Wood, carbon fiber, foam and epoxy: her name is Toroa

Launched the 22-meter yacht designed by botin partners.

torna sailboat

Toroa is 22-meter yacht designed by Spanish firm  Botin Partners.  The modern sloop was launched by Brooklyn Boat Yard in summer 2017. She is built of wood, carbon fiber, foam and epoxy composites.

In hull shape and sail plan Toroa ia very similar to many of today’s modern racing boats with extended bow sprit, plumb bow, wide beam running well aft, T-bulb (lifting) keel and twin rudders.  Unlike today’s stripped-out racing yachts, Toroa has interior accommodations and cruising amenities to allow her owner, family and guests to cruise the world’s oceans in comfort, style and speed.

Toroa is as innovative below the waterline as she is above. The helm controls linked twin rudders set well aft. Most impressive, perhaps is the hydraulically controlled lifting keel that increases the boat’s draught from about 8 feet to just under 15 feet when lowered.

torna sailboat

The hollow, stainless steel keel fin is fitted into a carbon box that extends from the boat’s bottom to the underside of the deck. At the top of the fin is a milled stainless steel plate that fits against the deck when the keel is raised and the bottom when it is lowered. The box contains several Teflon “cutouts” shaped to fit the fin and guide it on its journeys up and down.

What a beautiful yacht. I love the classic lines blended with lightweight construction and modern rig and foils. She looks fast enough to sail around most weather systems. Congratulations to all involved in creating Toroa. An excellent choice of name also Toroa/Albatross. Graceful in flight, spending most of the time at sea, gliding over the oceans.

Brooklin Boat Yard Launches Custom 55-Foot Sloop

Brooklin Boat Yard Launches Custom 55-Foot Sloop

Brooklin Boat Yard launched  Outlier , a 55-foot sloop designed by Botin Partners of Spain, on June 5 after a ten-month build at the Brooklin, Maine, boatyard. The cold-molded custom yacht is a spirit of tradition racer and daysailer. While she has a modern underbody with a deep, fixed-bulb keel,  Outlier ’s aesthetic above the waterline is traditional with a roomy cockpit, closed transom and classic housetop. Outlier’s owner intends to race the boat in East Coast and Caribbean regattas beginning this summer.

The Botin 55 has a lightweight cold-molded wood hull and deck built with a carbon-reinforced keel structure to support the deep fin and lead bulb. The three-spreader carbon mast is from Hall Spars with a North Sails 3Di sail plan. Since her owner doesn’t intend to taker her offshore for extended cruises, the interior is clean, classic, and simple. The lightweight interior is built with paneled vertical grain white oak and an English brown oak cabin sole and finished in satin sheen varnish with white painted deck frames for accent. There is a spacious main salon amidships, which connects with a simple galley and well-equipped navigations station. A quarter berth aft offers sleeping accommodations while underway, and a forward cabin has four bunks for crew plus a full head.

“Outlier is an incredible marriage of modern engineering and traditional styling,” said Steve White, president of Brooklin Boat Yard. “She exemplifies the continuing evolution of the spirit of tradition class. She’ll perform well on the racing circuit while carrying on the classic aesthetic for which wooden boats are well known.”

Outlier will call Nantucket her homeport. Her upcoming racing schedule includes the weekly local races in Nantucket, The Castine Classic, Camden to Brooklin Classic, Eggemoggin Reach Regatta, Nantucket Sailing Week, Opera House Cup, and others.

This is Brooklin Boat Yard’s second collaboration with Botin Partners,. The yard launched  Toroa in 2017. Outlier's owner selected Brooklin Boat Yard and Botin Partners to design and build a custom yacht after seeing Toroa.

Swiftsure Yachts

Toroa  is a rare find, a well-found compact classic cruiser with a complete and current equipment inventory. This is a boat with the equipment and condition for immediate shorthanded cruising.

Chuck Paine’s design gives the Able 34 a graceful yet stout look. The sweeping sheer and short overhangs blend into a distinctive look with modest freeboard and a relatively long waterline. Form and function work together. The masthead rig spreads more than 500 square feet of canvas and the displacement/length is under 300, so she’ll sail well even in lighter wind conditions.

As a centerboarder with on 3’5” draft with the board up, Taroa will be able to sneak into anchorages where few others dare and find a spot close to shore or amongst a crowd.

Toroa  is already a proven voyager, having sailed from Maine to the West Coast. After a major refit including a 2004 Yanmar, standing rigging, refrigeration, and sails, she was trucked to the Pacific Northwest. The current owner’s move overseas is the reason for selling.

Toroa  has been maintained and upgraded by knowledgeable sailors for their own use. Equipment includes bow thruster, windvane, watermaker, and solar panels. Toroa is not only ready to, she is ready to go with the right equipment.

Interior Accommodations

Toroa ’s cozy interior features a straightforward layout configured for serious offshore passagemaking and singlehanded or one-couple cruising. Classic joinery is used throughout the boat, conveying a warm and comfortable ambiance.

Headroom is 6 feet in the main cabin and 5’10 in the forward cabin.

Lighting is from 19 Frigast LED lights, with a mixture of domes and ones mounted on flexible, directable arms. Light and ventilation come from a mid-hatch and forward hatch. Further ventilation is provided by two large Dorade vents.

A special battery box has been built in the port side, keeping that weight low and in the middle of the boat and making the house batteries immediately accessible. The Dickinsen diesel heater sits forward next to the bulkhead, providing ample heat for the entire boat. To starboard is a sea berth complete with a leeboard that is stored for easy and immediate access below.

To starboard is a standup chart table, with storage in the locker below. The water heater is also in that locker.  The electrical panels are located at the aft end of the chart table behind closing louvered locker doors.

To port is the galley with a solid surface countertop and large sink with both pressure and non-pressure faucets. There is a four burner Force 10 gimballed stove and a Vitrofrigo refrigerator. The aft counter opens up to access the main battery switch and battery isolator.

Deck and Hull

Toroa ’s purposeful decks are set up for comfortable and safe offshore sailing. The solid stern pulpit extends forward of the cockpit to the boarding gate. Side decks are comfortable to walk on and the handrails provide extra security. The liferaft is stored on the cabin top.

Forward, there are two anchor rollers set into the bowsprit and a Muir windlass. The caprails glisten with varnish. The recently painted topsides are a beautiful deep navy blue.

The secure cockpit is big enough for comfort in port and small enough for security at sea. The collapsible wheel opens up the aft end of the cockpit. The arch for the radar, wind generator and antennae puts that equipment well above the crew’s head where they do the most effective yet are out of the way.

The full keel and attached rudder enhance directional stability and the centerboard allows good windward performance. The hull is a-hand laid E-Glass laminate and the deck is foam cored.

Toroa ’s high quality teak decks are in good condition and have been well maintained.

SY Toroa Departs Port Whangarei

The stunning Mini-Superyacht Toroa was recently farewelled from the Port Whangarei Marine Centre , New Zealand following a 12 month stay. She was housed under cover in Bay 2, one of the marine centres extensive refit and storage sheds during which time she had extensive maintenance carried out by Oceania Marine Refit Services and specialist sub-contractors.

Toroa is a 22m custom sailing sloop launched in 2017 in Maine by Brooklin Boat Yard. She was designed by Spain’s Botin Partners, who are reputed for their classic wooden boats, the extremely high-tech vessel is designed for open-ocean cruising at the highest possible speed, but also features comfortable accommodations and cruising amenities.

Toroa is constructed out of wood, carbon fibre foam and epoxy composites. Toroa is a high performance yacht with a plumb bow, wide beam running well aft, T-bulb (lifting) keel and twin rudders. If you ignore the carbon fibre boom and black carbon standing rigging on the 28m tall mast, the boat could easily be mistaken for a classic.

This was the first complete hull that Brooklin Boat Yard built using above-room-temperature, thermo-setting resin. They invented a large insulated blanket heated with hot water running through a matrix of tubes. The blanket could be draped over the hull, and concentrated heat exactly where it was needed, while the work crew monitored the process

Racers designed by the Botin Partners commonly go faster than the speed of the wind driving them, with the boats sometimes reaching 16 – 25 knots.

The goal of all this engineering for speed is light weight, great stability, and extreme strength. The hull gets extra stability from a 4.5m, 6800kg lifting T-bulb keel and twin rudders. (the keel can be raised using hydraulics to a mere 2.75m.) There is also water ballast. A total of 1,100 litres of water, most of it direct from the ocean, some of it in the fresh water tanks, can be pumped sideways to tanks in the windward bilges. In the world of fast sailing, providing that nothing structural fails, stability equals speed.

The carbon-fibre bowsprit, which is expected to account for the strain of multiple thousands of square feet of sail, weighs in at only 20kg. The Nitronic steel bobstay takes the major vertical load.

The owners wanted a boat that did not require a huge crew. Hydraulic winches control the sail trim, while hydraulic rams provide the power to raise and lower the keel, move the traveler, and adjust the backstays and boom vang.  Toroa ’s hydraulics, custom-built by the Italian firm Cariboni, feature a relatively small diesel donkey engine, rather than the ship’s batteries, this drives the hydraulic pump.

Toroa is travelling to Auckland to meet the international transporter ship to make her journey back to her home port of Maine

Dustin knew at a young age that his entire life was going to revolve around the ocean, so much so that he attended California Maritime Academy and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Transportation with a minor in Marine Engineering. Upon graduating he immediately signed on as Third Officer aboard the 495’ oil tanker, Baltimore, navigating the waters from British Columbia in the Pacific to New England and everywhere in between, including 2 passages through the Panama Canal. It was during a visit to the shipyard in Veracruz, Mexico when he met the love of his life and future wife, Citlalli Nicolas Vazquez. Suddenly the ocean was no longer his one true love. Now he had to find a way to continue working on the ocean with Citlalli “Alli” by his side. It was then that he decided to transition to dive boats, moving to Hawaii to captain the live-aboard dive vessel, Kona Aggressor II, in the hopes Alli would be able to join him in Hawaii. It was there that Dustin became a PADI professional and fell in love with teaching scuba diving. Alli was born in the commercial port of Veracruz, Mexico. Even though she was near the water most of her life she didn’t learn how to swim until the age of 23! Her childhood was spent mostly in the kitchen with her mother helping her bake bread for her pastry business. If Alli wasn’t helping in the kitchen she was singing and performing as a traditional folkloric dancer representing the customs of Mexico. As a child Alli´s parents would play American rock and roll music, something that helped her learn English and started her love of different cultures and different languages. In 2006, Alli graduated college with a degree in foreign languages and became an English teacher. She taught kindergarten through elementary school for 3 years until a ship carrying her future husband arrived to port and her life changed forever. In 2010 Alli left her home and everything she knew to work side by side with Dustin as a Stewardess and later as a Chef. During that time she became an avid swimmer, a PADI Advanced Open Water Diver, and even a Level 1 Freediver! When she is not in the galley she loves taking guests on snorkeling adventures. In 2011 Alli and Dustin were blessed with the opportunity to embark as a team aboard the yacht, TOROA. ´TOROA has taken us over 50,000 nautical miles and over 20 countries, all while allowing us to develop our skills as professional mariners and excellent stewards of our vessel and our environment.´ In 2018 Alli became a US citizen and in 2021 she became a US Coast Guard licensed Captain, two of her proudest accomplishments. ´We are proud of what we have achieved as Captain and crew of TOROA. Working with the same owner for almost 12 years has proven our ability to maintain a luxury yacht to the highest standards whilst building a trusting relationship with owner and guests. We take pride in our work and look forward to proving that on our next command of a luxury sailing catamaran.´ Captain Dustin Bumgardner QUALIFICATIONS USCG Third Mate Unlimited Ton (RET) USCG MASTER 200 Ton International Certificate of Competency (IDC) RYA Day Skipper American Red Cross Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED Provider PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor Chef Alli Bumgarnder QUALIFICATIONS USCG Master 100 Ton STCW Basic Safety Training RYA Sailing Competent Crew American Red Cross Adult & Pediatric First Aid CPR/AED Provider Mega Yacht Interior Operations Flower Arrangement & Care PADI Advanced Open Water Free Diver Level 1

Dustin and Alli - We cannot thank you enough for everything you´ve done for our family this past week. There was not one detail that was overlooked - the amazing food, the wonderful itinerary and your hospitality has been something we will remember forever. Our family has never taken a trip like this on a boat, and now we are spoiled - don´t think anything else can top it! We are sad to go home, but are deeply appreciative for such a wonderful vacation. We hope to be back on La Sirena in the future! Many Thanks, ♥️ Melanie, Laurence, May, Harry, Merritt, Lawson

Dear Dustin + Alli, Thank you for a wonderful family vacation, we will have memories for a lifetime! The scuba diving was awesome and every mealtime and cocktail were tasty and a treat to look forward to. Thanks for feeding my boys! Each daily excursion was a blast and I hope to have a wonderful trip album. You both are enthusiastic and wonderful crew to have! The boys enjoyed all of the watersports and the freedom to drive the dinghy. A true paradise for teenagers (food + activities! ). And so many cool sea creatures...especially our nighttime tarpon watches. Thank you! ♥️ Kelly, Andy, Brady + Stephen Orlando, Florida P.S La Sirena rocks!

Dear Dustin and Alli, You guys made this trip unforgettable. It was fun trying new foods, there were many firsts on this boat, even if some of them were hard to believe (take the apple pie for example). Watching you two sail was pretty cool since I´ve never been on a boat with sails. This trip was the perfect vacation, from seeing all sorts of wildlife, to just laughing and having a good time together. We will cherish all the memories we had on this trip. My grandparents celebrating their 25th anniversary was made special. They got to look back 25 years ago and remember certain things they did. Thank you for making everything seem magical. And thank you Alli for making me and Wes separate dishes. My expectations were blown away. And thank you Dustin for doing your best to answer all our questions. Again, I´m so grateful for you two, it´s been a wonderful time for my family! Love, Alexa and Wes Captain Dustin + Alli, You guys know the BVI like no one else. Great Job! Alli, you´re a fantastic chef and made us feel comfortable. Thank you, Jack

Dustin + Alli, What a beautiful boatload of memories we take with us at the end of this journey aboard La Sirena! Thank you for your exceptional hospitality + care. The menu was impossible to resist, even knowing we´d spend the week in swimsuits ! Hopefully we´ll be aboard again soon! ♥️ Momo + Gregg from Wyoming Dustin + Alli - This was such a wonderful first time experience for us. We loved the food & drinks (Alli work on that cookbook!) and all the beautiful places and things we saw. You two are just wonderful people & getting to know you two was extra special! Brooks & Maggie Alli + Dustin, Many thanks for a wonderful week in the BVI. We look forward to another trip with you. Thank you for everything. Janet Phillips

Dear Dustin + Alli, You are the best crew we have ever had . Our trip was exceptional! Alli, thank you for all the amazing meals. They were fresh, healthy, and the variety was so much fun. We did not want to eat onshore because we knew the best meals would be by Alli. Dustin was so good at picking sites where we could both snorkel and dive at the same time. I would highly recommend you to anyone who wants to discover scuba. Words cannot express how grateful we are for everything you did for us. We are so grateful to have met you both and hope to see you again some day. With great appreciation, Rhonda, Todd, Wendy, Charles, Robin and Troy Dear Dustin & Alli, We want to thank you for your exceptional service and so blessed to have shared a wonderful week exploring all that the BVI´s has to offer. Dustin, the stops you took us to were so fun and Alli your meals were superb! We hope to run into you two again! All the Best, Love - Charles & Wendy

Dear Dustin + Alli, We cannot thank you enough for making Craig´s 40th birthday trip the trip of a lifetime! Every detail was perfectly planned and executed - the food, the experiences, the fun! Some of our favorite memories from the week included scuba diving the Rhone (Craig), snorkeling (Carson), driving the dinghy (Weston), visiting remote beaches (Jackie), and best of all, the fantastic bonfire birthday celebration! You are both hardworking, genuine, attentive, warm people, and we couldn´t have picked a better crew for our family! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts! - The Sikora Family Glen Ellyen, IL Woo Hoo Dustin and Alli, This was a marvelous and such fun adventure on La Sirena! Dustin and Alli were an absolute delight to sail with. They were friendly and easy to talk to. They shared so much wonderful knowledge about many different topics with all the guests on board. They made everyone feel at home. From the time we stepped aboard until the time we departed, we were pampered. Dustin and Alli went above and beyond the call of duty. They are an outstanding couple and they do a great job. La Sirena is a beautiful yacht. It was perfect for our group. It was spotless from top to bottom and well ventilated. Our rooms were made up every day and our bathrooms were cleaned. The towels were folded creatively and made a beautiful presentation as you entered the room as well. There were too many fabulous things on this yacht to have a favorite. We loved it all! The food was not only delicious but it was presented beautifully. Alli is an amazing chef. I couldn’t tell you a favorite meal as each one was spectacular. They did a great job with our menu. We happened to be celebrating our anniversaries while we were on the boat. Alli and Dustin decorated with banners, had heart shaped sunglasses, and red napkins that were folded into roses on our table. This made us feel so special. This is just one example of the many little extras Alli put forth to make her table settings gorgeous. She’s a rock star! Dustin’s itinerary was stellar! We did so many amazing things in the short time we were on board. He made this such a memorable time and did a phenomenal job adjusting our schedule for weather related things such as swells that might interfere with a certain location. The time and effort he spent on making our outings perfect was much appreciated. He is a great captain! -The Coles

TOROA According to the ‘sales pitch’ given to Toroa’s new owner, Brian Simpson, she was built by Chas Bailey & Sons in the 1950’s. Approx. 26′ long & built of kauri. Toroa spent it’s life in Auckland until Brian moved it to Taupo 5 months ago. Any information about it’s history would be much appreciated.

Hi Brian – email some photos to the address below . Cheers Alan [email protected]

After 6 1/2 years we’ve just had Toroa out of the Lake for a repaint and antifoul. Looking realy good again after a couple of years of neglect which had her looking very scruffy, my disgrace!

Where is the old photo taken? The boat on the right is of interest to me, the owner doesn’t have any history on it

She is a Gem! Nice to have team work on a project. If you would like to email us- [email protected]

She already has the sander and full face respirator! We’re dechroming all the fittings and removing the anti foul from the bronze below water level but haven’t come up with a clear coat suitable for below the waterline. There are antifoul products available but seems they all colour props, rudder etc. yellow? Any clear options that you know of please?

You could could ensure she is given a delux Rotex RO 150 Feq- plus Orbital Sander complete with Starmax Vac, Full Face Respirator, Excel flat Paint Brush & Roller kit for her Christmas present. She would Love that. Pam

Brian’s wife Judy is a real treasure. The other day she was polishing the bronze skeg between the deadwood and the rudder. Beat that1!

Start sanding and you shall probably see what colours she has been. Don’t be tempted to use dark colours as the planking is vulnerable to changes in temperature. Go for pastel like shades, off white, white, colours that shan’t draw the heat.

This photo is of great interest. Wife Judy wanted to paint the hull black but I was convinced that white was the way to go, and probably the original colour but it would now seem that’s not so. Anyone know what her original colour was please?

I’ve just located the document I mentioned. It’s a piece of graph paper headed “Coast Guard Cutter Toroa” and shows Compass headings and deviations and at the foot, “R. Richards, C. Todd Jan ’66. I also have a letter from Salthouse Marine Brokers to Walter Keen of Glendowie indicating Toroa was sold for $42,000, perhaps to someone named John? I have later invoices to a John Cheswass of Papakura for fees to Half Moon Bay Marina, one dated April 1999 and one December 2002.

Ha! That’s awesome!, I feel like ‘ mum chook ‘ amongst you lot.

That’s a realy neat photo look at the line up of handsome young men. Toroa looks good with a contrasting colour on her hull. I don’t feel her new window shape has detracted too much from her looks (one wouldn’t want to make them any bigger though 🙂 I like the mast forward, flag pole aft, balancing her out. Pam

You asked Pam – you get. photo added

It would be nice to see a photo of her when the coastguard had her.

Harold is correct with this Toroa. A 28-foot displacement launch, she was purchased in 1966 at the cost of 4000 pounds with the assistance of the ASB Bank and the Golden Kiwi lottery. Toroa was used principally as the training vessel and yacht patrol boat in place of Lady Rangi, but was sold in 1968 with the disbanding of the Headquarters Divison. From the book Deeds Not Worlds, The New Zealand Coastguard

The windows with the rubber surrounds are a later modification when the windows were enlarged. The originals looked great but as usual ” improvements” happen. She lived on the marina at leader boat builders for many years and was brought by Mike after she had sat for a year or two without moving. She is beautifully build and the systems are well thought out. It will be wonderful to see her being used again.

No I’m not up with the play on that, have spoken to an auto glass guy to do it for me. I’ll certainly post more photos as we progress.

I guess you would know the little techniques of getting the windows out and then in again.? I hope you follow up with more photos later. Luv to see her out on the lake!

Yes this phota was taken in May this year when Toroa first arrived in Taupo. I am part way through renovation and yes still has old rubber seals around windows. I’m about to remove the windows for paint and will relpace all seals then. And yes she is a luvly wee chubby thing!

I think you’re right. I have some kind of old document at home that may confirm that but am away from home at present. I’ll hunt it up in the next couple of days. Thanks for your input.

Detracting from her history here but is this a recent photo of her. I notice she seems to have the older style rubber seal around the windows still. Interesting that the lower rub rail is carrying through to the bow. She’s a luvly wee chubby thing! Pam

There have been many TOROAs but I think this one may have been the TOROA that was bought by Coastguard in 1966 and used until 1968 as a patrol boat and training vessel.

Guide to Tortola

A luxurious playground for yacht enthusiasts

As the capital of the British Virgin Islands , Tortola is centered in one of the most spectacular cruising areas in the Caribbean Sea and lies in close proximity to Puerto Rico and Saint Thomas . Deemed as the charter capital of the Caribbean, Tortola’s harbor is always stocked with opulent superyachts that are ready to embark on a dreamy summer vacation.

Among Tortola’s sharp peaks and bougainvillea-clad hillsides you’ll find an abundance of splendid places to explore. The hustle and bustle of the island capital of Road Town is an undoubted highlight, bursting with colorful houses dotting it’s lush undulating landscape, the walk through the town opens opportunities to view the local boutiques, bars and restaurants.

A yacht charter is the ultimate way to explore these Caribbean waters, with a relishing cool breeze making for calm and tranquil sailing. Sports enthusiasts will adore the array of opportunities to snorkel, surf, dive and hike before heading to a beach bar for a refreshing cocktail or a bite of freshly caught seafood. Find a spot of paradise to call your own as you anchor down at Cane Garden Bay. The picture perfect cove is a popular yacht anchorage with calm azure waters and a crescent of white sand for beach lovers to relax on.

Step away from the sand just long enough to discover Tortola's history with a visit to the Callwood's Rum Distillery, J.R. O'Neal Botanic Gardens and Old Government House Museum, each providing something a little different to see and do during your charter vacation. Nature enthusiasts must take a visit to the gorgeous botanic gardens which were established in 1979, boastin four acres of pure beauty, the gardens include a lush array of indigenous and exotic tropical plants, considered by many to be among the finest in the Caribbean. Be sure to taste rum from the oldest continuously operating distillery in the Eastern Caribbean, the perfect ending to a day exploring the history of Tortola.

If you enjoy hiking, there are an abundance of excellent landscapes that are popular on the island. Make sure you visit Sage Mountain National Park, at 1716 feet, Sage Mountain rises higher than any other peak in the Virgin Islands. Tortola Yachting Season

Tortola’s peak yacht charter season begins in late fall and runs to early spring. December to late-March is prime time for Tortola yacht charters, although yachting takes place year-round. Christmas and New Year’s are also popular times for Tortola yacht charters; book well advance ahead of the holidays.

Cruising Conditions

During the winter, the weather is incredible. Temperatures hover in the mid-70s, and the water temperatures match, averaging about 75 degrees.

In the winter and spring, easterly trade winds provide a steady breeze of 7 to 15 knots, although they can sometimes reach 20 knots. You may also encounter swells on the northern shores and anchorages in the winter months. This makes winter a great time for sailing or catamaran charters in Tortola.

Tortola Yacht Charters – Things to Do & See

Long Bay Tortola

Tortola is a beautiful oasis in the Caribbean that offers a full itinerary of activities, tours and explorations for yacht charter guests. Whether Tortola is a stop on your yacht charter, or you’ll be spending a few days before boarding, the islands is your playground. Some of the must-see sites include:

Quito’s Gazebo – Located in beautiful Cane Garden Bay, Quito’s is a must-visit destination for live music. Nearly every night, Quito’s beachside bar features live reggae music, with refreshing cocktails always on tap. Plus, the restaurant, luxury inn and spa are all the more reason to visit Quito’s.

Cane Garden Bay – A stunning horseshoe-shaped beach on Tortola’s north coast, Cane Garden Bay offers a tranquil respite for visitors. The protected bay is a favorite BVI yachting destination, and the warm waters are a watersports mecca. After a day in the water, enjoy the sunset from one of Cane Garden Bay’s famous beach bars.

Fireball Full Moon Parties – Every month, the Trellis Bay Kitchen & Cyber Café hosts one of Tortola’s best parties. These Full Moon celebrations feature a bumping mix of Fungi and reggae music, and kicks off with a West Indian feast. Stick around for the stilt walkers and sculpture fires on the beach.

Josiah’s Bay – Tortola’s East End is home to several beaches, but the best is Josiah’s Bay Beach. This stretch of sand is perfect for sunbathers looking to relax. Yet, the real draw is the surf; in winter the swells arrive, and surfers from across the island take flight in the bay’s warm water.

Sage Mountain National Park – Mount Sage towers above Tortola. And a visit to the island wouldn’t be complete without a hike to the top. The National Park is a verdant oasis, with a network of trails crisscross the often-misty rainforest. At the top of the mountain, you’ll be treated to postcard-worthy views of the surrounding and sparkling Apple Bay.

Rum Distillery Tour – The Caribbean produces the world’s best rums, and on Tortola, you’ll one of the best places to try this favorite spirit. Callwood Distillery , the world’s oldest rum distillery, was once a hangout for pirates. Today, it produces a variety of rums, and offers tastings and tours on its historic grounds.
