Top 10 largest Catamarans in the world

Characterised as a multi-hulled watercraft, a catamaran is a marine vessel comprising two proportioned hulls giving her greater stability and manoeuvrability. Catamarans also have a shallow draft which enables them to enter unexplored regions beyond the reach of sailing yachts or cruise ships.

Their invention is attributed to the Austronesian peoples of Southeast Asia, while the first European Catamaran was built in the 16th century by scientist William Petty. Capable of attaining greater speeds, catamarans are used for recreational sailing, cruising and racing. Modern Catamarans have luxurious features and marvellous design, which makes them enticing.

1. Hodor ( 217 Ft.)

Renowned as the world’s largest floating toy box, the 66.2 m long SHADOWCAT Hodor was built by Astilleros Armon in Spain. Incat Crowther and YCTS. Ltd worked on her functional design and naval architecture, while the interiors were chosen by Oliver Design. Painted grey with vibrant orange lines running across its hull, the catamaran is as robust as it looks.

Launched in 2019, she has a maximum sailing speed of 22.5 knots derived from two MTU diesel engines. With a 14-metre beam, she has a gross tonnage of 1525 tonnes respectively. In terms of LOA, she ranks among the top five per cent in the world. She defeats her counterparts both by average speed and volume.

She is donned with aluminium; her hull, deck and even superstructure are made of this malleable and corrosion-resistant metal. Presently sailing under the flag of the Cayman Islands, Hodor is a treasure-house of water sports gear, filled with nine jet skis, four water bikes, laser dinghies, snorkelers, fishing equipment etc.

The empty space below the main deck is reserved for the Seamagine Aurora-3 submersible which will be delivered soon. Its main attraction is the 17-metre Nor-Tech 560 sports centre console attached to a hydraulic lift system for putting it in water. The largest catamaran is managed by 20 crew members and staff.

2. Sunreef 49 Power Cat ( 160.8 Ft)

Constructed by the Polish builder Sunreef Yachts, the multihull was fitted in Gdansk and delivered in 2021. Flaunting a classy white exterior, it is an embodiment of cutting-edge marine technology and fresh naval design.

It has three decks and expansive outdoor areas, including an open bar, a swimming pool, a helipad and a forward terrace. Its sun deck lounge has a spa pool, sun pads and even a saloon. With a broad beam of 16.85 metres, the yacht has 8 cabins which comfortably sleep 17 crew personnel and offers luxury accommodation for 11 guests. Five bedrooms on the main deck are equipped with a private balcony.

Low drag, a consequence of the specially designed twin-hull, makes the catamaran glide gracefully on the water while optimising efficiency and low fuel consumption. It has a 90,000-litre fuel tank which enables the power cat to cover 5000 nautical miles without a stopover. Driven by two 3400 HP engines, the superyacht has a top speed of 21 knots and carries three tenders, water sports gear and several jet skis.

3. Charley ( 150 Ft.)

Charley was launched in 2016 as a support yacht to serve the superyacht White Rabbit Gulf, both constructed by the shipbuilding company Eco Yachts. The 46 m long and 14 m wide catamaran has a white exterior, three teak decks and modern fittings. Its naval architecture, interiors and exterior design were taken care of by LOMOcean.

Labelled as the largest composite resin-infused yacht made in Australia, Charley was carefully assembled near Fremantle. With a volume of 702 gross tonnes, she has spacious interiors and outdoor entertainment areas to keep her guests engaged.

However, her most attractive feature is the 12-metre long tender catamaran called Vicky, equipped with a platform located at Charley’s stern. It can store some RIBs, tenders, personal watercraft and one hovercraft.

Propelled by two 2,700hp Cummins QSK60 engines and two propellers, Charley has a 60,000-litre fuel tank which enables her to travel 2,500 nautical miles at the cruising speed of 16 knots.

She has a 3.2 m draft which allows her to traverse shallow bays and narrow canals or even cruise near the shoreline. Possessing a GRP hull and superstructure, Charley has three suites for taking in 5 guests.

4. Moecca ( 148 Ft.)

The catamaran motor yacht Moecca was constructed by Oceanfast yachts in Australia. Designed to provide a luxurious sailing experience with moderately-decorated functional spaces, it has a simplistic classic exterior. Delivered in 1992, it underwent maintenance and repair in 2006. Refurbished in the same year, Moecca is fully air-conditioned, having expansive outdoor areas for sunbathing and relaxing.

Her curves are spectacular, thanks to Bannenberg Designs Limited, which crafted her exterior while Phill Curran was responsible for naval architecture. Having a 13 m or 42.7 feet beam, she has seven suites that conveniently accommodate 12 guests and six small yet well-furnished cabins for 11 crew members.

Its spacious salon has two seating areas, a home-theatre set-up and a 12-seater alfresco dining room connected to a bar and a refrigeration room. Her aft deck is enriched with circular sofas and side tables. More open space is provided on the upper deck, which incorporates an open pool and a small workout space. All these amenities are curated by the English design house Bannenberg and Rowell.

She can travel 2200 nautical miles at a maximum speed of 25 knots, achieved by two powerful MTU diesel engines. Moecca is sturdy yet elegant, with a green aluminium hull and a GRP superstructure. Her sides are panelled with mildly-fragrant wood. She has a 1.8 m draft and water tanks capable of storing 15,000 litres of fresh water.

5. HeySea Vista ( 140 Ft.)

Launched in 2020, the golden hulled Vista is an amalgamation of absolute royalty and finesse. Constructed by the Hey Sea Yachts Group, a prominent yacht manufacturer in China, Vista is a fully custom-designed project built in a 66,700 square m shipyard lying in the Pearl River Delta region near Hong Kong. One of the most challenging aspects of its construction was to attain a perfect shimmering gold finish, achieved by delicate yet continuous polishing.

Her stylish appearance and functional naval design were crafted by the Heysea marine architects and interior designers. The twin-hull allows for voluminous interiors carefully chosen by Horizontal Design to match her stunning fibreglass superstructure.

Vista is adorned with beautiful paintings showcasing marine life, modern art pieces and metallic fittings. She has five bedrooms that comfortably sleep 10 people. The yacht is managed by a 15-member crew.

Coming to the technicalities, she is driven by two Volvo 725 HP engines allowing her to reach a top speed of 15 knots. The vessel can go up to 4000 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 10 knots. Vista has been the biggest project of HeySea, which brought her international appreciation.

6. Sarha ( 137 Ft.)

Registered at the Port of George Town and sailing under the Cayman Islands Flag, Sarha is a 40 m motor yacht built by Sea Management, fabricated in Australia and launched in 1989. With its sleek white exterior and blue windows, she is a piece of sheer beauty and class.

She was designed by John Winterbotham & Partners while her interiors were done by H2 Yacht Design. Refitted in 2002, she boasts a steel hull and an aluminium and steel superstructure complemented by a fine teak deck with spacious seating areas.

Sarha can travel 3000 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 10 knots, and her top speed is 13 knots. She is fitted with two 2340 HP diesel engines that generate 1722 kilowatts. She is driven by two propellers and Koopnautic thrusters. Her home port is Abu Dhabi, and her water tanks carry 20,000 litres of fresh water.

Sarha can accommodate 30 guests and 11 crew members in beautiful, well-ventilated cabins having double beds. She has a gross tonnage of 726 tonnes and a 500-tonne displacement. Having a wide beam of 12.9 m, she has a shallow draft of about 2.7 metres.

7. Royal Falcon One ( 135 Ft.)

Flaunting a modern naval design, Royal Falcon One is a stunner of the Singapore-based yacht builder, Royal Falcon Fleet. Curated by the renowned Porsche Design Studio, she has been described as a Spaceship on Water by her makers, while some compare her to a sports car. She has an aluminium hull and superstructure and three teak decks.

Enriched with appealing aesthetics, this dual-hulled yacht offers the highest comfort and luxury. She has five cabins to accommodate 10 guests, three master suites and a lounge on the main deck. Its main attraction is the saloon which offers a 360-degree ocean view due to its glass walls.

The 12.5 m broad beam allows for more entertainment and relaxation space. Its sundeck has a jacuzzi and a steam sauna. The crew cabins are located near the stern, concealed by the ship’s twin hulls. Delivered in 2019, it has a maximum speed of 35 knots, a 1.7 m draft and a gross tonnage of 499 tonnes.

8. Silver Cloud (134 Ft.)

Portraying exemplary marine engineering , Silver Cloud was constructed by Abeking & Rasmussen in Germany. Infused with a small waterplane area twin hull, commonly called SWATH, its distinguishing feature is smooth sailing in harsh waters, especially the North Sea.

It was sold for 16 million dollars to Alexander Wallace Dreyfoos Junior, an American businessman based in New York. As per news reports, the vessel will be renamed Nurja. With a 58 feet beam and a 13.5-foot draft, she has a maximum speed of 14 knots.

Silver Cloud is the two-time winner of the World Superyacht Award, owing to its highly trained crew and world-class reputation. It has five cabins that comfortably sleep 12 guests, equipped with televisions and private bathrooms. The main attraction is the saloon with large windows and glass doors, designed by Michael Kirschstein. It also contains a spa, gymnasium, diving equipment and a helipad.

9. Zenith ( 131 Feet)

Constructed by Australia-based Sabre Catamarans in 2012, the 40.5 m Zenith is a luxury motor yacht which redefines sophistication and style. She has a 10.5 m beam, a 1.5 m draft and an interior volume of 461 gross tonnes. She was sold in 2018 for a whopping 19 million dollars.

Her luxurious cabins can take in 10 guests, designed by Water Line, while her eye-catching exteriors were chosen by Incat Crowther. Having an aluminium hull and superstructure, she can attain a top speed of 29 knots due to the powerful MTU engines. Her fuel tanks can hold up to 51,800 litres of diesel, while freshwater tanks can carry 3790 litres.

American rock maple was used for interior panelling along with Queensland Maple. It has a spacious open lounge with four sofas. The main deck features a lavish dining area attached to a fully equipped media room and a cocktail bar.

10. The Beast ( 129 Ft.)

Described as somewhat different and unique by her owners, the Beast is true to its name. Having a military-type camouflage exterior, she is not easy to spot among other sailing vessels. She belongs to the entrepreneur, Sir Michael Hill and has several interesting features, the first being a 13 m fishing boat fitted on its main deck, known as Baby beast.

Winner of several awards, the Beast is 39.2 metres long and has a volume of 493 gross tonnes. She was delivered in 2019 by Profab Central Engineering Limited, and her decor was styled by the famous Oceania Interiors. She has a master suite and five cabins for sleeping 12 guests and accommodation for nine crew members.

Known for her outstanding seagoing capabilities, the Beast is available for charter in the South Pacific. Having a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, she is loaded with the latest water gear such as four kayaks, paddleboards, and fishing and diving equipment. She can reach a top speed of 15 knots while her cruising speed is 10 knots.

A look on board the extraordinary 86m Aquijo, the world’s largest ketch

The biggest ketch-rigged yacht on the water, Aquijo is designed to push boundaries and horizons. Helen Fretter talks to her designers

The largest Bermudan rigged ketch ever launched, the 86m  Aquijo was designed by Bill Tripp and launched last year.

The build came about through a new collaboration between the two Dutch yards of Vitters and OceanCo, combining the former’s superyacht expertise with the latter’s custom motoryacht knowledge to create one of the largest sailing yachts in the world (see video of Sailing Yacht A, the world’s largest sail-assisted vessel, during early sea trials) .

The scale of Aquijo is remarkable: at 85m her LOA is considerably greater than the 60m superyacht designs Vitters is more accustomed to working on, hence she was built at OceanCo’s larger seafront site in Alblasserdam, the Netherlands. A steel hull and aluminium superstructure give a gross tonnage of 1,500.

Her twin carbon fibre masts reach 91m above the waterline, with matched main and mizzen. North 3Di sails of over 1,100 square metres each, give a total sail area of 3,247 square metres. Add in a code sail, and the canvas area tops 5,050 square metres. According to Vitters, Aquijo ’s lifting keel is the largest ever designed, at 220 tons (200 tonnes) of lead, with a minimum draught of 5.2m and maximum of 11.6m.

The yacht’s range under engine at 13 knots is 3,200 nautical miles and she has accommodation for 30 in total (12 guests, two owners, a captain, three officers and 12 additional crew).

However, her designer Bill Tripp says that it was sailing performance that drove the design. “We designed Aquijo around sailing loads and sheet loads, to keep them in a range that was controlled. She started design life as a sailboat that encompassed the machinery of a motoryacht, but she is not shaped as a motoryacht – she is easily driven.”

He adds: “Aquijo is also a sophisticated machine and brings most aspects of a 1600GT motoryacht with her. But she is for getting out there, and for going sailing. In Greece [last] summer, she would go out for an afternoon of sailing in a 35 knot Meltemi because it is so much fun to sail at 20 knots as if on rails.”

The new ChessieRacing designed by Bill Tripp is a true designer daysailer, but what is she like to sail?

Sail controls

Aquijo is designed for long distance bluewater exploration, hence limiting the air draught to fit through the Panama Canal (46m) was no longer a consideration. That freed up the design team to create one of the largest true sailing yachts ever conceived.

To make raising the enormous sail area possible, sophisticated reefing and sail handling systems have been developed. In-boom furling system allows the main and mizzen sails to be furled or unfurled in just four seconds. Custom built carbon and aluminium 40-ton winches control the sheets and halyards.

“When we go head to wind we hoist the main and the mizzen together, and I’d say on average that’s a six minute process,” says Tripp. “Then once they’re up you just bear off, and roll out the jib – 30 seconds say. And then you’re off, you have three sails up, and you’re only thinking about those three sails. It means going sailing is pretty easy.”

When sailing at this scale, manoeuvres take a degree of forward planning. “Because we have a staysail, and a heavy weather jib, we have to furl the big jib when tacking,” explains Tripp.

“Vitters organised a system that keeps just a nice amount of tension on the jib sheets furling in and out so that they are not flailing about. It’s not a dinghy tack, but it is safe and orderly. The spinnaker is on a fast furler and furls up in 30 seconds, making gybes less complex.”

Designed to function at up to 20° of heel, Aquijo ’s hull has been tested to withstand the full force of rigging and keel, including mast compression and the effects of her 200-tonne keel, in a knock-down situation. Vitters custom designed a steering system to give direct feedback of the hydrodynamic pressure on the rudders to the twin wheels to create the elusive sailing ‘feel’. There are two submarine anchors in a compartment concealed behind a flush hull closing plate.

Consistency of style

The owner’s cabin is situated on its own top deck, with a private outside area. Robert Voges, of Dølker and Voges, which designed the interior, says that the whole upper deck abaft of the wheelhouse is the owner’s area.

The sociable main deck includes the dining room and main saloon, linked to the outside deck by an inside-outside bar. The yacht’s real showcase feature is the ‘beach club’ on the lower deck, which includes a jacuzzi, sauna, hammam/Turkish bath, rainfall shower, and room for gym equipment, with an open walkway through to the transom swim platform. There is a further whirlpool spa bath on the outer deck.

A consistent aesthetic style has been adopted right throughout the yacht, according to Voges, who comments: “The brief from the owner was the whole area should look, if not the same, but be one language. All the details are the same, even in the crew area.”

Materials are luxurious; as the mast runs through two interior decks it is clad in flawless high shine stainless steel complete with integrated LED lighting – the single biggest technical challenge of the interior build according to Voges.

But it is the sea itself that provides the main focal point. Voges comments: “One of the most important things that the owners asked me for was to make everything feel open, to feel that there is not a difference between inside and outside, so you can feel the ocean.

From each position where you are sitting – dining or in the salon, or in the cabins – you can always see the water. We have planned the windows so even from the bed, you can see the water.”

Ambitious plans

Aquijo is available for charter, but the owner also has some ambitious voyages of his own in mind, not least a trip around Cape Horn.

Asked what inspires people to build a yacht of Aquijo ’s stature, designer Bill Tripp comments: “They’re not looking for the sure thing, they’re really looking for the unknown. They don’t know what it’ll be like sailing in South Georgia, or diving on a reef with hammerhead sharks at night. These are experiences they will remember all their life.

“On a boat like Aquijo it’s the use of it, and the feeling you get. It’s not about fine wines or great speaker systems, it’s about bringing you to things you wouldn’t otherwise experience.”

Both experienced yachting enthusiasts and those new to the world of yacht charters choose to holiday and hold events aboard luxury catamarans for their unique advantages over monohulled vessels, and these 10 largest luxury catamarans available for charter are amongst the best available today. Earthen tones decorate the interior, where there are numerous seating areas for small groups, and the outdoor deck spaces offer a plethora or sunbathing options in addition to a flybridge Jacuzzi.

DOUCE FRANCE - 42.20m (138' 5")

Built in 1998 by Alumarine and last refitted in 2015, DOUCE FRANCE provides late 20th Century style with classic wooden panelling and understated furnishings that create a warm and inviting atmosphere. On board there is a wine cellar with a 250 bottle capacity and an extensive collection of water toys including sail boats, sea kayaks, wind surfers and Scuba diving equipment, giving guests the opportunity to earn a recognised diving licence during their stay.

S/Y DOUCE FRANCE can sail at a constant 22 knots in 28 knots of breeze using her 528.8m2/5,692ft2 fore and aft sail area, and regularly achieves 15 knots in 20 knots of wind, making good time from island to island in charter grounds such as the Saronic Islands.

THE BEAST - 39.5m/129.7ft

Motor catamaran THE BEAST is unusual on this list not only for her lack of sails but also because she is designed for expeditions. She was built in New Zealand and launched in 2019 by Profab Engineering with naval architecture by LOMOcean and deep, moody interiors by Oceania Interiors. Floor to ceiling windows let an abundance of natural light filter through to highlight the textures, and vibrant accents of colour can be found in the surrounding artwork. The main deck aft is used for storing the large water toys, including a custom-built sports fisher and an amphibious RIB. On the flybridge there is a Teppanyaki bar where guests can watch their dinner and dessert being prepared before them in incredible skill and showmanship.

CHE - 34.72m (113' 11")

Sunreef catamaran CHE from 2010 was the shipyard's second custom-built superyacht. She has a voluminous 12.8m/42ft beam that results in a large interior salon, beautifully decorated in warm wooden panelling contrasted by vibrant furnishings in turquoise. The accommodation sleeps a maximum of eight guests in four en-suite cabins, and those on board have at their disposal a sizable cockpit filled with sofas, sunbeds and alfresco dining options shaded by the hard top. On the flybridge there is a sun-exposed sunbathing space and an alfresco dining area soaked in sunshine

QUARANTA - 34.10m (111' 11")

Motor catamaran QUARANTA from Curvelle - Logos in Turkey was built in 2013 was built in carbon composite and powered by a pair of Caterpillar C32 Acer diesel engines that allow her to achieve an excellent top speed of 25 knots and a fast cruising speed of 23 knots.

Sleeping up to 12 guests across six well-appointed and generously proportioned staterooms, M/Y QUARANTA treats guests to light and airy interiors as well as notable features such as the hydraulic swim platform that lifts to give guests and the tender easy access in and out of the sea. At deck level it adds to the area for lounging and entertaining with the tender docked safely out of sight between the two hulls. BELLA VITA - 32m/105ft

World’s largest sailing yacht ‘Black Pearl’ arrives in the Mediterranean

Delivered on Friday 16 March, the 107m/350ft sailing yacht ‘Black Pearl’ from Oceanco arrived in the Mediterranean earlier today.

Currently holding the title of world’s largest sailing superyaht, Black Pearl looked triumphant as she made her way to the Mediterranean today.

The result of a fascinating design phase, Black Pearl began life as a concept drawn up by Ken Freivokh in 2010. Codenamed Nautilus, the concept utilised the DynaRig technology engineered by Dykstra Naval Architects and made famous by the 88m/289ft sailing yacht ‘Maltese Falcon’  built by Perini Navi.

In 2012, the Dutch shipyard Oceanco were selected as the builders, bringing in Italian designers Nuvolari Lenard who made a series of changes to the exterior and interior styling to transform her into the sailing yacht we see today.

With such incredible designers playing vital roles in her design, it is unsurprising that Black Pearl has emerged with a unique identity that can be heralded as a landmark moment in the history of sailing yachts.

Indeed, her sleek black-painted steel hull is completed by the huge logo emblazoned on her central mast, making her unlike any other superyacht out on the water right now.

Due to the highly secretive nature of her development phases, there are currently no published images of her interior spaces. It has been confirmed, however, that the collaborative design continued inside and Ken Freivokh, Nuvolari Lenard and Villate Design each had a hand in shaping the look and feel of the social and guest spaces.

Demonstrated by the above images, the DynaRig clearly possesses the same kind of power and performance of the legendary Maltese Falcon. A technology which was dreamed up in the 1960s, it wasn’t until the 21st century that advanced building techniques made it possible to implement the DynaRig on board superyachts.

Greatly improving the efficiency and precision of a vessel, the technology allows a single person to control the angle of the sails by rotating the freestanding masts. Forming a single panel when angled together, the sails ultimately enhance the overall capabilities of the yacht.

What truly distinguishes Black Pearl from her the Perini Navi icon is the unusual reverse bow that was born out of the original concepts and the talents at Oceanco.

Altogether, Black Pearl is truly deserving of her status as a new born legend, and her significance is sure to be felt for many more years to come.

Soyaslan - The World's Largest Wooden Catamaran

Boutique boat builder Soyaslan has just launched what is believed to be the world’s longest cold-moulded catamaran. Its striking CAT63 project measures 19.37m overall and was both designed and built by the specialist Turkish builder, with styling from Tumer Design Studio.

Regardless of the material, the ultra-modern lines of the boat are set to rivet attention in any port or anchorage. The shearline swoops from low sterns up towards the heavily flared bows of the boat, which are themselves raked aft. The white coachroof seems to hover above a pool of black glazing, with a streamlined hard-top shading the flybridge.

That such a complex design should have been built using the cold moulding construction process is a testament to the skills of the Soyaslan’s workers and the ambitions of its designers. “We have good experience in engineering and manufacturing with this method,” says founder Can Soyaslan . “We have engineered and built cold-moulded yachts which are already 30-plus years old. To date, we have produced more than 100 boats and yachts.”

Cold moulding is the method of building up a shape by forming sheets or planks of wood over a plug or frame. The individual wooden elements are glued together with high-performance epoxy and later sheathed in epoxy for protection and longevity.

“In the final look, users cannot tell the difference between a cold-moulded yacht and a GRP or metal one,” continues Soyaslan . “In practice, the durability and longevity of the hull is without comparison. Wooden yachts can last well over a hundred years, while the vibration, sound and heat insulation are much better.

Weight for weight, there is little difference between cold-moulding and GRP. But of course, wood is a sustainable material and there is also the sense of true craftsmanship that only comes from using wood. “It is not easy to explain, but you can notice/feel the difference of a wooden hull when you get onboard. It feels warmer and more honest,” says Soyaslan .

But the construction method is just one of the unique features of CAT63. Soyaslan is renowned for its commitment to technology, and the evidence is everywhere aboard. The 63ft catamaran is powered by twin Yanmar 110hp engines, hooked up to big ZF saildrives, for an 8.5-knot cruising speed and over 10 knots full throttle. There are a huge 60kWh of lithium batteries aboard and no fewer than eight 430W solar panels.

“With the current setup she can spend the night at anchor without generators, even with the air conditioning running. And with eight solar panels, we have minimised the generator usage,” explains Soyaslan .

Accommodation runs to two large double cabins and two twins for eight guests, and a further three berths for crew. Tumer Design has created an interior that feels modern and minimal, with a neutral palette of darker colours blended with colourful blue and orange patterned fabrics. Atmospheric lighting allows you to switch from a calm, relaxed vibe into evening entertainment mode, with social spaces inside and out. Naturally, there’s a large electrically-controlled bathing platform aft which carries the 3.5m tender.

Sailing should bring plenty of excitement, with a generous sailplan that includes a 100 square metre mainsail, a 58 square metre jib and a giant 145 square metre Code Zero for reaching. Little wonder the boat achieved better than 10 knots during sea trials. A stylish bowsprit offers plenty of downwind sailing options, while windward performance gets a boost from the swinging centreboards in each hull. Twin wheels are located at the forward end of the flybridge, and there is a full navigation station in the saloon below.

On board the 28m hybrid catamaran coming to the Cannes Yachting Festival 2024

As the Cannes Yachting Festival 2024 rapidly approaches, Wider Yachts has announced the display of its 28.4-metre WiderCat 92 . With five units already sold and the second hull recently completed and commissioned, the event offers buyers the opportunity to experience the hybrid propulsion technology of the catamaran firsthand.

Built in Fano, Italy, the 242GT semi-displacement yacht showcases naval architecture by the Wider engineering team, as well as exterior and interior design by Luca Dini and Centro Stile Wider. “The first public showing of the WiderCat 92 at the Venice Boat Show was a great success, where it quickly became a standout attraction,” says Alan Knight, sales manager at Argo Yachting. “We are thrilled to bring this remarkable vessel to the Cannes Yachting Festival, where we anticipate international visitors will appreciate the vast space and advanced technology that the Wider team has developed. This long-anticipated event is very exciting for all concerned, and we look forward to welcoming new customers on board.”

Enhanced space and comfort

The WiderCat 92 provides ample space and comfort with its generous layout and thoughtful design. An expansive upper deck and spacious lower deck complement the 100 square metres of main deck space. The upper deck is customisable, featuring a forward cockpit tailored to include a dinette, lounge area or even a Jacuzzi.

Designed to accommodate up to 10 guests across five cabins, along with a crew of four, the lower deck offers a standard layout that includes two VIP cabins and an additional ensuite double guest cabin, while the master is on the main deck forward. Each cabin can be designed with individual colour schemes for a personal touch and features sound-proof flooring throughout.

“The 12-metre beam provides incredible deck space for everyone on board, and the view from the master cabin is truly stunning,” says Knight. “Guests in the two VIP cabins can even enjoy their own side beach club areas."

At the stern, the 67-square-metre beach club on the lower deck is a standout feature, complete with fold-down platforms on both the port and starboard sides at water level. The nearby garage has space for a 5.5-metre tender and water toys.

"The Wider factory has invested vast amounts of time on this project, using its team’s experience of customer requirements to maximise the space,” highlights Knight. “Where possible, they will always consider a customer’s design change to ensure the customer receives the very best experience from their new yacht.”

Hybrid power and solar technology

At the forefront of innovation, the yacht integrates hybrid technology with solar energy to deliver a more eco-friendly and efficient cruising experience.

At the heart of its technology is a powerful 360kW lithium polymer battery set, designed to efficiently store and supply electricity. This system is complemented by variable-speed generators that recharge the batteries as needed, allowing for extended cruising ranges with optimal efficiency. The yacht's lack of a traditional drivetrain also frees up additional interior space for guests to enjoy. Solar panels spanning 140 square metres further enhance the WiderCat 92’s eco credentials by topping up the battery bank.

Onboard monitoring systems provide real-time insights into power usage, ensuring that every aspect of the vessel's operation is transparent and manageable. In pure electric mode, the WiderCat 92 can cruise for 25 nautical miles at six knots before the generators automatically engage. With a maximum speed of 14 knots and a cruising speed of 12 knots, the yacht offers a range of approximately 1,600 nautical miles at cruising speed. At an ecological speed of six knots, the range extends to 2,400 nautical miles.

The battery capacity enables up to 12 hours of operation while at anchor. Additionally, the WiderCat 92 features dynamic positioning technology - a satellite-controlled system that automatically maintains the yacht's position and heading without the need for anchoring. This feature not only supports zero-emission stops but also protects the seabed from anchor damage and permits mooring in areas with anchoring restrictions.

Video shows moments before superyacht went down in storm off Sicily

Newly released video captures a luxury superyacht being battered by a violent storm before it suddenly sank off Sicily with 22 people aboard Monday.

The grainy images obtained by NBC News and other outlets were recorded on closed-circuit television not far from where the Bayesian was anchored, about a half-mile from the port of Porticello, on Sicily’s northern coast .

The yacht's 250-foot mast, illuminated with lights and lashed by the storm, appears to bend to one side before it finally disappears and is replaced by darkness.

The speed with which a yacht built to handle the roughest seas capsized stunned maritime experts.  

“I can’t remember the last time I read about a vessel going down quickly like that, you know, completely capsizing and going down that quickly, a vessel of that nature, a yacht of that size,” said Stephen Richter of SAR Marine Consulting.

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and five of the 22 other people who were aboard the 184-foot vessel remain unaccounted for and are believed to be trapped in the Bayesian’s hull, nearly 170 feet underwater.

Officials confirmed Monday that at least one person, the ship’s cook, had died.  

Superyachts like the Bayesian, which had been available for charters at a rate of $215,000 a week, are designed to stay afloat even as they are taking on water to give the people aboard a chance to escape, Richter said. 

“Boats of this size, they’re taking passengers on an excursion or a holiday,” Richter said. “They are not going to put them in situations where it may be dangerous or it may be uncomfortable, so this storm that popped up was obviously an anomaly. These vessels that carry passengers, they’re typically very well-maintained, very well-appointed.”

Built by Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi in 2008, the U.K.-registered Bayesian could carry 12 guests and a crew of up to 10, according to online specialist yacht sites. Its nearly 250-foot mast is the tallest aluminum sailing mast in the world, according to CharterWorld Luxury Yacht Charters. 

On Tuesday, Italian rescue workers resumed the search for Lynch and the five other passengers still missing: Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah; Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife.

“The fear is that the bodies got trapped inside the vessel,” Salvatore Cocina, the head of civil protection in Sicily, told Reuters .

The Bayesian is owned by a firm linked to Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, who was one of the 15 people rescued Monday after it capsized.

“It’s extremely rare for a boat of this size to sink,” Richter said.

What’s not rare is the kind of storm that sank it , said Simon Boxall, senior lecturer in oceanography at Britain’s University of Southampton.

“People assume the Mediterranean is this rather calm and passive place that never gets storms and always blue skies,” Boxall said. “In fact, you get some quite horrendous storms that are not uncommon at this time of year.”

The president of Italy’s meteorological society has said Monday’s violent storm may have involved a waterspout, essentially a tornado over water, or a downburst, which occurs more frequently but doesn’t involve the rotation of the air.

Luca Mercalli, president of the Italian Meteorology Society, also said recent temperatures may have been a factor. 

“The sea surface temperature around Sicily was around 30 degrees Celsius [86 Fahrenheit], which is almost 3 degrees more than normal,” Mercalli told Reuters. “This creates an enormous source of energy that contributes to these storms.”

The Mediterranean sailing vacation was designed to be a celebration for Lynch, who two months ago was acquitted by a San Francisco jury of fraud charges stemming from the 2011 sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion.

Prosecutors alleged that Lynch, dubbed “Britain’s Bill Gates,” and Autonomy’s vice president for finance, Stephen Chamberlain, had padded the firm’s finances ahead of the sale. Lynch’s lawyers argued that HP was so eager to acquire Autonomy that it failed to adequately check the books .

Lynch had taken Morvill, who was one of his defense attorneys, on the luxury trip. 

Chamberlain was not on the Bayesian.

In what appears to be a tragic coincidence, a car struck and killed Chamberlain on Saturday as he was jogging in a village about 68 miles north of London, local police said.

“Steve fought successfully to clear his good name at trial earlier this year, and his good name now lives on through his wonderful family,” Chamberlain’s lawyer, Gary Lincenberg, said in a statement .
