently run boating club, at Bridge Marina all boat club members gain equal access to our entire fleet o f quality fiberglass and luxury pontoon boats, regardless of membership level chosen. Whether or not a “ tiered ” membership program that allows varying access to boats works for you depends on the types of activities you’re looking for and the overall fleet offered by the boat club .

What You Don’t Pay for as a Boat Club Member  

When you join a boat club, you don’t pay for typical costs associated with boat ownership:

MEMBERSHIP INITIATION FEES

APPLICATION PROCESS

Monthly dues.

Moorage fees are charged as the sum of Base Rate per slip or boathouse space ($105.65) plus the square footage occupied @ $.1459 per square foot*. Typically, the total cost for moorage space varies from $180 for a small sailboat to $400 for a very large boathouse.  *Fees for open moorage single slips on concrete rows are 11% higher ($117.27 + $.1622/sf).

A $16.00 electric base fee is charged for all PYC moorage slip assignments.   Electric meters owned by PYC members will be billed for electricity use at the rate of 9 cents per kilowatt used.   City water is included with your moorage fees.

All Boat Owning, Non-Mooring Boat Owning, Senior Boat Owning, and Intermediate Boat Owning, are subject to the monthly $20 Outstation Fee.  This fee is used for maintenance of the Outstation throughout the year. *Does not apply for Surviving spouse, Junior, Non-Resident, Associate, or Senior Associate members.

Current minimum per calendar quarter minimum for food and beverage expenditures is $75. All cruising and in-house charges for food and beverage apply to this minimum. Ship’s Store purchases do not count towards the minimum. Only the unspent portion will be billed at the end of each calendar quarter.  Senior Boat Owning and Senior Associate are required to spend 50% of the standard food and beverage fee. *Does not apply for surviving spouse, junior, or non-residents.

How Much Does a New York Yacht Club Membership Cost?

The New York Yacht Club, said to be the best club in the world by sailors, is located in New York City and New Port, Rhode Island.  It was founded in 1844 by a group of yachtsmen at the time.

The club was established in 1844, making it one of the oldest clubs in New York.

To date, the club has more than 3,000 members, and membership to the club is by invitation only.

How much does a New York Yacht Club membership cost?

Being a private club, the fees are not publically known, but from our research from third-party sources, we found the membership fees are said to be said to be low $xx,xxx annually and the initiation dues are said to be less than $25,000.  These are estimates given by a third-party source and cannot be deemed accurate.  Refer to the club for more information on the exact pricing.

The club’s headquarters, a six-story stone-front building, is located on 44th street in Manhattan.  Aside from this location, as mentioned, the club offers a located on the water in Newport, Rhode Island.

The club is known for starting the  Americas Cup  yacht race.

54 percent of the members are yacht owners as per the official brochure.  Of these, 1,116 are sailboards and 614 are powerboats.  The rest are yachts ranging from 22 to 289 feet long.
