This time we brought another couple with us. Both of us were celebrating anniversaries. That comes with free champagne (or non-alcoholic bubbly). I love that the meal comes spread over a bit of time - champagne, bread (made in house), a lemon sorbet palate cleanser, then the main course. The steaks are fantastic, and always make me moan in delight. After the meal, they bring around a dessert tray with several options for house-made treats. Yum! And then a hot scented towel comes with a chocolate covered strawberry. It's truly a lovely experience. Unfortunately, it's a pricey one, so we can't do it too often, but well worth it when we are celebrating. More info Lake Elmo Inn $$$ $ Price: Expensive • Continental • Lake Elmo • 4.8

The rabbit hole winding down to Wonderland is not always located in a whimsical secret garden or magical fairytale book. The most mystical and enchanting places can sometimes be found in the form of exquisite, luxurious cuisine. In fact, the road to Wonderland is not down, but rather up—16 floors to be exact. Pinpointed on top of the Smolenskaya Square in Moscow Russia, The White Rabbit restaurant guides guests into another realm.

This White Rabbit attracts individuals from all over the world and has earned the restaurant the 25th spot on the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list, with head chef and owner Vladimir Mukhin ranked the 9th best chef by the Best Chef Awards. Also featured on the Netflix show Chef’s Table , many regarded The White Rabbit to be the best restaurant Russia. Yes, this restaurant is in the top dining location in the largest country in the world.

A White Rabbit dish

Vladimir Mukhin is no stranger to fine dining and delectable taste. He began his journey as a chef at the age of 12 by working alongside his father. Frustrated by the lack of acknowledgement and homage to traditional Russian cuisine, Mukhin hit the books and discovered classic Russian recipes dating back hundreds of years that his ancestors had once cooked. He then combined these dishes with modern takes inspired by other European cities. With the collaboration of restaurateur Boris Zarkov, the White Rabbit opened its doors in 2012 and has served as a popular destination for tourists and locals ever since.

Guests are swept up 16 stories in a private elevator decorated like a forest, which separates the rest of the building from the restaurant. Right upon entry, guests will notice the eccentric Alice in Wonderland themed as exhibited by various white rabbit paintings and figures. Whimsical touches such as youth-like purple and blue lighting and multiple glass chandeliers contribute to the theme in a tasteful way. Panoramic windows within a sleek glass dome offer impressive views of Moscow. Whether you choose to dine in the afternoon or evening, these sweeping views enhance the overall experience.

White Rabbit

Moscow, Russia

Boundless creativity with Russian ingredients from Moscow’s most famous chef

White Rabbit

On the Pass

Vladimir Mukhin

Pastry Chef

Boris Mizurov

What makes it special: With a spectacular 360-degree view of Moscow from its 16th-floor dining room, White Rabbit is the best place in the capital for dining with a view. But it is also the place to come for Vladimir Mukhin’s inventive cuisine using Russian ingredients – think swan liver pâté with torched marshmallow or baked cabbage with caviar.

Who is Vladimir Mukhin? A fifth-generation cook, Mukhin began his career at 12 years old in the kitchen of the restaurant where his father worked. He trained at La Barone in France, El Celler de Can Roca in Spain and Khajimi in Japan, before opening White Rabbit in 2012. In 2017 he founded IKRA, Russia’s first international gastronomy festival, and the same year he starred in Netflix’s hit documentary series Chef’s Table.

About the décor: Opulent, colourful and playful, the main dining room sits under a domed glass roof and features turquoise, yellow and red velvet sofas and cosy curved booths. Guests get their first taste of the Alice in Wonderland theme when they enter the elevator, which is painted to look like the doors to a mysterious room. Weird and wonderful rabbit-themed art adorns the restaurant, including giant Russian dolls, or matryoshka, with white rabbits in their arms.

On the menu: Since reopening after the pandemic, there is just one tasting menu on offer: Metamorphoses, which includes flashes of Mukhin’s colour-forward, idiosyncratic style and mastery of Russian ingredients. Highlights include mussels, Yalta onions and apple mash; scallop, pear and seaweed sauce; and caramel tomatoes with avocado mousse. The à la carte majors in well-prepared seafood, with lighter salads and an excellent selection of grills, led by the huge beef Tomahawk, perfect for sharing.

Other ventures: The White Rabbit Family, which is owned by Mukhin and his partners, now has 21 restaurants. It includes Mukhin’s even more creative Chef’s Table, located in the same building as White Rabbit, which hosts guest chef takeovers and pop-ups. Anatoly Kazakov’s sustainability-focused Selfie, voted No.65 in the 2019 extended list, is also part of the group.

OUR HISTORY

White Bear Yacht Club was founded as a Yacht Club in 1889. Famed as a Club northeast of the Twin Cities, the property sits on the shorelines of White Bear Lake and was founded by group of St. Paul sailors. By the spring of 1890, the Club had more than 42 members who paid $5 initiation fees and annual dues of $3.

Formal sailing competitions began in 1895 between the White Bear and Minnetonka clubs. On Aug. 24, 1897, the Inland Lake Yachting Association was formed between WBYC and nine other yachting clubs. Today, the association continues to honor its heritage in governing competitive sailing and creating a strong camaraderie among the sailing community.

1912 | golf is added

Many of the sailors who founded WBYC were also avid golfers and tennis players. In 1899, the club added two clay tennis courts and remodeled the clubhouse to accommodate its membership. Then in 1912, the first nine holes of the Golf Course opened for play. Several years later, the second nine opened for play.

"Awesome rolling topography. Great conditions. This is such a fun course to play on these hills."

- Golf Digest, 2021

building a legacy

Over the years of WBYC's history, famed golfers, such as Tom Vardon and Jimmy Johnston, have helped shape the legacy we've built. Tom Vardon, brother of Six-Time British Open Champion Harry, served as one of the original Golf Professionals from 1916-1937. Jimmy Johnston, a Minnesota Native and six-time Walker Cup participant, grew up playing at WBYC and is best known as the first golfer to win the U.S. Amateur west of the Mississippi, hosted at Pebble Beach Golf Links in 1929. He went on to beat Dr. O.F. Willey 4&3 in the final match.

Fine Dining Restaurants in Moscow

Café pushkin.

white bear yacht club restaurant

A Moscow institute is known for its impeccable fine dining Russian and French cuisine, the palatial Café Pushkin opened in 1999 and immediately attracted a loyal following among high society folk. Elaborately decorated to recreate the feel of a 19th-century aristocrat’s manor, Pushkin has become equally popular with tourists keen to soak up the stately atmosphere of pre-Revolution Russia. The menu features sophisticated interpretations of definitive Russian cuisine, with a nod to classical French techniques. The kitchen’s insistence on high-quality ingredients lifts well-known favourites to another level of complexity and refinement. The signature beef stroganoff consistently receives rave reviews, while the roasted rack of lamb is the ultimate in rich, meaty indulgence. Of course, a restaurant of this standing serves several varieties of caviar a selection of top-shelf vodkas fit for an emperor.

Despite its rather formal appearance, the Café Pushkin experience is utterly charming. The waiters dress like 19th-century servants and diners are treated like royalty, but not without a sense of fun and theatrics. Bookings well advance are recommended.

This Siberian restaurant is dark and traditional. The tables are lit by small lamps with tassels, while chandeliers contribute more to mood than illumination. Mournful music plays softly, the sound absorbed by the heavy tablecloths and all the soft furnishings. The menu is a treat for the adventurous. You might start with pate of polar partridge, then go for the sweet grilled meat of Altay yak with tomato and mustard sauce; or the gamey richness of minced meat of Sayan bear with cream-cowberry sauce and buckwheat.

Grand Café Dr. Zhivago

Moscow Restaurants Grand Café Dr. Zhivago

This ornate brasserie across from the Kremlin is Russian kitsch, with oversized statues, bright red chairs, white walls and colorful ceilings. It feels anachronistic, yet it’s the creation of a modern restaurateur, Alexander Rappoport.

There’s a lightness of touch in the dishes on a long menu celebrating Russian favorites from dumplings and pickled cabbage through to goose stew with cowberry. It’s especially good for breakfast, which includes more than 20 egg dishes and about a dozen types of porridge.

Price Range: Average check RUB 2,000-2,500 (US $40) Hours: Monday to Sunday 12 pm – 12 am Address: 15/1 Mokhovaya Street Nearest Metro Station: Teatralnaya Contact Details: drzhivago.ru

The exquisite interior of 1956, picturesque views, author’s kitchen – the team of the restaurant Ottepel is inviting you to appreciate design of the reconstructed historical pavilion and enjoy ingenious dishes.

Staff wear Mondrian-inspired aprons and the menu is innovative — the restaurant specializes in upgrading well-known, simple Soviet dishes into high-end cuisine. Traditional Russian cabbage soup “shchi” (420 rubles) counts calamari among its ingredients while the ubiquitous cold soup “okroshka” (360 rubles) features salty pastrami. Another trending item is the  “koryushka” served with potatoes (380 rubles). The smelt fish originates from the Baltic sea and is immensely popular in St. Petersburg. If you seek a filling meal, try chicken in Georgian “satsivi” sauce with fried polenta and cheese (610 rubles).

It’s an innovative throwback to the Soviet era, and perfectly at home in the ramblingly grandiose exhibition park of VDNH.

The word  uhvat  refers to a long-handled wooden utensil used to slide food in and out of a pechka, a wood-fired oven found in many Russian houses until the late 19th century. Uhvat is one of the restaurants leading the resurgence in traditional Slavic cooking, with slow-cooked dishes such as pumpkin  kashas  (a type of porridge) with honey and linden dressing (£3.50), baked roe with pickled bramble (£14)  schchi  soups with fermented cabbage and  chichelindas , an old recipe for pate, here made with ox tail (£5). Don’t leave without tasting  toplyonoe moloko , a thick creamy dessert made by baking milk for several hours. The pechka oven features in many Russian fairytales – the Baba Yaga witch shoves children into ovens – and takes the centre stage at Uhvat. Daily rituals, such as using goose feathers to dust out the ashes, enhance the magical atmosphere.

Art Rukav ( Rukav means sleeve) is a big platform where the free spirit of art and creativity reigns. There are art workshops, a gallery and a restaurant under the same roof. Rukav was named after the surname of the Russian sculptor Alexander Rukavishnikov.

Immersion in the world of art begins from the very first entrance through the massive decorated door. In the cloakroom you get checks in the form of drops, bright red ladders harmonize with dark sofas… There is even a pipe-shaped slide! During lunches you will surely be attracted by the details in decorating: to the stylized ware, for example, or an unusual sculpture next to your chair.

Stolovaya No. 57

Moscow restaurants Stolovaya No. 57

You might not expect to find an economy-priced cafeteria inside the stately walls of GUM, an enormous shopping centre on the Red Square specialising in luxury brands. But it seems no Muscovite (wealthy fashionistas and penny-pinching students alike) can resist cheap, simple and delicious Russian comfort fare, dished out in a quaint, Soviet-style “stolovaya” (a self-service, canteen-style eatery).

Stolovaya No. 57 serves the Russian equivalent of a home-cooked meal in a standard Russian family. Salads are super-popular here, including the mayonnaise-heavy Oliver salad and shuba (“Herring in a Fur Coat”) a layered salad of pickled herring, eggs, beets, carrots and potatoes in a creamy dressing. Also on the menu are beef stroganoff, chicken kiev and chebureki (a deep-fried, meat-filled pastry turnover).

This Canadian restaurant and juice bar is on a mission to prove that vegetarian dining can be filling, exciting and varied and does not necessarily need to involve stereotypical joss sticks, Indian tapestries and variations on the lentil. Interior-wise it’s as fresh as they come, all clean minimalist lines, favouring industrial materials and rough edges over cuddly pictures of ethnic tribes. On the food front, Fresh gets full marks for providing an experience that both vegetarians and meat-eaters can salivate over – huge wraps bursting with scrumptious goodies and noodles bowls brimming with both delicate and fiery Asian flavours are just some of the long list of hits.

Owned by Chuck Bond. I'd definitely say its one of the best places to live in Moscow. It's just off campus, affordably priced, and 'round the clock maintenance and speedy response to any issues. Extremely well maintained. Laundry facility on site and great neighbors! Nothing better than living in the Yacht Club for 3.5 years!! Chuck's amazing!

White Rabbit, Restaurant, Moscow

It’s sparkish! It’s bouncing! It’s among the “World’s 50 Best Restaurant” on place 23! It conserves the feeling of New Russia although those times are over! It’s most modern “Russian” cuisine based on a concept you could call “Back To Future”! It’s unfriendly.

Is it even worth to go there? Yes, please, do so even it is (of course) not the 23rd best restaurant of the world! As I am not a professional tester and I not sponsored by San Pelegrino ( http://www.theworlds50best.com/ ) I have the possibility to quote truthful but corybantic subjective. And in particular for this restaurant!

whiterabbit 2016 01 16 171971

“White Rabbit’s” location is fantastic: on the roof of a shopping mall close to the minister of foreign affairs at the Garden Ring (3 Smolenskaya square, 16th floor) with a great view over Moscow. But if you are not a local you may not find the entry because you stray through all different corners of the mall. Why the fuck aren’t there some signs?

Food is extremely interesting, fascinating and ambitious. The wine list is in comparison with other restaurants in Moscow very good and offers also some rare sort. The service is a catastrophe: arrogant, unfriendly and bigheaded!

The design is really a question of taste as there is a clear and even impressive concept. Nice assembled seating groups, large sofas – out of which it’s rather ambitious to eat a soup -, fresh and trendy colors.

Concept of chef Vladimir Mukhin is a modern interpretation of Russian cuisine (with some international flavors of course). This doesn’t mean a copy of existing classic dishes, it is rather audacious anticipations. Regionalism is one of the most important trends of cooking nowadays. It isn’t a surprise that this trends reached Moscow but it is an astonishment upon to which extend some genius creating unique dishes with some traditional and regional flavors and ingredients. My Russian friend Alexey Lazarenko even plunged into children memories because of the first smells of some of the courses: Odor and aroma which let him think about wet grass or marsh, summer flowers and birch grove. Light flavors of pickled mushrooms – a very typical Russian side dish – remember going on a mushroom foray late summer, the scent of heavier honey let you think of resinous bark. Really wonderful, even a little bit mystical.

If you look at White Rabbit’s webpage you can find the actual tasting set which we enjoyed. Since I broke my smartphone recently I lost all my own photos. The visual presentation at the webpage is much nicer anyhow and (honestly) truthful.

I doubt very much that there are too many guests who really appreciate this art of cooking: a creation of the fascination of “Russian” flavors. Although each little portion was so nice prepared and arranged, may be not all of them were taste wise outstanding, but all of them really exciting. The audience around us seemed to be rather dull and probably more effected by the way how food is served. (Or just by the fact that there were at “the” White Rabbit). While the waiter handed out plates he explained us what we got. In Russian and regrettably not even a short version in English. Alternatively you can follow the menu which offers a short description of each dish.

Although I am not speaking Russian, the way how waiter recite the menu is irreproducible if not even an affront against the impressive skills of the chef. It was so blasé! The opposite actually to the annoying speed in which all courses were delivered. We weren’t even finishing with our plate while the next dish flied to our table. Like we would have had the plan to eat eight or even more courses within an hour lunch time. At the end it was lot food with so many different flavors that I would have needed more and in particular longer brakes in-between. But we were fed like we would have to leave the restaurant within next fifteen minutes. Really uncomfortable!

My summary: a brilliant and very inspired chef celebrates unique cuisine in a really special location. Unfortunately some pleasure is spoiled by the service, parts of the audience and the atmosphere of the restaurant.  If the place would not have such negative side, I would give more points.

Our picks to eat and drink your way through a perfect day in White Bear Lake

There are tiki drinks, stacked scoops, fine dining and more around every charming corner of this lakeside town.

By Joy Summers

An orange cocktail with a mint leaf garnish on a wooden pole wrapped in thick rope by a bar shaped like a boat bow. The marina is visible in the background.

While it’s understandable why city dwellers would love to claim White Bear Lake as a part of the larger metro area, it’s best not to call it a suburb.

With deep roots as a home to the area’s Dakota and Ojibwe peoples and early pioneers, White Bear Lake has long been a destination for its scenic landscape and tranquil setting. In its early days, it was a flourishing resort town newly reachable by railway, lined with theaters and hotels, before segueing to an industrial hub. Today, it’s a charming small town packed with shops, restaurants and ways to enjoy the lush beauty that reaches its zenith on late summer days.

It’s also best enjoyed on foot. Park the car and wander through the mural-adorned alleyways, down twisty brick paths and up to rooftop patios. There are boats to rent, a public beach to stake out and tons of home, vintage and gift shops to explore. Stop by for a Friday farmers market and stay through a late-night cocktail or scoop of something sweet. These are our picks for the best ways to savor downtown White Bear Lake.

White Bear Lake Farmers Market

In the summer and early fall, Friday mornings are the best time to roam and wander through downtown White Bear Lake. Hit the farmers market from 8 a.m. to noon, when vendors line up with fresh produce, stacks of colorful eggs, glittering jars of honey and a few ready-to-eat goods. Janna’s Gluten Free Bakery is a cottage maker who brings a variety of gluten-free/celiac-safe goods, like this incredible cinnamon roll, to the party. Elouise Suoja of 350 Degrees Bakery brings artful sweets, cookies and cupcakes that would be perfect for a fairy princess party or enjoying solo in the car with the windows rolled down — whatever occasion best suits the moment.

Cajeta Coffee

Inside Avalon Mall is a coffee shop that feels like a hidden-gem discovery. Cajeta Coffee opened a little more than a year ago with fabulous Mexican treats and beverages. There are house specialty lattes flavored with its signature caramel sauce and one made with crushed up mazapan candy that tastes like the best kind of peanut butter-coffee combo. On the savory side, there are made-to-order breakfast burritos, conchas and more.

Bopping around downtown, you’ll find all kinds of businesses waiting to be discovered behind buildings and through alleys. PLNT BSD is a small smoothie bowl stand that can be found between the parking lot and the back of Anchor Coffee House. There are picnic tables and a little playhouse for small visitors, plus the bright and refreshing fruit-filled bowls that are blended on the spot. Part of the adventure is figuring out when they’re open; hours change weekly and are posted on Instagram .

GoodThings Café

When downtown’s beloved Grandma’s Bakery closed, it seemed like the end of morning meetups over doughnuts. But the owners of the gift shop next door stepped in to continue the tradition. GoodThings has made a business out of peddling clothes, gifts and trinkets that make people smile. That tradition aligns perfectly with spinning cake cases and wholesome baked goods. GoodThings Cafe is stocked with doughnuts, cookies and bars; savory options include soup and sandwiches. There’s a grab-and-go case, too.

Manitou Bar & Kitchen

This is the expansive ivy-covered patio that beckons from the edge of Hwy. 61. The inside is just as lovely, with an open first floor, fireplace for cozy days and a large bar well stocked with top-shelf bottles. Food is classic American fare turned up a few notches, like a blackened tuna sandwich, a bacon-adorned patty melt with black pepper aioli, or fettuccine with pesto, seasonal veggies and chicken. Flip-flops are welcome, but it also works for a night out with someone special, dressed in your fancy jeans.

Margaux’s Table

Perhaps downtown’s most exclusive dining opportunity, Margaux’s Table serves what’s in season and what owner Margaret Doran is cooking for the month. To get a jump on menus, hours and reservations, subscribe to her monthly newsletter or follow the restaurant on social media. Past meals have included dishes like grilled prosciutto-wrapped figs over salad and pan-seared scallops with oven-crisped potatoes. Staying intentionally small gives Margaux’s Table the freedom to make every meal an occasion, but because of its size and exclusivity, there isn’t a liquor license; diners are encouraged to BYOB to pair with the meal. Note that it’s cash or check only.

4742 Washington Square, White Bear Lake; follow Margaux’s Table on Facebook.

Brickhouse Food & Drink

There are so many reasons to choose the Brickhouse, a sleek family-owned restaurant in the heart of Washington Square: breakfast through dinner; cocktails and casual beers; rooftop patio and intimate corners for quiet conversation. And there are pork ribs that are worth planning an entire day around. Offered as an appetizer, lunch and dinner entree, these sticky, crunchy tender ribs are all things at once — just like the restaurant. The crunchy almost molasses-candy exterior gives way to the tender, lush meat beneath. The restaurant gives big fine-dining energy, with thoughtful architecture befitting the historic space that mixes raw brick with good lighting. At its heart, this is a neighborhood hang for any moment of the day with a modern American menu. But don’t miss out on those ribs.

Washington Square Bar & Grill

Here’s another all-day neighborhood spot right in the middle of all the action. The expansive menu is Mexican-ish — it bills itself as “truly eclectic” — but there’s no arguing that a plate of taquitos and a pint glass dripping with condensation from the cold beverage it’s holding makes a person feel like they’re living inside a Kenny Chesney summer banger. Wait times can require patience during busy nights, but the seats are perfect for stretching out and basking in the good times that can only come from long days by the lake. There’s a dog menu on the patio, daily specials, happy hour and occasional live music, too.

The Alchemist

Even the most perfect lake day can reach a point where a break from the sun is a nice respite. The Alchemist offers a dark and moody space for cooling off by way of a chilled cocktail glass. This den of fine drinkery opened in 2015 with a steampunk vibe that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Grab a seat at the bar to talk mixology with the staff, or dip deeper into the room and find a cool corner lit by flickering faux candlelight for a quiet moment and creative (and stiff) drinks. There’s beer, wine, ciders and a menu of shareables and flatbreads, too.

Orso Bianco Gelato

Born from a deep love of Italy’s favorite frozen treat, this small shop offers several flavors of gelato. It’s a perfect excuse for a cup of affogato : espresso poured over a scoop of gelato for a sweet pick-me-up while wandering through downtown. They also sell pints of gelato to go, and ready-made s’mores kits for late summer and early fall evening campfires. Watch their social media for special hours; they open a little bit early on some market days.

SweetLife Lane

Sprinkle in a little imagination and the twisty brick path to get to this shop feels like a real-life stroll through Candy Land. The store is filled with every kind of candy and treat that a kid-at-heart could want. There are dark chocolate-covered potato chips, dill pickle-flavored fudge, gum drops, candy buttons and so much more. Load up on sugary treats for now, later and way later — for that sneaky spot in the house the kids don’t know about.

Sweets by Brickhouse

With all the exuberance of a cannonball off the back of the boat, Sweets by Brickhouse opened this year behind and below the Brickhouse restaurant. It’s an ice cream scoop shop that makes waffle cones on site, plus there’s a daily selection of treats made by the Brickhouse’s pastry chef. There are sundaes, milkshakes and other showstopping dishes. Order up the Unicorn Sundae, a little kid’s sugar dream come to life: scoops of dairy-free sorbets are topped with a twisty lollipop, cotton candy and a candy necklace. On a recent visit, there were mochi cakes, chocolate chip cookies and a super-friendly and engaging staff at the ready with samples.

Cup and Cone

These frosty treats are best enjoyed with a little sand stuck between your toes and skin that’s spent the day absorbing the summer sun. Everyone has their favorite, from the soft serve flavor of the day to ice cream sandwiches to hoagies, at this stand that’s been open since 1973. For the uninitiated, start with a cone that’s absolutely covered in sprinkles. Because the best summer days deserve a 1-to-1 ice cream-sprinkles ratio.

Alleycat’s Gourmet Sandwiches

An expertly built sandwich is a titan of food beauty, and those who dedicate their lives to its construction really ought to be celebrated. Alleycat’s Gourmet Sandwiches puts thought and care into every ingredient stacked on great bread in a quick-serve, no-fuss setting. There are variations on standards like the club and a truly spicy Nashville chicken, but to really feel like sandwich royalty order up the 3 Million Dollar Sandwich (that’s actually only $12.80). It stacks up beef brisket, melted cheddar, thinly sliced red onion and the housemade 3 million Dollar Sauce. Eat at one of the few seats inside, picnic tables by the parking lot, or make it a lakeside picnic at nearby Lions Park.

Even after more than a decade in White Bear Lake , Acqua remains one of the hottest dinner reservations in town. The cozy two-story house has seats inside, but the coveted spots are on the front deck and the shoreline patio. Situated around a giant old tree, it’s an ideal setting for summer nights as the sun dips and fresh Italian fare is served. With an exceptional wine list and attentive service, it’s no wonder why people can’t get enough. Plus, for those with gluten sensitivities, the menu is almost entirely gluten-free — or can be made that way. (One of the owners has celiac disease, and they take that seriously.) The menu is stacked with fresh seafood fare and a few dishes for those who prefer land-harvested foodstuffs. Blue crabcakes are almost entirely hunks of crab, and the nightly specials are a fun way to sample the seasonal creativity of the kitchen.

Fresh seafood and water views go hand in hand. On warm evenings, the outdoor deck at Mizu is lined with diners enjoying sashimi and sushi while eyeing the lake’s horizon and the occasional hot air balloon rising above the distant shoreline. Mizu is a sister restaurant to nearby Acqua, but the cuisine is dedicated to a different part of the world. This is the spot to visit for yakisoba, ramen, classic rolls and other Japanese bar snacks. Speaking of bar, there’s also a selection of sake and cool cocktails. The setting pairs nicely with a yuzu whiskey sour.

Tally’s Dockside

Even if you can’t live the big-boat-on-the-lake life, you can rent it at Tally’s, a landmark that’s been around since the city’s resort heyday. If that’s not in the cards, just order up some barbecue and boat drinks at its C.G. Hooks Eatery and Surfboard Bar. This open-air venue right on the water very much gives off Jimmy Buffett-approved vibes, with thick ropes and bar tops fashioned to look like boats. Order at the bar for quickly mixed tiki classics like mai tais, bourbon-forward lowballs, mojitos or just an ice-cold local beer. Even if you’re staying on land, it’s easy to close your eyes and lean into the lake winds and imagine there’s a pontoon slow-sloshing beneath your feet.

4441 Lake Av. S., White Bear Lake; cghooks.com

Admiral D’s

There’s a singular joy of ferrying cheese curds from basket to waiting mouth while sitting right on top of the water. Admiral D’s deck is a summer rite of passage with a simple menu of snacks, salads, sandwiches and tacos alongside a bar that boasts slushies, mojitos, margaritas and more — like an appealing aperol spritz. There are late-night drink specials, and music nights include live bands and DJs dedicated to yacht rock. If the surroundings leave you yearning for a pontoon ride, there are rentals here, too.
