On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being excellent, where do Hanse sit? Assuming Oyster is 10 ish Swedish boats 8 - 9 Moody 6-7, all IMHO of course. (I wont offend owners of the boats I think are down in the 1-3 range)

Boreades

Hmm - 9/10 for styling but maybe we need to give them time to establish a reliabilty/quality rating. When I looked at their deck gear, I was worried by the mainsheet traveller being so far forward, away from the cockpit and control by a short-handed crew. But that's just a personal prejudice.

4/5 against the other benchmarks you have given. If you give Oyster 10 then HR / Malo are 11.

I looked and smaller Hanse - was not impressed with the internals or finish in general - would put it on par with current Bav finishing for 'attention to detail' but I understand they sail well....

I know someone who own's a 400 did one Atlantic circuit with numerous troubles and on return the surveyor said it was unfit for sea. That was a brand new boat. furniture moving, bulkheads cracked, rusting stainless on arrival in the Canaries and a forestay attachment that was moving. Hanse refused to accept that there was a problem (allegedly)

On the one hand......As it were. Maybe more. I did read that epoxy built Hanses are available for little more than the fibreglass ones. That does seem a significant step forward and a useful bit of 'future proofing'.

Having owned a new 400 for just over a year I can say that although I have had a few teething problems I am more then satisfied with my Hanse, The few problems mentioned where quickly dealt with by the dealer. It is a production boat and that is reflected in the quality against the more bespoke models, however it is also reflected in the price

Personally I think it is nice to see most Hanse with a coloured hull. Makes a change from the usual white. I too have third hand reports of problems with them falling apart after longish trips. Probably ok for normal use of a few weeks a year and half a dozen weekends. I was not impressed when I looked down below at the boat shows. Very much an MFI feel. I would rate Bavaria higher. In saying that I have sailed a number of brand new boats in recent years and have to say the interiors are getting worse and worse. The latest, Sun Odyssey 37 will not last one season before it starts to look very tired down below. Quick example: Doors, the edging around the doors is glued on. A fraction of an overlap results in the trim getting caught and broken off.

I'd agree that Bav's are better built than Hanse, I have sailed both, however the Hanse (371) did sail very well, I did a non stop Portsmouth to Cork on one. That particular boat, having done a respectable few sea miles in mixed conditions was starting to show her age. The boat at 7 years old, the owner commented recently that my Etap was in far better condition, even being 10 years older. The Hanse has recently been sold as its condition was going to start to get expensive. The boat went abroad. Nick, dont buy one.

Whilst I agree - it is difficult to pidgeon a brand within a single 1-10 criteria - it is quite clear what Nick is after ... he's after how we would overall rate a Hanse compared to other makes - quite a simple and straight forward question - and he has had some pretty comprehensive answers with little confusion!

Beneteau vs Hanse: Which Is Better?

Beneteau vs Hanse: Which Is Better?

The Beneteau Boats Company is a boatyard company that first started near the water in Quai des Greniers, France. It was founded in 1884 by Benjamin Beneteau, and after two generations, it is currently headed by Jerome de Metz. What started as a Dundee and lugger fishing boats-making factory became one of the best boatyards we know with over 15 different boat models produced for sport, fishing, and luxury cruising. They employ around 7,500 loyal employees whose dedication and dreams to make sailing better with avant-garde innovations, one day at a time. Today, apart from various other boatyards from where they manufacture vessels internationally, their France boatyard is now at St-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie.

Hanse Yachts used to be one small boatyard down in the Baltic in the city of Greifswald. In 1990, this boatyard was founded by Michael Schmidt, and today, it is headed by their Chairman Gert Purkert. Up to 1,500 employees work for Hanse Yachts under their different subsidiaries. They offer brands of monohulls under Hanse, Dehler, and Moody brands. Their catamaran carries only the Privilege brand. Also, Fjord and Sealine are the usual brands that their motorboats are marketed under. Since its inception in 1990, Hanse Yachts has been selling around 600 boats annually to satisfied customers. A huge part of the credit goes to the designers who are masters of customized designs; Patrick Banfield, Bill Dixon, Judel, and Vrolijk and Co., even Marc Lombard, a very renowned name in boat designing.

Beneteau vs Hanse – Overall Built Quality

Because Hanse Yachts are made by hand, their sales output might seem low (just over 13,000 since 1990), but they definitely give out a high level of customization and satisfaction to their customers; they have a reputation for building that is well deserved. When seeking to buy a Hanse boat, a selection of layout will be provided for you to allow you to mix and compose your favorite sections to your taste. You get to create your ideal layout, galley, and heads combination as you would like it and also determine the number of aft cabins you’d prefer in your own boat. This means you are practically making every design decision on the interior deck of your boat. Upholstery options boast over 40 different choices for your saloon seating, and you can choose a Hull wrap for your hull finish or just pick from the other numerous hues made available.

Hanse Yachts use either Dacron, Fast Cruising Laminate, or High-Performance Membrane for making their sailcloths, and you can either choose which works for you or let the company experts decide. For the hull, epoxy vinyl-ester resins, huge architectural subframes, carbon re-enforcements, and fully laminated bulkheads are employed to create hulls of great strength that will support all the inputs that any customer might add. Watertight bulkheads are also added as part of blue water features for bigger vessels as a safety measure. The keel is connected to the hull by bolting it up through the subframe and aluminum plate. Finally, carbon-reinforced chainplates are relied on to ensure that the rigging loads and stresses are evenly spread throughout the architectural subframe and the hull.

According to Beneteau boatyard engineers, they make use of resin and balsa core to make their hull. Resin is an ingredient that is more like a constant but the secret lies in the balsa core that they use. This balsa core permits the reduction of resin quantity in each hull constituent while still maintaining the desired structural strength. Reduction of resin constituent in the hull helps achieve less overall vessel weight. Alpi Wood is always the wood of choice in the Beneteau boatyards; they are of different varieties, colors and are totally renewable. The use of large-scale computer-assisted design programs to finely detail interior work like spray-finish sets and cutting provides the Beneteau boats with infinite options and no limitations when it comes to interior designs.

Personally, I believe that  Hanse boats are built better than Beneteau boats, but there are other factors to consider as well.

Sailing Performance

Sailing couldn’t be better with these customized Hanse Boats with their self-tacking jib, which is a standard. Now, you don’t even need to touch any sheet or winch in this short-handed sail design; only helm handling is required to get the job done. Well-balanced rudders guarantee smooth maneuvering, and there is a feature that is useful for smooth maneuvering, especially (but not exclusively) during mooring, the direct wash from the propeller over the rudder. The thrusters are innovatively retractable, and this ensures an almost completely smooth underwater line, thereby boosting overall performance. The hull design (made by the Judel and Vrolijk and Co.) adds to the grace of the Hanse yacht performance.

Beneteau boats come with a deep-lead bulb keel end to retain their gravity no matter what weather, sea, or storm they find themselves in at any time. These keels reduce drag. There is no easy way of defining a Beneteau boat in terms of performance due to their vast range of boat models. But, if we were to look into the Oceanis 46.1, which has a balance on cruising and sporting features, we’ll see that the 46.1 is fitted with an extra-long mast which gives it extra credit in sail usage. It comes with a flat deck genoa furler and a German mainsheet system; both features enable this boat to be sailed short-handed.

The furling mast, self-tacking jib, and the set of halyards and plays brought on a single winch at each helm station can make sailing possible with only a small crew or a couple. Under the right circumstances and good sailors, a 16-knot speed can be achieved on this boat.

Judging by the dope designs that these two companies continuously add to their vessels, it is safe to say that they can both perform well in good and foul weather. Their general sailing performance, as aforementioned, is some of the features that make them able to take upon the worst of seas and without too much stress on their skippers and crew.

The Hanse 458 is an overall 46 feet boat. This makes it ideal for comparing comfort levels with the 46-foot Beneteau Oceanis 46.1. The Hanse 458 has a large cockpit that can accommodate a large family to live aboard. The interior also has a sail-locker at the bow to store different things in case of a long voyage. There is a dining table in the saloon that can seat 8 people without discomforting any of them, and for extras, a couch that can seat 3-4 people. It also comes with a standard 2 heads for convenience. There is a variation of this Hanse boat that allows 2 cabins in the aft.

The Oceanis 46 interior design from start to finish is crafted by the Nauta Design. Mahogany Alpi Wood lines it, and there are options of lighter or darker shades of wood available. With a dining table in the U-shaped saloon that can seat about 10-12 people, this is a boat fit for a mini-extended family to lounge in for a few weeks of cruising. There are variations of one aft or two aft cabins available, all with headroom of 6’9″, more than enough for an average-sized male. There is only one head available on this version of the Oceanis, although other options can be obtained if the purchase is to be customized; however, it is rare.

Beneteau vs Hanse – Conclusion

Hanse Yachts are home to extensive design and customization, and owing to their hand-designed method of building, it might take a while to complete an order hence their seemingly small output over the years. However, you and I can agree that every one of these boats is sturdy and strong and will be durable because of the human attention each receives.

Beneteau is unrivaled in industrial boat making with many models under their belt, but indeed, it is a matter of personal choice to decide whether to go with a Hanse or buy a Beneteau. Whatever you choose, may the cruise be forever in your favor.

If you’ve narrowed your choice between Beneteau and Hanse, I would suggest you rent both of the boats for at least a week. That way, you can check first hand which boat fits your needs better. Check out the fit and finish of the woodwork, hardware fittings, overall built quality, etc. Also, look in the corners, behind the lockers, and how the rigging is seated. Again, you won’t go wrong with either Beneteau or Hanse, but you should at least get the one check checks most of your boxes.

Hanse 371 review: Different by design – from the archive

The Hanse 371 is a lot of boat for the money – but to buy her for the price alone would be to miss the point, says David Harding

Hanse-371-review-side-0n

The Hanse 371 is a lot of boat for the money.

Product Overview

Manufacturer:.

Time was when people expected to get what they paid for. Paying good money meant getting a good boat, but can a boat like the Hanse 371 stand up against a modern trend of wanting ever more for less?

Handing over a smaller wodge of cash used to mean accepting a few compromises, but if you had established your priorities, knew what to look for and understood where the builder had made savings, you would have a good idea of what to expect.

Over the past decade or so, things seem to have changed.

We now hear stories of people comparing boats from opposite ends of the quality spectrum, looking at nothing except how big a boat they can get for their money and remaining oblivious to even the most elementary differences in design and construction.

One dealer recently recounted how a potential buyer had walked onto his stand at a boat show and demanded the answers to just two questions: how long was the boat, and how much did it cost?

When a quick calculation showed that he could buy something that was cheaper for its size, he lost interest and walked off.

It’s a trend with worrying implications, and one that can make life harder for builders whose boats don’t come top in the ‘how-cheap-can-they-make-them?’ league compiled by some of today’s boat show visitors.

The relatively low volume, semi-bespoke end of the market has been affected most, but even yards such as Hanse – whose boats are among the least expensive for their length – have sometimes lost sales because the formula has worked against them.

Hanses don’t offer as much space for the money as some other boats for one simple reason: they’re designed to sail.

It’s a distinction that sometimes seems to elude people, including our ‘just-two-questions’ friend at the boat show.

I never cease to be amazed by some of the boats that end up on the same list, and I find it hard to understand how the Hanses are sometimes lumped together with boats of a fundamentally different nature simply because they’re in the same price bracket.

Hanse-371-review-details

Layout of the Hanse 371.

Of course, prospective purchasers might be wondering whether to please those members of the family for whom in-harbour comfort is a priority, or to satisfy their own desire for sailing qualities.

Nonetheless, it’s important to differentiate between boats with beamy, high-volume hulls, shallow draught and modest rigs and the finer-lined, deeperdraught and more generously-canvassed offerings like the Hanses.

Contributing to the confusion, I suspect, is the fact that the Hanses are fast without looking racy.

While even a novice might guess that a Mumm 30 would sail faster than a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 29.1, it takes a little more perception to distinguish between a Hanse 371 and a Bavaria 38, for example.

Hanses occupy the middle ground: they’re performance cruisers, neither floating country cottages nor the sort of boats that are widely raced.

They’re aimed at people whose principal interest is cruising, but who like to cruise quickly in a boat that’s enjoyable and responsive to sail.

Looking for clues

Since the Hanse 371 doesn’t have the marine equivalent of the GT badge, gofaster stripes, alloy wheels and rear spoiler to draw attention to her performance potential, what clues are there for those wandering around the boat show and faced by dozens of thirty-somethingfooters with plastic hulls and fin keels?

The pedigree of the yard and the designer is normally a good starting point.

Hanse was formed by Michael Schmidt, a successful racing sailor who led the German Admiral’s Cup team to victory in 1985.

If you like boats that sail, you’ve a better chance of finding them if the owner of the yard is similarly inclined.

Schmidt formed the company in Greifswald, in what had been East Germany, and acquired the moulds of discontinued Scandinavian designs.

First came the Hanse 291 – formerly the Aphrodite 29, built in Sweden by Rex Marin. Then the Finngulf 33 became the Hanse 331, while the Bianca 42 had her stem chopped down and was introduced as the Hanse 400.

Hanse 548 review: The push-button 50-footer that can be sailed by a couple

Imagine putting a cruising couple from the late 1990s into a time capsule and fast-forwarding them to the present. Then…

All three boats sailed beautifully and, thanks to cheap moulds and government grants following the reunification of Germany, they were sold for almost unbelievably low prices.

Despite this successful recycling of old moulds, Schmidt realised that the boats lacked the internal volume needed for wide appeal in the long term: he needed to develop a range that offered more accommodation while retaining the sailing performance for which the marque had become known.

He re-jigged the 291 and kept her going as an economical starter boat, but commissioned a series of new designs from Judel and Vrolijk – Germany’s best-known design team, with an enviable record in everything from Admiral’s Cuppers to Whitbread 60s and International America’s Cup Class boats.

With men like that behind them, there was never any doubt that the new Hanses were going to sail.

Even if you knew nothing about the Hanses’ background, you could still a distinguish them from their podgier competitors.

Hanse-371-review-external1

The standard self-tacking headsail provides ample power for cruising in a Force 4 and above.

Look at the Hanse 371’s healthy draught, relatively fine entry and narrow waterline, modest freeboard and generous rig.

A little number-crunching reveals a displacement/length ratio of 174 and a sail area/displacement ratio of just under 21.

And there’s more. Instead of the usual iron fin bolted straight onto the hull, Hanse have used lead on the bottom and iron at the top, thereby ensuring a lower centre of gravity and greater sail-carrying ability.

Ideally, you would find lead on the bottom of a moulded stub or spacer, but that’s usually the preserve of boats with a substantially higher price tag.

Whichever way you look at her, the Hanse 371 is a boat with a performance bias.

On the other hand, she comes with several features that distinguish her from racier designs such as the X-Yachts , Elan yachts and the new Dufours (apart from being heavier and with shallower draught).

One is the siting of the mainsheet traveller on the coachroof – though it can be moved into the cockpit – and the other is the provision of a self-tacking jib as standard (an overlapping genoa is an option).

It’s hard to provide enough sail area for good light-airs performance with a non-overlapping sail plan unless a boat is either lighter than the Hanse, or stiff enough to carry a tall rig with an enormous mainsail.

All the same, the compromise in performance at the lower end of the wind range is something that many Hanse owners seem prepared to accept: relatively few boats have been sold with genoas.

Powering up

Another drawback of self-tackers is that they lose much of their drive as soon as you ease the sheet a few inches: the leech twists open and only the bottom of the sail provides any drive.

But you notice the benefits upwind when it’s blowing as hard as it was when I took the 371 for a spin recently.

In a breeze of 25 knots-plus, a short-footed, high aspect ratio headsail is infinitely more efficient than a genoa that’s been reefed around a foil.

With a slab in the mainsail to help keep the boat on her feet, we made upwind at a consistent 6.5 knots, tacking through 80 to 85° and hitting 9 knots when we bore away onto a reach.

With good sails and a folding prop instead of the fixed two-blader, there’s no doubt that we would have done better still: as on the Hanse 315 the standard East sails did the boat no justice.

Since our demonstrator left the factory earlier this year, Hanse switched to Doyle Sails for a while before giving their business to the North loft in Denmark.

They’re also in the process of standardising on Harken deck hardware instead of using a mix from a variety of manufacturers.

When a boat has the performance potential of a Hanse, it seems a shame to compromise it with budget sails and to make it look as though the hardware is whatever the builder happened to have in the box at the time. These upgrades will be a big step forward.

Even though we had to make do with the poorly cut sails on our test boat, the Hanse 371 proved a delight to handle.

She was finger light to steer via the Whitlock rod linkage, with the wheel only loading up slightly when the toerail started getting wet.

By the time the rudder eventually lost grip, the leeward deck would be well under water but no drama ensured: the boat just rounded up a few degrees in a token protest and then, when the gust passed, the main sheet was eased or the helmsman stopped trying to provoke her, she carried on as before.

For a boat that’s light by cruising standards, the Hanse felt surprisingly smooth and long-legged.

She was also remarkably tolerant when thrown into tight manoeuvres, spinning through 360° in either direction with the sails pinned in, and describing a circle little more than a boat length in diameter.

Still moving at about 3 knots when she crossed her own wake to complete the loop, she accelerated smoothly back to cruising speed without a hint of stalling.

She’d be great for match racing, and, of more relevance to cruising sailors, could be wriggled into and out of tight spaces under perfect control.

Especially when you’re short-handed, it’s important to have a boat that answers the helm and goes where you point her without argument.

Having failed to induce any protests with the pirouette routine, I put her head-towind until she was virtually dead in the water (something that’s easier with a selftacker, because it won’t back) before bearing away onto a dose-hauled course.

That’s when I expected her to heel over and slip sideways, but yet again she pulled away without so much as a murmur of discontent.

And that was in a Force 6, with too much sail up.

While we chose to keep the boat over-canvassed, to show up any handling quirks, I’d have taken in a second slab before setting off on a long windward leg.

Down below on the Hanse 371

Hanse have developed a distinctive interior style over the past few years: red-stained mahogany trim coated in a high-gloss varnish and set off by white-painted bulkheads.

The finish is generally neat, but with few laminated corners. Radiused curves, such as around the door frames and galley, are usually in sections with deliberate gaps between them.

Unusually, Hanse use interior mouldings only in the forecabin, after cabin and heads.

Instead, the joinery is bonded to the hull, which is reinforced in the traditional manner with frames and stringers.

Overhead, you find removable panels covering the deckhead except in the cabins each end.

Hanse-371-review-galley

With varnished trim and white bulkheads, the Hanse’s interior feels more American than European.

Here, it’s moulded, but with sections along the outboard sides that can be unscrewed to allow access to the hull/deck joint.

Notable features include the chart table, opposite the saloon on the port side, with seating forward and aft.

Owners generally seem happy with it. And it’s no good looking for the battery switches in the normal places.

With a keyless engine, such as the Volvo, it’s a good idea to hide them somewhere that’s easy to reach but not so easy to find.

Access to the systems, tanks and engine is generally good, and much better than on the Hanse 315.

Blocks and string

For all her good manners, handling would have been made easier by a more powerful backstay tensioner to control the mainsail and the headstay sag (we took the tail around the genoa winch), halyards that didn’t stretch so much and a mainsheet that the helmsman could reach.

All those issues are simple to address, and indeed two alternative mainsheet systems are offered.

What matters most is that the Hanse 371 seems to do everything that’s asked of her. She also joins that select group of cruising yachts that makes you want to hog the helm. I had to tear myself away to take a tour of deck and interior at 25° of heel.

The latter expedition revealed a shortage of handholds between the compression post and the galley.

In terms of crew comfort, the 8ft-long cockpit (2.4m) might be a friendlier place for short people if it had a foot-brace down the middle.

And owners with small children will want to specify the washboardstyle acrylic sheet that fills the gap in the transom. Otherwise, there was little to complain about.

The coamings were nicely angled and high enough to deflect all but the most determined wave sweeping back along the deck.

My biggest concern at this end of the boat was how useable the emergency tiller would be.

Only 21in (53cm) long and facing aft, it would call for a system of lines and blocks if it were to exert any influence over the rudder.

At least the short rod linkage is easily reached via the stern locker.

Unless you choose the option of twin double after-cabins, there’s an enormous, full-depth locker to starboard with a door that opens into the accommodation.

Climbing inside, you can see that the bolts securing the hull-to-deck joint are threaded into rectangular backing plates instead of washers, because the plates won’t spin around (they hit the inside of the hull moulding) and don’t need to be held by a spanner.

Poking around inside the lockers and into dark corners throughout the boat reveals plenty of rough edges, a few areas of dry mat, and other signs that she has been put together fairly quickly.

Similarly, the hull’s external finish is ripply in places.

Yet Hanses have a better reputation than some in terms of structural integrity.

As journalists, all too often we hear alarming stories from owners, charter and delivery skippers, surveyors and repair yards about how well boats have been built.

Some names crop up more often than others. So far, the worst I’ve heard about Hanse has been relatively mild.

Under power, the Hanse 371 is as agile as they come. Astern in a stiff breeze, she could be made to pull her bow through the wind against the prop-walk and then to slalom slowly with no tendency to weather-cock.

With the throttle fully open, the Volvo 2030 Saildrive (which is giving way to the Yanmar 3GM on new boats) drove her along at just short of 7 knots.

It sounded busy and slightly bumpy, but not unduly noisy at its maximum of 3,400 rpm.

With a boat like the Hanse, you’ll be tempted to sail rather than motor whenever you can: her speed, responsiveness and obedience put her in a different league to much of the competition.

She’s a boat you will choose to sail for the pleasure of sailing, and not just because bobbing around on the water is more agreeable than sitting in an office.

If you’re used to racing yachts – which are lighter, more expensive and deeper in the draught – the 371 might feel like a cruising boat, because that’s what she is.

But in terms of performance for the money, she probably tops the table.

Hanse Yachts

quality & engineering

PASSION FOR YACHTING IS EVIDENT IN THE PRECISION AND METICULOUS DETAIL FOUND IN EVERY HANSE

Hanse hull fitting inspection at the boatyard

Every Hanse is built on the German Baltic coast.

German engineers are renowned for their innovation, quality and attention to detail, Hanse has carried this reputation through to their yachts which is evident as soon as you step on-board.

Hand-finished carpentry for a Hanse 588

Hanse Yachts are known for their build quality, which is a well deserved reputation.  The build quality difference you will notice with a Hanse is down to the quality of materials and the way they are used.

Epoxy vinyl-ester resins, huge structural subframes, carbon re-enforcements and fully laminated bulkheads all help to produce a hull strength that is unrivalled in its class. On the larger models (458 upwards) you will also find blue-water features like water tight bulkheads to help you go further in even more safety. .

THE keel hull connection

The huge structural subframe is at the heart of every Hanse and importantly is both bonded and laminated to the hand built hull. Not only does the subframe add a great deal of rigidity to the hull, it also spreads the keel and rig loads throughout the structure. The keel itself is bolted up through the hull, subframe and aluminium plate so you can be completely re-assured.

Hanse hull and keel connection diagram

An elegant feature. The extra high bulwark from Hanse combines the dynamic hull lines with the high guard-wire, ensuring comfort and safety on deck.

High bulwarks flow elegantly with the hull

THe hull-Deck connection

In collaboration with judel/vroljik & co, Hanse has developed a special hull-deck connection which goes well beyond all standard requirements. In addition to the use of highly robust polyester bonding resin, the deck and hull are anchored with the use of high-strength bolts in the cleats. This results in a stable, torsion-free yacht with a sporty character.

What do two more metres get you on a boat? Graham Snook sets the Hanse 348 and Hanse 418 against each other to find out

Product Overview

Manufacturer:.

Size matters, so the saying goes, but what do two extra metres get you on a modern cruising yacht?

Usually, a bigger boat means a different layout or different features, but Hanse’s sub-50ft range of easy-to-sail family cruisers follow a tried and tested layout: forecabin, saloon, an aft-facing chart table and a heads compartment to port, an L-shaped galley to starboard and a cabin or two under the cockpit.

Regardless of model, it sticks rigidly to this formula.

We wanted to find out what you gain and what you lose by going bigger or smaller.

The two boats we chose were the Hanse 348 (Price as tested: £166,804 inc VAT) and Hanse 418 (Price as tested: £254,534 inc VAT) as they hadn’t been tested by YM before.

Both had the same number of cabins and berths.

Both are evolutions of older models (345 and 415 respectively), and both were released at the same time (2017).

The two test yachts we used for this feature are also a similar age.

In fact, on the water both boats were so alike to look at, only the number of hull windows distinguished between the models (the Hanse 418 has three hull windows, the Hanse 348 just one).

We were lucky to have bright sunshine on the day of the test, with wind ranging from 10 to 18 kts true.

With a length overall of 9.99 (32ft 9in) the 348’s performance figures were respectable, more so considering the test boat was on loan from Pure Latitude Boat Club and had a full complement of safety clobber.

Even so, she was a delight.

She was overpressed at times (at 20 knots over the deck many yachts are) but she retained her composure and behaved impeccably.

Hanse 348

When we did reef, her performance was still good.

The Jefa steering made the helm light and responsive.

She cut a fine balance between being entertaining and lively to sail, without feeling flighty or tender.

Not only is she enjoyable, but she’s also incredibly easy to sail as well.

All one has to do is raise the mainsail and unfurl the jib, take in on the sheets and away you go.

With a self-tacking jib, tacking is as easy as turning the wheel.

Hanse use a self-tacking jib on all it yachts – it’s a well-proven system and only when sailing off the wind did the smaller jib and narrow sheeting angle cause an inefficient sail shape.

At all other times, the smaller jib makes loads lighter and sailing a doddle.

A detailed tour

Space around the helm is good; there’s a solid section behind the helm that whilst not wide on its own is wider by the top edge of the fold-up transom.

Forward of the twin wheels, the cockpit seating is good, with the rounded corners at the forward end making it a comfortable area to hunker down.

With two aft cabins below, deck stowage is limited to two sole-depth cockpit lockers and a lazarette locker.

A hatch on a yacht

It’s also a shame there isn’t any dedicated liferaft stowage.

On deck, the moulded tread pattern offers good grip and a lack of genoa tracks and sheets keeps the side decks clear.

From the mast, all lines are led aft outboard of the coachroof where they run under the deck to exit at the aft end of the coachroof and run along the coaming top to Lewmar 40ST winches at the helm.

There were a second pair of Lewmar 40ST winches for use with a spinnaker.

The neat anchor locker has a platform for the windlass, and as it is moulded as part of the deck, the inner surface of the locker is gelcoat and easy to clean.

The lid is made from a two-part mould and the addition of a Hanse logo is a nice touch too.

The Hanse 418 felt slower to react than the 348, giving her a more graceful feeling on the water.

A man helming a Hanse 418

The Hanse 418 has a wider, if not longer cockpit, and more generous seating, although the gap between the wheels is narrow. Credit: Graham Snook

She would also find a groove and stay in it, and was less affected by wave motion and gusts.

Hanse 418

The larger boat is more sedate on the helm. Credit: Graham Snook

Like the 348 we were also sailing at the top of what would be considered a suitable sail plan.

The larger Hanse 418 gave plenty of warning that she was overpowered and wanted to round up – the helm would load up and then she would slowly head towards the wind.

It was, however, possible to catch her and apply helm to halt her course and take her back.

It gave an excellent feeling of confidence.

Reefing was a push-button affair, thanks to the electric winches, and all done from the starboard helm.

She lost a bit of speed through the water (dropping from an average of 6.4 knots to 6.1 knots) but gained more surefootedness.

The grip from the single rudder was excellent and, like the 348, the feedback from the Jefa steering was good too.

It appears Hanse use the same steering unit on both yachts, meaning the distance between the larger wheels on the Hanse 418 was narrow, given the width of the cockpit.

Both boats have the option of using a German mainsheet system which can be operated from either wheel, though the 348 was set up with the mainsheet going to one side.

Exploring the cockpit of the Hanse 418

The Hanse 418’s cockpit felt 50 per cent wider, but only a little longer, while you also get more space around the helm.

The helm has the same raised seats outboard (that neatly hide the rope bins), but behind the helm there are also broad seats which lift to allow access to the large lazarette area beneath.

A winch on a yacht

With the seats locked in the raised position, access is very easy.

Unlike the 348, the ropes atop of the coaming are covered with a GRP panel making the whole cockpit ahead of the helm line-free.

The lines emerge just forward of the helm to an electric Lewmar 45ST winch on each side.

Being so close to the helm, manual winches would be easy to use, but the electric winches fitted make a lot of sense and enable the crew to tend them easily.

Both boats had the cockpit table with an integral stainless-steel enclosure for a multi-function display in the aft end.

The side decks are a little narrow going past the sprayhood, but it has the same excellent non-slip grip texture as the 348.

Below decks on the Hanse 348 & Hanse 418

Below decks, there are many common traits on all models in the Hanse range, the most obvious being the saloon table; the design is similar for all, although on the Hanse 418 (as one might expect) the unit is longer and the leaves wider than on the 348.

You’ll also find Hanse’s excellent touch-panel lighting (if you opt for it) on both models, although it could have been better positioned; on the end of inboard end of the kitchen unit it could be accidentally knocked on or off.

The saloon of the 348 has the table with built-in bottle locker.

Strangely the latch is set back in the tabletop and part of the top pulls out with the draw that holds the bottles.

Galley on the Hanse 348

To port is a straight bench seat while to starboard is L-shaped seating.

With the starboard table leaf lowered, access to the seating is blocked, so you need the leaf raised to slide in.

Forecabin on the Hanse 348

The forecabin of the 348 includes neat features like bedside shelves with USB ports. Credit: Graham Snook

The lighting onboard is good, with LED strip lights beneath the deck-level top-hinged lockers and seat bases.

The floor lights also handily illuminate the stowage under the saloon seating.

There are hull windows but they are a little small.

Superior finish

The L-shaped seating of the 348 is been replaced in the Hanse 418 by longer C-shaped seating that is just under 2m (6ft 5in) long with the end cushions in place – the 348’s saloon seat was just 1.91m (6ft 3in) long, with the cushions removed.

One area where the Hanse 418 shone over her smaller sibling was in the feel of quality of the saloon.

Behind the seats is a fabric-covered fiddle, giving a straight line along the cushion backs, rather than bumpy rounded cushions.

It’s a very neat visual trick that keeps all the lines inside the boat clean and straight.

Outboard of them are contrasting light-coloured fabric panels giving different tone and texture, standing out against the Alpi interior.

It gives the entire boat an air of quality that many manufacturers could learn from.

Saloon of 348

Although smaller than the 418’s saloon, the 348’s layout is similar and still works well. Wine bottle stowage is in the aft end of the table, and there’s enough space to sleep on the settees with the end cushion removed. Credit: Graham Snook

The 348 lacks the other visual details that ooze quality in this class of boat though.

It also lacked the deck-level stainless-steel handrails of the Hanse 418, but with the saloon being much narrower it was possible to brace against the table instead.

The chart tables of both yachts are remarkably similar, even down to the cut out in the corner in place of a fingerhole.

The switch panel is the same on both yachts, and above it, lockers for instruments are the same.

The main difference is the 418’s chart table is longer than it is wide so one sits at the short end of the rectangle.

The Hanse 418 has more space for instruments outboard as well as a unit aft which provides more stowage and more space to mount a display.

Inboard of the chart table, in the sole, the 418 had a handy wine locker, a feature the 348 sadly didn’t have.

Remembering that the 348 is a 9.99m (32ft 9in) hull, the forward cabin is what one expects to find.

There’s a 1.93m (6ft 4in) vee-berth that’s 1.55m (5ft 2in) at its widest, with a handy space for phones, glasses and other night-time necessities outboard at each corner.

There are also reading lights on both sides with USB charging points in their base.

Given the proliferation of USB-charged devices, it still amazes me that more manufactures aren’t doing this, especially as it’s as easy as fitting a reading light.

Above the lights are fiddled shelves, very handy and nice to see.

To starboard is a hanging locker while to port there is a shelved locker.

Beneath the berth is the forward water tank.

Overhead is a large opening hatch that also has a forward-facing section that gives more light.

Deal-breaking berth?

As nice as the 348’s forecabin is, the Hanse 418 blows it away.

There is no comparison.

The 418 feels like a proper cabin making the 348 feel like a high-sided berth.

If there was one area alone on the 418 that would tempt me to buy bigger, this is it.

The difference was staggering.

Navigation station on the Hanse 418

Both boats have a reasonable chart table, facing aft on the port side. There’s more stowage and a larger table on the 418 but there’s still enough space for instruments and books on both models. Credit: Graham Snook

Rather than a vee-berth, the head of the bed is forward, a handy unit provides space for books, glasses and iPads, and there is storage inside too.

You get two large hull windows, allowing you to see your anchorage while still tucked up in bed.

There is also more space aft of the berth – enough to be able to add an en-suite heads cabin as an option (although the berth becomes V-shaped as in the 348).

There is a greater feeling of quality, with lockers instead of shelves, drawers underneath and in the step at the foot of the berth.

Like the 348, the forward berth hides the water tanks.

Berth on Hanse 418

It’s in the forecabin that the 418 really stands out, with a full island berth that makes this feel like a proper owner’s cabin. Credit: Graham Snook

The only thing that lets the 418’s forecabin down is the suprising lack of styling, unlike in the saloon, where tones, colours and textures are used to shake things up visually.

There are deck-level lockers, but it’s dominated by Alpi wood and light-coloured GRP.

Whilst one might expect all the areas on board the 418 to be a lot bigger, the L-shape galleys on both boats were little different.

The 348 has a one-and-a-half sink set athwartships and a good splashback, with a little workspace before the lid of the deep fridge is found outboard.

There is also a handy aft-facing door for the fridge, so getting contents from the bottom needn’t be a challenge.

There’s the two-burner stove and aft of that is a narrow workspace.

Below this strip of worktop is the bottom-hinged pull-out bin.

Like all the latches they are neat and easy to use – a squeeze undoes the latch.

Galley on Hanse 418

A more spacious galley in the 418 benefits from more worksurface area. The saloon seating is noticeably longer too. Credit: Graham Snook

It was simple and well laid out for the size of boat.

Where there was a narrow worksurface and bin on the 348 (next to the aft bulkhead), on the 418 there was a more usable area of workspace, with a long cutlery drawer and bin beneath it.

The sink had changed its orientation and now sat parallel to the centreline.

There were lockers outboard at deck level on both yachts, but the 418’s lockers were both deeper and taller.

Continues below…

Hanse 458 sailing in the Solent

In a year when an unprecedented number of mid-40-foot yachts have been launched, Hanse has thrown its hat into the…

hanse yachts quality

Having a light, bright interior transforms the feel of a boat, but she needs to sail well too. Graham Snook…

The 418 offers the opportunity to extend the galley aft if you do away with one of the aft cabins.

If you don’t want a bigger galley, the extra space from a cabin could be a separate shower compartment with access into the large cockpit locker aft.

Opposite the galley on both yachts were the heads.

Both yachts have a single aft cabin as standard unless you need twin aft cabins – one to ponder, particularly on the 348.

While the heads compartment was OK, it wasn’t particularly spacious.

The aft end of it feels as if you’re being wedged in, so rather than face the sink, it was easier to stand side on.

The tap control and the mixer come out from a black faux slate panel, more reminiscent of a funky hotel than the heads of a yacht.

The mixer head pulls out to become the shower.

Hanse 348 and 418

Both boats fave an assured performance on the water, with the additional size of the 418 adding a little refinement as well as speed. Credit: Graham Snook

There is no grating over the drain so you’ll probably end up with wet socks if you need to use the toilet after someone has had a shower.

Again, the quality touches on the 418 come through.

The toilet compartment is separated by a semi-bulkhead and can be partitioned off by a Perspex door enclosing the toilet and shower compartment.

There are also dedicated shower controls with the cubical as well as a fold-down lid to stop the toilet getting wet.

Aft, in the heads compartment, is a shelf next to the sink and mirror-fronted lockers above the slate effect panel.

Both boats are available with single or twin double aft cabins.

One of the adaptations from the 345 to the 348 was the addition of narrow horizontal windows.

While they add natural light, the thickness of the window surround in the deck mould means it’s tricky to see out of them, particularly behind the cockpit moulding.

Speaking of which, the cockpit reduces the height over the berth to 55cm (1ft 11in) for most of its length, except where one person can sit up straight.

There are handy shelves above the head of the berth outboard.

More comparisons

The berth size between models is very similar, the 348 only losing 11cm 4in in width to the 418, though the latter also has two lockers here.

The cabins on the 348 felt a little enclosed in comparison, due to the 418’s large hull windows and extra hatches, and all but the inboard 56cm (1ft 10in) having at least 1m (3ft 3in) clearance over the berth they felt airier.

The aft cabins on both boats mirror each other and have lockers outboard.

On the 418 they are shelved and have hanging space, on the 348 there are just shelves.

The Hanse 418 heeling

The Hanse 418 would be a more comfortable option for longer cruises. Credit: Graham Snook

Forward of the berth on the 418 is a handy fiddled unit with a small amount of stowage.

On both yachts, beneath the berths in the port aft cabins was the calorifier while in the starboard was the fuel tank.

Access into and around the engine compartment was good from the sides, although a panel needed to be removed to get the best access to the engine when when entering from the front beneath the companionway steps.

The test verdict

Hanse trade on the fact its boats are easy to sail.

During the photoshoot, both boats were handled singlehanded and sailed in formation, a testament to Hanse having delivered on its aims.

Both handled the conditions without complaint and felt great on the helm too.

The 348 felt more responsive and alive which, for short cruises or port hops, is what you want.

The 418 felt more refined but still rewarding and enjoyable; like the difference between a hot hatchback and a grand tourer.

One difference I wasn’t expecting was the step up in quality.

The HAnse 349 being sailed on the SOlent

For short coastal hops, the 348 was our favourite. Credit: Graham Snook

Both boats come out of the same factory after all.

As boats increase in size, so do owners’ expectations.

Where on the 348 you’ll have shelves, on the 418 you’ll find top-hinged lockers.

The 418 conveys her build quality better, with more detailing in fabric panels and areas like solid wood fiddles in the cupboards.

When compared to its rivals it is one of the better-finished boats at this price point.

Hanse 348 and hanse 418

Would you opt for extra space and more refined handling, or a more exciting sail and lower berthing fees? Credit: Graham Snook

The obvious difference between the two yachts is their size – indeed, the main aim of this test was to discover what that extra 2m gives you.

The 418m isn’t just longer, it also has extra beam (around 60cm/2ft), and more headroom, all of which creates more volume.

However, despite the extra space the 418 gives you, the clever people at Hanse have still managed to fit a surprising amount into the smaller 348.

The smaller sister works as a boat in her own right without losing very much at all in terms of features.

Only the heads compartment felt like a compromise, although she would be wonderful as a two-cabin boat.

Pure Latitude, the company we borrowed the 348 from, already owns two 345s and has ordered a second 348 to cope with the boat’s popularity, and it’s easy to see why.

They are both great boats.

The extra space on the 418 would be nice, but I could happily cruise the 348.

Regarding performance, the youthful side of me (and I like to think I still have one) relished the feeling on the helm and the way the 348 reacts, whereas my older, more mature side preferred the graciousness of the 418.

But I keep thinking about the forward cabin on the 418.

For me, it is the clincher.

If there is a criticism of the smaller 348, no cabin feels like an owner’s cabin – they are all pretty much the same.

On the 418 however, you’re left in no doubt.

Is it worth the extra investment?

That’s a decision you’ll have to make for yourself.

Dear Mr Johnston,

It appears you tend to get personal and you have also exhibited poor judgement.

I wonder why you pick on Johcow and not the other complainants to whom Johcow was merely answering.   I see some other very unhappy punters on the forum with similar complaints.

I am an Engineer, of similar age to yourself, and have been in yachts and boats all my life beginning sailing at 7.  Johcow became a friend after he sold me on Hanse boats. He is also an Engineer, retired.   He is meticulous and has a great eye for detail.   There are many others who would support him as well.   It would appear from your misguided eloquence that you maybe in law or accountancy but I would have thought those professions would have resulted in one being more circumspect.

Johcow has not had anywhere near the issues with his previous boats and has been responsible for many sales of Hanse boats in Auckland and they owe a great deal to him. His issues with his current boat are still ongoing after 12 months, giving rise to his frustration.   He also owned a number of yachts before his first Hanse. His son is a boatbuilder.   If I want to know something about boats, I ask his advice and he has always given good counsel.   He may not be at liberty to divulge all the current issues with boat or the starter motor to yourself or even to me.   You may read whatever you like into that.   I note that another 418 owner had to replace a starter motor and another saying he would not buy another Hanse.   So why have you not attacked them?

With regard to my keeping going back, people have strange loyalties. Sometimes it is the better the devil you know.   My Hanse 430 had a serious issue which was fixed by the brilliant boatbuilder Dave at Windcraft Australia. Peter Hrones was great.

I was very disappointed with a number of issues with the Dehler 41 including a bent racing keel from the factory which smacked of poor quality control. It was replaced.   My engineering business which I have handed over to my son is ISO 9001 so I know what quality systems should be.   I wrote to Hanse, after ordering my 418 hull 56, specifically to Gregor Bredenbeck, head of production,   airing my concerns on quality control.   I never even received a reply.   I was assured that my boat would have a 3 rd party inspection in Germany before it left due to my specific concerns.   I am still waiting for written evidence.

My 418 delivered November 2018 has had issues and they are being resolved after 5 months.   The features of the 418 were more suitable to me for cruising with a few modifications.   At hull 81 you should not have too many issues. Johcow’s boat is not as well built as mine.

I was going to call my boat Antsy as a play on Hanse.   I didn’t although it was registered under that name to get a sail number as I could not find a suitable name at the time but it is now called Vellamo.   Perhaps you should look up the many meanings before you again attack someone.     Your nom de plume of Muriel perhaps suits you as well.   But then you might be going to call your boat Muriel for whatever reason.     I was previously on Myhanse as Perchanse   but   reading both Rock’s and your attacks I have tried to relogin as Perchanse but was unable to.   Hence my recent joining under the name Antsy.

Antsy.   Urban Dictionary meaning.   A mood, which is a mix of being anxious, uneasy, restless and bored. You are typically antsy when expecting something pleasurable and exciting to happen ...

Top 15 Trawlers for 2023

  • By Patrick Sciacca
  • October 13, 2023

For every shoe, there’s a foot, and for every boating enthusiast, there’s a yacht. For those individuals who like to cruise their yachts across blue water, spend months on board or voyage to remote beaches and quiet coves, a trawler yacht is the go-to vessel choice. But even within this yacht genre, there are many options. For example, there are some mighty midsize trawlers that are easily capable of transatlantic crossings for an adventurous couple, and then there are megayacht-size craft with next-level amenities that require extra crew. Some trawler-yacht builders offer significant customization and others work from a fixed options list. There are single-engine trawlers and twin-engine trawlers. One thing that is common is that these trawler yachts are designed from the ground up for yachtsmen with wanderlust in their hearts.

Top Trawlers

The following 15 trawlers are all vessels we’ve written about. They are listed in no particular order.

  • Nordhavn 96 : Built for an owner who desired to self-sufficiently while cruising the world, literally.
  • Beneteau Grand Trawler 62 : This trawler can travel nonstop for 1,000 nautical miles.
  • Kadey-Krogen 52 : This twin-engine-capable, all-oceans trawler is a solid fit for voyaging cruising couples.
  • Bering Yachts B76 : The B76 is the builder’s first fully custom trawler in this size range.
  • Ranger Tugs R-43 Command Bridge : This vessel is equally comfortable at a 7-knot stroll or an 18-knot jog.
  • Beneteau 48 Swift Trawler : Based on the builder’s Swift Trawler 47, this yacht has a resin-infused fiberglass hull.
  • Kadey-Krogen 50 Open : The 50 Open can cruise at 6 knots nonstop for 5,000 nautical miles.
  • Outer Reef 620 Trident : It has a three-stateroom layout and optional 600 hp Cummins diesels.
  • Grand Banks 60 Skylounge : This yacht is efficient across a variety of cruising speeds.
  • Krogen Express 52 : Headroom to spare, two staterooms, a chef-ready galley and long range define this trawler yacht.
  • Grand Banks 85 Skylounge : Grand Banks’ V-warp hull form makes for a level running attitude, seakindliness and long range.
  • Vicem Yachts 82 Classic : Construction is in cold-molded, strip-planked mahogany with epoxy.
  • Outer Reef 610 Motoryacht : Power on this Outer Reef is a pair of 500 hp John Deere 6090 diesels.
  • Nordhavn 59 Coastal Pilot : Did someone say this is a 20-knot Nordhavn?
  • Marlow 58E : A high level of customization and admirable performance are at the heart of the Marlow 58E.

Nordhavn 96

The Nordhavn 96 is the yacht builder’s second-largest yacht its 17-model fleet, which ranges from 41 to 120 feet length overall. (There is a new 112 on the drawing table.) The builder says the N96 is based on its earlier 86-footer with a 10-foot cockpit extension, which increases both main-deck, skylounge and below-deck volume. The N96 we reviewed was built by an owner who previously had an 86-foot Nordhavn, but with his plans for extended cruises to remote destinations, the 96 was the right size for his voyaging plans. In fact, since the owner took delivery of the boat, it has been on a continuous circumnavigation.

Quick Specifications

Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

Beneteau’s Grand Trawler 62 has 1,000-plus-mile range and 20-knot speed with twin 730 hp i6 MAN diesels . The Grand Trawler 62 is the builder’s flagship in its Trawler series, which also includes the Swift Trawler 35 , Swift Trawler 41 Sedan ,  Swift Trawler 41 Fly and Swift Trawler 48 . Small touches set the Beneteau Grand Trawler 62 apart. They include sea rails on all lockers to keep stowed food and gear in place, leather-wrapped interior handrails for security in a seaway, and leather drawer pulls like those found on larger yachts. Long-range cruising accommodations include a full-beam master stateroom aft, a forepeak VIP and twin-berth guest stateroom. A Quick X3 gyrostabilizer helps mitigate any potential rocking and rolling on rough days.

Kadey-Krogen 52

The Kadey-Krogen 52 is the trawler-yacht builder’s smallest offering in its raised-pilothouse series, complete with a Portuguese Bridge. Owners can choose from either a two- or three-stateroom layout, and between a single-diesel engine or twin-diesel engines, for owners seeking redundancy. The standard engine is a 231 hp John Deere diesel. With the single-engine setup, draft is 5’5” and with twins it’s a shallower 4’6”. At 6 knots, range is an ocean-crossing 4,850 nautical miles. At 7 knots, it’s 3,300 nm. At 9 knots, it 1,700 nm. The builder states, “The entire Krogen 52 is built from only three molded pieces for maximized structural integrity. There are no additional secondary bonds or caulk joints that can inevitably cause issues. All deck and superstructures are cored and vacuum-bagged to maximize strength while minimizing weight.” Additionally, six longitudinal stringers enhance overall strength.

Bering Yachts B76

Lemanja  is the first custom boat that Bering has built in this size range. The yacht is notable for its steel hull and aluminum superstructure, and for its 4,000-nautical-mile-plus range with its twin 404 hp Cummins QSL9 diesel engines. As rugged as the Bering 76 is built on the outside, it also offers homelike comforts in its skylounge inside, offering panoramic views out large windows surrounding the space. Sole-to-ceiling glass offers similar views in the open-plan salon. Accommodations are fox six guests in three staterooms with a master stateroom and two guest staterooms, plus crew accommodations. In addition to its traditional diesel engines, the B76 has a solar-rechargeable battery bank for hybrid propulsion.

Ranger Tugs R-43 Command Bridge

The Ranger Tugs R-43 Command Bridge is a long-distance cruiser with creature comforts. Our expert found the R-43 Command Bridge to be a solid candidate to cruise The Great Loop . We agree. Twin Volvo Penta IPS450 pod drives give the boat efficient low and high cruise speeds at 7 and 18 knots, respectively. For those that have work during their cruise, the R-43 Command bridge’s master stateroom is set up with an office with a desk. Long trips require extra stowage and a way to clean salty clothes, so on the R-43 Command Bridge there is a washer, dryer, auxiliary refrigerator/freezer and stowage under the dinette, which rises on electric rams. Voyagers who buy a R-43 Commander Bridge can opt for a Factory Delivery Experience, which is three days of instruction on Puget Sound, and includes in boat systems, handling and maintenance.

Beneteau Swift Trawler 48

The Beneteau Swift Trawler 48 has a 1,300-nautical-mile range at 8 knots, but can also speed away at 26 knots if the weather goes south in a hurry. Based on the builder’s 47-footer , the three-stateroom, two-head Swift Trawler 48 has a resin-infused fiberglass hull. Power is a pair of 425 hp Cummins diesels. The main-deck layout includes a galley aft setup, which is accessible to the cockpit. There, the seating and dining area can be fully enclosed, with tracks in place for side curtains. The helmsman is kept comfortable on long passages with a bolstered, pedestal bucket-style seat with a flip-up footrest. The Swift Trawler 48 we reviewed had upgraded 12-inch Raymarine HybridTouch displays (9-inch screens are standard).

Kadey-Krogen 50 Open

Designed for serious extended cruising,  Kadey-Krogen Yachts 50 Open provides owners with amenities that will enhance those longer passages. The galley is fitted with a Sub-Zero refrigerator and freezer, a four-burner Wolf range, a microwave and an optional dishwasher. Unlike in many trawlers and their traditional pilothouse design, the galley is located on the same level as the helm and salon. Belowdecks is the master stateroom amidships with two hanging lockers, 12 cabinets, additional drawers for stowage and an en suite head, shower and two sinks. Forward of the master is an office. The 50 Open’s hull has soft chines and a curved after end, much like the characteristics of a sailboat built for cruising. The result is an efficient hull form that provides a gentle landing into troughs when the sea gets a temper. This trawler can cruise at 6 knots for 5,000 nautical miles; 7 knots for 3,000 nautical miles; 8 knots for 2,100 nautical miles; and 9 knots for 1,200 nautical miles.

Outer Reef 620 Trident

Outer Reef Yachts 620 Trident delivers a three-stateroom layout and optional 600 hp Cummins diesels that allow this vessel to approach a top hop of 21 knots. Cruising speed is a little over 16 knots, burning about 34 gallons of fuel per hour at 2,750 rpm. The amidships master stateroom has 6-foot-8-inch headroom, a walk-in closet and a shower enclosed in smoked glass. In the forepeak VIP stateroom, there are seven drawers, a hanging locker, a 31-inch Samsung TV and 7-foot headroom. The portside guest stateroom can convert to an office, too. The aft galley has a U-shape countertop, a three-burner electric cooktop, a Bosch microwave and a Vitrifrigo refrigerator and freezer. Cherry, walnut and oak are the available wood options.

Grand Banks 60 Skylounge

It’s obvious after a quick peek inside the Grand Banks 60 Skylounge that the  Grand Banks Yachts  trademark external DNA is retained. The deck, cabin house and skylounge are all composed of infused carbon fiber, reducing weight aloft and creating a lower center of gravity. With twin 900 hp Volvo Penta D13 diesels , the 60 Skylounge can accelerate to 31 knots and cruise at about 25 knots. The 60 Skylounge can also travel up to 2,000 nautical miles at 10 knots on a 1,530-gallon fuel tank. Twin 1,000 hp Volvo Penta IPS1200s are also available.

Krogen Express 52

The Krogen Express 52 runs on twin 440 hp Yanmar diesels and can cruise at 8 knots for 1,680 nautical miles or at 16 knots for 500 nautical miles. Top hop:  22 knots. In the interior,  Krogen Express  has outfitted the 52 with a master stateroom and a guest stateroom. The former has a queen island berth, more than 7-foot headroom, hanging lockers and smaller cubbies to port and to starboard, and an en suite head with a molded fiberglass shower stall with a seat, a VacuFlush toilet and a granite countertop. A power lift elevates the berth and grants access to more stowage underneath. The Krogen Express 52’s salon has a 26-inch HD LED TV and a home-theater system, leather Stressless chairs to port and a built-in, L-shape settee to starboard. The galley boasts granite countertops, a three-burner Force 10 propane range with an oven, a refrigerator, a GE microwave oven, a deep Elkay sink and a pullout sprayer faucet. There is a Buff Ultraleather Stidd helm seat for extra comfort during long runs.

Grand Banks 85 Skylounge

The Grand Banks 85 Skylounge comes in at more than 87 feet length overall and displaces 108,000 pounds, with a 22-plus-foot beam and an air draft of just under 26 feet. Owners can choose either a three- or four-stateroom layout. The standard motors are twin 1,000 hp Volvo Penta IPS diesels, twin 1,300 hp MAN straight-shaft diesels are optional. With the larger engines, owners can also choose an optional stern thruster, in addition to the standard bow thruster. With the IPS diesels, top speed is 26.5 knots and fuel burn is 100 gallons per hour, resulting in a range of 699 nautical miles. At a 21-knot cruise speed, fuel consumption drops to 57 gph, and range climbs to 972 nm. At a 9-knot jog, fuel burn falls to 9 gph, and the Grand Banks 85 Skylounge can cruise nonstop for about 2,500 nautical miles.

Vicem 82 Classic Flybridge

The Vicem 82 Classic is a flybridge model built in cold-molded mahogany, which creates a stout hull form with reduced weight. The yacht is notable for its timeless Downeast lines and strong joiner work. For cruising enthusiasts, the Classic 82 Flybridge is powered with twin 900 hp Volvo Penta D13 diesels . The yacht has a top-end speed of 17.8 knots, and the cruising speed is 15 knots. At 9 knots, and considering a 10-percent fuel reserve, range is reportedly 1,100 nautical miles.  Accommodations three en-suite-equipped staterooms. The master stateroom is full-beam and amidships with a king-size berth is on centerline. The starboard-side guest stateroom and a forepeak VIP each have queen-size berths.

Outer Reef 610 Motoryacht

Built for an enthusiastic cruising couple after a three-year boat search, the Outer Reef Yachts 610 Motoryacht (part of the builder’s Classic series ), was customized with a fore-and-aft berth in the owners’ stateroom (as in, not athwartships), and berths rather than bunks in the smaller of two guest staterooms. This Outer Reef 610 was designed to be used as a liveaboard vessel, so the salon is not set up for dining (there are tables in the pilothouse, on the aft deck and on the bridge). A pair of swivel chairs in the salon face the built-in couch and the pop-up TV to port. The 610 is built with hand-laid fiberglass, PVC coring above the waterline, resin infusion and a vinylester barrier coat against osmosis. Power is twin 500 hp John Deere 6090 diesels turning ZF transmissions . The 610 tops out at about 13.5 knots with full tanks and 21 people aboard. The engines burn 20 gph at 1,800 rpm for 11 knots at 45 percent engine load. Those numbers should allow it to cross oceans without shortening engine life.

Nordhavn 59 Coastal Pilot

Nordhavn has long been known for its stout circumnavigation -capable craft, and the Nordhavn 59 Coastal Pilot carries on the the tradition of a beefy build with addition of…speed. Twenty-knots-plus, actually. Twin 715 hp Cummins diesel inboards and a new semidisplacement hull form  are said to be key to the performance equation. The Nordhavn 59CP has a 777-nautical-mile range at a 9.3-knot cruise, and a 255-nm range at its 20.3-knot top-end. Construction is a solid fiberglass hull bottom supported by full-length longitudinal stringers and a series of transversal supports for added backbone. High freeboard should keep the decks dry in a seaway, while rails keep the crew secure during transits. Nordhavn says the 59CP has a “CE category A unlimited offshore rating, ensuring the vessel has the seakeeping and strength capabilities to take on most serious coastal cruises up to 1,000 miles.”

Marlow Yachts 58E

Following on the successful Marlow 57 , the Marlow 58E was started from scratch on a blank sheet of paper. The essence of the 58E is that it has better performance and more internal and external volume than her predecessor. The centerline length grew 10 inches over the 57, but the waterline length increased 16 inches and the beam widened 4 inches. If you were to examine the two boats out of the water, you would see more bell-shaped forward sections making for a soft impact with the vee’d portion. Power options start with twin 575 hp Caterpillar C9 diesels, but the 58E we got aboard had beefier twin 1,015 hp Caterpillar C18 diesels. Top speed: 27.9 knots. At 8 knots, the Marlow 58E can cruise nonstop for 1,400 nautical miles.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What is a trawler yacht?

A true trawler typically has a full-displacement hull form and robust construction to handle open-water operation, and it’s designed to operate self-sufficiently for long periods of time. They are slow-cruising vessels, but over the years, hybrid yachts called fast trawlers have emerged to offer displacement-speed operation as well as the ability to run at planing speeds when desired.

What is a full-displacement hull form?

A displacement-hull form is known is for its rounded nature and deep draft. Full-displacement vessels do not plane on the water, but rather push through the water. This hull design makes displacement-hull vessels incredibly seakindly, but it also makes them relatively slow (think 5, 6, 7, 8 knots) when compared to semidisplacement- and planning-hull designs.

Is a long-range cruiser the same as a trawler?

While all trawlers are certainly long-range cruisers, not all long-range cruisers are trawlers. True trawlers will have full-displacement hull designs and not all long-range cruisers have them.

These new and used yachts for sale around the world and on the MLS may or may not be listed with Seattle Yachts, however we have the expert team on staff to help you with the purchase of any brand or type of boat.)

Search Beneteau by Price

Search beneteau by length, search beneteau by year, continue reading about used beneteau yachts for sale.

The brand Beneteau is one of the oldest, family-owned boat builders in the world, with a history that goes back to 1884. Originally building wood fishing boats, as new technology became available, the company began building fiberglass sailboats in the mid-1960s. The company started selling sailboats in the U.S. when they opened an office in Annapolis in 1976. Since then, they have expanded to 50 dealers across North America. Today they have 400 dealers in 150 countries, making it the largest recreational boat builder in the world.

Beneteau has long produced lines of sailboats and, in more recent years, it expanded into powerboats for the world market. The sailboat lines include the cruiser friendly Oceanis line, with six models from 51 to 32 feet. The first Oceanis was introduced in 1986, and the evolution has continued ever since. The latest models take advantage of design advances to allow a more comfortable angle of heel by maximizing hull form stability, with wide beam carried from stern to bow. This hull shape allows larger accommodations for owners and guests, and the large design and engineering teams are proud of its contemporary use of space and furnishings.

The list of options in layout, equipment, and finish offered by Beneteau is amazingly diverse. The Oceanis 46.1, as one example, offers optional layouts of three cabins/two heads, three cabins/three heads, four cabins/two heads, four cabins/four heads, and five cabins/three heads.

In addition, there are six levels of rigging packages, and three levels of electronics. From owner operated sailing yachts to fully outfitted charter boats, the Oceanis 46.1 can be configured to serve many needs and preferences.

The company also builds a higher level yacht finish with its Oceanis Yacht line, with two models from 54 to 60 feet. These are luxury yachts with elegant interiors and modern interpretations of liveaboard accommodations, deck layout and wide, walk-around side decks.

Another model, the First Yacht 53, is a high-performance sailboat that also can go the distance in comfort and luxury.

All Oceanis and First Yacht models are CE certified for Class A Open Ocean.

For coastal and local cruising, Beneteau offers several other sailing models that combine fun on the water, club racing, and relaxed sailing The First series has four models from 36 feet down to 14 feet. These boats fit the roles of family cruiser, club racing, and general daysailing. Popular with younger sailors and small families, the First series provides maximum fun and great value in a low maintenance boat. The new First SE (Seascape Edition) takes the First concept into the one-design category for competitive one-design and adventure sailing.

Finally, Beneteau offers the Figaro Beneteau 3, the world’s first production, foiling one-design sailboat, a collaboration between Beneteau and the Van Peteghem Lauriot-Prevost design office, architects of the last two winning Vendee Globe around the world races.

The company also builds powerboats, and these range from smaller runabout-style day boats of the Flyer line, ideal for water sports and wake boarding, to express cruisers and the nine sport boat models in the Antares and Gran Turismo lines. These are family cruisers that balance performance and comfort with value.

When Beneteau decided to bring its boat building expertise into the trawler world, it came out with its own version of the cruising trawler with the Swift Trawler. Designed for comfortable long-distance cruising at higher speed than a traditional trawler , the company now offers four models from 48 to 35 feet. All told Beneteau has built over 1,300 Swift Trawlers to date. Each of these “fast” trawlers is perfectly suited for the Great Loop and local and coastal cruising during the season. The semi-displacement hull form and twin diesel engines allow higher speeds when desired, making the next destination a matter of hours rather than long days under way.

More recently, Beneteau has taken the cruising motorboat concept into the future, with the introduction of the Grand Trawler 62. This new and exciting yacht enters new territory in terms of design aesthetics, features, and accommodations. The Grand Trawler 62 is the new flagship of the powerboat line.

Given the tremendous manufacturing volume at Beneteau over the past several decades, there are hundreds of the popular models for sale at any given time. The popularity of the brand means it is relatively easy to find one with the right equipment and in satisfactory shape to avoid buying a boat project. Searching the various multiple listing sites, it doesn’t take long to find a potential boat that matches one’s criteria within a certain radius of geography.

It should also be noted that, with so many boats out there, the service and repair facilities are familiar with the boats, and the number of dealers located around the country also add tremendously to the boat buying and boat ownership experience.

I have been with HanseYachts AG since 2007 and have already worked in many departments. Thanks to my knowledge and the experience I have gained, I can accompany the new concepts all the way from development to the final series boat. This is a great task, and one that fills me with pride. I still get goose bumps when I see a boat from our shipyard on the water or in a foreign harbour. Andreas Unger - Product Manager

COMMENTS

  1. Hanse

Hanse is at the "budget" end (based on £ per measure of size). It tries to differentiate itself nowadays by being performance orientated compared, say with Bavaria. However today's Hanse is very different from those of 10 years ago, so any judgement about "quality" then is meaningless if you are buying a new boat.

  2. Beneteau vs Hanse: Which Is Better?

Beneteau vs Hanse - Overall Built Quality. Because Hanse Yachts are made by hand, their sales output might seem low (just over 13,000 since 1990), but they definitely give out a high level of customization and satisfaction to their customers; they have a reputation for building that is well deserved. When seeking to buy a Hanse boat, a ...

  6. Hanse 388 review: a comfortable and elegantly styled yacht

I tested the new Hanse 460 in the October 22 issue of Yachting Monthly and there's no doubt that it's as up-to-the-minute as a cruising boat designed for popular appeal could possibly be. Further down the size range, the Hanse 388 is based on a hull that was designed for the 385 back in 2012. The deck, cockpit, keel and accommodation ...

  8. Hanse 371 review: Different by design

Look at the Hanse 371's healthy draught, relatively fine entry and narrow waterline, modest freeboard and generous rig. A little number-crunching reveals a displacement/length ratio of 174 and a ...

  9. Boat Review: Hanse 588

Accommodations. Compared to the 575, the 588 boasts a more open saloon with larger hull portlights and improved finish quality. There is a total of 20 deck hatches, which let in scads of outside light, but will also pose something of a chore when closing up the boat for a squall. The overall effect, as is common now on Euro boats, is of a ...

Hanse Yachts are known for their build quality, which is a well deserved reputation.
