Sailboat Review: New Models from Bali Catamaran

  • By Mark Pillsbury

Bali 4.6

When Cruising World ’s Boat of the Year judges step aboard a new sailboat, the first thing they ask the builder for is the boat’s design brief. Racing? Bluewater voyaging? Coastal cruising? Chartering? Daysailing? What’s the boat built to do?

In the case of two new Bali Catamarans , introduced to North America this past fall during the United States Sailboat Show in Annapolis, Maryland, the manufacturer’s intent seemed perfectly clear: These cats were built for hanging out on the water with family and friends, or perhaps for owners interested in putting them into a charter fleet to help pay the bills. “Pampered crew” were two words that came immediately to mind when I stepped aboard.

Both cats—the Bali 4.6 and Bali Catspace—were conceived of by Olivier Poncin, founder of the Catana Group, and designed by the in-house team that has been building well-respected performance catamarans at their yard in France for nearly four decades now.

When I think about Catana Catamarans, features such as daggerboards, sleek hulls and powerful sail plans designed to gobble up ocean miles come immediately to mind. When I think about Bali, my mind turns to comfortable surroundings and tropical anchorages, with soothing trade winds blowing through the saloon and multiple places to lounge in the sun or shade.

The Catana Group launched the Bali brand in 2014, on the company’s 30th anniversary. At the time, the multihull market was exploding, and while Catana had a strong following at the performance end of the speed-comfort continuum, their boats were expensive and geared to a niche market. Balis, on the other hand, were designed and built to be “more accessible in terms of price,” the company’s online brochure notes, and “therefore aimed at a wider clientele.” It’s no accident that many of those clients chose to add their Balis to charter fleets in the Caribbean and other tropical spots around the world. As a result, the brand took off, to the point where today, it takes up the bulk of Catana’s production capacity.

The 4.6 and Catspace share many of the same features found across the Bali Range: solid composite foredecks rather than the trampolines found on most catamarans; multiple spaces to kick back and relax; home-style refrigerators in the galleys; large sliding windows on the cabin sides; and garage-style doors that open and lift overhead aft in the saloon, making it difficult to discern where the interior stops and the great outdoors begins.

The sail-away prices of the boats we visited in Annapolis were $920,000 for the 4.6 and $550,000 for the Catspace. In all, Bali manufactures seven sailing models and two power cats, so buyers have options when it comes to size and price.

Bali hulls and decks are resin-infused and foam-cored, which makes them strong and stiff while saving weight. Throughout the range, Balis are built with short, fixed keels, affixed to relatively beamy hulls that have abundant load-carrying capacity. In practice, that means the boats can be loaded with gear such as air conditioning, appliances and generators—and toys and provisions for all the crew.

With a length overall of 44 feet, 6 inches, the 4.6 presents a number of interesting features and options. First, there is the flybridge, set atop the cockpit Bimini and a portion of cabin top abaft the mast. It can be reached via steps on either side deck. A helm station is to port, with a bench that seats two comfortably. Adjacent to it is a good-size table with L-shaped seating around it, and sun beds behind. The wheel itself is mounted on a pedestal, and there’s room to walk in front, between it and the winches mounted on the cabin top. With this arrangement, there’s room for the crew to jump in and help trim sails, though without helpers, it does require the skipper to rely on the autopilot when leaving the helm to tend to sheets.

Underway, I liked the setup. There was good visibility, both around the boat and also of the mainsail overhead, thanks to a window in the canvas Bimini. The main was simple to control using the double-ended sheet led to blocks on the corners of the flybridge, replacing the traveler. The arrangement is especially good for jibing.

In a good breeze, 10 to 12 knots, our speed over the ground hovered right around 5 knots; we added a knot to that when we bore off to a beam reach. If I bought the boat and didn’t have plans to put it into charter, I’d definitely add a code zero to my sail arsenal.

Down below, I liked the layout of the saloon as well. With the sliding windows and overhead door open, I had the feeling of being outside, sitting in the shade. The dining table is to port; two chairs are opposite. Forward of the table is an L-shaped galley to port with loads of counter space; a large fridge and freezer sits opposite, with a proper nav station tucked forward, surrounded by windows and adjacent to the centerline door leading to another lounge area on the foredeck.

Depending on how the boat will be used, there are a few different layouts for the staterooms and heads, ranging from a three-stateroom version, where the entire starboard hull is the owner’s en suite, to four- and even five-stateroom layouts. In the latter, access to the port aft stateroom is by a companionway from the cockpit, and a stateroom with bunk beds is amidships, with a third stateroom forward. Crew berths in either forepeak are also available.

The 4.6 we tested in Annapolis was powered by a pair of 57 hp Yanmars with saildrives; 45 hp Yanmars are standard.

Bali Catspace

A t just over 37 feet length overall, the Catspace is one of the smaller production cats available these days. It also has an airy feeling in the saloon’s dining and lounging area, thanks to a similar aft door arrangement. But space doesn’t permit a second door to the foredeck. Instead, there’s a larger center window that opens to let in the breeze, and the galley (including a full-size fridge) is in the forward starboard corner of the main cabin.

Available layouts include a three-stateroom version, where the owner’s stateroom occupies the port hull, or a charter-friendly four-stateroom layout, with athwartship bunks in the two forward staterooms.

As with its bigger sister, the Catspace has lounge areas on the foredeck and atop its flybridge. The helm station is up top too, to starboard, and is surrounded on the side and behind with cushions. Unlike the 4.6, the Catspace’s winches are close at hand when sitting at the wheel. A singlehander or skipper with a short-handed crew will appreciate this. I found access to the flybridge via stairs from either side deck to be quite good, with handholds located where I needed them.

Again, if I planned to buy and sail the Catspace, I’d include a code zero or some other all-round reaching sail to add a little more get-up-and-go. We went sailing in about 15 knots of wind and notched about 4 knots on the speedo closehauled. In a higher puff, I saw just under 6 knots reaching. But was it a comfortable ride? You bet.

As stated at the outset, sailboats are built to suit a purpose. During a Boat of the Year debrief this past fall, judge Tim Murphy told his colleagues that overall, he thought that the open-air concept incorporated into the design of the 4.6 and Catspace works quite well. Recalling a weeklong vacation spent with five friends aboard an earlier Bali model, he said, “On the charter, it was actually delightful.”

Bali 4.6 Review

We talk about the experience of the topRik team in researching the sailing catamaran Bali 4.6 from the famous manufacturer Catana Group, the parent company of Bali Catamarans shipyard.

The topRik expert review is accompanied by photos and schematics. As usual, we present video reviews and articles on Bali 4.6 by famous yachtsmen-journalists.

Bali 4.6 Review

Catana Group - recognized leader in the production of exclusive catamarans - at one time decided to develop the market for mass production of sailing boats. The Bali Catamarans shipyard and Olivier Poncin, who is also the creator of the Catana brand, were called upon to bring this idea to life.

So Bali is a relatively new name in European yacht building. The first hulls of this brand were presented to the maritime community in 2017, and to date, some of the first-born have already been discontinued. This suggests that the brand is developing and improving.

The most eloquent proof of this is the rapid growth in sales figures, which have already caught up with many large manufacturers in the market for mass sailing boats.

Olivier Poncin was able to create a relatively inexpensive multihull, which aroused the interest of both yachtsmen and charter companies. As a result, the first hundred buildings were sold in the first two years.

In the short period of time that has passed since the presentation of the first hull from Bali Catamarans Bali's main features were already established and recognized by the yachting community, which is a great achievement for any brand. This is evidence that the shipyard’s models have unique features that are characteristic only of these catamarans.

Such special features that shape the appearance of Bali cats include, first of all, a solid deck at the bow. The lack of meshes here made it necessary to significantly increase the height of the hulls so that water could freely pass between them without hitting this solid foredeck.

Bali 4.6 Review

The approach to the development of Bali models reflects the experience of naval architects and designers of Catana Group in the design of exclusive catamarans and superyachts. This solid bow deck saw the light of day thanks to the desire to expand the maximum comfort for life on board a cruising catamaran. Now here you can arrange a large relaxation area with a sunbathing area or place separate sun loungers and arrange a comfortable dining area.

The garage door that connects (or separates) the aft cockpit and saloon has forever become part of the DNA of the line, and has already received a name among yachtsmen and naval architects: the “Bali door”. This is the name given to the entire rear wall of the cabin, which can be raised and lowered entirely using pneumatics.

Bali 4.6 Review

And if, together with the Bali door, you close the sliding windows of the saloon and the door to the foredeck, the pilothouse will be completely protected from bad weather.

Door to the foredeck? Yes, since Bali 4.2 this feature has also become an inseparable feature of Bali's DNA. Bali's distinctive features include a door leading to the foredeck. A wonderful solution, because in discontinued models there was a windshield instead, which could be raised and lowered, but it was impossible to go through it directly from the saloon to the bow.

Bali 4.6 allows the interior to be fully opened in good weather to ensure maximum ventilation and a constant flow of fresh air. And if we are talking about a particularly hot climate, the yacht can be tightly sealed with the air conditioning turned on. You can do the same in colder conditions, only turn on the heating instead of the air conditioner.

To ensure the necessary rigidity of the yacht's structure, which could have suffered due to the replacement of the stationary wall of the deckhouse with a Bali door, an original engineering solution was created. In a complex matrix, the inner halves of the hulls with the bridge and rigid foredeck are laminated into a single unit using vacuum infusion technology. This process also uses separately molded or co-laminated local reinforcements, stiffeners and deck stringers.

Features of the brand include the separate production of false fins with their subsequent gluing to protect the integrity of the hulls in case of grounding. But hull false keels allow storing the kata on the shore while leaning on them.

The catamaran's forepeaks have sealed bulkheads, that is, they are designed as ram compartments.

Bali 4.6 Review

It remains to add that the creator of Bali 4.6 was inspired by his own creation - Bali 4.5, which is now out of production, although it has become a very successful and sought-after catamaran. But innovations in yacht production are developing and require new solutions.

Review of Bali 4.6 by topRik Team

topRik experts first saw Bali 4.6 at the boat show in Cannes. This was a huge event in the yachting community, which was waiting for the restrictions to finally be lifted due to the pandemic.

Bali 4.6 Review

Catana Group widely presented Bali Catamarans products at this exhibition, among which was Bali 4.6.

First Impression

Since we previously examined the Bali 4.4 and Bali 4.2 in detail, neither the high sides, nor the rigid bow deck, nor the ability to access the foredeck directly from the wheelhouse, nor this huge wheelhouse with a Bali garage door came as a surprise to us. The latter, of course, was impossible to see from the pier and at first glance, but we knew what we are dealing with.

Bali 4.6 Review

Compared to the dimensions of the Bali 4.6, its masts are also low, which means the sail area remains moderate.

From the berth you can appreciate the convenient location of the boom relative to the flybridge roof. But to make it easier for you to imagine how convenient it is to work with the boom of this catamaran, check out the photo below.

Bali 4.6 Review

The enlarged hulls promise excellent living conditions, but the number of cabins from the berth is difficult to guess. Probably 4, like analogues from other manufacturers. Surprise! The plate with a brief description of the technical characteristics assures that the maximum number of cabins is 5. Let's check. If so, then this is a great option for charter companies.

We wanted to check the quality of the view of all 4 corners of the boat from the captain’s bridge on the flybridge, as well as the organization of the below-deck space, which made it possible to place 5 cabins on the 46-footer.

And since we begin our study from the transom and aft cockpit, moving through the saloon-wheelhouse to the foredeck, here’s the layout of the main deck so you could follow. In addition, the schematic clearly shows the relationship of all parts of the main deck, as well as the placement of social and work areas:

Bali 4.6 Review

Transom and Aft Cockpit

Why did we combine the transom and aft cockpit in one section, although we usually go through them separately? Well, with this catamaran it is difficult to separate the components of the main deck from each other. This is not helped even by the two doors that provide pass-through passage from the transom to the chain locker in the bow. On the contrary, these doors rather contribute to the smooth flow of the cockpit into the saloon, and the saloon into the foredeck. It feels like you are inside a small cottage. So the transom is simply the entrance to this cozy and comfortable cottage on the water, a kind of porch, covered with teak if the owner wishes.

Bali 4.6 Review

It includes a 3-piece swim platform. The middle part is intended for an inflatable boat, and the two side “islands” are for organizing a beach spot at the sea. Therefore, the middle part can be provided with fastenings and/or sloop beams, and the “islands” can be provided with a folding ladder .

Bali 4.6 Review

If the transom is the porch of the cottage, then the cockpit is its veranda, which can be accessed via two ladders on both sides. The huge transom sofa, soft and comfortable, as well as the saloon roof that extends over the cockpit, promise a pleasant rest when you want to hide from the scorching rays of the sun on the “beach”. If you are disappointed by the minimalism of the cockpit furnishings - be patient, Bali knows how to surprise, as our experience of testing cats from this manufacturer shows.

Bali 4.6 Review

Well, at least you get this excellent grill with plancha, which is located on the starboard side. You don't have to run to the galley and back to the sofa to cook and enjoy eating something with a crispy crust in the fresh air.

Bali 4.6 Review

Excellent location - the smells of frying fish or meat will not permeate the upholstery. By the way, the quality of the textiles of this catamaran is much better than that of previous models; it probably contains more natural fibers. Although, as well as with teak, natural is always more difficult to maintain: synthetic textiles are easier to clean and cheaper to replace. It is for the future owner to choose.

Bali 4.6 Review

Looking at the photo above, you are probably wondering: where in the cockpit is this seat on which the girl sat so comfortably closer to the plancha? Well, it’s not in the cockpit, but in the saloon, and the girl is sitting at the window of the saloon. To understand this, let's go into the saloon.

Those who read the introduction to this review are not surprised, as they are aware of the main attraction of the Bali 4.6's saloon - the ability to transform into a windswept area thanks to the garage door and sliding windows. And just look at these windows!

Bali 4.6 Review

All passengers of the yacht along with the crew can sit in front and not just one girl who wants to enjoy grilled shrimp.

Before entering the saloon, we must lift the pneumatic garage door. Let's do it right now. Wow! Even though we expected something similar, since, as we already mentioned, we are familiar with the predecessors of Bali 4.6, this spaciousness stunned us.

Bali 4.6 Review

Is it also difficult for you to determine where the cockpit ends and the saloon begins when the Bali door is raised? And that place in front of the window was the edge of the starboard sofa.

By the way, in the latest models of Bali catamarans this large sofa can be replaced by two luxurious armchairs with a cigar cabinet.

Bali 4.6 Review

The dining area on the port side is not limited to a folding table, an L-shaped soft sofa and several armchairs. It continues further - behind a low partition there is a full-fledged galley, which is equipped like a home kitchen.

Bali 4.6 Review

And the table located opposite the sink by the window overlooking the foredeck can serve as a bar counter for serving food and drinks to those relaxing on the foredeck.

Bali 4.6 Review

On the other side of the galley we are pleased to see a chart table, which has become almost a rarity, since many modern yachts prefer to do without them. But our skipper believes that a real captain should be able to both use electronic gadgets and plot a course using paper charts .

Therefore, we are glad to see such a solid control post here - here you can, without being distracted from lunch, monitor the condition of the equipment on the yacht using the indicators displayed at this post in case the catamaran is moving on autopilot or the assistant is present at the helm on the flybridge. By the way, two people are quite enough to control this large and wide vessel, and we will tell you why later.

Bali 4.6 Review

It’s good that topRik is represented on this trip by a fairly large group. Therefore, here we can split up: part of the crew will go down to the bow cabin, and then explore other places where the owner and guests can sleep to their heart's content.

And the rest will go to the foredeck through the bow door. As you can see, we were able to walk the entire “cottage” called Bali 4.6 from the “porch” to the “backyard”.

Foredeck – The “Courtyard”

Here you have all the conditions for having a good time. A huge sunbathing area and a free-standing sun lounger promise a wonderful tan. And a table with an L-shaped bench is a great place for outdoor dining.

Bali 4.6 Review

Here you can organize a modest party without occupying the saloon and cockpit, maybe spilling into a flybridge area.

What's up with our experts, who are surveying the cabins? They haven't finished their inspection yet - so let’s go on the flybridge.

No matter how tired we are of repeating ourselves, we will have to do it: the flybridge is a huge space divided into a work area and a relaxation area. It seems like the word “huge” comes up too often in our review? This is Bali 4.6 for you!

Bali 4.6 Review

And what part of the cottage does the flybridge represent here? The answer suggests itself: this is a mezzanine.

A cheerful company can also gather here, which will not let the skipper and his assistant get bored. A comfortable sofa and table are provided for guests, and for the helmsman and assistant there is a helm station and a comfortable chair for two if they get tired of steering the catamaran and want to sit down.

Part of the flybridge area is given over to solar panels. They will gain enough energy so that when docked you do not constantly turn on the engines for domestic needs.

Inside the Cabins

We usually start our descriptions of catamaran living quarters with the master cabin. But this time we wanted to first of all show you a cabin with a bunk bed for two people. We saw quite a few such rooms, usually with low ceilings, where you had to almost crawl onto the beds. Bali 4.6 was a pleasant surprise: this cabin leaves enough space above the head of an adult, and children will have even more freedom here if the cat is intended for family cruises with teenagers.

Bali 4.6 Review

Why didn't we start with the master cabin? Because she is as luxurious and comfortable as any catamaran of her size. Unless, of course, it completely occupies one of the floats.

Bali 4.6 Review

And this is what the lower deck configuration looks like, for example, for a charter company, when the master cabin is divided into two cabins, one of which is designed for a king-size double bed and a bunk bed. The second float, just like in the version with the owner's cabin, is divided into two equal cabins. As you can see in the schematic below, each cabin has a bathroom equipped with a washbasin, shower, toilet and storage space.

Bali 4.6 Review

Please note that the forepeaks are also suitable for organizing a sleeping area, storage space, or an additional toilet room.

The catamaran we tested was equipped with 45 HP Yanmar inboard engines. By the way, the engine compartment is very convenient - you can move freely, nothing restricts movements during maintenance.

Bali 4.6 Review

The two of us can lift and manage almost 200 m² of sails (we have not abandoned the Code Zero with a furler) - it was very easy thanks to the electric winch and automatic jib. The convenient location of the boom made it easier to raise the sails.

At 10 knots (wind speed) the test catamaran reached a speed of 5 knots. Yes, Bali is not about speed, but about the pleasure of sailing, the obedience of the helm, the responsiveness of the cat and the wind in your hair. Even though Code Zero was not easy to use, the cat was easy and fun to control.

As for the view from the control post, the stern of the right hull is expectedly poorly visible, since the helm station is moved slightly to the left. The skipper will need help when mooring unless you equip your boat with cameras.

Bali 4.6 Review

Advantages of Bali 4.6

Here, almost everything is thought out to the smallest detail, from the exterior to the choice of cabin layout, with the ability to organize a comfortable “bedroom” for children.

The crew will enjoy ease of operation, and passengers will enjoy the comfort of life on board, including freedom of movement on the decks, the ability to cook really good meals and take some rest on the decks and in the cabins.

The safety and stability of the cat is ensured by a well-thought-out design, and for the safety of the movement of passengers and crew, metal handrails are provided along the sides and in the premises of the yacht.

Reviews of Bali 4.6 from Professionals

In both reviews from professionals Bali 4.6 is compared with other catamaran models. In one of them - with a boat of the same length, in the other - with a yacht from the same manufacturer, which was presented along with Bali 4.6.

Mark Pillsbury

Mark got on board Bali 4.6 and Bali Catspace and tested them both within Cruising World's Boat of the Year competition during sailing boats exhibition in USA, Annapolis, state Maryland in autumn of 2021.

The author immediately determined the purpose of these catamarans – made for a spoiled crew.

He turned to the history of the creation of the Bali brand and described the common features of this line, signs of which appear in both yachts tested. Moreover, the cost of one of them is twice as high as the other. In the following description the reason for this difference becomes clear.

Mark describes in detail the interior of catamarans, comparing them with each other, identifying advantages and disadvantages.

He explains how the tests were carried out at sea, how the yachts were equipped, and focused on how convenient it was to control both models.

Mark quotes a competition judge as saying that the open air concept of these catamarans works very well.

For details, please refer to the original text by following the link provided.

Navigare Yachting

A very interesting comparison is provided on the online page of Navigare Yachting - a premium yacht charter operator.

Bali 4.6 and Lagoon 46 were chosen - sailing catamarans with similar dimensions.

The comparison begins with technical characteristics, in which the palm passes from one brand to another depending on the subject: dimensions, draft, displacement, volumes of fresh water and fuel tanks, sail plan, etc.

The layout of the main deck of both boats, the flybridge and helm station, the interior and layout of the cabins (as well as all possible versions), and the exterior were carefully examined.

Find out what conclusions were drawn from this comparison (who won?) by going to the page at the link.

Video Reviews of Bali 4.6

With such catamarans the video reviews look more like real estate tours, and Bali 4.6 is no exception.

First, a quick teaser, giving you a glimpse at the yacht’s silhouette and main features:

No words, just high-quality footage – another tour from BoatTube:

There is only one category of sailors for whom the Bali 4.6 will not suit: lovers of high speeds and turns. This sailboat is for rest and relaxation in a comfortable environment of living on board and sailing.

That's why she will find owners among:

  • responsible heads of families who want their loved ones to go on a safe and comfortable vacation;
  • lovers of comfort even among the sea;
  • those who want to master sail control without extreme sports;
  • supporters of cruises in the company of close friends;
  • couples who want to go out to sea often;
  • families who want to make a yacht their main home.

It is precisely because Bali 4.6 is an ideal choice for such a large audience (and not all categories are listed) that it is so attractive to charter companies also.

Introducing Bali 4.2

  • Introducing Bali 4.2

Bali 4.2 follows the groundbreaking footsteps of her predecessors. The staple of Bali catamarans design is OPEN, uninterrupted space that allows seamless moving through the entire catamaran.

Innovation is key!

The rigid forward cockpit was unseen before Bali Catamarans decided to use every inch of the space. The interior and exterior become one, thanks to the large tilting garage door seamlessly bringing together cockpit and saloon.   Bali 4.2 is the first catamaran of her size that directly connects the saloon with the forward cockpit, where the entire crew can comfortably lounge and sunbathe! Another novelty is the shower area that is separate from the head to provide even more practicality. Even more sunbathing area can be found on an exceptionally comfortable fly-bridge as well as the helm station designed for single-handed or short-handed use.

The spacious saloon is Bali catamarans trademark, and Bali 4.2 is no exception , with enough seating area around the table with a bar. Design of this catamaran offers various layout options and a vast selection of upscale materials, so it is customizable to the last detail! In the heart of Bali catamarans, philosophy is comfort and space, also visible in the customizable en-suite cabins.

Bali 4.2 is the latest in the family of successful catamaran models, which brings sailing in open space to another level!

Bali 5.4 (2022) 'Atlas'

Bali 5.4 Atlas

The Bali 5.4 is a “Multihull of the Year” award-winning catamaran. The design was new to the market in 2019 and provided a fresh approach to sailing. It is revolutionary in how space is accessed, with deliberate attention to flow and open space and it succeeds in producing a scale that feels less like a boat, and more like an upscale floating condominium.

Bali catamarans are known and appreciated for their unparalleled success in blending luxury, space, and performance; producing a sailing experience that is unparalleled. This new design further capitalizes on that reputation with the advent of the “Bali garage door” which is the centrepiece of the yacht. It allows for the aft wall of the yacht to simply disappear, opening up the back of the yacht to an unobstructed view of paradise. This also affords indoor/outdoor dining options and gives the ever-present Caribbean breeze ample opportunity to make its way through the yacht with ease.

With her solid foredeck gone are the forward trampolines, replaced by a large relaxing lounge area complete with cushions for sunbathing. A full-sized door provides access directly from the lounge area into the salon, allowing free movement through the yacht. A walk up to the flybridge unveils a seating area perfect for cocktails and taking in sunsets. There is also another area for sunbathing on the flybridge where you can take in the sights of the islands from the highest vantage point on the yacht.

The Bali open space design is further complimented by the superior outfit and aftermarket items available on Atlas. No detail has been left unnoticed from the fine linens, pillows and throws to the wine glasses, serving and flatware that make every day feel luxurious. She has been stocked full with every appliance and kitchen accessory to allow the chef to fully showcase the mastery of their art.

The water toys abound, allowing guests to fully experience all the Caribbean has to offer, both in and out of the water.

Atlas will accommodate 8 charter guests in 3 spacious queen cabins and 1 sprawling master cabin for those who desire more space. She is a brand new 2023 sailing catamaran with solar panels, air conditioning, water maker, ice maker, full-sized refrigerator, a fully customizable menu, Caribbean-made eco-friendly and reef-safe toiletries, a bar stocked to guest preference, coffee/espresso machine, rendezvous scuba diving, snorkelling gear, 4 underwater scooters, sub wing, wakeboard, 2 stand-up paddle boards, 10 ft. floating dock, towable tube, pool noodles, fishing gear, board and card games, television in the salon, Fusion 3 Bluetooth-enabled sound system and Atlas giveaways.

Have we forgotten something? Then give our Crewed Yacht Manager, Kayleigh a call. Born in the BVI to British parents who both worked in the BVI marine industry, Kayleigh’s background in the catering and marine industries means you are in exceptionally knowledgeable and experienced hands!

As a young man in his early 20’s he participated in “ Nippers” which is a lifesaving program at the beaches. It teaches young adults life-saving skills. It is safe to say that guests are safe with Brynn as their captain as he has been trained in saving lives in ocean-type and other situations.

Brynn is what they call a water baby as he has always had a love of surfing, lifesaving, and water skiing on his boat back home.

He has plenty of cocktail experience as he once worked in some of Cape Town’s most popular cocktail bars. He feels it goes hand in hand with his current position as a captain aboard charter yachts and cannot wait to shake up your favourite cocktail!

Bali Catamarans launches its new flagship, the Bali 5.8

Bali Catamarans launches its new flagship, the Bali 5.8

Sailing boat

Catana Group launches its 14th Bali Catamarans model, the Bali 5.8, for the brand’s 10th anniversary!

Always bigger, always more powerful, always more… Bali!

This time, the new BALI 5.8 is completing the range from the top down. The 38-foot Bali Catsmart was launched in April 2023 at last year’s International Multihull Show at La Grande Motte, and the R&D teams, accompanied by the Piaton- Bercault design studio, wasted no time, since just a few months later, the Bali Catamarans range has been extended with a flagship even bigger than the previous model.

At 18 metres in length and over 9 metres in beam, the brand’s DNA is clear to see on every level, or should we say every deck!

Bali Catamarans knows how to be gigantic in all the models in its range, by opening up the boats and offering nearly 20% more space than traditional catamarans of the same size. So when it comes to 18metres, the art of Bali Catamarans clearly shines through!

More than spacious cabins

The owner’s master suite is worthy of a palace, offering storage and living space to meet the expectations of this clientele sector, who are very demanding in terms of volume, space, light and sea views. The bathroom has been completely redesigned and is very spacious, with a XXXL shower to match the size of the boat.

The other cabins are not to be outdone, with Islands Beds in each, allowing easy access to either side of the bed.

The BALI 5.8 also offers TWIN cabins, with separate berths in the centre of the boat, for welcoming friends, but without risk of entanglement.

Finally, note that all the bathrooms, even aboard the 6-cabin version, have separate showers and toilets, for great comfort in all circumstances: family stays or cabin-charter cruising.

The saloon cockpit, the DNA of Bali Catamarans par excellence

The saloon-cockpit is the DNA of the brand, thanks to the tilting far door. It offers a unique, vast living space, where the layout and design are fully expressed.

The galley is also XXL in size, with high-level cupboards, a wider countertop and is U-shaped and can accommodate several when under way, even when it’s rough.

The dining area has been designed to incorporate a lounger and a table that will seat 12. As much a living area as a place to rest, it’s a key feature of the boat.

A relaxing bench seat or 2 lounge chairs: the choice is yours! Both are possible. With an integrated bar, and depending on how it’s used, it’s more than a lounge, it’s a relaxation area!

The deep, wide outside bench seat facing the saloon means you can stretch out, sit up, sleep or chat, all while remaining connected to both the saloon and the sea.

Finally, the large forward door and large opening window allow you to enjoy all the interiors, sheltered from UV rays and the sun, while guaranteeing a tunnel of ventilation throughout the boat, which only the Bali concept can offer.

The chart table is set apart and well isolated from the rest of the spaces andis forward-facing. Its position ensures proximity to the rest of life on board, while guaranteeing optimum safety for navigation without being disturbed by the other activities on board.

To ensure that sailing is as pleasant as possible, particular attention has been paid to accommodating the crew, who are crucial to the smooth running of the boat. A large double Captain’s cabin is available for the master version, so that both owners and crew can enjoy their own privileged area.

The forward cockpit: a terrace overlooking the sea.

By connecting the galley directly to the inside of the boat, the wide forward door allows both guests and the wind to circulate freely.

The foredeck features a sunbathing, dining and lounge area that no other traditional catamaran can offer. It’s a unique feature!

The fact that the boat is fully decked from bow to stern makes it even stiffer under sail and creates better sailing performance because the platform is rigid. For weight reasons, Bali has also replaced the bulkhead reinforcements with carbon, a feature handed down from Catana, thus avoiding the need to add layers and layers of classic glass cloth. All this contributes to the silence that reigns on the boat: not a squeak, not a creak! Only the sound of the sea!

The flybridge becomes The Rooftop!

It’s what everyone dreams of: a Rooftop! Bali has been designing it since the very beginning and on all models (except the 38). It’s an essential place for watching, relaxing, sailing, partying and chatting.

Both a lounge and a sunbathing area, the flybridge is optimised and modular, adapting to the time of day and the cruising style.

The sail handling and helming areas are clearly identified, for the safety of passengers and the peace of mind of the crew. The 2/3 - 1/3 helm seat is modular. A hardtop (or bimini) covers the entire flybridge, providing UV and heat protection, permanent ventilation and an unbeatable view!

The solar panels are fully integrated for total self-sufficiency.

Feet in the water at the stern of the boat

Here, Bali has optimised access to the sea via the aft steps, offering wider, more spacious bathing areas.

A relaxing chair is installed right here, facing aft: an incredible spot!

The optional hydraulic platform allows you to bask in just a few centimetres of water but is still capable of lifting a substantial sized tender.

Sailing first!

Because sailing is the very DNA of a hybrid, Bali has designed the Bali 5.8 to perform extremely well.

All the sail areas have been optimised, offering up to 240m² of upwind canvas.

Bali’s classic chines reduce the wetted area, while guaranteeing an extremely comfortable volume in the hulls above floor level.

The self-tacking jib is easy to handle and guarantees upwind performance in strong winds and the sail wardrobe can easily be complemented by a very large CODE 0, which can be handled from the cockpit.

This model is manufactured in our factory in Canet en Roussillon in the South of France, and will be on show to the public this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival.

  • Good motoring performance

The Bali catamaran range caused a bit of a stir when it was launched onto the market five years ago, with French manufacturer Catana turning its attention from performance cats to taking on the cruising market – in the process introducing some innovative and controversial design ideas. And now the first Bali cat has arrived here – the 12.1m Bali 4.1 – the baby of the range and a development of the original Bali 4.0 model. The New Zealand agent for the Bali range is Dream Yacht Charter in Queensland, Australia, run by Frenchman Christophe Vanek, a former international yachtie who first came to Australia in 1986 with one of the French challengers for the Louis Vuitton Cup. I meet Christophe and his wife Amara at Auckland’s Viaduct Harbour, where boats are being released following the On Water Boat Show. Dream Yacht Charter operates a fleet of these cats in the Whitsundays, but the boat we’re on today is privately-owned and lives at Pine Harbour Marina, east of Auckland, where we are to deliver her today.

Interior It’s very light and bright with pale upholstery, white benchtops and timber-look flooring, tabletops and door fronts, offset with bright stainless fiddles. The view is pretty much 360 degrees, through large windows on each side. There’s a large L-shaped seating area around the table to port, with a settee to starboard. The domestic-sized fridge-freezer is powered through an inverter, the batteries topped up by solar panels.

Lagoon vs Bali catamarans

Heard of both brands, but wish you knew more about them? With Lagoon and Bali present on the market as two of the most renowned catamaran brands, we invite you to read the comparative review of Lagoon and Bali catamarans below.

Bali catamarans: Overview

When we say Bali, we do not mean the beautiful island everyone knows about in Indonesia. Even the pronunciation is different. Put an accent on the ‘i’ and make it longer. When you read it out loud, you will hear that you are not talking about the island. Now that we got this cleared up, let’s get down to business.

Bali Catamarans are a part of the Catana Group and have been on the market for less than 10 years. In 2014 the first models of cruising catamarans were presented and have been accepted exceptionally well in a short period of time.

One of the first things you will notice when seeing a Bali catamaran is its elegant, beautiful and sleek design . Bali catamarans are one of the most beautifully designed catamarans, with innovative design solutions. Bali catamarans have sharper edges compared to Lagoon catamarans. They really do leave you breathless.

Another thing is the solid foredeck . There is no trampoline which you might see on other catamarans. A solid foredeck provides more space for entertainment on cushions and large sunbeds. Many experienced sailors say that the solid construction makes the Bali catamarans stronger compared to others without the solid foredeck, even though it does not significantly add to the overall weight.

Loving the outdoor/indoor feel ? Bali catamarans offer you exactly this! One of its main features which separate them from others is the main deck saloon. For example, on the Bali 4.3 you can easily open up your closed saloon with the garage door (tilting swing door). If there is too much wind or bad weather is just around the corner, easily close the saloon to create a closed indoor lounge in just a few seconds.

If you do not like the ‘feels like a hotel’ boat and the open space main deck, then Bali catamarans might not be the boats for you. There is hardly any outdoor ‘privacy’ as everything is really well connected and open and everyone is constantly together unless you pick some of the bigger models like the Bali 4.8 or Bali 5.4 .

If you have kids and want to give them additional entertainment such as a trampoline, the trampoline foredeck is missing on a Bali catamaran. You will never find the nets on any Bali catamaran model so this might make your choice easier.

Going into more technical details and compared to other catamarans, the booms are slightly higher which can occasionally cause problems to skippers if the mainsail needs to be manually handled. Cabins are not so high compared to Lagoon models so, for taller guests, this could be a slight issue.

Luxury Bali Catamaran models

Bali has several models ranging from 11.8m such as the Bali 4.0 , all the way to Bali 5.4 which is 16.2m long. The larger charter models are growing into true luxury catamarans. Even with the tiniest details, Bali catamarans are doing their best to bring the luxury feel even closer to you.

If you have decided that it is finally time to experience something ‘wow’, Yacht4Less recommends the luxury models such as the Bali 5.4. Bali 5.4 is available with 4, 5 or 6 cabins for up to 10-14 people. Find the perfect 5 cabin Bali 5.4 in Croatia .

Bali 5.4 not only offers you a stunningly comfortable catamaran with a lot of space for relaxation, an enormous flybridge large enough for a home-made cinema area, and a newly designed forward cockpit entertainment area which can be accessed from the galley directly, but you can also access the aft cabins directly from the aft deck. If you are an early bird, this is the perfect boat as you will not wake up others on board.

Lagoon Catamarans: Overview

When someone says the word catamaran, people will first think of a Lagoon, no doubt about it. Lagoon is the most known catamaran brand as they are the world leader in producing cruising catamarans. Being a part of the Beneteau Group, they have evolved and worked on making top-of-the-line catamarans for charters since 1984, which is almost 40 years now.

The interior and cabins are very spacious and high, which is very convenient for taller guests. Cabins have plenty of storage for everyone’s belongings so don’t worry about bringing too many summer dresses. You can enjoy the panoramic views from the galley and indoor seating area. The windows stretch from one side to the other, giving full 360’ views when indoors.

Exterior : the famous trampoline! The best way to recognize a Lagoon is by two trampoline nets up front. You can suntan, chill and read while enjoying the sound and breeze of the sea below you. There is no better feeling! On top of that, there is plenty of outside space for entertaining. Even if you do not want to dine all together every time, kids can be at one table, adults at another. The feel of the terrace-on-water is unique to the Lagoon as everything is very open.

Something to keep in mind is that Lagoons have been around for a very long time so they have also been tested and reviewed by many sailors, making the Lagoon catamarans a ‘safe’ choice compared to others.

Even though the Lagoon catamarans are very spacious and big, when compared to other catamaran brands, they are the bulkiest of all. This, of course, will not affect your holiday in any way, however, they are not the most luxurious-looking models out there - alghough, this is subjective -. As the Lagoons are very heavy, they are also not the best in performance if you're looking for an active sailing trip.

In comparison to other catamaran models, Lagoons usually have smaller water tanks. We advise that you check the size of water tanks and ask your Yacht4Less charter consultant to source one equipped with a watermaker if you are sailing with a lot of people, especially when chartering in the Caribbean or Exotics where there are fewer available stops to re-fill.

As Lagoon is a well-astonished brand, the prices of Lagoon catamarans might be higher in comparison to other brands with the same features and cabin numbers. Don't forget to check in with your Yacht4Less yacht charter consultant for the market's best rates on the dates and boat you pref er.

Luxury Lagoon Catamaran models

Expanding its portfolio of catamaran models, Lagoon has introduced several luxurious models in the past years. The Seventy7 and Sixty5 catamarans are some of the most luxurious sailing yachts. Due to their size, these catamarans are usually only offered on a crewed basis. If these are slightly out of your budget, Yacht4Less recommends the Lagoon 52F and the brand new Lagoon 51.

The Lagoon 52F is one of the most accepted models yet as it is the result of customer feedback and suggestions which have been collected over the years. There is no other catamaran which has applied so much constructive feedback. Architects remained true to the Lagoon key features while making every other change for the better!

Due to this and the upgrade in materials and style, the Lagoon 52F is a model you should not ignore. The Lagoon 52 review has already been published in detail . The difference now is that the flybridge has been added. Not only can the helm be reached from two sides (from the cockpit and the starboard side), the flybridge adds another wonderful entertaining area.

If you are one of those people who always look at the new models of things in life, the Lagoon 51 should be on your radar. This new model became available in the summer of 2022, so you might be one of the first to experience it.

Its best and hottest feature is the large flybridge where the skipper and the guests can be together at all times. The flybridge has 2 large sun pads and a C-shaped seating area with the helm station in the centre. Even the central table can be lowered into a huge sunbathing area. Isn’t that cool for a flybridge?

The indoor saloon has been lifted, making the panoramic views even better. The transoms are extended making it easy to get on board from the dock, and also giving you an additional platform to stay closer to the water when anchored.

Final thoughts: Which is better?

bali catamaran garage door

It might sound crazy but if one of the most important things to you about a catamaran is the trampoline up front, then Lagoon is the answer. Kids love this feature. It offers a truly unique experience while sailing and anchored.

Both brands are great for a relaxing holiday and have won many awards, so whichever you choose, you will not have any regrets. We could not tell you which is better as there honestly is no correct answer.

FAQ section

Are bali or lagoon catamarans good quality.

Yes. Both brands are well known and have won many awards for their performances and quality. They use the most advanced materials and technology, listen to customer feedback and the shipyards constantly improve their catamarans with each new model.

Where are Bali or Lagoon catamarans made?

Bali catamarans and Lagoon catamarans are both manufactured in France. Bali’s shipyard is at the Catana Yard on the South coast, just next to Perpignan. Lagoon catamarans are built on the West coast of France, in Bordeaux.

Does Bali or Lagoon make a power catamaran?

Bali and Lagoon both make power catamarans. Lagoon has the newest Sixty7 and Seventy7 power catamarans to show. There are also other models such as the Lagoon Power 43, Lagoon Power 44, and Lagoon Power 40. Bali’s power catamarans are the Bali 4.3 MY and the Bali Catspace MY.

Top 4 Builder With Olivier Poncin at the helm, the Catana Group has become one of the top four catamaran builders in the world, and they are intent on offering a model range that matches every size of the main competition (Lagoon, Fountaine Pajot, Leopard). Take a look at our Catana 471 review : that model was the among the first models this company sold with Poncin in charge. The company has certainly changed direction!

The Bali 4.8 Open Space fills the gap between the 4.6 and the 5.4 with all of those innovative Bali features from previous designs, plus some new ones too. These catamarans are built close to where the Windelo 50 is made- but they couldn’t be more different.

  • Up to 5 configurations to choose from, going up to 6 cabins each with their own heads.
  • Huge living space on the main deck with the garage door and access to the foredeck lounge.
  • Very light and spacious with the big fridge.
  • Direct access to the transom from the aft cabins. Big cabins forward.
  • Great visibility from the flybridge helm with even more living space up here.
  • The height of the boom – it won’t be easy to reach the mainsail if there is a problem.
  • You are pretty isolated up on the flybridge, especially coming into the marina.
  • The winches seem low, you might be winding on your knees.
  • High centre of effort on the mainsail.
  • The solid foredeck would worry me in a big sea.

So like her siblings, the 4.8 comes with the solid foredeck, a fully open interior, the garage door that turns the whole main deck area into one outside or one inside space depending on the weather, and the big American fridge/freezer. And with all of that Catana experience, they have once again produced a boat that sails and is comfortable at sea.

A Tough Boat The boat is constructed with a closed-cell PVC foam sandwich (there is no balsa here unlike the competition), and the bulkheads are laminated rather than glued which all adds up to a strong, stiff, hard wearing boat. The company now has yards in Canet-en-Roussillon, La Rochelle and Tunisia.

Living Area

Let’s cover this off first shall we, as that is the real Wow Factor on Bali Catamarans. All of that space! The finish isn’t up to the standard of, say, a Privilege Catamaran but, to be fair, we are not talking the same price point.

When you put in your Bali 4.8 order, you will have some planning to do because this catamaran offers five versions. There is a 3-cabin version with a very large owner’s hull with separate bathroom and work/office space area. The big news on the Bali 4.8 is the direct access to the starboard transom.

Room for a Football Team And of course, with Balis being so popular in the charter market, there are options for 4 , 5 and even 6-cabin versions (the latter with 6 en-suite heads) which is pretty unique in its class.

But where the 4.8 really comes into her own, is in offering for the first time on a multihull under 15 meters (50’) in length, 6 double cabins and 6 en-suite bathrooms. The charter companies make up two thirds of the sales of these boats. I am sure they will be “doing the math” on that one.

The open saloon, galley and cockpit area combine to make one huge light living area (we are in New York apartment territory here). The tall fridge freezer unit is placed in prime position between the saloon and the galley.

There is plenty of storage and worktop area, with clever design touches for waste storage, cooking, lounging and navigation.

Innovative Design The 4.8 follows her larger sister with the forward door to the foredeck, increasing the living space at anchor and calm conditions even further. The deck is really a 15 m² lounge with a couple of L-shaped benches and a table, plus a forward sun lounging area.

This rigid foredeck versus trampoline debate rages on, but Bali have a lot of arguments in their favour. The structure increases rigity of course, and in rough conditions, with the high bridgedeck and sculpted profile, the foredeck adds extra bouyancy to reduce pitching and push the bow through the chop.

And the communal living areas don’t stop there, as up top there is an extensive flybridge with another L-Shaped sofa behind the helm under the bimini, another table for al fresco dining and a sun lounge area.

Down below, the living space Wow Factor continues with direct access to the cockpit from the aft cabins. Up front, the two double cabins in either hull have double beds set athwartships with great views of the sea through the portholes. The forepeaks house bathrooms with separate showers.

Head to the Heads You can then order up to four other head compartments with integrated showers. There are two cabins in the centre of the hulls in the full charter version with two single bunk berths each, a configuration that is sure to be popular with families.

The two cabins aft have direct access to the cockpit, another innovation from the French builder.

Sailing & Handling

The helm station is up on the flybridge, which gives you great visibility on this boat, but the flipside is that you are a long way from the lines when you come into the marina. You are going to need some competent crew on this boat.

All the lines for sail handling are easy to reach though, as you are pretty close to the mast foot, but that boom is high. The winches seem low to me.

The high boom is the big draw back with the flybridge configuration. It means that the centre of effort on the mainsail is higher than the competition and it is not easy to access the mainsail if something goes wrong.

Save Budget for the Code 0 and Gennaker With the self tacking jib up (47 m² / 505 sq ft), she will comfortably hit 50% of true wind speed in light to moderate winds. Keep some budget back for a Code 0 (90 m² / 970 sq ft), and you will slice through the water faster in calmer conditions. In moderate conditions on a  beam reach, you should comfortably hit 8 to 10 knots and perhaps over- this boat is no slow coach for a cruising catamaran.

The hulls are nicely sculpted and you should quickly hit 8 knots of cruising speed under power, especially if you have ordered the twin 57HP engines. The standard spec is 45HP. Put this upgrade at the top of your options list.

The great thing about Bali is how they have raised the bar in cruising catamaran design with their innovative design touches. This catamaran is all about maximising comfort and space, and with 5 options to choose from, they are going to appeal to a very wide market with this boat.

The charter companies will love it as the configuration maxes out at 6 cabins. This is stiff competition for the Leopard 50 and the Lagoon 50.
