Royal Huisman sailing yacht Athena

Silicon Valley entrepreneur Jim Clark is known for a lot of things, including co-founding Netscape with a $5 million investment that reportedly brought him a return of $5 billion, but in yachting circles he’s renowned for creating one of the finest sailing yachts afloat. He spared no expense in building the 295-foot Royal Huisman Athena in 2004, and he has cruised aboard her extensively, garnering a weekly charter rate of about $350,000 when he’s not using the yacht.

When Clark originally listed Athena for sale in 2012, his asking price was $95 million — not too far off what venture capitalist Tom Perkins nabbed in 2009 (about $89 million) for the 289-foot Perini Navi Maltese Falcon .

Now, Clark has signed with Ocean Independence for the sale of Athena , and the asking price is $75 million.

That’s a price drop of about 20 percent, no doubt a nod to the overall slump the brokerage market has endured since the global economic recession began. Even still, it’s hard to put a price tag on such an iconic yacht; even today, a full decade after her launch, Athena is ranked among the five largest private sailing yachts in the world. Quite frankly, there are hardly any other yachts against which to compare her.

Ocean Independence is marketing Athena as being in perfect condition with new sails for good measure. She’s currently lying in the Mediterranean, and tours can be arranged for qualified buyers.

$10.9 million price drop on 90m S/Y ‘Athena’

The largest second-hand sailing yacht publicly for sale is now priced at a reduced $59 million….

The owner of the 90m three-masted schooner Athena , currently for sale with Burgess and Merle Wood & Associates, has instructed a $10.9 million reduction in price. She is now for sale at $59 million.  

Delivered in 2005 by Royal Huisman – regarded by many as the best sailing yacht builder in the world by quality – Athena has naval architecture from Dykstra Naval Architects, exterior work by Pieter Beeldsnijder and the interior design work of Rebecca Bradley, a design collaboration that has achieved a stylish balance of classic and contemporary sailing yacht design.

With eight completed sailing yacht transactions in 2016, Burgess has its finger on the pulse for such listings. Henry Craven-Smith, sales broker at Burgess says, “The market has almost certainly been towards the pedigree, high performance custom sailing yacht sector,” adding that there is currently a “lack of pedigree inventory on the brokerage market.”

The 50m+ new build sailing superyacht market is one typified by innovation – seen by the likes of recent projects, 85m Aquijo , 70m Sybaris and 142.8m A .

But, much like the re-sale of highly bespoke motoryachts, finding a buyer with the same exact taste, vision and intended purpose, is challenging. However, as Craven-Smith astutely highlights, “It would be naïve to comment on the possible residual value of any iconic sailing yachts. After all, it only takes one buyer.”

With many of the 50m+ projects today, it appears that sailing performance comes secondary to comfort, but Athena looks to offer both – and in abundance. She has the volume (1,125gt), guest capacity and asking price of a 65–70m motoryacht, and a staggering 2,500 sqm sail area.

While the volume for pound is better in a motoryacht, when you see a specification sheet like Athena’s , the large sailing yacht ownership demise is baffling. Craven-Smith adds: “I have one or two large yacht clients who would never consider building anything other than a sailing yacht. To them it is about having something aesthetically spectacular and highly unique that no-one else has. Like a Monet or Van Gogh.”

Last moments of Bayesian yacht as it’s battered by storm before sinking

Newly released CCTV footage has shown the moment the Bayesian superyacht was engulfed by a suspected waterspout.

Six passengers onboard the boat , including tech tycoon  Mike Lynch , 59, his daughter Hannah, 18, and chairman of Morgan Stanley international Jonathan Bloomer, remain missing after the yacht sank early Monday morning.

The blurry footage shows the lights of the distant boat seen from a marina as rain batters the vessel.

Suddenly, the lights disappear, and the boat is no longer visible. Local Giornale Di Sicilia said: ‘In just sixty seconds – says the owner of the villa – you can see the ship disappear.

‘Of about twenty cameras installed in the house, only one was not disturbed by the wind and rain. You can clearly see what is happening.

‘There was nothing that could be done for the boat. It disappeared in a very short time.’

A total of 15 other passengers, including Mr Lynch’s wife Angela Bacares, have been rescued so far while one person, the boat’s chef, has been found dead.

Emergency responder Luca Cari told Italian daily  Giornale Di Sicilia  divers can stay underwater for a maximum of 12 minutes, so the searches are being carried out for 10 minutes per dive.

According to reports, Mr Lynch and the group were on holiday celebrating after Mr Lynch was acquitted of fraud in June following a high-profile court case over the company’s sale.

The Italian Coastguard believes Mike Lynch and five other missing people may still be inside the sunken yacht, a spokesman said.

Vincenzo Zagarola told the PA news agency this was the working theory of officials on Sicily because it is believed the boat sank quickly and search and rescue efforts by sea and air have so far delivered no results.

He said: ‘We think they are still inside the boat, that is our very hard idea.

‘Our search and rescue activity by sea and air has gone on for around 36 hours.

‘Of course, we do not exclude that they are not inside the boat, but we know the boat sank quickly.

‘We suppose that the six people missing may not have had time to get out of the boat.’

Here's what we know about why a luxury sailing boat sank off the coast of Sicily

Emergency workers in southern Italy are still hunting for six people missing after a tornado sank a luxury yacht early Monday - prompting an air and naval operation off the coast of Sicily.

Fifteen people were rescued from the wreckage, according to Italy's Coast Guard. One body was recovered on Monday and four more on Wednesday, after divers struggled to reach deep inside the yacht around 50 meters underwater (approximately 150 feet).

Two Americans and four Britons were among the six initially reported missing - including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International, and Chris Morvillo, a prominent lawyer.

Here's what we know.

What happened?

A small waterspout - a type of tornado - spun over the Mediterranean island early Monday, likely capsizing the sailing boat amid lashings of rain and strong thunderstorms.

The British-flagged yacht, called the "Bayesian," was anchored about a half a mile from the port of Porticello, on Sicily's northern coast. The vessel sank after its mast broke in half in the storm, Salvatore Cocina, head of Sicily's Civil Protection, told CNN on Tuesday.

Eyewitnesses described furious gales and hurricane-like winds that left an avalanche of debris near the pier.

More than a dozen survivors were spotted in the area hanging onto life rafts, according to the captain of a nearby boat, who steadied his ship to avoid colliding with the Bayesian.

"We got this strong hurricane gust and we had to start the engine to keep the ship in an angled position," Karsten Bower told reporters in Palermo on Monday. "After the storm was over, we noticed that the ship behind us was gone."

Bower and his crew rescued four injured people, he said, before calling Italy's Coast Guard - who later rescued the remaining survivors.

One of those rescued - a child - was airlifted to the children's hospital in Palermo. Eight people were hospitalized in total, according to the mayor's office.

The girl's mother, Charlotte, described how she battled to hold onto Sofia, her 1-year-old daughter, as reported by Italian news agency ANSA.

"In two seconds I lost the baby in the sea, then I immediately hugged her again amidst the fury of the waves. I held her tightly, close to me, while the sea was stormy," she told journalists. "Many were screaming."

The mother and daughter were later reunited with the father, James, according to a doctor at the local children's hospital in Palermo.

"The survivors are very tired and are constantly asking about the missing people," the doctor, Domenico Cipolla, said Monday. "They are talking and crying all the time because they have realized that there is little hope of finding their friends alive."

Italy's fire brigade dispatched helicopters to aid in the search, officials said Monday. After an unsuccessful attempt on Monday, the brigade sent divers to try and enter the sunken ship Tuesday, recommencing the operation on Wednesday.

The depth of the wreck means divers can only work there for limited periods of time, according to Marco Tilotta, an inspector for the diving unit of Palermo's local fire brigade. The Italian fire brigade said Monday its divers had reached the yacht's hull 49 meters (160 feet) below sea level.

The United Kingdom's Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) said it has deployed a team of four inspectors to Palermo which is conducting a preliminary assessment of the scene.

Who was on board?

Twenty-two people were on board the Bayesian, which was flying under a British flag and had mostly British passengers and crew, in addition to two Anglo-French, one Irish and one Sri Lankan person, a spokesperson for Italy's Coast Guard told CNN.

A troupe of high-profile guests are among those missing, including Lynch, the 59-year-old British tech investor who fought a fraud case earlier this year in the United States - which spiraled from the disastrous $11 billion sale of his company to tech firm Hewlett-Packard (HP) in 2011.

His 18-year-old daughter was also named missing. Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, survived the accident. Bacares told Italian daily newspaper La Repubblica that she woke up at 4 a.m. local time, as the boat tilted. She and her husband were not initially concerned, she said, but became worried when the windows of the yacht shattered and chaos erupted.

Bacares spoke to the newspaper while sitting in a wheelchair, at a hospital in the Sicilian town of Termini Imerese. She had abrasions on her feet and bandages on other parts of her body, it reported.

Bloomer, the finance tycoon, and Morvillo, a prominent lawyer - and both their wives - are also among the missing, according to Salvatore Cocina, head of Sicily's Civil Protection.

Morvillo, an American partner at Clifford Chance, was involved in successfully defeating the US fraud case against Lynch in June. Another employee of the firm, Ayla Ronald, and her partner, survived the incident, according to a spokesperson for Clifford Chance.

The body that was recovered from the vessel on Monday was identified as the onboard chef Ricardo Thomas, an Antiguan citizen, Reuters reported.

What do we know about the boat?

Built in 2008, the 56-meter (184-foot) yacht was manufactured by Italian company Perini Navi, Reuters reported. According to the Associated Press, the boat has been available for charter for $215,000 (195,000) per week.

Lynch's wife is linked to the yacht. The Bayesian is held by the company Revtom Limited, according to records from the maritime information service Equasis. The company's latest annual return from April lists Bacares as the proprietor.

"Bayesian," the name given to the vessel, is linked to the statistical theory on which Lynch built his fortune, according to Reuters.

The yacht's mast stood 72.27 meters (237 feet) high above the designated water line, just short of the world's tallest mast which is 75.2 meters, according to Guinness World Records. It was the tallest aluminium mast in the world, the Perini Navi website said.

Perini Navi is known for making "good quality boats," according to Caroline White, deputy editor of BOAT International, a media group serving the superyacht industry.

White told CNN that if the Bayesian dismasted, "it should theoretically become more stable." "But it might be a different story if you are in the middle of a violent storm with incredibly strong winds pinning you to the water," she added.

Dangerous weather conditions

Strong storms across Sicily brought torrential rainfall late Sunday. Initial reports suggest a small waterspout, which developed over the area Monday morning, could have been behind the yacht's sinking.

Waterspouts - one of several types of tornadoes - are spinning columns of air that form over water, or move from land out to water. They are often accompanied by high winds, high seas, hail and dangerous lightning. While they are most common over tropical oceans, they can form almost anywhere.

Matthew Schanck, chair of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, told CNN that while waterspouts in Sicily are rare, "there is a risk" they can happen - just not every day.

Waterspouts rely on warm waters to gain energy and the Mediterranean Sea has been very hot, reaching a record daily median of 28.9 degrees Celsius (84 Fahrenheit) last week, according to preliminary data from researchers at the Institute of Marine Sciences in Spain.

Local temperatures have been even higher, with waters around Sicily reaching almost 30 degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit), almost 3 degrees more than normal, Italian climatologist Luca Mercalli told CNN.

"Warmer oceans have more energy and more humidity to transfer to the atmosphere, the most important fuels for storms," he said.

Sicily yacht sinking: Who are the missing and rescued?

A search operation is continuing off the coast of Sicily after the British-flagged luxury yacht Bayesian sank during freak weather early on Monday morning.

Fifteen of the 22 people who were on board were rescued from the boat.

The vessel's cook - understood to be Recaldo Thomas - is confirmed to have died and his body was recovered the same day the yacht went down, according to Sicily's civil protection agency.

Of the six who remained missing, five of their bodies had been brought to shore by Thursday, with divers continuing to search for the last person.

Italian authorities have not confirmed the identities of those recovered.

Recaldo Thomas, chef

The body of a man recovered near the Bayesian yacht is believed to be that of Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian-Antiguan chef who was working on the boat.

His friends have been paying tribute to him. Gareth Williams, who lives in Antigua, knew Thomas for 30 years.

"I can talk for everyone that knew him when I say he was a well-loved, kind human being with a calm spirit," he told the BBC.

The two grew up together in Antigua, where Thomas spent his time during off-season.

"He would come over to mine over the weekend and he would sing. He had the deepest, most sultry voice in the world, and a smile that lit up the room.

"He told me just the other day that he needed to work two more seasons to fix up his late parents' house. He loved yachting, but he was tired."

Who is missing?

The names and nationalities of the six people who went missing have all been confirmed. Four are British and two are American.

Among them are British businessman Mike Lynch, who was recently acquitted of fraud in the US.

Several people on the boat were involved in his recent trial and there have been reports that the yacht trip was a celebration of Mr Lynch’s acquittal.

Mike Lynch, UK tech entrepreneur

Mr Lynch is a tech entrepreneur who was once regarded by some as “Britain’s Bill Gates”.

Raised in Essex, he went on to study at the University of Cambridge, before co-founding software company Autonomy in 1996.

The 59-year-old made his riches by selling the company to US tech giant Hewlett-Packard in 2011 for $11bn (£8.6bn).

Mr Lynch became embroiled in a decade-long legal battle following the acquisition. He was acquitted in the US in June on multiple fraud charges, over which he had been facing two decades in jail.

He told BBC Radio 4 in August that he believed he had only been able to prove his innocence in US court because he was rich enough to pay the enormous legal fees involved.

"You shouldn't need to have funds to protect yourself as a British citizen," he said.

Who is British tech tycoon Mike Lynch?

Mr Lynch was travelling with his daughter Hannah, who is also missing.

The 18-year-old is reportedly the younger of Mr Lynch's two daughters.

She had just completed her A-levels and secured a place to read English at Oxford University, according to the Times .

Chris Morvillo, lawyer

Chris Morvillo is a lawyer who represented Mr Lynch in his US trial. Since 2011, he has been a partner at the Clifford Chance law firm in New York.

His biography on the firm’s website says that he served as assistant attorney for the southern district of New York from 1999 to 2005.

During his tenure, he worked on the criminal investigation surrounding the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center.

Neda Morvillo, jewellery designer

American jewellery designer Neda Morvillo, wife of Mr Morvillo, is also unaccounted for.

Mr Morvillo's employer, Clifford Chance, confirmed the news.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the law firm said: "We are in shock and deeply saddened by this tragic incident."

Ms Morvillo designs jewellery under the name Neda Nassiri. Her website says she "has been designing and hand-crafting fine jewelry in New York City for over 20 years".

Jonathan Bloomer, banker

Jonathan Bloomer is the chairman of the Morgan Stanley International bank and insurance company Hiscox.

The 70-year-old Briton was educated at Imperial College London and has previously served on a number of company boards.

Mr Bloomer appeared at trial as a defence witness for Mr Lynch, according to the the Financial Times. Media reports suggest the pair are close friends.

Mr Bloomer's twin brother, Jeremy, told the BBC he felt numb and his family were "coping the best we can" as rescue workers continued to search for his sibling.

“He was my elder by half an hour, so, it means a lot when you lose a twin brother. We’ll still wait and see, so it’s fingers crossed," he said.

He added: “It’s a slow process, and it will take time. There might be air pockets but we don’t know.”

Aki Hussain, group chief executive of Hiscox, which Mr Bloomer has chaired since 2023, said: "We are deeply shocked and saddened by this tragic event.

"Our thoughts are with all those affected, in particular our chair, Jonathan Bloomer, and his wife Judy, who are among the missing.”

Family await news of man on sunken luxury yacht

Judy, the wife of Jonathan Bloomer, is also among the six people missing.

Ms Bloomer is listed as a former director of property developer Change Real Estate along with her husband.

She has been called a "brilliant champion for women's health" by a charity she has worked closely with.

Ms Bloomer has been a trustee and supporter of gynaecological cancer research charity the Eve Appeal for more than 20 years.

The charity's chief executive, Athena Lamnisos, said she was "deeply shocked to hear the news that our very dear friend and her husband Jonathan, are among those missing".

"Our thoughts are with Judy and Jonathan’s family, as well as all those who are still waiting for news after this tragic event," she added in a statement.

Who has been rescued?

Among the 15 people who were rescued are nine members of the yacht's crew.

This means every member of the crew is accounted for minus the chef, who local authorities say has died.

Eight of the 15 who were rescued have been taken to hospital.

Dr Fabio Genco, who was part of the local emergency medical service that treated the survivors, said all of them had been discharged from hospital by Tuesday.

A British mother, named locally as Charlotte Golunski, was travelling on the yacht with her partner and baby girl. All three were rescued from the boat.

In an interview, she described holding her infant daughter above the surface of the sea to save her from drowning.

Ms Golunski is a partner at Mr Lynch’s company, Invoke Capital, where she has worked since 2012, according to her LinkedIn profile.

The Times has reported that she has previously worked for Autonomy, the company at the centre of Mr Lynch's recent court case.

Another lawyer, Ayla Ronald, was also rescued along with her partner.

The New Zealand national works for Clifford Chance, where Mr Morvillo is a partner, and was part of Mr Lynch's legal team for his June trial.

Her father told the Telegraph that she was "invited to go sailing as a result of the success in the recent United States court case".

Angela Bacares, Mr Lynch's wife and Hannah Lynch's mother, is also among those who have been rescued.

On Monday, Ms Bacares was using a wheelchair after suffering ­abrasions on her feet, according to the newspaper La Repubblica.

Seven people have died in the Bayesian sinking disaster. These include the six missing people who were inside the yacht when it sank, as well as a seventh person who was located shortly after the disaster. The seventh person is understood to be the yacht's chef, Recaldo Thomas. The other six are:

It is understood that the yacht was being used to celebrate Lynch's recent victory in a 13-year £8 billion fraud acquittal.

No one remembers the mast snapping before 56m superyacht Bayesian sunk, says crew

No one recalls seeing the mast snap on board the 56-metre Perini Navi sailing yacht Bayesian which sank off the Italian island of Sicily on 19 August. The eyewitness account of a crewmember on board the vessel, which was obtained by BOAT International , said that the boat was struck by a freak weather event which led to the yacht heeling at around 20 degrees to starboard. As crewmembers were securing items, the heeling angle began to increase rapidly until the yacht started taking on water and sank rapidly.

The crewmembers who were up on deck were able to evacuate the yacht with minor injuries. The yacht is understood to have sunk in just twelve minutes, and it is believed that a "major ingress" of water from the top down would have caused the sinking, according to a captain who wishes to remain anonymous. This is based on the fact that no breaches have been reported in the yacht's hull, and the fact that the yacht should have been able to remain afloat with two flooded compartments.

The captain of the sistership to the sunken 56-metre Perini Navi sailing yacht Bayesian has said it is "very difficult to understand what could have overwhelmed a vessel of that size" and called the 56-metre Perini Navi series "bulletproof".

David Hutchinson, captain of Rosehearty , said he had taken the yacht around the world multiple times and he had "total faith in the boat".  "We've been to Antarctica and Chile, and we've had her in 70 knots of wind," he says, and the vessel had never put them in a situation that felt unmanageable.

However, Hutchinson noted there were differences between Bayesian and Rosehearty ; notably, Bayesian's  74-metre mast, which would have been heavier and added increased windage. The yacht's layout was also different, with guest accommodation on Bayesian located further forward.

• During a news conference on Saturday morning (24 August), prosecutors confirmed they are in the early stages of investigating a "crime hypothesis" of culpable shipwreck and manslaughter. Authorities also said the yacht likely sunk because of a downburst (powerful wind that descends from a thunderstorm), rather than a waterspout.
• A search and rescue for six missing people has concluded. The final missing person is understood to be Hannah Lynch. 
• According to Reuters, six bodies have now been found in the sunken yacht. These include Mike Lynch, a British technology entrepreneur who co-founded Autonomy Corporation and founded Invoke Capital, although Italian authorities have not confirmed this.  
• One person was found immediately after the yacht sunk, and this is understood to be the yacht's chef. 
• Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, and a one-year-old are among the fifteen people rescued along with Bayesian' s captain, James Cutfield.
• Another sailing vessel in the area, the 42-metre Sir Robert Baden Powell ,  stepped in to offer assistance in the initial rescue.
• Divers have been able to reach Bayesian' s sunken hull, which lies at 45 metres of depth about half a mile from the coast. The yacht had the largest aluminium masts of any sailing yacht on the water.
• Eyewitnesses in the area reported "hurricane" conditions off the coast but local weather websites did not indicate any severe squall, which suggests that the weather event was not forecast.
• At around 5am local time on 19 August, Bayesian was hit by bad weather and sunk.  The sailing yacht was anchored or idle at the time of the incident.

Built in Italy by renowned builder Perini Navi and delivered in 2008, the yacht's naval architecture was developed by Ron Holland Design while the interior design is by Rémi Tessier . She was formerly known as Salute and was last refitted in 2016. She was listed for sale earlier this year, according to BOATPro . The yacht had accommodation for nine guests and 12 crew.
