10 Cheap, Affordable Boats for 2024

Table of Contents

Last Updated on May 22, 2024 by Boatsetter Team

Say ‘cheap boats’ and many people get the wrong impression, because they often think that ‘cheap’ equates to poor quality. That’s too bad because in reality, the most affordable boats on the water today are usually quite well built.

Modern standards are high and although these boats may be very simple and utilitarian, their owners tend to love them. Plus, simple, inexpensive boats are easy to maintain, easy to operate, and have very low operational expenses . On top of all that you can defray what expenses there are—and potentially even make a profit—by allowing other people to rent your boat . But, what constitutes a cheap boat in the first place?

While $10,000 isn’t exactly chump change it’s a tiny sum in the world of boat-buying. So for the purposes of this post, we’ll use that as our price ceiling and stick with looking at boats under 10K ( listed alphabetically from A to Z ).

Already Own a Boat? Earn an Average of $20K by Renting it Out on Boatsetter

1. Bass Pro Shops Pond Prowler 8

Bass Pro Shops Pond Prowler 8

With a list cost of $619.99 this is just about the cheapest boat you’re likely to run across. True, you’ll want to spend $300 or so to get an electric trolling motor and a battery, but for anglers who fish alone on small bodies of water the Bass Pro Shops Pond Prowler 8 will get the job done.

It has a swivel seat, recessed beverage and tackle holders, bow and stern motor mounts, and is pre-wired for electric motors. The polyethylene hull and deck material is virtually indestructible, and with a footprint just eight feet long and four feet wide, you can slide this 100-pound fishing machine right into the back of a pickup truck.

  • MSRP: $629.99

Visit Bass Pro Shops to learn more.

2. Gheenoe 16 Super

Gheenoe 16 Super

The Gheenoe 16 Super is sort of like a boat crossed with a canoe, with a canoe-like entry that widens aft to a 4’7” beam . That gives it plenty of room for a pair of people, and since these boats are most commonly used for fishing, the 16 Super comes with swiveling pedestal seats, rod holders, and an aerated livewell.

MSRP is $6,100 and a trailer adds another $2,525 so there’s some cash left in the budget for an outboard, and the 16 Super can take up to 40 HP. Note that this is also one of the few boats in this roundup which can also be rigged with a console (an additional $625) and can be steered with a wheel as opposed to a tiller arm.

  • MSRP:  $6,100 (without a motor or trailer)

Visit Gheenoe Boats to learn more.

3. Hobie Mirage Compass Duo

Hobie Mirage Compass Duo

The Hobie Mirage Compass Duo may be svelte with a beam of just under three feet, but its 13’6” length is capable of handling bigger waters than one might imagine. It’s propelled by human power via Hobie’s Mirage Drive pedal-and-fins system and with two people pedaling, can move along at jogging speeds. Plus, since you don’t need to buy a motor this tandem kayak’s list cost of $3,999 is all you’ll need to spend.

The Mirage Compass Duo also comes with four tracks installed so you can add items like fishing rod holders or cupholders to customize the boat as you please.

  • MSRP: $3,999

Visit Hobie to learn more.

4. Lowe 1032 Jon

Lowe 1032 Jon

The Lowe 1032 Jon is one of the most affordable aluminum boats you’ll ever find. True, it’s very small with a length of just 10’3” and a beam of four feet. Capacity is limited to 180 pounds, and maximum power is a mere 3.5 HP. But price is off-the-charts affordable with an MSRP of $1,089.

Spend a few hundred dollars for an electric motor or closer to $1,000 for a miniature gas motor, and you can afford to buy an entire fleet without breaking our price ceiling. Wait a sec—what about a trailer? Why bother with one? At 80 pounds it’s easy enough to shove the 1032 into the back of a pick-up, or even on top of a car’s roof rack.

  • MSRP: $1,089

Visit Lowe Boats to learn more.

5. Lund 1648 Jon Boat

Lund 1648 Jon Boat

Boatbuilder Lund is known for making aluminum boats of all shapes and sizes, and while they have smaller, even more affordable boats, their 1648 Jon goes for a hair over $4,000 and has a lot of capabilities for the price. Add in a trailer and a 20 horse outboard, and you’ll still be well under the 10K mark while enjoying a roomy 15’9” Jon boat with two bench seats and enough power to cruise at over 20 MPH even with a couple of people aboard.

This boat has a flat bottom design so it’s stable (though it could be a bit bumpy in open waters when the waves kick up), and its light 275-pound weight means that you could also power it with an electric motor for use on small bodies of water.

  • MSRP: $4,076

Visit Lund Boats to learn more.

6. Sea Eagle 14 SR

sea eagle 14 sr

Sea Eagle builds inflatable kayaks, fishing boats, and tenders, and their 14 SR can be had on the cheap. Plus, no trailer is necessary because when your day of boating is done you can simply deflate the boat, roll it up, and stuff it in the trunk of your car. Features include five air chambers, an aluminum bench seat, oars, a carry bag, a patch kit, and a foot pump. The 14 SR has an unusual perk, too, in that it has a patented inflatable drop-stitch keel that assists in tracking and handling. Sea Eagle sells their boats in different packages so in this case you could go stripped and pay the bare minimum, or choose a complete package (which includes a 9.9 HP Honda outboard and additional seating) for $5,999 and still go home with money in your pocket.

  • MSRP: $3,149

Visit Sea Eagle to learn more.

7. Sea-Doo Spark

seadoo spark

Personal watercrafts count as boats, too, and the Sea-Doo Spark is an eminently affordable PWC . Starting at a $6,999 MSRP, the Spark was improved for the 2024 model year with a new look and styling, an 4.5-inch LCD gauge display, and padded reboarding points to make climbing on more comfortable. The base version blasts across the water’s surface with up to two people aboard thanks to a 60 HP Rotax 900 ACE engine. The Spark’s Polytec hull is rugged and light and has an integrated 0.71-gallon glove box.

Pony up another $1,300 and you can get the “3 Up” version, which has seating for three people and boasts a larger 900 HP Rotax engine. Both models also have a tow hook so you can pull the kids around the lake on tow-toys.

  • MSRP: $6,999

Visit Sea-Doo to learn more.

8. Princecraft Starfish 156 WT

While the Princecraft Starfish 156 WT is a simple, straightforward, modified-V aluminum boat, it also is a cut above the norm for boats of this nature. It has unusual seating with two benches aft, a split center bench, and one bench seat in the bow, plus an integrated stowage compartment, a deployable reboarding ladder, and a fish ruler. It’s also built from 5052 H36 marine grade aluminum that’s .072” thick in the bottom, .061” thick in the sides, and features double plating at the chines. True, you’ll need to spend a couple thousand more to power the boat, but 15 horses will be plenty of juice so you can put together the package and still come in under the $10,000 budget ceiling.

  • MSRP: est. $6,672

Visit Starcraft Marine to learn more.

9. Sun Dolphin Pro 120

Sun Dolphin Pro 120

Boats made of rotomolded polyethylene have an advantage over aluminum or fiberglass in that they’re nearly indestructible and essentially maintenance-free. One such utility craft that can take heavy-duty abuse, be put away wet, and will still look and work great is the Sun Dolphin American 12 Jon. This 110-pound, 12’ long poly Jon boat comes with a limited lifetime warranty and has several molded-in features like bench seats, drink holders, oarlock sockets, and fishing rod holders. You can power it with an electric motor and a battery or drop on a gasoline outboard up to six HP then add in a trailer, and the entire package shouldn’t get much north of $5,000.

  • MSRP: est. $699

Visit Sun Dolphin to learn more.

10. Tracker Grizzly 1648 Jon

Tracker Grizzly 1754 Jon

The all-welded Tracker Grizzly 1648 Jon costs just a hair under $7,000 with a trailer and you can complete the package by adding a 15-hp outboard (which generally costs under $3,000). While the boat won’t exactly be a speed demon you’ll be able to get on plane with a couple of people aboard and head for the fishing grounds.

This model has a lockable bowdeck compartment, 0.10” thick aluminum plating in the hull and a 0.190” thick aluminum deck, a seven-degree modified-V hull, and the interior is coated in textured Sure Tread nonskid liner. This is one of the few options within our price range to include a lockable stowage compartment, and the 1648 Jon also has fore and aft pedestal seat bases.

  • MSRP: $4,995

Visit Tracker Boats to learn more.

No matter what your financial status may be, there’s a very good chance that you’ll find one or more of these cheap boats affordable. And don’t forget, if the finances are tight or you just feel like making an extra buck or two you can always rent your boat to help cover the cost of buying it.

10 New Cruising Sailboats Under 35 Feet

  • By Cruising World Staff
  • Updated: November 3, 2020

It wasn’t so long ago that 30- to 35-foot cruising sailboats were likely to be the largest yachts found in many a harbor. And while 40-something and even 50-something footers are all the rage at boat shows today, there’s a lot to be said for setting sail on a boat big enough to carry family and friends, but still small enough to be easily maintained and handled alone from time to time. Small cruising sailboats are simple to dock or tie up to a mooring, and finding long-term marina space is easier as well.

Choosing a cruising sailboat, no matter the size, is a big decision. And it helps to have a trusted list of boats to get started. Here, then, is a look at 10 of the best daysailers , weekenders and coastal cruising sailboats under 35 feet that are all in production and can be purchased new.

Alerion Sport 30

cheap sailing yacht brands

A quarter-century ago, Garry Hoyt launched what would come to be known as the daysailer genre with the introduction of the Alerion Express 28, a boat designed by the late Carl Schumacher that featured a minimal interior and a large cockpit where an owner and guests could enjoy the simple joy of sailing. Traditional and lovely looking—but with a quite modern underbody and a powerful sail plan—Hoyt, ever the marketer, proclaimed the boat to be “the prettiest girl at the dance.”

Since then, a number of siblings ranging from 20 to 41 feet have been added to the Alerion family, including the Alerion Sport 30, which retains the graceful sheer line, oval ports and stylish overhangs of the original Schumacher design. Yet with input from naval architect Langan Design Partners, it also embraces a solid measure of performance-oriented DNA.

Bavaria Cruiser 34

cheap sailing yacht brands

In every Boat of the Year contest, it seems, a boat rises up after sea trials to make a lasting impression on the judges. For 2018, that boat was the Bavaria Cruiser 34.

Says Boat of the Year Judge Tim Murphy, “The Bavaria was a lovely boat to sail. It has a single rudder, and she answered her helm just beautifully in the conditions we had today. We started off with around 10 knots of breeze that built to 13 to 15 knots. As a sailboat, it was just a pleasurable sailing experience, among the best we had during our judging. It was among the boats that felt like a really happy sailing experience.

Beneteau Oceanis 30.1

Beneteau Oceanis 30.1

Sailed as part of the 2020 Boat of the Year sea trials, the 31-foot-3-inch Beneteau Oceanis 30.1 was the compact yacht best-equipped and spec’d out as a dedicated cruising boat, and not coincidentally, it was also awarded the title of Best Performance Cruiser for 2020. But don’t let her cozy interior accommodations fool you; this is also one peppy little vessel.

Dehler 34

The 2017 Boat of the Year (BOTY) contest featured a stellar crop of crossover cruiser/racers; however, when all the testing was said and done, our independent panel of judges was sold on the Dehler 34, naming it the year’s Best Performance Cruiser. Designed by the highly regarded Judel/Vrolijk naval-architecture consortium, whose reputation was fostered by longtime success in international yacht-racing circles, the 34-footer combined contemporary good looks and a sweet turn of speed with better-than-average comfort and accommodations below. It didn’t hurt that the boat, nicely equipped at $215,000, was the least-expensive entry in the entire 2017 fleet. All in all, it proved to be a winning formula.

Dufour Grand Large 360

cheap sailing yacht brands

Dufour Yachts introduced its new 360 Grand Large model to CW’s Boat of the Year team in 2018 as a coastal cruiser intended for a couple or perhaps a small family. With that in mind, judge Alvah Simon found numerous clever elements to praise within the boat’s 35-foot-2-inch hull—a relatively modest LOA compared to the many 40-, 50- and 60-footers on display at the U.S. Sailboat show in Annapolis, Maryland.

After a roughly 10-year hiatus from the U.S. marketplace, the Slovenian builder Elan is back in a big way. For the 2017 Boat of the Year contest, the company launched a pair of new boats in the States, including the Elan E4, a 34-foot-9-inch performance cruiser with an emphasis on performing, designed by renowned British naval architect Rob Humphreys. The brand has been in business for seven decades and lately is perhaps even better known in America for its skis. Not surprisingly, given its complementary product lines—lots of sailors are fine skiers—its boats are as sleek and sporty as its boards.

Grand Soleil 34

Grand Soleil 34

Way back in the 1970s, when the well-known Italian boatyard Grand Soleil was just getting started, its first model was a Finot-designed 34-footer. With over 300 units sold, it was an instant success, and launched the company on an upward trajectory that spanned the intervening decades, mostly with an ongoing series of much larger, more complex racer/cruisers. For 2020, the builder decided to return to its roots with a completely revamped Grand Soleil 34, and it’s a terrific boat.

Value. How does one determine it? Price is most certainly a factor. In the case of new boats, and our Boat of the Year competition, it means something more. As sailors, we wish to recognize good boats that not only are affordable but offer other, tangible rewards. The ability to get couples and families out on the water, to have a weekend escape, to take them on coastal vacations and even maybe a sabbatical to the islands, all without breaking the bank. For 2019, the judging panel determined that one boat had the potential to do these things better than the rest, which is why they awarded the Best Value prize to the Hanse 348.

With a price tag under $200,000, during sea trials the Hanse 348 wowed the judging team from the get-go. “In only about 8 knots of breeze, we were seeing 5.7 knots upwind and pointing very nicely, and even registered 6.5 knots once we cracked off,” said Tim Murphy. “It’s a pretty sweet little boat.”

Italia 9.98

Italia 9.98

Of the performance cruisers that made their North American debut in 2020, in terms of sheer appearance, the futuristic 34-foot Italia 9.98 was easily the most distinctive. There are actually two versions of the boat: the 34 Club—which is the cruising alternative, the primary features of which are its twin wheels—and the 34 Fuoriserie—the racing model, and the one we tested, with its tiller steering being the identifying characteristic.

J/99

Beginning with the popular little J/24 way back in 1977, J/Boats has become famous for its steady introduction of terrific racing and cruising boats, almost all of which shared one main characteristic: They sailed like a witch. More than four decades later, having built more than 50 separate, mind-boggling models, the Johnstone family that designs, markets and sells the brand shows no signs of slowing down. Their latest offering, for 2020, was another fast and fun racer/cruiser: the 32-foot-7-inch J/99.

Best Cheap Boat Brands for the Budget Conscious

24th jan 2024 by lenny rudow.

Rightboat logo

It’s true that most boats are expensive, and price tags for the best boat brands are often eye-popping. That said, expense is a relative term, and boat shoppers need to look at boat pricing in a comparative fashion. Do so, and even though the numbers may be large, some are much lower than others. Of course, no one wants to buy a boat that’s poorly constructed or downright unsafe. So, who builds the best cheap boats? We’ll round up some top picks, while noting that these are National Marine Manufacturer certified boat builders, which means that they maintain a higher level of construction and safety standards than the law requires.

Pontoon Boat Brands

Most pontoon boat builders, including the very best pontoon boat brands , offer a wide range of models from small and simple, to big and complex. As you might guess, those big fancy models are anything but inexpensive, but even top-tier builders generally offer some options that qualify as affordable pontoon boats.

Bennington is certainly known for building high-end pontoon boats, but their “S” lineup of 16’ to 25’ boats features simplicity and low, low pricing. In fact, they start at around the $30,000 mark—less than one third of the base MSRP for pontoon boats in their top-tier lineup. Bennington boats for sale

When you hear the brand name Sea-Doo you probably think of personal watercraft, but their line of Switch pontoons features innovation, performance, and best of all affordability. Their hulls are rotomolded polyethylene rather than being constructed of aluminum, and these sporty little craft are jet-powered. Sea-Doo pontoon boats for sale

Sun Tracker

There’s no doubt that Sun Tracker belongs in any conversation about which are the best cheap boats, because they have a number of offerings that are built every bit as well as their larger, more expensive pontoons yet they keep price in check. And while these models don’t have all the trappings of luxury models, they do have a solid list of basic standard features like Bluetooth stereo systems, telescopic stainless-steel boarding ladders, and extruded Z-bar deck supports.  Sun Tracker boats for sale

Bass Boat Brands

We need to be clear right up front that the best bass boat brands generally focus on building highly engineered, stoutly constructed, high-tech fishing machines that foot-for-foot are some of the most expensive boats on the water. When you’re looking for a cheap bass boat, you simply can’t expect the same level of performance. Scale back your expectations and plan to run for the hotspots at 25 or 30 mph rather than 60 or 70 mph, however, and you’ll find that there are plenty of affordable models.

This builder has a wide range of aluminum bass fishing boats headlined by the Stinger and Skorpion lines. Small aluminum boats are usually less expensive than fiberglass models, which is certainly true in this case, plus since they’re lighter they require less power (and thus less expensive motors). Still, these are fully featured fishing machines with livewells, rod boxes, tackle stowage compartments, and more. Lowe boats for sale

Lowe Skorpion 17

Nitro’s appearance on this list will surprise some, and their affordable options are quite limited, but they do have some models that cost a lot less than you might expect. They’re significantly smaller than most bass boats and don’t feature the same level of electronics nor raw power as high-dollar models, but they do represent one of the least expensive ways to get into a fiberglass bass fishing machine as opposed to buying an aluminum bass boat.  Nitro boats for sale

Nitro Z 17

This boat brand returns to our roundup thanks to their line of aluminum bass boats that starts with the Classic XL—one of the least expensive dedicated bass boats on the water, with a starting MSRP well under the $20,000 mark. What about the rest of the range? It reliably undercuts the competition’s pricing. Tracker boats for sale

Center Console Boat Brands

Center console boats can be expensive. Very expensive. But if you narrow the field to center consoles under 25 feet and aluminum center consoles , you’ll have no problem finding some affordable brands.

Center console models by Bayliner are all under 25 feet and while they don’t have the luxury features of more expensive brands, their all-composite construction makes them some of the best cheap boats around for people who want a fiberglass center console. Plus, they do have a surprising number of features (like livewells, integrated fishboxes, and flush-mount rodholders) for being relatively affordable center consoles.  Bayliner boats for sale

Bayliner Trophy 20CC

Crestliner makes a number of aluminum center consoles in their Retriever line, which is designed for combined fishing, hunting, and utility use. They feature all-welded construction, available camo finish, and options for tunnel hulls for those who want to fish the shallows or get into the marsh.  Crestliner boats for sale

Crestliner 2070 CC

The Gator Tough Jon boat series from G3 features a number of aluminum options with center consoles. Though these don’t have the rough-water capabilities of a deep-V fiberglass boat, they certainly hold their own in most inshore venues, both freshwater and salt, thanks to rugged all-welded construction backed up with a five-year bow-to-stern warranty and a limited lifetime external seam warranty.  G3 boats for sale

G3 Gator Tough 18

Speed Boat Brands

Speed boats are certainly not known for their affordability. If you’re willing to make some sacrifices when it comes to size, however, you can feed your need for speed in a significantly more affordable manner.

This builder makes the roundup by virtue of a single model, the 165 ID. It’s a small but potent jet boat that’s packed with power—and primed for fun. With a Rotax 170 ECT blasting water through the jet drive, you’ll be in for a serious thrill ride; upgrade to the 300 hp ACE 1.6L engine and everyone had better hold on tight. Scarab boats for sale

Scarab 165ID

Yamaha Waverunner

Personal watercraft are boats, too, and if you want to blast out of the gate with acceleration that even puts most wheeled vehicles to shame, no other type of boats can match them. The Yamaha Waverunner performance models may only hold up to three people and certainly don’t have all the perks and comfort features of boats with consoles and cabins, but these things are lightning-fast and are exceptionally affordable when compared to full-blown boats.  Yamaha Waverunner boats for sale

Another personal watercraft option with some serious oomph is the Sea-Doo performance lineup. For less than the cost of most high-end motorcycles they’ll rival their acceleration from a dead  stop and, in our estimation, prove every bit as thrilling plus a whole lot more fun. Sea-Doo for sale

Sea Doo RXT-X

Ski Boat Brands

News flash: dedicated ski boats are anything but cheap. In fact, there are only a handful of ski boats built these days, and they generally MSRP at over or well over $100,000. So, what’s a budget-conscious water skier to do? The first choice is to look on the used boat market . Your second choice would be to settle for a bowrider or runabout, which may not be ideal for competition level skiing but certainly will provide plenty of fun.

Best Cheap Wake Boats

Mission control, we have a problem… again. This is another type of boat that commands extremely high pricing, and there really aren’t any cheap wake boat brands to speak of. Search for used models or check out these moderately expensive options.

Diehard wakesters will argue for inboard power, only, but Chaparral utilizes a stern drive with Volvo Penta’s Forward Drive instead. While this may eliminate it from professional-level wake surfing, it will still do the trick for most of us amateurs, and the smaller models are slightly more affordable than dedicated inboard wake boats.  Chaparral boats for sale

Chaparral 21 Surf

Heyday’s line of wake sports boats certainly isn’t cheap, but all of their offerings do start at under the $100,000 mark. Um, yay? Still, in the world of dedicated wake boats that’s an affordability accomplishment.

Heyday WT 2DC

Bay Boat Brands

Bay boats are an excellent choice for inshore anglers, and they’re some of the most popular types of center consoles around. In fact, many of the top bay boat brands build wide ranges of center consoles of all sizes and price ranges. Still, there are plenty of affordability standouts in the world of cheap fishing boats including these top picks.

Carolina Skiff

Carolina Skiff produces plenty of boats that would rank as expensive, but they also have the “E” lineup, which keeps things simple and affordable. While they’re billed as skiffs rather than bay boats, they have many of the appropriate attributes, like elevated casting decks, shallow draft, and a center console layout. Plus, these are all-composite fishing machines.  Carolina Skiff for sale

Carolina Skiff E21 DLX

Again, we see the difference between aluminum pricing and fiberglass become plain when looking at the bay boats built by Lowe. They won’t necessarily be considered “cheap” by everyone, but they do undercut most fiberglass models. They also come well equipped, with bow-mount electric trolling motors, multiple livewells, and elevated fore and aft casting decks.  Lowe boats for sale

Lowe Bay 22

Lowe Bay 22. Lowe Boats photo.

The Mako Inshore Pro Skiff lineup is eminently affordable compared to most bay boats. It also features Mako’s “Advanced Inverted V” hull design, which helps smooth out the chop and enhance stability. Rounding out the attraction, these all-composite boats are sold in complete boat-motor-trailer packages with a full slate of fishing features.  Mako boats for sale

Mako Pro Skiff 17 CC

Cabin Boat Brands

Again, we’ve come to a category where affordability is a tough goal. Few cabin boats built in this day and age manage to keep pricing under $100K, but there are a few. Feel free to peruse those used boat listings to get into truly affordable territory, but meanwhile there are a couple of brands to check out.

Arima builds a line of very small cabin boats ranging from 19 to 21 feet. Naturally the cabins are compact, but they do offer full protection from the weather and, in most cases, a berth to stretch out on. They tend to be well-outfitted for fishing and feature foam-filled stringers and hand-laid fiberglass hulls.  Arima boats for sale

Arima Sea Ranger 21

A few of the smaller offerings in Jeanneau’s cuddy cabin boat line won’t cause sticker shock for those who are familiar with the pricing on new cabin boats. They also have some nice perks, like cockpits with modular layouts and Seanapps remote monitoring and geofencing.  Jeanneau boats for sale

Jeanneau Leader 6.5 Series 3

Jeanneau Leader 6.5 Series 3. Jeanneau photo.

Again, we want to point out that affordability is in the eye of the beholder, so naturally, what constitutes the best affordable boats will vary for people with different budgets. We’d also note that buying a cheap boat can be risky in some ways if the brand is unknown or you’re shopping the used market. You can feel confident that the brands we’ve called out here, however, are well-known, reliable, and safe. As to whether you find them affordable too, well… that’s for you to say.

10 Best Sailboat Brands (And Why)

10 Best Sailboat Brands | Life of Sailing

December 20, 2023

‍ There's no denying that sailors are certainly a passionate bunch. We’re so passionate about our boats that we always try going for the best sailboats. To make it a lot easier for you, here are the best sailboat brands.

Owning a sailboat is an indulgence that many of us only dream about but very few ever have the privilege of sailing the seas in what they can actually call their own.

While there's nothing wrong with renting a sailboat, the honor of owning one is certain what many sailors dream of.

With a perfectly crafted sailboat as company, gliding through the water, waves, and wind brings some sort of unmatched comfort and peace.

Add this to the fact that sailing takes you far away from the daily hustles and bustles that we've become accustomed to in our daily lives and you'll see why the life of sailing is very appealing to the masses.

But without a proper sailboat, all this fun and the good life of sailing are thrown out of the window.

Contrary to the widespread opinion, owning a sailboat isn't beyond anyone's reach. It's something that we can all achieve. But before getting into that, it's important to know some of the best sailboat brands.

The best sailboat brands will make your life as a sailor a lot easier and more fun. The best sailboat brands have, for decades if not centuries, mastered the art of woodworking. They've dedicated their skills and immense amount of their time to designing and manufacturing nothing but the best quality of sailboats in the industry.

So if you've been looking for the best sailboat brands from all over the world, you've come to the right place. We'll discuss the best of the best, something that will give you a perfect getaway from your normal life.

Table of contents

‍ Must-Have Features for Your Sailboat

Before highlighting the best sailboat brands, it would be appropriate to jog your mind a little with some of the features that must be available in your sailboat.

Choosing a sailboat can sometimes be a matter of compromises. In other words, it's sometimes sensible to accept that a sailboat cannot have all the features that you desire.

As such, it's all about going with a sailboat that has the features that matter to you most.

For this reason, let's look at the most basic features that can make the difference in both safety and comfort while improving your sailing experience.

A Safe and Comfortable Sailing Cockpit

You'll most definitely be spending a huge amount of time in the cockpit. Whether you're keeping watch, trimming sails , helming, or just enjoying the scenery, there's no better place to do all these than from the cockpit. That being said, a good cockpit should have the following.

  • Have a good depth for safety reasons and adequate drainage
  • Should give you a quick and easy access to jammers, cleats, and other important parts of the winch system
  • Should have a seat or seats that are about 35 cm high, 50 to 55 cm wide to provide ideal support
  • The seats should be adjustable to offer maximum comfort and allow you to change your position

GPS Chartplotter

Use a GPS Chartplotter once and your sailing will never be the same without it. It not only allows you to map a course but is also a great way of ensuring that your sailboat exactly follows that course. It also gives you constant updates on ocean conditions, weather conditions , and potential hazards such as deadly currents and sandbars.

A GPS Chartplotter is also an important safety device that can help you in some very critical situations while out there on the water.

For instance, it has a man-overboard button that is essentially meant to allow you to receive coordinates of the exact location should someone fall off your boat.

Electric Winch System

This is an amazing addition to any sailboat. It allows you to sheet a jib even in high and strong winds with a simple press of a button. It also gives you the chance of trimming a mainsail easily while still carry out other essential tasks in the sailboat.

An electric winch system can be of great importance, especially if you're short on crew. This is because it can free up some crew members to carry other important tasks. In other words, it can make duties that would otherwise require more crew members a lot easier.

More importantly, an electric winch system can maintain safety even in the roughest of conditions, thereby preventing you and your crew from getting injured. In essence, an electric winch system will make your sailing a lot safer, less stressful, and more enjoyable.

Reverse Osmosis Watermaker

This is a very valuable accessory, especially if you're going on long sea voyages. You can spend days on end without drinking clean and safe water.

As the name suggests, you can use this accessory to turn seawater into purified drinking water. It uses the reverse osmosis method that's essential not only in removing bacteria and parasites from the water but also in turning the water into purified and safe drinking water.

Even though this device is pricey, it's a great way to mitigate the over-reliance on huge water tanks. All you have to do is to ensure that it's properly maintained and you'll have an endless streak of safe drinking water no matter where you are.

Wide and Clutter-free Deck

While the deck is often an overlooked feature of a sailboat, it can be the difference between a great sailing experience and a stressful one. In essence, the deck of a sailboat should be wide enough and clutter-free.

This is significant as it can enable you to quickly access different parts of your sailboat with hindrance or getting tangled. As you can see, this is particularly important in improving safety and reducing stress.

With that in mind, make sure that the deck is organized in such a way that you can have easy access to sails, masts, and winches.

You should, therefore, avoid sailboats with decks that are designed in such a way that you have to climb on top of the cabin just to access these features. Needless to say, this can be quite unstable and very dangerous especially when conditions are rough.

NORFOLK STAR at sail

The must-see sailing yachts at the Monaco Yacht Show 2024

As the excitement for the Monaco Yacht Show 2024 builds, BOAT takes a look at the top sailing yachts that will be making an appearance this year – from the latest launches to the finest yachts currently for sale .

Norfolk Star

Builder: Perini Navi Year: 1996 (2020) Length: 37m

Pedigree sailing yacht Norfolk Star was designed and built by the Italian shipyard in 1996 and had a "multi-million euro refit" in 2022, according to her broker. The revamp included a new main engine room, two new generators, PLC system, Inmarsat VSAT dome, 505 Williams tender, Doyle sails and Reckmann rigging. With accommodation for six guests, the yacht boasts a family-friendly layout comprising a full-beam master cabin on the lower deck along with two twin cabins – with the option of an additional pullman berth.

On deck, guests can benefit from the comfort the split cockpit area affords, where relaxed seating around a circular coffee table awaits as well as a dining area for eight.  The cherry wood interior also welcomes a bright upper saloon with panoramic views and a more formal main saloon with two sofas and dining area featuring an extendable walnut table.

Norfolk Star is listed for sale and will be exhibited by Burgess and Northrop & Johnson.

Builder: Wally Year: 2024 Length: 36.2m

Having hit the water in June this year, the first wallywind110, Galma , will make her global debut at this year's Monaco Yacht Show and is recognisable by her "luminous light metallic blue" carbon hull paint job "that changes slightly as the light hits her". The sailing yacht's naval architecture comes from German studio judel/vrolijk & co , while interior and exterior lines are designed by Wally in collaboration with Santa Maria Magnolfi . The design demonstrates the comfort of a cruising yacht while maintaining the spirit and performance of a racing boat, and is characterised by her 6.9-metre telescopic keel.

Highlights include an 80-square-metre full-beam cockpit with seating and dining for up to 15 people, as well as an open-plan raised saloon. The yacht also benefits from natural light thanks to a skylight that runs the full length of the coachroof. Accommodation on the wallywind100 model can be a three-cabin layout with a full-beam master suite, or a four-cabin standard layout.

Galma will be exhibited by Wally .

Builder: Vitters Year: 2017 Length: 32.6m

Delivered in 2017 to experienced sailing yacht owners, Ribelle has recently joined the market following a refit, which included a repaint of the hull, mast and boom, and a brand new suit of cruising sails. The sailing yacht is built of carbon fibre by the Dutch yard to a design by Malcolm McKeon and can be sailing with a small crew in cruising mode or, thanks to a self-tacking jib, can be transformed into a true racer.

She is a regatta regular and can often be spotted at some of the world's most prestigious events – including the Maxi Rolex Cup, Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta, Les Voiles de St Tropez and Palma Superyacht Cup. Her Rémi Tessier interior accommodates six guests in three cabins comprising a master suite, VIP suite and a twin cabin.

Ribelle is listed for sale and will be exhibited by Burgess.

Dreamcatcher

Builder: Nautor Swan Year: 2024 Length: 28.8m

With her diesel-electric propulsion, the Swan 88 is the Finnish shipyard's first hybrid sailing yacht and is based on an evolution of its previous yachts. Sitting at the entry point to the world of maxi yachting, the yacht was delivered earlier this year and will make her worldwide debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival .

Dreamcatcher has been described as a "no-compromise cruiser with a racer soul" with a draught of four metres, with options for a shallow-draught, telescopic and performance keel. The yacht is also designed for comfort with a maximum heeling angle of 20 degrees and sports "feminine exterior lines" penned by veteran Swan designer German Frers . Her warm, classic interiors have been styled by Misa Poggi with accommodation for 10 guests.

Dreamcatcher will be exhibited by Nautor Swan .

Builder: Baltic Yachts Year: 2018 Length: 26m

Delivered by the Finnish shipyard in 2018, Mini Y is a Baltic 85 model designed by UK naval architect Dixon Yacht Design . Her silver hull and superstructure were built of carbon-fibre composite and the owner opted for a telescopic lifting keel that can reduce the draft from 4.3 metres to 2.95 metres when required. Mark Whiteley Design handled the  yacht's interior décor , with accommodation for up to four guests split between an owner’s cabin and a guest cabin.

On deck, the cockpit has a fold-out table for guests to enjoy, while the helmsman has the choice of two wheels. The guest cockpit can be completely covered for protection while racing, the navigation instruments still visible on the aft face. Mini Y joined the market earlier this year.

Mini Y is listed for sale and will be exhibited by Baltic Yachts and Edmiston.

Builder: Yonca Year: 2019 (2023) Length: 26.8m

Tuzla-based shipyard Yonca officially entered the leisure marine market with the launch of Mishi Yachts earlier this year. The new brand made its debut with two sailing models, measuring 26.8 metres and 31 metres – the first of which is the Mishi 88, which will be on exhibit at the Monaco Yacht Show 2024. Osman Tanju Kalaycıoğlu , Özgür Terzioğlu and Taka Yacht are responsible for the naval architectecture and exterior design, while interiors are the work of Aylin Örs .

The sloop's defining features include a spacious aft deck with a dining space which can comfortably seat ten guests. Offering shelter from the elements, the large cockpit features a carbon composite hard-top aft, while the swim platform has enough room in its back for a 3.5-meter inflatable tender. Accommodation is for six guests across a master cabin and two guest cabins, with further space for the captain and crew.

Mishi 88 will be exhibited by Mishi Yachts.

Builder: Yyachts Year: 2024 Length: 23.9m

German yachtbuilder YYachts is bringing its Y8 model to the Monaco Yacht Show. Javier Jaudenes of Surge-Projects worked alongside the in-house design team on naval architecture to create the model's new silhouette with a Scandi-inspired interior by Danish designer David Thulstrup. YYachts offers four pre-designed interior styles where owners can tailor the saloon area to their tastes.

A particular highlight is the owner's suite, which includes a separate saloon and can be located either in the bow or in the stern with direct access to the cockpit. In terms of technical details, the Y8 features a standard carbon mast, hydraulic main sheet system and all winches close to the helm stations. These features, along with the self-tacking jib and a lack of a backstay, enhance the yacht's performance and ease of handling.

Y8 will be exhibited by Yyachts.

10 Most Affordable Bowrider Boats

cheap bowrider boats

There are so many relatively inexpensive open-bow runabouts on the market that it’s difficult to narrow the field to the 10 most affordable bowriders . But we’ll do our best, because we know it’ll be even tougher for you to pick out just one that’s ideal for your own personal needs and desires.

First, let’s define affordable: the average American family has an entertainment budget of $3,200 a year, which shakes out to $266 a month. That would get you a boat in the $30,000 range with no money down. But even though some no-money deals do happen these days, most people will put down a payment when they purchase. So, the actual affordability bar will usually be closer to $35,000. If your budget allows for a bit more or a bit less, check out our Boat Loan Calculator to see just how much you can move that mark.

Meanwhile, recognizing that a boat’s price can vary quite a bit depending on how you want it outfitted, and that different people have different thoughts as to what constitutes affordability, let’s take a closer look at 10 bowrider boat models that meet this bar.

Explore All Bowrider Brands & Models

Bayliner VR4

1. Bayliner VR4

The sticker starts at a tick over $25,000 for the Bayliner VR4 , which is the latest model to join Bayliner’s new VR series. At 18’10 long, however, the VR4 offers quite a bit of size for the price. It can carry up to seven passengers, has a storage length of 21’7” sitting on the standard trailer, and can also be had in a stern-drive version (see Outboard vs. Inboard: Which Motor is Right for You?  for a details on the different types of marine power systems available).

One feature unique to the VR4 is what Bayliner calls its “AftAdvantage” design, which minimizes gunwale width in the cockpit and increases the boat’s interior volume.

Visit Bayliner to learn more.

Campion A16 OB BR

2. Campion A16 OB BR

The Campion A16 OB BR is an outboard-powered 16-footer that can take up to 90 horses on the transom and stay within our affordability range. The A16 has a hidden trick up its sleeve, too, in the form of Kevlar laminate reinforcements that give it additional strength without increasing weight. It has a standard bowrider layout with pedestal seating at the helm and passenger’s console, seating aft, and seating in the bow cockpit.

You’ll also spot plenty of quality details on this model that you won’t necessarily find on most relatively low-cost boats, like cup holders, cleats, and grab handles that are stainless-steel instead of plastic; a color-coded electrical system; and flip-up bolster seats with headrests.

Visit Campion Marine to learn more.

Chaparral 19 SSI

3. Chaparral 19 SSI

The Chaparral 19 SSI is one of the few models in this price range to come with a standard sterndrive powerplant (a 200 HP Mercury 5.4L MPI with an Alpha drive), and while it does sit on the high side of our affordability mark with a $34,195 NAP, at 19’4” long and 7’6” wide it’s also the largest boat to make the mark in this mix. It has the very biggest passenger capacity with a max rating of 11, and with the stern drive packed into the transom it also offers the largest aft sunpad of any of these options.

We also love the integrated cooler under the center aft flip-up seat, the fact that wrap-around bolsters provide padding at the sides in the bow cockpit, and the thoughtful engineering that integrates items like cupholders and stereo speaker housings.

Visit Chaparral Boats to learn more.

Four Winns Horizon 190

4. Four Winns Horizon 190

The Four Winns Horizon 190 breaks our self-imposed price barrier a bit with a $37,073 starting point, but if you don’t need a trailer it comes right back down to the mark and factory and dealer rebates can push that number down even further. And this model is well worth considering, especially if you want quality touches often found only on more expensive boats. In the bow, for example, bolsters pad the sides all the way around the cockpit to enhance comfort.

Cleats are the stainless-steel pull-up variety, the in-floor ski locker hatch swings up on a gas-assist strut, helm and passenger’s seats have flip-down bolsters, and on either side of the engine box aft-facing seats are integrated into the transom.

Visit Four Winns to learn more.

Glastron GT 180

5. Glastron GT 180

The Glastron GT 180 carries an MSRP of $30,067 and starts at a bottom line of $27,500, but if you up that ante to $29,330, you can get the Sport version which gets you enhanced graphics, custom gauges, and a swim platform mat. Either way, this 17’10 long bowrider comes with a 90-horsepower Mercury FourStroke outboard (which can be optioned all the way up to 150 horses), ComfortRide flip-up bolster seats, a Bluetooth stereo with two speakers, and a custom-matched single-axel trailer with brakes. Unlike some models this one has padded bolsters to either side in the bow cockpit, for extra comfort.

We also note that this boat has a relatively aggressive V-shape to its hull (see Boat Hull Types, Shapes & Designs ) with a 20-degree transom deadrise, so you’ll be ready to take on some serious wave action.

Visit Glastron to learn more.

Princecraft Sport 172 Max

6. Princecraft Sport 172 Max

Boaters in search of a bowrider that does double-duty as a fishing boat will be interested in the Princecraft 172 Max , the only aluminum rig in this round-up, which comes with a 90-horsepower Mercury FourStroke outboard engine and a galvanized trailer for a starting price of $28,599. That package includes the family-oriented features that any good bowrider needs, like bow seat cushions, a stereo, and a Bimini top. But it also comes with extra perks that aren’t always included on other rigs, like a removable ski tow pylon and a swing-away tongue for the trailer.

The anglers in the family will love having the ability to pull off the bow seat cushions and stand on the casting deck for fishing trips, plus there’s a 17-gallon livewell, an integrated locking rodbox, and pre-rigging for a bow-mount electric trolling motor.

Visit Princecraft to learn more.

Rinker 180QX

7. Rinker 180QX

The Rinker 180QX is another bowrider that delivers more overall size than most competitors, with an 18’8” length overall but a price tag that starts at just a hair over $27,000. That added size means you can carry up to eight passengers out for a day on the water, and between the transom bench seating, passenger’s and helm pedestal seats, and the bow cockpit seats, everyone will have a spot to sit down.

But on top of that, this boat also comes with a number of standard features that the majority of builders leave off the list. The Kicker stereo, ski tow pylon, snap-in SoftStep deck mats, and the Bimini top with boot are all included at the list price.

Visit Rinker Boats to learn more.

Scarab Jet 165 ID

8. Scarab Jet 165 ID

If you like the idea of owning a jet boat , the Scarab Jet 165 ID will be one to check out. Its layout is quite unconventional for a bowrider, with cockpit seating lined up along a transom that’s been pushed forward to make space for aft-facing seats above the extended swim platform. The bow’s unusual, too, with seating in front of the helm station and on the port side.

This boat also comes with the most powerful standard powerplant in the mix, a 150-horsepower Rotax inboard jet. And as anyone who’s been on a jet boat of this nature can attest, handling is utterly thrilling, with the ability to carve out hair-pin turns, blast out doughnuts, and leap across boat wakes.

Visit Scarab Boats to learn more.

tahoe T16 2021

9. Tahoe T16

Called out as one of the Top 12 New Boats Under $21K for 2021 , the Tahoe T16 is one of the most easily afforded boats in our round-up. The National No Haggle No Hassle price tag is a mere $17,595, making it less expensive than all but the five least expensive cars sold in the United States today—yet everyone will agree, it’s a whole lot more fun to drive around in than a Chevy Spark.

It also has a rather unusual layout with seating across the back and in the bow, but a sunpad spanning the transom just above the swim platform. Plus, the towing weight for the entire boat-motor-trailer package is a mere 2,200 pounds. That means you’ll be able to haul it down the highway on your way to new adventures it with just any tow vehicle larger than, well, a Chevy Spark.

Visit Tahoe to learn more.

Yamaha SX190

10. Yamaha SX190

Another jet boat option in the bowrider world is the Yamaha SX190 , which checks in at a base price of $30,649. Power is produced by a Yamaha 1812cc 1.8-liter high-output engine pumping water through a 155 mm high-pressure pump, and is capped off by an articulating keel that takes the jet’s awesome handling up yet another notch. There’s more that sets this boat apart from the competition, however, in that it comes with Yamaha’s Connext touchscreen control system and includes techy features like a three-position no-wake mode and cruise assist (similar to cruise control but it sets a steady engine rpm as opposed to a steady peed).

Also note that this boat-motor-trailer is complete, and if you’re willing to up the ante to $33,149 you can get the AR version, which comes with an aluminum folding wakeboarding tower.

Visit Yamaha Boats to learn more.

There are countless other models that fall inside of or close to these affordability parameters, but as we noted right up front, everyone’s own personal idea of what exactly “affordable” means will vary. There are also several types of boats that are very similar to bowriders, such as deck boats and fish-and-ski boats , which people interested in bowriders may want to consider. Because no matter what model you ultimately decide on, discovering that you can afford any type of boat means discovering fun, fun, and more fun for you and your family.

Outboard Motor Battery: What Size Do I Need & What’s Best for My Boat?

New to boating and trying to figure out what outboard motor battery you need?

However, you might get overwhelmed by the vast choice of outboard motor batteries in the market.

To name just a few: marine batteries, lithium batteries, lead-acid batteries, AGM batteries, deep cycle batteries, starting or cranking batteries…

And all outboard motor batteries are available in various volts, sizes, brands, etc.

The more you search online, the more confused you might be.

You are not alone! Here we will explain all your confusion in a simple guide.

If you are one of those who are trying to figure out the battery needs for your boat (types, sizes, etc), read this post to find quick answers.

Besides that, you will also learn about outboard motor battery wiring and charging in minutes.

  • FAQs About Outboard Batteries

Outboard Motor & Battery

What kind of battery do I need for an outboard motor?

You might have seen outboard motor batteries with confusing labels. In fact, they are categorized according to their purposes and chemistry.

2 Types Based on Purposes

Basically, all outboard motor marine batteries serve two purposes: starting the engine or running the electrical load onboard. This divides outboard motor batteries into two types.

  • Starting Batteries

As the name implies, a starting battery (or cranking battery) is ultimately designed to start the engine. This kind of outboard motor battery comes with high CCA values, providing high current surges and cranking amps to start your engine.

If using the wrong battery that’s not designed for a starting (or high-power) application, you will have a high chance of starting a fire in the voltage regulator and killing the battery.

  • Deep Cycle Batteries

By contrast, a deep cycle battery is made for discharge and supports intensive cycling. It provides rechargeable power for many cycles, ideal for running electric outboard motors, trolling motors, and electronics onboard.

Compared with starting batteries, deep cycle batteries are more expensive and heavy, but they are perfect for powering stuff without an engine running.

Key takeaway:

Basically, the kind of battery you need for an outboard ultimately depends on your purpose.

If you’re looking for a battery for an electric start outboard motor (vs pull start) , the starting battery is what you want. However, if you own an electric outboard or trolling motor, you should use deep cycle batteries ( LiFePO4 is recommended).

4 Types Based on Chemistry

You will find four kinds of outboard motor batteries if you look at their chemistry inside the cells, namely flooded batteries, gel batteries, AGM batteries (advanced lead-acid batteries), and lithium batteries.

Among them, lithium is a HUGE upgrade in battery technology, and there are a great number of advantages that people run to lithium (especially LiFePO4) for their outboard motors:

You can fully discharge the battery cells every day (almost 100% vs 50% for AGM) without killing them. Moreover, they can recharge 2k-10k times vs 300-800 AGM.

These mean significantly more power capacity, so it can last twice as long on the water.

Not to mention they’re also a lot smaller and lighter than the comparable lead-acid battery, and charge much faster. And you can see the battery state on your phone or via a digital screen.

That’s why all reputable electric outboard motor brands, including ePropulsion , use lithium (or even LiFePO4) batteries as their accompanying batteries.

What size battery do I need for an outboard motor? What amp-hour rating should I get?

The electric outboard motor batteries are available in a variety of sizes and power levels.

Here is how to calculate the outboard battery sizes in simple steps:

Method #1. Start with Amps.

Step 1. Get the outboard motor electric consumption in Amps (usually available in the manual). Or calculate with Amps = Watts / Volts.

Step 2. Calculate the Amp hour rating of the outboard motor (Ah = Amps x Time).

This Ah rating indicates the battery size that will be sufficient for your requirements.

For example, if your motor consumes about 60 Amps and you want an outboard motor battery that will last 3 hours, you will need a 180 Ah ( = 60 Amps x 3 hrs) battery.

Method #2. Start with Wattage.

(Use this method if you know the wattage rating of your outboard motor.)

Step 1. Calculate the total watt required for the outboard motor battery (Wh = Watt x Time).

Step 2. Calculate the Ah rating with the given voltage (Ah = Wh / Volts).

For example, if you own a 1 kW outboard motor ePropulsion Spirit Evo and you want to use it for six hours on a 48V boat system (on a single charge), you will need a 125 Ah battery.

Note that the calculation is under full load and max amp draw (meaning you’re running the motor wide open the whole time).

In real life, the amp will be much less. That’s to say, you may get away with a smaller battery if you run at part throttle with intermittent use.

However, always go for a larger battery if you go with AGM/lead-acid deep cycle batteries.

Generally, you don’t want to discharge the battery more than 50% to prevent damage. So half the rated capacity.

Alternatively, lithium batteries can be more fully discharged without damage, so you can use more of the rated capacity, which is a big plus for outboard motor batteries.

Reading this far, I believe you should be able to decide the best outboard motor battery for your boat. If you are still not sure, here is a simple guide to help you make a quick decision.

Essentially, three things to consider:

If you are looking for a small outboard motor battery, the weight should be a top priority.

You will never want an outboard motor battery to sink your small boat and break your back every time you carry it from your car and to the dock.

In that case, the lightweight lithium battery would better fit your needs.

Typically, a 12V 100Ah lead acid battery weighs over 60 lbs. Comparatively, a 100Ah LiFePO4 battery weighs only 25 lbs. So you can easily shave about 35 lbs off the weight in your boat.

Not to mention its larger usable battery capacity and smaller lighter battery cell.

As a Zodiac boat owner reported, his 12V LiFePO4 outboard motor battery lasts 2 times as long as a 120 Ah lead acid that weighs 3 times what the LiFePO4 does.

#2. Battery Life

Outboard motor battery life should be a deciding factor in purchase decisions. You need to make sure the outboard motor battery gets enough juice to do the job.

So choose an outboard motor battery that comes with a larger battery capacity and longer life cycles. And the lithium battery goes a long way in these two aspects, with at least 80% DoD (depth of charge) and 5 times more charge cycles than lead-acid batteries.

However, how long your outboard motor battery can run actually depends on a lot more factors.

One of the key factors is outboard power. The best battery for an 25 HP outboard motor is definitely different from the one for 40 HP, since they are running at different watts.

For example, if your motor runs at 300W and you use it with a 230Wh LiFePO4 battery, you will get 40 to 50 minutes’ continuous usage out of this battery.

Note that throttle power settings also make a great difference in your outboard motor battery life:

When moving a boat through water in displacement mode, to go twice as fast you must increase the power about fourfold. That’s to say, if it theoretically takes 200W to go at 2 knots, it would take 800 watts to go at 4 knots.

At the same time, going at half throttle may quadruple your range, even though you’ll get there half as fast. Many electric boat owners simply go quite slowly to make the cost and physics add up.

Also, you can use a solar panel to help keep your outboard motor battery topped up.

Further Reading: Solar Powered Boat Motors: Easiest Way to Set up Your Solar Boat

The last step to get the best bang for your buck is to compare costs.

And that’s not all about the price tags.

Although the lithium outboard motor battery is more expensive, it can last 10+ years if taken care of properly.

Actually, it becomes cheaper if you plan to use it for many years. By this I mean that it may cost 2 times more upfront, but it will survive roughly 5 times as many cycles.

All in all, a lithium battery would be the best outboard motor battery option nowadays if you want to minimize size and weight and don’t mind a higher upfront cost.

Other than that, lead acid is also a reliable technology, proven and improved over hundreds of years. If you have a tight budget, go for a larger lead-acid battery.

How to wire an outboard motor to its battery?

In fact, it’s easy to hook up your outboard motor battery if you follow the manual. You don’t need to fumble with the outboard motor battery cables to get it plugged in.

Basically, you just need to connect the outboard motor and battery with the provided switch cable and communication cable. Also, the control system should be connected to the battery with communication cables.

Some small outboards come with an integrated battery, making it easy for the battery wiring.

For example, the 3 HP ePropulsion Spirit 1.0 Evo only requires you to place the battery in place (secured by two side slots), and then connect the power cable to the battery.

Small Outboard Motor Battery

How to charge an outboard motor battery?

Generally speaking, an outboard motor battery needs to be charged with a specialized charger. And the charger decides the charging efficiency.

Fast chargers are available for some models, or you can also use two or more chargers in parallel connection to speed up the charging.

Does an outboard motor charge the battery itself?

Yes, most outboard motors can charge a battery directly while running just like your car’s motor can charge its battery:

The engines come with an alternator or generator. When you start the engine up, the engine will charge the starting outboard motor battery until full. If there is an aux battery, it will then switch over and charge the aux battery.

More About Outboard Motor Batteries

1. does an outboard motor need a battery.

Yes, your outboard motor will need a battery to work unless it’s a pull start.

2. Can a lithium battery start an outboard motor?

Standard deep-cycle lithium batteries are not designed for starter uses.

However, lithium batteries for starting outboard motors are now available, which are specially designed to meet the strict specifications for marine cranking use.

In fact, some outboard manufacturers, such as Mercury Marine, encourage users to use qualified lithium batteries to start the engine for optimal performance.

3. Does an outboard motor charge the battery when running?

Yes, you can charge a battery from an outboard by burning fuel. For electric outboards, some models (including ePropulsion Navy Evo ) can collect electricity from wind and water and charge themselves via a hydrogeneration function.

4. Can an outboard motor charge a lithium battery?

Unfortunately, most outboard motors can not charge a lithium battery directly. You will need a DC/DC charger to make it possible.

Other than that, you can invest in an electric outboard motor with hydrogeneration function which allows the motor to charge itself while sailing.

Hopefully, this post can help you clear your confusion about outboard motor batteries. If you have other concerns, please leave your question in the comment below and I will get back to you ASAP and add it to the list.
